Out of the Box: Look of the Week

10 Feb

Awards season continues to dominate all things style with the big luncheon and DGA Awards taking place over the last week. Plus we’ve got the premieres for The Good Fight and Big Little Lies (both starting next Sunday), Berlin Film Festival jury highlights, on set with Broad City and partying with Madewell. Plus New York Fashion Week kicks off with a blizzard.

Also the TV Ate My Wardobe newsletter is back! Subscribe here.ruth-neggaAt the Oscar nominee luncheon Ruth Negga continues to dominate sartorially by pairing a super cute pastel sweater with a leather skirt; mixing sweet with edgy in Miu Miu. The whole look is fantastic including her lipstick and cool hand in the pocket posing.

I saw Loving at the weekend and her performance is amazing; understated and unshowy in a way that doesn’t always get recognized. isabelle-huppertIsabelle Huppert gives off every level incredible in a stunning print and sequin Armani Privé Spring 2017 look. Trying to avoid using the word ‘chic’ when talking about Huppert – because I don’t want to sound like a cliche – is hard.viola-davisThe prints they keep on coming and Viola Davis in Bottega Veneta is a perfect daytime event ensemble.emma-stone-and-ryan-goslingAt the DGA Awards Emma Stone manages to make me like fringe in Stella McCartney and her shortened tux jacket blends menswear inspiration with a super feminine gown. I also dig the mid-rolling up of the sleeves. Oh, hey Ryan Gosling.christine-baranskiMore sparkles for Christine Baranski at the premiere for The Good Fight and she looks as fabulous and classy as ever. Now how to score an invite to her lake house.good-fightVery much looking forward to having these ladies back on my screen and together again.

Broad City S4 excitement is as high as these gowns are fancy. Very much need these ladies back in my life.

maggie-gyllenhaalMaggie Gyllenhaal is on the 2017 Berlin Film Festival jury and long sleeve florals paired with boots has been her go to style choice for both photo calls; it is really working for her. The pink bow is a cute touch here and this is very much in her cool, hippy mom wheelhouse.julia-jentsch-and-maggie-gyllenhaalAt the press conference this leans more ’90s and I love it. German actress Julia Jentsch paired a blue sweater with the most fabulous pants complete with colorful piping and silver pumps. I am looking forward to seeing more from both these ladies.

Conversation turned to politics at this event including asking fellow jury member Diego Luna about the wall and Gyllenhaal (who attended the Women’s March in Washington D.C.) said “I feel like I want to let the world know that there are many, many people in my country who are ready to resist.”withertwinsOne way to feel old is seeing kids of actors all grown up (see also Gillian Anderson and Ewan McGregor) and considering Reese Witherspoon was pregnant with Ava when she shot Cruel Intentions (teen movie fave) I feel oooooooold. The whole looking so much alike thing is also eerie and cool.

And of course they both look great at the Big Little Lies premiere in matching – but not really – style frocks. Haney gold floral for Ava Phillippe and gold heels, with Reese in sparkly Elie Saab.

From gold pumps to gold flats and things have been super emotional on every Jane the Virgin cast member’s Insta this week for obvious reasons. Thankful for this very soothing and fabulous casual look from Gina Rodriguez.

Much to my delight (but maybe not my bank balance) Madewell has launched a new collection of intimates and this range looks equal parts sexy and comfortable. A good ratio when it comes to underwear. Madewell is a brand I adore as it caters to my casual classic sensibilities and they do really great stripe T-shirts (like I need anymore).

Both Jenny Slate and Zoe Kazan are in outfits I would wear/probably already have at the Madewell party they hosted. Great lipstick too.

New York Fashion Week begins with a whole lot of snow and at the Rag & Bone 15th anniversary and F/W ’17 event Keri Russell went all in on the cold weather clothing with her choice of hat; I’ve watched a lot of Fortitude recently and have been marveling over their very similar looking headwear to protect against the elements. It also very much nods to her show The Americans and the style of winter attire from Elizabeth’s homeland, which also happens to be back next month.

