Talking New Perspectives at The Affair PaleyFest Panel

15 Oct

The Affair is not what you would describe as a light show, but there were plenty of laughs to be had at the PaleyFest New York panel this week. Showrunner Sarah Treem and the cast discussed the new season including how adding Helen and Cole’s points of view has expanded the world of the show by offering up four different takes of the overarching story. The general conceit is touched upon with the idea that there is no one ‘true truth’ being offered up and instead we are now getting four different versions of one affair and its impact.

Plus find out which actor gets the most shit in real life about their character (spoiler alert – it is Dominic West).

PaleyFest The AffairThe new POVs mean we get to move beyond the central love story and Dominic West mentions how in the first season Noah and Alison were falling in love and so generally they were on the same page. With Helen and Cole their feelings toward this relationship come from a place of betrayal and so their versions are in contrast; sometimes wildly so as we saw in the mediation and when Cole returns some of Alison’s things. It is no longer a case of spot the difference with clothes, hair style and tone, but a completely different take on an experience.

These extreme differences worked better for me in the second episode in the Cole/Alison encounter because there was a lot of wish fulfillment from Cole’s view; it was all about reconciling this relationship ending in a cordial manner and accepting that it is over. For Alison, Cole is menacing and a bit of a dick; this justifies her decision to leave. The box (which I’m guessing belonged to their child) is absent in Cole’s story and his day was already pretty bleak without this reminder.

Degrees of favorability come up and how generally the best version of a character is in their own story. This isn’t always the case with Joshua Jackson pointing out Cole’s day involves cocaine, drink driving and an aggressive run in with his brother. He also mentions a random blow job, but this scene didn’t make it into the second episode and this is one of the many jovial moments from the panel. While I don’t need The Affair to become all laughs all the time, it would be good if they could inject a sprinkling of the humor as this is a group of actors who have really great chemistry off screen as well as on. From this panel I know I need some more scenes between Cole and Helen; evidence in the photos below.

The Affair PaleyAnd here’s another because this panel really is delightful (plus I am weak when it comes to Joshua Jackson in a sweater).

The Affair PaleyFest panelThe Affair is a show that I find really interesting and infuriating at times in part because of the narrative structure and the storytelling device. This season is already more in the interesting column over infuriating as a result of the new perspectives and giving Maura Tierney and Joshua Jackson more to do. Ruth Wilson also points out that Alison’s sadness has been dialed back a bit this year (“for you guys as much as me”) and while some of the standout scenes dealt with Alison’s all consuming grief, this is a welcome move.

Prior to this discussion the PaleyFest audience have just watched the third episode (airing Sunday 18) so there are a couple of ‘huh?’ moments in what they are referencing, but nothing particularly spoilery. Dominic West discusses the challenges of underwater acting so I will be keeping an eye out on his facial expressions during that scene.

At the end the cast are asked which of the other characters they have previously played would they like to see spend a day in The Affair universe and both Ruth Wilson and Maura Tierney come up with funny answers. But I don’t want to spoil it so just watch the panel here for that and enjoy the rest of this lighthearted affair (I will see myself out).

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

14 Oct

The returning shows keep on coming and so do the cast reunions on this week’s “Behind the Insta-Scenes.” Plus costume treats galore and other on-set antics.

Jane the Virgin is back (!) and this lady will be guest starring soon (!). It is all the better knowing Rogelio will be involved somehow.

And now a message of love from the Jane the Virgin cast.

Viewing party treats and this cast is all over Instagram for your Jane fix.

Petra’s getting pregnant cons list is long and includes maternity clothes, but now I want to see what costume designer Rachel Sage Kunin would stir up in this department. Meanwhile here is a regular costume fitting (this dress is fabulous) and Entertainment Weekly has more behind the scenes snaps courtesy of Yael Grobglas.

Game of Thrones costume sneak peeks courtesy of Emilia Clarke. And for a moment I thought Daenerys was going to be rocking a knit beanie this season (not really, but the wig net does look like winter head wear).

Look who else is in Spain. Possibly a coincidence, probably shooting Game of Thrones (as well as selfies).

Oh hey Team Marvel (on Netflix) at New York Comic-Con.

