Best of the 2015 SAG Awards – Color and Print

26 Jan

The SAG Awards is a slightly more relaxed affair; it is still fancy frock aplenty but you can tell that some are holding back for the Oscars. Well not everyone as the TV nominees are done until the Emmys and not every SAG nominee is going to the Oscars. There was plenty of color on the red carpet continuing the Golden Globes trend and here is Part 1 of TV Ate My Wardrobes favorite SAG looks.

Lupita SAGWhen Lupita Nyong’o arrived in this stunning Elie Saab gown she pretty much shut the whole thing down and this is by far the crowning moment of the red carpet. The color, the stripes, makeup and hair are all incredible; Lupita remains the style queen even when she isn’t nominated. I cannot wait for the Star Wars press tour at the end of this year.

Julianne MooreRed hair and emerald is always a winning combination and Julianne Moore has gone for another Givenchy Couture beauty with this beaded delight.

Kiera KnightleyDeep purple really suits Keira Knightley as does this somewhat boho Erdem dress.

Julianna MarguliesOpinion was split regarding Julianna Margulies’ cobalt-blue Giambattista Valli super draped skirt and I am very much on the love it side. It didn’t photograph well from certain angles, but I adore the color and how dramatic it looks.

Jennifer Aniston and Justin TherouxJennifer Aniston has relaxed a lot since she didn’t get an Oscar nomination – the hair is down, the cleave is on show – and this vintage John Galliano goes full plunge while avoiding her usual black gown favoring. Justin scrubs up rather well too.

Claire DanesHere’s another dress that had a mixed reception and it might be my well documented Claire Danes blindness as I think she is totally working this khaki green Marc Jacobs dress; barnacle side beading and all.

Rashida JonesThe blue piping/belting combined with the bold print make this a style win for Rashida Jones in Emanuel Ungaro.

Lorraine ToussaintPockets! And an amazing printed skirt from Lorraine Toussaint.

Maisie Williams and Sophie TurnerSpeaking of pockets; Maisie Williams is a lady after my own heart as she tweeted “DRESS POCKETS ARE IMPORTANT & DONT LET ANYONE TELL YOU OTHERWISE” (all caps are her own but I support the emphasis). This super cute red dress does have pockets and Williams’ on screen sibling Sophie Turner has a fantastic pair of heart heels to go with her chic black gown.

Danielle BrooksThis is beautiful from Danielle Brooks in a navy custom Christian Siriano working old Hollywood glamour with aplomb.

Melissa FumeroOff the shoulder blue frocks were on trend and here is another excellent take with Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Melissa Fumero in Maxime Simoens.

Lauren LapkusRounding off the blues with Orange is the New Black’s Lauren Lapkus. Also passing the now patented Maisie Williams pocket test.

OITNBAnd speaking of Orange is the New Black – how great is this shot of the cast on stage taking home Ensemble in a Comedy Series?!

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

23 Jan

The onslaught of award shows has slowed down and with TCA coming to a close this is a slightly quieter week. Fear not as there are still some awards to be given out before the SAGs/Oscars – the SAG Awards are this Sunday – and various promotional events too. Plus the return of a character look of the week.

Keri Russell and Matthew RhysStarting with one final TCA panel and I am thrilled The Americans is back for season 3 next week (January 28). I am also happy to see Keri Russell ditching her signature black/white choices and embracing some color and pattern in an olive-green Balenciaga leather skirt with a Saint Laurent leopard print shirt. This pairing particularly with the bow element sounds like it shouldn’t work, but it looks fantastic and Russell continues her style reign. Polka dot points for Matthew Rhys thanks to his tie which brightens up the grey.

Joanne FroggattThe British Consulate in LA hosted an afternoon tea to celebrate Wolf Hall this week – what better way to celebrate something concerning British royalty than with a very British sounding event – and Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt is doing the flirty summer dress thing in Issa. I hope the ground isn’t too soft as I’m picturing those gold Giuseppe Zanotti sandals sinking into the grass.

Emma WillisAt the National Television Awards presenter Emma Willis embraced her fondness for yellow Roksanda Ilincic in another incredible outfit. Pairing a crop top with a skirt this floaty adds an edginess to this look and ensures Willis stands out in the style stakes.