The rest of Russell’s outfit matches her casual cool vibe and I am very much feeling those boots. Walking in heels this high in the cold is something we have seen Russell do before, but it is probably a good thing that she had co-star and IRL boyfriend Matthew Rhys with her as this photo from the official Rag & Bone Instagram shows.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

15 Jan

A red carpet heavy week with pre-Globes, other awardsthe main event, after parties and TCA with some people pretty much attending all of these. We’re going to concentrate on mostly TCA and after party sartorial delights with a dash of the Marie Claire Image Makers celebration.

Rami MalekRami Malek takes the crown for best dressed dude this week slaying in everything from his button upped style to looking super sharp in Dior Homme at the Golden Globes. Stylist Ilaria Urbinati is one of my favorites especially when it comes to menswear and she gave a rundown of the getting ready process for GQ, which includes Rami in a very lovely striped sweater. At the Mr Robot TCA panel he shows that he can also do the suit with tie thing in Calvin Klein rounding off this excellent week.

Carly ChaikinMr Robot is also killing it in the lady style stakes and Carly Chaikin’s AFI floral number was another high point of this very busy period (see also Portia Doubleday’s Golden Globes disco ball frock). Chaikin’s got another winner here in polka dot Jill Stuart and this is when a little bit of sheer totally works.

Jessica St. Clair and Lennon ParhamIn surprising good news from the USA Network panel it was announced yesterday that Playing House has been renewed for a third season and I’m so happy about this as I really need more of this wonderful show. Bold block colors were on trend at the Golden Globes and creators/stars Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham both look fabulous in this style choice.

Juliet Lewis TCAA classic floral frock for Juliette Lewis at the Disney/ABC TCA day and a very muted prelude to the cracked out brilliance of what she would be wearing later that day.

Kristen StewartUltimate Kristen Stewart red carpet attire at the first annual Marie Claire Image Makers event and everything about this from the coat to the metallic detail on her Sally LaPointe is perfect. Stewart was there to honor makeup artist Jillian Dempsey and her hair stylist Adir Abergel was also getting recognized.

Aja Naomi KingThe length is awkward, but this color looks amazing on How to Get Away with Murder’s Aja Naomi King. Plus it has pockets!

Honourable WomanI know I’ve already written about Maggie Gyllenhaal’s art deco looking Marc Jacobs dress (which I still adore), but I couldn’t resist this Honourable Woman reunion with Tobias Menzies at the HBO Golden Globes after party.

Carrie Brownstein, Gaby HoffmannSo here for the size of Gaby Hoffmann’s hair – Ali’s hair on Transparent in season 2 reaches new heights of everything – her dress, which at first I thought might be a jumpsuit and Carrie Brownstein’s oh so amazing patterned frock/general super cool vibe. Amazon Head of Comedy Joe Lewis looks rather pleased and swish at the Amazon Golden Globes celebration and I’m guessing that has a little something to do with the Mozart in the Jungle double win.Laverne CoxOh HBO, your backdrop is like the wallpaper I wish I had, but would immediately regret and it very much works with Laverne Cox switching one incredible white gown for another in custom Mark Zunino; adding her to the list of caped wonders.

Kathryn HahnAnd this is where the choice of posing wall pattern makes it feel like you are looking at a Magic Eye picture and therefore giving me a rage induced headache because I could never see the sailboat or whatever. I do like Kathryn Hahn’s dress despite the optical obstacle.

Transparent HBO AfterpartyEnding on Transparent chaos and another angle of this shot. Kathryn Hahn’s pose/face is everything. This looks like the later hours at a wedding.

Best of the Golden Globes 2016 Red Carpet: Tuxes, Print and Everything Else

11 Jan

Rounding off our initial Golden Globes red carpet coverage with a whole lot of dudes in tuxes plus some other frocks which don’t quite fit into sparkles, bold block color or black and white categories.

