The Hollywood Reporter’s “Women in Motion” Cannes Conversations

25 May

Before we get to my favorite time of the year (Emmy roundtables!) The Hollywood Reporter has served up an interesting conversation starter with their “Women in Motion” series at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The first one is between Salma Hayek and Matthias Schoenaerts followed by Frances McDormand. They are both fascinating chats about women on screen and the current climate talking about limitations and how they circumvent those with the projects they choose.

The chat with Salma Hayek is one I referenced when discussing Maggie Gyllenhaal’s remarks last week regarding her age (this story is both a total “of course” moment and shocking all at once). Hayek mentions some equally ‘holy shit’ and sadly not surprising comments she has received about her accent and appearance. She also discusses how she got Ugly Betty picked up in her role as producer and what her theory is to get executives to pay attention (the short answer is money but you should watch the whole thing to get Hayek’s take on it all).

Becoming a producer is also one route Frances McDormand has taken with the incredible HBO mini-series Olive Kitteridge (which she also played the titular role in) as her first producing credit. McDormand talks about this process and one thing they tried to get her character Olive to do. Money is also a big topic of discussion here too and for McDormand she has found that cable networks are where these kinds of projects are getting made.

If you have the time to watch both in full then it is totally worth it for so many reasons. But especially if you like hearing smart women talking candidly about their experiences in the entertainment industry. McDormand also dives into the box office debate regarding Pitch Perfect 2 and Mad Max: Fury Road which is also excellent. Just picture me drawing hearts around Salma Hayek and Frances McDormand.

Mindy Kaling’s Amazing Cannes Film Festival Fashion Parade

21 May

Mindy Kaling is a regular TV Ate My Wardrobe style fixture for both her on and off screen attire (and The Mindy Project will return) so Kaling’s recent overseas adventure has made me all a fashion fluster. This week Kaling has been showcasing her sartorial flare at the Cannes Film Festival in a variety of daytime pretty and stunning evening frocks documenting all these wardrobe changes on Instagram.

Appearing as the voice of Disgust, Kaling has been promoting the new Pixar movie Inside Out along with former Office co-star Phyllis Smith and Amy Poehler; the film has been getting a tremendous reception with plenty of tear inducing moments (I am so screwed if recent reactions are anything to go by).

Inside OutI love this photo so much with Poehler and Smith going for striking patterns while Kaling opts for a Roksanda Ilincic color block sleeve dress.

The detail is in the accessories with a fantastic Les Petits Joueurs clutch and Kimberly McDonald jewelry.

And for some close up Poehler/Kaling giving good sunglasses face (with a surprise appearance from John Lasseter).

Same day and a quick change as the ladies are joined by their Inside Out co-star Lewis Black all wearing 3D glasses to match the color of their character. More bold choices across the board embracing the sunny climate with Kaling killing it in matching Alexander McQueen flower collage jacquard skirt and crop top.

Inside Out CannesFor the big evening event Mindy opts for someone who knows her very well in custom Salavador Perez. Perez is the costume designer on The Mindy Project and he has created several other beautiful gowns in the past for these big events; it is clear why she trusts him.

Mindy KalingSimple, elegant and striking; working bold color blocking in a way her earlier dress choice hinted at.

Continuing fun fashion choices the following day in a floral mesh Sachin & Babi Noir F/W15 frock. Later on Kaling switched out her heels for Cons (as you can see in the video below maybe as a nod to Emily Blunt’s comments on the whole Cannes shoe controversy).

And finally while Kaling has generally been playing in the red/pink/purple wheelhouse she ends things with jeans, black top and a splash of yellow in Tory Burch doing the cool chic jacket slung over her shoulders thing. The Edie Parker clutch from earlier in the day also works wonders.

Rounding this all off with the aforementioned Cons and a chat via The Hollywood Reporter about why you shouldn’t try and erase things from your past (you might end up in a sticky Back to the Future situation). Amy Poehler’s glasses are also excellent, as is her new hair color. Basically this has been a very good Cannes for Inside Out and its cast.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

15 May

An upfronts heavy “Out of the Box” continuing the delightful patterned frock trend with a dash of Cannes in the mix because I don’t want to deny anyone a good dress twirl.

LupitaLet’s kick things off with this stunning Lupita Nyong’o moment at Cannes in green pleated Gucci and it is giving me so many 2014 Oscar feelings. I cannot wait for the Star Wars press tour.

Gillian AndersonAnother thing to get excited about is the return of The X-Files (which now has a premiere date – January 24) and even though I’m not entirely sure how I feel about a blonde Scully as her red hair is very much part of her signature look, I do approve of Gillian Anderson’s funky dress at this event.

Nasim PedradLike jumpsuits and leather jackets, leopard print appears on my ‘one day I will try this’ list and Nasim Pedrad is selling the virtues of this style choice rather well at the Fox upfront. Excellent clutch choice too.

Hannah SimoneWhile I’m not crazy about the shoulder cutouts (and I prefer Gillian Jacobs sleeveless version at the Community TCA panel), Hannah Simone is working this Tanya Taylor frock. Belting and lip color get the accessories and makeup bonus points.

Stephanie BeatrizTaking a brief pretty dress pause with Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Stephanie Beatriz and yes I bemoaned ruffled shirts just yesterday, but a girl is allowed to change her mind especially when it is paired with killer black pants and a gold blazer.

Aja Naomi King and Samira WileyAja Naomi King and Samira Wiley spring dress it up a storm at the Entertainment Weekly and People upfronts party; very much feeling Wiley’s iridescent and angular clutch.

Caterina ScorsoneMore fun florals and Caterina Scorsone’s red rose dress is a delight at the ABC upfront event.

Martha PlimptonLiving the polka dot dream! I love everything about Martha Plimpton’s classic 50s influence outfit.

Darby StanchfieldA simple chic black dress for Darby Stanchfield and the shoes and hair are where things get interesting. Over on Stanchfield’s Instagram she gives a detailed look at this super intricate hair style. Not one to try by yourself perhaps.

Victor GarberSpy Daddy! Victor Garber is one of the dapper dudes on the CW at the moment. I am very excited to see him on Legends of Tomorrow. Nice pocket square.

Stephen Amell, Ian Somerhalder , Grant GustinMore handsome dudes being handsome in suits (Grant Gustin’s takes the prize here for me). Excellent photobombing work from Aisha Tyler too.

Gina RodriguezThis also looks like it would be super fun to twirl in and Gina Rodriguez pairs a simple white tee with a stunning floal skirt at the CW upfront presentation.