Maisie Williams NTAMaisie Williams embraces the menswear trend at the National Television Awards in a fantastic Diesel Gold suit and this is a fun play on the lady tux. The jacket chain and white top with black neckband are the kind of things it helps to be 17 to wear and Maisie Williams continues to have fun with her outfit choices at events like this. Bonus red lipstick points are awarded of course.

Sleepy HollowAs I mentioned in the intro this is the return of a character look of the week with Ichabod Crane on Sleepy Hollow going for a slightly dressier approach as it is date night, which turns into painting horrorshow. At least he didn’t get too much blood on his high stand collar; hopefully it will come out in the wash. Plus he also got to air his grievance about modern dress “How can one be both business and casual?” Abbie’s sticking to her standard all dark attire and I’m forever thrilled she gets to wear boots like these ones rather than running in heels.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

22 Jan

Happy Thursday! And yes it is time for another Behind the Insta-Scenes roundup and this week we’ve got an array of photos from sets such as Parks and Recreation (enjoy it while you can as this is the final season), The Good WifeThe Mindy Project (with a bonus special gift from Mindy) and Jane the Virgin.

Father/daughter time on The Good Wife and Sarah Steele is always a welcome sight as Marissa Gold; can she be my body woman please? I wouldn’t mind a glass of milk or a helpful snark filled bit of advice.

http://instagram.com/p/yAP1hmChfw/?modal=true

What better way to congratulate someone on an Oscar nomination than with a special wreath and the Wreath Witherspoon gag from The Mindy Project’s festive episode is still making me laugh a month later. Glad to see Reese Witherspoon is into this new holiday tradition.

http://instagram.com/p/yFhNZQOqVY/?modal=true

Jenny Slate loves a t-neck (is Felicity her style icon?) and Kroll Show is giving her an outlet to wear this garment.

Going full Claire Danes as Juliet on the set of Jane the Virgin – wings like this will always conjure up Romeo + Juliet feelings – with Gina Rodriguez teasing a potential Chapter Seventeen costume look.

The all-denim Jean-Ralphio and Mona Lisa styling is still one of my favorite Parks and Recreation costume moments and hopefully we will get to see more outrageous outfits from the pair in this final season.

More from Parks and Rec’s final season (*sob*) with Retta treating us to a closer look at April’s flashback look from her very specific leaving party theme.

Another excellent Mindy Project guest star and Vanessa Williams is getting in on the amazing coat and patterned dress action.

The Wish List: Jane’s Summer Dress on Jane the Virgin

21 Jan

It is far from summer dress weather and the grey sky that is my current view is rather uninviting; however I finally caught up on Jane the Virgin which has charming and a generally sunny disposition while set in an almost always warm climate (with the occasional hurricane). The costuming is a whole lot of flirty frocks, shorts, tanks and vest tops all ideal for Long Beach. Jane’s attire tends to be on the more relaxed side although her teaching placement requires a less casual approach to her dress choices. Sometimes this goes array as was the case when she fell asleep in her clubbing outfit (which became almost school appropriate with the addition of a cardigan).

Chapter SixThe dress I want to talk about (and add to my own collection) appears in Chapter Six and falls into Jane’s work wear category. It’s floral and cute, plus it has pockets which is what I want from a dress. And guess what? It is also super affordable! H&M is where you can find this dress and it makes me so happy to see Jane wear clothes that make sense for her budget. And even though this is a summer wear for Jane, a pair of tights, cute ankle boots and a cardigan could easily turn it into a winter floral frock. The pink belt is a good extra touch and there are plenty of color belts that would work.

H&MBy doing these wish lists I often marvel at the cost of some character’s clothing collections and it doesn’t always make the most amount of sense considering their job or lifestyle – even Olivia Pope with her two $2000 cardigans seems like a stretch. In Chapter Six Jane’s favorite store Target even gets in on the multifloral dress action. This isn’t to say that Jane doesn’t wear more splurge heavy clothes as in the same episode she’s wearing a Joie romper that was originally priced at just over $300, but hey it is a start.

While thinking about the cost of my closet I know I have a couple of more expensive pieces (coats, dresses and shoes mostly) with the majority coming from stores at price points like H&M or Uniqlo and it is encouraging to see costume designers utilizing brands like these when a character doesn’t have an endless stream of disposable income.