Oscar Isaac GG*waves back* Oscar Isaac really is the man of the hour and not only does he look handsome as hell in custom Rag & Bone, the curl and beard level is great AND he won for Show Me a Hero. Nothing bummed me out quite as much as the end of this David Simon miniseries and I mean that as a testament to the performance and the story. Plus Isaac managed to work a mustache and dad jeans. Not an easy task.

Jon HammAnother winner from the night from both a style and award perspective; Jon Hamm you are a dreamy delight.

David OyelowoDavid Oyelowo was a constant highlight on last year’s awards campaign and he defies my sentiment that we were just going to get a whole lot of standard tuxedos in this purple affair.

Aziz AnsariAziz Ansari is another dude we can count on as he goes for a muted twist on plaid.

Eddie RedmayneEddie Redmayne is also part of the fun suit clan and this Alexander McQueen subtle polka dot number is no exception. The lean is very much in full operation.

Rami Malek and Christian SlaterCrush from the mid-90s and current crush both looking mighty fine all suited and booted. The cast of Mr Robot is one stylish group.

Judith Light#LadySuitWatch2016 kicks off to a great start with the always amazing Judith Light.

Cate BlanchetThis Givenchy frock has a slight boudoir air about it on the sweeter end of the scale to Caitriona Balfe and this might be a Cate Blanchett magical fashion unicorn scenario.

Maggie GyllenhaalNot a whole lot of pattern on the Golden Globes red carpet this year and Maggie Gyllenhaal gets more 30s inspiration in this beautiful Marc Jacobs dress.

Maura TierneyI heart everything about Maura Tierney so I was very pleased to see her win and that she wore her glasses up on stage.

TransparentThis seems like the best way to finish today’s Golden Globes red carpet coverage with a whole lot of Transparent infused chaos.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

8 Jan

Happy First “Out of the Box” of 2016 and award season is taking over with a dash of the winter TCA and the first stunning magazine cover of the year. Now is not the time to go big on the red carpet because there’s still plenty of dress/tux wearing time to go, but there is plenty to love about this week’s offerings including the two big trends; lots of green and pattern clashing.

Brie Larson and Jacob TemblayI mentioned earlier this week that we would be seeing a lot more of Brie Larson on here and I’m making good on this promise with a double outfit entry from Larson. First up at the Palm Springs International Film Festival she wore this simple emerald green Jason Wu dress to pick up the Breakthrough Performance Award. Accompanied by her Room co-star Jacob Tremblay showing that being a kid doesn’t mean you can’t look dapper (and super adorable to boot) in a tux.

Saoirse RonanAnother award recipient at the Palm Springs festivities and Saoirse Ronan took home the International Star Award for her magnificent turn in Brooklyn. Here is where the pattern clashing might enter ‘too much’ territory, but I love this Duro Olowu frock and it is the right amount of chaos for me especially as she paired it with just as bright orange sandals. There’s nothing beige about this look.

Brie LarsonBack to Brie Larson and this Giambattista Valli Haute Couture dress mixes pattern and texture in a way that shouldn’t work, but does (although I have a feeling there will be some who disagree with me on this one). It’s like someone deep dived into Alice in Wonderland and came up with this.

Jessica ChastainMore emerald green and it might be a safe bet pairing this color with a redhead, but it doesn’t stop it being a winning formula as Jessica Chastain demonstrates at the National Board of Review Gala in satin Carl Kapp.

Peter Sarsgaard and Magie GyllenghaalLooking super loved up on the NBR red carpet and showing that a black dress can be the killer option is Maggie Gyllenhaal with husband Peter Sarsgaard. Her hair looks fantastic and The Row frock blends 30s and 70s cool.

Claire Danes and Hugh DancyOver at the People’s Choice Awards (which always makes me think of this Comeback episode) and brightening up proceedings are another TV Ate My Wardrobe couple fave; Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy always look great together even if his haircut is a little too short for my taste. I assume it is for his new show The Path, but I miss his Will Graham slight unruly wave. Danes looks fabulous in metallic Burberry and I guess this will have to make up for the lack of Golden Globes nomination and therefore non-red carpet appearance this weekend.

