Out of the Box: Look of the Week

20 Nov

After last week’s pants and ladysuits affair we are returning to a dress filled “Out of the Box” with plenty of bold color, pattern (SO MANY STRIPES) and statement frocks. The pitter patter of awards campaigning is upon us plus premieres and other end of year events are bringing these sartorial treats.

Krysten RitterHappy Jessica Jones Day! And Krysten Ritter looks phenomenal at the New York premiere in ethereal Zuhair Murad Resort 2016 demonstrating the ideal amount of sheer. I am very excited to start this new Netflix series and I’m sure I will have some thoughts on here in the next week or so (depending on how quickly I burn through it).

Lizzy CaplanAnother floaty white ensemble delight from Lizzy Caplan in Thakoon at the Night Before premiere, which manages to capture festive cheer in a subtle fashion. Plus another lesson in sheer that doesn’t make me sadness sigh.

Teyonah ParrisThe Academy events are here and at the 7th annual Governors Awards on Saturday, Teyonah Parris wore this stripe Pedram Couture beauty. Black and metallic silver are perfect for this time of year and Parris is always on top form on the red carpet.

Brie LarsonBrie Larson keeps it super simple in Calvin Klein and stands out in doing so. I cannot wait to see much more of her on the red carpet this award season. Still very much feeling her reaction to Cate Blanchett in a jumpsuit.

Ava DuVernayAnother flawless block color dress and Ava DuVernay’s blue peplum Elvira Jude is striking, as are the gold pumps which are peeking out the bottom.

Emily BluntEmily Blunt is a TV Ate My Wardrobe fave both on and off screen; she constantly makes interesting choices including this shimmery Marc Jacobs resort frock. Loving the leather collar.

Kerry WashingtonKerry Washington adds to the stripe joy in a matching Saloni top and skirt with thankfully not quite matchy matchy Nicholas Kirkwood chevron pumps at the inaugural WWD/Variety Stylemakers event. The work of Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo was recognized with Washington presenting her with the award and after ditching Scandal this season, I just watched the mid-season finale and those costumes really are everything. This one had it all from the fanciest of frocks to incredible coats and an all important wine cardigan, plus the episode was also really great.

Kirsten DunstNow this is pretty much a dream dress and Kirsten Dunst has been appearing a lot on here recently; I think this Gucci chevron-striped frock might be my favorite as it has a very 70s feel to it without looking like she has just come straight from the set of Fargo.

Elizabeth Banks MockingjayPretty Much the Dream Dress Part 2 with Elizabeth Banks in a colorful sequin stripe Dolce & Gabbana number at the LA Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 premiere and this has festive party written all over it.

Elizabeth BanksDouble Elizabeth Banks this week as I couldn’t resist this Giulietta fun play on the LBD at the VH1 Big in 2015 with Entertainment Weekly Awards.

Aubrey PlazaAnd now a twist on a white sporty style mini dress from Aubrey Plaza paired with stacked strappy heels giving this an overall retro feel.

Abbi, Ilana and AmyI just realized that season 3 of Broad City isn’t too far away (okay slightly further away than expected as yesterday it was announced its return will be February 17 instead of the usual January window) and I definitely don’t need an excuse to post a photo of these amazing ladies.

Attending the Worldwide Orphans Gala (of which Amy Poehler has served as an Ambassador of the Arts since 2013) they struck the balance between casual and fancy with Ilana’s matching crop top and skirt combo working like a charm and I am so here for Abbi’s floral wrap. Amy’s sparkly skirt is also super festive appropriate and this outfit also reminds me of how much I love/agree with Rachel Syme’s recent tights essay (although I would’ve gone with a different color pump).

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

19 Nov

Welcome to another “Behind the Insta-Scenes” and this week we have Looking treats, amazing set decorations, some early holiday cheer and an Americans plot suggestion.

This reaction is why I feel comfortable saying – Brie Larson, just like us.

Pushing Daisies is in my permanent rotation of bedtime watching and so I can’t even deal with this photo that Anna Friel posted yesterday tbh.

The boys, the boys. Does this mean no Dom mustache?

