Best of 2017 – Out of the Box: Look of the Week (Part 1)

22 Dec

Welcome to the TV Ate My Wardrobe Best of 2017 coverage! As with”Out of the Box” highlights from previous years everything that features here has already appeared in “Look of the Week.”

There have been a lot of amazing magazine covers this year featured on “Out of the Box.” The first part of this 2017 rundown is dedicated to these striking images. Twelve covers from twelve different magazines. Ruth Negga was a constant fixture this year on “Out of the Box,” particularly during award season. Another Magazine delivered the first stunning issue of the year back in February. Ten months later and it is still on my coffee table. Pride of place. Mahershala Ali was another star of award season, so when GQ unveiled this cover in June it was met with much joy. Considering how grey and miserable it is right now, it is also the boost December needs.Vanity Fair celebrates Serena Williams and motherhood in a beautifully stripped down manner. A nod to Demi Moore’s VF cover from fifteen years ago, while being completely about Serena.
The heritage print revival of 2017 has been one of my fashion highlights. Lena Headey’s walk through the highlands for The Edit was just the way to showcase this sartorial spin. I have strong positive feelings about Kirsten Dunst and polka dots. The two combined on this Nylon cover is the dream. Plus this profile is by glass brick aficionado and one of my culture writer faves, Molly Lambert. Another ‘still on the coffee table’ issue. Best use of millennial pink goes to The Hollywood Reporter with their profile of multi-hyphenate Donald Glover.Everything about Sterling K. Brown’s Emmy win makes me happy. Including Variety’s celebration of this. And Brown’s fabulous socks. Usually the clothes worn on covers cost at least a few months rent, not so with Samira Wiley’s Stylist shot. Here she wears Urban Outfitters and Uniqlo in the most autumnal colors. This is another magazine that is still on my coffee table. Sometimes all you need to make you stop and stare at a magazine cover is a simple beauty shot. The November issue of Allure does just this; Kerry Washington looks like is staring into your soul. What a fun, striking cover from Entertainment Weekly featuring Constance Wu and Henry Golding. And I am already super excited to see Crazy Rich Asians. The costuming is extravagant, plus that velvet suit is bang on trend. The last couple of months has been dominated by Lady Bird chat, the woman of the hour Greta Gerwig deservedly getting a lot of attention. This black and white Bust cover is giving me a lot of Frances Ha feelings. My favorite kind. This is how to do a debut issue. New British Vogue Editor-In-Chief, Edward Enniful made a huge splash with a striking cover starring Model of the Year, Adwoa Aboah. Evoking classic ’80s cover shots without feeling derivative.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Oct

Film festival season continues and this week’s “Out of the Box” includes looks from both London and New York. Pattern continues to dominate and even though summer is over, florals are everywhere. Plus magazine covers continue to make me swoon and there’s a little something from Paris Fashion Week after this bumper post mid-week.

Oh and something I went to in person. I really like the Gucci bow collection and it reminds me a little of the Valentino gowns from last year (also at LFF).

At the Breathless premiere Claire Foy lets the dress do the talking, opting for a smoky eye and no accessories. This continues to be a very busy year for the soon-to-be Lisbeth Salander. More Gucci and Carey Mulligan’s gone Grecian goddess in gold and green at the Mudbound premiere. It is a beautiful look that ditches her usual twee styling choices.
Mudbound director Dee Rees tux jacket game is strong and pairing this botanical print with burnt orange is perfect for fall. It is still early doors, but there is Oscar buzz surrounding this movie and it is definitely on my most anticipated list. It will premiere on Netflix next month (November 17).Also on the highly anticipated list is Call Me by Your Name and at the NYFF both Armie Hammer and Timothee Chalamet have added pattern to their looks. Chalamet’s gone subtle in Prince of Wales check and Armie’s embracing the floral trend. Results are good.

Busy gives A+ Paris posing and also I would like this entire outfit, please and thank you. In Busy and Michelle Stories updates; they dyed Michelle’s hair pink and there was definitely a lot of wine consumed.Yesterday, I went to a the LFF Jake Gyllenhaal ‘Screen Talk’ event and this is less about what he was wearing (pretty standard daytime promotion outfit) and more about getting to attend.

I do plan on writing something a bit longer (probably via TinyLetter), but for now enjoy the video above of Jake discussing his Brokeback Mountain audition.

I’m glad to get a close-up look at Edith Bowman’s Altuzarra floral frock as it looked amazing from our third row seats. And while this is the first time I have been to an event like this IRL, I have watched a lot of these kinds of talks online and Edith is one of the best prepared interviewers I have seen; she asked interesting questions, kept the conversation flowing and had done her research.  In more Jake news; he is now the face of Eternity by Calvin Klein alongside model and advocate Liya Kebode and four-year-old actress Leila. We are officially in fragrance season and this is both a print and TV campaign, expect those towards the end of the month. Yes, I will be swooning every single time.

