Best of the 2016 Tony Awards Red Carpet Part 2

13 Jun

More from the 2016 Tony Awards red carpet and we’ve got dramatic satin ensembles, some dresses I keep changing my mind about and an excellent assist from the wind on the posing stakes.

For more check out Part 1Danai GuriraDanai Gurira is a TV Ate My Wardrobe regular and she did not disappoint in bold yellow Rosie Assoulin.Danielle BrooksSatin is tricksy because creases, but Danielle Brooks slays in Derek Lam and I just remembered that OITNB is back this week! Claire DanesMore midnight blue and a Narciso Rodriguez dress that is very 90s; throw on a plaid shirt and Claire Danes is more than halfway to Angela Chase.Phillipa SooThe windy evening gives Hamilton star Phillipa Soo an extra dramatic walking and posing boost in a Prabal Gurung frock which is just the right side of bridal. Mixing textures is definitely a big look of the night.Sara BareillesFrom bridal to bridesmaid, which sounds like it isn’t a good thing; however I think Sara Bareilles looks fantastic in an ethereal Gomez Gracia frock with a metallic bodice. Waitress is on the list of things I want to see on my New York trip in the fall. You can watch the cast performance here.Jane KrakowskiEntering the red zone with Jane Krakowski in custom Michael Kors and another triumph on the texture front with a hint of sparkle.Keri RussellI’ve gone back and forth so many times on Keri Russell’s Monique Lhuillier crimson dress and I’ve come to the very surprising conclusion that it would work better as a jumpsuit (something I have never said before).

Front split dresses always looks somewhat awkward to me, but they were one of the style repeats from this red carpet (see also Michelle Williams). Russell only gave birth last month and she looks amazing regardless of my slight issues with the dress style. Plus, bonus red lipstick points.Rose Byrne and Bobby CannavaleFave couple alert and Rose Byrne is also doing the front split thing in red sequin Thakoon. Bobby Cannavale wears a silver ribbon (as did many others) as a way to acknowledge the Pulse shooting victims and the show also opened with a tribute to the gay club victims of this still hard to fathom extreme act of violence. Cate BlanchettAnother dress I found myself going back and forth on and I suspect that Cate Blanchett’s inherent ability to make anything work is why I am drawn to her in this patchwork Louis Vuitton frock. Blanchett also wears a silver ribbon as a show of support to the Pulse victims.

Best of the 2016 Tony Awards Red Carpet Part 1

13 Jun

The 2016 Tony Awards celebrated all things Broadway last night in New York City* and this red carpet event has become one of my favorites. Mixing bold color with pattern was a big trend and Part 1 of this round-up is awash with dresses (and suits) of this kind.

*While also touching upon the horrific violence and mass murder at a gay club in Orlando in the early hours of Sunday morning. Writing about fashion after such an event always feels somewhat glib, but the Tonys and musical theater has such strong ties to the LGBT community and this celebration shows the kind of inclusivity that theater offers.

For a complete list of all Tony Award winners click here.Michelle Williams and Busy PhilippsBusy Philipps as Michelle Williams’ awards show date is one of my favorite traditions – ticks all those IRL bestie boxes- and both look stunning. Michelle Williams is wearing Louis Vuitton (of course) and her whole makeup/hair styling is very much like this 2013 campaign. As my own personal hair inspiration I am thrilled to see Williams going shorter again.

There’s a whole lot of different florals going as you will see when you scroll and I love Philipps’ take in a strapless pink Ingie Paris gown. Busy Philipps also has an Olympia Le-Tan book clutch, which is on my ultimate list. Busy has Jane Eyre (can also see it here); I would love The Bell Jar.Lupita Nyong'oAnother awards show red carpet triumph for Lupita Nyongo’o in a colorful Hugo Boss gown. Designer Jason Wu explained to Vogue that the look of the dress was inspired by Tetris; the sequins and 3-D textural effect is incredible.Lin-Manuel Miranda and Vanessa NadalAn emotional night was made even more so when Lin-Manuel Miranda delivered a sonnet that he had written yesterday in reaction to the senseless violence in Orlando.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FnAvhvZXdo

Part of the sonnet was also dedicated to his wife Vanessa Nadal and her bespoke Edie Parker Hamilton clutch is as delightful as her beautiful paint splattered looking frock, which I love.Renee Elise GoldsberryKeeping on the Hamilton track and Tony winner Renée Elise Goldsberry pairs two of the night’s big trends – yellow and botanicals – with great success in Oscar de la Renta. Plus pockets. Lucy LiuMore pale yellow delights and I wonder Alicia Vikander’s Louis Vuitton Oscar dress has led to a bump in this shade (a dress I liked, but didn’t love). I prefer both Goldsberry’s and Lucy Liu’s Zuhair Murad take on this yellow tone and the floral detail here also adds to the dreamy texture.Cynthia ErivoCynthia Erivo won for The Color Purple and crushed it on the red carpet in a show stopping Roberto Cavalli gown. There is a lot of dress to work with and Erivo doesn’t let it overwhelm her. Also a good reminder that this Tony actress roundtable is every 100 emoji worth of your time.Daveed DiggsDaveed Diggs was another well deserving Hamilton winner and he took the guys suit game up a notch in Commes des Garcons. This patchwork/mixed texture choice is pattern clashing at its height and I think he looks great in a very hard to pull off lookJoan SmallsIn the best dress worn by a supermodel category Joan Smalls takes the prize in sparkly Altuzarra.Laura BenantiMore bold florals from Oscar de la Renta from nominee Laura Benanti and the rose bush backdrop is working wonders with all of these colorful frocks.Sophie OkonedoRounding off Part 1 with another botanical stunner with Sophie Okonedo in Zac Posen combining long sleeves with strapless and a really interesting silhouette.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

10 Jun

After a brief period of minimal red carpet events it is suddenly all happening again including the CFDA Awards and plenty of Emmy related events with roundtables, screenings and general awards chat. Plus, magazine covers!

Some shows in contention are also promoting their upcoming seasons – that really is some A+ plus timing – and there are lots of super summery looks for you to enjoy this week including a whole array of patterned frocks, sunglasses and light suits. Kerry Washington, Aziz AnsariEverything about this cover is pure delight and Kerry Washington’s Dolce & Gabbana frock is giving off so many European summer vacation vibes; so much so that I’m writing this in the morning and yet I’m hankering for a patio, the biggest selection of bread and cheeses and an Olivia Pope size glass of wine.