I heart Lauren Weedman so much. Now I have a hankering to rewatch “Looking for a Plot.”

Working on a Sunday feelings.

Sarah Steele gives excellent skeptical face and I am always thrilled when she comes to play on The Good Wife. Will Marissa be happy with her father’s mental state of mind this time?

Now all I want is for Paige to pull a Taylor Swift and spill all her secrets in the form of catchy pop songs. Working album title “They’re Russians.” Clues includes in the liner notes. Might spell out ‘Maple Latte’

Annet Mahendru goes on her own top secret mission scouting out Dupont Circle Travel and all their personal touches. The set dressing detail on The Americans is fantastic as is their collection of family photos.

What every Thanksgiving dinner prep needs.

Moving on to the next holiday and a very different location. Scandal is killing it with the set decoration.

And it is Christmas on Jane the Virgin with a double serving of Mateo in a super cute festive outfit.

Meanwhile, also on Jane these guys are trying out another fashion idea.

On New Girl they’re bringing back parka chic. And it is working.

Soon!

Closing things out this week with a mostly smile filled Hunger Games selfie. Amazing lipstick game from JLaw.

Claire Danes Covers Allure: Talks MSCL, 90s Style and Body Shaming

18 Nov

Whenever Claire Danes talks about My So-Called Life it lights up a very specific nostalgia spot and so this comment in the December issue of Allure feels like it could be directly referencing me “they loved the show, that it was really meaningful to them when they were going through a bad, chaotic, murky time of being a teenager” Yep all of that is very accurate and the MSCL’s pop culture position stretches far beyond its 18-episode run (it got to the final in Vulture’s recent High School TV Showdown) and Danes discusses how this has impacted her “I feel a real loyalty to my generation. I think your identity is sort of set in your teenage years. And my cultural identity was set at that same time.”

What struck me about the shot used here of Claire Danes and Winona Ryder from 1996 is how I had forgotten that I didn’t just model my hairstyle on Michelle Williams, but Danes was a HUGE influence too – I was too scared to go for the full Winona pixie cut – and this barrette/zigzag side parting became one of my signature looks. In fact I’m actually wearing a barrette right now while typing this as like Danes my hair constantly falls in front of my face and I really need a haircut. This whole slideshow is a delight going from on and off screen style from MSCL to now including some rather dreamy takes about her relationship with Hugh Dancy.

Claire Danes Allure coverThe cover image goes full 90s with a darker lip color (Winona would approve) and this silk Lanvin dress is a stunning shade of blue; even if I would love to see a photo shoot in Danes endorsed overalls. Or maybe a little bit of plaid. But as far as glam editorials go this one is good, if not a little run of the mill. And while one of the topics covered is the much discussed cry face phenomenon, my favorite shot is on the other end of the facial expression scale.

Claire Danes AllureI love a good cry face and one day I will set up the Cry Face Olympics of which there will many contenders from television and film. Danes will be a big hitter and even though I’m sure it is irritating to discuss this part of her acting style in every interview, she has softened her position from annoyance to yeah this is just what I do “I’m very vain about my performance. I want to give as honest a performance as I can. But I’m not so worried about being regarded as beautiful when I’m playing a character.” What she says about body image is also pretty inspiring and how there are all these different factors at play. We can be more than one thing.

“It’s just so ingrained in us, the idea that we should take up the right amount of space, literally and figuratively. I’ve wrestled with this my whole life, as just a person in the world and as somebody who makes images. It’s OK to want to look and feel your best. It’s OK to work at being attractive, whatever that means to you. And it’s also OK to not expect to be defined by that. It’s OK to be powerful in every way: to be big, to take up space. To breathe and thrive.”

For more from the Claire Danes Allure interview including this video where she goes through many of her famous looks such as Angela’s red hair and those angel wings head here.

New Agent Carter Season 2 Trailer and Peggy’s New Sunglasses

18 Nov

2016 will be kicking off to a good start when Agent Carter returns on Tuesday, January 5 to ABC with a two-hour premiere event. Peggy is making the move from New York to Hollywood and while she certainly could make an amazing film star there are matters of national security that she will be preoccupied with.