Not sure what this shot of Lupita is for (magazine or otherwise), but I am in awe nonetheless. Double Claire Foy this week and she’s got two big projects coming out in quick succession; Breathless and season 2 of The Crown. It isn’t surprising to see her on the cover of British Vogue and I love that they didn’t go for something that mimics her Queen styling. Instead opting for a stunning and simple Christian Siriano gown. Green makes for a striking background and Samira Wiley’s Stylist cover image is incredibly captivating. And in good news for your bank account the sweater she is wearing here is from Uniqlo with an Urban Outfitters turtleneck below.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

18 Mar

PaleyFest, SXSW and new magazine covers are all on this week’s “Out of the Box” menu and these events are the kind that bring out the best of the casual/fancy in-between zone, which post-award season is my favorite kind of dress code. Melissa BenoistAt the Supergirl PaleyFest panel Supergirl herself, Melissa Benoist pairs a fantastic hypnotic skirt with a classic black turtleneck and I am so here for this level of fun. And she seems charming as hell to boot (even if I have fallen behind on this show – a mantra I could stitch on a cushion right now #PeakTV).Tracee Ellis RossAnother case of a super fun ensemble for PaleyFest and Tracee Ellis Ross combines two of my favorite things – sequins and stripes – at the Black-ish panel. The look on her face and pose says it all really. This is how an outfit should make you feel.Gillian Jacobs, Katie Micucci, Tami SagherAt the Don’t Think Twice SXSW screening floral and colorful geometric prints ruled supreme. Gillian Jacobs high neck sleeveless dress is mesmerizing and as with Mindy Kaling’s Mindy Project costume sneak peek Kate Micucci is making a strong case for floral rompers. Writer Tami Sagher also looks great and I am so ready for spring frocks.Zoe KazanBows and ascots were all over the recent runway shows and at the My Blind Brother screening Zoe Kazan’s long sleeve dress combines several box tickers; Peter Pan collar, floral and an ascot bow. Kazan has appeared a lot on TV Ate My Wardrobe recently and her insight regarding these events is why she is one of my favorite people I follow on Twitter including her reaction to the kinds of questions asked after this particular screening.

Yes this column is all about the ‘looks of the week,’ but I also get why it is important to ask questions about the film in question and not just dress details. And I definitely want to know about technical aspects, particularly all things costume (as anyone who visits this site will be aware). Jenny SlateMore spring foliage and while I’m not fully on board with sleeve cutouts, Jenny Slate is working this style at the My Blind Brother screening. Post SXSW Slate has gone on a roadtrip with Zoe Kazan and she has been documenting this very fun looking adventure on Instagram.Abbi and IlanaEntertainment Weekly hosted a party at the Spotify House celebrating Mr Robot at SXSW and quite a few of our faves showed up including Abbi Jacobson feeding my leather jacket and pleated skirt craving with Ilana Glazer hitting the t-neck points. This is more casual than the SXSW premiere events and style wise it is similar to the Sundance Film Festival, but switching out knitwear for denim short shorts. Tatiana MaslanyThis is cute and casual from Tatiana Maslany and perfect for hanging out on our future BFF dates. I am also impressed that even with the MANY hairstyles we have seen her rocking that her actual hair is different from every clone version. This is somewhere between Sarah and Helena’s huge blonde mass of curls.Alia Shawkat and Rami MalekTatiana Maslany’s boyfriend Tom Cullen captured the perfect “they look just like sisters’ shot of Maslany with Ilana Glazer and Alia Shawkat at the EW Mr Robot SXSW party and Shawkat poses with man of the hour and Mr Robot star Rami Malek. THRI love the annual Hollywood Reporter ‘Stylist and Stars’ issue and list especially as it comes so soon after a stylists busiest season. Rami Malek is wearing that stunning purple Calvin Klein suit he wore to the Independent Spirit Awards with Ilaria Urbinati and we gave her a shout out at the time because her work with Malek has been incredible.

Celebrating the people who give us plenty to write about when it comes to red carpet style is important and Leesa Evans (who is also a costume designer and has worked on a whole lot of Apatow produced movies such as Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck) appears with Amy Schumer, Jeff K. Kim alongside Michael B. Jordan (who always crushes any suit he is given) and another TV Ate My Wardrobe regular Brie Larson with Cristina Ehrlich. So yes let’s give a whole lot of love to the stylists.Kerry Washington ElleIt is rare to see a sweatshirt on the cover of a fashion magazine and awkward pulling it down aside, this cover is really great and Kerry Washington is always someone I am happy to see showcased in this manner. Washington discusses her new HBO movie Confirmation as well as the changing TV and film landscape. She talks about feeling invisible in her career pre-Scandal and that she’s had a conversation with Viola Davis and Taraji P. Henson regarding this  and how “Television changed the game. Coming into people’s houses on a weekly basis is just a different kind of relationship to the public.” The issue is available to buy on both physical and digital newsstands now.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

10 Oct

The summer might be over, but the best of this week’s style on “Out of the Box” showcases some surprising post summer light attire with business cute and plain white chic. Plus a couple of fantastic magazine covers focusing on showrunners and a splash of animal print color to close things out.

