Best of the 2015 BET Awards Red Carpet

29 Jun

A few weeks have gone by since the last red carpet awards coverage on TV Ate My Wardrobe and now it is the turn of the 2015 BET Awards delivering some dramatic looks. Pattern and bold color have been switched out for black, white, cutouts and sparkle as the big trends of the night.

Janelle MonaeAnother incredible cape for Janelle Monae adding to her Met Gala and CFDA Awards triumphant sartorial moments; this is one signature look I’m not getting bored of.

Gabrielle UnionGabrielle Union is smoking hot in a glitzy sequin Halston Heritage halter neck frock.

Laverne CoxOn the red carpet Laverne Cox wore a funky Dmitry Sholokhov tuxedo inspired jumpsuit; however it is her second outfit of the evening that really stands out. The super sexy custom Michael Costello white frock includes a daring slit, cutouts and the slightly pointed shoulders adds to the drama levels. Gabrielle Union appeared on stage with Cox wearing the same dress and also looked pretty amazing.

Tracee Ellis RossBET Awards co-host Tracee Ellis Ross is serving up simple chic in an all white ensemble with a whole lot of incredible accessorizing. Love the purple lipstick.

Zendaya ColemanYes this is pretty much a sparkly shirt and yet Zendaya Coleman is completely pulling off this Nicolas Jebran outfit delivering a whole lot of leg envy on the side. Paired with stacked silver Roberto Cavalli platforms and a bangs heavy pixie cut give an edge to the styling.

Michael B. JordanLooking sharp as ever and Michael B. Jordan never fails to impress with his suit color choices. Bring on the Fantastic Four press tour.

SerayahGoing beyond the sheer trend in matching monochrome House of Li Jon chain skirt and top is Empire’s Serayah in an ensemble which stands out for all the right reasons.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

19 Jun

Photo calls in a dramatic looking location at the Monte Carlo TV Festival open this week’s “Out of the Box.” Plus various other events delivering summer sartorial highs.

Taraji P HensonTaraji P. Henson is working the sitting down couch pose with aplomb in Monte Carlo wearing a black and red striped RVN dress paired with glamorous shades and Stuart Weitzman strappy sandals.
Ming-Na WenA stunning view from the Monte Carlo TV Festival and a super cute gold frock for Ming-Na Wen in an ideal day time photo call outfit.

Zendaya Colemand and Shay MitchellShirt dresses are a wardrobe staple and Zendaya Coleman’s monochrome L’Agence version looks both comfy and stylish (my ideal combination) at the Children Mending Heart’s 2015 Empathy Rocks Fundraiser in the very sunny Malibu. Shay Mitchell’s white jumpsuit is maybe a tad on the super floaty side, but she still looks 70s cool in this ensemble.

Ashley MadekweA better take on the all white outfit comes courtesy of Ashley Madekwe in this effortlessly chic Max Mara number at the Max Mara 2015 Women In Film Face Of The Future Event. Red lipstick bonus points ahoy.

Michael B JordanReason number 1 to be excited about the Fantastic Four press tour is Michael B. Jordan knows how to wear not your average red carpet suit.

Emilia ClarkeA whimsical Dolce & Gabbana delight from Emilia Clarke who is all smiles despite being on crutches earlier in the day and still managing a pair of strappy heels for the occasion. Getting a strong hint of ‘smile through the pain’ face.

Lena DunhamIn a way I wish Lena Dunham had saved this Mary Katrantzou gown for the Emmys rather than the cover of The Hollywood Reporter because it is just that good.

Best of the 2015 Met Gala – Part 1

5 May

This year the Met Gala is celebrating the Costume Institute’s “China: Through the Looking Glass” exhibition which opens this week. It is a theme that could be either misinterpreted or rather take a big chunk of cultural appropriation and while some went very close to the line, as is often the case with the Met Gala the theme was only hinted at – remember how very un-punk a lot of attendees were last year?