In the season 2 trailer we see several returning faces such as James D’Arcy as Jarvis and Enver Gjokaj as Daniel Sousa, plus new cast member Reggie Austin who looks set to be a new love interest for Peggy. Queen of the double cross Bridget Regan will be back as arch enemy Dottie although she isn’t in the new preview. Sadly it doesn’t look like Peggy’s bestie Angie will be making the trip west and while Lyndsy Fonseca was definitely in talks to appear in this new season there hasn’t been any confirmation of this.

Here is the first look at Peggy in Los Angeles courtesy of the official Agent Carter Twitter including plenty of fantastic costuming and red lipstick to gaze in wonder at. Get ready to swoon at all things Hayley Atwell.

And here she is in a first still disembarking from the plane looking cool as fuck in red sunglasses. Sunglasses which rival Gretchen from You’re the Worst for how much I’m coveting them (regular readers will know this is a big deal). The sunny climate calls for appropriate accessorizing and they also make an appearance in the trailer and red is an important color in Peggy’s lookbook.

Update! For anyone wondering what make the sunglasses are, Steve in the comments helpfully notes that they are by Celine.

Update Part 2! Thanks to Ashley in the comments the sunglasses have now been identified as coming from Old Focals and this has been confirmed by Agent Carter costume designer Giovanna Melton on Twitter.IMG_3144For more Agent Carter including key art for the new season (with Peggy in signature red and blue) head here and check back for more updates.

Update! Agent Carter will return later this month (January 19) and sadly not this week (because the State of the Union is happening earlier – thanks, Obama). But still not that long to go before we get to see Peggy in all her glory again. Get the red lipstick at the ready.

Degrees of Caring on The Good Wife

16 Nov

Alicia Florrick has got her groove back and her DGAF attitude is aided by how well she knows the political game. The line between public and private life was shattered long ago when she stood behind Peter during THAT press conference and everything since has been a navigation of this moment. Now Peter is running for president there is a renewed and deeper level of scrutiny of their relationship including their living arrangement – thanks Vice – but there are ways of pretending. In the past Alicia would have been frustrated by this turn of events; now she is the embodiment of a shoulder shrug even though her apartment has been taken over by Peter’s campaign.

Her home life isn’t the only thing being invaded by faces from the past and the case of the week sees a return to Lockhart, Agos (and Lee). Louis Canning is the opposing council and he is the one who sent the client to Alicia making this a threeway of sorts with a whole lot of history. Alicia doesn’t let this fluster her and it isn’t like the time she returned to the office after her last split from the firm (cue memories of Will and all the sadness). There are no bad feelings on Alicia’s end even if Diane recently visited her apartment and accused her of sabotage. In fact Alicia has fun with this case and doesn’t go easy on either side much to the chagrin/amusement of the opposing counsel.

The Good Wife 7.07 Alicia and LuccaIt is Lucca Quinn’s first trip to Alicia’s old stomping ground and she envisions Alicia as the “Queen Bee Bitch” and rather than taking offense to this, Alicia laughs at this notion remarking that she is a “much calmer person now.” I’m not sure I would call Alicia a “Queen Bee Bitch” and to borrow a phrase from Donna on Parks and Recreation she is more often a Boss Bitch over a Bitch Boss.

The look on Cary and Diane’s face when Alicia walks into the deposition is priceless; almost as spectacular as Diane’s colorful jacket and gold necklace combo.

The Good Wife 7.07 Cary and DianeWhat they are up against is a confident Alicia and part of this comes from a renewed sense of control now she is her own boss once again. Yes she is getting clients courtesy of Louis Canning, but she isn’t letting this sway how she proceeds with a case and she goes just as hard against Canning as she ever has. These are no longer the things that fluster her and she’s over caring about her old firm. In a way I do wish there had been some interactions between Alicia and Diane/Cary outside of the deposition because I am always here for those and yet it was probably more effective having her come in and leave in a purely professional capacity.

