Best of TV Costuming 2014: Best of the Rest – From Statement Necklaces to Wedding Gowns

30 Dec

Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2014″ costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items that we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking, we want to look at this year’s TV through the prism of costume.

So far the end of year “Best of” discussions have covered a lot of individual shows such as The AmericansHannibal and The Good Wife, along with certain trends such as leather jackets and now comes the quick-fire roundup of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s best of everything else such as accessories, special occasion gowns and even modes of transport. It is a chance to address some our favorite shows and looks of 2014.

Best Statement Necklace Wearer

The Good Wife 6.02 DianeThere can only be one winner of this and The Good Wife’s Diane Lockhart wears chain necklaces like no other. She also has a very fine collection of antique broaches/pins and a stare that can stop you dead in your tracks.

Best Fancy Hat

Hannibal - Season 2Freddie Lounds take on court attire was even better than Hannibal checking out his own butt as he got ready for Will’s trial. This hat reads more day at the races or wedding and isn’t really court appropriate unless she is starring in a remake of His Girl Friday.

Best Casual Hat

IMG_0770I never thought I would pick a trucker hat to appear on a ‘best of’ but Orphan Black managed to turn one into a symbol of love as Helena shared her first dance and smooch with the adorable Jesse. This love token has been dropped and all she is left with is a beanie to stuff her hair into.

Best Sunglasses

You're the WorstI can’t believe this is the first time I am talking about You’re the Worst on TV Ate My Wardrobe and Gretchen’s face in the shot above sums up how ridiculous that is. Plus her Ray-Ban Opal Yellow Wayfarers are super awesome and perfect for all kinds of hungover sunny days.

Best Sweaters

Gina B99 Wolfie sweaterAnother slam dunk as Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Gina has excellent sweater game week in, week out including an excellent double wolfie turtleneck from the most recent episode. There might have been more competition if Robyn hadn’t mysteriously become a character who exists in the off screen wilderness on The Good Wife.

Best Tights

SelfieNobody does patterned tights quite like Selfie’s Eliza and now is also a good time to sadly bid adieu to yet another comedy show that was the perfect mix of funny, sweet and sharp. So long Eliza and Henry; you deserve more than this.

Best Bathrobes

IMG_1161Going from the sanitized hospital location with the stiff blue robes to something more decadent with quality hotel bathrobes and in Masters of Sex’s best episode this season “Fight” Bill and Virginia spent a rather sizable portion laying their souls bare while wearing this garment.

Best Late Night Drinking

HomelandOkay so this one isn’t about what a character is wearing, instead it is the manner in which this scene in the Homeland finale showcased the best of what has been a mostly very enjoyable season leaving behind the mess of almost all things Brody. There’s an initial awkwardness from Lockhart that turns into a moment of warmth thanks to a shared horrific experience and drinking whiskey from paper cups.

Best Mode of Transport Part 1

IMG_1160Lucy’s beautiful blue bike wouldn’t look out of place now as retro bicycles are on trend and it also symbolizes freedom for both Lucy – she doesn’t have to rely on a man for transport – and Thack as he experiences a non-drug induced pleasure when he takes it for a spin on The Knick.

Best Mode of Transport Part 2

The Comeback 2.08The Comeback has been a pleasure to experience even when watching through fingers or with constant Home Alone face and the season finale is just as exceptional. Valerie Cherish is my everything especially when she has to avoid a shit covered front yard and gets carried in her Emmy gown by a shirtless Brad Goreski and her publicist Billy.

Best Hoodie to Hide in

Broad City 1.08 drawstring hoodieThere is a lot to love about the costuming on Broad City and one of Abbi’s most practical pieces is this drawstring hoodie (as with April Ludgate’s mustard hoodie I am still on the hunt for it) which doubles as a Bevers blocker.

Best Dress for Time Travel

Otlander Claire blanketConfession – I still need to watch beyond episode 3 of Outlander and it is one of those shows that I just fell behind on. Claire’s 1940s simple white keyhole dress didn’t seem totally out of place for the 18th century time period she found herself in during the pilot and this allowed her to blend in as best she could without betraying the original post-World War II setting. I really need to catch up on this, don’t I?