Julianna Moore and Kristen StewartOne final green entry and another redhead in this color and Julianne Moore looks casual cool at the New York Film Critics’ Circle Awards presenting Kristen Stewart – slaying in Chanel leather and lace – with Best Supporting Actress for Clouds of Sils Maria. Over at Vulture they present the case of why this pair are the BFFs we never knew we wanted and yep I am down with that.

Amandla Stenberg Teen VogueAmandla Stenberg covers the new issue of Teen Vogue and it is both a fantastic photo editorial and conversation with Solange Knowles discussing her school video project on cultural appropriation “Don’t Cash Crop My Cornrows,” which went viral and made sure people knew Stenberg was someone to pay attention to. They also talk about the horrific comments that were made when she was cast in The Hunger Games, feeling comfortable in her own skin, besties Kiernan Shipka, Willow Smith and Tavi Gevinson, plus future projects.

To read the full interview and see more fabulous photos from the shoot head here. This is better than any recent Vogue cover I can remember and their editorial team should take note.

Scott SpeedmanBecause I’m not going to deny you Scott Speedman’s bare ankles at the Animal Kingdom TCA panel.

Constance ZimmerA slightly random TCA note to end on, but here is Constance Zimmer (who was there on UnREAL duty – so excited for S2) looking as happy as you should be when playing with a dog. I also appreciate the close up on those heels which glam up her outfit.

Best of the Emmy Red Carpet – Bold Color and Print

21 Sep

Pink was not the only color on the Emmy red carpet and this is one of the brightest and boldest displays in recent years with a lot less monochromatic offerings. We’ve given you sparkle, now here are some patterned treats.

Ellie KemperEllie Kemper didn’t get nominated for The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, but she more than makes up for this in a stunning multi-color Naeem Khan dress; definitely a top 5 pick.

Zoe KazanBetween Ellie Kemper and Zoe Kazan I am getting rather mesmerized by their frocks; Kazan’s red and white Miu Miu is perfect for her twee styling, which I adore. Red lipstick points ahoy!

Laverne CoxA flawless look for Laverne Cox in a teal Calvin Klein Collection dress.

Mindy KalingCanary gowns will forever have to stand up to the Best Oscar Gown and Mindy Kaling’s custom Salavador Perez is definitely striking and the highlight of the 2015 Emmy yellow frock push.

Lauren LapkusThe pattern, cut and color is gorgeous on Lauren Lapkus and I would love it if she returned to Orange is the New Black.

Kristen SchaalKristen Schaal and Lauren Lapkus could definitely play sisters and someone should get on that. Meanwhile Kristen Schaal is resplendent in shimmering Rubin Singer.

Judith LightJudith Light slaying in floral Zac Posen.

Maggie GyllenhaalGoing for big colorful ball gown Oscar de la Renta and Maggie Gyllenhaal doesn’t over accessorize this already dramatic look.

Kiernan ShipkaWe’ve entered the “I don’t know why Dior keep doing this” portion and I’m including this to show that Kiernan Shipka is very much a Magical Fashion Unicorn, but she deserves so much better than this.

January JonesThe same can be said for January Jones and she is certainly working the Ulyana Sergeenko Couture jumpsuit, but the draping is causing me to pull all kinds of confused faces. The color and brooch are stunning and yet I really wish this was a dress or a slightly more tailored jumpsuit.

January and ElisabethIn fact from behind it looks better and this shot with former co-star Elisabeth Moss is giving me all the feelings.

Danielle BrooksA twirling dream from Danielle Brooks in pleated custom Christian Siriano. Whenever I wear a pleated skirt or dress I spend half my day twirling. I don’t get much done.

Emily RobinsonThe cut of Emily Robinson’s Kayat gown reminds me of Caitlin Fitzgerald at the Golden Globes and it is working just as well for Robinson in this delicate print.