There is an edginess to her costuming this week and I appreciate that she was already in the leather accented ensemble before she got the case. She didn’t just pick this because she was returning to her old workplace and it also works incredibly well for all the eye rolls and exasperated facial expressions at Eli’s campaign calls.

The Good Wife 7.07 Alicia FlorrickYou know what it also works for? Homemade margarita infused contract signings. The Alicia/Jason relationship edges toward something more and Alicia’s desire to talk is clearly a desire to do something else. And I’m not just talking tacos (her reaction to them being in date was almost as good as her uncontrollable laughter when Jackie announces her engagement to Howard). Alicia loses the jacket and the leather sheath Narciso Rodriguez dress is the perfect seduction outfit.

The Good Wife 7.07 Alicia and JasonThis is classic Alicia when it comes to a guy that isn’t Peter as she tiptoes around the inevitable. We saw it on many occasions with Will where things almost happened and even if they did she had a habit of finding a reason to stop (okay still being married is a good reason I guess). She didn’t even go beyond a chaste hand touching moment with Finn and there was plenty of opportunity for that to move from flirty drinks to more. Johnny happened but that was a snoozer. And now we have Jason.

This week the cockblock comes courtesy of Vice and their comments about Alicia and Peter’s living situation. Cue an extended stay from Peter and a taco party interruption. Alicia’s DGAF attitude extends to this arrangement and after a particularly good cross she propositions her husband. Peter is also feeling pretty fucking great as he’s just secured a $1 million donation and this is an ideal time for no strings sex. When Alicia and Peter have hooked up in the past it has sometimes been in reaction to outward influences such as parents or Alicia denying her Will feelings; this time it is simply a case of feeling horny and Peter is the uncomplicated choice. There’s no awkward fumbling and they pretty much get down to it in a very matter of fact way. It is notable that it happens in the spare room and not Alicia’s bed further adding to this not caring attitude. If it was in her bed it would mean something.

Alicia also wields her power by getting Peter to not pick up his phone. Yes there might be another $1 million donation on the other end, but a moment like this is fleeting. Post hook up it is pretty chill even with Eli banging on the door and she points out that she was the one who initiated it saying that it is always sexier not to care and that sex is sexier without love. I’m not sure Alicia actually believes the latter because Will, but I think she wants to believe and does so in this moment. She is very good at protecting her heart. And also this reaction to Eli’s judgmental face is my favorite.

The Good Wife 7.07 Alicia bed headLater on when Eli tries to get a rise out of her she tells him that the old Alicia would have been bothered, but not now as the “new me just doesn’t care.” Control plays an important role in this change of attitude; “Bad things happen or they don’t. But there’s just too much craziness in the world.” This also goes back to what happened to Will and his presence is still subtly felt two years later. Eli is the one who worries too much and it is maybe time for him to take a page from the Alicia Florrick way of thinking. It also looks like Eli is taking a break from Operation Destroy Ruth (and Peter) as he has his wooing cap on for Vanessa Williams’ Courtney Page. Another excellent guest star to add to the already long list of excellent Good Wife guest stars.

It isn’t all smooth sailing for Alicia this week and Frank Landau continues to be the angry controlling thorn in her side. He’s all blustery faced threats and the challenge is to find a way to nail him to the wall without implicating anyone else. Inner conflict turns outward with this graphic print jacket from Lafayette 148.

The Good Wife 7.07 that lookThere’s no easy fix to this and I wonder if our friends at the NSA will prove useful when it comes to sorting the Frank problem out. For now Alicia finds herself in a difficult position and it is one area where her level of control is severely reduced and her ability to not care isn’t going to work here.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

12 Nov

For once on “Out of the Box” we’ve got more pants than frocks and it’s not just ladysuits hitting those sartorial highs. It is fun to mix things up especially as there has already been a fancy shindig this week that featured plenty of fabulous looks.

Keri RussellKeri Russell loves a leather pant and this all black ensemble that she wore to the Sierra Club’s “Act in Paris, A Night of Comedy and Climate Action” is very much her signature fuss free style. That doesn’t mean to say it’s a boring outfit and the variety of textures elevate the look. A slightly darker red lipstick is very welcome especially paired with this up do. For a bolder Keri Russell color palette take a gander at these Americans season 4 filming photos. Actual screaming at those boots.