Best Wedding Gown

Margaery GOTAnother wedding didn’t go so well (or it actually worked out better for the bride) on Game of Thrones, but that can’t take away from the exquisite beauty and detail of Margaery’s gown. The rose embellished train is stunning.

Best Business Wear

BBC2 drama The Honourable WomanOn The Honourable Woman Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Nessa Stein has a wardrobe that contains endless billowy silk blouses and everything is super chic and well tailored. Pieces that stand out include the Roland Mouret leopard jacquard dress from the first episode and pretty much every item acts as some kind of armor between Nessa and the messiness of the world she is part of. Yep even those silk blouses represent both supreme business wear and a way to protect herself.

Best Pattern Clashing

IMG_1014Mindy wins this one hands down.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

4 Dec

Welcome once again to Behind the Insta-Scenes! Bringing you a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off) antics.

In the last edition we did something slightly different and basked in the brilliance of Diane Kruger; regular service resumes this week and we’ve got a whole bunch of photos from various shows. This includes festive decorations, birthday celebrations, future guest stars and a scary figure. Plus a few off set interactions that made us a little giddy.

“We are both clearly doing the Edith Piaf here.” Kat Dennings captures her last appearance on Craig Ferguson in style. I’m really going to miss his very special way of talk show hosting/interviewing.

http://instagram.com/p/wHVgDOgVCy/?modal=true

Spy Daddy! Yep feeling pretty excited about Victor Garber guest appearing on The Flash. A+ coat, sweater, shirt layering from both Gustin and Garber.

Happy Holidays from Comedy Central with Abbi and Ilana in festive sweater vests. The Broad City ladies dish out some helpful party tips in this very funny video and not only is season one now out on DVD, but the show is back in just over a month!

I saw Lyndie Greenwood’s photo before watching the Sleepy Hollow mid-season finale and wondered why Jenny would be carrying so much rope forgetting how much this show loves tree branches. Moloch would totally fit in over at Hannibal.

Birthday cake and another excellent Joan dress for Lucy Liu on Elementary.

http://instagram.com/p/v7UaOupQ12/?modal=true

An offset photo and one from over Thanksgiving. Scott Speedman playing ping pong with Ike Barinholtz. Good white shirt action.

http://instagram.com/p/wKNsMrP48n/?modal=true

A super close up on New Girl’s Max Greenfield pulling the Schmidtist of faces.

How to decorate your tree Orphan Black style with angel wings, trucker hats of beaus past, a doll that resembles a certain clone, mini portraits a la Felix’s creations and some all important DNA double helix strands.

Another off set encounter, but I wasn’t going to leave off this adorable Stark sister reunion from the super smiley Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams. Very much digging Williams’ lipstick color too.

Tips for Surviving Holiday Parties from Broad City

1 Dec

The festive season is upon us and Broad City returns next month/next year (delete which one sounds less scary – every happy face/dancing emoji it is back so soon/terrified 2014 is almost done). Comedy Central have gifted us with a holiday treat from Abbi and Ilana as they offer up some tips for surviving this party season including the all important how to avoid mistletoe kisses from “a mansplaining creep.”

Four and three and two and one!

Coming in 2015: TV Promo Roundup

13 Nov

The year isn’t over and yet we are already looking to January 2015 thanks to these promos from Comedy Central and HBO for their returning and brand new offerings coming in the new year.

http://youtu.be/NhvBC-Ml01E

Abbi and Ilana are back with colorful (and super dark) lipsticks, crop tops aplenty, a white power suit and a surprise appearance by a leopard print fascinator. Commence the Broad City dance party now as season 2 looks set to deliver once again on the funny and getting fucked up antics of a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite lady friendship. Broad City returns Wednesday, January 14.

