Out of the Box: Look of the Week

16 Jan

It has been a red carpet heavy week (Golden Globes and Elle’s Women in Television) and we’ve got more fancy frocks on display at the Golden Globes after parties and the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. Plus the TCA winter press tour continues and we’ve got some fun shots featuring the casts of Mad Men and Community.

Diane KrugerDiane Kruger switched out of her silver slinky gown at the InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes post-party; the shorter floral Giamba black and white dress is all the better to dance in. Joshua Jackson still looks just as handsome in the same tux he was wearing at the awards show.

Judith LightJudith Light! Also at the same post Globes party and fabulous as ever in a color that joins the ranks of the many stunning bold hues on display that night.

Mad Men TCAMoving onto the TCA press tour as the Mad Men cast talk about the final half of the final season (*sob*) and this photo of Elisabeth Moss and Vincent Kartheiser has me shipping Pete and Peggy. That should not be a thing. Kartheiser’s beard is looking mighty fine as are Moss’ red pumps.

January Jones TCAMore from the Mad Men panel and because a super smiley Betty Draper is a rarity here is a delightful shot of January Jones. She also happens to be adding to my current leather jacket obsessionMad Men returns for the last time on April 5 with the appropriately titled “The End of an Era.”

Gillian Jacobs TCAMore TCA and Gillian Jacobs in a patterned Tanya Taylor delight from the SS15 collection. I would also not say no to Joel McHale’s super cute dragon sweatshirt.

Emily BluntRed dresses have dominated the awards circuit this week and Emily Blunt’s scarlet Pucci frock is a beautiful addition to the trend. At the Critic’s Choice awards Blunt won for Edge of Tomorrow which was my favorite big blockbuster of 2014 and her speech – at the bottom of the page – with bonus John Krasinski cameo encapsulates why.

Jenny SlateAnother lady and performance I am in awe of is Jenny Slate in Obvious Child so I am so happy to see her get recognized for this role while looking fantastic in Miu Miu. Slate gives an empowering speech to watch and feel good about.

Best of the Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet: Sparkle Motion

12 Jan

Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s coverage of the 2015 Golden Globes red carpet and we’re going to be splitting this up into four posts covering all the major trends of the night. This was a really strong year for a variety of styles and not only that but the awards themselves were at times incredibly touching with many misty eye inducing speeches. Good work everyone.

First up the super sparkly gowns.

Diane KrugerKicking off with the best dressed couple of the night and Diane Kruger’s super shimmery Emilia Wickstead dress is eye catching and the same can be said for Joshua Jackson in a tux. Kruger also had the best reaction to The Affair winning best show as January Jones can attest.

julianne mooreJulianne Moore serving up feathered and sequin perfection in Givenchy Couture. There was cheering at this red carpet moment.

Uzo AdubaAnother big style win for Orange is the New Black’s Uzo Aduba in a column of silver Randi Rahm goodness.

Maura tierneyTaking a brief break from all over silver with Maura Tierney in a chain mail style wine color frock and this is one of several looks from the night with a 70s inspired edge.

Emma stoneAnd now for something completely different and Emma Stone gets added to my “huh, jumpsuits can be pretty fantastic list” with this stunner from Lanvin. The bow that turns into a train should be too much but it works.

Dakota JohnsonMore metallic decadence and former Ben and Kate star Dakota Johnson dazzles in Chanel Couture.

ellie kemperEllie Kemper is a beaded beauty in this exquisite Naeem Khan dress. Bonus red lipstick points are awarded.

Stay tuned for more Golden Globe red carpet reactions.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week – Best of 2014 Part 2

2 Jan

One last look back to 2014 with the second part of our Best of 2014 rundown. There have been a lot of amazing style moments and here are some of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s favorites from this weekly column. For Part 1 head here.

Best Magazine Cover Part 2

GOT Vanity FairThis cover came out before I’d seen any of the show and I bought the issue anyway knowing that I would want it when I had caught up. And I’m glad I did as Annie Leibovitz’s shoot is stunning and it not only showcases the incredible various costume design styles, but when else are you going to see Daenerys sitting next to Cersei with Jon Snow hanging out at the top of the pile?!