Olivia WildeThis is Olivia Wilde’s third appearance on “Out of the Box” in almost as many weeks and while each one has been distinctive in its own way; the choice of shoe color has remained the same. Red pumps have given each look an extra pop and I am in love with this 70s inspired spin on tailored menswear that Wilde chose to wear for the Hollywood Reporter’s Indie Contenders roundtable. Yes I am thrilled that another roundtable season is upon us. The windowpane check high waisted Houghton pants are pure Annie Hall and the Kate Spade New York blouse adds a feminine twist.

Brit MarlingOh hey there Brit Marling! You can join #LadySuitWatch2015 with this flamboyant Gucci Resort pink affair at the LACMA 2015 Art+Film Gala. The pants are perhaps a little on the baggy side, which is giving me nostalgic flashbacks to everything 90s, but it’s still working like a charm. And one thing all the ladies in pants have in common this week is interesting collar/tie/scarf details.

Charlotte RamplingQueen Charlotte Rampling looking chic as hell at the AFI Fest event honoring Tom Courtney and her.

Kirsten DunstTaking a break from swooning over Kirsten Dunst’s Fargo costuming to bask in the delight which is this very pretty Rodarte dress.

Kirsten Dunst Net a PorterAnd now for swooning over Kirsten Dunst’s Net-a-Porter magazine editorial featuring a whole array of ladysuits; making it so on point with the overall theme of this week’s “Out of the Box.” Total kismet.

Taraji P. HensonTaraji P. Henson is on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter as part of the annual Beauty Issue making it her third time this year (the other covers are here and here) appearing with her makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff. They talk about avoiding Cookie like makeup on the red carpet so don’t expect to see any purple lipsticks and Taraji’s favorite red carpet look (the last Emmys). That is one killer brow arch that Henson is giving and the different shades of blue outfits add to this striking image.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

12 Nov

Master of None was how I spent my weekend and there’s a whole bunch of photos from this show on this week’s TV Instagram round-up including one that hit me right in the feels. Plus plenty of other set shenanigans from shows like ElementaryJane the Virgin and the forthcoming Legends of Tomorrow.

Future excellent Good Wife guest star and excellent Lucca Quinn outfit ahoy.

The excellent Master of None is definitely a family affair with Aziz Ansari’s parents playing his parents on the show and his brother Aniz collaborated on the writing end. I am now in a post marathoning funk.

And now things are getting a little misty up in here.

https://instagram.com/p/908CUZpqOY/?taken-by=daniebb3

I mentioned this a couple of days ago, but I really hope there is more Shannon in season 2 because Danielle Brooks killed it as Dev’s agent.

And you should definitely Treat Yo Self.

Mostly I just want an excuse to talk about how incredible Regina King is on The Leftovers this week (and every week) and the questionnaire scene with Carrie Coon is jaw-droppingly good. Powerhouse performances from both women and I am still thinking about it.

The cast of The Americans has just as much fun with the disguises as I do writing about them.

More from The Americans season 4 table reads and is that Dylan Baker I spy sitting there?

https://www.instagram.com/p/96sn3RQqBz/?taken-by=glenpowell

Scream Queens is pretty patchy; one person who has been consistently brilliant throughout is Glen Powell and he really can work a golf bro ensemble.

I want to see which character comes next in this chain. Maybe Andy Sachs.

Fake rain or real rain on Legends of Tomorrow? I will be very glad when this show starts because a) more Victor Garber on TV and b) Arrow and The Flash can go back to focusing on their own storylines rather than setting up the spinoff.

Elementary made a very welcome return last week and I am as happy as Lucy Liu and Aidan Quinn are delightful in this Jonny Lee Miller snapped shot.

I still need to watch last week’s episode and so I’m reading the look on Viola Davis’ face as one that is questioning my viewing choices.

Getting the Team Back Together on The X-Files: New Key Art

11 Nov

The X-Files promotional gifts have so far been all about the trailers hinting at both the overall conspiracy that binds these characters together and those pesky monsters that have a habit of causing mischief. Fox has just released new key art and while Mulder and Scully take center stage (of course) there are also a couple of familiar faces joining them. And their trusty flashlights.