Here is Part 1 (head here for Part 2) of our ‘Best of’ rundown and while a lot of these dresses could work on any fancy pants red carpet event there are still a couple of ensembles which embrace the crazy of the Met Gala.

Keri RussellKeri Russell’s feathered emerald and iridescent Altuzarra gown is my favorite of the night capturing the theme through the fabric and it is inspired by Marlene Dietrich in Shanghai Express. Smokey eye makeup is dramatic without veering into winged liner.

Sophie TurnerAll things that shimmer and Sophie Turner’s pale green sequin Burberry frock veers into dripped in silver territory as she works the plunge and red lipstick.

Lizzy CaplanPink champagne for Lizzy Caplan in Donna Karan Atelier with exquisite beading detail and one of the stronger on theme outfits.

Fan BingbingFan Bingbing is showing off gold and cape perfection pretty much shutting the red carpet down. Definitely in my top 3.

Janelle MonaeSpeaking of incredible capes here is Janelle Monae in H&M working the whole monochrome look.

Emily BLuntMore caped goodness and Emily Blunt’s Prada works one of the other big trends of the night with embellished florals.

SolangeThis is what I’m talking about when it comes to the more eccentric sartorial take on this event and while I have no idea how Solange is going to sit in this hypnotic Giles fan like creation she sure looks like she was having fun out there.

Gabrielle UnionThis is one of those dressed to be filed under ‘any red carpet event’ and yet I am really into Gabrielle Union’s purple dress. Plus her teeny tiny clutch is on theme.

Lily CollinsFloral Chanel Couture for Lily Collins wearing a blouse and skirt combination which could be considered maybe too casual for this event, but I think it is both fantastic and beautiful. Another high point for me.

Michael B JordanMichael B. Jordan is working texture and floral in Dolce & Gabana taking home the best dressed dude title. So much swooning over this.

Claire DanesClaire Danes has gone full 90s with her lip color and her Valentino Couture gown is the perfect green companion for Michael B. Jordan’s ensemble. There’s nothing here that really hints at the theme, but the same could be said for many of the other gowns on display.

Kerry WashingtonKerry Washington’s pink Prada is a dress that looks far better in motion and is perfect for the grand stairs at the Met Gala. From the front it looks boxy and awkward; here it is a dream.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

17 Apr

The sun is shining and the influx of summer looking prints and hemline lengths at the MTV Movie Awards has me both fearing and embracing the ditching of tights. Plus the best sartorial moments of the week from other premieres and events.

Amy SchumerIt has been a big week for Amy Schumer with hosting the MTV Movie Awards, receiving a Peabody and being part of Time’s 100 Most Influential People (Tilda Swinton wrote this spectacular ode to her). Inside Amy Schumer returns next week and we have already been gifted with this. To top it off she looks really great in this monochrome Balmain mini frock, which is giving me all the Megan Draper feels.

Holland RodenShort hemlines were on trend as Holland Roden demonstrates in another take on black and white in this super funky Caterina Gatta dress. And this ensemble also wouldn’t look out of place on Mad Men this season. Cute blue pumps too (although it is a shame they blend into the carpet).

Anna CampAnother very fun dress and Anna Camp’s Peter Pilotto is a textured/pattern joy. Not entirely sure about chunky straps on the Stuart Weitzman sandals, but this is the kind of outfit that would also work at Coachella (without looking too Coachella).

Michael B JordanNow for a pair of dapper FNL boys and one thing I am really excited about when it comes to the new Fantastic Four is Michael B. Jordan on the red carpet and he is already killing it in plaid Vivienne Westwood.

Zach GilfordAll the Matt Saracen swoons are occurring right now and Zach Gilford’s got the whole cute smile thing down. Now to find him a decent TV project.

Ellie KemperMoving on to the Lilly Pulitzer for Target event with Ellie Kemper rocking a bob with bangs and an ideal dress for the warmer weather. This looks like an ideal Jane the Virgin outfit and I can see this collection popping up on this show (it is Jane’s favorite store after all).

Rose ByrneRose Byrne opts for a slightly longer cut at the Adult Beginners premiere in velvet (!) Christopher Kane and the 70s influence here is strong (and I love).