Best Sundance Couple

Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson SundanceThe Sundance Film Festival is fast approaching which means winter threads aplenty and Diane Kruger’s take on layering in Ports 1961 is super chic. Joshua Jackson’s got a slightly more casual look and this is how to do couples tweed.

Best Stripes

Jessica WilliamsStripes are one of my several clothing weaknesses and Jessica Williams looks stunning in Tanya Taylor for Paper magazine’s aptly titled Beautiful People issue.

Best Teen

Kiernan ShipkaThere is only one contender here as Kiernan Shipka continues to kill it on the red carpet and she nails it pretty much every time blowing her other Mad Men co-stars out of the water. This Max Mara ensemble from back in June is slightly edgier thanks to the leather skirt and by pairing it with a soft silk white top it doesn’t go too teen rebellion. The pop of yellow is a very fun touch and I adore her.

Best Talkshow Entrance

Amy PoehlerAmy Poehler does fall fashion in the city with aplomb as she headed into David Letterman in October to promote her aces book Yes Please. Coat and boot coveting is occurring.

Best Summer TCA Part 2

Lizzy Caplan TCAAnother Roksanda stunner for TCA this time from the party portion with Lizzy Caplan in this amazing color block creation paired with equally electric Brian Atwood pumps.

Best Premiere Frock

Elizabeth BanksThis is the perfect gown for a HUGE premiere event (would also be a great Oscar dress) and Elizabeth Banks shows how it is done in Elie Saab Couture at the Mockingjay Part 1 world premiere in London.

Best Creative Arts Emmys Red Carpet

Uzo AdubaThe Emmys before the Emmys and Orange is the New Black’s Uzo Aduba won the Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series while looking incredible in a white Costume National without looking the remotest bit bridal.

Best Critics’ Choice TV Awards

Tatiana MaslanyThe woman of many faces and Tatiana Maslany took home Best Actress for the second year in a row at the Critics’ Choice TV Awards in a Cushnie et Ochs floaty frock. The splash of red lipstick and pumps is the color injection this look needs.

Best Best Friends

Leighton Meester and Gillian JacobsWhile promoting Life Partners there has been a whole lot of TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites Leighton Meester and Gillian Jacobs much to my delight. I really love this shot of them from the LA premiere. Yes I want to get brunch with them.

Best London Fashion Week

Felicity Jones BurberryThis is from the February LFW for the Fall ’14 collections and it is all Burberry Prorsum for Felicity Jones pairing a simple lemon chiffon color sweater and a beautiful gold jacquard print pencil skirt.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set (with a Twist)

26 Nov

It is a quiet week on TV Instagram what with it being Thanksgiving tomorrow and so we are bringing you this a day earlier with a twist. The twist being there are only a few photos, they are not from a TV set and it is only one person’s account.

Diane Kruger has quickly become an Instagram favorite here at TV Ate My Wardrobe thanks to an array of cat, fashion and Pacey photos. Plus – and this is going to sound like I’m speaking direct from US Weekly – she seems pretty normal for an actress who has been modeling since she was 16 and is the face of Chanel’s skincare range. There is a goofy charm to her posts and a lack of vanity that is unexpected for someone in this profession.

Such as this ‘post crying all day for a film’ shot:

Cat photos:

Joshua Jackson in a suit:

And another adorable selfie to round things off nicely:

Along with Mindy Kaling, this Instagram account gets bestowed with the ‘gift that keeps on giving’ title.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

24 Oct

“Out of the Box” is serving up an almost all Elle Women in Hollywood rundown with a bonus fantasy casting prospect courtesy of the GQ Gentlemen’s ball. There’s a shift into fall threads and a whole lot simple designs with a twist sticking with a blue/black/white color palette. Oh and the event was in association with Calvin Klein, this is pretty much what most attendees are wearing.

Lizzy CaplanLizzy Caplan’s color block big collar number is like the Calvin Klein sporty twist on this Louis Vuitton outfit Michelle Williams wore to the Cabaret opening night. The zip details give it a playful edge and it’s a super cute dress.