Chelsea Peretti and Jordan PeeleBest couple alert! A fun floral contrast from Chelsea Peretti in Gabriela Cadena and Jordan Peele doing the standard tuxedo thing.

Teyonah ParrisTeyonah Parris twirls in Francesca Miranda polka dots in this stunning mid-action shot.

Viola Davis EmmyClosing our Emmy gown rundown with THE moment of the night and Viola Davis winning Best Actress in a Drama. The Carmen Marc Valvo dress is amazing, her speech is better and you can watch it below.

Best of the Pre-Emmys Parties – The Frocks

19 Sep

If the pre-Emmys parties are anything to go on then we are in for a treat tomorrow as there are plenty of fabulous outfits on display from #LadySuitWatch2015 to the patterned and super chic dresses below. There’s a strong element of fun at these parties as everyone is relaxed (or at least pretending to be) prior to the big show. This color, print and the caped sleeves makes Troian Bellisario an instant standout. Plus she’s pulling off what could be an awkward length. Plenty of fantastic cute above the knee frocks including Constance Zimmer’s long sleeve black and white floral delight. Currently suffering from UnREAL withdrawal.More florals and an 80s prom feel from Sarah Hyland in Oscar de la Renta. All this needs to complete this theme (or probably doesn’t) is a giant bow. Pockets! And a romantic take on this on trend from Grey’s Anatomy’s Camilla Luddington wearing an A.L.C. dress and Stuart Weitzman heels. Tina Majorino is still rocking one of my fave short hair styles (and I might be biased, but I love a short haircut) and she looks flawless in embellished metallics. A lace delight from Zoe Lister-Jones and a berry lip color I’m now adding to my Wish List (when I find out the shade/brand).   Zoe Kazan’s dress is a patchwork perfection and bf Paul Dano looks dashing in all the brown with a hint of blue. I got Olive Kitteridge on DVD (yes I still get those) for my birthday and I’m really looking forward to having my heart broken all over again. The amazing colourful prints continue with Yvette Nicole Brown in Eliza J. Color blocks for Erinn Hayes and this is giving me all the 70s really cool party vibes. Another ensemble that’s reading my favorite fashion decade (I’m so fine with the heavy 70s influence right now) and Maggie Gyllenhaal needs a cocktail to complete this look.  Getting a Cabaret feeling from Gwendoline Christie’s robe like dress and only Christie can wear something like this and induce all the gleeful clapping.A fun play on black fit and flare with Jane Krawkowski adding a touch of stripes to a classic style.
This is a really great silhouette on Christina Hendricks and another black dress triumph. I toyed with putting Danielle Brooks in the #LadySuitWatch2015 post as this Lafayette 148 New York dress is tuxedo inspired, but it doesn’t really matter whichever list Brooks goes on as she looks incredible either way.

Drama Actress Emmy Roundtable – “I Want to Play Everything I’ve Never Played Before” (Update! Watch the Full Video)

11 Jun

This is the one I have been waiting for and every year the drama actress roundtable is the highlight of The Hollywood Reporter’s Emmy series. It might be a premature declaration as there are still more discussions to come as part of this season, but I am pretty confident in this assertion after reading the transcript and watching the clips which have been made available prior to SundanceTV airing it in full come August (Update – you can now watch the full discussion at the end of this post). I do want to point to the comedy actress chat as another enlightening and fascinating entry into the roundtable Hall of Fame. And now there is another group to add to my boozy lunch wish list.

The line-up is entirely different to last year (sometimes there are repeats) with Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Honourable Woman), Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder), Taraji P. Henson (Empire), Jessica Lange (American Horror Story), Ruth Wilson (The Affair) and Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex). Gone are the questions of ‘how do you balance work and family?’ and instead there is a strong focus on their work from the shows they are currently on to past experiences. There are four Oscar nominees among these women (some multiple) and a two time winner showing the caliber of talent television attracts particularly when it comes to complex roles for women. A mixture of cable and network with ages ranging from 32 to 66 shows how well television caters to a range of experiences.

