Serving Up Two Delicious Hannibal Season 3 Previews

26 May

The Hannibal countdown now enters the less than two weeks zone and we’re already salivating at what this new season will bring (it is very hard to avoid any food puns when discussing this show but just know I am shaking my head at myself). As the new episodes are within sniffing distance the onslaught of new footage steps up including a look at who survived the bloodbath that closed out last year and what Hannibal has been up to while he has been on the run with Bedelia. By the looks of things entertaining and dining. Sometimes with the guest ending up on a plate.

Hannibal S3 - HannibalHannibal of course can recite Dante’s first sonnet, ride a motorbike without messing up his hair and talk oh so casually about killing people as the ‘Hannibal’s Dilemma’ preview reveals. However he is still being hunted and Bedelia warns him that he is going to get caught; the super bashed and bloody appearance adds weight to her theory. There are also flashes of the characters left behind to pick up the pieces after what Hannibal did to them, plus a glimpse at new additions to the cast such as Tao Okamoto who is playing Chiyoh. Oh and also some characters we know to be dead show up (flashback? fantasy sequence? both?).

If you are a regular TV Ate My Wardrobe reader you will know how much I love talking about the costume design on Hannibal and if you can hear clapping and screaming right now it is down to a glimpse of this Bedelia ensemble in this preview:

IMG_0642The color, the hat and the style is everything and their European ‘on the run’ collection is one of the many things I am highly anticipating when Hannibal returns June 4.

In the second preview or rather the ‘first look’ the cast discuss the new season in a slightly more in-depth fashion showing some of the same images we have already seen and giving some background context; this includes expanding on the Bride of Hannibal storyline. Once again there are some people present in this video whose fate was left hanging in the balance and I think it is safe to say that Will, Alana and Jack are all very much alive. How well they are mentally is unclear and the hunt to find Hannibal will not rest on Will Graham’s shoulders alone.

Another costume that has caused much excitement here at TV Ate My Wardrobe is Alana’s plaid pantsuit from these cast promo shots. Sometimes clothes worn for these shoots are only for promotional purposes so I was thrilled to see Alana wearing the plaid pantsuit in this preview. She also has an additional item and the fall or rather massive shove from the first floor window has left her requiring a cane.

IMG_0644As you can see in the photo above Alana’s will cross paths with Margot Verger (another victim of Hannibal’s manipulation) and there is a suggestion in the preview that things might get a lot more intimate between the pair. I only say suggestion because it is such a quick cut and this show loves a good dream/fantasy sequence so who knows what is real. But yes smooching is definitely on the more intimate end of hangouts.

We also get a glimpse of the storyline which will dominate the second half of the season with Francis Dolarhyde aka ‘Red Dragon’ which looks very promising (and terrifying).

Watch the two previews below and for more season 3 chat head here. Hannibal returns Thursday, June 4.

The Hollywood Reporter’s “Women in Motion” Cannes Conversations

25 May

Before we get to my favorite time of the year (Emmy roundtables!) The Hollywood Reporter has served up an interesting conversation starter with their “Women in Motion” series at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The first one is between Salma Hayek and Matthias Schoenaerts followed by Frances McDormand. They are both fascinating chats about women on screen and the current climate talking about limitations and how they circumvent those with the projects they choose.

The chat with Salma Hayek is one I referenced when discussing Maggie Gyllenhaal’s remarks last week regarding her age (this story is both a total “of course” moment and shocking all at once). Hayek mentions some equally ‘holy shit’ and sadly not surprising comments she has received about her accent and appearance. She also discusses how she got Ugly Betty picked up in her role as producer and what her theory is to get executives to pay attention (the short answer is money but you should watch the whole thing to get Hayek’s take on it all).

Becoming a producer is also one route Frances McDormand has taken with the incredible HBO mini-series Olive Kitteridge (which she also played the titular role in) as her first producing credit. McDormand talks about this process and one thing they tried to get her character Olive to do. Money is also a big topic of discussion here too and for McDormand she has found that cable networks are where these kinds of projects are getting made.

If you have the time to watch both in full then it is totally worth it for so many reasons. But especially if you like hearing smart women talking candidly about their experiences in the entertainment industry. McDormand also dives into the box office debate regarding Pitch Perfect 2 and Mad Max: Fury Road which is also excellent. Just picture me drawing hearts around Salma Hayek and Frances McDormand.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

22 May

The TV season might be coming to an end as many shows have aired their finales over the last few weeks, but there are plenty of red carpet events and screenings as Emmy chatter is only just beginning. One of the major events this week was of course the end of Mad Men (and you can read all my tear stained thoughts here) and another chance for the cast to show off their sartorial prowess. While we have already documented Mindy Kaling’s Cannes fashion parade there are a few more pretty frocks to show off.

Kiernan ShipkaKiernan Shipka has been a revelation in her performance as Sally Draper and I really can’t wait to see what she does next. She has also consistently been the best dressed cast member and she’s still only 15. Please Hollywood, treat her kindly. At the Film Independent screening of Mad Men she wore a very cute Valentino white ruffled frock which complements both her age and look.

Elisabeth MossAs with Peggy Olson, Elisabeth Moss has really upped her style game over the last few years and this is a simple and fun outfit. The metallic belting is an edgy touch and I love the splash of color with the orange peep-toe pumps, even if they don’t entirely go with the rest of the ensemble.

Amy PoehlerBack to Cannes and the Inside Out premiere with another metallic belted beauty; Amy Poehler sticks with Stella McCartney and it pays off.

Melanie LaurentThe Cannes red carpet photos have a habit of looking both overwhelming and incredibly romantic in a classic movie star way. This shot of Melanie Laurent falls in the latter camp and her super sparkly Zuhair Murad Couture beaded frock is adding to this effect.