The X FilesOh hey there Skinner and Cigarette Smoking Man (smoking a cigarette).

And for their hero pose. I’m kinda sad they’re not doing their crouched stance.

The X-Files Mulder and ScullyNow for my favorite and the one which evokes the kind of creepy atmosphere this show is so good at delivering. It looks like it could have been pulled straight from the opening credits. Plus it includes that all important piece of advice to live by if you happen to live in an endless cycle of conspiracies. You can totes trust your partner if their name is Mulder or Scully. That is a given.

The X-Files Scully and MulderThe X-Files returns Sunday, January 24 and that doesn’t seem all that far away now.

Best of the 2015 Glamour Women of the Year Awards

10 Nov

There is not a whole lot of 2015 left and time has a way of flying by as we near those end of year lists (I need to start working on mine) and last night the Glamour Women of the Year Awards were held at Carnegie Hall in New York City. This is always one of my favorites because it celebrates a range of women and achievements and I just feel so darn positive afterwards. For more on this year’s recipients head here.

Viola DavisViola Davis’ daughter dressed up as her mother winning an Emmy for Halloween and it was pretty much the most adorable costume ever. Davis is onto another winner in red and black with some really excellent accessorizing.

Lupita Nyong'oWe’re almost at Star Wars press tour time, which means we are in for a treat with way more Lupita Nyong’o red carpet looks are ahead of us. Going for understated elegance in Jason Wu and working it like a charm while on hand to present Misty Copeland with her award.

Dascha PolancoDascha Polanco is serving up caped excellence and giving amazing face. I think this is her best red carpet look to date.

Danielle BrooksAnother fabulous turn from an Orange is the New Black star with Danielle Brooks in a color blocking delight. Oh hey there pockets! Just to make this even better. Brooks is in Aziz Ansari’s new show Master of None and next season needs more of Dev’s ambitious agent Shannon, who is all about getting that Friends money.

Alex MorganThe whole US Women’s soccer team was honored at the event; deservedly so after their World Cup win and Alex Morgan’s red and purple floral gown is beautiful. More pocket plus points getting dished out.

SerenaSports stars slaying all over the place with Serena Williams demonstrating how to do sheer in a way that doesn’t make me want to weep from boredom.

Victoria and Brooklyn BeckhamThe big trends of the night were red and black; these tend to be in favor this time of year and Victoria Beckham embraced crimson in a dress from her own collection. Well if you are getting honored for your work in fashion then it makes sense to showcase your work. Brooklyn Beckham continues to follow in his father’s footsteps by looking rather dapper all suited up.

Amy, Eve and SelenaMore red and one thing I like about this photo other than the perfect red dress symmetry is how random this grouping is; I am so here for groups of people you don’t expect posing together. Amy Schumer’s red Alexander McQueen is a switch up from the LBDs she’s been sporting recently and I love a flared sleeve. Selena Gomez is mixing sweet with sexy in Valentino and Eve Hewson embraces the 90s with a lipstick Winona would be proud of.

Misty CopelandTurtlenecks are in favor again and Misty Copeland shows how they can be worn in a formal setting like this; playing with this classic look as she picks up her Woman of the Year Award.

Elisabeth MossMore 90s lipstick realness from Elisabeth Moss and she’s hitting the vampy line hard in this velvet and sheer frock. There is a danger of looking too washed out when your hair is this blonde and I’m not feeling the shoes, but 90s nostalgia wins out for me here because I am a sucker for this.

Reese WitherspoonOkay so I’m not crazy about Reese Witherspoon’s Erdem dress – the floral pattern/texture is great, it’s the lace neckline that makes it too fussy – but I love everything about her speech. Reese talks about her acting career and how ambition shouldn’t be a dirty word. She also discusses her production company and the exciting slate they have ahead:

“We have over 25 films in development and three television shows, and they all have female leads of different ages and different races and different jobs. Some are astronauts, some are soldiers, some are scientists, one is even a Supreme Court justice. They’re not just good or bad; they’re bold and hunted and dangerous and triumphant like the real women we meet every single day of our lives.”