Elizabeth OlsenGoing for chic simplicity at the Avengers: Age of Ultron premiere and slaying it in Galvan is Elizabeth Olsen (I have to concentrate extra hard so I don’t end up typing a mashup of Peggy Olson/Elisabeth Moss). The white tee element is accentuated by the gold necklace and combined with midnight blue makes this a winning look.

Best of the Film Independent Spirit Awards Red Carpet 2014

2 Mar

The Spirit Awards is held by the beach in a white tent so the atmosphere is way more laid back than the big awards show of today. The red carpet reflects this as the people who have been working the awards circuit for the past couple of months can ditch traditional fancy pants frocks and can try something a little different. It’s one of my favorite red carpets for this reason and this year did not disappoint with bold color and pattern being the big trend.

Michael B JordanStarting with the guys and Michael B. Jordan shakes things up pairing a cream Dolce & Gabbana with a fun printed button-down shirt and no tie. This is the perfect attire for this afternoon event by the ocean and Jordan shows once again what a snappy dresser he is.

Melonie DiazJordan’s co-star from Fruitvale Station Melonie Diaz is wearing a Preen dress with an amazing zigzag geometric print that I am mesmerized by; it reminds me of an abstract art print. The bracelet is a nice touch that doesn’t seem too overwhelmed by the dress and the dash of pink lipstick also adds to this look.

Greta GerwigI’m pretty much head over heels for this orange Narciso Rodriguez shift dress so I’m going to ignore how much I dislike the nude shoes Greta Gerwig is sporting. I get wearing something that doesn’t detract from the frock, but not these shoes. Anyway, I love the dress and Gerwig looks amazing. As Cate Blanchett pointed out I also don’t understand how Gerwig wasn’t nominated for her performance in Frances Ha.

Kathryn HahnOh Kathryn Hahn, you bring me so much joy whenever you pop up on Parks and Recreation, your turn on Girls is part of Jessa’s best storyline and this Bibhu Mohapatra lime and navy brocade dress is stunning. The blue belt brings it all together and the side sweep hair is working like a charm. As is the bold pink lip color which I am always partial to.

Lupita NyongoThe most anticipated red carpet arrival tonight is going to be Lupita Nyong’o as she has been the undisputed style queen of awards season and this is another winning look. While I’m not normally a huge fan of playsuits, Lupita is doing wonders for this Stella McCartney metallic one, so I can put my usual animosity for this outfit type to one side.

Aubrey PlazaAnother fabulous Preen gown and while it doesn’t have the same wow factor as Diaz’s geometric affair, Aubrey Plaza looks wonderful in this ’50s style silhouette and the dash of orange piping and belting really sets this off. The orange zebra-print pumps are a far cry from most of the heels on this red carpet and they’re wonderful.

Cate BlanchettMore bold color and pattern from another one of the most anticipated red carpet arrivals tonight and that is Cate Blanchett as she tends to wear gowns that could double for a work of art. This is no different and this Roksanda Ilincic dress is another hit for her. The gold belting is bang on trend and the color blocking of this dress combined with the blue flower gives it an elegant, but playful twist.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Dec

‘Tis the season for all of those end of year musings and the start of the many award shows between now and the Oscars. “Out of the Box” is taking a look at the red carpet offerings from this week, in what I should imagine will be the first of many award show fashion posts in the coming months. While I might normally moan about the absence of color, as it’s heading towards the holiday season the variety of twists on the LBD is more than acceptable.

Gotham Awards

There is so much to say about this group shot from the Gotham Independent Film Awards and bullet points seem like the best way forward:

  • Michael B. Jordan has been killing it on the red carpet all year and I’m so happy to see him getting so much recognition; he picked up Breakthrough Actor for Fruitvale Station at this awards show.
  • Rashida Jones has filmed her last Parks and Recreation episode which is giving me all the Leslie and Ann related sads, but yay for real life friendship.
  • Also Amy Poehler looks stunning in a leather shouldered Catherine Deane dress. And yes I’m totally digging her real life romance with Nick Kroll who hosted the Gotham Awards. Will ‘The Douche’ make an appearance this season?
  • Oh hey, Jordan Catalano’s hair is super long and I kind of like it. While my teen crush on Jared Leto has all but gone I am looking forward to seeing Dallas Buyers Club and the inevitable reunion with Claire Danes at the Golden Globes. This needs to happen.

