Dan Sackheim is directing the season finale of The Americans and while his series of shots pretty much gave nothing away (except for an all important turtleneck Philip costume choice), I have a feeling some airport shenanigans are going to take place. The giant plane logo being the giveaway. I would make an excellent spy.
Gillian Jacobs retains her TV Ate My Wardrobe Style Queen crown in Novis at SXSW. I haven’t seen the new Community yet, but I’m pretty certain I will be very into the stripe sweaters Britta will no doubt be sporting.
Gina Rodriguez and Yael Grobglas are PaleyFest cuties and this week’s episode of Jane the Virgin somehow made me ship Petra and Rafael. I blame the dog.
Rumor has it that Kelly Rutherford and Matthew Settle have done what Rufus and Lily could not; I am a sucker for cast members being romantically entwined or besties after a show is dunzo. Here they are joined Caroline Lagerfelt who played Rutherford’s on screen mother and CeCe was not one of Rufus’ biggest fans. It looks a lot cozier IRL.
DVD sets that don’t come with any episode commentaries don’t quite fulfill their boxset potential; this is not the case with Looking as Frankie J. Alvarez captures one session in action.
And here is Daniel Franzese post recording session and a very busy day. Franzese is killing it as Eddie on Looking this season and here is the excellent Buzzfeed article he mentions in the caption.
Behind the Insta-Scenes has guest stars aplenty and hanging out on set (in more ways than just mooching around) from a variety of shows such as Jane the Virgin, Orphan Black and Broad City.
Bellamy Young captures Scott Foley looking good in a hoodie on the set of Scandal. From the caption I guess we have to assume that sadly there won’t be a Mellie/Jake interaction.
The Mindy Project continues to kill it in the guest star department with Laverne Cox appearing in a later episode as Tamra’s cousin Sheena. I cannot wait.
Gina Rodriguez celebrated her one year anniversary since auditioning for Jane the Virgin with this shot and sweet sentiment. I need those candles in my life.
Happy Thursday! And yes it is time for another Behind the Insta-Scenes roundup and this week we’ve got an array of photos from sets such as Parks and Recreation (enjoy it while you can as this is the final season), The Good Wife, The Mindy Project (with a bonus special gift from Mindy) and Jane the Virgin.
Father/daughter time on The Good Wife and Sarah Steele is always a welcome sight as Marissa Gold; can she be my body woman please? I wouldn’t mind a glass of milk or a helpful snark filled bit of advice.
What better way to congratulate someone on an Oscar nomination than with a special wreath and the Wreath Witherspoon gag from The Mindy Project’s festive episode is still making me laugh a month later. Glad to see Reese Witherspoon is into this new holiday tradition.
Going full Claire Danes as Juliet on the set of Jane the Virgin – wings like this will always conjure up Romeo + Juliet feelings – with Gina Rodriguez teasing a potential Chapter Seventeen costume look.
The all-denim Jean-Ralphio and Mona Lisa styling is still one of my favorite Parks and Recreation costume moments and hopefully we will get to see more outrageous outfits from the pair in this final season.
More from Parks and Rec’s final season (*sob*) with Retta treating us to a closer look at April’s flashback look from her very specific leaving party theme.
It is far from summer dress weather and the grey sky that is my current view is rather uninviting; however I finally caught up on Jane the Virgin which has charming and a generally sunny disposition while set in an almost always warm climate (with the occasional hurricane). The costuming is a whole lot of flirty frocks, shorts, tanks and vest tops all ideal for Long Beach. Jane’s attire tends to be on the more relaxed side although her teaching placement requires a less casual approach to her dress choices. Sometimes this goes array as was the case when she fell asleep in her clubbing outfit (which became almost school appropriate with the addition of a cardigan).
The dress I want to talk about (and add to my own collection) appears in Chapter Six and falls into Jane’s work wear category. It’s floral and cute, plus it has pockets which is what I want from a dress. And guess what? It is also super affordable! H&M is where you can find this dress and it makes me so happy to see Jane wear clothes that make sense for her budget. And even though this is a summer wear for Jane, a pair of tights, cute ankle boots and a cardigan could easily turn it into a winter floral frock. The pink belt is a good extra touch and there are plenty of color belts that would work.
By doing these wish lists I often marvel at the cost of some character’s clothing collections and it doesn’t always make the most amount of sense considering their job or lifestyle – even Olivia Pope with her two $2000 cardigans seems like a stretch. In Chapter Six Jane’s favorite store Target even gets in on the multifloral dress action. This isn’t to say that Jane doesn’t wear more splurge heavy clothes as in the same episode she’s wearing a Joie romper that was originally priced at just over $300, but hey it is a start.
While thinking about the cost of my closet I know I have a couple of more expensive pieces (coats, dresses and shoes mostly) with the majority coming from stores at price points like H&M or Uniqlo and it is encouraging to see costume designers utilizing brands like these when a character doesn’t have an endless stream of disposable income.
Everyone is getting back to set and this means it is time for the first “Behind the Insta-Scenes” of the new year with bonus Golden Globes photos involving worlds colliding, pooches and general shenanigans.
Treats from returning shows like Broad City and Looking, plus another excellent guest star making their way to The Mindy Project are all featured below.
Fargo meets Fargo with Allison Tolman and Frances McDormand at the Golden Globes. I’ve already talked about Tolman’s dress here, but I am all over McDormand’s beads and DGAF vibes.