Diane KrugerAnother Cannes stunner and TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite; Diane Kruger has gone for an ethereal Prada frock for the Maryland premiere. Here she is with co-star Matthias Schoenaerts who, in not shocking news scrubs up well for the red carpet (everyone should go see Far From the Madding Crowd which is very good for reasons that also include Schoenaerts).

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter SarsgaardMaggie Gyllenhaal is deservedly once again receiving praise and accolades for her portrayal of Nessa Stein in last year’s exceptional mini-series The Honourable Woman including at this week’s 40th Annual Gracie Awards. Wearing a super chic black Alexander McQueen gown with killer cuff detail and red lipstick to swoon over Gyllenhaal poses with husband Peter Sarsgaard.

This has been a week where actresses have been confirming how awful Hollywood can be with Gyllenhaal’s comments about how she is too old at 37 to play a love interest for a 55-year-old – Amy Schumer’s ‘Last Fuckable Day‘ sketch is far too real –  and Salma Hayek spoke at length about the many obstacles she has faced in this industry.

Chelsea PerettiIt’s not just Chelsea Peretti’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine character Gina that gets all the style love from us here and at the Webby Awards where Peretti won Outstanding Comedic Performance (for the Netflix special Chelsea Peretti: One of the Greats) she wore a super hypnotic all the stripes Mason by Michelle Mason frock.

Rose ByrneKeeping things casual cool on the Red Nose Day red carpet is Rose Byrne. Those pants look like they could be satin and yet somehow she is making them work.

Kerry WashingtonAt the Disney International Upfronts Kerry Washington also goes for a relaxed funky outfit and what appears to be a sweater and skirt is actually an Alexander Lewis dress. The green shimmer from her Le Silla shoes goes wonders with the metallic stripes.

OITNBThis Orange is the New Black group photo at a For Your Consideration screening and Q & A this week is delightful for several reasons including 1) Jenji Kohan’s dress, 2) so many good outfits/range of styles and 3) as a reminder that the new season is less than a month away.

Mindy Kaling’s Amazing Cannes Film Festival Fashion Parade

21 May

Mindy Kaling is a regular TV Ate My Wardrobe style fixture for both her on and off screen attire (and The Mindy Project will return) so Kaling’s recent overseas adventure has made me all a fashion fluster. This week Kaling has been showcasing her sartorial flare at the Cannes Film Festival in a variety of daytime pretty and stunning evening frocks documenting all these wardrobe changes on Instagram.

Appearing as the voice of Disgust, Kaling has been promoting the new Pixar movie Inside Out along with former Office co-star Phyllis Smith and Amy Poehler; the film has been getting a tremendous reception with plenty of tear inducing moments (I am so screwed if recent reactions are anything to go by).

Inside OutI love this photo so much with Poehler and Smith going for striking patterns while Kaling opts for a Roksanda Ilincic color block sleeve dress.

The detail is in the accessories with a fantastic Les Petits Joueurs clutch and Kimberly McDonald jewelry.

And for some close up Poehler/Kaling giving good sunglasses face (with a surprise appearance from John Lasseter).

https://instagram.com/p/20wXEzpQ_s/?taken-by=mindykaling

Same day and a quick change as the ladies are joined by their Inside Out co-star Lewis Black all wearing 3D glasses to match the color of their character. More bold choices across the board embracing the sunny climate with Kaling killing it in matching Alexander McQueen flower collage jacquard skirt and crop top.

Inside Out CannesFor the big evening event Mindy opts for someone who knows her very well in custom Salavador Perez. Perez is the costume designer on The Mindy Project and he has created several other beautiful gowns in the past for these big events; it is clear why she trusts him.

Mindy KalingSimple, elegant and striking; working bold color blocking in a way her earlier dress choice hinted at.

Continuing fun fashion choices the following day in a floral mesh Sachin & Babi Noir F/W15 frock. Later on Kaling switched out her heels for Cons (as you can see in the video below maybe as a nod to Emily Blunt’s comments on the whole Cannes shoe controversy).

https://instagram.com/p/23CdEoJQ1v/?taken-by=mindykaling

And finally while Kaling has generally been playing in the red/pink/purple wheelhouse she ends things with jeans, black top and a splash of yellow in Tory Burch doing the cool chic jacket slung over her shoulders thing. The Edie Parker clutch from earlier in the day also works wonders.

https://instagram.com/p/234ihAJQ12/?taken-by=mindykaling

Rounding this all off with the aforementioned Cons and a chat via The Hollywood Reporter about why you shouldn’t try and erase things from your past (you might end up in a sticky Back to the Future situation). Amy Poehler’s glasses are also excellent, as is her new hair color. Basically this has been a very good Cannes for Inside Out and its cast.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

20 May

The first half of this week’s Behind the Insta-Scenes is pretty much a game of spot the CW star unleashing a whole world of even more crossover potential if these photos are anything to go by. Plus saying goodbye to Mad Men and spending more time with the cast who are dominating behind the scenes shenanigans at the moment.

First up ‘How many CW actors can you fit in one selfie?’ courtesy of Arrow’s Emily Bett Rickards. Cute bow tie, Carlos Valdes.

Followed by ‘How many CW stars can you fit in an elevator?’ selfie thanks to Paul Blackthorne (Team Arrow cast is killing it with these group shots).

An almost all Jane the Virgin cast with another group photo taking place in the background; stacks and stacks of selfies. Definitely into Jaime Camil’s glasses, however I have a feeling Rogelio would not feel the same way.

The crossovers continue on board the plane with Grant Gustin taking a peak at Jane the Virgin’s Brett Dier from a few rows back.

