Tatiana Maslany Talks Awards, Filming Clone Scenes and Orphan Black Season 3

10 Feb

Obviously we are very deep into movie award season – red carpet posts dominate TV Ate My Wardrobe at this point – and while TV accolades are pretty much done until the Emmys at the end of the summer we want to share this delightful Gold Derby interview with Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany, which took place a few weeks ago just prior to the SAG Awards.

This interview is perfect lunch break length and covers a number of topics including the various awards she has and hasn’t been nominated for. The lack of Emmy nomination outrage also comes up and Maslany invokes Amy Poehler’s pudding metaphor from Say Yes. These interviews take place across the internet waves via Google Hangout and there is an intimacy to them (as well as the odd technical bump) despite interviewer and subject being in different locations and it is one reason why we have shared several Gold Derby interviews in the past (including Josh Charles and Keri Russell). I am also a little bit obsessed with Tatiana Maslany’s mass of hair which is invoking all the Felicity related feelings.

Tatiana MaslanyIn terms of season 3 Maslany doesn’t go into too much detail offering up vague hints including the ominous sounding estranged relationships between the clones and how some will falter while others will be strong enough to withstand the conflict they face. She also discusses how the male clone story which was introduced last year allows them to explore more aspects of nature versus nurture from the other side of the coin as well as the sprawling conspiracy. Plus it gives her more time off. Some of the filming process is highlighted and Maslany is quick to point out how valuable her clone double Kathryn Alexandre is. The big dance sequence from the season 2 finale is referenced and as they become more comfortable with the technical side of filming they are “challenging the limits of the format” even more in season 3.

After doing a brief stint on Parks and Recreation back in season 5 (which Maslany speaks of with immense fondness) she is asked which current TV shows she would like to appear on and they are all TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites including Broad City; Tatiana Maslany is “crazy about those girls.”

Orphan Black returns Saturday, April 18 and I cannot wait.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

29 Jan

Welcome to this week’s edition of Behind the Insta-Scenes and it is a mixture of more awards shenanigans mixed in with set antics.

Mark Ruffalo couldn’t attend the SAG awards but I applaud his choice of location and pajamas upon hearing the news he had won for The Normal Heart. I love red carpet fashion (as you can probably tell) and yet I would love to see a bed wear approach more often.

Abbie’s boot collection on Sleepy Hollow is a sight to behold and envy.

Reminding everyone to watch the show by sharing this very cute photo of the Girls ladies is Allison Williams. This doesn’t reflect the emotional state of the characters at the moment, but maybe by the end of the season at least one of them will feel either professionally or personally fulfilled. Maybe.

I don’t think there’s much to add to Pedro Pascal’s already perfect caption.

Another amazing pair from the SAG awards looking foxy as hell.

Dispatches from Sundance (or returning from) and I am strongly feeling Mindy’s look. Oh and here is the amazing panel they both took part in.

The selfie that we didn’t get to see on this week’s Looking in all its glory thanks to Frankie J. Alvarez. I would like a look at all the different versions please.

The Wish List: April Ludgate’s Prints, Patterns and Stripes

28 Jan

Parks and Recreation is coming to an end (*sob*) and there is a lot I’m going to miss about the show including how it can make me laugh and cry in equal measure; sometimes as with last week’s episode both at the same time. TV Ate My Wardrobe was in part created as a result of how often I would comment on April Ludgate’s costuming and for that I am grateful, but also sad as there is only a limited amount of outfits to covet and I still have yet to find the elusive perfect mustard yellow hoodie.

Multiple outfits standout from this week’s double bill with bold prints on display throughout and several Tory Burch pieces.

April 7.05First up from “Gryzzlbox” is this floral beauty (disdainful scowl not included, but can be perfected) from Cooper & Ella.

April Ludgate 4.05Also from “Gryzzlbox” is this striped and dotty pattern clashing dream that I love as much as Craig’s lists (“Watermelon martinis, exposed brick, Keri Russell’s hair”) with Band of Outsiders on top and Tory Burch ‘Klarissa’ skirt.

April 7.06 Parks and RecIn the second of the Parks double bill – two episodes is lovely each week but it means the end is nigh – April’s pattern top glory continues with this Opening Ceremony multicolor print tee. Plus bonus Leslie floral goodness in you guessed it, Tory Burch.

