NYFW Fantasy Costuming: Sally Draper in Red Valentino Fall 2015

16 Feb

Mad Men is coming to an end (*sob*) but we have time for one final Fantasy Costuming; previously we took a look at spring season threads for Megan Draper and now our attention turns towards a favorite teen fashionista, Sally Draper. Some Fantasy Costuming pieces have included items that have ended up on the shows they were picked out for and this will definitely not be the case here as a) they are not vintage b) they are not designed by Janie Bryant and c) the show wrapped some time ago. However, the Red Valentino Fall 2015 RTW collection features a range of clothes that suit both the time period to an extent and previous costumes Sally has worn.

This is going to be split into three groupings to represent different aspects of the era and Sally’s personality; as always the Fantasy Costuming selections are inspired by the costume design from the show in question – Janie Bryant – and are in no way suggesting this character should wear a specific item mentioned. Click on the thumbnails for a more looks for Sally.

Red Valentino Red Check

This is very school uniform Sally Draper – well maybe not the shoes – and Red Valentino has many plaids, flannels and checks on offer for Fall in a variety of colors. The capelets are super cute and hint at a charming youthful influence with some added tie and furry embellishments. Sally might be getting a bit too old for this style or at least she might think she is, skip to the final grouping of outfits if you want rebellious teen Sally attire.

The white tights are worn with each look and suit the sweet and sugary nature of the playful items in this group from the Red Valentino collection. These are the kinds of dresses Betty would probably love to see her daughter in (although the hemline length may cause some Betty objections) so there might be some resistance, but I think Sally would look fabulous in all of these for any fancy pants occasion she might have to attend with her family. Alas there are no white go go boots. Plus some very fun daytime suggestions for fall days in the city.

Red Valentino blue dress

And now for something Betty would probably not approve of with mismatched patterns and clashing styles mixing a hippy vibe with a little bit of rocker. Throw in some leather, a snarky attitude and staying out late to perfect the teen rebellious streak, which Sally Draper was already demonstrating when we last saw her including a cheeky backyard smoke. Kiernan Shipka could definitely work all of these looks.

NYFW Fantasy Costuming: Rachel Antonoff Fall 2015 for Girls

14 Feb

The first Fantasy Costuming of 2015 courtesy of New York Fashion Week and Rachel Antonoff’s Fall RTW 2015 collection is a mixture of subversive whimsy. Scrolling through the photos it became clear rather quickly that this selection is ideal for the characters on Girls. There is a preppy edge to some of the pieces; which is perfect for both Marnie and Shoshanna, plus Hannah has a tendency to lean this way.

Even as the characters on Girls continue to grow up they can fall back on old tendencies which is why the provocative edge of some these pieces is dream wear for Hannah. And she has definitely worn something that resembles pajamas while out and about cycling in Iowa. A family connection is also present as Rachel Antonoff’s brother Jack is dating Lena Dunham and Hannah has already worn Rachel Antonoff on the show including some very lovely shoes in season 2. As always the Fantasy Costuming selections are inspired by the costume design from the show in question – Jenn Rogien- and are in no way suggesting this character should wear a specific item mentioned.

Rachel Antonoff ovariesA sweater with the female reproductive system pretty much screams Hannah as it is comfy and a little daring. Of course Hannah and Lena are not the same person, but it is pretty safe to say they hold similar views on the reproductive rights of women.

Rachel AntonoffContinuing the tradition of Hannah wearing very cute dresses on occasions such as at Jessa’s wedding, her birthday, dinner with her parents and after she got her first big paycheck with this floral offering. For more Hannah picks check out the gallery at the bottom of the page.

Rachel Antonoff pleatsPleats and tartan for Shoshanna as a reaction to marathoning Outlander and trying to find her very own Jamie. Shoshanna is the one who changes her look the most dressing with a theme or occasion in mind.

Rachel Antonoff cropAnd this is more party wear for Shosh with a matching polka dot crop and skirt number.

Rachel Antonoff RTW 2015Marnie is trying to do the whole boho folk singer thing but we all know she is a preppy girl at heart.