THRAs the cover so boldly states there is a focus on race, sex, age and nudity with the latter coming up on multiple occasions. Lizzy Caplan and Ruth Wilson joke about the name of their network – “Showtits” – and sex plays a big part in both Masters of Sex (it is in the title after all) and The Affair. Sex isn’t just there for sensationalism or to be gratuitous; it is worth noting that both shows have a female showrunner with Caplan going so far as pointing out that Michelle Ashford is kinda prudish and those scenes can be hard for all involved.

How to Get Away with Murder is Viola Davis’ first starring role on prime time and she talks about her initial concerns when she took the project on including her appearance. There is one point which really sticks with me and is worth quoting in full exemplifying why this roundtable series strikes a chord:

“I’ve been doing this for 27 years. I’ve performed in basements, churches, off-Broadway. I want the work to reflect my level of gifts and talent. I don’t want it to reflect my color, my sex or my age. That’s what I want most.”

The comedy actresses talked about bad auditions and incidents earlier in their careers where they maybe tried to adjust their look for an audition. This is something Maggie Gyllenhaal discusses in terms of her appearance and how she has been judged in the past in terms of being ‘sexy.’ Gyllenhaal also mentions her interest in nudity and what she looks for in a sex scene.

Cookie Lyon has made such a huge impact on the TV landscape this season and Taraji P. Henson jokes “I hate that bitch. She’s stolen my identity! My friends don’t want to talk to me unless it’s about Cookie.” I’m only halfway through Empire but within the first few minutes of seeing this character on screen it was love. Henson also reveals who she sometimes channels when she is playing Cookie and the answer is not who you might expect. There are no boundaries when it comes to want roles Henson wants to play “I want to play a superhero. I want to be a Bond girl. I want to play a man. I want to play a white woman. I want to play everything I’ve never played before.”

There are more clips to watch here before the full thing becomes available in August.

THR drama actress roundtableIn terms of the styling of the group it turns out I wasn’t proved wrong after all with an explosion of sparkle and while Ruth Wilson is the lone person in print (a beautiful Erdem frock), there is some color with Viola Davis’ Lanvin and range of styles suiting the wearer in question. Lizzy Caplan’s Donna Karan ensemble is reminiscent of her Donna Karan Atelier Emmy stunner from last year (Caplan also chose this designer when she wowed at the Met Gala last month). During the chat Caplan wears an oversized tuxedo jacket and looks super cool while doing so. Excellent lipstick game from all the ladies with Caplan’s fuchsia reminding me of my new favorite lip color. And now if you will excuse me I will be drawing hearts around this entire conversation.

Check back for more Emmy related discussions in the weeks/months to come.

Update! Watch the full uncensored Emmy Drama Actress roundtable below.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

5 Jun

Despite how much print has been in decline in recent years magazine covers still possess the power to make a huge impact and the July issue of Vanity Fair demonstrates just how important old media still is (while being unveiled on social media). This has also been an awards show filled week with the Peabody and Glamour Women of the Year celebrations taking place. Plus all your polo watching sartorial needs are covered.

Caitlyn JennerHi Caitlyn, it is so good to meet you! This is a stunning cover for many reasons and while plenty has been said about how amazing Caitlyn Jenner looks all glammed up it is also important to remember this is about far more than just external beauty. Laverne Cox addresses this on her Tumblr and it is essential reading.

EssenceSpeaking of Laverne Cox here is she is with some of her Orange is the New Black co-stars (just one week until new episodes!) on the cover of Essence all dressed in the color of their show. What’s great about this cover is the number of women featured (Danielle Brooks, Samira Wiley, Adrienne C. Moore, Laverne Cox, Uzo Aduba, Vicky Jeudy) and that it is celebrating ‘sexy at every size’ styling each women in a dress for their figure. Body positive feelings happiness.

Amy Schumer and Tina FeyMoving on from magazines to awards with Amy Schumer receiving a Peabody for Inside Amy Schumer from Tina Fey (on stage there was smooching) with both ladies opting for black. Schumer’s LBD is tuxedo inspired which automatically gets all the points from me.