Ashley MadekweWearing a Calvin Klein LBD with a difference thanks to the addition of a metallic bib is Ashley Madekwe and this is another stunning simple look with a slight edge.

Kerry WashingtonMore dramatic zip detail and an even more dramatic neckline, which looks like the fanciest serviette; Kerry Washington is totally pulling off a dress that might be too much for others. The dash of blue eye makeup doesn’t delve into matchy matchy territory and I love her oxblood nail color next to navy of the dress.

Tina FeySo we’ve had a LBD with a twist and now here’s just a simple and effective LBD from Tina Fey.

Brie LarsonAnd another very simple outfit from one of the cover stars of the Women in Hollywood issue of Elle and Brie Larson hits one of my sweet spots for a fancy(ish) pants event as I’m a sucker for the menswear influence (owning a really good lady tux is the dream)The only thing that doesn’t quite work is going full monochromatic with the Louboutin pumps (which are a slightly different shade of white).

Joshua Jackson and Taylor KitschI would make a #TrueDetectiveSeason2 gag here if one of them wasn’t probably/definitely been cast, but if someone could cast ‘Grizzly McBeardy’ Andrew Garfield, this dashing and well tailored Joshua Jackson and a very Riggins looking Taylor Kitsch in something then I would be thrilled. Make this happen casting people. Oh and maybe trim Andrew Garfield’s beard down just a smidge (okay a few inches). For now we have this excellent image thanks to the GQ Gentlemen’s Ball.

What’s in a Dress on The Affair?

21 Oct

The Affair has many secrets it is yet to divulge including the identity of the person who has been killed and why the police want to talk to Noah and Alison about their relationship in so much depth. It is a show that begs to be watched more than once from the way scenarios change and the dialogue differs in both perspectives. It is a spot the difference if you will and this goes beyond the words that are said with hairstyles and clothing differing in each version of events. I’m going to focus in on the latter and the dress Helen wore to the fancy soiree at her father’s house in the second episode.

At this point we don’t know if Alison or Noah is reliable in their recollections as there are enough discrepancies to suggest both have inaccurate memories. Or they are both lying. Or one of them has a better memory. The other thing to remember is this is also a matter of perspective so Alison comes across as sexier in Noah’s version, whereas in her own retelling of the story her dress and mannerisms are far more tempered around him. By looking at how they view the secondary characters we can also learn more about Noah and Alison, which is where Helen and her dress come in.

The Affair 1.02 which dressHelen asks her husband’s opinion regarding which dress she should wear with Noah picking the one that looks slinkier and with a whole lot of plunge and cut outs. Helen instead picks the more covered up simple dress and this is the one we see her wearing at the party. Helen looks pretty, but there is nothing about this outfit that suggests she is a woman who comes from money. Noah’s side of the story reveals Helen to be a good mom who isn’t really anything like her parents (who he clearly despises) and while they’re still sexually active they constantly get interrupted by the kids. There is no time for just them and any excitement Noah once had about this relationship is now gone; he even turns down her shower suggesting as he’s too busy masturbating to thoughts of Alison. Which, urgh Noah you’re wife seems pretty great to be honest and you’re just feeling restless about the life you are living. This projection of his wife could also be coming from a place of guilt and so the version of Helen we are seeing is everything good.

The Affair 1.02 Noah and HelenAt the party the woman Helen’s father had an affair with is there and Noah listens while Helen has a mini meltdown about this intrusion. Later in a move that maybe makes Noah feel emasculated (so much eye rolls towards Noah’s discomfort in this scene); Helen tries to big up his second book while also complimenting his less commercial first novel. Alison delivers a whisky to Noah in this scene and there is no interaction between Helen and Alison, not even an acknowledgement they have met before. This could be Noah separating the two women in his life as best he can.