Aziz Ansari as ever looks great in a suit and you can watch their whole Actors on Actors chat here.Kate McKinnonLadysuit Alert! The cast of the new Ghostbusters get their own covers for the Elle ‘Women in Comedy’ issue and they are all pure joy with Kate McKinnon just edging out in the front as my favorite.

My one caveat (and it is something Elle has previously been guilty of) is the Melissa McCarthy choice as her full body shot is so great and I don’t know why they opted for the close up (well I do know why *sighs*). As Samantha Powell points out the black dress photo looks like it was part of the cover set.Lauren LapkusLauren Lapkus crushing it in Alice + Olivia at the Elle ‘Women in Comedy’ celebration and if I had any more weddings to go to this summer (other than my own) then this would be ideal guest attire. Bobby Cannavale, Rose Byrne, Elisabeth Olsen, Michael B. JordanFollowing the Fug Girls mantra that ‘everybody looks hotter in sunglasses’ and also in a week where I took a deep dive into this accessory choice in my TV and Style column over at The Observer; this group shot at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic is most welcome.

This event always brings out excellent summer style and from Elizabeth Olsen’s shorts take on a ladysuit to Michael B. Jordan’s no tie polka dot look they are oozing sunshine cool. TV Ate My Wardrobe couple fave Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale also deliver on the polo watching front in summer frocks and a pink shirt seems like a ubiquitous choice for an occasion like this.Mr RobotMr Robot isn’t back until next month (Wednesday, July 13) so I think we can expect to see a lot more of this cast in the coming weeks and this is only a good thing.

Rami Malek and Christian Slater have shown on numerous occasions that they can mix their red carpet style up from casual to fancy pants with Rami throwing his hat into the floral trend at the Television Academy 70th Anniversary celebration. We’ve seen a version of Portia Doubleday’s Philosophy dress on Sarah Paulson a couple of months ago and I much prefer this plunging neckline take and Carly Chaikin’s giving lots of chill vibes in RVNNYC.Shiri ApplebyAny regular readers will know how happy I am to have UnREAL back and this has been a super fun press tour (although the premiere viewing numbers are less than encouraging).

The premiere took a deep dive back into the dark and twisted world of reality TV and I can’t see Rachel wearing anything as cute as Shiri Appleby’s Kayat floral mini with super poofy sleeves any time soon. Hot pink Stuart Weitzman sandals really set the whole look off.Scott SpeedmanWelcome back to TV Scott Speedman and to the promo train with Animal Kingdom (premieres Tuesday, June 14 on TNT). Okay so this suit is a little on the crinkled front, but I’m willing to forgive that for Ben Covington related reasons and it is very much keeping with the summer vibe.

Also here is Speedman on The Late Show being totally charming.

Happy Friday!

Variety Actors on Actors or Pick Your Dream Dinner Date (Part 2)

9 Jun

The Hollywood Reporter has their award season roundtables gathering a group of actors/writers/showrunners who are at the top of their game and over at Variety they do things one-on-one getting the actors to interview other actors. Last year I referred to this setup as picking your dream dinner dates and that still stands with the line-up this year.

So far only a handful of the full videos are available on YouTube (you can find them all on Variety) and they are ideal viewing if you are suffering from show withdrawal or if like me you just love this time of year when TV awards chat is in full focus. Courtney B. Vance and Tracee Ellis RossFirst up we have Courtney B. Vance and Tracee Ellis Ross in this almost 40-minute extravaganza discussing everything from college, to the OJ Simpson trial and discussions of race on Black-ish.

And in people I didn’t know went to high school together; Rami Malek and Kirsten Dunst. Also love that Kirsten Dunst would listen to Dolly Parton’s “Here I Am” before scenes in which Peggy was particularly feeling herself.

Talking about producing material and creating their own work with Master of None and Confirmation. Plus audition chat and now I’m left wondering which two shows Kerry Washington got fired off for the horrific reason of not sounding ‘urban’ enough. Is one of them Wonderfalls? On a fashion note I have already mentioned how much I love Kerry Washington’s dress and I will be doing so again.

Jay Duplass tells a very funny story about having more sexual partners on screen in one season of Transparent than he has in his whole life and Emilia Clarke reveals why she ended up dancing in her Game of Thrones audition (always blame Diet Coke).

And finally from two Ryan Murphy projects we have Jamie Lee Curtis and Lady Gaga with Lady Gaga explaining how she got on board the American Horror Story train (she called him) and where Gaga ends and Stephanie begins. Turns out that Robert Durst is the surprising influence for Gaga’s performance on AHS.

It is not just one on one interviews Variety are gifting us this award season and you can watch a supporting actor roundtable featuring Regina King, Jonathan Banks, Miranda Otto, Anthony Mackie, Christian Slater and Maggie Siff here.

Updated to add this super delightful chat between Sam Heughan and Krysten Ritter. Heughan talks about the Outlander costumes and how helpful they are, which leads to Krysten Ritter breaking down Jessica’s unchanging wardrobe. They win my heart in an instant.

Check back for more Emmy chat here soon.

The Americans 4.13 “Persona Non Grata” Review: Auspicious Beginnings

9 Jun

Home or the idea of returning back to Russia has been humming away in the background throughout season 4 of The Americans as the risks keeping stacking up and the chance of getting caught increases with every move. Gabriel tells Elizabeth and Philip that they have always been in danger and yet when they get this offer to return home they are both stunned into silence rather than action.

At the start of the year when Philip’s inner voice was telling him to “run, run, run” he knew this wasn’t an option because Elizabeth didn’t feel the same way and even with everything that is going on with William’s arrest, Pastor Tim and managing Paige there is still something holding them back. The Americans 4.13 Elizabeth and PhilipWe’ve found out a lot more this season about Philip and Elizabeth’s origin story; the places they grew up and the hardships they faced. Elizabeth tells Philip about her Smolensk chat with Paige and her wistful pondering about how much has changed. Philip is far less romantic about the state of home suggesting that it probably isn’t that much different from how they left it; despite this slight rebuttal it is a really nice moment between the pair as they contemplate their home that once was.

Everything about Russia in the present is an abstract to them and later on as they contemplate Gabriel’s offer they both struggle to picture their kids in the USSR, which is hardly surprising considering just how American they both are. Paige underscored a lot of the issues a couple of weeks ago when Russia was on the table with the language being a primary concern. Despite their loyalty to their country they are accustomed to this American way of life and the idea of moving is hard to fathom; what exactly will they do when they get home? The Americans 4.13 Paige and ElizabethPhilip and Elizabeth are not the only ones who the Motherland is calling back for one reason or another and they might end with Oleg and Arkady as seatmates. Oleg is choosing to return to his family because his mother is still in a bad way after the death of his brother and he is told twice in “Persona Non Grata” that he is a good son. First by Arkady, then by Tatiana. The pull of America has always been strong for Oleg and as with Philip there are certain pop culture and lifestyle aspects he is drawn to.

