This week sees a lot of regular “Out of the Box” faces and a whole host of events from daytime celebrations to premieres and panel discussions. Plus Teen Vogue continues to blow their adult counterpart out of the water in the cover stakes. Bold pattern continues to reign strong and there is a lot of awesome lady inspiration below.
Last week Lupita Nyong’o’s Variety magazine cover for their annual Power of Women issue caused all the heart eye emoji reactions and here she is at the event honoring the work of this year’s recipients. Wearing a lime green daisy embroidered Dolce & Gabbana; Nyong’o is a springtime vision with a hint of 60s to her look. Excellent lipstick choice too.
Danai Gurira was also in attendance supporting Lupita who is currently starring in her Broadway play Eclipsed. This is the perfect day dress for this event and looks good without drawing too much focus from the person who is being honored. This is also Gurira’s second week in a row on Out of the Box and she is crushing it in a variety of styles this year from super cool jumpsuits to flowing frocks.
Confirmation airs on HBO tomorrow (Saturday 16) and Kerry Washington recently took part in a Times Talk with Anita Hill; the woman Washington is portraying in the movie. This Carolina Herrera dress reads serious with a hint of whimsy in the floral and pink sheer trim. SJP Collection shoes top it all off and Washington looks great. You can watch the whole fascinating and sometimes rage inducing discussion about the making and history behind Confirmation here.
Oh, hello. Emily VanCamp in J Mendel at the Captain America: Civil War premiere with a ‘just the perfect amount of beardy’ Chris Evans. The fact they are posing together gives me some hope that Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter will get quite a lot/something to do in the new movie (even if she doesn’t really feature in the trailers at all).
Game of Thrones season 6 is almost here and Emilia Clarke has been hitting the promo train hard on magazine covers, at the premiere and the MTV Movie Awards. This might be my favorite of the three recent looks we’ve featured as this face emblazoned Miu Miu dress is unusual in the most mesmerizing way.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s “Fresh Faces” Marie Claire cover is striking and at the party celebrating this issue she stood out in a delightful star emblazoned – perhaps as a nod to the stars on cover – Coach 1941 dress; which I am now coveting hard.
Teen Vogue’s cover game this year has been so strong and their Willow Smith May issue is another captivating image choice. As with other recent teen covers (including another one Smith appears on) there is something beautifully disarming in the direct look to camera and the accompanying interview/editorial is just as interesting.
Out of the Box: Look of the Week
15 AprOut of the Box: Look of the Week
8 AprLast week spring fever was in the air with a whole array of bold patterns and color; this edition of “Out of the Box” is a little bit more varied with some very fun outfits, fancy awards wear and more magazine cover stunners.
Despite my white clothing reservations – because I am a spiller – Danai Gurira crushes it at Black Girls Rock! in this very cool Cushnie Et Ochs jumpsuit number that wouldn’t look out of place in Studio 54’s heyday. Gurira is on a red carpet hot streak and all I can say regarding Walking Dead is Michonne better not be the one on the end of Jeffery Dean Morgan’s bat.
More white and Caitriona Balfe does the whole casual ladysuit thing with aplomb at the Television Academy’s Outlander panel discussion. A simple and super cool twist on one of my favorite trends and I’m looking forward to all the incredible costumes when Outlander returns tomorrow (Saturday 9).
Alison Pill in a very cute outfit at the premiere of The Night Manager and one that a) is perfect for someone who isn’t in the project of the event they are attending and b) something I would like to see in my closet.
At the Olivier Awards Uzo Aduba took a break from performing in The Maids and looked elegant in this orange off the shoulder Elizabeth Kennedy gown. And now all I want is a bag shaped like a ball.
Making their official debut as a couple at the Olivier Awards, which makes this sound like we’re stepping out of a society novel and also maybe trying to shift attention from the question Kit Harington has been asked repeatedly since the Game of Thrones season 5 finale.
This isn’t news for anyone who follows celeb dating stories (which I do), but I am always thrilled when IRL couples walk the carpet together especially when their characters were also together on screen. I’m not a hundred percent in love with the shape of Rose Leslie’s gown, but the color and pattern is stunning.