From the Duplass brothers comes Togetherness and it’s going to be part of the Girls/Looking Sunday night block (starting January 11) which makes sense as it is another figuring out your shit tragic comedy/dramedy (or whatever we are now calling this genre). The cast/creators is why I am very excited and Amanda Peet’s line delivery at the end of the promo is perfect.

http://youtu.be/ott9VndhVEo

Looking gets the most teasery of teases with no episode footage and what comes down to a disco light party reminding us that Patrick is caught in a love triangle with Richie and Kevin. Plus there’s a whole lot of amazing facial hair. Season 2 gets an episode number bump with two more than last year and I’m looking forward to spending more time with these characters.

http://youtu.be/kB8y4Zp9UNc

Getting the longest preview treatment is Girls and this makes sense considering it has been on the longest; the characters are more established and there’s less mystery. Hannah’s moved to Iowa and she’s eating grapes for a snack, but this still leaves plenty of room for bad decisions and arguments aplenty. Marnie is still pining after Desi, Shoshanna is having a career/life crisis and a couple of people are getting arrested. Plus dancing, there’s always dancing.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

7 Nov

The start of the month brings magazines galore with cover shoots and editorials making the “Out of the Box” list alongside talk show and red carpet appearances.

Natalie Dormer FlareNatalie Dormer covers Flare and I’m pretty excited to see what she will bring style wise to the Mockingjay press tour that is about to dominate red carpet coverage. For now Dormer is still showing off the remnants of her Hunger Games dramatic hair style and wearing a daring knockout dress that I would love to see come premiere time.

In the interview Dormer offers up some opinion on the different types of roles there are and it is refreshing to see a lack of sugar-coating “We don’t accept women as antiheroes the way we do the men. Unless there’s a family get-out clause. We accept women being complete cunts if they’re doing it for a child.” She also loves playing Moriarty on Elementary and she is very happy with her Game of Thrones character as “The beautiful thing about Margaery is that even though she keeps getting married, she’s not defined by a love interest. And Cressida is defined by her profession and her political beliefs. Since Anne Boleyn, I haven’t played a woman who’s defined by romantic love.”

TimeOutTime Out New York dedicates this week’s issue to comedy with a focus on the “funny women taking over NYC.” This includes Jessica Williams, SNL’s Sasheer Zamata, new Broad City writer Kara Klenk plus Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer. There’s the Catch-22 aspect of why do we have to do a gender specific comedy issue, but at the same time having a cover like this that doesn’t ask “Are Women Funny?” is an improvement.

Claire Danes GlamourBack to editorial and Claire Danes covers the December issues of UK Glamour and wears this fantastic Dolce & Gabbana squirrel skirt and lace top. In the interview she talks ’90s fashion and her explanation bears an echo of an Angela Chase voiceover “I wore a lot of overalls. Baggy clothes were very convenient for my generation. Our bodies were undergoing a terrifying metamorphosis, so it was a relief to put a bag over it all, hide in a sea of clothes.”

Eve HewsonThe Knick’s Eve Hewson attended the Dior hosted Guggenheim International Gala Pre-Party on Wednesday in (and this is not surprising) Dior. Not only does this dress earn the pocket points, it is also a fun play on tweed. I often have black tights dress quandaries (when it hits colder temps I tend to wear them with certain dresses and just say fuck it) and here they don’t detract from the look so maybe I will be less black tights nervy in the future.

Lucy HaleLucy Hale is stunning in red at the CMA Awards and this Romona Keveza frock might be a style best for the Pretty Little Liars star.

Lisa Kudrow Comeback premiereIt is worth repeating that I am beyond excited for the return of The Comeback and at the premiere Lisa Kudrow looks elegant in a Reem Acra dress. The Valerie hair behind her gives her volume that almost reaches Kacey Musgraves CMA Awards heights.

Felicity Jones FallonRounding things off this week with a spin on menswear and Felicity Jones appeared on The Tonight Show this week in a beautiful Dior suit and skinny tie.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

6 Nov

Welcome once again to Behind the Insta-Scenes! A new feature offering a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off set) antics.

