The Wish List: Joan Watson’s Zara Outfits on Elementary

14 Apr

Joan Watson’s wardrobe is full of stunning outfits on Elementary and this character has featured multiple times on The Wish List. The most recent entry was this incredible Victoria Beckham ensemble which practically had me drooling over my keyboard while I wrote about it. Joan’s costuming tends to come from high end stores and there is an aspirational quality to these outfits. There is not an expectation that Joan will wear pieces that fall into what I would call affordable and I don’t expect to watch Elementary and think I could pop online and buy whatever she is wearing. In recent episodes however, Joan has worn several items from Zara and this store does fall into my budget range.

Other Wish Lists have covered this notion of characters wearing clothes which don’t make you weep when you see the price tag with Jane the Virgin doing an excellent job of mixing designer with lower cost items and it is refreshing when this is the case.

In last week’s Elementary “One Watson, One Holmes” Joan wore a couple of printed Zara delights. First a mixed fabric top sticking to her general muted color palette.

Elementary 3.19 topLater when she decided to actively hang out with her friends instead of crying off with excuses she went fancier in a floral printed frock with the all important pocket detail. The coat Joan is wearing has appeared in previous episodes and fits into the higher end bracket (a fancy coat is an investment piece and the brr cold weather we have seen on Elementary this season shows how vital good outerwear is even if the price makes my eyes bulge cartoon style).

Elementary 3.19 dressAnd here is a closer look at this beautiful dress and one which is perfect for the changing season.

Zara dressZara has been on trend for Joan and in the previous episode “The View from Olympus” she wore a matching patterned top and skirt; it is sadly no longer available in stores although it might be the kind of thing which will pop on eBay.

The Wish List: Xo’s Pajamas on Jane the Virgin

7 Apr

Bedwear has been a big fixture on The Wish List recently and there are plenty of characters with excellent pajama taste. Last time I wrote about Jane the Virgin I mentioned how refreshing it is to see a character wear clothes which line up with their financial situation. All too often you will see shows dressing a character in items that far exceed their economic status and costume designer Rachel Sage Kunin is doing a fantastic job of blending affordable with designer. Yes the clothes are pretty, but you can also get nice things for under $100. Case in point from this week’s episode comes courtesy of Xo in pajamas from Jane’s favorite store.

Jane the Virgin - Xo pajamasIt is a super cute Gilligan & O’Malley set from Target and ideal for the switch to warmer weather bed attire. And they come in a range of colors/patterns; I’m pretty sure this floral set is calling out to me. At $19.99 they are a steal. But be warned; this episode made me full on blub and I heart the Villanueva women so hard.

The Wish List: Joan Watson’s Water Color Stunner

14 Mar

Coveting Joan Watson’s Elementary wardrobe occurs often with her incredible mix of silk prints, shift dresses, a-line skirts and one of the strongest boot collections on television. Even Sherlock has got in on the Joan style game with his pretty much perfect outfit gift a few episodes ago. Joan’s clothing palette generally hovers within the neutral circle of white, black and grey; color isn’t entirely absent but her power move tends to be through pattern. In “T-Bone and the Iceman” Joan switches things up with a stunning ensemble bringing in bold elements of color and print.

elementary 3.17 Joan and sherlockA slightly more tailored approach and Joan tends to favor the oversized approach; this outfit is not the best for the messier end of detective work, but she has a good excuse for being this put together as she has come from an awkward lunch with her mother at a fancy restaurant. What I really love about the water color element of this floral print is that it looks slightly different in every shot we see it in.

Elementary 3.17 JoanIt is more of a swirly blur when she is sitting down and matches her anxiety at the difficult conversation she is about to have with her mother regarding her possibly deteriorating mental health. And while I know the snow must be an absolute pain to shoot in, it does also help create incredible vistas such as this one.

elementary 3.17 Joan restaurantWhat this outfit does is make Joan the focal point whether she is in the dark station or in the icy looking (and feeling after her mother ditches her) riverside restaurant location.