And by Look of the Week I mean look of the week. The shipping of Marcia Clark and Chris Darden was the biggest surprise to come out of American Crime Story (something I wrote a little bit more on in my Observer column this week). Here are Sarah Paulson and Sterling K. Brown at an American Crime Story For Your Consideration event earlier this week; up close I really like Sarah Paulson’s frock, but that level of sheer in the wide shot and lining does not do it for me.
Another striking Lupita Nyong’o magazine cover as part of Variety’s annual “Power of Women” issue celebrating her work with Mother Health International. Excellent trench and background color elevate this shot, but Lupita’s face is what really makes this a standout image.
The Gilmore Girls revival is in full swing and because I am only just finishing up season 1 (I know) I am avoiding reading this Entertainment Weekly article and looking at the photos until I’ve caught up; it is going to be hard but also that is totally on me.
They both look great and I particularly like Alexis Bledel’s ensemble and lipstick (of course). It’s weird seeing them in clothes that don’t give me all the flashbacks to early aughts fashion nightmares.
Emilia Clark put a sparkly bird on it wearing Gucci on her Glamour cover and there’s a lot of chat about nudity on Game of Thrones including Michiel Huisman’s “perfect bottom.”
Out of the Box: Look of the Week
11 MarThis is our first “Out of the Box” post-award season post and guess what? There are still plenty of amazing outfits, events and magazine covers to admire/covet/gaze over. From teen girl superstars to The Americans with a dash of Paris Fashion Week and Broadway openings; we’ve got a wide range of looks from fancy pants to casual cool.
Teen girls taking over the world one magazine cover at a time and this new ‘Dream Teens’ W issue is gonna look great on my coffee table. When discussing Kiernan Shipka’s Dazed feature I mentioned this factor as once again there is an element of direct confrontation in their gaze which is so appealing and there is something incredibly powerful about this shot of Shipka, Willow Smith and Zendaya. The other photos from the editorial are just as strong and you can check those out here along with individual interviews. I am so excited to see what they all do next.
Over at Tom and Lorenzo they remarked that this black Gucci ruffled number is an optical illusion of a dress as from the front you can’t tell that Keri Russell is pregnant, but the side view makes it very clear. Either way, Russell looks fantastic at the season 4 Americans premiere and the vampy lipstick color hits all the right notes.
This is a very different look from the Valentino frock she wore on The Late Show last week showing there are plenty of options for fancy maternity wear. The stacked Gucci platforms are kind of insane (pregnant or not) in close up form, but work from the front in this shot.
Also at The Americans season 4 premiere is Alison Wright taking a break from pussy bows, anguished faces and giant 80s hair in a printed Mary Katrantzou delight. Plus pocket points!
Keeping with The Americans theme and Julia Garner attended the Miu Miu Paris Fashion Week show this week in this super cute and sophisticated look. There’s no word as to whether Kimmy will be in season 4, but Garner has been taking the fashion world by storm modelling for Miu Miu, hitting the Balenciaga runway and featuring on the cover of Italian Vogue.
Paris Fashion Week has definitely delivered on the outerwear front and recent Oscar winner Alicia Vikander attended the Louis Vuitton show – it is the brand she models for after all – in a fantastic blue and white coat. The rest of the outfit is also very Vikander cool and hopefully we will be seeing more Louis Vuitton creations like her sequin SAG and Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty dresses.
Danai Gurira has been crushing it all areas – writing, acting, fashion – and at the Eclipsed opening night afterparty she wore this very pretty and colorful flowing Schiaparelli gown, which is ideal for twirling in. Ruffles are big this week and Lupita Nyong’o works this trend with aplomb in green plunging Balmain and her new InStyle cover also embraces this color in the best possible way. Adding to my magazine ‘to buy’ list.
Olivia Wilde has directed a music video for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes causing instant thoughts of Marnie’s dream wedding aesthetic on Girls. This is also a really great casual outfit for a moment like this; once again proving that Wilde delivers on both the fancy pants events and the more dress down occasions.
Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set
2 MarA mix of Oscars getting ready/parties/day after action with the usual TV set action plus a dash of Broadway in this week’s Instagram highlights.
Nothing made happier about Oscar night than the Alias reunion that took place at the Vanity Fair party. So thank you Victor Garber’s husband Rainer Andreesen for taking this photo and releasing it to the world.
One more because feelings.
What breakfast looks like on the morning of the Oscars. Always avocado on toast and some all important bacon.
And what dinner looks like after winning an Oscar. The Converse change makes Brie a girl after my own heart (I have a mystery huge bruise on my ankle which I’m putting down to wearing heels for the first time in 6 months).
In other pre-Oscars prep Sophie Turner opts for this simple tea with lemon and her invite shot.
Jacob Tremblay continues his adorable reign with these past and present shots with Sofia Vergara and super charming caption to boot. At the Oscars and after parties he got to hang out with several more Star Wars stars. Also adorable.
Chrissy Teigen was one of our Oscar best dressed and here is another view of her dress as she gets sewn into thing (and once again the bathroom question springs to mind).
A really good ad for Neutrogena as both Kerry Washington and Jennifer Garner look amazing (and are both on our best dressed list). Excellent on brand synergy here.
Just like us Oscars edition.

What every post-Oscars outfit should look like.
Moving on from the Oscars and Yael Grobglas is serving up excellent OOTD in a 70s inspired look. Plus yes it always does help having Rogelio behind you.

A behind the scenes look at Gina Rodriguez hanging high up in the air filming one of this week’s fantasy sequences on Jane the Virgin.

A stunning photo from the recent Entertainment Weekly of Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o celebrating Eclipsed’s move to Broadway.

A blood covered Walking Dead cast looking a whole lot happier in this video than we are used to seeing them. It’s nice to see so many smiles.
Why it can be bad to nap on the job.
We’ve had Oscars getting dressed behind the scenes and now for a costuming one with Chloe Bennet getting help with her zip on Agents of SHIELD.
Max Greenfield’s hair is as high as it is wonderful. It might help that fellow passenger Bia Iftikhar is an award winning hair stylist.

A super busy time for Saoirse Ronan with award season and Crucible rehearsals with previews starting Monday. So the day after the Oscars. That really is no break for Ronan. Tavi Gevinson captures the group recording and after reading Stacy Schiff’s The Witches last month I really want to check back in with The Crucible as I haven’t read it since high school.
Out of the Box: Look of the Week
26 FebAward season is almost over, but we’ve got some more treats from the Costume Designers Guild Awards and there is of course the Independent Spirit Awards and the Oscars this weekend. Plus London Fashion Week, magazine covers and more.
I wanted to focus on the costume designers in the original Costume Designers Guild Awards post – it is their awards after all – so there are a few presenters featured here instead. Constance Zimmer’s Laundry by Shelli Segal floral number is the ideal ‘starting to think about spring’ frock and she’s paired it perfectly with baby blue pumps and a mirrored Vince Camuto clutch (Viola Davis is also a fan).
More floral pretty from host Betsy Brandt in a Kayat dress and pastel season is upon us.
Oh hello, Andre Holland.
At the Burberry London Fashion Week show the stars were out including Noomi Rapace giving me all the casual coat slung over the shoulder envy. I’m not sure there are many other people who could pull off such heavy bangs on a haircut this short (maybe Karen O), but I love Rapace’s very distinct style choices. Even if I’m also concerned that her feet must be freezing in shoes like this in February.
I am a sucker for both Breton stripes and trench coats so Clémence Poésy was always going to score high with this look.
This has been a huge week for Danai Gurira as the play she wrote has moved from off-Broadway to Broadway for previews. Gurira’s Liberian Civil War drama Eclipsed stars Lupita Nyong’o and this is a powerhouse combination. On the TV side of things Richonne happened and I can’t tell you how long it has been since I cared about anything on The Walking Dead; the way it moved from super tender to super hot was really well done.