April 7.06And one final April Ludgate ensemble and while it’s not clear from the shot above this is a polka dot doozy from Tory Burch. The skirt it is paired with over at Farfetch looks a whole lot like the leather pleated one Aubrey Plaza wore and featured on TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Best of 2014 list. An outfit to make my ultimate covet board:

Leather pleatsExpect more April Ludgate and Parks and Recreation musings before the end of the season.

Best of the 2015 SAG Awards – Black, White and Shimmer

26 Jan

Welcome to Part 2 of the SAG Awards coverage and while color was a big trend there was plenty of fantastic black, white and sparkly gowns on display. Check out our faves below.

Viola DavisViola Davis won for How to Get Away with Murder and did so in a stunning custom MaxMara halter gown in one of the best looks of the night.

Sarah PaulsonA surprising turn from Sarah Paulson in black and white Giorgio Armani. Surprising in that it manages to look different to a lot of other red carpet attire without landing in the usual ‘huh’ spot Paulson favors.

Joanne FroggattJoanne Froggatt does the whole black mermaid gown thing but what elevates this Honor gown is the pointed bodice.

Lorelei LinklaterA very different black Honor gown for Lorelei Linklater and I love the gothy vibe and bell sleeves. This looks like something April Ludgate would wear to an awards show and I cannot wait to see what Lorelei will wear to the Oscars (and what color hair streak she opts for). Bonus red lip color points also awarded.

Maggie GyllenhaalMaggie Gyllenhaal’s custom Thakoon white gown is very Nessa Stein and I love that her Honourable Woman character’s style is sneaking in on this red carpet.

Chelsea PerettiNew favorite couple alert! Chelsea Peretti’s midnight blue Rubin Singer gown has a gold shimmer and Jordan Peele’s all black suit perfectly complements the look without going matchy matchy.

Amy Poehler and Natasha LyonneAnother perfect pair and both are going for the beaded sparkle thing with Amy Poehler in Jenny Packham and Natasha Lyonne in custom Proenza Schouler. Fun shenanigans look like they are being had.

Reese WitherspoonOff the shoulder was a big trend at the SAGs with plenty opting for color and asymmetric; Reese Witherspoon avoids looking bridal in custom Giorgio Armani adding sparkle with the sequin diagonal strip.

Kelly Macdonald and Gretchen MolBoardwalk Empire ladies reunion and Kelly Macdonald’s black vintage Moschino is how you do a shorter length at an event like this, even if it does look slightly casual next to Gretchen Mol in an ethereal Dennis Basso silver gown.

Jackie CruzAnother custom Christian Siriano frock for an Orange is the New Black actress and Jackie Cruz is a sequinned gold beauty.

Emmy RossumThis photo doesn’t quite convey how much sparkle there is on Emmy Rossum’s Swarovski crystal infused Armani Privé gown, but she looks stunning nonetheless.

Nikolaj Coster-WaldauSwitching to a couple of fine looking dudes and Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau wears a tuxedo as well as he does a suit of armor.

Eddie RedmayneDoing the lean! And this time Eddie Redmayne’s choice of suit is a Prada double breasted affair; another super charming approach and style win.

Best of the Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet: Black Frocks, Crop Tops, Tuxes and Everything Else

12 Jan

Rounding out the TV Ate My Wardrobe 2015 Golden Globe coverage with a smorgasbord of style highs with some daring approaches and a whole array of classic looks. Plus a couple of family portraits.

Lorde GGNo I did not think a crop top would pop up on this list, but thanks to Lorde in an incredible Narciso Rodriguez ensemble this is a thing that has happened. I want this jacket in my life.

Claire DanesThis might be down to Danes style blindness but I love this Valentino frock (which Claire Danes referred to as a work of art on E!), well aside from the sheer panel. Ace earrings too.

Jessica ChastainWhile Jessica Chastain’s Atelier Versace gown is giving me all the Amy Adams American Hustle feelings and thereby it isn’t setting the world on fire, Chastain still looks super sexy and incredible.

Gina Rodriguez GGGina Rodriguez follows in the Golden Globe first season award winning group for sometimes teen show affairs – which includes Claire Danes, Keri Russell and Jennifer Garner – and she played it safe in black Badgley Mischka. She looks flawless and I can even see beyond the fringed sheer skirt. As I lamented yesterday I still need to watch Jane the Virgin and her speech was one of the many misty eye inducing moments.