The Affair 1.02 dress fixingWhen we see this scene take place from Alison’s side there is not only interaction, but the same level of intrusive comments from the rich to the wait staff as if they think they have the right to make overly long remarks about personal tragedy (Helen’s mother to Alison) and to fix Alison’s dress in front of everyone with an unsubtle reference to the tightness. It is both patronizing and humiliating with a strong whiff of belittling. Helen is cut from the same summer folk cloth as her mother to Alison; the precise demands she makes about the glass of water (no ice) and a very thin sliver of cake sounds so utterly specific and ridiculous. Helen is stood on the opposite side of the table to her husband, rather than by his side and everything in part two suggests there is no closeness between husband and wife.

The Affair 1.02 Alison's versionThis is clear in the interaction Alison witnesses above and it is a hostile looking conversation between Helen and Noah. Helen’s dress is far more opulent here and she looks like a woman of money in her stance and styling. There is nothing approachable about Helen in this scenario and something as simple as an updo can make a character look frosty in comparison to the no fuss hair down approach of Helen in the first part. Alison’s hair also changes between the two; Noah remembers it being down and flirty (maybe Noah thinks of women with their hair down) whereas it is tied back when Alison recalls this evening.

It’s funny that I was leaning towards Alison being the more reliable unreliable narrator up to the point where she paints Helen as just another rich lady bitch and my sympathy at this point is very much with Helen. Maybe this is because I really like Maura Tierney, but also because up to this interpretation of her she seems pretty great. Of course this could be Noah romanticizing the woman he is stepping out on and the mother of his children and in the same respect Alison might be painting her in a more negative light to ease her guilt.

For another spouse comparison here is how Noah sees Cole as the cowboy and super macho dude:

The Affair 1.02 Cowboy ColeLater Noah comments that “married people don’t fuck like that” adding further credence to this idea that Noah’s perspective of Cole is all about masculinity and excitement.

The Affair 1.02 ColeTo Alison, Cole on the same day looks like the surfer dude from the first episode in a Henley and sans cowboy hat. The change of top could simply be that Cole was all sweaty from working and horse riding and yet it is notable because they look like two very different kinds of people in these shots.

The narrative set up on The Affair is disorientating because it isn’t clear at this point exactly what is going on or what is motivating Noah and Alison in the present day scenes. Costume projects an image telling us more about the character in question and because clothing is being used to show differing perspectives on this show it adds another level of intrigue; sometimes the changes are subtle with how well something fits and at other points such as Helen’s party dress the discrepancies are far bigger. Maybe Helen wore neither of those dresses to the party and we might end up seeing a third version of this pivotal event showing what really occurred.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

9 Oct

Welcome once again to Behind the Insta-Scenes! A new feature offering a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off set) antics.

The inaugural Behind the Insta-Scenes post was an all comedy affair and we’ve mixed it up with a couple of shots from some more dramatic shows, plus a directorial debut and this week a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite joined Instagram which is cause for celebration.

Play guess The Good Wife plot from Alan Cumming’s shot of co-star Julianna Margulies wearing an apron and latex gloves while sitting on a tiny plastic chair.

http://instagram.com/p/t6qRY1jaXs/?modal=true

This one from Nicole Beharie seems more clear cut and I don’t think anyone will be too surprised to see snakes on Sleepy Hollow.

Diane Kruger is now on Instagram and she has already delivered on fashion, Pacey and amazing cat photos. The highlight so far is this photo from German themed party Kruger organised for The Bridge crew (oh hey FX please renew this show) after Germany won the World Cup. So adorable.

The second episode of A to Z is on tonight and Ben Feldman’s reminder concentrates on co-star Cristin Milioti; all I can focus on is her amazingly long eyelashes. While I thought the first episode was only okay, I am totally charmed by Feldman and Milioti even if the premise isn’t so promising and so I will definitely keep on watching.

Busy Philipps directed an episode of Cougar Town this week (including her own daughter in the scene above) and she did so in style wearing a vintage JC Penny ’50s dress.

Our weekly installment of Mindy Project set shenanigans has Mindy Kaling learning lines in an Equipment tartan sweatshirt that I really want in my own wardrobe now it is finally cold enough for sweaters.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

8 Aug

The second season of Orange is the New Black was released on Netflix two months ago and it is still dominating discourse; this week’s “Out of the Box” includes creator Jenji Kohan as a cover star and the cast at a panel event- also check out this conversation with Laverne Cox. Plus we have other magazine covers to discuss, a Mad Men pair working on another project and effortless street style. All in all this is a very colorful edition of “Out of the Box” from H to T (head to toe for those non-America’s Next Top Model viewers).