Rachel Antonoff summer dressAnd here is something for Marnie and a return to the beach house for the sophisticated bonding trip she desired. Okay that probably won’t happen but she can still wear this is flirty girly frock.

Rachel Antonoff maxi dressBotany is one of Rachel Antonoff’s points of reference here and Jessa has been known to rock a hippy-esque maxi dress (okay maybe to hide Jemima Kirke’s pregnancy).

Check out the gallery below for more looks for Hannah from Rachel Antonoff’s Fall 2015 collection and stay tuned for more NYFW Fantasy Costuming.

The Most Angela Chase Dress at NYFW

11 Sep

The ’90s inspired fashion cycle continues and while the crop top explosion is something I’m enjoying just as much now as I did back then (and there continued to be a lot of stomach slivers on the Spring 2015 NYFW runway); the happiness I get from relating something back to My So-Called Life far outweighs my fear of showing my midriff. And you know Rayanne Graff could rock a bralette like no other, particularly when layered with multiple shirts and jackets.

Scrolling through endless shots and what leaps out? That’s right a dress from the Creatures of the Wind collection that is a combination of every Angela Chase plaid shirt/dress ever worn with a black plunging vest underneath.

Creatures Angela ChaseHere is some Angela in plaid examples just in case you don’t spot the connection:

MSCL the plaid dressThe ‘trying not to be obvious while looking at Jordan Catalano’ plaid.

MSCL A and R bedroomThe ‘squeezing a zit even though you know it’s a bad idea’ plaid.

MSCL 6 A, P, GThe ‘hanging with your parents and wearing over dungarees’ plaid.

MSCL ep13 Sharon and Angela bedThe ‘watching a sex manual VHS with your former BFF’ plaid.

MSCL ep 11 Angela JordanThe ‘talking to Jordan Catalano all cool and casual like’ plaid.

MSCL bathroom make upThe ‘what the hell is Rayanne wearing?’ plaid.

MSCL ep9 DangelaThe ‘my little sister doing a spot on impression of me’ plaid.

MSCL ep12 bathroomThe ‘off the shoulder what is my former BFF talking to my current BFF about?’ plaid.

where's angelaThe ‘can you spot me while I’m hiding out in a fort made of plaid’ plaid.

And finally…

Lake BellThe ‘Angela Chase tribute outfit as worn by Lake Bell in the excellent In a World…‘ plaid.

New York Fashion Week: Best of the Runway Watching Looks Part 2

10 Sep

New York Fashion Week continues to draw a plethora of famous faces to the front rows of runway shows and this gives us a whole lot of new looks to pour over. This is the second “Best of the Runway Watching” column and you can find the OITNB cast heavy first take here.

The Alice + Olivia show was a particularly big draw for TV/film starlets with a lot of them wearing items that have just hit Alicia + Olivia stores/online. We will be linking to those as you might want to add them to your wish list.

NYFW YvonneAt Naeem Khan the front row is all intricate pattern and bold designs much like the intricate beading and color on display on the runway. All decked out in Naeem Khan are Jamie Chung (she has been a heavy presence this week and she’s the only person to feature on both ‘Best of’ lists), Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Yvonne Strahovski, Connie Britton, and Padma Lakshmi. I am especially drawn to Strahovski’s stunning blue and yellow kaleidoscope-print frock and of course Connie Britton in general.

Kiernan Shipka in pantsIt’s a rare sight to see Kiernan Shipka at an event in pants, but here she is at Zac Posen in another sartorial delight. The structure of the top is unusual in its angles and yet it works with the patterned detail of her bottom half.

Kiernan ShipkaAt Tory Burch, Kiernan Shipka wore something more in line with her usual red carpet styling in a cute floral frock. Even though it’s entirely age appropriate I do have to remind myself that she is only 14 years old and then I feel all protective; Hollywood be good to her.

Anna ChlumskyIt might be due to the colors and pattern, but there is a little something Flamenco dancer about Anna Chlumsky’s outfit at Zac Posen. I’m swung by the texture of the red sweater (SO excited for sweater season) and Chlumsky’s striking red lip color. Plus she’ s pretty great so that helps me get passed the aspects of the outfit that are less pleasing.

