Variety Emmy Studio Conversations or Pick Your Dream Dinner Dates

16 Jun

You know the drill by now; it is Emmy discussion season and Variety has a whole host of conversations taking place between stars from your favorite shows. This series differs from roundtables because they are one on ones (and a two on two) with no moderator to ask the questions. What Variety delivers are the perfect bite size 10ish minute long chats focusing on the shows these actors are currently on as well as first jobs and other such general actor talking points. My list of dream dinner dates gets even longer with some of these pairings including the one below.

Allison Janney and Lizzy CaplanThis hug looks like the happiest place in the world.

Allison Janney and Lizzy Caplan light up the screen and they are of co-stars on Masters of Sex so the connection is already there. They discuss a range of topics including comedy in drama on Masters of Sex and finding laughter in the darkness on Mom. Caplan talks about her own personal experience with a storyline that devastated me last season and made this the second show that made me cry while writing a review (the first was The Good Wife and the recent third addition was Mad Men).

She also goes into some detail about how she wrote to the real Virginia Johnson before she passed away, which she never replied to and how Johnson “made it very clear that she didn’t want any involvement in it [Masters of Sex] whatsoever … I don’t think she read the script, it was more that she wrote this book, and that was her story, and then she wanted to just live out the rest of her life away from it all. Which I had to respect, but it drove me a bit crazy.”

Best of the 2015 Tony Awards Red Carpet

8 Jun

The Tony Awards red carpet was awash with color and print with some stunning frocks on display from nominees, presenters and attendees. Here are our favorites of the night.

Elisabeth MossElisabeth Moss is radiant in floral Oscar de la Renta wisely ditching the white belt from the original and adding extra color with her lipstick choice.

Vanessa HudgensThis is very much a summer awards show and Vanessa Hudgens is very on point in Naeem Khan with the gorgeous flower print and halter silhouette. Hudgens has been a pleasantly surprising sartorial force this year.

Patricia ClarksonRed roses for Patricia Clarkson in Alexander McQueen continuing the print theme and Clarkson is always a delight.

Emily SkeggsA dramatic and beautiful gown for Emily Skeggs with a hint of Carey Mulligan about her. And while Skeggs didn’t win in her category, it was a good night for Fun Home winning 5 awards.

Jennifer LopezJennifer Lopez delivers full elegant starry eyed drama in Valentino Couture.

Ruth WilsonMoving into the block color portion of the red carpet and I keep going back on forth on Ruth Wilson’s fuchsia Ralph Lauren frock. It’s the drop waist which is confusing matters and I’m still not over how much she made me like culottes last week. Very into the clashing lip color with the bold pink.

Annaleigh AshfordI adore Annaleigh Ashford as Betty in Masters of Sex and she won Best Featured Actress in a Play for You Can’t Take it With You (beating out my other fave Patricia Clarkson). Ashford stands out in a green Zac Posen frock with a dramatic bustier top and all important pockets.

Anna ChlumskySimple and chic from Anna Chlumsky in Sophie Theallet.

Bobby Cannavale and Rose ByrneHaving quite the Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale week after seeing Danny Collins and Spy. Byrne is a regular on TV Ate My Wardrobe and she tends to take a lot of red carpet risks including this amazing plunging crimson Delpozo dress with Cannavale looking dashing in Brooks Brothers.

Patina MillerPrevious Tony winner Patina Miller looks divine in Jason Wu showing how to red carpet flats and killing it with her accessory choices.

Judith LightYas Kween!

Best of the 2015 CFDA Fashion Awards Red Carpet

2 Jun

It is only Tuesday and this has already been a very busy week for the red carpet. Last night the Lincoln Center was awash with models, singers and actors wearing the creations of designers attending the annual CFDA Fashion Awards. As with the Met Gala this is a celebration of fashion and so the bar for creativity is set higher than your average red carpet; here are our favorite looks from the night.

Diane KrugerKicking things off with Diane Kruger shutting down the red carpet in a Prabal Gurung dress that resembles no other.

Janelle MonaeJanelle Monae showed some caped goodness switching out black and white H&M for white and gold Tadashi Shoji adding to her recent sartorial highs.