And this one.

More Buffy treats from Sarah Michelle Gellar with this take on National Angel Food Cake Day. Yep that is a day apparently and I like this version better.

Production has started on season 4 of The Americans and Holly Taylor shared this spy like shot of the first table read (she also posted a clearer look at the table read set up on Twitter).

For us The Leftovers has only just started, for the actors they just finished filming the finale. Will we find out the backstory of the wedding dress gardening woman? And how she manages to keep it so clean while doing a task like this.

Digging Sherlock’s stripes and less than a month until Elementary is back.

Gabby Sidibe’s caption just made me laugh a whole lot.

It kinda looks like Taraji P. Henson and Jussie Smollett are reacting to Gabby’s previous photo. Instead they were watching Empire and this really could be in reference to any number of scenes.

A treasure trove of patterned and colorful garments for Mindy Kaling to try on for a Mindy Project fitting. My eyes are instantly drawn to the starry number.

New Town, New Wardrobe for Nora on The Leftovers

13 Oct

When somebody joins the Guilty Remnant on The Leftovers they must leave the trappings of their old life behind including the clothes they used to wear. Nora’s change of costuming and the way she wears her hair when they move from Mapleton to Miracle (or rather Jarden, Texas)is less dramatic, but noticeable nonetheless.

In season one the most memorable item from Nora’s wardrobe is her denim jacket because it is the boldest color she wears; everything else is in the neutral wheelhouse with plenty of grey, navy, beige and black. In fact her Mapleton costuming is pretty similar to Kevin’s in that he doesn’t tend to stray from this color palette either – throw in some white tees for Kevin – and their instant connection can been seen on both a surface and deeper level. Cut to Miracle and the change is apparent; Nora’s suddenly wearing a whole lot of red and pink and Kevin is still in the same tees and undone button down shirts.

The Leftovers 2.02 Nora and KevinKevin and Nora haven’t taken the traditional route toward moving in together and it is what you might call rushed. Before they had even been on a date Nora suggested they take a trip together and this idea of getting away from the town which holds so many bad memories was planted long before Kevin’s dad recommended the same course of action. Kevin also warned Nora before their first date that he is pretty fucked up and these two have been very forthcoming in the secrets they share. The fantastic confession scene at the start of this week’s episode “A Matter of Geography” is indicative of why the Kevin and Nora relationship works; even after they’ve revealed the parts they are ashamed of they still want to make a go of it.

Or rather it shows how Nora and Kevin are fundamentally different as he thinks his secret will be the bomb that blows this whole thing up and she sees it as a sign they can be okay. Kevin repeatedly hits the self-destruct button throughout this episode beyond this confession scene; he digs up Patti’s body and then purposefully gets pulled over by state police and then he reacts in rage to the state of the new house. Full disclosure is not an easy prospect even for the most transparent of relationships; Kevin’s secret is far bigger, but we don’t know how much Nora has told Kevin about the theory the MIT researchers have about why some people disappeared and that it might happen again.

Jill gets it and it is a matter of feeling safe which is why Nora has gone all in on this property and place. For Kevin, Miracle is no different from Mapleton as his demons have followed him here. And by demons I mean Patti and her presence is just as strong. Secrets can eat away at you and this one is doing just that and his spiraling takes him to an almost deadly place when he wakes up half drowned in a body of water that is no longer there with a cinder block tided to his ankle. Patti is there to keep him company much to his dismay.

He has told Nora so much, but this secret is just too big and I think he is probably scared what might happen if he reveals this humdinger. There is a certain element of denial he can maintain if he keeps it to himself and yet headphones and loud music can only drown out so much. The season 2 artwork puts the focus on this couple and actually points in part to Kevin’s new ankle accessory; he is reaching for Nora and there is a push/pull between his mystical darkness and her new found optimism. From what we have seen in the way of Nora’s reactions to Kevin’s secrets I think she will be able to handle this and the more he tries to deal with it alone, the worse it will get for everyone involved.

The Leftovers 2.02 KevinAll the trappings of Kevin’s old life are still there; the restlessness, secrecy and look of panic etched across his face. Nora does bring out some calm and this union could be soothing if he would only tell her what the fuck is going on.

