The Americans 2.02 “Cardinal” Review: “How are we Going to Live Like This?”

There is a strong ripple effect reverberating through this week’s episode of The Americans as a result of the still unexplained murder of Emmett, Leanne and their daughter Amelia and the tension has increased ten-fold as they try and figure out the why of it all. Part of this is because they could fill a book with how this family is ‘just like us’ right down to the number and gender of their children. It’s a huge wake up call for both Philip and Elizabeth, even more so than the events at the end of last season that has already seen Elizabeth return with a slightly less rigid belief system. It’s not just Philip and Elizabeth who are taking note of these murders as they are all over the news (with no mention of course of their real profession) and Martha’s getting a gun for protection because of it – an early front-runner for Chekhov’s gun if there ever was one.

We are going to be looking at this episode once again through the lens of costuming and how this heightened paranoia is impacting the framing of certain shots.

The Americans 2.02 cream topWe open with Elizabeth still in full surveillance mode with everything and everyone posing as a potential danger; even the woman picking up children could be more than she seems. It’s all too close to home now and Elizabeth’s overall concern has switched from her duty to her country to her role as a mother. This ensemble is in tune with Elizabeth’s at home clothes and it’s the parallels it draws with another character which is why it stands out.

The Americans 2.02 NinaLike Elizabeth, Nina is leading in a double life and there is a noticeable difference in their styling. Elizabeth is playing the all American mom, whereas Nina is still very much a Russian in her surroundings and clothes. This cream sweater is not revealing in any way and the bow adds a hint of femininity. Nina does exert her sexuality outside the Embassy with Stan, but inside she is very much about toeing the company line, complete with the right look. Last season she also had to resort to sexual favors in the Embassy for information, however she holds her ground with Blondie loving Oleg with steely and determined fashion. White tones reflect innocence and both Elizabeth and Nina know how to work this angle to their advantage. There is also a level of detachment that Elizabeth has lost in light of recent events and yet Nina is still in possession of this; for how long?

The Americans 2.02 brown trenchAny good spy has a trench coat and Elizabeth is no different, she is rocking the slightly shorter length and as with a lot of clothes in the early 80s the color brown is very popular. Bold patterns and neon doesn’t come in until later and we’ve got the ’70s to thank for all the beige tones.

The Americans plaid and spotsPhilip’s taking the Harrison from Scandal approach with plaid and polka dots and this emphasizes not the slick tailoring as it does in Scandal, but rather how unassuming Philip is at work. Philip’s a travel agent not a threat, right?

The Americans 2.02 PhilipWell that’s when Philip’s not donning this delightful wig and moustache combo as he goes for a workman look and as I’ve seen mentioned elsewhere, he looks like he could play 2012’s Rust Cohle’s brother with this getup. Philip definitely gets the skeezier looking disguises and this is reminiscent of his revenge outfit from the pilot. This is far removed from Philip in dad gear as evidenced by Fred not recognizing him from their moment at the theme park, though that was incredibly quick and there was probably very little eye contact.

the Americans 2.02 playboyTo get some 1980s context here is a Playboy that Philip found on his Fred house search and Fred must be a Bo Derk fan as this issue is almost two years old (the date on it is March, 1980). Other headlines of relevance to today is the debate to legalize marijuana and this is when it still probably sounded cool to call it grass.

The Americans 2.02 LifeMore 1980s references ahoy as Elizabeth plays Life with Henry and Paige, I used to love this game and I’m pretty sure the spinning wheel was the reason why. Henry is less interested and wants to watch TV because that is real life. Henry is oblivious to everything once again and earlier in the episodes he explains his theory as to why two tests in one day is a bad idea. Paige is still suspicious and what she witnessed last week hasn’t deterred her snooping.

The Americans 2.02 Elizabeth phoneElizabeth’s wearing more from the brown color spectrum and here comes another ’80s pop culture reference as she suggests a trip to the movies to watch Raiders of the Lost Ark. Despite having come out in the summer of 1981 (we’re now in January 1982), it’s not all that surprising that a movie this huge is still playing in theaters; it didn’t get a VHS release until 1983.