Allison TolmanAllison Tolman opted for a similar shape gown to the one she wore at the Emmys and why not when it looks this good. Great accessory choices and overall styling.

Eddie Redmanye GGEddie Redmayne did not disappoint with his choice of Gucci tuxedo and there’s not a lot of guys who could work the velvet look this well. Love the olive color and cut of Hannah Bagshawe’s frock. Yes the lean is happening.

Jake and MaggieHappy sibling time and the Gyllenhaal’s are a delight. Jake gets beard points and while I think Maggie’s dress would be better in a bolder color (I thought blue whereas Whitney McIntosh suggested green) the Miu Miu frock is still lovely. Maggie Gyllenhaal winning for The Honourable Woman was another excellent speech moment:

“I’ve noticed a lot of people talking about the wealth of roles for powerful women in television lately, and when I look around the room at the women who are in here and I think about the performances that I’ve watched this year, what I see actually are women who are sometimes powerful and sometimes not. Sometimes sexy, sometimes not. Sometimes honorable, sometimes not. And what I think is new is the wealth of roles for actual women in television and in film.”

BoyhoodA celebratory portrait of the Boyhood family and I am all over Lorelei Linklater’s pink dip dyed hair and this is another sheer moment that in a surprise twist is working for me.

Tina and Amy tux heartGoing to end with two of the ladies of the night and the biggest swoon moment came from Tina Fey’s lady tux of amazing. This is hosting attire perfection. Another beautiful blue gown for Amy Poehler.

While it is still up on YouTube here is their searing, hilarious and incredible opening monologue:

Best of the Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet: The Color Wheel

12 Jan

Red isn’t the only color that was on trend at the Golden Globes and a variety of strong hues made a dramatic impact.

Naomi WattsYellow is a color I am constantly drawn to and while it is going to be hard to top my ultimate red carpet moment Naomi Watts in Gucci is a contender for best dressed last night. Bold red lip and the snake necklace add to the impact of this look.

Julia Goldani TellesAs Samantha Powell pointed out on Twitter last night there was a serious lack of heavyweights wearing Oscar de la Renta, however The Affair’s Julia Goldani Telles is stunning in this striking blue Oscar de la Renta ball gown. More bonus lipstick points getting dished out.

Felicity JonesNow this is the kind of gown a nominee should be wearing and Felicity Jones is a standout in Dior Couture. The teal color and especially the cut with the high neckline is giving me so many good feelings. A lot of the Theory of Everything love has been directed towards Eddie Redmayne (who won last night), but it is Jones who I am in awe of.

LupitaSo this isn’t a full red carpet shot of the Giambattista Valli gown that would probably be a bit much on someone who doesn’t have the style queen prowess of Lupita Nyong’o – the bodice detail is incredible but could overwhelm – but I really wanted to include a shot of her wearing glasses. Also this is what I assume is Colin Farrell’s True Detective look.

Leslie MannAnother stunning yellow with Leslie Mann in Kaufmanfranco and I love the contrast with the bold Ferragamo green clutch. Also this red lipstick.

Amy Poehler and Natasha LyonneA pair of blue beauties and Amy Poehler’s Stella McCartney pocketed ensemble is another dress which is giving me 70s vibe. Natasha Lyonne is also working this bold shade of blue in Reem Acra.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week – Best of 2014 Part 2

2 Jan

One last look back to 2014 with the second part of our Best of 2014 rundown. There have been a lot of amazing style moments and here are some of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s favorites from this weekly column. For Part 1 head here.

Best Magazine Cover Part 2

GOT Vanity FairThis cover came out before I’d seen any of the show and I bought the issue anyway knowing that I would want it when I had caught up. And I’m glad I did as Annie Leibovitz’s shoot is stunning and it not only showcases the incredible various costume design styles, but when else are you going to see Daenerys sitting next to Cersei with Jon Snow hanging out at the top of the pile?!

Best Sundance Couple

Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson SundanceThe Sundance Film Festival is fast approaching which means winter threads aplenty and Diane Kruger’s take on layering in Ports 1961 is super chic. Joshua Jackson’s got a slightly more casual look and this is how to do couples tweed.