Willow ShieldsThe rest of the “Best of” entries come from the Alice + Olivia event; up first is another teen delight with Willow Shields (Prim from The Hunger Games) striking a pose worthy of Wonder Woman in a very cute ballerina button down. The black and white patterned shoes peaking out are a cool touch.

Lynsey FonsecaThis might be my favorite from the Alice + Olivia clothes on display at this show and Lyndsy Fonseca deserves a dress this pretty after being subjected to the longest tale of how someone met their spouse (Fonseca is one of Ted’s kids on HIMYM). The bold green jacquard design also has the all important pocket detail.

Katie ChungAnother dress you could wear for day/night events and the only thing not quite working with Katie Chang’s outfit is her meh shoe color. The gold and black design of this gown and the cinched in waist make this another standout from Alice + Olivia.

Jamie ChungJamie Chung pairs an edgy leather cropped fitting tank  with the super girly lip covered skirt and scarlet ankle strap heals. It’s a fun, flirty outfit and I’m half expecting to see this skirt show up on either The Mindy Project or New Girl.

Holland RodenDoing classic black and white is Teen Wolf’s Holland Roden, adding flare with a pair of winking heels. Yep her shoes have faces on them and they are pretty awesome (and maybe 1% creepy).

Jennifer MorrisonA few weeks ago I went into a ridiculous amount of stores (10+) looking for a red belt like the one Jennifer Morrison is wearing and I did not find a single thin red belt. Luckily I got one for my birthday otherwise I would be giving this photo all the coveting side eye. I’m glad I don’t have to do this as it’s a really lovely outfit and another chance to see the red heels that I’m now after.

Jessica Lowndes A+OThis is one ornate gown complete with tassels, lace, beading and taffeta; while it might overwhelm the wearer, Jessica Lowndes looks resplendent.

Bold Color/Print for New Girl’s Jess from the Kate Spade New York NYFW Spring 2015 Collection

9 Sep

New Girl returns in a week (Tuesday, September 16) and TV screens will get a little brighter with Jessica Day’s colorful costuming. Primary colors, stripes, polka dots and prints are all part of the Jess wardrobe and the Spring 2015 RTW Kate Spade New York collection is bursting at the seams with the kind of style you can expect to see on New Girl.

It’s a fun NYFW offering that has a whole host of cute novelty bags from hearts to plant pots all of which practically scream Jess and it is a brand that this character has worn on multiple occasions in the past. Cinched in waists, shirt dresses and stripes are all on the menu. These designs are suitable for Jess’ new role as vice principal at school or lounging around the loft; a balance of work and leisure wear while not losing the signature Jess whimsy.

There’s also one slightly fancier dress for any potential dates that Jess will be going on now that she is single again and while it might be darker than the rest of the color palette the tulle and collar detail up the cute Jess factor. Add a red bowed belt like this Kate Spade one for extra pop.

New York Fashion Week: Best of the Runway Watching Looks Part 1

8 Sep

The new TV season is about to start and a good way to get word out about these shows is to have the stars attend New York Fashion week or as with the women from Orange is the New Black they are still enjoying their well deserved victory lap. Whatever the reason there are plenty of famous attendants showing off their own style (good or bad) while also taking in what they will be wearing in the future.

Rather than waiting until the end of the week with “Out of the Box” here are some of the best looks from the first half of NYFW.

SJPSarah Jessica Parker goes with NYFW like Carrie Bradshaw does with Manolo Blahniks and SJP wore this is beautiful Preen dress to the Lexus Design Disrupted event. The metallic pumps from her own SJP collection work like a charm against the bold color of this frock.

Allison Williams DVFAt the Diane von Furstenberg show Allison Williams was lucky enough to wear something from the Spring 2015 RTW collection; this white dress with a gingham detail is of the usual Allison Williams girly styling without being too on the nose a la her Emmys dress. Bonus lip color points.