The Americans 2.02 baseball capThe movie decision is so Elizabeth can respond to a call and rather than leave the kids in the house alone, the movie works as a suitable ruse. This is a dark shot, but Elizabeth’s only disguise is pulling back her hair and sticking on a baseball cap. She is dealing with a friend of their cause and this woman is also high on a range of substances so it’s unlikely she will remember much of anything, but it still feels like a bold move when things are at this heightened state of danger.

The Americans 2.02 leather glovesThere are so many tight shots throughout this episode, none tighter than Philip as he talks to Elizabeth, followed by Martha. He’s meant to be going back to Martha’s but down to a combination of what is going on at home and the mark that has been left on his hand after he’s been electrocuted there’s only one place he wants to be. It’s worth noting that Philip puts on the leather gloves while he is on the phone to Martha, as if he is trying to cover the mark even when she can’t see it.

The Americans 2.02 mirrorThis is another interesting use of framing as the closing shot of the episode features Elizabeth and Philip off to one side, shown in the reflection of the mirror. This discussion has Philip once again lamenting his decision to use Henry last week and Elizabeth tells him he didn’t have a choice. Philip’s response is that he did and it’s another occasion where the camera pushes in hard on their close up and it’s like everything is closing in around them.

It’s an incredibly intimate and telling conversation as Elizabeth brings up Jared, Emmett and Leanne’s surviving son and Philip reveals he saw him and heard his screams upon discovering his murdered family. “Taken care of” is a phrase that is lacking any real empathy, it sounds cold and like a transaction. There’s no real answer to this mess and Elizabeth has only just realized the impact that this could have on their children. She asks “How are we going to live like this?” Philip thinks they will get used to it and this is where the question of choice comes up. Elizabeth and Philip decided to become what they are, but Paige and Henry are a product of this and they have no agency of their own. We end on this shot and this line of thought knowing it’s going to have implications for the rest of the season.

Gillian Jacobs talks Community and Julliard on the Speakeasy with Paul F. Tompkins

Paul F. Tompkins Speakeasy series where the drinks are flowing as much as the conversation is a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite, as is this week’s guest Gillian Jacobs. The Community star talks about why she got into acting (it’s kinda heartbreaking, but she seems over it), the rigorous training at Julliard and why she was on probation there and her foray into independent film making. She also discusses the pop culture references on Community and which ones she didn’t get when they first shot a now iconic episode. They also cover the return of Dan Harmon and Jacobs reveals what she wouldn’t do again. It’s a really fun conversation and there’s a good rapport between Jacobs and Tompkins.

New Girl 3.18 “Sister III” Review: Roommates or Living Together?

The Abby Day trilogy has come to a close and she caused the kind of chaos that both Jess and Cece predicted. It wasn’t quite a cyclone of disaster, nor did Jess really ‘fix’ her and in the end she acted as a way to get Schmidt to move back into the loft, as well as ruffling some feathers and bringing characters back together.

NG_318-29_0007At the end of the first “Sister” episode Abby declared that she didn’t want to go home because she didn’t want to be a woman in her thirties living with her mother, she felt like a failure and a baby. By the end of “Sister III” Abby has made the decision after a discussion with Jess to do just this and earn some money for independent living. You see, the Day sisters are very different (ok yes everyone saw that) and while Jess likes her space, Abby is afraid of being alone and has bounced from guy to guy. She’s also pretty sure she’s never paid rent. So while Jess thinks this is exotic and fun, Abby is clearly tired of this lifestyle even if from the outside it looks like she is having a blast.

As with the conversation about their mom in “Sister” this is an Abby/Jess high point as Linda Cardellini and Zooey Deschanel have really great chemistry; the most disappointing thing about this arc is how few of these moments there have been. There’s a familiarity here so when Abby brings up the jazz ensemble story, it feels like a thing that actually happened and it’s believable that Jess would still be annoyed all these years later – “What’s that mean? “Too enthusiastic?”” There’s also the discussion about Nick’s “hippie cult leader feet” which mirrors the little blue denim backpack discussion from “Sister” and yes Nick you really, really need to wash them.