Best Stripes

Jessica WilliamsStripes are one of my several clothing weaknesses and Jessica Williams looks stunning in Tanya Taylor for Paper magazine’s aptly titled Beautiful People issue.

Best Teen

Kiernan ShipkaThere is only one contender here as Kiernan Shipka continues to kill it on the red carpet and she nails it pretty much every time blowing her other Mad Men co-stars out of the water. This Max Mara ensemble from back in June is slightly edgier thanks to the leather skirt and by pairing it with a soft silk white top it doesn’t go too teen rebellion. The pop of yellow is a very fun touch and I adore her.

Best Talkshow Entrance

Amy PoehlerAmy Poehler does fall fashion in the city with aplomb as she headed into David Letterman in October to promote her aces book Yes Please. Coat and boot coveting is occurring.

Best Summer TCA Part 2

Lizzy Caplan TCAAnother Roksanda stunner for TCA this time from the party portion with Lizzy Caplan in this amazing color block creation paired with equally electric Brian Atwood pumps.

Best Premiere Frock

Elizabeth BanksThis is the perfect gown for a HUGE premiere event (would also be a great Oscar dress) and Elizabeth Banks shows how it is done in Elie Saab Couture at the Mockingjay Part 1 world premiere in London.

Best Creative Arts Emmys Red Carpet

Uzo AdubaThe Emmys before the Emmys and Orange is the New Black’s Uzo Aduba won the Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series while looking incredible in a white Costume National without looking the remotest bit bridal.

Best Critics’ Choice TV Awards

Tatiana MaslanyThe woman of many faces and Tatiana Maslany took home Best Actress for the second year in a row at the Critics’ Choice TV Awards in a Cushnie et Ochs floaty frock. The splash of red lipstick and pumps is the color injection this look needs.

Best Best Friends

Leighton Meester and Gillian JacobsWhile promoting Life Partners there has been a whole lot of TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites Leighton Meester and Gillian Jacobs much to my delight. I really love this shot of them from the LA premiere. Yes I want to get brunch with them.

Best London Fashion Week

Felicity Jones BurberryThis is from the February LFW for the Fall ’14 collections and it is all Burberry Prorsum for Felicity Jones pairing a simple lemon chiffon color sweater and a beautiful gold jacquard print pencil skirt.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

18 Dec

Last Friday saw the final day of shooting on Parks and Recreation and the cast and crew thoroughly documented the day; so this week’s Behind the Insta-Scenes is going to be an all Parks special. The tag #ThankYouParksCrew is repeated along with sadness as this show comes to an end.

Group outdoors shot with a lovely park providing the backdrop.

And another bigger group photo this time in the Pawnee Courthouse and courtesy of the Douche himself, Nick Kroll. “Old Stoneface” makes an on the wall cameo.

Take that Oscar selfie.

Super sad faces.

Super smiley badass faces.

Jean-Ralphio has always had the best biggest hair as is evident in Ben Schwartz’s photo from his first day on set back in 2009.

Writer Greg Levine shared both old and new photos including picking out Leslie’s wedding ring – the proposal is in my top 5 Parks moments – and I’m glad to see Adam Scott here for this decision,

A vital sign when Andy Dwyer is around; don’t put your whole mouth over the spout.

And it is over. Now to see those final episodes.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

31 Oct

“Out of the Box” is a smorgasbord of fancy pants attire, amazing winter coats (thankfully it has finally turned to outerwear requiring climates), new album artwork and an A-list movie star talking gender politics and Borgen.

Amy Poehler Yes Please hit stores this week and Amy Poehler has been doing the talk show rounds to promote her new book. This is a very cool and perfect look for New York in the fall. This is both excellent coat and ankle boot porn.

Zendaya ColemanContinuing the excellent coat trend is Zendaya Coleman before her Good Morning America appearance on Monday wearing a green tweed Karolyn Pho coat with a super funky Cheng-Huai Chuang drop-waist dress. Both are striking and the black tights/Prada Mary Janes are the spot on choice for this ’60s inspired daytime look.

Hannah SimoneSometimes a simple black dress is all you need and Hannah Simone looks statuesque at a party in LA celebrating the opening of Dsquared2’s first boutique in the US.