They’ve made a pretty big commitment to each other and the child they have adopted, but even that was not smooth sailing thanks to a broken washing machine. Kevin doesn’t have much luck with household appliances this week. But they look pretty complementary costuming wise in their appointment and they are both emphatic about their relationship status. Yes, Nora sounded far more convincing.

Also this baby is the most adorable.

The Leftovers 2.02 Nora, Kevin and LilyNora has worn her hair straight for pretty much the entire run, all with the exception of the pre-departure episode “The Garveys At Their Best.”

The Leftovers 1.09 NoraSo it is significant that she has returned to this look when moving to a new town where they don’t know what happened to her family and now she has a new one.

The Leftovers 2.02 pieBetween the waves and the injection of red and pink tones into her costuming Nora’s look has been softened and moves away from her business wear styling from season 1. She is embracing motherhood and there is added femininity to her attire. Especially when she is holding both Lily and a freshly baked pie.

The Leftovers 2.02 Kevin, Nora, Jill and LilyNora isn’t all floaty skirts and dresses and it is worth noting there is some mirroring of Jill in the scene above wearing a vest (red once again) and jeans. Carrie Coon discussed Nora’s relationship with Jill in this wonderful Vox interview mentioning how Nora “wants to be cool! She wants to be the best pal” and this is evident here. Jill has moved from the dreaded annoying teen position to someone I want to spend more time with and part of this is down to dialing down her antagonism levels.

There is now a certain kinship between Jill and Nora; instead of eye rolling her way through her dad and Nora’s confessions Jill instead cracked a joke showing acceptance. The chemistry between these three actors is excellent and there is a strong sense of salvation in this second chance. Potential issues could occur down the road, but at this point Jill has Nora’s back because Jill knows what a good thing her dad has got despite the peeling wallpaper and lack of lights. So Kevin, please don’t fuck this up.

One item I hope Nora has brought with her to Miracle is her perfect hat for spying and head protection is vital in a hotter climate.

The Leftovers 2.02 Nora hatShopping montages and throwing out old clothes were absent so everything we see Nora wearing in Miracle could have been in the suitcases she already had packed ready for her escape. Plus there are items such as her denim jacket and penchant for wearing necklaces that have made the transition.

This isn’t Nora removing herself completely from her old life, instead this style change is indicative of a new location and embracing the family she is now part of. For Kevin despite the changes that have taken place there is still this firm grip he can’t shake so items such as his aviators and Apple earbuds are a vital shield. Plus those glasses do look really good.

The Leftovers 2.02 Kevin aviatorsFor the Guilty Remnant the white uniform is their way of shedding any kind of connection to their past and any form of personal identity. Nora’s costuming/hair evolution points back to the past as well as welcoming her present; it is why she is so desperate to get away from the town that took her first family to a place where there were no departures. Red is a powerful color and adds weight to the idea that Nora is the heart of this family unit while also showing the gulf which grows as a result of Kevin’s big dark secret.

Jill’s words to her father are worth repeating “Please don’t fuck this up.” Even if we know he’s gonna.

Having a Choice on The Good Wife

12 Oct

One of the major issues with last season of The Good Wife was that it stopped being fun when it got bogged down in the State’s Attorney election race; Alicia in court is fun and when she was running those courtroom scenes disappeared. Yes there were still cases, but even as this show enters its seventh season there is still something exhilarating about Alicia going up against it in court. Far more so than seeing her in a debate on television (or in the kitchen).

The Good Wife has for want of better phrase ‘gone back to basics’ and while there is a danger of covering old territory this all feels incredibly fresh because of Alicia’s time away from court last season. Her resources are few and yet she has still managed to find a team who are quick thinking and quick to adapt, but there are many obstacles including the task of finding a new investigator.