Abbi and Ilana’s Delightful Outfits on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

20 Jan

Talk show outfits can be many things; some go for full on fancy frock whereas others take the more relaxed route (see Sienna Miller’s amazing Celine sweater dress from Fallon last week). Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer have gone full on SHOW outfits with the tuxedo works and a very interesting color scheme (a nod to the original Dumb & Dumber). They do talk about their chosen attire so I won’t ruin it and it sounds like their original outfits are “Fattest Asses” levels of amazing.

In the second clip they discuss the confusion even their loved ones have between real and fictional Abbi and Ilana while also discussing this week’s episode.

Fox All-Star Party Red Carpet – Jumpsuits, Playsuits and Gold Blazers

19 Jan

January continues to be red carpet heavy and we’re starting the week with several super stylish looks from the Fox All-Star party, some of which feed into some of my clothing maybe attempts of 2015.

Keri RussellKeri Russell does the black jumpsuit thing and I think my jumpsuit obsession can be traced back to this Keri Russell outfit. This is a really great look on her and she makes it seem so effortless.

Becki NewtonPlaysuits are also on the hmm, maybe list – the bare legs factor makes me lean more towards jump – and Becki Newton is wearing the slightly longer and less bum skimming version of the alphabet Mary Katrantzou romper that Taylor Swift wore to the VMAs. In contrast with the magic eye picture like print (which I could never do) the nude pumps with red tips are the ideal shoe for this outfit.

Mindy KalingMindy Kaling shows off her new ombre locks and a sparkly twist on the menswear trend with a stunning gold Smythe blazer and stripe The Kooples blouse.

Tamara TaylorRocking cropped pants and A+ red lip color is Bones’ Tamara Taylor.

Hannah SimoneThere were some dresses on display with Hannah Simone going a little matchy matchy in a mint summer frock with a silhouette her New Girl co-star tends to wear.

Judy GreerThis has a hint of business wear and I guess this is a work function for Judy Greer. It manages to avoid an all office vibe thanks to the splash of yellow and Greer is another red lipstick queen at this party.

Hello, Hello, Hello: The Comeback 2.08 “Valerie Gets What She Really Wants” Discussion

19 Jan

The Comeback aired its season finale over the holiday break and there was no way we were going to let it get lost in the end of year shuffle. So while this is a little later than normal I am joined once again by Kerensa Cadenas to discuss all things Valerie Cherish, whether we want another season and how neither of us could keep it together for the final 15 minutes.

the Comeback 2.08 ValEmma: For a finale that included shit pouring out over Valerie’s driveway I don’t think there has been a sweeter or more hopeful episode of The Comeback and after fearing that something dark and awful would befall Valerie this was the ending I really wanted but wasn’t sure we would get. There is still no word on whether there will be a season 3 and even though I would LOVE to see more Comeback episodes I would also be okay with leaving the show here because it really is a perfect way to close out the series.

Valerie chose Mickey over the Emmys and all season they had been hinting at how much Val would do for both fame and recognition appearing on a show that annihilated her career and personality. Relationships have been strained and it didn’t appear like there was any way back for Valerie and Mark after their parking lot blow up but it turns out people can surprise you. As we’ve discussed before Valerie is not mean or cruel, she’s just a bit oblivious to how some of her actions might impact those around her and she is very driven when it comes to her career, but on the biggest night of her career and her crowning glory it is the man who has been by her side for 24 years who she runs to.

I don’t know how much Valerie has changed since this success because to me she’s still pretty much the same Valerie and this is apparent when she doesn’t realize that people are applauding her when she walks into Juna’s party. I think maybe she’s still the same but other people are responding to her differently, except Mickey and this is another reason why it is important that she leaves the Emmys for Mickey and not Mark. Juna’s long concerned hug encapsulates this and she can’t understand why she did Seeing Red in the first place, which is a pretty normal reaction because who would submit themselves to Paulie G and that portrayal? This is all part of the “everything is fine” big wide smile mantra she has perfected and it is why those moments of real concern for Mickey really stick with me. They are the OTP of this show and I can’t tell you how glad I am that they didn’t kill him off.