Jenji KohanThe Hollywood Reporter produced two covers for their “New Disrupters” feature and while one provided jokes aplenty on Twitter thanks to Nic Pizzolatto’s critic ire and self-serious posing (Emily Yoshida’s Preserve model comment is spot on), it is Jenji Kohan’s stunning head shot and super colorful hair that really stands out. The studio shot photos are equally delightful as the leather jacket isn’t trying to portray ‘bad boy realness’ like this one and the print wrap dress paired with polka dot strappy heels are as fun as this shoot is. This isn’t to say that Kohan’s interview is fluff, far from it and it is one of the most honest I’ve read from someone in her position as she discusses gender inequality, how hard she has worked to get to where she is, issues on the set of Weeds and her current show Orange is the New Black.

Taylor SchillingThis outfit is so perfect and simple; the violet Roland Mouret ‘Timarcha’ dress paired with red pumps is a straight up style victory for Taylor Schilling at a panel discussion for Orange is the New Black this week.

Uzo AdubaAlso going for bold pumps and a purple hue is co-star Uzo Aduba. Instead of going for two block colors for footwear and frock the woven material includes an array of pinks, oranges and greens. It is a super adorable summery frock and while Schilling is killing it, I know which one I would rather wear for a sit down discussion panel.

Chris Pratt EsquireThe man of the hour and while the internet might be reaching peak Chris Pratt due to the success of Guardians of the Galaxy (which I loved) and how everything he does is treated with J-Law levels of adoration (pre-backlash) I am still here for all of this including the September issue of Esquire.

Christina Hendricks and John SlatteryMad Men co-stars Christina Hendricks and John Slattery were in London this week promoting the Slattery directed/Hendricks starring God’s Pocket and it’s always fun to catch up on the Mad Men cast in non-1960s threads. John Slattery has relaxed handsome silver fox dude down and I love Hendricks in this bold striped Vivienne Westwood dress (slightly related – there is a boutique I visit often just to peruse their Vivienne Westwood collection and look longingly at the fantastic necklines/colors). Hendricks gets extra points for the pop of lip color and Joan-esque updo.

Diane Kruger and Joshua JacksonSwapping the red carpet for a pair who is the epitome of cool summer in the city chic with Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger. Kruger is a sartorial queen both in couture and regular day wear like this floral strapless dress and sandals. Jackson’s rocking a not too deep-V, the perfect amount of beardy goodness and classic red Ray-Ban wayfarers.

Best of the 2014 Met Gala – Part Two

6 May

Continuing our look at the Met Gala celebrating Charles James and part two (head here for part one) is focusing on the couples and dudes.

Emma StoneEmma Stone and Andrew Garfield have been on the promo trail for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for months it seems and both of them deliver once again. While I’m mourning the loss of Andrew Garfield’s incredible hair, Emma Stone is doing a good distraction job with a chunky side-braid that’s making me long for hair that can be tied up again. Stone’s Thakoon two-piece in pink and magenta is incredibly eye-catching and the leg slit is tastefully provocative. In a grey Band of Outsiders tux jacket, Garfield is complementing the pinks of Stone’s ensemble while also standing out himself.

Diane Kruger and Joshua JacksonDiane Kruger and Joshua Jackson were on the most anticipated list and they didn’t disappoint. Diane Kruger’s Jason Wu for Hugo Boss is sleek and the contrasting shimmery fabric on the bottom half is mesmerizing. Jackson doesn’t look too bad either. So many Pacey feelings right now.

Beyonce and Jay-ZBeyoncé’s black beaded Givenchy Couture gown is super sexy and like nothing else we saw on the red carpet at the Met Gala. The beaded veil ties the look together and the pop of burgundy lip color adds more dramatic impact. This is a great turn from Beyoncé and she tends to bring her A-game to this event (and to everything she does really). Jay Z is looking pretty dapper in a white tux jacket.