Unlike Philip, Oleg had a comfortable upbringing and lived in relative wealth but when he returns he will also have to find a position for himself in a place with fewer resources. Arkady’s reasons for departing are not his own and he is given 48-hours to leave thanks to what happened to Gaad. Even though there is no proof he had anything to do with the hotel room tragedy Gaad’s replacement still has the sway to get him kicked out. Perhaps we will see Oleg and Arkady working together from Russia next season. Here’s hoping as both characters are vital to the Russian portion of The Americans. The Americans 4.13 Oleg and TatianaThere is someone who will be making the trip from the Motherland to the United States as Philip’s other son Mischa is on the hunt for his American travel agent dad. We first meet Mischa locked up in an institution because he has been saying some anti-Soviet things about the war in Afghanistan; a war he fought in. Luckily for Mischa he has some powerful friends and his release is secured and he heads to his grandfather’s home.

Irina’s father has a low key looking Jason Bourne package of passports and money for him from his mother and it turns out Irina is also in prison. She ran, but they don’t know why. We learn that Mischa’s grandfather didn’t meet Philip, but he did see him with Irina once and they looked happy; this idea of auspicious beginnings runs throughout this Americans finale in a season which has been looking back and dealing with consequences.

EST has helped Philip explore his feelings about this line of work and it is worth noting that this season began with a vital moment in Philip’s journey; the explosive act of violence at the age of 10 that sent him down the path he is now on. The versions of his stories are of course edited and yet the feelings are still the same. So in the first one the bully moved away rather than “oh I killed him” and this week we see him telling the group about how much he hates his job as a travel agent, but can’t quit. The sentiment is still the same as he describes the ‘sick feeling’ in the pit of his stomach that he experiences every morning and how he has commitments and responsibilities to the people he loves. The Americans 4.13 Philip and ElizabethThe difference between most careers and the one line of work Philip has found himself in is how consuming it is; he isn’t just a KGB agent from 9-5 and this job is his entire life. It is why he married Elizabeth and had two children and his family and work are forever entwined. So while the EST coach suggests that he can quit, it is far from the simple “you ain’t that important.”

Philip also focuses on this idea of picking a job before you know who you are and while Elizabeth has remained steadfast and unquestioning of her commitment Philip has long been staring into the abyss. Gabriel notes his heart hasn’t been in it for a long time (while highlighting Elizabeth’s length of service as a way to get her to quit) and despite his reservations there is no way Philip is quitting without Elizabeth. The Americans 4.13Change and the way things can turn in an instant is something Philip has long been concerned with; when they were fighting about Paige getting pulled into this world Philip argued that something always changes and he doubles down on this sentiment here. Over the last four years we have tracked these changes with the most significant coming in the central relationship as they have fallen in love for real – or rather Elizabeth fell in love with Philip because he was already there – and the impact this has had on everything.

Their relationship is unique in this world which seems to drive everyone else into being alone; Gabriel discussed this last week with Philip and all season we have seen William watch Philip and Elizabeth with a mixture of wonder and envy. William ends up in the custody of the FBI, but before he is caught he infects himself with the Lassa virus sample that he was going to pass onto Philip. The KGB has no idea that William has sacrificed himself in this manner and the concern for the Jennings cover comes directly from William’s capture. The Americans 4.13 Stan and AderholtAs with Philip we get to hear about William’s changing opinion about the job he took on years ago; at first it was exciting and this commitment to something drove him. William also talks about being invisible and how special this made him feel at first, but his secret power became his curse.

It is a sad tale of a lonely life and this absence of closeness meant that all he had left was his commitment; this is why Gabriel knew to target this last week when he convinced him to do this one last job. The unnamed friendship William had with Philip is one he views as at a distance and that there was always a barrier between them. The Americans 4.13 WilliamLater as the oozing begins – Dylan Baker’s delivery of what will happen to him is a thing of wonder and I’m going to miss him – and William starts to slip he reveals the relationship he had long ago; that they were always fighting and how he wishes they could have been like them. In the vaguest of terms he talks about Philip and Elizabeth; “she’s pretty, he’s lucky” and how with their two kids they are living the American Dream. Will Stan equate this to the couple who have been on their radar since season 1?

For now they are safe from arrest as Elizabeth notes the lack of FBI cars when Stan finally comes home after days at work and all is as it was and yet this sleepy suburb is no longer the refuge it once was and their house looms like a warning as Philip marches Paige back home after finding out she has been smooching Matthew while Henry has been left to watch the Super Bowl by himself (making this January 22, 1984). Poor Henry. The Americans 4.13 StanIn a very awkward dad to dad moment Stan is kinda giddy about Matthew hooking up with Paige. Ew, Stan. But this shows the difference between a dad of a son and a daughter in this situation and also everything else that Philip knows so good job laughing off the father of the bride joke that Stan makes. Philip is angry at Paige because of just how complicated this whole situation is already as he forbids her from seeing Matthew. When she starts to sass back he simply tells her “you have no idea” and let’s just see what happens if he mentions the move to Russia considering the shit fit she threw last time.

Relationship wise beyond the one they have with each other Philip, Elizabeth and now to some extent Paige are likely to understand exactly what William means by the barrier he felt when he tried to reach out to people. Paige asks Elizabeth how long it was after she gave birth before she wanted people to come visit and she answers that she didn’t really have any friends. Bleak.

The same can be said for now and even the friend she made this season was built on a foundation of lies and torn down by deception. I’m still super bummed out about Young Hee. The same goes for Philip as Stan might be his BFF on the surface, but he is always holding back and withholding and he sure does not want Stan’s son to date his daughter. For reasons. Paige talks to Matthew about trust and this idea that parents are just people and here she is also unable to completely be herself. The same goes for when she held Pastor Tim and Alice’s baby as her smile soon shifted to sadness as the strains of Leonard Cohen’s “Who by Fire?” plays. The Americans 4.13 Paige and babyThe season ends not so much on a cliffhanger, but with this feeling that everything is somehow going to get harder. There is no vacation coming the Jennings way and even if they keep up appearances the net is closing in. Dealing with consequences both on a grand scale and the personal toll has made this season the best The Americans has done yet and with every move the knots in my stomach get even tighter; the following of William in tandem with Philip going to his drop location involved very little action, but it is sequences like that that elevate this from other spy shows.