Jess has always been the sensible one (she is both the grown up and the baby) and she could fit all her lovers (I can’t read that word without thinking of the Carrie Bradshaw pronunciation) in one SUV, yes someone would have to sit on someone else’s lap but they would fit. Jess is also the kind of person who rings up inquiring about adult movies and ends up crying to an Ethel Kennedy documentary. This is all about sibling comparisons and I think no matter how comfortable you are in your own skin, this kind of comparisons will always occur and there’s always the feeling they are better and have less flaws than us. Jess sees Abby as being free and leading this exciting life. With her new relationship with Schmidt, Jess thinks Abby is challenging her to a ‘who is a better couple’ contest (which she isn’t) and this leads to all the dramaz. Jess feels like a failure as the whole sharing a room with Nick thing leads to her spending a night in a hotel and really as with any sibling rivalry (manufactured or real) there are no real winners or losers.

The Jess/Nick moving in together on the surface seems rather silly as they’ve lived together for over two years now, however there is a distinction between roommates and sharing a room like this. Their romantic journey has been bumpy and taken many baby steps; going from roommates to something more is a minefield of “what next?” Each step has been laced with uncertainty from the initial kiss, to the decision to go for it, followed by the boyfriend/girlfriend definitions to the most recent “I love you” declaration and so it’s not surprising this is also fraught with things left unsaid. Pretty much every time there is a status update at least one of them freaks out. Where Nick is a terrible liar (ditto Winston), Jess is excellent and comes prepared – yes she smokes in Sacramento.  As with a crime procedural ending an episode with finding out who the killer is, any Nick and Jess relationship quandary installments end with a smooch and them revealing how they actually feel.

There’s a twist to this in “Sister III” as Schmidt interrupts revealing he is moving back in and is taking Jess’ room, giving them no option but to embrace their new living situation. Apartment 4D is about to get very crowded and there is no real resolution to this Nick and Jess problem other than they’ve got to try it. As they point out, Jess’ room is bigger (and has a much better closet); they really dropped the ball on which room to live in. Also please Nick, ditch the Victorian match girl long shirt and this joke had me laughing so hard because it would appear that Liz Meriwether has incepted my friend’s life once again. Nick, the Henley can stay. Oh and there is definitely a difference between getting changed and getting naked in front of someone, though by this point in their relationship Nick should be fine with the former as well as the latter.

So Schmidt’s back and the Abby story ended up being a bit of a plot contrivance to shift the pieces back into place. Of course this relationship always had a short shelf life and it is a way to reinforce the good Schmidt, as opposed to whatever the hell they were doing with him earlier this season. The conversation with Cece after the whole spying/car getting stolen thing is further emphasizing this about Schmidt. Cece has known Abby for a long time so she is naturally suspicious of her motives and despite what transpired between Cece and Schmidt, she clearly still cares about him. I’m just not ready for round three of this romantic merry-go-round so I hope they hold off from going down this path for now.

The Cece/Coach relationship is firmly friends, so much so that Coach is putting on an act as if he is one of her girlfriends and as Cece points out she never asked him to do this. This is more about how Coach is with women, as before Jess and Cece he doesn’t appear to have had any meaningful non-romantic relationships with the opposite sex so he puts on this kind of performance because he doesn’t know how to act. Coach is growing as a character and he’s developing relationships with the entire core cast and this is definitely a good thing; sorry Schmidt I really like Cece/Coach friends dynamic.

Off on his own this week (again) is Winston as he trains for the LAPD fitness exam and it produces the episodes funniest moments (as well as the return of Ferguson) as he shows off his crab and fears the rings thanks to Nick pantsing him when they were kids. This leads to Winston going off on a kid, making this even funnier as Winston digs himself a giant hole. Another scene at the beach with the group must have been cut as half the promo photos for this episode show this happening (and Nick pantsing him all over again).

Next week we will be returning to the regular set up and now there are five people living in the loft (don’t tell the landlord), this should definitely lead to shenanigans. While the Abby storylines didn’t always land and these three episodes have felt overstuffed at times, this last part is definitely the most successful and seeing Linda Cardellini in a comedic role again has been a delight.

“Let it Go” Performed with Classroom Instruments on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

If it isn’t already stuck in your head for eternity then give this version of “Let it Go” a whirl, as Frozen star Idina Menzel (insert John Travolta pronunciation joke here) appeared on The Tonight Show to perform the Oscar winning track in a segment that first appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. I think I like this better than the Oscar performance.