Ah yes, a new investigator is needed and for some reason everyone on this show has forgotten that Robyn was ever a thing. Don’t worry I have not forgotten you or your amazing sweater collection, Robyn. Kalinda gets a mention and Alicia goes for the investigator who reminds her of her former BFF; I’m guessing it was the leather part of her wardrobe that gave her these feelings because Amanda is no Kalinda and she is swiftly fired when she fucks up for a second time. Enter Grace’s first choice and guest star Jeffrey Dean Morgan giving super flirty vibes as Jason Crouse. And I’m already sensing that things are going to get complicated in this department especially as Jason was offered far more money from Lockhart/Agos; new love interest ahoy. Finding it hard to get excited about new romantic entanglements as I still feel burned by the Finn Polmar of it all.

The Good Wife 7.02 AliciaLast week Alicia turned down Canning’s offer of a job because she doesn’t want to answer to anyone. This is of course a pipe dream as in the legal world there is always someone to answer to, but she wants as much control of her work environment as she can exert. This means taking cases she knows Canning has pushed in her direction is fine as the influence is kept at arm’s length. Choice or lack thereof runs throughout “Innocents” from Alicia’s case to everything that is going on with Peter’s campaign. Alicia knows Eli is using her, but because she is aware of his intentions she plays along even if he tried to manipulate her. This is the big difference between Alicia now and the one we met back in season one; she is now so much more equipped to deal with the intricate plotting of those around her. She is fine with Eli doing this because she wants Eli on her team.

Loyalty is vital in Eli achieving his goal so when Ruth asks Nora to spy on Eli for her it was clear Nora would tell Eli what she has been tasked with. For all her expertise, Ruth sure is getting played and as this battle between Eli and Ruth starts to heat up I am rubbing my hands with glee at the thought of Margo Martindale and Alan Cumming going up against each other.

Eli essentially tells Alicia to do what he has done with Peter and while Alicia is fine with being used by Eli in this manner – her response to Peter when he points out she is being used “I know. Who isn’t?” is telling – I don’t think she will be so thrilled when Eli exerts his second half of his revenge plan.

Alicia has to swallow her pride with Frank and the DNC to help with her “pathway to rehabilitation” and then she will able to screw Frank over in the future. In the meantime she has to play along including being told which way to vote and the smell hypocrisy is strong. There are some things she does not disclose to Eli and this compromised position is one of them.

The Good Wife 7.02 DianeWork is giving Alicia the freedom she craves and none of the bureaucratic BS Cary is dealing with over at Lockhart, Agos. Cary goes up against Howard in a way to show the younger associates that he is the guy they can turn to and it is about time for Howard as a plot device to go. He is not going quietly and he has plenty of friends in high places including a judge who moves up one of Cary’s cases by a month. Cary has an ace in his pocket and knows the best way to get Diane to listen to his concerns is to disrupt something that is important to her; Howard interrupts her EMILY’s List meeting and it goes exactly how Cary imagined. Howard offers the “easiest ultimatum” when he tells Diane and David Lee that either Cary goes or he does. Only one of them has their name on the door.

The connective tissue between the goings on at Lockhart, Agos and with Alicia is slight; Alicia rings Cary about investigators and inadvertently gives him a few leads. There are the inevitable cases against each other and I’m hoping this is one area that isn’t going to become a drag. The Good Wife 7.02 NancyAlicia went up against an old foe this week and one who pretends she only vaguely knows who Alicia is. Oh Nancy, I do enjoy when you come to play. Mamie Gummer makes a welcome return as the all too earnest and innocent Nancy Crozier in a case which explores the world of copyright, art and consent. The guest stars keep coming with Amy Irving (oh hey Emily Sloane!) playing an artist who took photographs of her naked children when they were 8 and 10 with Johnny Simmons as the now grown up son Erik. Erik is so unhappy with the new exhibition featuring his image that he took a hammer to one of them. This is how he crosses paths with Alicia in bond court and because Lucca Quinn gave Alicia the case she comes on board as co-counsel.

Once again Quinn shows she is quick thinking and hopefully we are edging toward Alicia offering her a position at her startup firm; especially as they won quite a large amount of money this week. In classic Good Wife fashion after exhausting all options they came up with a winning solution and even helped mother and son reconcile. In the same way I feel burned by the whole Finn Polmar business, this show has also never been particularly consistent with Alicia having any female friends. I want Lucca Quinn to be the exception to this rule, but I am also not counting on it. The chemistry between Cush Jumbo and Julianna Margulies is pretty great and they feel like equals. Plus Quinn is upping the style stakes with her penchant for color and pattern. A quick fashion parade.