Everything that has gone on in the core relationships this season including Paige’s evolution which has led to junior spy like actions – this week she also asks her mom for some self-defense lessons – has strengthened what was already incredible. Philip and Elizabeth continue to grow as a couple even when they disagree and it has been the emotional changes in Elizabeth that is the true standout for me this year. The bold moves with Martha and her devastating arc has been another high point in a season of highs.

Performances have been incredible across the board with Holly Taylor delivering wide eyed horror and confrontation in equal measure and Alison Wright giving off far than just Poor Martha as she took her fate with strength and resolve. Come Emmy nomination day I would love to hear both Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys’ names getting called out for the acting masterclass they have delivered on a weekly basis and there is so much they say even when there is no dialogue.

There are two more seasons to follow this one and it definitely feels like we are approaching the final act. And I cannot wait.

Shot(s) of the WeekThe Americans 4.13 Arkady Going for three shots this week; first up is Arkady contemplating his return home while looking up at the bust of Lenin.

Last week I mentioned how well the painting of Lenin is utilized in the Rezidentura for dramatic effect and I’m glad to see them playing on this theme with this different imposing version of Lenin. The Americans 4.13 Philip and Elizabeth bedroomMirroring the end of season 3, but Elizabeth is in the seated position and instead of contemplating a murder she has just committed as Philip did at that point they are instead weighing up their running options.

They are very much on the same page rather than at a distance with Ronald Reagan delivering a grand speech. The Americans 4.13 houseThis looks straight from a horror movie.

Disguise of the WeekThe Americans 4.13 Philip ESTA repeat of the Philip disguise which reminds me of my dad has led me to a non-disguise disguise with Philip wearing his travel agent hat and a giant name badge at EST. It was also fun hearing Elizabeth describe EST to Paige as she attempted to be non-judgmental (and failing) of her husband’s outlet.

Outfit I Would Wear in 2016The Americans 4.13 kitchen tableOne final shout out to the Coach trench Elizabeth has been sporting all season and the ultimate in the roll call of coats from this year. Also shout out to Keri Russell for wearing stiletto boots while this pregnant or any time really because while they look amazing this would be incredibly perilous if I was to wear them in any condition.

Thanks for joining me on this season 4 Americans adventure and I will be back to talk about the show later in the year.

Best of the 2016 CFDA Fashion Awards Red Carpet

7 Jun

One of the fashion industry’s biggest nights of the year took place at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City last night (Monday, 6 June) honoring designers at the CFDA Awards. The annual event celebrates the best in fashion design and there are a whole host of stars on hand to showcase their work.

Here are our favorite looks from the night and trends from the evening include all that sparkles, black and botanical prints.

For a full list of the winner head here.BeyonceBeyoncé was awarded with the Style Icon Award crushing it in super sparkly Givenchy ladysuit (cue switching out lyrics to “Formation”) and wide-brimmed hat.

Aside from a recent Elle interview Beyoncé has let her music and Instagram do the speaking for her and this speech revealed a whole lot about her family’s influence on the clothes she wears and she had this special message to the designers in the room “I want to say thank you to every designer who works tirelessly to make people think they can write their own story.”

She also gave a detailed shout out to her family and threw in a Game of Thrones reference much to my delight.

“My mother and my uncle, God rest his soul, made all of our first costumes, individually sewing hundreds of crystals and pearls, putting so much passion and love into every small detail. When I wore these clothes I felt like Khaleesi. I had an extra suit of armor. It was so much deeper than any brand name.”Abbi and IlanaI love everything about this photo of Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson presenting the Accessory Designer of the Year Award (which went to Paul Andrew) and they both look fabulous in black Rebecca Minkoff creations.Jessica ChastainJessica Chastain combining three of the trends of the evening (black, metallic, foliage) in a stunning leafy Prabal Gurung frock. Only minor quibbles; maybe needs a necklace and/or red lipstick.Gillian JacobsThrowing some bold color into the mix with Gillian Jacobs in Tanya Taylor.Samira WileySamira Wiley is a big Milly fan and so it makes sense that she wears this designer to the CFDA Awards; what a fantastic frock this is. The feathered detail really makes this dress standout. Plus, pockets!Hari NefWe’re entering the 70s influenced portion and Hari Nef works a hard to pull of ethereal Gucci number.Zosia MametThere’s something a little tarot card reader or fabulous 70s shindig about Zosia Mamet’s Maiyet look thanks to the red embellished scarf. Claire Danes and Hugh DancyGiving off relaxed couple vibes are Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy both sporting a healthy post-Memorial Day weekend glow and Danes’ Calvin Klein Collection pleated dress is understated. Well, aside from the part that looks like a button that is screaming to be pushed. Kirsten DunstGoing back to the sparkly theme with Kirsten Dunst in Rodarte and while I wish the skirt was not so sheer, the top half of this dress and those fantastic shoes are enough to get passed this nitpick. Taking the floral trend to the next level by wearing real orchids as earrings.TildaIn a surprisingly low-key look Tilda Swinton is still the ultimate cool as fuck red carpet star in Haider Ackermann sporting the black/silver trend with a flash of orange. Excellent lip color choice. UPDATE! Thanks to the Fug Girls (via Julie Klauser) it transpires that I already own the specific lip color Tilda is wearing; it’s Candy Yum Yum by MAC and it’s great.Alexander SkarsgardDoing it for the dudes in metallics is Alexander Skarsgård in a really great Tom Ford tux.Sebastian StanOh, hello. Sebastian Stan is giving off so much charm in Todd Snyder that I don’t even care he has gone sans socks.

TV Rewind: Gilmore Girls, Season 2, Episodes 1-4

6 Jun

Gilmore Girls, Episodes 2.01-2.04
“Sadie, Sadie…,” “Hammers and Veils,” “Red Light on the Wedding Night” & “The Road Trip to Harvard”
Original Air Dates: Oct. 9, 16, 23Gilmore Girls 2.04 Harvard hatsEmma: We’re back! And we’ve taken a much longer break than I intended and this has been in part to do with how busy this last month has been. But my excuses aside, I am very glad to get back to talking about all things Gilmore.

When we last talked Lorelai had been semi proposed to by Max with a buttload of flowers in a scene that if you have the sound off plays more like a horror movie than a rom com. Luke realized he had feeeeeeeeeelings for Lorelai (well, duh) and Dean and Rory declared their love for each other (snore). And we pretty much pick up the action right where we left off, which is rare for a show of this kind as they tend to do the skipping the summer to coincide with the air date.