Aisha TylerAisha Tyler’s white mini dress (with pockets!) is jazzed up with some excellent shoe/clutch/bracelet accessories at the American Horror Story: Freak Show premiere and who cares if it is way past Labor Day; this looks amazing.

Karen Gillan KimmelKaren Gillan appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live in something that wouldn’t look out of place on a Taylor Swift post gym sidewalk strut and her legs go for miles. It’s a super cute outfit and I especially love the gold shoulder strap detail (at first I thought she was carrying more than one bag). Short hair is still working wonders even if she’s rocking long wigged locks on Selfie.

Diane Kruger joining Instagram has already given me one of my favorite photos from this week (the cat pictures she posted are also pretty wonderful) and she also unveiled her Australian Harper’s Bazaar cover shot. As they are heading into the warm season down under this Chanel ensemble is perfectly spring boho and a striking image.

Shonda Rhimes THR coverThere is only one option really for who should cover the Power Showrunners issue of The Hollywood Reporter and that’s Shonda Rhimes as the Thursday night TGIT Shondaland drama block – Grey’s AnatomyScandalHow to Get Away with Murder – is killing it in the ratings. In the issue Rhimes discusses a whole host of things including early creative friction on Grey’s Anatomy with studio executives and the recent New York Times profile where for some reason they thought it was okay to label her an “angry black woman” and the subsequent reaction to this horrific piece. Rhimes also discusses returning to Dartmouth this summer, which in turn reveals a hint of what her Mindy Project cameo will entail. The interview is fascinating and can be read in full here.

IMG_1022From one showrunner to another and Lena Dunham is still on her book tour for Not That Kind of Girl, plus this week she has guest edited Stylist magazine. Stylist is celebrating its fifth anniversary so what better way to combine the two than Dunham leaping out of a tiered cake. The cover shot by photographer Autumn De Wilde is also a nod to Dunham’s mother Laurie Simmons as legs are a repeated image in her work. It’s a fun, playful cover and the color palette really helps the image stand out.

Natalie Dormer zebra printClosing this week out with Natalie Dormer in a bold red and orange zebra print House of Holland dress at People’s One to Watch LA event. Dormer is still going for full dramatic side sweep hair as a result of her Mockingjay Cressida styling and as an “Out of the Box” regular I think we will be seeing more of Dormer on here come the huge Mockingjay promotional tour. The chunky straps on Dormer’s Jimmy Choo sandals are maybe a bit too thick for the length of this dress combined with the strong black zebra stripes, but this is a minor complaint.

Mad Men Season 7 Artwork and Jessica Paré Covers Stylist

8 Mar

Mad Men returns for the first half of its final season in just over a month (Sunday, April 9) and the new artwork uses the classic Don Draper illustrated image from the opening credits with a psychedelic twist. Milton Glaser, the man behind the iconic “I ♥ NY” campaign and co-founder of New York magazine designed the poster and it’s treat for the eyes. The theorizing begins when a new Mad Men image is unveiled; last season’s double Don Draper is the most ambiguous and provoked a huge response, whereas other key art has been more straightforward like Don standing in an empty office for season 4 (and seem to have inspired the 50 Shades of Grey teaser). This is definitely the most colorful of the Mad Men campaigns so far and as always a drink is never far from Don Draper. With a trippy image like this it has me wondering whether Ken will be tap dancing again and whether Don will sink into oblivion.

Mad Men season 7It’s likely that there will be several Mad Men cast members covering magazines in the run up to the new season and kicking things off is Jessica Paré on Stylist.

photo1This is a departure from anything Megan related and there is always a push pull with magazine editorials between dressing the actors in clothes you would see on the show or embracing something more in tune with the current year we are in. Paré discusses her personal style “Truth be told I’m a pretty practical person so I do like the idea of mixing more accessible brands with designer” as well as what we already know about “Zou Bisou Bisou” –  “That song really stays in your head. It’s so catchy and you can’t get it out.” Don’t I know it; currently The Good Wife’s “Thicky Trick” is wrestling for its place for biggest earworm. Well, that and “Let it Go.”

Of course she doesn’t spill any secrets about what’s going to happen to Megan in season 7, though the much talked about Sharon Tate t-shirt is brought up “As far as I know it’s just a T-shirt; just a costume.” You can read the full interview here and Stylist is now available on the iPad (and it’s totally free!).

So there’s a little Mad Men taster and we will have much more coverage as April 9 approaches.
