Get the Look: Donna’s Stripes Tees and Plaid Shirts on Halt and Catch Fire

25 Aug

The amount of good TV which has aired in 2015 has become a hot topic item as we get to the point where there are too many shows to keep up with. Fall television is quick approaching so now is prime catch up time and this week I decided to go against my better viewing style judgement skipping Halt and Catch Fire’s first season and diving straight into the second. I did watch the pilot back when it aired, but if I recall correctly I didn’t like it enough to keep watching even though the Girls in Hoodies podcast – miss you guys – always made me want to check back in.

So now I have and if I was to start my own Mutiny community room it would be dedicated to all things Donna and Cameron with a costume focused annex. As Halt and Catch Fire is set in the mid-80s the ideal places to find era appropriate garments are from vintage and thrift stores shopping. With Donna her Mutiny work style gravitates towards classic staples such as striped t-shirts, high waisted jeans, plaid shirts and college hoodies. It is the kind of wardrobe which easily doubles for off duty leisure time and she has plenty of business suits for those all important meetings.

IMG_1907The headband is also a vital part of her look and this is practical touch while serving up a girly approachable appearance. And it also means I can see a whole lot of Leighton Meester in Kerry Bishé.stripe teeRed and white stripe tees are available (in long and short sleeve) in pretty much every store including super affordablemid point and splurge.

IMG_1906Where the internet did fail me was finding a rainbow stripe t-shirt like this one and early to mid-80s fashion really excels at splashing multi-color stripes on an array of kids and adult clothing. This might be a search better suited for vintage stores.

Donna’s other wardrobe staple is plaid shirts. It might be sticky and hot at the moment, but the ideal time for this is item is fast approaching and I am so looking forward to the change in season. As with stripe tops, plaid shirts can be found in all price points and in a vast array of colors with Uniqlo being one of my go to brands.

IMG_1914 IMG_1913Pair either stripes or plaid with a pair of high waisted jeans for that Donna Clark look. These ones are from Madewell:

Madewell jeansDonna has done full fancy pants dress up mode in season 2 and looked stunning to boot; however it is her Mutiny party outfit which I am more interested in and it keeps in line with Donna’s overall casual wear look combining stripes with a shirt dress.

IMG_1916I love shirt dresses because they are easy to dress up or down and because they work in stripes, checks, polka dots and pretty much every pattern. This Tory Burch polka dot delight has caught my eye (okay I have previously featured the shirt version) and you could definitely change up the belt to something more Donna-esque.

Tory Burch polka dotAs with The AmericansHalt and Catch Fire’s costume designer Kimberly Adams hasn’t going all in on lurid 80s stereotypes. Yes Joe is all about the Miami Vice sleeve pushed up stylings and so many white jackets, but Joe is very different kind of character to Donna. He is the kind of person who would jump on trends, whereas Donna’s everyday attire is going to be similar to the kinds of clothes she has worn for the last few years.

Hopefully AMC will renew Halt and Catch Fire for a third season for many reasons including seeing how the new Cali location will impact the costume design.

The Wish List: Gina’s Lightning Bolt Shirt and Plaid Jacket on Brooklyn Nine-Nine

22 Oct

Last year Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Gina became an instant TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite thanks to her collection of patterned sweaters, love for wolfies and penchant for interpretive dance. And of course the all-round Chelsea Peretti related goodness. The clothing coveting continues this season and this Wish List is dedicated to Gina’s attire in the recent “Halloween II” episode. No, Gina doesn’t wear a spooky costume and instead she works the whole pattern clashing thing with aplomb.

Gina B99Pairing a Collection B plaid baseball jacket with faux leather sleeves (also available in black and white plaid) with the contrasting lightning bolt shirt from Topshop (it also comes in coral) is one way to mix it up as we head into the chillier season, but it isn’t quite ready to dig out all the knitwear.

Lightning shirtHere are a couple of alternate jacket suggestions:

TartanFirst up more faux leather sleeves and a biker jacket rather than baseball style from Chicwash.

tartan and leatherReal leather-trim with multiple zips and tartan patterned Karl Lagerfeld biker jacket for another take on this trend.

Not forgetting the excellent sweater game Gina brings on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and “Halloween II” was no different:

Brooklyn 99 Gina sweaterPolka dots and sleeved florals – the sleeve/body contrast is a big thing this year – and if you like the look of this ‘Sloane’ sweater but want it in a non-clashing way, Equipment has a couple of other items which have caught our attention using these patterns separately.

The ‘Aubrey‘ polka dot silk dress looks beyond slouchy comfy and I love a 3/4 length sleeve:

The Most Angela Chase Dress at NYFW

11 Sep

The ’90s inspired fashion cycle continues and while the crop top explosion is something I’m enjoying just as much now as I did back then (and there continued to be a lot of stomach slivers on the Spring 2015 NYFW runway); the happiness I get from relating something back to My So-Called Life far outweighs my fear of showing my midriff. And you know Rayanne Graff could rock a bralette like no other, particularly when layered with multiple shirts and jackets.

Scrolling through endless shots and what leaps out? That’s right a dress from the Creatures of the Wind collection that is a combination of every Angela Chase plaid shirt/dress ever worn with a black plunging vest underneath.

Creatures Angela ChaseHere is some Angela in plaid examples just in case you don’t spot the connection:

MSCL the plaid dressThe ‘trying not to be obvious while looking at Jordan Catalano’ plaid.

The Wish List: Denim Jackets and Cords

14 Aug

Fashion is about reinvention and we have seen multiple times that everything old can be new again. Current trends for the new fall season have a heavy ’90s grunge influence and while the hunt has begun for the perfect plaid coat for when it gets cold (if only we had kept our entire wardrobes from high school) it’s the ’70s that is currently giving inspiration. This is a decade that embraced synthetics materials and some extreme power clashing and despite the many fashion disasters I find that I am drawn to this period. Maybe I have watched Almost Famous too many times.

Having watched The Conjuring last week – the bits I did see when I wasn’t hiding behind my scarf – I now find myself hankering for some ’70s stylings beyond the polyester. Plaid is something that links the decades of glam rock and grunge; the recent Marie Claire Zooey Deschanel cover married these two eras and it is something that features heavily this season. So throw on a plaid shirt and pair it with the two items that begin TV Ate My Wardrobe’s fall wish list.

Topshop Moto Vintage Borg Denim Jacket

Denim jacket topshop

While an actual vintage denim jacket from the ’70s would be preferable Topshop offers up this great alternative. Over at Mr Porter this week they have a feature on denim jackets including Clothes On Film’s Chris Laverty discussing the role of denim jackets as costuming. Laverty mentions how the denim jackets in the ’60s became a symbol of youth in movies such as Easy Rider. In The Conjuring it is Roger, the father of the family (played by Ron Livingston) who is sporting a jacket similar to the one above so the youth factor isn’t so implicit but as a family there is a relaxed vibe (until the bad things start to happen).

ModCloth Rocking Major Cords

ModCloth Tangerine Cords

I had a pair of black flared cords when I was at university that were my favorite thing, that was until it rained and they got soaked up to the knees. The flaring on those was pretty extreme and this pair from ModCloth has a more toned down approach. Except when it comes to the color, you can opt for the safe ocean (in the photo below) or if you want to truly embrace the ’70s aesthetic they are also available in the bold tangerine (above). Your inner Penny Lane will love the exposed center seams and high waist; oversized sunglasses are optional. Bare feet might not be the best approach so either sandals for the end of summer or the more autumnal Converse would work as footwear for this look.