She and HimMeanwhile, one of Hannah Simone’s New Girl cast mates has been busy over the summer hiatus recording a new album covering classic tracks including Dusty Springfield’s “Stay Awhile.” This week the new She & Him artwork has been unveiled and the ’60s is infused in both the song material and imagery; Zooey Deschanel and M Ward look like they should be in a black and white French movie. In not shocking news I am very much coveting Deschanel’s striped tee/skirt look and her less blocky bangs suit this not so twee styling.

Keira PorterKeira Knightley appears in Net-a-Porter’s The Edit this week promoting upcoming films The Imitation Game and Laggies (or Say When if you are in the UK). In the interview Knightley discusses feminism, inequality and ingrained ideas of how things are meant to be and it is her comments about Borgen that caught my attention, the rule is if someone talks about this show I will get excited:

“There’s a storyline in Borgen [the TV drama about the first female prime minister of Denmark] where her husband is freaking out because he’s not seeing his wife anymore and the wife isn’t seeing the kids because she doesn’t have enough time, so he’s going to leave her. And as a viewer, I went, ‘Oh my God, she has to give up her job! She needs to spend more time with her family.’ Then I realized, ‘Wait, if it was a guy playing the prime minister and his wife was freaking out, you’d go, ‘Shut up, woman! He’s the fucking prime minister, give him a fucking break!’ I’m a feminist, somebody who is saying there’s a fucking problem, and I’m thinking that.”

The interview also covers why Knightley doesn’t want to play the fairy tale roles any more – “Why should you be told to wait for some fucking dude to rescue you?” – getting older and what kind of projects she is drawn to now she is approaching 30. The clothes accompanying this profile are stunning including Delpozo dress in the shot above.

Best of the Emmy Red Carpet 2014: Metallics, Nudes and Everything Else

26 Aug

Completing the trilogy of Emmy red carpet posts and while there are unifying themes for the first two parts (black/white and bold color) this is a best of the rest with sparkly silver delights, capes and a variety of lengths just to mix it up.

Christine BaranskiThere’s a reason why this post on Diane Lockhart’s style is the most viewed on TV Ate My Wardrobe and Christine Baranski’s navy and caped (!) gown is giving me chills. I am in awe of this magnificent woman. During the ceremony when Josh Charles didn’t win she leaned forward and gave his shoulder a squeeze; making me sad all over again that there will be no more whiskey drinking or dancing on screen.

Amy PoehlerLooking like an Art Deco dream is Amy Poehler in Theia and while she might never receive an Emmy for Parks and Rec (come on guys you have one more chance, ditto Jon Hamm) this is a winner.

Hayden+Panettiere+Arrivals+66th+Annual+Primetime+eNZynLTBooPlKeeping on the silver streak is Hayden Panettiere in a plunging fitted sequined chiffon Lorena Sarbu gown and the silhouette here is incredible. Sometimes the best red carpet shots are the unposed kind like this one.

Kiernan Shipka emmysThe color is maybe a bit too muted, however Kiernan Shipka continues her excellent sartorial choices with a tea-length Antonio Berardi dress and the sash beading is what really tips this into sublime territory. During the red carpet I found a photo of Shipka from the 2010 Emmys giving me a whole lot of protective feelings about what Shipka is going to do next and how we’ve watched her grow up during her time on Mad Men.

Jessica WilliamsA few days ago Jessica Williams gave a sneak peek of her gold embellished knee length Angela Dean dress on Instagram and it looked fantastic paired with Nike sneakers and even better on the red carpet.

Sarah SilvermanE! are not satisfied with just mani-cam, GlamCam 360, shoe cam so this year they decided to take a more invasive look with clutch cam to showcase the bags and their contents. While most just  had their phones, Sarah Silverman showed off her contents including her vape pen (Ilana approves) taking over the role of Elisabeth Moss mischief maker. Silverman also ditched her shoes when she went dashing up to collect her Emmy – a smart move – and she looks incredible in plunging Marni. She called Michael Sheen “Mr Fancy Pants Sheen” which is also adorable.

Allison WilliamsGoing full prom is Allison Williams in a very Allison Williams looking Giambattista Valli Couture gown. I like it and especially the dash of yellow.

Lucy LiuLast year nude gowns dominated and I’m glad the 2014 Emmys weren’t a repeat of this trend, however Lucy Liu wears this ethereal color well in a beautiful Zac Posen draped gown.