Sarah Silverman and Michael SheenSarah Silverman tends to do things differently on the red carpet and on this occasion she is wearing a maroon Zac Posen that is possibly the best interpretation of the 2014 theme (maybe tying with Taylor Swift). Michael Sheen’s done the decoration part of the dress code and the couple will be appearing together in the new season of Masters of Sex (which I’m already super anticipating).

Blake LivelyOne couple who don’t tend to pose together on the red carpet did away with this eye roll inducing policy last night. Both Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are wearing Gucci with Lively injecting some old Hollywood glamour into the Charles James celebration. This gown is pure Blake Lively (maybe too much) and the train adds a hint of romanticism to the look.

Claire Danes and Hugh DancyClaire Danes’ Oscar de la Renta gown is one we featured during NYFW and where Emma Stone’s ensemble is putting a contemporary twist on the Charles James theme, Danes is doing the same with color blocking pink and burgundy in a classic structured gown. The velvet/satin material twist is doing something different and a beardy Hugh Dancy looks pretty sharp in his traditional tuxedo.

Kim KCredit where credit is due as Kim Kardashian shows a big improvement on last year’s floral disaster. Maybe it’s the recent Vogue cover, but both Kim and Kanye look pretty damn good in Lanvin. Kanye’s gone all in with tails and a white piqué vest and while Kim’s daring thigh split was problematic, there’s no need to dwell on that when they look this good.

Matt BomerNow to the dudes and Matt Bomer in a tux is pretty much all I need to say.

Benedict CumberbatchFollowed quickly by Benedict Cumberbatch in tails and he’s observing the dress code for the guys which asked for white tie and decorations – most have the white tie down, but Cumberbatch goes the extra distance with a pocket chain. Very dapper indeed.

For part one of our Met Gala coverage head here.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

24 Jan

January isn’t just a month of award season shindigs; no it’s also the time to see what films might feature in the next award season as many filmmakers and actors flock to Utah for the Sundance Film Festival. The red carpet here is less floor length gown and more tights and boots, which to be honest is more my speed. This week’s Out of the Box is looking at the winter fashion on display as well as the Elle magazine Women in TV celebration that took place in LA on Wednesday featuring some of the cover stars.

Elisabeth Moss SundanceElisabeth Moss has been killing it on the red carpet, wowing at the recent Golden Globe Awards and now wearing pretty much ideal outfit at the Sundance premiere for “The One I Love.” Tights, super cute ankle boots and a winter floral dress are a winning Sundance combination and the film has been well received (also starring Mark Duplass and Ted Danson). This is definitely the best haircut that Moss has had – yay short hair – and the dash of pink lipstick adds a pop of color to this look.

Elijah Wood Sundance 2014We love a good pea coat here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and Elijah Wood is rocking a classic navy blue at a Game of Thrones Sundance soiree (Big Boi from Outkast hosted). This outfit is both stylish and functional and no one pulls off the sweater/shirt combo as well as the diminutive star.

Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson SundanceDiane Kruger laughs in the face of the freezing cold weather in a Ports 1961 creation and it’s all about the layering; belted tweed waistcoat, black jeans, boots, collarless white shirt and a stunning camel coat draped over her shoulders. The Chanel purse and Joshua Jackson add that little something extra to this winter warming appearance. It’s the perfect amount of Sundance chic without looking too try.

Zooey Deschanel and Mindy KalingMoving on to warmer climates with Zooey Deschanel and Mindy Kaling at the Elle magazine “Women in TV” celebration (they’re both cover stars). Deschanel is wearing a Dolce & Gabbana dress and while I’m not in love with the sheer sleeves, the polka dots instantly cancels this out. Kaling’s pink lip color is on trend and the black Badgley Mischka frock looks really great on her.

Uzo AdubaI finally started Orange is the New Black this week (I know) and after two episodes I’m totally all in. The cast feature in the Elle ‘Women in TV’ issue and Uzo Aduba looks fantastic in a super feminine lace frock at the event celebrating this publication.