The first episode deals with Lorelai’s proposal choice – does she want to marry Max or not? Well we know the actual answer to that by the end of episode 3, but right now she is swept up in the romance of it and getting to experience something she hasn’t necessarily considered would be something she would experience. We see her peaking at wedding magazines and the grandness of Max’s gesture also goes some way in getting her caught up in this moment.

Gilmore Girls 2.01 bridal magazinesOther big news in this episode is that Rory is in the top 3% of her class, which isn’t really a surprise but it does lead to a very awkward celebratory dinner. Rory is allowed to bring a friend and instead of making the sensible choice with the soon to be departed Lane or evening trying to make up with Paris this way, she chooses Dean. Which also makes sense seeing as they’re back together.

What this does is give an insight into the kind of father Richard maybe was when Lorelai was younger because boy does he not like Dean (I get you, Richard), but even Emily is taken back by how rude he is. So what this feels like isn’t so much a snapshot of what Richard was like when Lorelai was young, but rather a reaction to what happened with Lorelai and Christopher. And Lorelai says as much explaining that Rory is the great white hope of the Gilmore clan and Richard just had a vision of the ghost of pregnancy past. It doesn’t excuse Richard’s rudeness, but it does explain it and I love that we get to see this side of him every now and then. He’s not just the fun grandpa.

How did you feel about the season 2 premiere?
Gilmore Girls 2.01 Gilmore dinner

Julie: I do love that the show jumps right back in after the season premiere. More shows should do summer episodes, like 90210 did back in the day. Those were the best.

Since we’re in season two, it’s time for the writers to start getting deeper with the characters, and the one they start with this year is Papa Gilmore, Richard. He is such an interesting character to me. There’s a lot more nuance to him than I think we saw during season one. He’s not just the bumbling grandfather. He’s not just the mean, rich daddy. He feels like a real character who has real emotions, even if those emotions sometimes get overlooked by the women in his life, who are so deep inside their own heads that sometimes they forget about him. In a lot of ways, I think he sees Rory as a do-over, or maybe he sees her potential success as a way to make everything right. If Rory can grow up to be amazing, maybe he can finally get over Lorelai getting knocked up when she was a teenager.

But I am CERTAINLY Team Richard when it comes to dealing with Dean. He read that guy perfectly from the start. Go back to your hole, Dean.

Now, the Lane thing. I’m not sure what all this was about. Do you know? I’ll spoil it for you (because the actress coming back for the Netflix series)–Lane doesn’t stay in Korea forever. (Did you already know that? Does she come back in the first four episodes?) It’s such a weird thing and has no real repercussions. Was Keiko Agena not available for part of the season? Were they trying to write Lane out, but decided against it? They really have given Lane short shrift so far, and she was starting to take a back seat to Paris at this point, so I’m just wondering.Gilmore Girls 2.01 Richard and EmilyEmma: I agree very much on the Richard thing and it is interesting to see how both Emily and Richard view Rory as their second chance. This is a lot of pressure to put on a teenage girl, but it is natural that they will see this as their time to correct their parenting mistakes too. And I agree with being Team Richard on the Dean front and in the next episode Dean gets annoyed at Rory because she wants to concentrate on her extracurricular activity to help get into Harvard and not hang out with him. I would much rather build houses with an angry Paris (who is still upset about the whole Tristan stuff).

Dean is the worst.

And Lane returns in episode 4 and it transpires that they bought her an open ended ticket to save money as they didn’t know exactly which day she would be back. Which is what I figured and for someone so smart Lane’s fears that they were sending her to Korea seemed way over the top. But hey at least she got some good bootlegs out of it. But you’re right that it does seem a little out of nowhere.

At the end of the first episode Emily finds out via an invite from Sookie to the engagement party/wedding shower that Lorelai is engaged and it goes down as well as expecting and the tears in Emily’s eyes shows exactly how hurt she is by hearing about it second hand. What I love about this relationship is that it could easily feel like they are having the exact same fight on repeat, but it never does and they somehow make each new deep cut as raw and different as the one before it.

Gilmore Girls 2.02 Lorelai, Max and EmilyHere it feels like Emily maybe viewed their relationship as much stronger than it used to be, which is true and yet there is still a rift in how much Lorelai thinks she can tell her mother. When Lorelai does tell her in “Hammers and Veils” Lorelai takes Emily’s reaction of indifference about seeing if they’re free that weekend as confirming her worst fear. Instead this is Emily acting out about being told way after everyone else. This is meant to be a huge moment in a mother/daughter relationship and all it does here is bring out the worst in both of them. Emily is mean and Lorelai reacts with anger and it takes a huge blowup fight like this for either of them to admit exactly how they feel. For how good the Gilmore’s are at talking they are also terrible at explaining their actual feelings.

Lorelai wanted to feel good about this engagement and it is why she didn’t tell her mother as Emily’s words have a huge impact no matter how much Lorelai pretends otherwise. Which is why I am so glad they have the veil trying on moment, which includes a very Emily criticism swiftly followed by the touching tiara offer. Yes I cried because I always do with this pair.

What did you make of this new falling out/making up between Emily and Lorelai?

Gilmore Girls 2.01 Lane

Julie: Yeah, the Lane thing was too short to be any big deal. It was weird. It’s not like we would’ve noticed if Lane were to have not been in two episodes. That’s not out of the ordinary for Gilmore Girls. Poor Lane. She deserves better. Like, maybe she should’ve been building houses with Rory and Paris! (And talking to cute Henry.)

As Lainey says, “Girl shit is the best shit,” and that’s what we get a lot of between Lorelai and her mother. But all of this goes so deep. I think there are several levels to Lorelai not telling her mom about her engagement — 1) The most basic, she has been estranged from her family for so long, they are not her first stop with good news. It was an honest oversight. 2) She subconsciously wanted to stick it to her mother, to make her feel bad, to reinforce that she and Emily are not close. 3) She knows her mom is a walking truth bomb, and she figured Emily would question her motives for marrying Max. I think it’s all of those things. There is so much depth to this relationship.

I pin most of the blame on Lorelai here. It would’ve have been very easy to just tell her mother about the engagement, and it would’ve saved everyone a lot of pain and trouble. Then, on a whole other level, by not telling her mom, Lorelai was able to start planning her wedding without her mother’s interference, which is not nothing. So messy! Which is why the moments of affection are so gut-wrenching.