Halloween dress up from last week (Michael Sheen and Sarah Silverman are still my Halloween costume faves), heading out of town, baby animals and Christmas comes early when you’re shooting a TV show. Plus various other on set hijinks.

http://instagram.com/p/u6tNbRpXn3/?modal=true

I have no idea what Steven Pasquale is doing with his arms in this shot, but here is the Alicia Florrick campaign team including the very best body woman there is.

http://instagram.com/p/vAdrwdipek/?modal=true

Broad City Live is very much a thing I would want to see. For now here is a picture of Ilana on the tour bus and the second season has been given a premiere date – January 14. Happy New Year indeed!

It’s all smiles on the Elementary set between Sherlock’s former and current protege. Instantly loving the difference in style between Kitty and Joan.

More from Elementary as Indiana Jones, Melanie Daniels and Maverick all made an appearance for Halloween.

http://instagram.com/p/u9lCKXNMyi/?modal=true

Hannah Simone was on Conan this week and animal expert David Mizejewski appeared the same night; hence the super cute piglet. Simone’s expression and dress are both on point.

Another shot of Hannah Simone this time from New Girl makeup artist Jorjee Douglass showing Michelle DeMilt working with Simone during a bar scene (for New Girl makeup tips head here).

The Orange is the New Black ladies are prolific Instagram users and it makes me so happy when a group photo like this one is posted. Thanks Uzo Aduba!

It is only the Best Fucking News Team and after a trip to Austin last week, The Daily Show went live (as did The Colbert Report) for the midterm election results. Doing their best Queen album cover shot.

Christmas has come to The Mindy Project and this means super sparkly dresses are on the styling menu with Kaling wearing an original creation by costume designer Salvador Perez.

Best of New York Comic-Con 2014 Style

14 Oct

New York Comic-Con took place over the weekend and the types of shows it attracted went beyond the usual sci-fi and fantasy offerings that you might expect from this kind of event. So while Netflix took the opportunity to show off photos and footage from Daredevil you could also catch up with the Broad City ladies and the spies from The Americans. While not on the same scale as SDCC, there is still plenty for us to pour over including the aforementioned Daredevil debut (alas the footage was for attendants only).

Comic-Con attire tends to straddle cute/casual/relaxed and the dress code is neither one specific thing nor another. Even a jumpsuit makes the style hit list.

Charlie CoxLet’s start with Daredevil and Charlie Cox will be taking on the Matt Murdock mantle on Netflix (no release date yet); here he is working the super smile, beard and a denim shirt. The reddish toned hair is all part of the Matt Murdock look and Cox landing this lead role has me very excited about this project. Plus his time on Boardwalk Empire showed he was capable of playing both the fearsome and romantic side. If only he could use the Owen Irish accent on this show.

DaredevilAnd this the first still of Cox all lawyer suited up as Matt Murdock. This is some pretty damn good tailoring and he is wearing it well, along with signature red tinted specs that have a hint of John Lennon.

Deborah Ann WollSwapping Bon Temps for Hell’s Kitchen is Deborah Ann Woll; I am thrilled to see her score something like this after True Blood and I hope she gets to be more than just a love interest. A simple chic cornflower blue dress and the slightly different toned blue sandals avoid matchy matchy status.

The AmericansThe Americans cast and showrunners didn’t reveal much of anything about the next season (which starts shooting this week), but they did wear matching ‘Commie Con’ t-shirts (Matthew Rhys’ idea) compete with the ‘C’ as a hammer and sickle. Both Keri Russell and Annet Mahendru jazzed their looks up; Russell staying all black with a leather mini, blazer and stilettos and Mahendru rocking boots and the lip embellished Alice + Olivia skirt (also worn by Jamie Chung at NYFW).

Keri Russell and Matthew RhysBonus Americans panel shot with a closer look at the bespoke tees. And because they are adorable.

Abbi and Ilana! Another occasion where Abbi is my style twin (I have a very similar French Connection dress) and Ilana is my style hero in a shirt that’s making me think of a Care Bears color palette. Thankfully there is “Hack into Broad City” to tide us over until January when Broad City returns.

Aisha Tyler NYCCA jumpsuit I like is rare, but Aisha Tyler’s blue slouched drawstring number is giving me all the positive feelings. Pockets plus red shoes and a bold lip color all add up to a very good outfit and strong style week for Tyler.