Kerry WashingtonThe UK Glamour Women of the Year Awards look like a whole lot of fun if the Instagram shots are anything to go by and this is reflected in the red carpet attire with Kerry Washington going for 70s disco infused tube top and glitzy David Koma skirt. Now I want to go out dancing.

Gillian AndersonI don’t know if I would love this on anyone but Gillian Anderson and a tulle cape is so playful and so dramatic that I can’t not smile. Extra giddiness comes from the return of Hannibal last night and all the incredible Bedelia costuming.

Emma WillisSimple chic from Emma Willis and she never disappoints on the red carpet. While it isn’t quite Roksanda levels of stunning as last year’s the blue neck detail and texture elevates it.

Diane Kruger and Joshua JacksonTV Ate My Wardrobe’s official Best Dressed Couple crown wearers continue to please in every single way with Diane Kruger’s magical fashion unicorn status remaining intact in vintage Roland Mouret at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. Joshua Jackson’s grey suit is impeccable and there are no words to describe how he is looking at her.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, Ruth Wilson, Emma RobertsCulottes are a returning trend that has me invoking a loud WHY?! but Ruth Wilson is making me consider them as a fashion choice because she manages to look pretty damn cool while watching polo last weekend. Basically this event includes actresses wearing clothes I might normally be dismissive of that on this occasion look super cool. Maggie Gyllenhaal is working a pink suit with a white crop top with a pair of highly covetable sunglasses. And Emma Roberts’ yellow dress is something I would like in any sun soaked setting. Cute leopard print bag too.

Best of the 2015 Critics’ Choice Awards Red Carpet

1 Jun

TV Award season is here and to kick things off we have the Critics’ Choice Awards. Around March I get a little bit of red carpet fatigue after a long succession of award shows; now this has subsided and once again fancy frocks are what I crave. The Critics’ Choice is a fun one as it is neither full on nor is it as casual as a TCA press tour or PaleyFest.

You're the Worst Critics' ChoiceThey might have lost Best Comedy to Silicon Valley, but You’re the Worst takes home the best dressed cast award (there is no actual trophy) looking dapper as fuck. Kether Donohue goes full bombshell with Aya Cash opting for one of my favorite outfit choices in a stunning hunter green lady suit. Desmin Borges and Chris Geere scrub up rather well too and can season 2 get a premiere date, please?

Aya CashAnd because Aya Cash looks so great in this suit here is a solo shot.

Mae WhitmanA really fun studded Alice + Olivia dress for Mae Whitman which looks like either playing connect the dots with a map of the stars or a funky scientific diagram of a leaf. Either way, I love it.

Judy GreerJudy Greer carries off an awkward mid-length with aplomb in this beautiful blue print. Bonus red lipstick points at the ready.

Maggie GyllenhaalGoing full summer florals and looking stunning is Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Chelsea PerettiColor blocking in satin isn’t always easy to do, but Chelsea Peretti works it. The shoulder capping detail and additional color from the clutch equal a couple of prayer hands emojis.

Taraji P HensonTaraji P. Henson took home Best Drama Actress and while I am only 5 episodes into Empire, I am obsessed with all things Cookie. Also with Henson’s purple lip color.

Gina RodriguezMulti-textured is what I need for this much sheer to work and the bodice detail on Gina Rodriguez’s Reem Acra Couture is stunning.

Ivonne CollIt must run in the Jane the Virgin family as here is Ivonne Coll also looking super classy in a black gown.

Carrie BrownsteinPolka dot halter dress hits my sweet spot, but it is Carrie Brownstein’s gold tipped heels and red lipstick which I can’t get enough of.

Judith LightJudith Light, killing it as always.

Carrie CoonNo Best Supporting Actress for Carrie Coon (went to the equally deserving Lorraine Toussaint for OITNB); however she looks fantastic in burgundy.