Speaking of second thoughts about Max…”Red Light on the Wedding Night.” Did you see this coming?Gilmore Girls 2.03 Rory, Lorelai, Max

Emma: It was definitely an easily avoidable situation and I agree that the ball was very much in Lorelai’s court and with every step forward they take something else causes them to revert to their original positions.

One thing I did love is the bachelorette party in “Red Light on the Wedding Night” which pretty much underscored what I figured would happen; the wedding would not go ahead. Over cocktails Emily tells a super romantic story about how excited/nervous she was to marry Richard and that she tried her wedding dress on every night in the lead up. It’s a great insight into Emily and Richard’s relationship and now I want a prequel series of young Emily and Richard. What this does is tap into Lorelai’s biggest Max fears in that she isn’t actually all that in to him. This is made even more apparent by her phone call to ex Christopher mid party when everyone thinks she has sneaked off to call Max.Gilmore Girls 2.02 Luke and mini bridesIf this wasn’t a bad enough sign well then he still doesn’t have house keys and yeeeah this is one doomed relationship. It all happened so fast and while I’ve grown to like Max they do not have half the heat/chemistry of Luke and Lorelai. It is also worth mentioning that my notes from this episode include in all caps KISS ALREADY. This is after Luke has made the wedding chuppah and they have a moment while discussing the notion of the right person. The right person is standing in front of you, Lorelai.

For some reason Dean gives Max a lesson in all things Gilmore ladies. Another sure sign that this relationship is doomed and this time jump from the last episode would feel jarring if I didn’t already know that Max and Lorelai are not going to go the distance.

What is harsh is that when Lorelai flees with Rory in tow is that she hasn’t discussed any of this Max. Instead she is doing what she tends to do and that is run and while I’m so up for a Gilmore road trip she should probably tell him first.

Were you as certain as I was that the relationship with Max would be dunzo?Gilmore Girls 2.03 Emily

Julie: Ooh! I love the prequel series idea. Maybe after the new Netflix series.

Did you think the Christopher call was out-of-the-blue? I did, but now I think I get it. He’s the guy Lorelai calls when she’s stuck, when she doesn’t know what else to do. I think there’s some thing safe for her about Christopher. Maybe it’s because she knows he’ll always be there, in some way, no matter what, since he’s Rory’s father. Calling Luke would mean, whoa, taking a big step, but calling Christopher is like taking a walk down memory lane.

The one I feel for most in the Max/Lorelai messiness is Rory. It was kind of shitty for Lorelai to jump into an engagement so quickly (with her daughter’s TEACHER), when she wasn’t sure. Plus, Max is great to Rory and they seem to get along so well.

To be honest, though, I really wasn’t sure what was going to happen between Lorelai and Max. I mean, I knew they must break up at some point, but I didn’t know if the show would pull a Friends and actually have them get married. The way Lorelai handled the actual breakup was terrible and childish and really highlights how she still does have some growing up to do. Max deserved better. He was a total stand-up guy.

Now, Dean, on the other hand, Rory could leave him in the middle of the night and we’d all be fine.

What have we missed?Gilmore Girls 2.03 Rory pagerEmma: I figured she was going to ring Luke, but as you mention there is so much more there there. With Christopher it is the safe option and I also think she knows he will tell Rory and Rory will ask why. She’s dealing with her cold feet in a very long way round and this also matches how she bails on the whole thing.

There is all this talk of Lorelai running away from situations and this is the first time we’re getting to see her do it on a big scale. In a way she’s been a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy as this is exactly what she said would happen and it has. It’s no good marrying someone you don’t want to marry but there are ways of calling things off and this is not it. Rory is always Lorelai’s number 1 priority and it’s why she didn’t want to date Max in the first place, but she committed and now there are consequences and a random road trip is maybe not the thing to do. Rory calls her on her shit pointing out that they made plans – they made space in the closet – and it’s not just Lorelai in this relationship.

I am very much Team Rory when she confronts her mom in the very intense B&B about the running away and I get that they need mother/daughter boundaries but Rory is spot on here.

During this trip they do drop in at Harvard and this is pretty great. Rory gets all excited about learning and Lorelai gets wistful about the life she could’ve had. Instead of wallowing she instead decides to go all in on the inn she wants to open with Sookie. What did you make of this college visit?

Gilmore Girls 2.04 HarvardJulie: As horrible as the Max situation ended up being, at least Lorelai seems to have learned something from the situation. She can’t keep running from life. Life goes on, no matter what. The people she should’ve graduated from college with have moved on. Eventually Rory is going to move on, too. Lorelai needs something just for herself. So, I love that she talks to Sookie about getting a move on with the inn.

I can’t imagine how surreal it must be to visit a college with your high schooler and know that he or she is going to leave you one day. I know I’ll be excited about it on a lot of levels, but I also totally get Lorelai’s wistfulness regarding the passage of time — her baby is growing up, and has she, Lorelai, accomplished everything she’d hoped to have accomplished by now. And in her case, since she never went to school, what did she miss out on? How is she going to be able to be there for Rory when college is completely foreign to her?

And now Lane is back and Lorelai has a chuppah in her front yard.Gilmore Girls 2.03 Lorelai and LukeEmma: There are so many layers to this college trip and unlike on The Sopranos no one gets killed. First of all there is the Max avoidance and then there is the growing up of Rory and what Lorelai didn’t experience. It also made me realize how Rory and Felicity Porter would be the ideal crossover besties.

It’s nice to take a moment to escape Stars Hollow as while I really like that town it can get super claustrophobic at times. As claustrophobic as the Cheshire Cat. I also love that Lorelai told Sookie to tell Miss Patty about the engagement getting called off because it would be the quickest way for everyone to find out and it works. Luke doesn’t find out until the next time Lorelai rings Sookie and his super shitty mood suddenly turns into being nice to Kirk and giving everyone free coffee.

When they get back and Rory sees Lane this gives Lorelai the chance to go see Luke, which she does and yep those feelings are back. And now I’m wondering when something will happen. It’s been a slow burn and I’m guessing it will still be another good 8/12 episodes before a smooch. At least.

I also love the moment when Emily finds out the wedding is off as it is far less devastating than when she found out about the engagement. At first Emily thinks Lorelai has eloped and she’s mad because she got a new dress and then when she finds out the real story her first thought is returning the gift, which is so Emily Gilmore. It’s a playful exchange between the two and I like this lighter dynamic.

There’s a lot of the usual aughts bad fashions but one thing I noticed was Lorelai’s Porn Star tee which is so 2000/2001. Any standout outfits for you?