And while I recover from the emotionally draining and brilliant Flash finale here is a very cute outtake from the recent Variety issue.

I adore Petra on Jane the Virgin so let’s continue the CW love with this very comfy looking yellow rug and Yael Grobglas.

And one cake covered last night of shooting for a CW star as Nina Dobrev departs The Vampire Diaries.

After I watched the Mad Men series finale this made me cry. It’s been an emotional week (yes it’s only Wednesday).

Feelings on top of feelings. What became of Ginsberg?

In so much agreement with this and Peggy’s ending made me very happy.

Photographer Lisa Guerriero shares some shots from the Mad Men set including this close up of Peggy’s plaid and polka dots. This was a repeat season 7 outfit; Peggy wore it when Joan gave the best answer to a lunch question and alone in the office when she spilled coffee all over the floor.

Also from Lisa Guerriero (whose work we also featured here) and a sneak look at break time activities.

The You’re the Worst cast continue to be the best at this including Huey Lewis and the News serenading.

Pattern clashing with these dudes forever.

And more with an all important edition of Sunday Funday!

The Wish List: Gina’s Short Sleeve Denim Jacket

19 May

It was the Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 2 finale on Sunday, which means one last Gina costuming Wish List item. Gina is a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite including her sweater queen status as well as her love for all things wolfie. And this was a really great finale pairing Gina up with Terry in a mission to keep Holt at the precinct, dealing with the big Jake/Amy romance, a very fun Diaz/Boyle story and a scene that made me all kinds of teary. TV is causing a lot of waterworks at the moment; end of season is an emotional time.

Gina’s outfit du jour is a play on the big denim trend this season as denim is everywhere (although I kind of feel like denim is always on trend). The item in question is the ‘Blondie’ short sleeve denim jacket by Genetic Los Angeles and in typical Gina fashion she puts her own spin on it by wearing it as a shirt rather than a jacket.

B99 2.23 GinaPairing it with a stripe skirt rather than going for the double denim approach as seen on the model is also a stronger statement and sometimes there is such a thing as too much denim (but not when Britney and Justin are doing it #NeverForget). I am partial to the stripe tee, because of course.

Mad Men Series Finale “Person to Person” – One Call at a Time

18 May

Letting Don Draper go is hard to do and the last ever episode of Mad Men shows that even when Don is thousands of miles away and suffering a crisis the pull of those he cares about is still strong. Don has a pattern of fleeing, forever looking over his shoulder after all the mistakes he has made and yet he can never quite make a clean break as there is always something that brings him back. While we don’t see Don’s big New York return the transition from Don’s smile while meditating to the concept behind that Coke ad is enough to suggest Don does indeed make it back to his former life; the cycle forever goes on and on. Don might never quite be at peace with himself but he is edging closer to having a concept of home.

Mad Men 7.14 Don sittingThe phone plays a huge part in keeping Don tethered to who he was and still is; the last time I talked about how the telephone is deployed in an episode I focused on how this device helps with the concealment of feelings. In “Person to Person” it does the opposite and it allows confessions aplenty from matters of the heart to those deep dark secrets these characters don’t want anyone to know. It also has the power to aid a breakup.

Mad Men 7.14 Sally phoneDon’s relationship with Sally has recently been mostly phone based; this makes sense because she’s at boarding school and he’s moving from state to state with no actual plan. Even without seeing her face, Don can sense that something is up with his daughter as she has no interest in his Utah adventures (although really this reaction is pretty accurate even without a personal trauma) and at first he asks if it is to do with a boy. Sally could have easily hung up without spilling her mother’s secret but deep down she knows her father should be told about Betty’s condition. Last week’s entire episode had me yelling at the screen for Sally to ring Don and tell him so he could come swooping home, but that was never going to happen. This isn’t how their story ends.

At first Don thinks her mother is just being a hypochondriac, then he hears the full severity of the diagnosis and it hits him hard. Sally’s voice cracks when she initially tells him and then she moves into the protective big sister role (that we see again later when she returns home and Bobby Draper’s attempts at looking after his heartbreaking) getting her father to take what she is saying about the future of her brothers seriously. This is where Sally cuts off emotionally and it doesn’t help that there’s another girl skulking about waiting to use the phone. Nothing is private when you have a communal situation like this. She drops the bombshell and ends the conversation with “I can’t talk right now” which is a pretty devastating last scene between these two characters. Costume observation – Sally has worn the necklace her father got her in every scene since that Valentine’s episode showing their bond despite his persistent absence.

Mad Men 7.14 BettyOn a couple of occasions in this finale we have back to back scenes involving calls that directly result from the previous one; Don immediately rings Betty after Sally has all but hung up on him. Don offers to come home and Betty is of course mad that no one can keep her secret. If only she knew that Bobby knows exactly what is going on   thanks to the not so quiet discussions she had with Henry when they were fighting about treatment. This is another case of revealing everything and experiencing this incredible connection thanks to wires and this plastic device. Of course Betty rejects Don’s suggestions of coming home (this isn’t his home) and having the boys live with him because she wants to keep things “as normal as possible and you not being here is part of that.” We can see how ill Betty looks and part of this is down to her attire and lack of makeup, plus her hair doesn’t have the same hairspray helmet rigidity as usual. Her nails are still perfect though. And here comes the kicker of an exchange.

Mad Men 7.14 Don phone to BettyDon calls her Birdie and this sets off all the tears for Don, Betty and I. So much has happened between this pair with so many bitter words, but they still have this immense ability to slay me with this very personal and intimate nickname.