Yvonne StrahovskiThere’s not much to Yvonne Strahovski column of cerulean blue, but this color is stunning on her and I am so ready to see her in wearing 60s attire in The Astronauts Wives Club.

Holly TaylorThe Americans won Best Drama (!) and Holly Taylor’s red rose infused Don O’Neill gown avoids leaning towards the overwhelming side thanks to the subtle cut outs.

Clea DuvallClea DuVall closes this red carpet (or rather blue carpet) in a green blazer and while this tips towards the too casual end of the scale this wins me over for lady suit and every 90s teen movie reasons.

To watch the acceptance speeches from the 5th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards head here.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

22 May

The TV season might be coming to an end as many shows have aired their finales over the last few weeks, but there are plenty of red carpet events and screenings as Emmy chatter is only just beginning. One of the major events this week was of course the end of Mad Men (and you can read all my tear stained thoughts here) and another chance for the cast to show off their sartorial prowess. While we have already documented Mindy Kaling’s Cannes fashion parade there are a few more pretty frocks to show off.

Kiernan ShipkaKiernan Shipka has been a revelation in her performance as Sally Draper and I really can’t wait to see what she does next. She has also consistently been the best dressed cast member and she’s still only 15. Please Hollywood, treat her kindly. At the Film Independent screening of Mad Men she wore a very cute Valentino white ruffled frock which complements both her age and look.

Elisabeth MossAs with Peggy Olson, Elisabeth Moss has really upped her style game over the last few years and this is a simple and fun outfit. The metallic belting is an edgy touch and I love the splash of color with the orange peep-toe pumps, even if they don’t entirely go with the rest of the ensemble.

Amy PoehlerBack to Cannes and the Inside Out premiere with another metallic belted beauty; Amy Poehler sticks with Stella McCartney and it pays off.

Melanie LaurentThe Cannes red carpet photos have a habit of looking both overwhelming and incredibly romantic in a classic movie star way. This shot of Melanie Laurent falls in the latter camp and her super sparkly Zuhair Murad Couture beaded frock is adding to this effect.

Diane KrugerAnother Cannes stunner and TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite; Diane Kruger has gone for an ethereal Prada frock for the Maryland premiere. Here she is with co-star Matthias Schoenaerts who, in not shocking news scrubs up well for the red carpet (everyone should go see Far From the Madding Crowd which is very good for reasons that also include Schoenaerts).

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter SarsgaardMaggie Gyllenhaal is deservedly once again receiving praise and accolades for her portrayal of Nessa Stein in last year’s exceptional mini-series The Honourable Woman including at this week’s 40th Annual Gracie Awards. Wearing a super chic black Alexander McQueen gown with killer cuff detail and red lipstick to swoon over Gyllenhaal poses with husband Peter Sarsgaard.

This has been a week where actresses have been confirming how awful Hollywood can be with Gyllenhaal’s comments about how she is too old at 37 to play a love interest for a 55-year-old – Amy Schumer’s ‘Last Fuckable Day‘ sketch is far too real –  and Salma Hayek spoke at length about the many obstacles she has faced in this industry.

Chelsea PerettiIt’s not just Chelsea Peretti’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine character Gina that gets all the style love from us here and at the Webby Awards where Peretti won Outstanding Comedic Performance (for the Netflix special Chelsea Peretti: One of the Greats) she wore a super hypnotic all the stripes Mason by Michelle Mason frock.

Rose ByrneKeeping things casual cool on the Red Nose Day red carpet is Rose Byrne. Those pants look like they could be satin and yet somehow she is making them work.

Kerry WashingtonAt the Disney International Upfronts Kerry Washington also goes for a relaxed funky outfit and what appears to be a sweater and skirt is actually an Alexander Lewis dress. The green shimmer from her Le Silla shoes goes wonders with the metallic stripes.

OITNBThis Orange is the New Black group photo at a For Your Consideration screening and Q & A this week is delightful for several reasons including 1) Jenji Kohan’s dress, 2) so many good outfits/range of styles and 3) as a reminder that the new season is less than a month away.