Do you think Valerie has changed?

the comeback 2.08 Juna hugKerensa: I’m not sure Valerie will ever entirely change but I do think that things personally for her got shitty enough where she had to realize what she was doing. If you think about it in the first season, yes, professionally things were a wreck for her, but at the time personally things weren’t bad. Maybe got a little strained because of the reality show but it wasn’t a complete utter rock bottom situation like this was with Mark leaving her and Mickey’s illness. She was crushing it professionally but kinda had to turn a blind eye to everything else until it was wayyyy past the point in which she could continue to do so.

I think that’s what made such a hugely emotional impact on me as well, for Valerie to go to Mickey during the Emmys, a time where she was finally going to shine is what’s important. Whether or not she entirely changes, for me isn’t the point, and I honestly don’t expect her to fully.

Do you think so?

the comeback 2.08 kitchen speechEmma: This is the night Valerie has been working/hoping for which is why it means so much that she leaves especially as everyone keeps telling her that she is going to win. I did wonder at one point that if she stayed then she wouldn’t win, but I’m so glad they went with the alternative. When Valerie gets the Mark text about Mickey collapsing she is initially unsure about what she should do with Jane telling her she has to stay because she is going to win. This is the perfect end for Jane’s documentary if Valerie does win and while I think we were both worried about the finished product (which we of course don’t get to see) Jane misses out on the perfect ending when Valerie leaves without her usual camera crew trailing behind her.

The big filming style switch threw me for a moment but it was jarring in the most magnificent way as the documentary format fell away and left us looking at Valerie in a completely new way. It is the perfect way to shoot this moment because Valerie is no longer starring in her own reality show and it was simply stunning. This is Valerie stripped down not trying to be the most liked best person and this is the most likable best version of her and those cameras aren’t there to capture it. And how beautiful does she look in that gown with the red umbrella?! From the awkward Uber pickup to Mark’s face when he sees her sitting in the hospital room. I’m getting teary just thinking about it.

And when she wins and her speech is so perfect; the kitchen speech prep calling back to the pilot was devastating in its loneliness whereas this is all love (well except for the unseen/unhappy other patient). It made me SO happy and I really was expecting this finale to be so dark whereas it was a big huge win for Val and us watching her. What did you make of the camera style switch and the way she won?

The Comeback 2.08 camera switchKerensa: I loved the camera switch. I thought it was such an interesting parallel that Valerie’s day to day is stunningly beautiful while the reality TV version of her life isn’t. I sobbed through those final 15 minutes and then when she actually won, I think my heart stopped for a minute. I think the way she won was perfect though, she got to share the moment with the people who really mattered to her, the people who’ve been rooting for her for years, not all the camera crews and all that.

Although, her practice speeches while eating in the kitchen would have been GREAT to see onstage.

Emma: Watching last night’s Golden Globes and with all the chat about rain earlier in the day made it hard to not think of Valerie Cherish.

The kitchen scene really works in a similar way to the no reality show cameras in the hospital scenes as it seems like she’s really forgotten they are there, mostly because I can’t imagine her eating this much on camera on purpose. This bit where she gets out the frozen cake (that’s what it is right?) is the perfect representation of those times where you do just want comfort food.

The crack in the wall and the torrent of shit that followed was very on the nose in how it mirrors what’s going on in Valerie’s life and it also gave one very disgusting (and hilarious) sight gag when Brad brings the dress over. This is followed by one of my favorite shots of the season as she is carried to the car by Billy and a shirtless Brad. What did you make of the whole getting ready stuff and especially Jane’s territorial attitude?

The Comeback 2.08Kerensa: Oh the getting ready stuff was incredibly uncomfortable especially when Valerie goes and begs her neighbor to let her get ready in his home. And all his points about Valerie being incredibly selfish were so on point.

Jane’s territorial attitude has been very apparent in the last several episodes and I’m not super surprised? I think she has that attitude a little bit about Valerie, who she does care about, but I think it’s grown more because this HBO project for her is a big deal. She’s making a documentary about women, that’s funded and that would eventually be on HBO–and show what we can assume will be Jane’s vision about women in Hollywood.

What do you think?