Mad Men 7.14 Don phone to PeggyInstead of returning to his current home, Don instead moves further west and to the state he flees to in moments like this. When he mentions LA I figured we might see Megan, instead he goes to see Stephanie as a reminder of his Dick Whitman past (and funnily enough the last time I discussed the use of telephones was the last time we saw Stephanie as she painted a picture to Don that didn’t match her real circumstance). Through Stephanie, Don ends up at a hippy retreat in various seminars he clearly has nothing but disdain for. When he can’t escape (because Stephanie fled taking the car with her) he turns to an old friend making another important call home.

Mad Men 7.14 Peggy PhoneBefore Don can even say hello Peggy stands up to deliver her “Where the hell are you?” annoyance, he can’t see her stand but visually for us this shows us just how mad she is and then she softens sitting back down as she reassures him that he can come back. The mention of Coke is important for later and once again this account is dangled in front of him like an advertising pot of gold. Declarations such as Don’s “I can’t get out of here” isn’t just referring to his physical inability to leave as he is far too stuck in his head and the mistakes he has made, which he lists off to Peggy in a sad recap of misdemeanors from scandalizing his child to the really big secret of taking another man’s name.

Don and Peggy is the relationship at the heart of Mad Men and this conversation is so important because of the level of trust and understanding between the pair. Peggy has real concern for Don and Elisabeth Moss does this little inhale followed by a difficulty to say anything that is just so devastating good. This is their last dance together and while it is far from a physical interaction like the Sinatra aided moment it still packs a huge emotional punch seeing Don allowing himself to be this vulnerable. In the same way Sally cut Don off, he does the same to Peggy before he doubles over shaking looking like he is having a panic attack.

And now for the super swoony heart swells to a thousand times its normal size sequence.

Mad Men 7.14 Stan phoneAs soon as Peggy gets off the phone to Don the first person she calls is Stan and what starts as a conversation about Don turns into an apology swiftly moving into a declaration of love. In person these two always end up bickering with Peggy taking whatever positives Stan says twisting it into a criticism. On the phone they are perfect and Stan brings this up segueing into a confession and one I have long been waiting to hear. Peggy is all a fluster as she unpacks everything that has just been said while seemingly only just getting this is how she feels too.

What this delivers is a showcase of every amazing Elisabeth Moss facial expression, a hit parade if you will from a whole heap of confusion to the best smile I have ever seen. The hand on her heart gesture is something Stan can’t see and it comes with an abstract “and you’re here” but it is pretty much one of the greatest things this show has done. We don’t know exactly what point Stan leaves Peggy talking – I suspect it is before he hears her say “I think I’m in love you too” – and come sprinting to her office, but we hear him coming and it is magical. It has been a long time coming and yet it is also a huge surprise that they went there. Just look at that smile (and yet another amazing Peggy dress).

Mad Men 7.14 Peggy (stan)One other pairing almost became a thing as Joan asked Peggy to go into business with her, first setting up a lunch while adjusting the TV for Kevin while he watches Sesame Street. Ultimately Peggy decided to stay doing what she is doing because this is what she loves doing, but we did get one final fabulous and slightly contentious Peggy/Joan scene.

Mad Men 7.14 Joan and KevinGoing back a step and Joan’s relationship with Richard was all sunshine and let’s try everything until she realized that she isn’t ready to be on vacation forever. There is still work to be done with Ken reaching out to her for her expertise and while McCann could never appreciate her skills there are plenty who know what Joan is capable of, including herself. By answering the phone while she was having a discussion with Richard about their relationship it became abundantly clear they want very different things in life.

Mad Men 7.14 JoanAs Joan clutched the phone to her chest (while wearing the most fabulous leopard print robe) I definitely uttered “what an asshole” out loud.

But ending Joan’s story with Holloway Harris (got to have two names) made me so ridiculously happy.

Mad Men 7.14 Holloway HarrisCue all Broad City Yas Kween gifs please.

Stepping away from connections and revealing truths on the phone to highlight some other moments that made this a truly satisfying way to end Mad Men.  First up Pete, Peggy and the cactus.

Mad Men 7.14 Pete and PeggyPeggy pushes buttons and it isn’t a coincidence that pretty much all of her significant relationships have been just as heavy on admiration and antagonism. The first moment in the episode to get those misty eyes going came as Pete and Peggy said goodbye; in the same way Birdie has so much history between Don and Betty, “a thing like that” is so connected with Pete and so Peggy saying it back to him is loaded with so much meaning. For all that has gone on between them, there is ultimately warmth and respect. We’ve come a long way.

Mad Men 7.14 PeggyIn this shot Peggy is looking at Harry Crane how we all look at Harry Crane while wearing an incredible green and orange outfit that I need in my life.

Mad Men 7.14 Peggy (stripes)This ensemble is a harder one to pull off and yet I am still all in. Peggy’s costuming and style this season really reflects how far she has come.

Mad Men 7.14 StanThe highlight being her McCann entrance outfit, which is hanging on the back of her door. Nice Halloween decoration on her Roger Sterling (via Bert Cooper) gifted art.

Mad Men 7.14 DonDon staring out to the ocean he once waded out into and the cut from him meditating to the 1971 Coke commercial made me go from huh this Don ending is kind of unsatisfactory to HOLY SHIT THIS IS EXCELLENT. Don is going home after all. The cycle will probably continue, but at least he now has some semblance of self.

Mad Men, I’m going to miss you.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

15 May

An upfronts heavy “Out of the Box” continuing the delightful patterned frock trend with a dash of Cannes in the mix because I don’t want to deny anyone a good dress twirl.

LupitaLet’s kick things off with this stunning Lupita Nyong’o moment at Cannes in green pleated Gucci and it is giving me so many 2014 Oscar feelings. I cannot wait for the Star Wars press tour.