Gigi and ZacharyModel Gigi Hadid poses with a rather dapper Zachary Quinto and she has been dipped in the fashion equivalent of liquid gold in a stunning Michael Kors jumpsuit. There are nods to the decade which is currently dominating editorials and the runway and I am so all in on this 1970s revival.

Juliette LewisWearing this many white feathers is hard look to pull off and Juliette Lewis is winning me over with how much fun she is having in this Christian Siriano creation. The crop top factor helps it avoid looking bridal.

Karlie and DianeKarlie Kloss in plunging red polka dot DVF posing with Diane von Furstenberg in another strong pattern that is very on brand; both women look sensational.

Taraji P HensonTwo days in a row for Taraji P. Henson and off the back from winning Best Actress in a Drama at the Critics’ Choice Awards. This super sexy maroon Vera Wang Collection frock packs a huge ‘wow’ punch and shades of red are dominating TV Ate My Wardrobe’s picks from this event.

January JonesI’m on the fence about the overall look of January Jones in J. Mendel, which I think is down to the shape of the pants and my general complicated feelings about jumpsuits (which are well documented on this site). But she looks great and now I’m going to go cry some more about how we left Betty (never getting over it).

Joshua JacksonOh, hello.

Best of the 2015 Critics’ Choice Awards Red Carpet

1 Jun

TV Award season is here and to kick things off we have the Critics’ Choice Awards. Around March I get a little bit of red carpet fatigue after a long succession of award shows; now this has subsided and once again fancy frocks are what I crave. The Critics’ Choice is a fun one as it is neither full on nor is it as casual as a TCA press tour or PaleyFest.

You're the Worst Critics' ChoiceThey might have lost Best Comedy to Silicon Valley, but You’re the Worst takes home the best dressed cast award (there is no actual trophy) looking dapper as fuck. Kether Donohue goes full bombshell with Aya Cash opting for one of my favorite outfit choices in a stunning hunter green lady suit. Desmin Borges and Chris Geere scrub up rather well too and can season 2 get a premiere date, please?

Aya CashAnd because Aya Cash looks so great in this suit here is a solo shot.

Mae WhitmanA really fun studded Alice + Olivia dress for Mae Whitman which looks like either playing connect the dots with a map of the stars or a funky scientific diagram of a leaf. Either way, I love it.

Judy GreerJudy Greer carries off an awkward mid-length with aplomb in this beautiful blue print. Bonus red lipstick points at the ready.

Maggie GyllenhaalGoing full summer florals and looking stunning is Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Chelsea PerettiColor blocking in satin isn’t always easy to do, but Chelsea Peretti works it. The shoulder capping detail and additional color from the clutch equal a couple of prayer hands emojis.

Taraji P HensonTaraji P. Henson took home Best Drama Actress and while I am only 5 episodes into Empire, I am obsessed with all things Cookie. Also with Henson’s purple lip color.

Gina RodriguezMulti-textured is what I need for this much sheer to work and the bodice detail on Gina Rodriguez’s Reem Acra Couture is stunning.

Ivonne CollIt must run in the Jane the Virgin family as here is Ivonne Coll also looking super classy in a black gown.

Carrie BrownsteinPolka dot halter dress hits my sweet spot, but it is Carrie Brownstein’s gold tipped heels and red lipstick which I can’t get enough of.

Judith LightJudith Light, killing it as always.

Carrie CoonNo Best Supporting Actress for Carrie Coon (went to the equally deserving Lorraine Toussaint for OITNB); however she looks fantastic in burgundy.

Yvonne StrahovskiThere’s not much to Yvonne Strahovski column of cerulean blue, but this color is stunning on her and I am so ready to see her in wearing 60s attire in The Astronauts Wives Club.

Holly TaylorThe Americans won Best Drama (!) and Holly Taylor’s red rose infused Don O’Neill gown avoids leaning towards the overwhelming side thanks to the subtle cut outs.

Clea DuvallClea DuVall closes this red carpet (or rather blue carpet) in a green blazer and while this tips towards the too casual end of the scale this wins me over for lady suit and every 90s teen movie reasons.

Amazing Outfits Aplenty at the Variety Emmy Studio

31 Mar

Award season has only just wrapped up, but there is another coming in a few months time and the Emmy chatter hum is already starting. The red carpet is part of why I adore award season, the other is all the pre-gaming with endless roundtables and GoldDerby one-on-one interviews. The actual winners and ceremony is far down the list and this is reserved for mostly outrage at the omissions.