The Good Wife 7.02 Lucca The Good Wife 7.02 Alicia and Quinn The Good Wife 7.02 Alicia and LuccaAnother character who has been given a wardrobe upgrade is Grace and she made the transition from the annoying teen bracket to rare teen that isn’t there just to antagonize. Plus she inadvertently provides a helpful solution to the case. And Alicia you really should be paying her and not just in awesome blouses.

The Good Wife 7.02 GraceOne more sartorial pick from “Innocents” and Diane is embracing the longer jacket for the second week in a row; this one is even more spectacular than the jacquard approach from the last episode.

The Good Wife 7.02 Diane and CaryGeometric color blocking perfection.

Alicia might be at the bottom of the legal ladder and yet this is the happiest she has been for a long time. The knowledge she now possesses about her work and the political world she is entrenched in has made her far savvier about how much choice she has. This doesn’t mean she is impervious to the manipulative tactics being employed by those around her and there is still plenty to learn – the Kings love to talk about how each season is part of the education of Alicia Florrick – but she appears to be in a strong position and there is a sense of freedom which was missing last year.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

9 Oct

Fall TV premieres and the red carpets that accompany them continue this week with American Horror Story: Hotel and The Leftovers. Plus film festivals in New York and London and Paris Fashion Week are keeping the style levels high.

Rose LeslieAt the BFI Luminous Fundraising Gala this week Rose Leslie does floral print in exquisite fashion wearing Erdem. Plus those all important pockets that another Game of Thrones star is a big fan of.

Jenna ColemanAn ideal gown for a fancy event in fall and Jenna Coleman’s pink and gold Lanvin is equal parts delicate and intricate.

Kiernan ShipkaKiernan Shipka wears Valentino at the Paris Fashion Week Valentino show and the mixture of floral pleats and lace is delightful.

Angela BassettAngela Bassett is one of the reasons I will probably end up watching at least half of American Horror Story: Hotel this season and she stuns on the red carpet in a Theia vegan leather LBD and funky embellished sandals.

Sarah PaulsonGetting futuristic vibes from Sarah Paulson’s super sleek black metallic Monique Lhuillier frock and it is another really good recent red carpet choice from Paulson.

Carey MulliganA stunning all-Chanel ensemble for Carey Mulligan’s in a gold floral sweater and lacy culottes. Yep those are culottes and not a skirt as I first thought it was. Even with that knowledge and my slight distrust of this garment it doesn’t change my mind about this winning look for the Suffragette photocall at the London Film Festival.

Greta GerwigBeige becomes interesting with Roksanda color blocking (even the shoes aren’t bothering me) and Great Gerwig’s red up do is the extra pow to this already powerful look at the Maggie’s Plan New York Film Festival premiere.

Liv Tyler and Margaret QualleyIn this week’s Behind the Insta-Scenes I mentioned that Liv Tyler and Margaret Qualley could easily play mother and daughter; this shot of them at the premiere for The Leftovers means I can double down on this suggestion. Margaret Qualley is pulling perfect side eye posing while Tyler smiles wide giving me plenty of ideas for what direction this yet to be written drama can go in.

IMG_2176Diane Kruger’s Violet Grey profile is full of stunning shots of her on the Paramount lot playing the part of a classic movie star in the vein of Grace Kelly and it was hard to narrow it down to just one. In the end I opted for the photo of Kruger wearing a Michael Kors sweater and Olympia Le-Tan stripe shorts which highlights her casual cool and beauty; this could easily be part of a Chanel campaign. The accompanying Q&A shows off Kruger’s wit and honesty – how often do actresses talk about having a hangover – and she is also someone who can get away with referring to her boyfriend as her “lover.”

Felicity Covers the Entertainment Weekly Reunion Issue

8 Oct

Are you Team Ben or Team Noel?