Gillian AndersonAnother thing to get excited about is the return of The X-Files (which now has a premiere date – January 24) and even though I’m not entirely sure how I feel about a blonde Scully as her red hair is very much part of her signature look, I do approve of Gillian Anderson’s funky dress at this event.

Nasim PedradLike jumpsuits and leather jackets, leopard print appears on my ‘one day I will try this’ list and Nasim Pedrad is selling the virtues of this style choice rather well at the Fox upfront. Excellent clutch choice too.

Hannah SimoneWhile I’m not crazy about the shoulder cutouts (and I prefer Gillian Jacobs sleeveless version at the Community TCA panel), Hannah Simone is working this Tanya Taylor frock. Belting and lip color get the accessories and makeup bonus points.

Stephanie BeatrizTaking a brief pretty dress pause with Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Stephanie Beatriz and yes I bemoaned ruffled shirts just yesterday, but a girl is allowed to change her mind especially when it is paired with killer black pants and a gold blazer.

Aja Naomi King and Samira WileyAja Naomi King and Samira Wiley spring dress it up a storm at the Entertainment Weekly and People upfronts party; very much feeling Wiley’s iridescent and angular clutch.

Caterina ScorsoneMore fun florals and Caterina Scorsone’s red rose dress is a delight at the ABC upfront event.

Martha PlimptonLiving the polka dot dream! I love everything about Martha Plimpton’s classic 50s influence outfit.

Darby StanchfieldA simple chic black dress for Darby Stanchfield and the shoes and hair are where things get interesting. Over on Stanchfield’s Instagram she gives a detailed look at this super intricate hair style. Not one to try by yourself perhaps.

Victor GarberSpy Daddy! Victor Garber is one of the dapper dudes on the CW at the moment. I am very excited to see him on Legends of Tomorrow. Nice pocket square.

Stephen Amell, Ian Somerhalder , Grant GustinMore handsome dudes being handsome in suits (Grant Gustin’s takes the prize here for me). Excellent photobombing work from Aisha Tyler too.

Gina RodriguezThis also looks like it would be super fun to twirl in and Gina Rodriguez pairs a simple white tee with a stunning floal skirt at the CW upfront presentation.

TV Rewind: Felicity, “The Graduate” & “Time Will Tell”

14 May

Felicity, Episodes 4.17 & 4.18
“The Graduate” & “Time Will Tell”
Original Air Dates: Apr. 24 & May 1, 2002

Felicity 4.17 graduationEmma: The big mystery from these two episodes is not how Meghan can send Felicity back in time, but how she managed to get away with copy that dissertation and a one sentence ‘oh yeah that was fine and now we are graduating’ explainer. Some time has passed since the last episode as Ben is out of hospital and yep they are all graduating. A LOT happens over the course of both and while I have an itch to jump ahead to time travel there is also a lot to unpack in “The Graduate.”

We open with Noel and Felicity in a cab with Noel asking us if Felicity is okay, it isn’t blatantly blatantly obvious but it is using JJ’s favorite Alias in media res narrative device as I suspected and as we discover later in the episode this is just after Felicity and Ben have decided to part ways. Felicity tells Noel she is okay and there’s also a voiceover talking about how ‘this isn’t how it was suppose to end’ and the latter, it turns out, is part of a tape letter to Ben. The triangle even though it has leaned heavily one way for an age now is coming back into focus.

The scene cuts to Ben and Felicity in bed talking about graduation, how she managed to get a pass for that art class (not the essay of course, still huh) and that the safety net which has kept them together will be gone. Ben ends up proposing in a semi spontaneous way (he mentions how he’s been thinking about it since the hospital) and this very much feels like a way to reassure Felicity rather than something they should actually be doing. She doesn’t say yes straight away and for once she is thinking rationally about Ben but when Ben gets a call about Lauren going into labor, Felicity changes her unsure answer into a yes. Oh, Felicity.

Ben goes from super into this idea to being a little distant when he returns from the birth of Andrew (his dads name – I feel like this was not something I knew). This is classic Ben as he wants to please/save everyone. The Arizona debate returns and he somewhat assumes that Felicity will just come with him now that he put a ring on it. I mean he didn’t even do that part yet.

To make things even more stressful for Felicity her parents are being their usual overbearing selves but for once her dad makes a good point that she is always following Ben. Things get even more fraught when Richard (of course it is Richard) spills the details to Papa Porter that Ben is not only a baby daddy but that he is moving to Arizona and Felicity is going with him.

In this episode there is so much going on that it is hard to keep up with all the huge decisions/breakups that take place but one thing becomes very clear and that is without the safety net and with Ben’s new family responsibilities it means things are over for Ben and Felicity (well sort of). It is sad and they share one last night together, which felt like one of the most realistic things this show has done in a while.

What did you make of everything happening all at once and how graduation is suddenly thrust upon us?

Felicity 4.17 Ben and FelicityJulie: Yes, this show has completely lost base with reality. For me, watching these two episodes was basically just two hours of, “Huh?”

One of the more unrealistic things that happens in “The Graduate” is Felicity managing to pass that art history class without any sort of repercussions beyond failing the paper. However, I suppose it’s a blessing that this storyline is disposed of so quickly. Because I COULD NOT with it.

The quick proposal, while misguided, did feel pretty real to me. It’s so college — things are ending, you’re just jumping into adulthood, getting married seems like the next step, the right step. Ben and Felicity want to hold onto each other and their relationship and their NOW, though this seems like the (wrong) way to do it, especially considering all the reasons this is an awful idea (she has a job in New York, he has to move to Arizona to be with his kid, etc.)