Gilmore Girls 2.02 LorelaiJulie: This was a much safer trip than when Meadow went looking at schools. That’s one thing missing from Gilmore Girls–the threat of violent death. Perhaps that’s something the writers can add into the new Netflix series.

I could totally see Felicity and Rory hanging out. And I could DEFINITELY see Noel the RA hitting on someone like Rory. In fact, I think he’d actually work better with Rory than with Felicity. (But Rory would totally go for Ben instead.) Now I’d like to see this crossover universe. Where’s my Gilicity fanfic?

One thing I do love about this show is the cluelessness of both Luke and Lorelai. They’re standing right in front of each other, but they’re both too chicken to make the first move. It could (and should) get old, but for some reason it doesn’t. At least not totally.

That porn star T-shirt was so of the period. Everyone was wearing inappropriate, dirty stuff on their person in the early aughts. I had a tee that said “Hamme(red).” Which was fun because of my last name, but also advertising potential drunkenness. I also appreciated Lorelai’s pug tee and faux necklace tee.

I’m pretty sure I wore to Lilith Fair basically the same thing Rory wore to build a house. It was an attractive time.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

3 Jun

A relatively quiet week on the style front what with the holiday weekend reducing the number of events, but never fear as we’ve still got plenty of sartorial treats on offer from the Resort 2017 fashion shows and Hollywood Reporter award season showcase. Kether DonohueThe Hollywood Reporter continues my favorite series of the year with their pre-Emmy nominations roundtables including the monster Supporting Actor class photo, which this year features actors from TV Ate My Wardrobe faves such as You’re the Worst, The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, The LeftoversTogetherness and Girls.

The 30-strong actor photo can be seen here and it was this individual shot of Kether Donohue that gives me full heart eyes; the caped Bariano jacket, Stella & Jamie top, Adrianna Papell skirt, the red lipstick and the mischievous glint in Donohue’s eyes make this a standout. I’m on record plenty of times not loving shoes in the beige/nude zone, but these Carmen Steffens pumps work like a charm with this look.

Tony Actress roundtable

It’s not just TV that is getting the roundtable treatment and both the Tony actresses and actors are featured this week. There is so much to love about this group of women and the styling of the shoot is far less fussy and far less pastel infused than the drama TV actress edition. The vibe here is pretty chill and the whole conversation which you can watch below is super charming and really interesting.

I am pretty new to all things Broadway – my first show was two years ago this week when Michelle Williams was in Cabaret – so there is plenty I didn’t realize before I watched this. Namely how dangerous performing on Broadway can be.Michelle WilliamsI couldn’t find the fashion credits, but I’m just gonna go ahead and assume that Michelle Williams is wearing Louis Vuitton and while I can’t see her feet I’m also gonna assume that she is wearing some form of the chunky boots (see Alicia Vikander below). This photo in the midst of getting a makeup touch up is ultimate Michelle Williams and therefore I heart it hard.Alicia VikanderI know I should probably hate these boots and yet the 90s teen in me loves everything about them and knows they would have been my dream shoe in 1999. In fact this whole Alicia Vikander look is peek teen Emma and I love everything about it. Vikander is one of the Louis Vuitton campaign stars who attended the Resort 2017 Rio de Janeiro show at the weekend and the location is a stunner. You can view the collection here.Kiernan Shipka and Kate MaraFrom Rio to the UK and the Lady Dior Pub as part of the Dior Express which ended with the Resort collection getting showcased at Blenheim Palace. Kiernan Shipka looks every level of joyful in a red turtleneck and the photos of her from this event give the impression that she is having the best time. Which I adore. Kate Mara’s white frock is also pretty great (which I would personally avoid for spilling reasons) and maybe there will be a lot more Dior in the yes red carpet column over this award season. Maybe. Also where is JLaw? Rose ByrneOkay so the next two outfits are from last week, but somehow I missed them and much like polka dots I am here for all the star print ensembles; Rose Byrne in Fall 2016 Valentino ticks all these boxes. Diane KrugerDiane Kruger’s mini Marc Jacobs dress is giving me Etsy disco ball vibes and she is crushing her red carpet choices as per at the Sky premiere in Berlin.

The Americans 4.12 “A Roy Rogers in Franconia” Review: “Did You Have to do That?”

2 Jun

It is hard to hide who you are on The Americans when confronted with a moment of danger and when Elizabeth’s protective motherly instincts kicked in with her training last week there was only going to be one winner against the two would-be muggers/rapists. Elizabeth was not only quick in her methods; taking out both guys in a matter of seconds, but her calm demeanor after the incident also has Paige questioning the few non-specific bits of information her parents have given in regards to their work.

There are only so many vague and repeated phrases a girl can take before she demands a little more and seeing her mom in full self-defense mode has sped up this process. The Americans 4.12 ElizabethQuestions and doubt are seeping through the ever growing cracks and it isn’t just the threads on the Russian containers that are unstable. Paige is in shock over what she witnessed and Elizabeth is doing her best to keep her queries to the minimum. Yes she had to do that and no this is not the first time. The conversation about ‘how many?’ is never a fun one, but on this occasion it is even more problematic (don’t even ask Elizabeth or Philip the more common and often contentious between couples ‘how many?’ query) and even if Elizabeth did know the number (and I can’t see her keeping a tally of the dead) it isn’t going to offer Paige any comfort. They’ve also told Paige that they’re not going to lie to her and so going with a non-committal “I don’t know” is the safest option.

Paige is pushing back in a big way this week as we have seen her do on a number of occasions and part of this includes a common grumble from a teenager; they’re treating her like she is 12. The difference here being that anything they do tell her could severely impact their safety and how she sees her parents. When Elizabeth tries the “I wanted to serve my country” party line Paige calls her out on this and so we get a deeper insight into Elizabeth’s motivations for joining the KGB beyond her mother. The Americans 4.12 Philip, Elizabeth and PaigeMirroring Paige’s conversation with her father about his background we find out more about the city of Smolensk and how like a lot of Russia it was torn apart during WWII and the years that followed involved a lot of hardship. In essence what Elizabeth took from this experience was seeing a community up against it surviving and fighting. This is all she wanted to do and it didn’t matter whether it was dangerous or not. What this does is reinforce Philip’s proclamation that it wasn’t about what you liked growing up because they grew up in a war ravaged and poor climate worlds away from where they are.

Danger still exists, but it is the cloak and dagger variety. Although it is worth noting that this season opened with a mugging turned murder in Philip’s flashback and a version of this has happened in the present; danger lurks beyond their work. The difference here being that it is Paige who is new to this killing business and she will also need therapy. EST probably is not the answer.

Elizabeth’s explanation works on a couple of levels as it deflects Paige from some of the more insidious answers she could give about the work they do (multiple murders for example) while also giving Paige the connection to her past and family that she craves. Elizabeth mentions how much she would love to go back home with Paige to see how much has changed and this is the first time Russia has been discussed by either Philip or Elizabeth in a way this season that hasn’t been tinged with the notion of having to return home as a last resort. The Americans 4.12 groceriesThrowing a spanner in the works is Philip having to leave for work during these conversations with Paige as it just prompts more questions they’re not inclined to answer. However, Paige keeps pushing and in these pauses Philip and Elizabeth do the wordless communicating with their eyes thing that is so incredibly effective; these silent agreements to tell Paige a little bit more coupled with the way each of them takes part of the info dump reinforces the notion that the Centre matched well when they paired Elizabeth with Philip. It doesn’t matter how much they differ in their opinions on matters such as the bio-weapon plan, when it comes down to their family they will present a united front. Luckily for them the op Philip is leaving for is William and not Kimmy and I’d love to see them explain away why he needs to go hang out with a 16 year-old and smoke pot.

Fear, intrigue and wonder all cross Elizabeth’s face as she watches Paige with Matthew; Paige is becoming exactly what the Centre wanted and yet there is something a little disturbing about seeing her in this role. Another place where the pauses are loaded with meaning is when Elizabeth tells Philip about what happened prior to the violent incident and this is the thing she can’t stop thinking about; Paige was reporting what Matthew had told her about Stan and Martha (Gabriel follows through on his promise to contact Martha’s parents to Philip’s satisfaction).

They don’t need Paige to spy on Matthew for them and they are concerned as to what her motivations here are especially as Elizabeth has witnessed a little bit of flirting between the pair. Little do they know that Paige just had her first ever (?) kiss with him and it is hard to read exactly what Paige is doing here as we do know she used to have a crush on him. Philip and Elizabeth are fine with her being friends with him or whatever (I would love to see exactly how they would be with Matthew if they start dating), but as long as it is on her terms and not for them. Paige is concerned about what Henry might have been saying to Stan and I’m with Paige on this one, particularly how they shut Henry out after the ‘mugging’ incident. The Americans 4.12 Henry and MatthewThis is where Paige really digs her heels in and she wants to know what Philip is doing beyond a meeting as she now knows they lied to her about the lack of danger. She has a point when she mentions that her mom killed someone in front of her and she might as well know everything, right? Well Paige, let me tell you a few stories. Regardless, they do relent and reveal the weapon part, but not the gory details of ‘squirting yourself out your anus in liquid form.’ The way Holly Taylor responds with “Great” to this secret is ultimate teen disdain and The Americans continues to get their teens so right.

What Philip doesn’t know is he is walking into a trap and so is William. William has been resistant to getting those codes ever since Philip and Elizabeth first approached him and his concern is about how fucked up this weapon is. William doesn’t want to be part of something that could cause this much death, but Gabriel works his Gabriel convincing magic laboring the points about home and duty.

The Americans 4.12 Philip and Gabriel

Philip is surprised that William was that easy to convince, but Gabriel knows what it feels like to be alone and he taps into that part of William we have been seeing. As with soaps like General Hospital it is “not logical, it is emotional.” Side note – there is nothing funnier this week than seeing Elizabeth trying to ‘get’ an American soap opera.

Connections are important and Elizabeth and Philip’s partnership is the rarity in this business of so many people working and ending up alone. No matter their differences they are the spy equivalent of #RelationshipGoals. The Americans 4.12 Elizabeth and Paige GHOleg has been grappling with his position and what this whole war means in a way that parallels William and the death of his younger brother has had a huge impact. When Tatiana jokes about killing half the population of the Eastern Seaboard he takes this joke seriously as he understands that while they have brilliant scientists they also have terrible resources.

One such example is the near missile miss when a glare of sunshine read as a weapon and here he sees himself as the steadfast hand that didn’t leap to conclusions. Oleg does what William cannot and warns their enemy of this bio-weapon plot putting Philip in danger of being caught. Philip knows that Stan hasn’t been home from work for two days and this might be vital in reading the William situation even if his instincts have been all over the place this year. The Americans 4.12 The VaultMail Robot comes into play in a secondary sting operation as the FBI discover a surveillance device within it and catch the person who has been switching out the tapes. The title of this week’s episode “A Roy Rogers in Franconia” is also where this woman met the so-called mobster who offered $500 a week to swap out the tapes and it sounds like the most run of the mill location there is. Just how they like to do these dead drops. The key is to not draw attention. While the William op takes precedent, a car with a video camera has been left to watch this drop and I’m worried about what might happen to Hans as he seems like the number one most likely person to take the fall for this.

Everything is amping up for next week’s season finale and it is incredible to think just how much has taken place this year from the first half of the season with Nina’s sad demise and the Martha conclusion to every development in Paige’s somewhat unintentional junior spy training. Feelings have come into play far more this season than any before it with Philip’s earlier spiral and Elizabeth’s new found vulnerability reinforce this idea that it is emotions and not logic that drive things. Even when you are a spy.

Shot(s) of the Week

The Americans 4.12 Oleg and Tatiana The Americans 4.12 olegThe Rezidentura set is great for a number of reasons including how it feels like a completely different country – which it kind of is – and the huge portrait of Lenin which pulls focus. In the first shot he stands over Tatiana’s shoulder and is the constant reminder of where this version of the USSR started.

Oleg is to the side of him in both these scenes and it suggests the resistance he is currently experiencing. He is feeling a duty to something bigger because of how shitty their resources are and there is real fear in his mind. I also love that he is using his coat in the first shot in such an expressive way that would imply he is also hiding an IRL bump (he is not). The Americans 4.12 Elizabeth fridgeSpeaking of which – best use of a kitchen appliance so far this season. Also A+ reaction face from Elizabeth as Matthew tells Henry how to hook the computer up to the TV.

Disguise of the Week

The Americans 4.12 PhilipOnly one disguise this week and it is Philip’s standard William attire as they don’t know when the surveillance teams will be on him and it really weirds me out how much this version of Philip looks like my dad in the 1980s.

Outfit I Would Wear in 2016The Americans 4.12 Elizabeth and PaigeI’m going the easy route this week with the classic plaid shirt and jeans option and once again the costume department is doing a terrific job in concealing Keri Russell’s bump. And not just with an endless supply of coats. Excellent wardrobe repeating with Paige’s choice of pajama shirt too.