Variety host an annual Emmy studio and while they have favored panels in the past (and they might still go down this route) over the weekend a variety of comedy and drama stars from network, cable and streaming platforms interviewed each other. While these videos aren’t available to watch just yet – I will definitely be discussing/posting those when they do – we can see what everyone was wearing and it is safe to say they ladies are killing it.

Don, Claire, Lizzy, AllisonA Showtime foursome (although Allison Janney is there for Mom) with Don Cheadle, Claire Danes, Lizzy Caplan and Allison Janney. Claire Danes is wearing a fabulous check Erdem frock complete with the requisite pocketed goodness. Caplan’s lipstick game is strong with Janney’s glasses earn best accessory. And like most of the dudes at this thing Cheadle looks good, but in pretty standard attire.

Variety panel - Fred, Abbi, Ilana, CarrieThere is a lot of “Yas Kween!” about this photo from Abbi Jacobson’s floral and leather jacket combo, the crop top/necklace pairing Ilana Glazer has opted for and Carrie Brownstein’s pink lipstick and tuxedo jacket. You look fine too, Fred.

Maggie and LievReally excited to see Maggie Gyllenhaal taking part and talking The Honourable Woman as it was one of my favorite performances of last year. And Gyllenhaal is looking lovely in print with Liev Schreiber getting a whole lot of stripe sock points.

Jessica and TaylorI love how giddy Taylor Schilling looks next to Jessica Lange while her all black ensemble with leather pants is exudes cool.

Jane and ViolaMajor style and legend status at play here with Jane Fonda and Viola Davis; this is one chat I can’t wait to see.

Jeffrey Tambor and JLDAnd I really want to know what’s going on in this photo to make Jeffery Tambor look so concerned. Orange is a really great color on Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Director Variety chatThrilled there’s going to be an all women director’s discussion with Gail Mancuso, Jill Soloway, Lisa Cholodenko, Lesli Linka Glatter (director of Now and Then! Plus a whole lot of TV faves) and Michelle MacLaren. This will be another ‘soon as the video goes up I will post it on here’ situation. Ace floral and stripe top from Jill Soloway.

Uzo and Gina VarietyWell, this is just the best and there is so much joy to be had from Gina Rodriguez and Uzo Aduba taking a selfie together. Both women are in A+ dresses and that color on Aduba is everything.

Kerry Washington VarietyLove Kerry Washington in Giambattista Valli pattern clashing polka dot/floral frock and that she’s gone for a colorful pair of lace pumps.

Taraji and MindyAnother selfie and amazing outfit duo with Mindy Kaling and Taraji P. Henson. Vibrant yellow on Henson is stunning and Kaling’s matching skirt and top is super pretty.

Julianna MarguliesSticking to a designer favorite is Julianna Margulies in Narciso Rodriguez and this classic monochromatic take is really working for The Good Wife star.

Karen Gillan’s Winning Look at the 2015 Jameson Empire Awards

30 Mar

Still mourning the loss of Selfie and everything it was/could’ve been but taking a break from Sia karaoke sadness with Karen Gillan in a fabulous shimmery Louis Vuitton dress at the 2015 Jameson Empire Awards. Gillan took home the prize for Best Female Newcomer for her performances in Oculus and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Karen GillanFuturistic mod springs to mind and there’s a whole Jetsons 60s vibe going on. Now the dress is a big style hit and Karen Gillan’s red carpet record is excellent as she doesn’t always stick to what is safe.

Karen Gillan bootsSo what to make of the black boots? They add an edginess to the look and also falls into the whole mod element (picturing Sally Draper in her white go go boots), but an ankle bootie is what I’m leaning towards as an alternate. When Michelle Williams wore a very similar looking Louis Vuitton frock to the Met Gala it was criticized for being a bit too casual for the event; she paired it with black pumps and they looked fine but were nothing special. Like Williams, Gillan’s pixie cut was stunning and the wavy short bob is also doing wonders. Can someone find her a comedy that doesn’t get cut short before its time?

With the lights like this it looks like karaoke should be on the menu really:

Karen Gillan EmpireBonus Empire Awards red carpet yes with Hayley Atwell in a classic black dress and another TV plea to renew Agent Carter.