At the Eclipsed preview Gurira did the fantastic coat thing over a bold Altuzarra dress and this color is great on her.
Brie Larson is about to have her very big night if Oscar predictions are anything to go by (I really want her to win) and this cover from Women’s Wear Daily captures a moment of getting ready (in which she was actually getting ready for the Oscar nominees luncheon). In the interview Larson discusses what it has been like shooting a movie (Kong: Skull Island) at the same time as award season commitments:
“On my weekends, I’m wearing designer clothes, getting my nails painted and living a polished lifestyle, then I come back here and I’m climbing mountains covered in dirt. Until this movie comes out [in March 2017], no one gets that. It’s like having two best friends you never invite to the same dinner. But that balance has been helpful because I’ve had zero time to process any of this. Because I’m not in L.A., I can’t gauge how life has changed. I’m still myself.”
And a vague description of what we can expect come Sunday “I really want it to be special and encompass colors and visions that are meaningful to me.” Larson has had a lot more hits than misses and she is definitely one of my most anticipated.
Kiernan Shipka covers the new issue of Dazed magazine and the way she is looking directly at the viewer is disarming, somewhat confrontational and incredibly beautiful. In the interview she comes across as you might expect/hope; smart and also still sounding like a teen. The latter part is important.
Shipka discusses playing Sally – “I was totally connected to Sally’s experience and willing to go on any journey with her” – and how the women on Mad Men influenced her by being “such cool forces.” Despite being in showbiz for pretty much her whole life she has some very normal reactions to meeting other famous people including her description of the time she met Annie Clarke; “It involved me falling apart.” It is a great interview/photo shoot and you can check out the whole thing here.
Out of the Box: Look of the Week
16 OctFashion Week season is over but there are still plenty of sartorial delights on offer this week with striking magazine covers and a whole range of red carpet events.
Taraji P. Henson killing it on yet another magazine cover (keep them coming as far as we’re concerned) wearing a stunning Fausto Puglisi dress with ultra high thigh slits. Henson discusses her work ethic with Essence and how her training informs her performance “These kids are thinking they can do reality TV and come and do this craft that I studied, sweated and grinded. People forget it’s a craft because it’s so pop now… Can they make me believe the words coming out of their mouth?” And it must be said that Cookie Lyon is so endearing because of everything Henson brings to this role.
Another TV Ate My Wardrobe “Out of the Box” regular gives good magazine cover in this moody shot for Variety and Brie Larson is going to be a big red carpet presence this awards season if early chatter is anything to go by. Reviews for Room and Larson’s performance suggest huge things are afoot much to our joy; I just finished reading Room and I am excited to see Larson’s interpretation of this emotionally challenging role.
Turtleneck tanks and ladysuits for Anne-Marie Duff in this fantastic photoshoot for Interview.
Continuing her reign as a fashion queen is Kiernan Shipka – and even though I wasn’t a huge fan of her Emmys Dior, it was at least interesting – wearing Bottega Veneta to the Hammer Museum’s Gala in the Garden. Polka dots and pleats perfection.
Cush Jumbo is hitting style highs both on The Good Wife as potential new Alicia bestie and partner (fingers crossed) and on the red carpet at the Golden Heart Awards in a beautiful pink Michael Kors frock.
Also attending this event is Diane Kruger wearing Michael Kors hot off the runway from the new Spring 2016 and as with Kiernan Shipka she is showing how to wear black and blue together (for some reason the color rule of never wearing these two colors together has stuck with me).
Emily Blunt’s mixed textured Michael Kors dress is a fun play on pleated sequins and her black and gold puzzle clutch is just the touch this outfit needs. Now I am picturing Sicario with Blunt and Kruger as Sonya Cross from The Bridge. If that I had been the case I would have liked this movie more.
Danai Gurira isn’t just an incredible actress, she is also a playwright and Lupita Nyong’o is making her off-Broadway debut in the Gurira penned Eclipsed. Both women look stunning on the opening night with Nyong’o dazzling in red Dior and the play has been getting excellent reviews so far. The wish list of stage productions I would like to see gets ever longer.