The full speech is really inspiring and while I am in danger of sounding corny I do always feel extra motivated after reading about events like this.

Judith Light, Caitlyn Jenner and Cindi LeiveOne final and super fun photo with Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive hanging out with Woman of the Year, Caitlyn Jenner and the always amazing Judith Light. Light presented Jenner with her award and this is another great dress color symmetry shot. I also love that Jenner has taken her shoes off by this point because I am incapable of keeping a pair of heels on all night.

Serving Up Doubt on The Good Wife

9 Nov

The Good Wife goes all in this week with Peter’s campaign, a case that brings the NSA back into Alicia’s life – and some familiar faces – and an interesting discussion on diversity over at Lockhart, Agos and Lee. Eli’s schemes go full steam ahead until he realizes that his smoking gun will have a devastating impact on not just Peter, but Alicia too and Alicia gets in her own way when it comes to Jason Crouse. Like I said there is a lot going on in “Lies” and this forward momentum is what this season needs. Every week has been a case of “that was fun” and this is a vast improvement on last year, but we were nearing the point where it seemed unclear if it could be something more than that.

For all of the problems that followed the incredible strong season 5 one thing The Good Wife has is a very deep well of storylines and talent to pull from. There is still the matter of the election rigging which gave Peter the governorship that died along with Will (*sob*) and Alicia’s own voting scandal is very much at the forefront of Eli’s plot to ruin Ruth. This week also sees the return of the NSA dudes who are as much into the tangled love life of Alicia Florrick as we are (even if they can’t remember Will’s name) and never did I think I would laugh this much at goat videos.

It isn’t just that they have the best and longest guest star list on any TV show at the moment (maybe ever) or that their ability to rip from the headlines is incredibly strong (okay there was that one blip), but that they can weave the two together so seamlessly. The world the Kings have created is so rich and layered, which makes watching it such a pleasure.* Especially when the plot moves forward like this.

*Okay sometimes they drop plot points and characters in ways that are frustrating and you know what I’m going to yell, right?! WHERE DID ROBYN GO?

The Good Wife 7.06 Lucca and AliciaLet’s start with Alicia and Lucca; the case of the week is a gift from Canning and involves a tech firm – Running Milk – a wrongful termination and the NSA. Polygraphs are at the center of the firing and for all of Jason Crouse’s how to mess with a polygraph techniques (he did not opt for The Americans squeeze your anus Oleg advice) they come up short as the new test is being administered by a computer. It is impossible to use Jason’s inconclusive tactics with something automated as doubt is all about the emotional (as we will see with Eli later on).

There are a lot of small victories, followed immediately by hitting another brick wall and it is a tricky case because of the NSA involvement and what can and can’t be said in court. Also who can and can’t appear in court with Zach Woods making a return as Jeff Dellinger or the “poor man’s Edward Snowden.” Dellinger is living what he thinks is the covert and high life in Iceland, but he doesn’t realize the NSA are still listening in even with his list of precautions. Alicia under a blanket making this initial burner phone call did make me laugh a bunch.

The Good Wife 7.06 blanketThis gets them back on the Alicia Florrick phone tap and thanks to her innocuous use of the name Edward Snowden, this means they can listen into her conversations again. Hitting the big time now that Peter has thrown his hat fully into the presidential race.

Alicia has some other work concerns and when the question of insurance comes up she reveals her Jason related worries to Lucca regarding the judge punching incident. What this amounts to is classic self sabotaging Alicia; this is the woman who in part started her own firm as a way to cure her dizzying and mind clouding Will Gardner feelings. There is an obvious spark between Alicia and Jason and this could get complicated for a number of reasons such as her husband is running for president, they work together and well he might be unhinged. But right now all I want is for Alicia Florrick to get laid as it has been far too long. No I am not counting Johnny from last year and yes I am still mad about Finn. Just look at his mugshot. Even that is oozing so much grufty rugged charisma.