Best of the 2014 Oscar Red Carpet

So after nearly 7 hours of red carpet and the actual award show combined (yikes, that is a VERY long time and no wonder my snacks ran out) we have chosen our favorite red carpet looks. While the Film Independent Spirit Awards were awash with color and pattern, the Oscars were more on the muted side with dark gowns and a whole lot of nude metallics on display. Here are our highlights of the red carpet and a couple of bonus shots from the show.

Lupita Nyong'o red carpetStarting with Lupita Nyong’o as she has been the star of this award season and this gorgeous pale blue Prada gown is the perfect dress for the Oscar winner. Nyong’o’s speech was touching and from what I could tell everyone on my Twitter feed had a very blurry screen during this moment. The one divisive aspect was the headband and for the record I am pro this accessory.

Lupita Nyong'o OscarsHere’s an extra shot as it looks stunning in movement and Nyong’o helped design this gown; I would totally want something I could swish like this if given the opportunity.

Kate HudsonNow this is how you do old Hollywood glamour and Kate Hudson’s Atelier Versace gown is oozing with style. The semi-cape is giving me so much life (and it’s a shame she ditched it when she presented) as are the slightly boxy shoulders. The combination of the delicate beading and deep plunge give it that extra oomph; I can totally understand why Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell were beaming when she stepped out on stage.

Amy AdamsI saw some refer to this as boring, but I really like that Amy Adams chosen something as simple and sophisticated as this navy Gucci Première frock. It’s tuxedo inspired and the lapels are such a great detail; it’s the opposite of the plunging American Hustle type gowns we saw earlier in this awards cycle and it’s wonderful.

Karen OO, Karen O you look incredible in black Camilla Stærk. Another plunging neckline and the broach really set it off, plus this is also a little capey so you know I love it. The gold and black geometric clutch adds the right amount of glitz to this ensemble.

Karen O performanceBonus Karen O! Performing “The Moon Song” with Ezra Koenig with heels placed to the side, they made this song feel really intimate in a venue that large. The red gown is flowy and spectacular and I love that Koenig’s socks match Karen O’s dress. Excuse me while I go listen to this song on repeat.

Olivia Wilde and Jason SudekisBold statement ahoy – sorry Brad and Angelina (because I’m sure they will be reading), but here is my best dressed couple of the evening. Wilde is wearing a black Valentino column dress with a mock turtleneck and the white open back gives it that something extra. It’s all about monochrome with her accessories and she looks incredible. By accessories I mean her clutch and jewelry, not her baby bump as E! decided this was part of the accessory discussion. Jason Sudeikis is snazzy in Prada and I’m totally digging the beard.

Emma WatsonEmma Watson is shimmering in metallic Vera Wang, going for a pewter hue, rather than all the many nude sparkly affairs that were on trend last night (but none that I really liked). The slight mermaid kick of the skirt and the lighter top turn what could have been a nothing dress into something special. As does the dramatic dark lipstick which I’m coveting quite hard.

Oscar Red Carpet Rewind – Michelle Williams

This amazing infograph of the dresses worn by best actress winners since 1929 is a thing of wonder – it sadly doesn’t include my all time favorite Oscars dress which is this mustard Vera Wang gown worn by Michelle Williams at the 2006 awards. It’s vintage-inspired with pleated and tucked details; eight years later and it’s still stunning. Williams was nominated in the supporting category for Brokeback Mountain and even though she didn’t take home the prize (Rachel Weisz won for The Constant Gardner) this winning look is topped off with a slightly mussed updo and bold red lips.

Best of the Film Independent Spirit Awards Red Carpet 2014

The Spirit Awards is held by the beach in a white tent so the atmosphere is way more laid back than the big awards show of today. The red carpet reflects this as the people who have been working the awards circuit for the past couple of months can ditch traditional fancy pants frocks and can try something a little different. It’s one of my favorite red carpets for this reason and this year did not disappoint with bold color and pattern being the big trend.

Michael B JordanStarting with the guys and Michael B. Jordan shakes things up pairing a cream Dolce & Gabbana with a fun printed button-down shirt and no tie. This is the perfect attire for this afternoon event by the ocean and Jordan shows once again what a snappy dresser he is.