The hashtag allegiance signifiers popped up all over Twitter after the unveiling of the new Entertainment Weekly reunion issue featuring the love triangle at the heart of Felicity. I didn’t watch Felicity when it first aired, but this show has been the focus of our TV Rewind series and discussion posts that started two years ago on This Was TV. There was definitely a yelp of happiness when this cover photo first popped up in my feed yesterday.

FelicityGood, right?! The hand placement alone has me all a fluster.

Back when I first started watching Felicity I discussed the notion of love triangles before Twitter and so it was fun to see a hint of what social media would have looked like if it had been around when the show first aired. My timeline is obviously just a small sampling, but it was fairly split down the middle between the Ben and Noel fans. The AV Club’s Carrie Raisler summed it up rather well “Guys don’t let #TeamBen and #TeamNoel tear us apart. We can all be #TeamScotts.”

The trio appeared in a pre-taped video this morning on The Today Show (updated to include the interview) with Keri Russell calling Felicity a “good sweet story” and Entertainment Weekly has released another fun shot and an interview excerpt from the issue.

So many feelings. Also these pajamas are super cute.

ew-felicityNice Dean & DeLuca mug props too.

For more from the reunion issue head here and it will be on newsstands tomorrow (October 9). And for all of your episode by episode Felicity chat needs head to our TV Team-Up section.

The Wish List: Carol’s Red and White Pattern Clashing Delight on The Last Man on Earth

6 Oct

If you had free rein to grab whatever clothes had been left in abandoned stores then the Carol from The Last Man on Earth approach could be a winner; opting for a full on pattern clashing theme.

Last Man on Earth is something I have returned to after ditching it early into its first year thanks to getting tired pretty quickly of some of Phil’s less than appealing characteristics. It turns out I tuned out way to early and I maybe need to give those earlier episodes another chance.

Before we get to the Wish List items I quickly want to point out the bedazzled masterpiece that is the t-shirt which played a role in Carol getting left behind.

From a few sparkles:

Last Man on Earth 2.01To all the sparkles:

Last Man on Earth 2.02That’s a whole lot of gluing Carol has been doing to occupy her time while she waits for Phil to return.

Phil didn’t give Carol a heads up or choice about the trip to Malibu and so Carol’s ensemble is not what you might call ‘beach ready’ but it totally works as a fun road trip outfit.

The Last Man on Earth 2.02Carol is wearing a Vionnet wave print jersey tee and it is giving me chess piece vibes with a dash of Grecian pottery imagery.

VionettThe pants are Max Mara and look super comfy; hence the rather apt ‘Weekend’ moniker and these ones are the ‘Nuccia’ print. Sadly they are not currently available and are also a tad on the splurge end of the scale.

Weekend Max Mara pantsMy go to brand for comfy pants which you can wear outside is Uniqlo and these really won’t break the bank. In fact you may suddenly find you have a drawer full of these pants if you are anything like me (I can’t go into Uniqlo and not come out with at least one new pair).

UniqloAnd if you are wondering Phil’s tee is from Threadless.

Can Alicia Florrick be Her Own Boss on The Good Wife?

5 Oct

Last season of The Good Wife ended on a rather sour note both for viewers and Alicia Florrick alike as she had to step down from her newly elected position as a result of fraud charges and we had to endure a farewell scene tainted with behind the scenes rumors and green screen phoniness. Season 6 was a huge step down from the triumphant and exhilarating year that came before it and the election plot was a disappointment on the whole; subsequently anticipation levels for this new season are far lower than this time last year. The Good Wife likes to reset itself each season through campaigns and shifting power dynamics with various degrees of success and “Bond” is no different.

Alicia is once again placed at the bottom of the lawyer ladder and this first episode back is really encouraging in how they are not just playing with Alicia’s journey, but with some of the supporting characters too. I should emphasize the ‘some’ of that sentiment as there are still the same issues when it comes to incorporating all of the supporting characters with the Lockhart Agos crew getting a much shorter shrift of things. But let’s focus on the positives first as “Bond” allows Alicia to grow as well as understand her role in the wider picture.