Uzo Aduba Christian SirianoUzo Aduba continues her style streak moving away from 70s secretary bowed chic (which I love) to this shimmery art deco looking delight at the Christian Siriano show.

Jackie Cruz, Selenis Leyva, amanda WarrenAduba’s OITNB co-stars Selenis Leyva, Jackie Cruz, Kimiko Glenn along with The Leftovers’ Amanda Warren showed off a range of bold styles at Nicole Miller. Kimiko Glenn kept things simple chic in a grey pencil skirt and crop sweater, while Cruz and Leyva went for the bold patterned look and Warren had a chest of feathers.

Margarita LevievaAt the same event former Revenge star Margarita Levieva wore some really meh nude pumps, but made up for it in a vermillion color dress with cut out side panels.

Katie CassidyThe Nicole Miller show was the place to be and Katie Cassidy demonstrates how to do runway watching in a super casual comfy manner (ok those shoes probably hurt) while still looking chic.

AnnaSophia RobbHere’s a guide to wearing your jacket on your shoulders as told in two parts at the Rebecca Minkoff runway show. First up AnnaSophia Robb and I’m still not over the Carrie Diaries cancellation even if Austin Butler and his hair will be making their way to Arrow. I am beyond in love with this geometric multicolored pleated skirt.

Jamie ChungJamie Chung could be a Pink Lady with this jacket slung over her shoulders, but it’s her print dress and blue bag that I’m coveting while ignoring whatever clunky strappy shoes she is wearing.

New York Fashion Week: 10 Spring 2015 Looks for Mad Men’s Megan Draper

8 Sep

Welcome to the first Fantasy Costuming from this New York Fashion Week showcasing the ready-to-wear looks for Spring 2015. Rather than starting with one designer we are instead going to focus on a variety of collections that would look right at home on Mad Men’s Megan Draper. Of course none of these designs are vintage, instead we wanted to find items that represent Megan’s fashion forward style and how she is always dressed straight out of the pages of Vogue while never coming across as try hard or a fashion victim. The pieces we have chosen have some elements of how we saw her last season as she attempts to live out her acting dream in LA so Cali boho sneaks in as well as both micro hemlines and longer, floaty hippy inspired ones.

This is not meant to reflect where the story is heading as we have no idea how much Megan is going to feature in the final episodes, particularly when you factor in how we left things in a seemingly final state with Don.

DVFStarting short and even though Mad Men is set before the introduction of Diane von Furstenberg’s iconic wrap dress in 1974, Megan would have looked very at home with this style and in this leafy patterned micro version.

DVF MeganThis is also from Diane von Furstenberg’s Spring 2015 RTW collection and the long sleeves/short skirt element is on trend with how Megan dressed in 1969 last season. Megan would definitely be a DVF woman.

Victoria BeckhamSticking with patterns but moving into the floor length gown area with Victoria Beckham and this reminds me of the optical art print which were very popular in the 60s. It’s like a less hypnotic/vomit inducing version and Jessica Paré certainly is statuesque enough to pull this off.

Honor 70sSticking with the length and going a bit more boho with this Honor frock.

Honour plungeAnother gown from Honor and this goes a little deeper with the plunging neckline and adds some color flare with the rainbow dotty belt.

Tadashi Shoji NYFW FallMore relaxed elegance and this time from Tadashi Shoji. Perfect for those times when Megan isn’t awkwardly approaching producers to find out why she didn’t get the part.

BCBGThis is the longer, less in your face movie star sexy version of the baby doll mini dress Megan wore in the season 6 premiere. This is from BCBG Max Azria and she could totally make it work in just as funky fashion.

BCBG FallAnother billowy dress from BCBG Max Azria in a beautiful pattern clashing design that exudes sexiness thanks to a well placed high leg slit.

Escada jumpsuit

Megan is totally going to work the jumpsuit phase as it gets more popular in the 70s and this one from Escada is a simple yet effective version of this enduring trend.