Zosia MametAt the same event Girls star Zosia Mamet looks super cute in a Rebecca Minkoff black mini jersey dress. Mamet’s red carpet face tends to give off an air of boredom, not on this occasion where she looks super smiley and comfortable. I’m also very much in love with her chunky buckled black shoes and while I don’t tend to be a heel wearer, I’m definitely coveting this pair.

Clemence Posey

This is how you do winter floral and The Tunnel star Clémence Poésy accompanies designer Erdem to the British Fashion Awards – he picked up the Red Carpet Award – and Poésy shows just why he won, as she’s rocking an Erdem creation. While I haven’t been loving the sheer trend overall (see every Dior gown Jennifer Lawrence wore for the Catching Fire press tour), Erdem has used this technique well and one of my favorite looks at the Met Gala earlier this year was Lena Dunham in Erdem.

Julianna Margulies

It’s been a big week for Julianna Margulies as The Good Wife celebrated 100 episodes and she looks stunning in Pamella Roland at the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Gala dinner. The contrasting element of the crisscross bodice with the full skirt (with bonus pockets!) is elegant and adds fun twist on the monochrome trend that has been big this year. I’d maybe like to see a crimson lip tone, but other than that this is a great look for the Good Wife star.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

1 Nov

Halloween episodes, fancy historical balls red carpet events, award season shenanigans begin and excellent street style all feature on this week’s “Out of the Box” so let’s get to it.

Warren as Ellen Trophy Wife[Source]

It’s the second week in a row that Trophy Wife features on “Out of the Box” as almost everyone gets to place dress up as part of their Halloween extravaganza. There is an array of costumes from Pete’s lawyer visual gag (a hung jury), Jackie’s Elizabeth I (that she thought was Marie Antoinette and Kate mistook for Lady Gaga), Diane’s super scary gargoyle and Kate’s centaur on wheels (courtesy of Jackie). The only person who didn’t indulge was Hillary and it is her brother Warren as Ellen DeGeneres that wins my best costume prize. Warren attempts everything with such enthusiasm including this costume even though he is hopped up on pain meds after a dental procedure and this makes his routine even funnier and hard to understand.

Bert Iron Man Trophy Wife

Bonus Trophy Wife costume mention goes to Jackie’s literal interpretation of who or what Iron Man is, luckily Bert did end up with an actual Iron Man suit and Trophy Wife once again nails the cold open with a very funny visual gag (last week involved Diane and Skype). Having such a huge cast could be problematic but so far this show is doing an excellent job with all the different groupings and because they are all part of the same family in one way or another these moments don’t feel contrived. The only character who they are finding it hard to organically involve is Meg and this is a shame as Natalie Morales has been great so far despite her limited screen time. Margaret Lyons at Vulture includes Bert and Warren in her piece on the “era of awesome weirdo kids” and I’m looking forward to seeing what Trophy Wife will do next (an early plea of “please don’t cancel this show”).

Caroline TVD Bonnie and ClydeIt wasn’t Halloween on The Vampire Diaries but they still got to play dress up thanks to a ball with a historical theme. Caroline is half of the Bonnie and Clyde and she’s pretty much a dead ringer for the Faye Dunaway’s Bonnie from the 1967 movie. Awesome Caroline is my favorite on The Vampire Diaries so I hoping this season goes beyond her pining after Tyler because she is so much more than that.