Melonie DiazJordan’s co-star from Fruitvale Station Melonie Diaz is wearing a Preen dress with an amazing zigzag geometric print that I am mesmerized by; it reminds me of an abstract art print. The bracelet is a nice touch that doesn’t seem too overwhelmed by the dress and the dash of pink lipstick also adds to this look.

Greta GerwigI’m pretty much head over heels for this orange Narciso Rodriguez shift dress so I’m going to ignore how much I dislike the nude shoes Greta Gerwig is sporting. I get wearing something that doesn’t detract from the frock, but not these shoes. Anyway, I love the dress and Gerwig looks amazing. As Cate Blanchett pointed out I also don’t understand how Gerwig wasn’t nominated for her performance in Frances Ha.

Kathryn HahnOh Kathryn Hahn, you bring me so much joy whenever you pop up on Parks and Recreation, your turn on Girls is part of Jessa’s best storyline and this Bibhu Mohapatra lime and navy brocade dress is stunning. The blue belt brings it all together and the side sweep hair is working like a charm. As is the bold pink lip color which I am always partial to.

Lupita NyongoThe most anticipated red carpet arrival tonight is going to be Lupita Nyong’o as she has been the undisputed style queen of awards season and this is another winning look. While I’m not normally a huge fan of playsuits, Lupita is doing wonders for this Stella McCartney metallic one, so I can put my usual animosity for this outfit type to one side.

Aubrey PlazaAnother fabulous Preen gown and while it doesn’t have the same wow factor as Diaz’s geometric affair, Aubrey Plaza looks wonderful in this ’50s style silhouette and the dash of orange piping and belting really sets this off. The orange zebra-print pumps are a far cry from most of the heels on this red carpet and they’re wonderful.

Cate BlanchettMore bold color and pattern from another one of the most anticipated red carpet arrivals tonight and that is Cate Blanchett as she tends to wear gowns that could double for a work of art. This is no different and this Roksanda Ilincic dress is another hit for her. The gold belting is bang on trend and the color blocking of this dress combined with the blue flower gives it an elegant, but playful twist.

Scandal 3.11 “Ride Sally, Ride” Costume Review: Photo Ops and Fake Smiles

Scandal is back and so are the twisty, back stabby storylines and fabulous clothes. Previously with these Scandal reviews I have talked through the episode via the costuming and that is going to remain the case. There will be one slight change as a handful of costumes will take the spotlight and then there will be a separate gallery at the end to highlight other outfits that catch our eye. As with everything on TV Ate My Wardrobe we want to keep these articles as fresh and relevant as possible; so while I don’t necessarily need to write a paragraph about Harrison’s amazing suits each week, we still want to show off the amazing tailoring. Feedback is always appreciated so if there is anything you want to see from these Scandal costume reviews then let us know in the comments.

Scandal 3.11 cheersThe first of two staged photo ops in “Ride Sally, Ride” and this one comes with so many fake smiles and gritted teeth. Both Mellie and Olivia are wearing their power colors with Olivia in white Prada and Mellie opting for a red (you can see the color version in the gallery below). The black and white stills, a Scandal signature are even more pertinent in scenes like this one where the paparazzi are present. The goblet wine glasses are not quite the Olivia Pope ultra thin stemmed standard but they will do.

Scandal 3.11 wine cardigan no tieAs seen later, Olivia is on a wine chugging mission in the appropriate wine cardigan attire as she questions exactly why she is doing all of this and what it means to be a patriot. Jake is unwavering in his devotion to his Commander-in-Chief and this is why he has taken the job as Command. Jake claims that it will be different now that he is in charge; for starters he is taking a much more relaxed approach to the suit wearing and the lack of tie reflects his more casual Command. Once again Scott Foley is looking pretty damn good in a suit – I’ve been watching a lot of Felicity recently so it took a moment to acclimatize to the older less plaid shirt wearing Foley – and he steps up to the patriot plate in a way I’m sure he doesn’t mind.