Rebecca MinkoffOne aspect that ties most of these looks together is they are all pretty effortless and even when Megan is wearing something high fashion she pulls it off with ease. Her off duty style also reflects this and I’ve always been a fan of seeing Megan in pants; this Rebecca Minkoff ensemble is set off with the wide brimmed floppy hat and is ideal for the warmer LA climate.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

14 Feb

As promised it’s a New York Fashion Week special with a look at some of the famous faces who attended the runway shows this week and for all our other NYFW coverage head here.

Solange at MillyWe tend to only focus on faces from TV with this feature, however it would be remiss of me if I didn’t include Solange at the Milly by Michelle Smith runway show as this is hands down my favorite outfit from the front row this week. Combining bubblegum pink with two such bold colors could have been a step too far and yet Solange pulls it off and looks incredible. This coat is my everything and will help combat the current chilly New York climate.

Tina Fey spotted smiling while leaving the Lincoln Center during NYFW in New York CitySpeaking of weather preparedness here is Tina Fey leaving the Carolina Herrera show on Monday switching out strappy heels for Hunter wellies and they still look pretty fantastic with this outfit. I’m on the fence with the Tootsie like glasses, but everything else is fantastic.

Diane Kruger Hugo BossOut of the Box regular Diane Kruger’s outfit manages to be weather appropriate and super stylish as she heads to the Hugo Boss show. There’s no cute, but freezing strappy shoe BS here and it’s no surprise that I am very much in love with the sweater she is wearing.

Zosia Mamet Rebecca MinkoffThe coat over the shoulders thing is very fashion week and Girls’ Zosia Mamet also demonstrates this at Rebecca Minkoff in stunning orange. Coats and sweaters are my jam.

Taylor Schilling and Caitlin FitzgeraldLooking very different from their Masters of Sex and Orange is the New Black characters is Caitlin Fitzgerald and Taylor Schilling hangout together at the Thakoon show. I’m normally not all that into jumpsuits, but pairing it with these booties has got me on board the whole jumpsuit of it all and Fitzgerald is giving off an effortlessly chic vibe. I’m pro tights and I love the color combination of Schilling’s bold print dress with the rainbow infused sparkly coat. So much shimmer.

Rose ByrnePolka dots! Rose Byrne wearing a dress at Michael Kors that I would very much like in my closet and it’s a classic look. I’m going to ignore the clumpy heels as this is a perfect outfit without them.

AnnaSophia RobbMore polka dots! And this time it’s shoes with AnnaSophia Robb wearing the cutest heels with a Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress at the DVF show (of course). Robb is always a delight at both NYFW and on the red carpet; while we don’t know if she will return as 1980s Carrie Bradshaw, in the present day she is just as fashion forward.

Dresses for New Girl’s Jess from Oscar de la Renta’s NYFW Fall 2014 Collection

12 Feb

This is a sequel of sorts to the September New York Fashion Week Oscar de la Renta runway show which featured polka dot and floral gowns that we thought would be perfect for Jess from New Girl. Both of these two patterns are once again included in the fall 2014 Oscar de la Renta’s collection and we’ve got Jess vibes all over again.

Some of these choices are more overtly Jess and while she tends to prefer a ’50s silhouette, the bubble skirt would be a fun and not all that crazy departure for this character and cobalt blue is a fantastic color on her. Both the polka dot and dramatic pink skirted gowns are probably not going to fit in with the styling on New Girl unless they get invited to another fancy pants party, so this is the ultimate in fantasy costuming. I could see Zooey Deschanel wearing either on an awards show red carpet.

Theory’s NYFW Fall 2014 Collection and Homeland’s Carrie Mathison

11 Feb

Claire Danes covered the January issue of Glamour magazine and mentioned that “Carrie wears a lot of Theory. That is her brand. She’s a Theory girl. It’s a lot of navy. A lot of navy.” Upon seeing Theory’s NYFW fall 2014 RTW collection we noticed several outfits that are very much the Carrie Mathison CIA uniform and here they are for your perusal.

Ok maybe Carrie wouldn’t wear some of the skirts (especially ones that are as sheer as this), but hey maybe she’ll want to try something new. The color palette favors the muted tones that Carrie prefers including the aforementioned navy.