The Good wife 7.06 mugshotBad timing is what came between Alicia and Will, but really this is the excuse Alicia could use with any prospective beau. And Peter is the obstacle causing this. Now he is running for president and suddenly Alicia is potentially locked in for even more bad timing with anyone who might come her way. Switching out a goblet of wine for homemade no frills margaritas is meant to be a sign of Alicia’s reliance in booze, a warning sign of her impending despair if you will, but hitting the strong stuff makes sense when you factor in what the campaign trail now means for her.

This is a loss of freedom and privacy, which she has been trying to claw back since the pilot because the media is definitely going to bring up every single scandal they have been involved in. They may want to conjure up images of the Obamas, but they are far more Kennedy no matter how many matching outfits they wear.

The Good Wife 7.06 side by sideEli’s got a big decision to make and he’s got everything in place to humiliate Ruth and Peter. The problem with his Frank Landau plan is Alicia will get caught right in the middle and he clearly cares about her well being. Alicia knows he has something cooking so if this rigging scandal does come to light she will know he is the source. When Eli is watching the press conference he leans in and catches a glimmer of Alicia’s true feelings through her ‘good wife’ super smiles up on that podium. Yes she is baking in the outdoor attire while inside a sweltering gym, but that look is one of sadness that she is going through this public spectacle for Peter. Is this enough of a sign for Eli to go all steam ahead with this plot or did he misread this brief look?

Meanwhile over at Lockhart, Agos and Lee they have new summer interns to consider and the messy work politics takes a new direction this week. Work place diversity is on the docket and Cary wants to hire three dudes who look like him. He is not thrilled when Diane mentions this similarity to which Diane passionately rebukes him with “A lot of things that aren’t fair are true.” David Lee is all about getting the best and by best he means those who have been to Ivy League schools and Diane wants to mix things up and hire Monica. Monica doesn’t meet Cary and David Lee’s criteria and the discussion turns to diversity. Diane wants to challenge the usual hiring process and while Howard is Team Monica he doesn’t actually get a say because he isn’t a named partner. Ultimately Diane can’t get the guys to compromise and so Monica gets a friendly and patronizing ‘thanks, but no thanks.’

The Good Wife 7.06 diversityWhile Diane did fight for Monica, she doesn’t come across in an entirely positive light as she also talks to Monica in a way that would suggest that because she is black and from Baltimore she must have grown up in a bad neighborhood. The struggles that Diane and the others place on her are a stereotype and Monica is not here for Diane’s ‘understanding or advice’ and what she needs is a job. Diane loves to play the mentor and we have seen this time and time again using her experiences and placing it onto someone else. Sometimes this works, but in this situation it smacks of condescension. It is unnecessary for Diane to call Monica in to give her the kiss off, but this is Diane’s way of showing that she is the good guy here and alleviating her guilt. Monica sees through this bleeding heart routine and while Diane clearly means well the way she has gone about it is misguided.

In terms of Diane’s costuming her signature chain necklaces tell their own story:

The Good Wife 7.06 Diane Chain OneGoing for small and not so intimidating for the interviews and initial candidate discussion. Plus a huge chain link necklace would be too much with this amazing patterned jacket.

The Good Wife 7.06 Diane double chainPulling out the big guns when she goes to bat for Monica. This is the ultimate statement even if it doesn’t work.

The Good Wife 7.06 Diane Chain ThreeAnd finally this is halfway between; it’s not so big that it clashes with her jacket, but it is also more of statement piece than the first one.

While I’m on the subject of costuming here are Lucca’s best looks this week.

The Good Wife 7.06 Alicia, Lucca and JasonBest look also extends to facial expressions and Cush Jumbo gave great awkward face in this scene followed by a hilarious exit.

The Good Wife 7.06 Alicia and LuccaThis jacket is also a fabulous addition to her already amazing costume roll call. They’ve established what a good dresser and smart lawyer Lucca is and now I really want to learn more about who Lucca is; we need some backstory please.

The pieces are moving and the conflict is building; I think it is more than fine to declare that this isn’t just a fun hot streak, but The Good Wife is hitting those pre-season 6 levels.