The Comeback 2.08 JaneEmma: You’re comments about Jane’s vision are spot on and really I would love to see a Jane spinoff show that runs parallel with this one to see her side of it all. I also think she cares about Valerie, but that she also wants to have an impact on both how Hollywood is run and with her documentary work. I don’t think she’s that bothered about accolades considering her Oscar is a doorstop and she is also aware that an award doesn’t necessarily equate to better work after. She obviously didn’t want Valerie to leave as it takes away from her documentary but in a way this empty chair is a much bigger moment for her to use in her doc. I also love that Paulie G goes up to accept the award and he is essentially shooed away.

We see some returning faces from season one including Jimmy who emphasizes that this is only one night and while it is important, it is not as important as the relationships in your life. I do wonder if this was the extra push Valerie needed when choosing Mickey over the Emmys. The other Room and Bored face making their first appearance this season is Chris and I was surprised (and skeezed) by the brief attraction I felt towards Kellan Lutz. I loved everything about these scenes from the girls following him around cell phone in hand in a zombified state to the fact he only had eyes for Val. In our last chat you wondered if Val was going to sleep with Chris and while she could have done she chose not to so were you happy with how this played out?

the Comeback 2.08 KLutzKerensa: For one, I think this is arguably Kellan Lutz’s BEST work. He’s really great actually. And I agree with you, I was weirdly attracted to him too? But for me, that attraction might not be brief 😦

I loved Val’s whole interaction with Chris. Mainly because that is a DREAM LADY SCENARIO. I mean, in every stage of life, haven’t you always wanted someone from your past irregardless if you were into them or not, to learn of their long yearning feelings for you, trying to get it in and then massively rejecting them?! I have had SO many of these (all dream unfortunately). I never thought she was going to sleep with him though. I mean it was obviously fun to be flirted with and when he swept her into the bathroom (!) But Val’s never wavered–at least–from what we’ve seen about Mark, so I never expected her to go there with Chris. Did you?

Emma: It’s so good and I love that she points out how good it has made her feel. That’s all she needs from this encounter is a self-esteem boost because even though she’s getting all these plaudits and praise nothing can beat a more personal moment like this. And we know Valerie cares what people think and to have a young, hot guy like Chris see her as a sexual being is definitely not what she was expecting. And like you I didn’t really expect to see her fall for his charms other than taking a ride home and the compliments as in her eyes she is still very much a married woman and I cheating doesn’t seem like a Val thing to do.

So the season ended in this really happy and inspiring way, which could be the perfect way to wrap up the Valerie Cherish story but I also want more. I want to see how Val reacts to this new found appreciation of her work and if her marriage can be salvaged as the end of the episode suggests it can. Do you want a season 3?

The Comeback 2.08 Emmy winnerKerensa: I don’t want a season 3. Valerie is very important to both of us and obviously an iconic character but I feel like that finale was the perfect ending for her.

I’d rather leave Val on a happy note than have to see her suffer again. Do you want a season 3?

Emma: I feel how I do about the end of Friday Night Lights in that I would LOVE to spend more time with these characters but both endings are perfect. The slight difference is with how few episodes there are in The Comeback’s run I think there is still a lot more story to tell, so if they announced a third season then I would resist. Seeing Valerie get the happy ending does make me reluctant for them to make more, but I wouldn’t say no to more Val.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

16 Jan

It has been a red carpet heavy week (Golden Globes and Elle’s Women in Television) and we’ve got more fancy frocks on display at the Golden Globes after parties and the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. Plus the TCA winter press tour continues and we’ve got some fun shots featuring the casts of Mad Men and Community.

Diane KrugerDiane Kruger switched out of her silver slinky gown at the InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes post-party; the shorter floral Giamba black and white dress is all the better to dance in. Joshua Jackson still looks just as handsome in the same tux he was wearing at the awards show.

Judith LightJudith Light! Also at the same post Globes party and fabulous as ever in a color that joins the ranks of the many stunning bold hues on display that night.

Mad Men TCAMoving onto the TCA press tour as the Mad Men cast talk about the final half of the final season (*sob*) and this photo of Elisabeth Moss and Vincent Kartheiser has me shipping Pete and Peggy. That should not be a thing. Kartheiser’s beard is looking mighty fine as are Moss’ red pumps.

January Jones TCAMore from the Mad Men panel and because a super smiley Betty Draper is a rarity here is a delightful shot of January Jones. She also happens to be adding to my current leather jacket obsessionMad Men returns for the last time on April 5 with the appropriately titled “The End of an Era.”

