One of the fashion industry’s biggest nights of the year took place at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City last night (Monday, 6 June) honoring designers at the CFDA Awards. The annual event celebrates the best in fashion design and there are a whole host of stars on hand to showcase their work.
Here are our favorite looks from the night and trends from the evening include all that sparkles, black and botanical prints.
For a full list of the winner head here.Beyoncé was awarded with the Style Icon Award crushing it in super sparkly Givenchy ladysuit (cue switching out lyrics to “Formation”) and wide-brimmed hat.
Aside from a recent Elle interview Beyoncé has let her music and Instagram do the speaking for her and this speech revealed a whole lot about her family’s influence on the clothes she wears and she had this special message to the designers in the room “I want to say thank you to every designer who works tirelessly to make people think they can write their own story.”
She also gave a detailed shout out to her family and threw in a Game of Thrones reference much to my delight.
“My mother and my uncle, God rest his soul, made all of our first costumes, individually sewing hundreds of crystals and pearls, putting so much passion and love into every small detail. When I wore these clothes I felt like Khaleesi. I had an extra suit of armor. It was so much deeper than any brand name.”I love everything about this photo of Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson presenting the Accessory Designer of the Year Award (which went to Paul Andrew) and they both look fabulous in black Rebecca Minkoff creations.
Jessica Chastain combining three of the trends of the evening (black, metallic, foliage) in a stunning leafy Prabal Gurung frock. Only minor quibbles; maybe needs a necklace and/or red lipstick.
Throwing some bold color into the mix with Gillian Jacobs in Tanya Taylor.
Samira Wiley is a big Milly fan and so it makes sense that she wears this designer to the CFDA Awards; what a fantastic frock this is. The feathered detail really makes this dress standout. Plus, pockets!
We’re entering the 70s influenced portion and Hari Nef works a hard to pull of ethereal Gucci number.
There’s something a little tarot card reader or fabulous 70s shindig about Zosia Mamet’s Maiyet look thanks to the red embellished scarf.
Giving off relaxed couple vibes are Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy both sporting a healthy post-Memorial Day weekend glow and Danes’ Calvin Klein Collection pleated dress is understated. Well, aside from the part that looks like a button that is screaming to be pushed.
Going back to the sparkly theme with Kirsten Dunst in Rodarte and while I wish the skirt was not so sheer, the top half of this dress and those fantastic shoes are enough to get passed this nitpick. Taking the floral trend to the next level by wearing real orchids as earrings.
In a surprisingly low-key look Tilda Swinton is still the ultimate cool as fuck red carpet star in Haider Ackermann sporting the black/silver trend with a flash of orange. Excellent lip color choice. UPDATE! Thanks to the Fug Girls (via Julie Klauser) it transpires that I already own the specific lip color Tilda is wearing; it’s Candy Yum Yum by MAC and it’s great.
Doing it for the dudes in metallics is Alexander Skarsgård in a really great Tom Ford tux.
Oh, hello. Sebastian Stan is giving off so much charm in Todd Snyder that I don’t even care he has gone sans socks.