The Good Wife 7.01 Alicia FlorrickAfter the SA controversy she can’t get a job except she can, but the one person offering her a position is someone she considers to be ‘the devil.’ Louis Canning has always been after Alicia to join his firm and the more she resists, the more he comes after her. Alicia is fed up of answering to someone and this was part of the reason why she originally left Lockhart/Gardner (#neverforget) to start her own firm with Cary. In the political and legal sphere there is always someone to answer to and what Alicia has been figuring out from the pilot to now is the different degrees of compromise. Public perception plays a big role and she has gone from the victim of one story to potential victim in another – depending on how much people believe the ‘she was duped by her advisers’ angle. Regardless there is an element of naivety and Alicia has to rebuild her image or rehabilitate depending on what role she is playing.

It is all about working those angles so while Alicia is still refusing Canning’s main offer of coming to work for him she is not against taking work from him. In this latter scenario there is the air of independence even if she ultimately knows there is someone pulling the strings, but there always is no matter how much Alicia wants to believe she is answering to no one.

The same can be said for Peter’s campaign and as soon as Alicia gives the word Eli steps into campaign gear, but he ends up approaching the person who will get his job. That person is Ruth Eastman; played by Margo Martindale and I am thrilled she has joined the ever growing list of amazing Good Wife guest stars, especially as her arc is as Eli’s antagonist. Ruth doesn’t quite know what she is going up against with Alicia and this is one scenario where Alicia is comfortable in controlling the level of access she will give. Eli knows this and after a period of wallowing while watching bad Nazi zombie movies he gets a makeover and reveals his dastardly plan to use Alicia to impact Peter’s campaign.

Eli’s wallowing and subsequent rejuvenation in picture form:

The Good Wife 7.01 snow zombies The Good Wife 7.01 Eli makeoverIt really is a great haircut.

So is Eli really going to fuck over Alicia to politically point score? This is where things get complicated as Eli really does care for Alicia even if he can’t quite define what their relationship is; however I also think he feels so betrayed by Peter that he is willing to fuck her over in a way that won’t hurt her, but will impact Peter. Eli knows the whole inner workings of the Florrick marriage and so I think he thinks Alicia won’t object to this plan. He also knows she will be mad as hell if she finds out she is a pawn in his revenge plan. And she will find out.

Alicia is currently a one woman law firm working from home with Grace as her assistant. That is one way to cut down on costs. In an attempt to supplement her finances Alicia is working in bond court or at least attempting to as the judge keeps freezing her out because he thinks she is going to waste his time and Marie Antoinette all over the place. Luckily for Alicia she gets a helping hand from fellow bond lawyer Lucca Quinn who after a couple of gossipy quips sees the value and resilience that makes Alicia Florrick the character to route for. Ladies helping ladies is my sweet spot and so when Alicia stands in for Quinn at bond court, Quinn does her a solid by doing the same in Alicia’s probate hearing. Luckily for Alicia, Quinn is pretty quick thinking and knows her shit. Is this the new lady friendship this show needs?

All signs point to yes and yet I am wary of whether this will be the case as we have been burned in the past. And the show is definitely trolling the audience with this moment.

The Good Wife 7.01 bar sceneQuinn is a likable presence even if they threw in the random bit of off screen dancing fury at the end and she also has a fun sense of pattern clashing style which differs greatly from Alicia’s own more conservative court room attire. I am of course a sucker for a polka dot, but it is Cush Jumbo’s energy as Quinn that I am drawn to. It all sounds so sad and yet Alicia really does need a friend with no ulterior motives.

A couple of relationships took a beating last season including the manufactured argument between Alicia and her partners Diane and Cary. The former is still strained; the latter didn’t make an appearance as Cary is languishing between the olds he has to spend time with and the younger associates who he longs to be cool with. Oh, Cary. I hope they can find a better storyline for you. Meanwhile Diane wore one of the most Diane jackets and it is fabulous.

The Good Wife 7.01 DianeA lot has changed on The Good Wife but a lot has also stayed the same; the Diane/Alicia relationship is a difficult one as there is always something that comes between them. All I want is more martini drinking time and planning to take on the world together. Maybe one day, first they have to work through their feelings of work betrayal with standoffish and awkward conversations.

In Diane style news she also wore this fabulous Proenza Schouler stripe jacket (also worn by Olivia Pope) which she made her own by adding a brooch. This is a good tip for personalizing any item of clothing.