This episode (and the next) confirmed for me why I think Ben is not great, Bob, for Felicity right now. And Mr. Porter does sum it up: She’s been following Ben for four years. I love that she actually does throw that knowledge at Ben. He needed to hear it, because of how true it is. I think he very much expected Felicity to accept his proposal and follow him to Arizona, because that’s what she does. I don’t think it was intentionally malicious on Ben’s part, but I also think it proves how little thought he gives to what Felicity herself actually wants.

Other things about “The Graduate,” before we get into the more WTF time travel episode, 1) Elena was basically nowhere. There was a scene where she and Javier say goodbye to Felicity, but I don’t think they’re ever in the same frame together, and I wonder if she was acting with a Keri Russell stand-in. I’m trying to make this into a whole Kalinda/Alicia thing. (And then considering what they do to her character in the next episodes…somebody on the Felicity writing staff hates Elena.) 2) The med school reset. We just spent two whole years with Felicity proclaiming art as her life and now, all of a sudden, she’s back on medicine. And Ben has followed her to Palo Alto for school, so I guess he’s finally the one following her, but at the same time it feels like him horning in on her life. Go be with your baby, Ben.

Anything to add on “The Graduate?”

Felicity 4.17 ElenaEmma: I mentioned this on Twitter particularly in the relation to the second episode but these episodes feel very OC season 4 – the writers are having fun because they know that it’s pretty much dunzo. I’m enjoying the pure what the fuck aspect while also raising my eye own at the same time (I’m not actual raising my eyebrow because I’m not so great at that).

One thing I did feel about the graduation was how much it tapped into the finality of it all and even though you’re going to stay in touch with some people, this is it for the no responsibility part of your life. It also made me a little teary because that’s how I get about these things and I still panic about all the things I haven’t done since college or what I should have done at college to improve my position now. Basically I had a lot of fun and could have done a bit more prep work for career. And unlike Ben I didn’t just decide to be a doctor in my third year.

The scene that got me the most teary was not between Ben and Felicity, instead it was between Meghan and Felicity and this is the one that felt the most real to me. But urgh with the lack of Elena, this along with The Good Wife debacle is the greatest mystery of our time. And then the thing that Broad City mentioned happens (more on that later).

This episode could easily be a series finale as everything is tied up so neatly in the final Dear Ben montage. This comes after what turns out to be an IMPORTANT conversation between Noel and Felicity at the airport and we join them in the cab scene that starts the episode. At the airport (is he in the departure lounge? It looks like 9/11 definitely didn’t happen in this universe) she asks him if he ever thinks about the two them ending up together and he clearly lies that he never has. Even without the confirmation in the following episode it is a certainty that Noel only thinks about them as a couple (even if he is good at pretending otherwise).

It’s all lovely and then some super twee version of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” kicks in and I couldn’t stop laughing. We then cut to 6 months later and the montage of what everyone is up to followed by Ben making his grand declaration and joining Felicity in Palo Alto and yes it really is his turn. I am still very much Team Ben at this point and even though he makes the biggest fucking mistake in “Time will Tell” I still can’t help but want him and Felicity to end up together (I have thoughts on this storyline, many thoughts).

What they seem to be doing is manoeuvring characters and their motivations so that we can have one final love triangle situation. Do you agree that there are some shenanigans that go down that are rather contrived just so we can end up with one last Team Ben vs Team Noel hurrah?

Julie: The airport thing is ridiculous. What plane ticket did Noel buy in order to get past security? This show was filmed in 2002, immediately after 9/11. But, as you also suspect, I’m beginning to think 9/11 didn’t happen in Felicity World. Also, time travel is possible. Also no one has killed Richard yet.

I’m going to jump into “Time Will Tell” here because it’s hard not to. I’d LOVE to know what was going on in the writers’ heads when they came up with this concept. I’m guessing that it’s A) a who-the-fuck-cares OC move because the show is ending and B) a way to undo a lot of the negative character stuff they created during this season. I think they realized they had made MISTAKES and had done several of their characters a disservice and this is their way of taking a mulligan. Or maybe it’s a way to prove to the Team Noel people that Team Noel was always a bad idea, so shut up, whiners.

So, yeah. There is time travel. Felicity is in Palo Alto with Ben. Six months (or more, maybe a year?) have passed since graduation. Elena is DEAD. I repeat: Elena is DEAD. She got hit by a car outside of med school. (I see, time travel story-wise why they did that. It’s a way to prove to Felicity that she has really traveled through time. That said, what a shitty ending for Elena’s character.) Also, Noel is getting married and Ben is cheating on Felicity. She catches him kissing a study buddy in the med school library. What the actual fuck, Ben? I actively hate him for this. I have forgiven a lot, Ben-wise, but this is an out-and-out dick move. And Felicity blames herself, because of course she does. She says she’s been hard to live with because her BEST COLLEGE FRIEND JUST DIED. Ugh. Ben. So much anger right now. Talk to your girlfriend, Ben. Don’t just start kissing the first skank who seems like she’s more fun to be around.

Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest…Felicity breaks up with him and heads to New York solo for Noel’s wedding. He’s marrying Zoe, which, gross. Noel flirts with Felicity, she flirts with Noel. She starts to wonder if the two of them should’ve dated back when they hooked up the first time. And this is the writers’ way of exploring the thing that they didn’t do back in the beginning of the season. Meghan sends Felicity back in time and gives her a chance to try Noel on for size.

I’ve said many words. What is your reaction to this beginning of this episode?

Felicity 4.17 FelicityEmma: One quick thing to mention about “The Graduate” as it was directed by Scott Foley and I always like it when shows let their stars have a go at directing. For some reason he was very into shooting through half open doors. Which I’m sure is his slightly labored way of graduation being like opening a door or something like that.