Hayley AtwellMuch appreciated and thanks in advance.

Watch Kerry Washington’s Powerful Speech at the GLAAD Media Awards

22 Mar

Kerry Washington received the Vanguard Award for supporting the LGBT community at the GLAAD Media Awards in LA last night with Ellen DeGeneres presenting her with this accolade; Washington was quick to note that she is part of the Scandal family through her wife Portia de Rossi. Wearing a purple and wine color-block Hellessy gown Washington was one of several Shondaland cast members who picked up an award with How to Get Away with Murder taking home Outstanding Drama.

Kerry Washington GLAADWashington gave a rousing acceptance speech – which you can watch below – showing how aware she is of her position starting off by saying “on Monday morning people are going to click a link* to hear what that woman from Scandal said at that award show and so I think some stuff needs to be said.” Kicking things off by getting to the heart of the matter with this idea that there are “limited seats at the table” for those categorized as ‘other’ and how they have been pitted against each other.

*waves*

The power of storytelling and how “we need more LGBT representation in the media” with lots of different kinds of LGBT people being shown on screen. She also makes sure she mentions jobs both in front of and behind the camera. This last point gets a standing ovation and at just over halfway through her speech it isn’t the only time this happens.

Marriage equality is something Washington feels passionately about and I can’t imagine she would be receiving this award if this wasn’t the case. Linking this idea of not being able to marry the one you love with laws, which in the past prevented marriage pertaining to race she states “We must be allies and we must be allies in this business as to be represented is to be humanized.”

Rounding off this incredible and inspiring speech because she knows how powerful her position is, she spoke of the idea that in the real world ‘Other’ is the norm and “In the real world the only norm is uniqueness and our media must reflect that.” Cue another standing O.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

27 Feb

The Independent Spirit Awards got lost in the Oscar red carpet crazy and because it is one of my favorite red carpet events – there is SO much color and pattern – most of this week’s “Out of the Box” is dedicated to this with a smattering of the post Oscars Vanity Fair party. February is a whirlwind of fancy pants dresses (sometimes literally), so I am glad to round off the month on a high of print and bold tones.

Aubrey PlazaAfter tearfully saying goodbye to TV Ate My Wardrobe style icon April Ludgate it is only right to start with Aubrey Plaza in floral Suno; even though Parks is over it is safe to say Plaza will be gracing these pages a whole bunch.

Jenny SlateI have strong feelings about Jenny Slate, Mary Katrantzou and the color yellow; together this is perfection. Related – I have spent the past few days saying “look like dis” all thanks to this amazing Kroll Show sketch.

Ava DuVernayCombining pockets, print and color for one exceptional ensemble is Ava DuVernay.

Gillian JacobsIt is a cute sundress palooza and Gillian Jacobs is an “Out of the Box” staple when it comes to outfits like this Preen frock and red pumps.

Cate BlanchettCate Blanchett is a style queen and she gets the laidback vibe spot in a heart fluttering Schiaparelli Couture.

Aja Naomi KingMore glorious yellow from How to Get Away with Murder’s Aja Naomi King with a dash of snakeskin pattern pumps. The big question is after ditching HTGAWM mid-season should I watch last night’s finale?

Julianne MooreOne reason I love the Independent Spirit Awards red carpet so much is it is the optimal point of fun and fancy; where dress length can be anything you want. And Julianne Moore’s Christian Dior Couture sparkly mini number ticks all the boxes.

David OyelowoEven the dudes get in on the colorful attire, although David Oyelowo showed at the Oscars it isn’t a onetime thing and while this baby blue suit is a little rumpled in places I am still swooning all over the place.

Emmy RossumWell this just delightful and Emmy Rossum in Oscar de la Renta has me wishing it was a little warmer right now (layers and layers of knits is what I have covered myself in today).

Rinko KikuchiI’m a little mad I didn’t get to this red carpet sooner because look how perfect all of these dresses are?! Another incredible floral beauty with Rinko Kikuchi in Chanel.

Rashida JonesA switch in party but not pattern joy with Rashida Jones at the post Oscars Vanity Fair shindig looking resplendent in Andrew Gn.

Mindy KalingDeviating from the color/pattern theme and Mindy Kaling wearing another incredible creation from Mindy Project costume designer Salvador Perez. Kaling is normally all about the bold and while this has neither color nor print it might be one of the boldest outfits she has worn. Simply stunning.