Victoria Beckham contrast shirt dress

The Victoria Beckham contrast shirt dress appears to be two separates when it is in fact one combing a silk shirt with a quilted jacquard skirt. Perfect for all those awkward dinners and crime solving deliberations. Joan even throws in a trip to the morgue, but I would maybe advise against that. Or you could even go the Amy Poehler route and wear it to Trinity College in Dublin to receive a Gold Medal of Honorary Patronage from the University’s Philosophy Society. Either way this dress is on the Ultimate Wish List.

The Wish List: Mimi-Rose’s Pajamas and Khaki Jacket on Girls

10 Mar

When Girls shot its fourth season over last summer it became clear that Gillian Jacobs would be playing a love interest of Adam’s and we were left pondering how/why Hannah and Adam would implode. The pap shots showed Jacobs wearing what first appeared to be a pair of hospital scrubs with a khaki paint splattered jacket over the top while holding a bouquet of flowers. Was she just getting home from the night shift? On closer inspection the scrubs are in fact pajamas and Gillian Jacobs is definitely not playing a medical professional on the show.

Instead Mimi-Rose is an artist as the paint splatter might suggest, but nope that was already part of the Zara jacket – thanks to Girls costume designer Jenn Rogien for answering this mystery on Twitter – and it’s part of this well crafted minimalist look for Mimi-Rose.

Girls Mimi RoseThis jacket makes a repeat appearance in the following episode “Ask Me My Name” pairing it once again with pale blue (of the double denim variety) and shows reusing pieces in the same way a person would in real life always makes me more thrilled than I probably should be.

Girls ask me my nameAlas the Zara jacket is no longer available – these episodes did shoot back in June so it is not surprising – but there are some on eBay. In better news Mimi-Rose’s classic J Crew pajama set is still on sale for all your comfy bedtime/flower shopping needs.

The Wish List: Leslie Knope’s Blouse from the Parks and Recreation Series Finale

25 Feb

Find your team and get to work! April Ludgate was the focus of the TV Ate My Wardrobe Parks and Recreation goodbye for both her style influence and how the show managed to capture the anxiety of not knowing what you want to be/do so brilliantly through this character. Parks is all about the team so while April is our style icon, it is perhaps fitting that the leader of the team gets the Wish List costuming honor from the series finale.*

*Please be aware that as I write this the screen is still blurry from the mess these last two episodes have made me.

Throughout the seasons Leslie’s look has got more polished and her blouse collection cannot be rivaled. Floral prints are a repeated motif and this is something we see in the finale; however it is the striking black and white blouse which makes our list.

Parks and RecreationIt mirrors one of our favorite current trends with the lady tux and from a distance the black trim has that effect. The ‘Quiana’ blouse is by Diane von Furstenberg and I would very much like it in my life. And here is a closer look (albeit through a window shot):

Leslie Knope

And here is one last April Ludgate outfit to covet for good measure:

April Ludgate Parks and Rec finaleIn the future there will be more sweaters underneath dresses – I kind of like how the future costuming is pretty similar to the clothes of now – and this green dress is T by Alexander Wang. Digging the specs too.

And to round things off how about a song to carry on the Parks related tears and The Gabe Dixon Band’s “All Will Be Well,” which was used during the montage sequence as Andy and April drove to the Grand Canyon in the season 4 episode “End of the World.”

Alice + Olivia NYFW Wish List and Style Highs

17 Feb

Taking a break from Fantasy Costuming various shows with a brand that has appeared on New Girl, The Mindy ProjectParks and Recreation and How to Get Away with Murder; Alice + Olivia has the cutest sweaters. This collection was about a lot more than knitwear with designer Stacey Bendet striking a balance between late 60s/early 70s boho and rocker; a strong theme for this NYFW and one discussed yesterday with our Red Valentino Sally Draper Fantasy Costuming.