Gillian Jacobs TCAMore TCA and Gillian Jacobs in a patterned Tanya Taylor delight from the SS15 collection. I would also not say no to Joel McHale’s super cute dragon sweatshirt.

Emily BluntRed dresses have dominated the awards circuit this week and Emily Blunt’s scarlet Pucci frock is a beautiful addition to the trend. At the Critic’s Choice awards Blunt won for Edge of Tomorrow which was my favorite big blockbuster of 2014 and her speech – at the bottom of the page – with bonus John Krasinski cameo encapsulates why.

Jenny SlateAnother lady and performance I am in awe of is Jenny Slate in Obvious Child so I am so happy to see her get recognized for this role while looking fantastic in Miu Miu. Slate gives an empowering speech to watch and feel good about.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

15 Jan

Everyone is getting back to set and this means it is time for the first “Behind the Insta-Scenes” of the new year with bonus Golden Globes photos involving worlds colliding, pooches and general shenanigans.

Treats from returning shows like Broad City and Looking, plus another excellent guest star making their way to The Mindy Project are all featured below.

Natasha Lyonne captures some of the Orange is the New Black cast (including herself) all dressed up in the all-mirrored ladies room.

Fargo meets Fargo with Allison Tolman and Frances McDormand at the Golden Globes. I’ve already talked about Tolman’s dress here, but I am all over McDormand’s beads and DGAF vibes.

http://instagram.com/p/xuUBQJnLh8/?modal=true

I finally started Jane the Virgin! Five episodes in and it is love. Gina Rodriguez’s Globes essentials include Jane watching over her, which obviously did the trick.

Dogs and ball gowns with Allison Williams; this shows the beautiful detail on her Armani Privé gown in a more informal setting.

The place names and table decorations sure are nice.

The Looking season 2 premiere was just as incredible as this tree is big/old. And just as delightful as the way the guys are posing in this photo.

http://instagram.com/p/xzLJ8kipbW/?modal=true

Broad City is back! Start every dance party ever. And while I am a selfie stick sceptic, I will make an exception for Abbi and Ilana in this two part writers’ room shot.

Here it is from Ilana’s perspective.

*Sob* that Selfie is dunzo but here is John Cho making an appearance on The Mindy Project. In love with Mindy’s Oscar de la Renta belted tweed jacket and matching skirt.

Best of Elle’s Annual Women in Television Celebration

14 Jan

Lena Dunham covers the Elle Women in Television issue (out now) and last night the magazine hosted their annual event celebrating this issue and the many amazing women working in the television industry. Patterns and color aplenty!

Lena ElleThe lady of the hour and Lena Dunham floral Prada works like a charm as does the slicked back bob, smoky eyes and pink lip color.

Juliette LewisMore winter florals on display and Juliette Lewis is stunning in this beautiful dramatic skirt and high neck (nearing turtle territory) black sleeveless top.

Ellie Kemper and Gillian JacobsSo I’m a little on the fence with Gillian Jacobs crop and skirt combo, but Ellie Kemper is slaying it in red lace (more florals). A very cute pairing nonetheless.

Tracee Ellis RossThe scarlet dress trend continues as does Tracee Ellis Ross’ winning red carpet style.

Yara ShahidiTracee Ellis Ross’ Black-ish teen co-star Yara Shahidi is another doing the bold color patterned skirt with aplomb. Not so sure about open toed boots, but overall this is a very fun look.

Cat DeeleyCasual chic from Cat Deeley and I am coveting her Beetlejuice-esque blazer hard.

Constance ZimmerConstance Zimmer’s frock is ticking all the boxes of a perfect not too fancy, but still fancy enough dress – collar, belted and fun print (floral once again). Also bonus red lipstick points are awarded.

Xosha RoquemoreThe Mindy Project’s Xosha Roquemore is a vision of black and white outfit goodness with another crop top I find myself drawn to.

Elle groupClosing things out with a fun group shot with recent Golden Globe winner and Transparent creator Jill Soloway along with Glitterish’s Alison Sudol (from Transparent), Sia in striking orange and Whitney Cummings rocking a starry sky print dress.