I finally started Jane the Virgin! Five episodes in and it is love. Gina Rodriguez’s Globes essentials include Jane watching over her, which obviously did the trick.
Broad City is back! Start every dance party ever. And while I am a selfie stick sceptic, I will make an exception for Abbi and Ilana in this two part writers’ room shot.
*Sob* that Selfie is dunzo but here is John Cho making an appearance on The Mindy Project. In love with Mindy’s Oscar de la Renta belted tweed jacket and matching skirt.
Rounding out the TV Ate My Wardrobe 2015 Golden Globe coverage with a smorgasbord of style highs with some daring approaches and a whole array of classic looks. Plus a couple of family portraits.
No I did not think a crop top would pop up on this list, but thanks to Lorde in an incredible Narciso Rodriguez ensemble this is a thing that has happened. I want this jacket in my life.
This might be down to Danes style blindness but I love this Valentino frock (which Claire Danes referred to as a work of art on E!), well aside from the sheer panel. Ace earrings too.
While Jessica Chastain’s Atelier Versace gown is giving me all the Amy Adams American Hustle feelings and thereby it isn’t setting the world on fire, Chastain still looks super sexy and incredible.
Gina Rodriguez follows in the Golden Globe first season award winning group for sometimes teen show affairs – which includes Claire Danes, Keri Russell and Jennifer Garner – and she played it safe in black Badgley Mischka. She looks flawless and I can even see beyond the fringed sheer skirt. As I lamented yesterday I still need to watch Jane the Virgin and her speech was one of the many misty eye inducing moments.
Allison Tolman opted for a similar shape gown to the one she wore at the Emmys and why not when it looks this good. Great accessory choices and overall styling.
Eddie Redmayne did not disappoint with his choice of Gucci tuxedo and there’s not a lot of guys who could work the velvet look this well. Love the olive color and cut of Hannah Bagshawe’s frock. Yes the lean is happening.
Happy sibling time and the Gyllenhaal’s are a delight. Jake gets beard points and while I think Maggie’s dress would be better in a bolder color (I thought blue whereas Whitney McIntosh suggested green) the Miu Miu frock is still lovely. Maggie Gyllenhaal winning for The Honourable Woman was another excellent speech moment:
“I’ve noticed a lot of people talking about the wealth of roles for powerful women in television lately, and when I look around the room at the women who are in here and I think about the performances that I’ve watched this year, what I see actually are women who are sometimes powerful and sometimes not. Sometimes sexy, sometimes not. Sometimes honorable, sometimes not. And what I think is new is the wealth of roles for actual women in television and in film.”
A celebratory portrait of the Boyhood family and I am all over Lorelei Linklater’s pink dip dyed hair and this is another sheer moment that in a surprise twist is working for me.
Going to end with two of the ladies of the night and the biggest swoon moment came from Tina Fey’s lady tux of amazing. This is hosting attire perfection. Another beautiful blue gown for Amy Poehler.
While it is still up on YouTube here is their searing, hilarious and incredible opening monologue:
For more Golden Globes red carpet coverage head here, here and here.
Happy Golden Globes Day! It isn’t just about the dresses (and suits) on display from the awards show as there has been a lot of pre-gaming at various events over the past few days. Here are some of our favorite looks including a whole lot of pattern from W Magazine’s Golden Globes celebration and the 2015 BAFTA LA Tea Party.
Diane Kruger is serving up 1960s perfection in a lilac Marni frock at the W party and the leopard-print A.L.C. ‘Davenport’ clutch is the perfect addition to an already fantastic outfit.
Jay Duplass is wearing a shirt that is stylistically in tune with his character on Transparent in this fun shot with co-star Amy Landecker at W’s Golden Globe celebration.
There is something a little upholstery about Tracee Ellis Ross’ dress but this is floral perfection nonetheless. Bonus red lipstick points awarded.
Moving on to the BAFTA Tea Party and starting with Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez in a very cute and fun Guishem dress. I’m looking forward to seeing what Rodriguez will wear on the red carpet later and I will also continue to lament the fact I have still yet to watch Jane the Virgin.
Yes this is a playsuit and while I have my own play/jumpsuit concerns, over the past few months I have warmed to them on others and Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt in Emilia Wickstead is another I find myself liking a whole bunch. The flash of pastel color with the clutch detracts from the slightly blah nude strappy sandals.
This is a very delightful look from Tyrant’s Moran Atias with butterflies and plaid from Temperley London at the BAFTA Tea Party.
This reads a little more beach and cocktails than tea party mostly because I think it needs a necklace; however Gillian Anderson is still resplendent in this ensemble.
Anderson’s The Fall co-star Jamie Dornan shows how to do the suit without a shirt and tie thing with aplomb. The pocket square is a nice touch and while I’m all for beardy goodness this is entering the too grizzly stages.
Eddie Redmayne’s suit game is consistently strong (as consistent as his pose leaning which I can’t unsee since Tom and Lorenzo mentioned it) and his Alexander McQueen electric-blue suit at the BAFTA event is no different. He is definitely my most anticipated dude for his evening.
And finally wearing something that sits in the middle of Redmayne’s suit and Dornan’s jacket/no shirt and tie is Kit Harington looking far more casual than his Testament of Youthpremiere attire from last week.
Come back tomorrow for a whole lot more dress (and suit) analysis.