Elle Style Awards 2015

25 Feb

Okay so award season isn’t quite over as UK Elle held their annual Style Awards in London last night. You might think we have red carpet fatigue but thankfully there are plenty of spectacular and eyebrow raising outfits on display with pink tones ruling the night.

Diane Kruger ElleStarting with Diane Kruger in Chanel and this is another ensemble that falls into ‘magical fashion unicorn‘ territory as I’m not sure there is anyone else who could pull of this amount of multi-textured soft pink without looking like a bathroom accessory. Kruger won Best Actress and new co-star Bryan Cranston presented her with the award. I am still sad The Bridge got cancelled.

Rebel Wilson

Another winner on the night in both the awards and dress stakes; Rebel Wilson picked up the Rising Star accolade and this Eloquii frock is incredible in color and shape.

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Gwendoline ChristieThis is where things get a little more bonkers and Gwendoline Christie’s Giles ensemble is batshit but brilliant. Maggie Gyllenhaal looks delightful in salmon custom Roland Mouret while receiving the award for Best TV Actress and her portrayal of Nessa Stein on The Honourable Woman.

Laura JAcksonPresenter Laura Jackson is also pretty in pink (yeah I went there) and this is a beautiful dress.

RoksandaDesigner Roksanda Ilincic is a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite – you should have seen my super uncool reaction when I walked past her store at the weekend – and here she is showing off one of her many stunning color block designs.

Taylor SwiftMoving on from the pink beauties to a dress I’m still not sure about; the color is stunning and this Julian Macdonald dress is certainly a departure from the usual super girly frocks Taylor Swift favors. It might be the hair style or that this looks like something her BFF Karlie Kloss would wear that’s keeping me on the fence. Part of me hopes Swift had a conversation with Maggie Gyllenhaal about the scarf she may or may not have left at her house.

CaraCara Delevingne is letting the vampy black Morticia Addams elegant look work for her.

Sai BennettA smidge saloon for Sai Bennett however the Mr Selfridge star is pulling it off and shows how a fantastic haircut and red lip color can really boost an outfit up a few notches.

Oscar 2015 Red Carpet Highlights Part 2 – Classic (with a twist)

23 Feb

The Oscar red carpet rundown continues (Part 1 is here) and here are some stunning takes on classic black and white designs (with some blue thrown into the mix).

LupitaLast year Lupita Nyong’o dominated award season and became the red carpet queen. Even when she isn’t nominated she still makes a jaw dropping entrance in a Calvin Klein Collection pearl dress.

Meryl StreepMeryl Streep not only had one of the reactions of the night (see end of post) but this is quite possibly my favorite ever Meryl Oscar look (and there have been many) in custom Lanvin. The tuxedo jacket kicks it off and the rest is just as chic.

Margot RobbieThis is somehow both demure and super sexy. Plus Margot Robbie’s Saint Laurent manages to incorporate a sheer element that doesn’t make me sigh with sadness. Amazing crimson lip color bonus points.

Reese WitherspoonThe #AskHerMore campaign is something I am all for (yes I am aware this might sound contradictory while I write this roundup) and the Fug Girls (Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan) eloquently sum up how I feel about Reese Witherspoon not answering the ‘who are you wearing?’ standard Q “#askhermore is great, but it’s ALSO okay to ask/say who you’re wearing. You got it for free. It’s a transaction. Tip your server.” Reese, your Tom Ford dress is stunning as was your performance in Wild.

Sienna MillerA beautiful Oscar de la Renta gown for Sienna Miller with bow and sequin detail.

Cate BlanchettAs with Lupita, Cate Blanchett is a winner from last year doing the presenter version of a stunning gown. The Maison Margiela Couture dress by itself would veer towards classic but dull and it is the Tiffany & Co necklace that really lets this outfit sing.

Eddie RedmayneEddie Redmayne is adorable as seen here and when he won Best Actor. He also continues to wow with his suit choices and for the Oscars Redmayne wears Alexander McQueen, as does Hannah Bagshawe making this ‘His and Hers High Fashion.’ Plus there is only a slight hint of the Redmayne lean.

Leaving you with this while I catch up on sleep:
