Out of the Box: Look of the Week

9 Jan

It is the first new “Out of the Box” of 2015 and after two weeks of near winter hibernation everyone is coming out to play for premieres, magazine covers, award shows and the TCA winter press tour.

Broad City S2 premiere Amy RyanBroad City returns in less than a week (Wednesday 14!) and after attending the Girls premiere a couple of days ago, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer took center stage at the Broad City premiere party. If I was ever to attempt a form of crop top then Abbi’s outfit is my platonic ideal of this with the sliveriest of stomach skin on show. Amy Ryan is one of many guest stars we can expect to see in season 3 and this is one super happy photo of awesome people.

Broad City premiereSpeaking of awesome people and because I couldn’t chose between these two photos from the premiere here are Abbi and Ilana (her white jacket is aces) doing the group party pose with SNL’s Kate McKinnon and the always amazing Carrie Brownstein (also wearing a coat to be coveted). Drawing hearts around this.

Viola DavisAt the People’s Choice Awards (which I know no one really cares about but hey there were a handful of great outfits) Viola Davis looks stunning in an Escada column of hot-pink. Plus when she won there was a good amount of shade throwing at the awful New York Times piece that was somehow intended as a compliment towards Davis. In her speech Davis said “Thank you Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers and Peter Nowalk for thinking of a leading lady who looks like my classic beauty.”

Melissa McCarthyEverything about Melissa McCarthy’s outfit is a win and the leather piping gives a chic and stylish edge stopping it from being just another all black ensemble. Bonus red lipstick points.

Allison JanneyAllison Janney co-hosted these awards so there were a variety of outfits and it is this sparkly Rani Zakhem number from the red carpet is the standout. Smoking hot.

Kit HaringtonIt is going to be a weekend of a lot of dudes in suits and Kit Harington shows how it is done (even with a simple suit the tailoring can be off) at the premiere of Testament of Youth. Skinny tie perfection.

Tina Fey and Ellie KemperSwitching things up and TCA winter press tour delivered on the floral attire from Tina Fey and Ellie Kemper as they discuss their new Netflix (and previously NBC) project The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. All 13-episodes will debut March 6 and I am already obsessing over Kimmy’s super colorful wardrobe from the promo pictures.

Lena Dunham ElleLena Dunham covers the Women in TV issue of Elle and while it doesn’t quite hit the polka dot highs of her Vogue cover from this time last year, the cover shot is still a striking. Bed hair win.

Allison WilliamsAnother Girls star magazine cover and the styling of this Glamour shot is still very Allison Williams without going down the preppy or princess route. The Bottega Veneta dress and relaxed sitting/slightly hunched posing is really working for me.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

24 Oct

“Out of the Box” is serving up an almost all Elle Women in Hollywood rundown with a bonus fantasy casting prospect courtesy of the GQ Gentlemen’s ball. There’s a shift into fall threads and a whole lot simple designs with a twist sticking with a blue/black/white color palette. Oh and the event was in association with Calvin Klein, this is pretty much what most attendees are wearing.

Lizzy CaplanLizzy Caplan’s color block big collar number is like the Calvin Klein sporty twist on this Louis Vuitton outfit Michelle Williams wore to the Cabaret opening night. The zip details give it a playful edge and it’s a super cute dress.

Ashley MadekweWearing a Calvin Klein LBD with a difference thanks to the addition of a metallic bib is Ashley Madekwe and this is another stunning simple look with a slight edge.

Kerry WashingtonMore dramatic zip detail and an even more dramatic neckline, which looks like the fanciest serviette; Kerry Washington is totally pulling off a dress that might be too much for others. The dash of blue eye makeup doesn’t delve into matchy matchy territory and I love her oxblood nail color next to navy of the dress.

Tina FeySo we’ve had a LBD with a twist and now here’s just a simple and effective LBD from Tina Fey.

Brie LarsonAnd another very simple outfit from one of the cover stars of the Women in Hollywood issue of Elle and Brie Larson hits one of my sweet spots for a fancy(ish) pants event as I’m a sucker for the menswear influence (owning a really good lady tux is the dream)The only thing that doesn’t quite work is going full monochromatic with the Louboutin pumps (which are a slightly different shade of white).

Joshua Jackson and Taylor KitschI would make a #TrueDetectiveSeason2 gag here if one of them wasn’t probably/definitely been cast, but if someone could cast ‘Grizzly McBeardy’ Andrew Garfield, this dashing and well tailored Joshua Jackson and a very Riggins looking Taylor Kitsch in something then I would be thrilled. Make this happen casting people. Oh and maybe trim Andrew Garfield’s beard down just a smidge (okay a few inches). For now we have this excellent image thanks to the GQ Gentlemen’s Ball.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

12 Sep

A busy week with a whole host of events such as the Toronto International Film Festival, New York Fashion Week, the US Open and fall TV shindigs. We’ve got the best looks from these events – except for NYFW runway watching style which has separate posts here and here – and there’s been a lot of game stepping up fashion wise. It’s not surprising then that this is TV Ate My Wardrobe’s biggest “Out of the Box” post since we started over a year ago.

Tina FeyStarting with Tina Fey at TIFF in a gorgeous midnight-blue Temperley London frock at the This is Where I Leave You press conference and she is serving up a whole lot of confidence and glam. A pretty dress is a pretty dress, however one thing a lot of these dresses have in common this week is fabric that is textured in a manner that makes them stand out beyond the print or cut of the silhouette.

Tina Fey TIFFI couldn’t choose between the two Tina Fey TIFF dresses and this Christian Siriano number is doing the play on texture in an even more striking and overt manner. As with the Temperley London this is very much in the Tina Fey wheelhouse, but it stands out thanks to the embossing. Both the hair up retro style and the more relaxed hair down approach work for their respective outfits.

Kristen WiigThe dude in the background seems like he is way into this Suno dress Kristen Wiig is wearing at the Welcome to Me premiere at TIFF and so am I. The mixture of stripes and florals is not something everyone can pull off and Wiig is hitting the mark on this occasion (I can also picture it on Diane Kruger, because Diane Kruger). The print is giving off an impression of pleating on the skirt and this is one of my current clothing obsessions.

Greta GerwigSo How I Met Your Dad didn’t happen and while I would have loved to see Greta Gerwig on TV in a way I am glad it isn’t this particular project, I hope it doesn’t make her run from future TV ventures. Appearing at the While We Were Young TIFF premiere Gerwig looks super cute in a swirly metallic patterned Prabal Gurung frock.

Chelsea PerettiMoving on to the Fox Fall Eco-Casino party and first up Chelsea Peretti in charcoal grey. I really love this and I’m extra excited that I will get to talk about Gina’s top notch sweater game on Brooklyn Nine-Nine very soon.

Hannah SimonePockets! Hannah Simone has had a busy week so while this dress is not setting the world on fire, it’s perfectly lovely and the pockets give it an extra edge.

Zooey DeschanelIt is after Labor Day and Zooey Deschanel continues to wear white *gasp* Eh, I don’t know if anyone really pays attention to that ‘rule’ anymore and this is another example of casual, but cute attire from the New Girl star. I especially like the black waist detail – though I really want to see what it looks like from the back – and I applaud the kitten heel choice. A bold lip color would really set the whole thing off.

Jess WeixlerInStyle celebrated 20 years with a lavish and appropriately stylish bash including Jess Weixler in a beautiful silk gown (plus pockets) with contrasting prints. This is also the ideal time to mention The Good Wife returns in a week (Sunday, 21) and Robyn is another character who makes me want all the sweaters.

Yvonne StrahovskiIn textured dress trend triumph is Yvonne Strahovski; I love how unique this with the leather accents and the blue ring detail. Strahovski also had one of my favorite runway watching looks earlier this week at the Naeem Khan show.

Keke PalmerIt’s been a big week for Keke Palmer as she became the first African-American Cinderella on Broadway and here she is at the InStyle party looking super chic in a Etre Cécile tank top paired with a beautiful icy (and you guessed it textured/pocketed) Mantu skirt.

Lizzy CaplanAfter all that glitz and glam we will leave you with the best relaxed look of the week with Lizzy Caplan at the US Open in jeans and a stripy tank with a grey jumper tied around her waist. Red lip color really is the best way to make even the most chilled outfit pop.

10 New Yorker TV Posts: From The Hummingbird Theory to Reality TV

24 Jul

The New Yorker has dropped the paywall for all articles dating back to 2007 for the summer and now is the time to catch up on seven years of writing that you may have missed or only read select quotes from. The New Yorker is calling this “a summer-long free-for-all” as they launch their new site and introduce a similar system to The New York Times in the fall. Content wise they are also introducing a Daily Cultural Comment column “in which our critics and other writers confront everything from the latest debates over the impact of technology to the latest volume from Chicago, Oslo, or Lima and the ongoing sagas of Don Draper, Daenerys Targaryen, and Hannah Horvath.”

With this in mind I have selected 10 articles with a link to television including some of my favorite pieces from current TV critic Emily Nussbaum (who makes up just under half the entries and hates lists, sorry Emily), recollections from Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, a range of genres and one profile that is about a current pop culture queen back in 2011 (this one is the exception to the TV focus of this list).

EnlightenedIn the same package as The Hour boxset and another show on my catch up list is Enlightened and Emily Nussbaum’s Hummingbird Theory draws on Laura Dern’s Amy Jellicoe from Enlightened among others like Leslie Knope and Carrie Mathison. It is something we touched upon during our Comeback discussions and these kinds of characters are “idealistic feminine dreamers whose personalities are irritants.”

Emily Nussbaum’s essay on Sex and the City in reaction to Brett Martin’s Difficult Men: Behind the Scenes of a Creative Revolution: From ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘The Wire’ to ‘Mad Men’ and ‘Breaking Bad is one of my favorite Nussbaum New Yorker pieces. Nussbaum looks for reasons beyond the terrible movies as to why Sex and the City has lost its place in TV legacy discussions. All while pointing out its groundbreaking position and reinforcing why it was one of the most talked about shows beyond its ties to fashion.

Continuing with Emily Nussbaum and female centric shows that spark a lot of debate/column inches with Nussbaum’s thoughts on the sex scene in one of the most discussed and beloved (and hated) episodes of Girls “One Man’s Trash.”

The final piece from current New Yorker TV critic Emily Nussbaum is an examination of the variety – quality and genre – of work from one of the most controversial and prolific showrunners working in TV at the moment; Ryan Murphy.

Tina Fey wrote about her experiences on SNL and the lessons from working on late night in an essay from her book Bossypants (there are slight differences between the two).

Nailing those pre-college summer job feelings and slowly realizing what she wanted to do with her life is Amy Poehler in “Take Your Licks.”

Emily Greenhouse says goodbye to Gossip Girl and makes sure to mention Dan Humphrey’s fictitious New Yorker submission.

Last year Lauren Collins asked why so many (myself included) have become obsessed with Scandinavian television tracking the success of Forbrydelsen (The Killing), Broen (The Bridge) and Borgen.

While I don’t necessarily agree with everything in Nancy Franklin’s reality TV analysis in “Frenemy Territory” it is fun to look back to 2008 when reality shows like The Hills were at peak popularity.

This last recommendation is a slight cheat as it isn’t strictly TV (SNLCSI and Teen Mom all get a mention), it is however a fascinating look at the Taylor Swift angst empire back in 2011. Lizzie Widdicombe talks about Swift’s “unjaded sincerity no matter how contrived the situation” in “You Belong with Me” and it’s just as relevant now three years later.

Best of the 2014 Tony Awards Red Carpet

9 Jun

The Tony Awards were held last night and as I just saw my first musical this weekend (no really) this award show couldn’t come at a better time (I saw Cabaret and it was amazing, even if it didn’t win anything). As I’ve just got back from vacation this is a lot less in-depth than usual, but there is still plenty to discuss as the red carpet is awash with amazing gowns (and tuxedos).

photo1 (2)Leighton Meester looks stunning in ivory Antonio Berardi and this almost makes up for the lack of Seth Cohen/Blair Waldorf wedding photos as she is accompanied by husband Adam Brody.

photo6Now for something vibrant from Sutton Foster in a fuschia Reem Acra.

photo7Audra McDonald won last night (and it’s a record sixth win) for her performance in Lady Day and she also had an impact on the red carpet in a sea of black and white gowns. This look is maybe missing a necklace, but I really love the relaxed strapless Escada frock.

photo8Speaking of black and white dresses with Lucy Liu looking fabulous in Vivienne Westwood.

photo2Feathers can be hard to pull off and it helps that Maggie Gyllenhaal has the whole boho look down (no pun intended) and this Dolce & Gabbana is perfect for her.

Judith LightI adore Judith Light and the long sleeve Randi Rahm gown she wore looks fabulous on her.

photo5Another fantastic black dress with Vera Farmiga in Stella McCartney. This time matching her hair waves to her dress ones.

photo10This is a fun/sexy take on pattern with Anika Noni Rose wearing a leopard print Badgley Mischka.

photo9This is from backstage and Tina Fey is killing it in a midnight blue with gold print Oscar de la Renta gown.

photo4The perfect way to end this post is with Matt Bomer looking pretty damn perfect. Swoon.

Best of ABC and NBC’s 2014 Upfronts Red Carpet

14 May

More Upfront red carpet fashion and it’s a joint NBC/ABC post. From what I can gather from the previews there’s a whole lot of unappealing “I’m good at my job, but suck at my personal life” female centered narratives, sitcoms that might work better as rom-coms and SO many murder shows. This is of course a simplistic overview and I’m sure there’s more to these shows than this – a snap judgement can be wrong as Sleepy Hollow has proved – but at the moment comedies are holding my interest way more than most of the new dramas.

Karen GillanKaren Gillan is the lead in Selfie and while I’m eh on the title and Gillan not using her real accent, she is incredibly charming so I will at least watch the pilot (ditto John Cho). I’m sensing a Clueless vibe from the preview, which is probably a far too kind comparison at this point. Gillan’s still rocking the pixie cut (her character is not) and those appear to be hashtags on her Thom Browne dress, which makes sense considering the name and focus of her new show. Hashtags alone would be too on the nose, but combined with the textured looking wings shifts the focus. Gillan tends to wear slightly more unusual dresses on the red carpet and I cannot wait for the Guardians of the Galaxy promo trail.

Aja KingGoing for a more a more simple approach is How to Get Away with Murder’s Aja King and other than the clunky looking shoes (strappy would be much better) this is a fun look for this kind of event; the accessories make up for the footwear. How to Get Away with Murder is the latest from Shonda Rhimes with Viola Davis in the lead role and it looks twisty, soapy and like the kind of show I will be watching with an Olivia Pope size glass of wine.

Juliette Lewis UpfrontJuliette Lewis is pulling double duty as she’s in Fox’s 10-part Twin Peeks esque Wayward Pines and Secrets and Lies for ABC. They are set to debut midseason and her presence in both makes them instantly more appealing. Finally some shoes that aren’t too clunky or too nude and power clash fine with the print on her ALICE by Temperley dress What you can’t see in this shot is the cut out back section of this vibrant floral frock and even though it reminds me of a bedspread from my grandpa’s house, Lewis is totally working it.

Tina Fey and Ellie KemperThere’s no preview yet for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and it’s on my ‘please don’t be terrible’ list for all the Tina Fey-producing, Ellie Kemper starring reasons. Both dresses – Fey in Veronica Beard and Kemper in Parker – are signs of Upfronts veterans as they are both the right blend of fancy/casual.

Cristin MiliotiCristin Milioti is starring in A to Z which while I’m not sure how long the premise can sustain, I will be watching because of her and Ginsberg. This look is pure 90s and something Liv Tyler would have worn; this is not a bad thing and we all know how much I adore this fashion period. It’s floral and pretty much all of these dresses are making me glad the sun is shining right now (even if my current attire is less than fun, flirty dress and more clashing baggy threads). Pink lip color and bangs are detracting my attention from the blah nude footwear, also known as ‘why do people keep choosing these shoes?’

Evolution of Hip-Hop Dancing and a $100 Bet on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show Debut

18 Feb

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon kicked off with a whole slew of famous faces including the already publicized Will Smith and some surprises. Following on from “Evolution of Mom Dancing” which Jimmy performed last year with Michelle Obama (who will be a guest on Thursday), Will Smith pulled out the big moves for “Evolution of Hip-Hop Dancing.” Dressed in the appropriate Fresh Prince approved dungarees (one strap undone of course), the moves include the “Running Man” and the “Carlton.”

http://youtu.be/ZTpn30Pms8I

The star-studded cameos were boosted in a fun way as Robert De Niro (who was the first guest on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon), Tina Fey and Seth Rogen (to name just a few) came out one by one to pay Jimmy $100 as part of a bet. Some produced the money from ‘safe places’ with Sarah Jessica Parker getting it out of her shoe and Mariah Carey pulling it out of her cleavage. Backstage would have been interesting and earlier in the day Lindsay Lohan Instagrammed a shot which hinted at some sort of involvement with the Fallon’s debut. If I hadn’t seen this I might not have recognized her. Stephen Colbert ends the segment adapting one the best TV welcomes, but I will leave that as a surprise and I’m sure there will be more treats this week on The Tonight Show.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

14 Feb

As promised it’s a New York Fashion Week special with a look at some of the famous faces who attended the runway shows this week and for all our other NYFW coverage head here.

Solange at MillyWe tend to only focus on faces from TV with this feature, however it would be remiss of me if I didn’t include Solange at the Milly by Michelle Smith runway show as this is hands down my favorite outfit from the front row this week. Combining bubblegum pink with two such bold colors could have been a step too far and yet Solange pulls it off and looks incredible. This coat is my everything and will help combat the current chilly New York climate.

Tina Fey spotted smiling while leaving the Lincoln Center during NYFW in New York CitySpeaking of weather preparedness here is Tina Fey leaving the Carolina Herrera show on Monday switching out strappy heels for Hunter wellies and they still look pretty fantastic with this outfit. I’m on the fence with the Tootsie like glasses, but everything else is fantastic.

Diane Kruger Hugo BossOut of the Box regular Diane Kruger’s outfit manages to be weather appropriate and super stylish as she heads to the Hugo Boss show. There’s no cute, but freezing strappy shoe BS here and it’s no surprise that I am very much in love with the sweater she is wearing.

Zosia Mamet Rebecca MinkoffThe coat over the shoulders thing is very fashion week and Girls’ Zosia Mamet also demonstrates this at Rebecca Minkoff in stunning orange. Coats and sweaters are my jam.

Taylor Schilling and Caitlin FitzgeraldLooking very different from their Masters of Sex and Orange is the New Black characters is Caitlin Fitzgerald and Taylor Schilling hangout together at the Thakoon show. I’m normally not all that into jumpsuits, but pairing it with these booties has got me on board the whole jumpsuit of it all and Fitzgerald is giving off an effortlessly chic vibe. I’m pro tights and I love the color combination of Schilling’s bold print dress with the rainbow infused sparkly coat. So much shimmer.

Rose ByrnePolka dots! Rose Byrne wearing a dress at Michael Kors that I would very much like in my closet and it’s a classic look. I’m going to ignore the clumpy heels as this is a perfect outfit without them.

AnnaSophia RobbMore polka dots! And this time it’s shoes with AnnaSophia Robb wearing the cutest heels with a Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress at the DVF show (of course). Robb is always a delight at both NYFW and on the red carpet; while we don’t know if she will return as 1980s Carrie Bradshaw, in the present day she is just as fashion forward.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

17 Jan

Monochrome has been back in favor for a while now and so many of the best red carpet looks at various events this week have embraced this trend. This also applies to some on point looks on TV this week and so Out of the Box is focusing on the best in black and white. It’s also been a huge week for TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite Diane von Furstenberg as she celebrates 40 years of her iconic wrap dress with the launch of the Journey of a Dress exhibition as well as getting a name check on American Horror Story: Coven.

Allison Williams DVFAllison Williams went for retro glamour while celebrating Diane von Furstenberg as she ditches the classic all American look she tends to favor on the red carpet. The new season of Girls premiered last weekend and this coupled with the Golden Globes means that the Girls cast have been doing the rounds. This is my style highlight of all the many different outfits Williams has worn and I’m digging the faux bob and red lipstick.

Diane Kruger ChanelDiane Kruger in Chanel is a recipe for success and she pulls off this super cute mini bow accented ensemble like a Chanel wearing pro (she is a face of their skin care range after all). Here’s another version of the ‘Lego’ Chanel clutch and I’m having all the bag envy right now. This is a luncheon event for W magazine and the fresh faced look works perfectly; no one wants to go all out for a daytime shindig.

Keri Russell Fox all starIt’s the TCA winter tour and a whole host of parties and panels have taken place including the Fox All-Star event. Keri Russell switched up this outfit for the Americans panel but kept the leather jacket and monochrome palette. I’ve been watching a lot Felicity recently so it’s been a whole lot of knitwear, Russell can totally pull of the leather badass style and this is a stunning look even if I tend to dislike white pumps. As always her hair looks beyond incredible and The Americans is high on my most anticipated list.

Gillian JacobsGilliam Jacobs attended a Chanel hosted event launching Drew Barrymore’s new book of photography and I’m mesmerized by this hypnotic frock. It reminds me of those 60s art prints and of the dress I wore on New Year’s Eve; I love the different textures and patterns and it makes it hard to look away.

Golden Globes PromoTina Fey and Amy Poehler’s Golden Globes style has already been covered and yet somehow this promo shot slipped under our radar; it’s too damn good to leave out and totally fits in with this week’s “Out of the Box” theme.

American Horror StoryIt’s hard to believe that we haven’t discussed how incredible Frances Conroy is on AHS: Coven and while I still can’t work out if I actually enjoy the show – it’s definitely a hot mess – I’m super into Conroy’s Myrtle as a Grace Coddington/Vivienne Westwood inspired hybrid. The black and white polka dots combined with the leather yellow gloves is perfection and Myrtle has quite the thing for fashion as she refers to the DVF wrap dress as the greatest invention of our time.

Zooey Deschanel Kate SpadeFrom this shot it looks like your average polka dot dress (which you know we would love), instead those dots are actually apples and this is the second week in a row for Kate Spade and New Girl on this list. Paired with a red cardigan and bowed belted this is an excellent daytime take on monochrome. You can buy this Kate Spade New York Domino dress here (and it’s almost half off).

2014 Golden Globes: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s Winning Style

13 Jan

Another awards with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the helm, in which they were sadly largely absent during the middle and where they pushed the envelope in a way that Ricky Gervais never could “And now, like a supermodel’s vagina, let’s all give a warm welcome to Leonardo DiCaprio.” There were a couple of moments that didn’t work in the opening monologue – the Captain Phillips gags are super questionable – but overall they did what we all hoped they would do and made us laugh a lot. Plus Amy Poehler finally won an award! This pretty much made my evening.

Amy and Tina red carpetFirst up the red carpet and Amy’s gone for Stella McCartney that turns the simple black gown on its head with asymmetric detail. This might be the best her hair has ever looked and that wry smile suggests that she knows this. Tina Fey has opted for a vibrant floral printed Carolina Herrera frock and voluminous hair and it’s only going to get bigger.

Amy and TinaThe pair pretty much wore the same colors from the opening monologue last year with Tina going for oxblood this time around – the beading on this dress is exquisite.

Tina and Amy drinkng Golden GlobesAnother change and updos and strapless dresses for both. By this point it was probably needed as the show had descended into rambling speech chaos. That’s the beauty of the Golden Globes – alcohol on the tables. Some nice shade throwing in Taylor Swift’s direction from Tina Fey as she congratulated Amy Poehler with “I just want to say congratulations again to my friend Amy Poehler, I love you and there’s a special place in hell for you.”

Amy Poehler winWhile we’re on the subject of Amy Poehler winning, here is that moment and I’m pretty sure it’s the happiest I’ve ever seen my Twitter feed on an awards night. It’s been a long time coming.

Watch Amy Poehler’s speech below.