Scandal 3.11 photo opTo the second staged photo moment and the bachelor Olivia has chosen as a cover is not from Mellie’s list. She won’t give Mellie the satisfaction. Matching coffee cups with well put together casual, yet stylish (of course) park walking attire and they look like a dream couple. Of course it’s WAY more complicated than that and there are real feelings at stake here, definitely for Jake and while it’s not the same for Olivia because of Fitz, there’s an attraction. Jake doesn’t throw whiskey glasses across the room, nor does he have door open/door closed tantrums, so you know he’s pretty good dating material. Even if it’s all for show.

Scandal 3.11 threesomeAaaaand things just got even more complicated with the new VP nominee choice Andrew Nichols as he spoke of a woman he was once in love with and lost. Of course that woman turns out to be Mellie and this love triangle just grew another side. It will be good to see Mellie lavished with attention and once again she looks stunning in red. Mellie’s wearing all the colors this week with green, royal blue and teal making an appearance. It’s all about the bold colors to emphasize a message of power; Mellie is no wallflower despite the endless Fitz rumors.

Scandal 3.11 AdnanAnother lady in red and it’s the mysterious Adnan Salif, the very person who Harrison has been terrified of and why he has been a wreck since finding out that she is back in the country. Harrison is also pretty attracted to her and instead of this ending in a bloody mess it ends up in a tryst on the desk. Oh and kudos show for the surprise that Adnan is a woman and shame on me for just assuming it was going to be a dude.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

It’s a big week for TV costuming with the return of three TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites The AmericansScandal and Hannibal. All three of these shows deserve posts of their own and so we’re going to focus on the red carpet with this edition of Out of the Box. There’s been more award shows in the lead up to Sunday’s Oscars including the Costume Designers Guild Awards, we’ve got other premieres, public appearances and the first night of Late Night with Seth Meyers.

16th Costume Designers Guild Awards With Presenting Sponsor Lacoste - ArrivalsTurquoise was on trend at the Costume Designers Guild Awards with Mindy Kaling and Amy Adams wearing variations of this color and Olivia Munn is just as stunning in J. Mendel. It’s a beautiful gown and I really hope we get to see the bolder end of the color spectrum on the red carpet come Sunday.

Kiernan ShipkaMad Men darling Kiernan Shipka also attended the Costume Designers Guild Awards and she’s gone for a very different approach from the turquoise set. This Delpozo ensemble takes florals and checks in two pieces that shouldn’t work but thanks to Shipka’s age and previous sartorial hits, she pulls it off. Stick this on a twenty something and it might come across as too try hard, putting it on a teen and it’s marvelous. Don’t ever change.

"The Americans" Season 2 Premiere - ArrivalsI have a weakness for a lady tux – see Angelina Jolie at the BAFTAs – and like Jolie, Keri Russell is wearing a Saint Laurent suit and she has paired it with a super chic sleeveless Balenciaga blouse for The Americans premiere. It’s a really simple and yet elegant look and Russell has the side sweep locked down.

The Americans 2.01 “Comrades” Review: Happy Families

The return of The Americans has been high on the TV Ate My Wardrobe 2014 anticipation list and we’re going to review it in a similar fashion Masters of Sex and Scandal (back tonight!). This means there will be a strong focus on the costuming aspects and with a show like The Americans there is a huge variety of looks thanks to the many disguises. As with Masters of Sex it’s a period show, so there will be less emphasis on how you can recreate the looks (as with Scandal) and more discussion on thematic issues. Or general wig appreciation. The Americans has a strong focus on notions of identity and while the espionage aspect helps create tension, it’s the central relationship and how they navigate their duplicitous lifestyle that makes it more than just a spy show.

The Americans 2.01Starting with the reunited Jennings family and this is the role they have been playing for the longest. The focus of this year is going to be on family as Elizabeth and Philip are a much stronger unit, but now there comes a threat from within as Paige is starting to question where her parents go and what they are really doing in the laundry room. It’s all very wholesome as they celebrate Henry’s birthday and all the different necked sweaters (turtle, roll, cowl) make an appearance in “Comrades,” because hey the Jennings’ are just like us (well if we were also in 1982). In an episode of Felicity I just watched Felicity is referred to as the “Queen of Sweaters” and it looks like Keri Russell will be challenging for this title on The Americans. Paige seems pretty happy to see her parents being affectionate with each other and indulging in date night, well until she doesn’t knock on the door and walks in on a very intimate act. Will this convince her that she shouldn’t be snooping anymore? Like Elizabeth I’m surprised that she even came down for breakfast after witnessing that. Talk about permanent scars.

the Americans 2.01 turtle neckMore turtlenecks and the super awkward breakfast that rivals anything that Breaking Bad did over eggs, Henry’s taking the Walt Jr. position of being blissfully unaware of any subtext. I’m kinda hoping we get to see his birthday present (a telescope) coming into play later in the season as a useful spy tool. The computer game he was really after doesn’t hold as much use for his parents.