Judy GreerTyler’s Archer co-star Judy Greer has also opted for crimson footwear and the all-black button down shirt and suit look is working, in part thanks to this splash of color. This also reminds me that I still need to read Greer’s I Don’t Know What You Know Me From: Confessions of a Co-Star.

Katie AseltonGoing for monochrome is The League’s Katie Aselton in a simple chic black cropped sweater and a white skirt. This would come with a no drinking or eating warning due to spilling reasons.

Lyndie GreenwoodConfession – I have a bit of an eyebrow obsession and it’s always the first thing I notice about someone’s face (a timely essay from the Hairpin regarding eyebrows) and Sleepy Hollow’s Lyndie Greenwood has excellent eyebrow game and it is very evident here (this is for excellent shape and eyebrow expression usage). Peter Pan collar shirt and side braid completes this cute Comic-Con ensemble.

Hack into Broad City: Cereal War

23 Sep

Broad City isn’t back for season 2 until January (every sad face possible), but until then feast your eyes on the latest installment of “Hack into Broad City” in which Abbi and Ilana host the first annual cereal war via video chat (or “maybe it’s just an exchange of technology and culture and everybody wins). Like all good breakfast food cereal doesn’t have to be eaten first thing in the morning and it can stand for many awesome things.

Broad City

Video chat is an important part of the Ilana and Abbi friendship with Ilana going so far as doing this during sex (much to Abbi’s horror) and as “Hack into Broad City” was part of the initial web series it makes sense to throw up* some of these old videos during what feels like a lengthy hiatus. Hopefully there will be more new offerings between now and January.

*One of these chats involves actual vomit so maybe pun intended. It is below and it is gross (and also hilarious as Abbi watches through her fingers pleading her not to). It also ended up in the pilot.

In the meantime here is both the new video that first appeared on Vulture followed by a few of my favorite earlier “Hack” videos with Ilana crossing multiple boundaries. One of these actually ends up being an Abbi move in first season and as with a lot of the original content it has been adapted for the show (like the vom moment).

Out of the Box: Look of the Week Best – 2014 Critics’ Choice TV Awards

20 Jun

Dedicating this edition of Out of the Box to last night’s Critics’ Choice Awards and it is a very solid effort as the nearly twenty red carpet shots I have ready for you guys will testify. This is the first glitzy affair in the TV awards season since the Golden Globes and SAGs back in January and hopefully some of these winners (*cough* Tatiana Maslany/OITNB *cough*) will receive Emmy nominations next month.

Laverne Cox CC

Danielle Brooks

Uzo AdubaStarting with an Orange is the New Black trio with Laverne Cox, Danielle Brooks and Uzo Aduba all looking super glamorous in gowns with a hint of sparkly in a variety of styles. They picked up awards for Best Comedy Series and Uzo Aduba won for Best Guest Star in a Comedy with Kate Mulgrew tying with Allison Janney in the supporting category. I finished season 2 of OITNB this week and I expect the accolades will continue for these talented women.

Keri Russell and Diane KrugerAn FX duo getting to dress way fancier than the characters they play and Diane Kruger’s multicolored floral Elie Saab gown plays well against the metallic reptile looking J Mendel dress Keri Russell is wearing. I also never realized Diane Kruger was this tall, although who knows the height of their heels beneath their frocks.

Abbi and IlanaBroad City has been one of THE shows of 2014 so having Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer at this awards show is a must. Picking out the perfect outfit in the episode “Fattest Assess” comes to mind when picturing how they chose their dresses, as it’s pretty much my favorite shopping montage scene that wasn’t. Abbi is wearing a Cushnie et Ochs baby blue peplum frock and Ilana is in Prabul Gurung and they both look amazing.

Tatiana MaslanyTatiana Maslany is also wearing Cushnie et Ochs with a different play on the asymmetric overlay style that Jacobson is rocking as this is less peplum and more floaty thanks to the longer length. It’s a really simple and elegant look and I can’t tell you how happy it makes me that she chose a red pump over anything in the beige region. Maslany won for Orphan Black for the second year in the row, will the Emmys finally follow suit with a nomination?