The Good Wife 7.01 Diane and David LeeRed is Alicia’s power color and it has been used in season openers in the past to signify a bold change (see post Will hookup in season 3 *sob*). After failing spectacularly at bond court in a safe black suit, Alicia steps up her game by wearing her signature shade. While this doesn’t win her any favors from the judge, she does make a friend in Quinn. The red jacket can work in many ways.

The Good Wife 7.01 Alicia and LuccaOverall “Bond” is a good start to the new season and while it doesn’t wash away the memories of all the missteps last year it seems poised to take Alicia on an interesting path in what might be the final season (nothing has been confirmed as of yet but there are strong hints this is the case). Alicia is in a similar position job wise as when we first met her – at the bottom – but she has seven years more experience in the legal and political arenas. I am excited to see how she navigates these worlds while trying to stay as independent as she can from all the external influences and if such a thing is possible on The Good Wife.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

2 Oct

A Shondaland celebration, thematic dresses, patterns for fall and more magazine cover/interview delights from Bust in this week’s “Out of the Box.”

Viola DavisKeeping it classic at the Entertainment Weekly party celebrating #TGIT is Viola Davis fresh off that Emmy win. Great lipstick, bracelets and metallic sandals elevate the LBD look. After quitting How to Get Away with Murder mid first season I have returned to the fold and the season 2 premiere did a good job of sucking me back in to all the drama, even if I still can’t remember the names of over half the characters.

Jerrika Hinton, Caterina Scorsone, and Kelly McCrearyGrey’s Anatomy trio all sporting fun looks ticking #ladysuitwatch2015 and cute Peter Pan collar dress boxes. Jerrika Hinton’s high neck lace blouse, t-bar shoes and bold lip color gives her the edge over co-stars Caterina Scorsone and Kelly McCreary, but all three are very welcome additions.

Camilla LuddingtonA precarious #ladysuitwatch2015 from Camilla Luddington and one that probably requires quite a lot of tape, but hey if you can do the suit no shirt thing then go for it as Luddington has.

Kate MaraThere are some projects where it is much easier to work the theme into a red carpet outfit and Kate Mara has done just this at the New York Film Festival premiere for The Martian. This Valentino frock is on the nose of course for this particular film, but the whimsy wins out.

Kristen WiigAlso from the NYFF Martian premiere is Kristen Wiig in Oscar de la Renta. The floral bodice is a slightly awkward design and yet the romantic nature of this gown/non-fussy styling – yes even those beige strappy sandals – makes this a style triumph for Wiig.

Diane KrugerDiane Kruger’s showing how to do in bloom patterns for fall in Preen at the Fashion 4 Development’s 5th annual Official First Ladies luncheon. As this is a daytime event the ankle boots are ideal for giving off a more casual edge and the Mark Cross box bag (which I really want) sells ‘I have some important shit to say’ as Kruger was a guest speaker at this event. Perfect for keeping those flash cards safe.

Another fantastic book tour outfit from Mindy Kaling wearing a TV Ate My Wardrobe designer fave in Roksanda. I devoured Why Not Me? in a couple of sittings and there are some great chapters on personal style, but it is Mindy’s White House dating story that is my personal standout chapter as it encapsulates everything from work, confidence and the rom-com tone which is at the heart of The Mindy Project.

Aidy BryantBust continues to kill it with their choice of cover star with SNL’s Aidy Bryant following on from Jenny Slate and it is a profile which covers a lot of the standard ground – career, love life, school – but in way which feels like we are learning more than surface level BS. When discussing the shows she has been on (SNLBroad CityGirls) she mentions her positive experiences “It’s very cool that their costume departments have been totally accommodating. And guess what? They should be.”

This isn’t always the case when it comes to big magazine shoots with the rest of the cast as “They’ll have two dress options for me and they’ll have 20 for Kate, Vanessa, Cecily and Sasheer. Those are the only times where I’m like, ‘This is wrong. I manage to dress myself in a cool way. A professional stylist could have figured it out.'” Get better at this other magazines; I love the Peter Pan collar ASOS Curve dress from this cover shot.