Out of the Box: Look of the Week
3 OctTime to check in on the style highlights of the week and it’s all about the movie premieres including Gone Girl, Paris Fashion Week and various other events.
One of the breakout stars of this year has been The Leftovers’ Carrie Coon who came out of nowhere (well, not exactly nowhere as she’s Tony nominated) to devastate us on a weekly basis as Nora Durst. Now she’s starring in Gone Girl as Ben Affleck’s twin sister in a role that grounds the protagonist of this story – and she’s really pretty amazing in it – adding both sympathy to Nick and humor to proceedings. At the New York Film Festival screening Coon looks striking in a beautiful floral strapless gown. Bonus points for the green not too matchy-matchy clutch and strong pink lips color.
Leighton Meester gives a monochromatic twist in Balmain at the premiere for The Judge. There’s something very retro-futuristic about this long sleeved/short hemline dress that makes me think of a 1960s sci-fi or even spy show. Just so long as no one mistakes the skirt detail for spare napkins.
Allison Williams has a very different take on black and white with a sporty contrast collar and waist in super chic Vionnet at the 2014 Global Citizen Festival. It’s a slight departure for the Girls star and while it’s still ultra feminine and kinda preppy, it’s not so overtly girly.
Speaking of chic, here is Natalie Dormer attending the Dior runway show at Paris Fashion week looking laid back and stylish all at one. This is a fantastic coat.
Adding some bright color to this week’s pretty muted “Out of the Box” is Kiernan Shipka in Valentino at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Hollywood Costume opening party. This is a fun, cute outfit on the Mad Men star as she continues to kill it on the red carpet, while still looking her age. A dress like this might not work on an actress over 20, but that’s definitely not a problem here. Instead of opting for strappy gold sandals or blah nude heels, Shipka’s continued the bright theme with amazing orange Valentino ‘Rockstud’ pumps.
One more “Out of the Box” injection of bold color and this one is courtesy of Danai Gurira at The Walking Dead season 5 premiere (the show returns Sunday, October 12) wearing a pink geometric Christian Siriano number. Added skirt flaps have been a big trend this week and I’m enjoying this silhouette shake up.
Out of the Box: Look of the Week
29 AugThe Emmys are over and the red carpet has been awash with fabulous attire (the ‘best of’ rundown is here, here and here) so this edition of “Out of the Box” is a mixture of iconic shots of the week, magazine covers and a new fashion campaign featuring a Game of Thrones star.
While TV Ate My Wardrobe has been Emmy focused this week, another awards show took place with the VMAs and Beyoncé performed an incredible 12-song medley over 16 minutes. One of the defining images came during “Flawless” as Beyoncé stood defiant in front of a huge “FEMINIST” sign (for an excellent article on Beyoncé and this moment head here). It’s been a banner week for women in pop and feminism with Taylor Swift also reconciling her past dismissive thoughts on feminism with an acknowledgement that she is a feminist.
Entertainment Weekly released four in motion Walking Dead covers; this one featuring Michonne is incredible and by far the most striking.
It looks like Nylon magazine is ditching its TV issue special format for their September issue; however one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s TV favorites is covering the ‘Rebel Fashion’ themed edition with Aubrey Plaza in leather and (faux?) fur. You can watch a video of Aubrey here talking about the location of the photo shoot, designers she is into and the final season of Parks and Recreation.
Kit Harington isn’t the only Game of Thrones star booking fall campaigns as Sophie Turner is looking a far cry from the heavy gown wearing and now feathered shouldered Sansa Stark as part of the new Karen Millen showcase. In the accompanying video (which you can see below) Turner is wearing this floral jacket (you can get an oversized version at the moment) as she travels across London to the shoot while the strains of Elastica’s “Connection” (this song sums up my Britpop years) plays over the top. It’s a cool nod to the decade that is influencing fashion at the moment and London is a prominent feature now as it was then.