Lizzy CaplanA butterfly covered Valentino gown for Lizzy Caplan and an easy highlight of the evening. Digging the side swept hair too.

Carrie BrownsteinThe top half of Carrie Brownstein’s dress is a little Star Trek (not a bad thing) and I can’t get over how radiant her smile is. Great lip color and silver heels to make this more than just an LBD.

Kat GrahamKat Graham is never boring on the red carpet and on this occasion this translates into a fabulous outfit. Opting for a navy Escada suit with mirrored detail on the jacket she also gets the amount of plunge right.

Allison JanneyPicking up two awards (for Mom and Masters of Sex) Allison Janney chose the right color to wear and she looks radiant in gold.

AnnetThis is a lot of tulle and Annet Mahendru from The Americans pulls both this and the sheer factor off without looking like she is going to prom.

Emmy RossumRocking magenta is Emmy Rossum in Monique Lhuillier and her turquoise statement Sutra earrings stops it from looking too saccharine.

Matthew RhysNow to the guys and Matthew Rhys gets points for both his beard and striped tie.

Zach WoodsIt might seem like he is in everything at the moment – not complaining – and Zach Woods looks half awkward/half adorable; so of course he deserves to be included in this feature.

MessinaChris Messina pulls off the hands in pockets, loosened tie partly because he is Chris Messina and in this moment he is looking very much how his character Danny Castellano would look at an event like this.

Matt BomerEnding with Matt Bomer seems like the appropriate way to finish “Look of the Week” as I don’t think there is anyone who wears a tux better. Bomer also deservedly won for The Normal Heart and I hope we will be seeing more of him on the awards circuit for this role.

From Web to Cannes: The Women of Broad City Talk Authenticity in Comedy (Video)

9 Apr

The Broad City team traveled to Cannes this week to take part in a MIPTV keynote speech (“The Power of Comedy: Laughing its way from online to linear”) promoting the show to the overseas market alongside Comedy Central President of Content Development & Original Programming Kent Alterman and Caroline Beaton (Viacom International Program Sales). Executive producer Amy Poehler joined Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson to discuss what has made Broad City a success so far and how it went from web series to TV.

Broad City[Source]

In the keynote (which you can watch below) the origin of the show is discussed including how the pair became friends and where the first creative sparks were ignited (in a pizza shop). The Abbi and Ilana time comes at the beginning and end of the almost 30 minute panel and there’s some slightly dry executive chat in the middle. This is where phrases such as “funny is funny” and “creative vision” are repeated and while it is exec speak it does also apply to this show.

One part of the business aspect that did peak my interest is how comedy is a much harder sell initially to different territories and how “people get scared to back things.” There’s a misconception that comedy doesn’t translate, but other Comedy Central shows like The Daily Show which could be considered as very American are enormously popular globally (hence the Global Edition, I guess). Social media is a boost to the new belief that comedy does translate with Poehler adding “I think there’s a universality about young people’s ability to tell when something isn’t authentic. In countries all over the world people are finding and needing something that feels true and real to them, and also being very suspicious when it’s not.” Lady Gaga tweeting to her 40+ million followers about how much she loves Broad City is another fabulous (and free) way to get the word out globally.

Abbi and Ilana get asked the question they will forever be asked and that is “How closes to your characters are you?” Abbi tells a very funny story about her mom ringing after seeing the finale as some of their own experiences do make it onto the show, but generally everything is a heightened and more amplified version of reality. This leads to a look at other creative aspects of the show and how far it has come since the web series including the writers’ room aspect; now they can allocate these real life stories to other writers.

Diversity is something that is demanded “in cast, in voice” and Amy Poehler references past shows that wouldn’t necessarily fit into the television landscape today or they would at least face a negative response “It’s almost impossible to have a show about New York City with six white people living in a building.” This is what “makes Broad City broad.”

You can watch the whole keynote below and for a look at the style of Broad City head here.