Julianna Margulies

Considering how amazing last Sunday’s episode of The Good Wife is, it’s not surprising to see Julianna Margulies with a smile this big. The red flared-skirt Philosophy coat is another reason to look happy and my outerwear envy is at an all time high with this outfit. Both the reception and the ratings were high for the appropriately named “Hitting the Fan” and it’s easily one of the best hours of TV that I have seen this year as Alicia and Cary left Lockhart/Gardner and the house of cards fell down and got propped up and then fell down again (depending on which character we are talking about). The Good Wife has shown that even in its fifth season it can do bold things and I can’t wait to see how this will impact the rest of the season.

Chanel Little Black Jacket Event

Diane Kruger is showing exactly why she is has been part of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Look of the Week on so many occasions in this Chanel Spring 2013 Couture dress at the Little Black Jacket Chanel event in Sao Paulo. The red leather belt and floral embellishments make this a simple but stunning outfit choice. There isn’t anything too fussy about Kruger’s look and the strappy saddles/lack of accessories works and is complimented by the hair down and fresh face makeup approach.

Michael B Jordan[Source]

The Emmys were over a month ago and award chatter has moved onto movies and we can look forward to months of pre Oscars chat with some TV thrown in with the Golden Globes – where we’re mostly looking forward to Tina and Amy hosting and maybe boozy stars. One face that I am so excited to see in the mix is Michael B. Jordan for his performance in Fruitvale Station. Jordan is part of The Hollywood Reporter’s actor roundtable discussion and he talks about influences on his career such as The Wire’s David Simon and Friday Night Lights creator Peter Berg.

It’s worth a watch and the discussion covers stereotypes in Hollywood, what it’s like to portray a real person, roles they’ve turned down and terrible auditions including Jake Gyllenhaal’s Lord of the Rings disaster. The problem with these roundtables is they barely scratch the surface and switch topics at a rapid pace so just when something is getting interesting they move on.  Jordan comes across as thoughtful and smart  and I want all the good things to happen for him. Style wise he has been killing it on the red carpet this year.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

12 Jul

Last week was a summer dresses special and “Out of the Box” returns to its normal format with this edition. This week we will be looking at a mixture of red carpet appearances, magazine shoots and talk shows; patterns are a huge theme and the more they clash the better.

Winner: Diane Kruger on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

DIANE KRUGER

The Bridge premiered on FX this week and so Diane Kruger has been doing the red carpet/talk show circuit much to my delight. It’s not a secret that Diane Kruger is someone who I admire as both an actress and with her bold fashion choices and the above look definitely falls into the latter category. This isn’t the first time that Kruger has opted for two very different patterns and this polka dot t-shirt with a floral print skirt from Emanuel Ungaro’s Resort 2014 will probably be quite divisive, but here at TV Ate My Wardrobe we think it looks amazing. The slit in the skirt is probably a tad too high but the high waisted belt effect and demure neckline of the t-shirt distracts from this and it’s the clashing patterns that are in focus. It’s an outfit that would be too much on most (Solange could definitely wear it) and Kruger manages to work the different patterns so it doesn’t look too out there, this is helped by minimal makeup and her simple hair down approach.

Runner Up: Michelle Dockery for Harper’s Bazaar

Michelle Dockery Harpers Bazaar

It’s the second week in a row that Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery makes an appearance on this list and while the sun might still be shining magazine editorials are looking to the fall season. This striped affair is from Miu Miu’s Fall 2013 collection and with the dash of polka dots on the neck scarf it’s another patterned success. The tights/coat combo might be a much if Dockery was walking down the street but it’s perfect for a striking magazine cover.

Runner Up: Michael B. Jordan at the Fruitvale Station Premiere

Michael B Jordan New York premiere Fruitvale Station

Michael B. Jordan is currently promoting Fruitvale Station, a film which has already picked up awards at Cannes and Sundance and is getting early Oscar buzz. Jordan is known for his roles in The WireFriday Night Lights, Parenthood and Chronicle and I’m so excited to see this much attention being given to this very special actor (Andrew Garfield is also a big fan). Jordan has also been delivering style wise on the red carpet and while I’m not normally a fan of the shiny suit, Jordan looks dapper and well put together in this attire.