From what I can tell this is six months after the six months and everything is terrible for Felicity – Elena is dead (what?) and Ben is a dirty cheater, plus Noel is getting married to Zoe. First up Elena got shafted so badly this season, but luckily for us it’s not all over for Tangi Miller as she’s still alive in the past. Now this is what prompted Felicity to pull away and I just don’t believe what happens next, even the time travel is more believable. Ben cheats on Felicity and while I guess this isn’t outside the realms of possibilities the very public smooch is ridiculous. Your reaction/feelings toward Ben is more than understandable, I’m just in denial and hope there’s some way out of this dumb as fuck move. Also the conversation where she finds out it has been going on for a month is such a gut punch for her.

What this does give us is a heartbroken Felicity crying on the phone to Meghan in double denim – not of the red variety – and Meghan getting to be the best get a grip friend Felicity needs right now. First she makes sure no one else knows about the breakup as Felicity insists she doesn’t want to overshadow the big day – why Noel? – and then she sets to some revenge spells. The first one is trip spell (and works) and Meghan’s mystical track record goes back to season 1 when she put the group photo back together wrong.

After Ben shows up and makes things awkward (of course he does) Felicity gets drunk with Meghan revealing how she thinks she made a mistake with who she chose after the big roof night and she would do everything differently. As I mentioned earlier there is stuff I would probably do differently during college but sadly I don’t have a friend with mystical powers. I love how Meghan comes across as a really confident and yet terrible witch; somehow she sends her drunk/heartbroken friend back through time so she can do just that.

This is where things really get fun and this is a storyline I’ve been waiting for since we started season 1; it’s even more ridiculous than I expected and I’m so glad it’s for more than one episode. First there is the slightly orangy hue to denote that we are in time travel land and then there is the whole Felicity is aware and everyone else thinks she’s insane. This gives Keri Russell a chance to flex her comedy chops as last time was so tortured whereas this time Felicity gives no fucks and it’s the best.

Even though she’s set on Noel this time and she is so mad at Ben she has a couple of moments where she feels pangs towards her now ex. This makes sense and it also pits Noel versus Ben in a way we have not seen before. It’s like the playing field has only been leveled for Felicity and everyone else is spinning around her orbit. Some things stay the same as Tracy and Elena still break up but this time it’s before they make it to the venue meaning Sean and Meghan probably won’t get married either. Ben gets wasted after he has failed his first test so it looks like his medical career might not progress all that far. Also Ben does not have his super hot short hair like he had at the start of the year, this makes me sad.

What did you make of this sort of more assertive Felicity and the whole time travel plot?

Felicity 4.18 Meghan and FelicityJulie: I think my biggest beef with the Ben cheating thing is that it’s just so blatantly cruel. They have been through so much, they’ve overcome so much, and this seems completely mean. It’s one thing to kiss someone while drunk in a drunk bar. It’s another thing COMPLETELY to make out with your study buddy in the middle of the afternoon in the library. For a month. That’s premeditated dickery, and that’s a deal breaker, ladies (I’ve been watching a lot of 30 Rock.)

Though, maybe it’s totally realistic, which, fine, (guys are dicks even when they promise not to be dicks), but I hold Ben Covington and his feelings for Felicity to a higher standard, especially if this is who she’s going to choose over Noel or herself.

Good call on Ben’s long hair! Felicity’s hair is back to being curlier again, but Scott Speedman wouldn’t get a haircut?

After all my ranting up there about Ben, you’d probably think I’m squarely on Team Noel here, but no. I think what this episode did highlight is that maybe Felicity and Noel are better as just friends. I don’t think she’s hot for Noel, nor he for her. I think she likes the idea of being with Noel, but I don’t see them working long-term.

That said, I don’t think she and Ben work long-term either. He’s the hot guy she’ll always remember fondly, but he’s not so great for her, life-wise.

I’m interested in the Butterfly Effect of this time travel. Tracy and Elena don’t end up married (and Donald Faison doesn’t even have to show up for a cameo). Meghan and Sean probably don’t end up married either. I wonder if Lauren will end up pregnant or if Noel will end up seeing a shrink. Or if Elena ends up dying. Or if Felicity will decide not to wear two denim pieces together.

Which do-overs do you hope to see?

Felicity 4.18 Felicity and MeghanEmma: The cruelty and their long history is why I don’t buy the cheating happening in this manner and for all the mistakes both of them have made in the past this feels completely out of character. And of course I really hate Claire because it is a huge dick move as a friend of Felicity’s to pull this level of shit.

One reason I guess they didn’t cut Ben’s hair is when they get back to the present it might be harder to explain his sudden buzz cut.

I agree with you about Felicity and Noel and if there is anything this show has taught us over the last few seasons is how good they are as friends. I did enjoy seeing her all super into them being in a relationship together whereas he was obviously freaking out over Ben finding out and Felicity being so open about everything. This is very out of character for Felicity but as she is the one reliving this time over again she knows how it will play out. The hickey came into play but this time she gave no shits about covering it up with an endless stream of turtlenecks and it was refreshing to not go through the same tortured feelings (even if they are the more realistic).

Felicity’s decision making process falls into two camps – impulsive and labored – so we are getting a whole lot of the Felicity who came to New York for a boy. This decision is still romance based and we never did get to see a great deal of single Felicity which is a shame. I guess they figure in this genre of TV it works better if there is a love interest at all times but I think plenty of us also enjoy the “I choose me”  option.

In this time of crisis Felicity turns to several other people for support; Meghan as the one who cast the spell and who has no idea what Felicity is going on about while scoffing at the very idea she would marry Sean, Dr Pavone who tells Felicity that she needs to forget about doing the right thing and asks her what she wants and then Sally via tape. The latter makes the most sense to me as Sally is who Felicity could spill her inner most thoughts to and as we near the end of the show I am glad this device makes a reappearance. I was never that fond of the responses (sorry Janeane Garofalo, I still heart you) but I liked how it avoided the standard inner thoughts voiceover.