This post is a mixture of looks from the show and the stars in attendance (some are wearing items available from Alice + Olivia at the moment). Okay there might be some suggestions of what shows some of the pieces should appear on/who should wear them; it is hard to resist the urge to Fantasy Costume.

First up Fall 2015 items to covet:

Alice + OliviaIf you are a regular TV Ate My Wardrobe reader you will know by now that I have very strong feelings about lady tuxes and the current menswear trend. So it might not be too surprising that this simple and sophisticated take on this theme is top of the list. Keri Russell sometimes leans towards this style on the red carpet and even though it is not vintage the pants have a hint of wide legged Elizabeth Jennings about them.

Below are several more outfits from the collection to drool over with pattern and texture reigning supreme – click on the image for a closer look. Jenny Slate will be glad to see the turtleneck is making big waves this NYFW and the first dress in the collection below has a hint of Joan Watson about it.

And now for a few looks from those at the show.

Kate NashSinger Kate Nash went for bold color and pattern in a stunning multicolored ‘Bryn’ skirt pairing it with a very cute zebra sweater.

Sarah Silverman A&OSarah Silverman put a bird on it and makeup artist Tina Turnbow shared this beautiful close up getting ready shot.

Abbi and Ilana at A+OHopefully Ilana Glazer will fare better in white than when her Broad City character last wore something similar to this. Abbi Jacobson’s embellished bird jacket is incredible and she adds an extra pop of color with blue stilettos.

Ella CatliffFashion blogger and model Ella Catliff beats the New York cold with stylish layering including the ‘Shih’ collarless coat and pairing tights with these wedges means no freezing toes in the name of fashion.

The Wish List: A Gift for Joan on Elementary – Breakfast and Couture

6 Feb

Sherlock tends to favor an abrupt awakening for Joan on Elementary, however when she stayed over at the Brownstone in this week’s episode “Hemlock” he went with a far more pleasant approach including breakfast in bed, a new pair of boots and a fantastic day dress.

Elementary Joan in bedThis definitely makes up for pointing out how little she feels for current beau Andrew and the fancy outfit she was wearing the previous night might not be the best for day detective work. Sherlock gets major points for this and as I mentioned on Twitter this looks like the point where shooting in New York got particularly cold as super warm (and stylish) coats, gloves and knitted hats are on display – my current winter hat of choice looks a lot like the one Joan is wearing below – are all part of Joan’s costuming so those boots are a must.

Elementary beanieI also like to think she is wearing something of Sherlock’s in bed even though I can’t imagine him with a ratty bed tee collection.

So what about the dress in question? Sherlock didn’t scrimp as the herringbone silk stripe dress is from Edun and sticks to Joan’s signature slightly oversized style; it makes sense with his observation skills that Sherlock would nail this clothing gift.

Elementary Joan dressWhile I am enjoying Joan and Sherlock living apart at the moment and how this has impacts their relationship dynamic allowing both of them to grow; if the treats of breakfast food and clothes were to be more than just a one off I can understand why Joan might want to move back in. Plus after what transpires at the end of “Hemlock” the Brownstone might be the safest place for Joan right now.

The Wish List: April Ludgate’s Prints, Patterns and Stripes

28 Jan

Parks and Recreation is coming to an end (*sob*) and there is a lot I’m going to miss about the show including how it can make me laugh and cry in equal measure; sometimes as with last week’s episode both at the same time. TV Ate My Wardrobe was in part created as a result of how often I would comment on April Ludgate’s costuming and for that I am grateful, but also sad as there is only a limited amount of outfits to covet and I still have yet to find the elusive perfect mustard yellow hoodie.

Multiple outfits standout from this week’s double bill with bold prints on display throughout and several Tory Burch pieces.

April 7.05First up from “Gryzzlbox” is this floral beauty (disdainful scowl not included, but can be perfected) from Cooper & Ella.