The Americans 2.01 paisleyPhilip’s work wear and leisure clothes are pretty interchangeable, whereas Elizabeth definitely has more of a strict division between office and home. Here she is showing that ’70s fashion is still creeping in with a paisley blouse and the vest is added after breakfast, turning the outfit from mom wear to work attire.

the Americans elizabeth and henryThe threat also hits close to home when they have to complete a mission while out with their family, something Philip says is off limits. But hey it’s a simple pass and everything will be fine, except it isn’t and their co-workers (are other spies co-workers?) end up dead and there’s panic that Henry and Paige are in danger. Henry and Paige are blissfully unaware and once again I want Henry’s jacket – though it will never beat his color block one from last season.

8BIM:Oh Philip, you look like a regular dad having a day out with your family and yet you still end up in a hotel room full of dead bodies (not at your hands). This is what happens when you let other people know your weekend plans. Let’s hope the couple in the hallway didn’t get a good look at him and this lovely cowl neck sweater.

The Americans 2.01 handsI don’t know if there is a term for shipping a couple who are in a fake marriage, sleep with other people for work and have kids together, but if there is then this is what I am doing with Philip and Elizabeth. The hand grab after Philip reveals what a shitty mission he had the night before is possibly even more intimate than what comes after, no really. Sex is one thing, but it’s the other level of closeness that Elizabeth has previously had difficulty with. Not so anymore and the near death experience has made them stronger together, but will it end up impacting their work performance if the marriage is no longer pretend?

The Americans 2.01Now to the disguises and the fucked up mission Philip mentions is this one featuring a Texas accent, a blonde wig and a cowboy hat. It’s all goes to hell when Philip’s wig gets ripped off and it’s like seeing behind the curtain. There’s a reason why these wigs need to stay on as when they don’t, innocent people end up dead.

Here’s what it looks like under the wig. That’s a lot of glue and clips. By exposing Philip in this way the tan leather jacket and cowboy hat props end up looking ridiculous and out of place. In the original shot of the full disguise it makes sense and he looks pretty badass (yes the knife adds to that), but in the cold light in the kitchen the jacket suddenly looks too large.

The Americans 2.01 post disasterBack in the car and he briefly puts the cowboy hat on, but it’s too late and this disguise is done. Matthew Rhys shows just how devastating this is for Philip; he’s not just a cold blooded killer for hire with no emotions.

The Americans 2.01 airport securityThis assignment is more successful and it involves a tag team effort – the woman work the sex angle and the guys get to play airport security. There’s a moment where we see a close up of Elizabeth’s scar and later she talks to Leanne about being away from her family; it’s good to see Elizabeth opening up like this to someone who knows exactly what she is referring to. Unfortunately you shouldn’t get too attached in the spy business and Leanne ends up dead (along with her husband Emmett and her daughter). They are a mirror to Philip and Elizabeth, so their death coupled with the lack of clear explanation adds to the already ominous tone.

The Americans 2.01 clarkWhich brings us to yet another bespectacled Philip disguise and it’s the return of Clark. The argyle vest is very much part of his no danger look and while he’s airing his concerns to Martha she reassures him that “You’re home now.” He is anything but, as we cut to Elizabeth alone and despite their reunion everything is still just as precarious.

An excellent first episode back and it already feels like the stakes are higher this year. The shift from marriage to family doesn’t come across as forced and considering whom her parents are it feels natural that Paige is curious of what they are up to. While I haven’t touched on the Stan/Nina relationship, I am excited for where this is headed and how Stan was so incredulous about Nina’s reaction to Meryl Streep.