One thing I wondered is if Ben’s dad is going to die in this new timeline? That’s one major rupture if it happens. And it would be nice if none of the Lauren stuff happens. What I am interested in is how they are going to proceed with this whole thing and if everything ends up being worse in this version what does that mean for Felicity? I don’t want her romantic decisions to be the burden of not just her life but everyone else’s. It is fun that we get to see both versions of who she chose and in a way I wish they had gone back even further to when she chose Ben over Noel at the end of season 1, but the logistics of doing that coupled with how much distance there is from any of those stories might not have made much sense.

I’m pretty sure Felicity would wear double denim in any universe, this is sadly a mistake she is doomed to repeat.

Is Felicity stuck here or is she going to end up waking up hungover on the day of Noel’s wedding?

Felicity 4.18 double denim Julie: If ever there was a girl who needed to step back and “choose me” for a minute, it’s Felicity. The best thing that could come from this time travel thing would be for her to realize at the end of it, after first choosing Ben and then Noel, that who she really needs to choose for a while is Felicity. This is a girl who has, in the blink of an eye, gone from one guy to the next and from one college major to the next. She was staying in New York one minute, going to Arizona the next, and Palo Alto a few seconds later. What does Felicity really want? Now’s the time to figure it out.

I guess Felicity “has” to be aware that she’s time traveled, but I would’ve liked to have seen everything in the Noel Storyline play out without her knowing what will happen, if that makes sense. There’s too much “Future Felicity” meddling here. She’s too aware of the whole situation. I, like you, wonder if Ben’s dad will end up dead in this timeline. Maybe Choosing Noel is the darkest timeline. It makes me want them to do a Community-style thing where they choose every possible choice — from choosing herself to choosing that cute art guy she blew off.

I’m thinking this is all a dream and she wakes up hungover in the apartment, very Dorothy Gale, with a new outlook on life. What do you think?

Felicity 4.18 rooftopEmma: If there was to be a fifth season it should definitely be a Wild kind of situation where she takes a big long hike to get away from the dudes in her life. Even when she moves coasts things still catch up with her so maybe the wilderness is the next step. One reason why I really love this character is because she has made mistakes and messed up on more than one occasion but you’re right when you mention her motivations and what drives her sometimes gets muddled.

Okay now I definitely want an every timeline kind of situation. I do think that we might end up in the darkest timeline and I’m guessing Elena is still going to die regardless (sob). I love the road not traveled trope or the It’s a Wonderful Life playbook if you will. It’s fun and gives us a look at how things could have been. The only thing better is the whole body swap thing (and I wish they had done this with Ben and Noel at some point).

I have a feeling she will also wake up with a raging hangover and a big case of WTF, but I can’t wait to see how it pans out and how it impacts the end of the series.

Another thing that pleased me greatly was seeing Meghan in her old attire. So much leopard print bedding! Oh and Felicity’s ruffled shirt from her graduation gave me so many early 00s bad fashion flashbacks. The start of this decade really is the worst for clothes. It was also a big reminder of how close Felicity graduated to when I did (I was two years later) which is perhaps another reason why it felt so real. College really was forever ago now.

Do you have anything else to add?

Felicity 4.17 bad shirtJulie: I don’t remember a lot about my first S4 Felicity viewing (I spent most of this season POSITIVE that Meghan was going to get pregnant. I guess there’s still time), but I have a vague memory of what actually happens at the end and I think you’re right about it not ending well for Elena. Which makes sense, considering how they’ve treated her so far this season.

And now you have me longing for a S5 where they go full Family Matters and do crazy things like body swapping and robots and all kinds of nonsense. Let’s kickstart it!

I shudder to think about early aughts’ fashion making a comeback, though you know it will. That’s how this works. Even ’70s hair came back. Kind of. I’m not sure Pete Campbell’s combover will ever be in style. But, you never know.

Emma: I am so happy the ’70s have come back, I will not say the same for the aughts. It’s funny how nostalgic I am for the ’90s, but everything from my early 20s conjures up less fond fashion memories.

I would definitely contribute/co-found that kickstarter.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

13 May

Season finales, upfronts and all kinds of other on and offset shenanigans in this week’s TV Instagram roundup.

Ah, Finn Polmar. All the sighs at Matthew Goode posing it up a storm in court. Please come back next season as there is far too much unresolved tension left to be explored.

Super flexible Alan Cumming also on the set of The Good Wife shooting the finale and woah that’s a lot of bagels for the amount of people in this scene.

This is just a very cool low key shot from the Fox upfronts featuring New Girl’s Hannah Simone.

And this is a very fun dance party shot from the Fox upfronts; I’m two episodes into Empire and I am already hooked.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine ladies serving up a great mix of ‘huh?, ”what?’ and “eh?” face and like Chelsea Peretti I am drawing hearts around this photo.

The BAFTA TV awards took place last weekend and here are some post ceremony level hijinks from Ophelia Lovibond, Dawn O’Porter and Chris O’Dowd. Excellent pattern attire too.

The last episode of Orphan Black came with a whole lot of wincing at things being poked into other things they probably shouldn’t. Here is Ari Millen modeling with another version of himself.

Well this is just adorable. Peggy Olson skating forever burned into my mind. Helpful drinking tip from Elisabeth Moss too.

The You’re the Worst cast continue to be excellent at Instagram while also making the wait for season 2 seem forever away (still no date). A season 1 rewatch might be the only thing to solve this issue. Already coveting costumes.

And also this.

Taylor Schilling looks exactly how I would in this situation.