April Ludgate 4.05Also from “Gryzzlbox” is this striped and dotty pattern clashing dream that I love as much as Craig’s lists (“Watermelon martinis, exposed brick, Keri Russell’s hair”) with Band of Outsiders on top and Tory Burch ‘Klarissa’ skirt.

April 7.06 Parks and RecIn the second of the Parks double bill – two episodes is lovely each week but it means the end is nigh – April’s pattern top glory continues with this Opening Ceremony multicolor print tee. Plus bonus Leslie floral goodness in you guessed it, Tory Burch.

April 7.06And one final April Ludgate ensemble and while it’s not clear from the shot above this is a polka dot doozy from Tory Burch. The skirt it is paired with over at Farfetch looks a whole lot like the leather pleated one Aubrey Plaza wore and featured on TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Best of 2014 list. An outfit to make my ultimate covet board:

Leather pleatsExpect more April Ludgate and Parks and Recreation musings before the end of the season.

The Wish List: Jane’s Summer Dress on Jane the Virgin

21 Jan

It is far from summer dress weather and the grey sky that is my current view is rather uninviting; however I finally caught up on Jane the Virgin which has charming and a generally sunny disposition while set in an almost always warm climate (with the occasional hurricane). The costuming is a whole lot of flirty frocks, shorts, tanks and vest tops all ideal for Long Beach. Jane’s attire tends to be on the more relaxed side although her teaching placement requires a less casual approach to her dress choices. Sometimes this goes array as was the case when she fell asleep in her clubbing outfit (which became almost school appropriate with the addition of a cardigan).

Chapter SixThe dress I want to talk about (and add to my own collection) appears in Chapter Six and falls into Jane’s work wear category. It’s floral and cute, plus it has pockets which is what I want from a dress. And guess what? It is also super affordable! H&M is where you can find this dress and it makes me so happy to see Jane wear clothes that make sense for her budget. And even though this is a summer wear for Jane, a pair of tights, cute ankle boots and a cardigan could easily turn it into a winter floral frock. The pink belt is a good extra touch and there are plenty of color belts that would work.

H&MBy doing these wish lists I often marvel at the cost of some character’s clothing collections and it doesn’t always make the most amount of sense considering their job or lifestyle – even Olivia Pope with her two $2000 cardigans seems like a stretch. In Chapter Six Jane’s favorite store Target even gets in on the multifloral dress action. This isn’t to say that Jane doesn’t wear more splurge heavy clothes as in the same episode she’s wearing a Joie romper that was originally priced at just over $300, but hey it is a start.

While thinking about the cost of my closet I know I have a couple of more expensive pieces (coats, dresses and shoes mostly) with the majority coming from stores at price points like H&M or Uniqlo and it is encouraging to see costume designers utilizing brands like these when a character doesn’t have an endless stream of disposable income.

The Wish List: Gina’s Wolfie Hat on Brooklyn Nine-Nine

6 Jan

The cold weather continues and Gina from Brooklyn Nine-Nine has an excellent scarf/hat/glove solution as seen on the most recent episode “Beach House.” Gina is a TV Ate My Wardrobe sweater and all round everything favorite; I think that her wolfie obsession might have inadvertently led to my yelling out “Wolfie!” each time one of the Game of Thrones direwolves appears on screen. So imagine my pure joy when I saw what Gina was wearing for the windy winter beach walk. First in the background:

Gina Wolfie hatFollowed by a closer more triumphant shot:

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Beach House GinaThe Grey Wolf Spirithood is available from SpiritHoods (the company first appeared on Shark Tank) and no real wolves were harmed in the making of this product (it is faux fur). In fact 10% of net profits are donated to help endangered species. There is more to this than just a hat/scarf/glove combo as it also has a nifty zip pocket so you can keep your phone close by for those all important Kwazy Cupcakes games (which is also now available!).

This is pretty much the most Gina costume I have seen on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and it is the perfect way to kick off the Wish List in 2015.

And the site also has this full Wolfie like jacket and now I need to see Gina in it:
