The Wish List: Mindy’s Dinner Date Dress

2 Dec

Pattern and color is Mindy Lahiri’s signature on The Mindy Project with multiple prints being a staple style choice. Sometimes all you need is a pop of sparkle and in “How to Lose a Mom in 10 Days” Mindy went for a slightly more demure look. The dinner date intervention required a toned down approach and Mindy opted for an LBD.

Mindy 3.09This is an LBD with a twist and the Ted Baker ‘Reevah’ frock has a Mindy color pop with sparkly pink capped sleeves.

Mindy Ted Baker dressYesterday we gave you holiday party tips from the Broad City ladies and here is a dress that goes way beyond a dinner date; it is an ideal spin on LBD styling for a festive shindig.

The Wish List: Olivia Pope’s Wine (and Dancing) Cardigan on Scandal

25 Nov

Top shelf, ultimate wish list time as Olivia Pope’s most recent wine cardigan of glory goes way beyond the month’s rent splurge, but it sure is a knitwear dream. On this occasion the wine cardigan turned into a Stevie Nicks-esque shawl as it slouched down off her shoulders while she span around and Olivia indulging in goofy dancing like this is rare. I have a hard time watching spontaneous dance scenes such as this one, even if it is kinda adorable so focusing on the outfit through my cringe fingers was a much need distraction.

Olivia dancingBecause of all the dancing it is hard to get a clear or full shot of Olivia’s attire so here is a full shot of the ‘Rib-Knit Ilia Cocoon’ cardigan from The Row (also available in grey and worn by Olivia in “An Innocent Man” earlier this season) so here is a full length shot:

The RowThe price tag is hefty and because of how incredibly warm it looks, I’m pretty sure I would never take it off. This includes in bed (I might make an exception for the shower). An everything cardigan for more than just wine and impromptu dance parties. And for whatever other dangers Olivia is about to experience. At least it is black and therefore avoids the ultimate Olivia Pope spilling dilemma.

The Wish List: Electric Animal Prints on The Mindy Project

5 Nov

Mindy Lahiri hasn’t met a pattern* she doesn’t like and it is one of the reasons why TV Ate My Wardrobe loves the costume design on The Mindy Project. Before the start of season 3 we gave Mindy the Fantasy Costuming treatment and The focus was on both clashing prints and bold color featuring outfits for the office, dates and lounging around.

One such item for a days off is the Kate Spade New York ‘Cyber Cheetah’ sweater in emperor blue and while we picked the right design, Mindy went for the more work appropriate ‘Cyber Cheetah Dawson‘ dress version in the same color from this collection. Pairing it with a leather jacket gives it an edge and the matching thin blue headband adds a simple touch of femininity without going full Blair Waldorf hair accessorizing.

*The Cut has produced an extensive rundown of the “100 Most Insane Patterns on The Mindy Project in Order of Insanity” that is well worth checking out.

The Mindy Project 3.06 blue dressPlus bonus Danny in short shorts running towards Mindy in the background. There is disconnect between them at this moment in “Caramel Princess Time” due to a difference in how they view punctuality, but the matching blues shows some symmetry.

The Wish List: Gina’s Lightning Bolt Shirt and Plaid Jacket on Brooklyn Nine-Nine

22 Oct

Last year Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Gina became an instant TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite thanks to her collection of patterned sweaters, love for wolfies and penchant for interpretive dance. And of course the all-round Chelsea Peretti related goodness. The clothing coveting continues this season and this Wish List is dedicated to Gina’s attire in the recent “Halloween II” episode. No, Gina doesn’t wear a spooky costume and instead she works the whole pattern clashing thing with aplomb.

Gina B99Pairing a Collection B plaid baseball jacket with faux leather sleeves (also available in black and white plaid) with the contrasting lightning bolt shirt from Topshop (it also comes in coral) is one way to mix it up as we head into the chillier season, but it isn’t quite ready to dig out all the knitwear.

Lightning shirtHere are a couple of alternate jacket suggestions:

TartanFirst up more faux leather sleeves and a biker jacket rather than baseball style from Chicwash.

tartan and leatherReal leather-trim with multiple zips and tartan patterned Karl Lagerfeld biker jacket for another take on this trend.

Not forgetting the excellent sweater game Gina brings on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and “Halloween II” was no different:

Brooklyn 99 Gina sweaterPolka dots and sleeved florals – the sleeve/body contrast is a big thing this year – and if you like the look of this ‘Sloane’ sweater but want it in a non-clashing way, Equipment has a couple of other items which have caught our attention using these patterns separately.

The ‘Aubrey‘ polka dot silk dress looks beyond slouchy comfy and I love a 3/4 length sleeve:

Plaid and Polka Dots: Get the Mindy Project Pattern Clash

7 Oct

The Mindy Project always delivers when it comes to costume design as there is a strong sense of who Mindy is when it comes to her clothing choices. Mindy very much dresses for herself and this is part of her charm as she’s not going to shy away from something because it is too bold or sparkly. The confidence Mindy exudes in her attitude towards fashion is infectious and this is a character who embraces pattern clashing with open arms. Mindy Lahiri is not Mindy Kaling, however they do share similar style pointers and when discussing clothes in Vogue, Kaling explains “It’s really tempting to not take chances. But I don’t want to be fearful” and I think this is a sentiment her character shares.

In “Crimes & Misdemeanors & Ex-Boyfriends” Mindy wore an array of patterns including floral, houndstooth and diamonds, but it was the combination of plaid and polka dots that really caught my eye.

IMG_1014Plaid and polka dots rolls nicely off the tongue, however it is a pattern combination that doesn’t necessarily suggest compatibility. Mindy shows they can be worn together and the impact is heightened even further as a result of her plaid color choice. The shirt is by Michael Kors and I think they made the right decision to tuck it in and thereby lose the tie-front detail. Fall is the ideal time for plaid shirts and thanks to Scandal I’ve been practically drooling over the many shirts Rails has on offer. Gap is also a pretty good alternative for something more affordable.

Skirt wise Mindy is wearing Ann Taylor and when it comes to plaid and polka dots there is an endless amount of size and color combinations; if you want to ease yourself into pattern clashing of this kind then it doesn’t have to be as bold as Mindy’s ensemble.

We’ve picked out a few different black and white polka dot skirts ranging in polka dot size, style and price.

Uniqlo polka dotFirst up miniature polka dots from Uniqlo and a skirt I actually own (I’m going through a pleated phase at the moment) and this is a good way to start print clashing as the pattern is so small.

Alice + OliviaNow for something more dramatic in both hemline and polka dot size from Alice + Olivia; even the model is embracing the pattern clashing with checks. Monochromatic top and bottom produces an arresting and somewhat hypnotic image.

Giambattista ValliAnother thing about polka dots other than size/color is the arrangement as they can be in precise rows like the Alice + Olivia skirt or as with this Giambattista Valli the design is more chaotic. The box pleat detail gives a slightly flared appearance and it’s a fun take on this style.

The Wish List: Robyn’s Star Sweater on The Good Wife

30 Sep

Diane Lockhart is the character whose impeccable style I am in awe of, when in reality Robyn is far closer to how I actually dress. Not that this is a bad thing; Robyn is smart and disarms those she is investigating through her brightly colored/bold patterned attire. Not that Robyn has done a whole lot of investigating this season as she’s become more of an assistant (or confidant if you will ) to Alicia while Cary has been locked up.

If Kalinda does come to the new firm – this was one of Diane’s stipulations – I wonder what this means for Robyn and whether they can have two investigators on their books. Robyn and Kalinda’s style varies in a lot of ways and the most obvious is how they dress as Kalinda is all leather and knee high boots whereas Robyn looks more like a college student. Together they have proven in the past to be a formidable team and while Kalinda might prefer to act as a lone wolf, sometimes she needs to hang out with someone who is more fond of pack mentality. And would probably wear a wolf sweater – maybe something like this.

There are several TV sweater superstars and as we are finally in sweater season (insert happy dance here) it is time to relish in this moment. First up Robyn’s star number from The Good Wife’s season 6 premiere.

The Good Wife 6.01 Robyn star sweaterRobyn is wearing a star sweater with raglan sleeves by Olivia Moon and sadly it is no longer available (eBay is now the best bet), but there are other alternatives if you’re looking to go for a starry pattern. Ranging from affordable to a month’s rent prices here are a pick of our current favorites.

WarehouseFrom Warehouse this grey sweater is perfect for casual hanging out or that new law firm you work at (maybe not the latter depending on your role).

WildfoxThis Wildfox pullover has a more summery feel, but that be influenced by the jorts the model is wearing and it can be found at Bloomingdales.

MaisonSomething a bit bolder with this red Maison Scotch sweater available from ASOS.

Chinti and ParkerThis cobalt-blue intarsia stars constellation isn’t as crowded as some of the other jumpers on offer, but this Chinti and Parker Italian cashmere number is just as striking.

DVFAdding a moon to the night sky imagery is TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite Diane von Furstenberg.

CoachStars and the moon are one thing, now we’ve got Coach and their homage to the US Space Program and I could definitely see Robyn in this (April Ludgate too).

Robyn 6.02We will be keeping an eye on Robyn’s sweater game and her cardigans are just as fun including this Alice + Olivia cloud cardigan from “Trust Issues” (sadly no longer available, another eBay suggestion).

The Good Wife 6.02 RobynAnd it’s worth noting that one of Robyn’s sweaters from “Trust Issues” is a repeat from last season (and previously mentioned DVF wish list item). It makes me so happy when a show reuses a costume. Although that dude behind Robyn is clearly judging.

The Wish List: Alana Bloom’s Wrap Dress and a Problematic Character Trajectory on Hannibal

27 May

Season 2 of Hannibal concluded as it began; with a bloody fight and so I am here to talk about wrap dresses. I say this half jokingly in part because this is a wish list piece on Alana Bloom’s wrap dress, which continues the costume design themes we have seen for this character. The finale is exceptional and devastating on a heart and soul shattering level that a break from the bloodbath with a look at outfit choices hopefully won’t seem too out there. It goes deeper than this and despite this being a truly excellent season, there has been one letdown on Hannibal and I will also be examining the unfortunate path Alana Bloom has been taken down.

Regular readers of this blog will already be aware of how highly I regard Alana Bloom on both a character level – yes, her storyline has been problematic this year – and for style inspiration, which has remained on point all year. Colorful, patterned wrap dresses with a feminine silhouette are a go to item for this character and this sets her apart from the rest of the FBI team who tend to wear more muted and practical clothing. Alana occasionally ventures into the field and her costuming signifies her position as ‘the other’ through the use of print, color and flowing scarves.

I’ve talked in the past about Alana’s muddled role as she shifts from a mother like figure to a love interest and this is even more apparent in season 2 as she becomes romantically involved with Hannibal. In case I haven’t mentioned it before, when they showed the Hannibal/Alana kiss during the “next time on Hannibal” I let out a gasp worthy of a daytime soap opera. This was not a joy filled reaction. Happily switching between character motivations and style within one post is becoming my signature of sorts and in the same article as the mother/lover discussion I take a look at Alana’s penchant for wearing Diane von Furstenberg which is a great segue into this week’s wish list item.

Hannibal 2.13 DVFAs with last season’s finale Alana is wearing a DVF wrap – it’s the New Julian Two and at the moment is only available on eBay – the pattern is more muted than the bold red/white of season one, but the purple chain pattern is in tune with the direction Alana’s costuming has taken this year. Red has previously been a dominant color in Alana’s wardrobe and there has been limited crimson in her costuming during season 2. The confrontation with Freddie Lounds is the only occasion during the second half of this season where Alana is in red. Replacing red has been purple which bookends the season and blue which represents her period with Hannibal. It’s like she’s Van Gogh or something to that effect.

Ah yes, Alana’s shifting relationship with Hannibal and this has been a contentious storyline in part because of questions of loyalty as she went from Will’s protector to turning to the man he has been accusing the entire time. However, the real issue is reducing a smart and powerful character (and arguably the lead female) into a love interest that loses most of her agency and it’s disappointing that this is done through sex.

There are attempts to course correct this and reinforce the notion that Alana isn’t at fault for blindly believing in Hannibal “In your defense I worked very hard to blind you.” Alana often gets pushed to the sideline which also adds to the feeling that her character is a device to be employed when it benefits either Will or Hannibal’s arc. Jack gets a better go of it and one flaw in the overall withholding plan from the second half of this season is how far it has pushed Alana out of their orbit and into Hannibal’s. Yes, they needed a character to be Hannibal’s champion and yes Alana made the first move on Hannibal in “Futamono” (though he of course was working very hard to make this happen), but I still find Alana’s journey from savior to pawn to be rather unsatisfactory. As the audience knows the truth behind Hannibal it makes Alana look foolish, despite our knowledge that she is an intelligent character who usually employs logical reasoning.

It is probably why when Alana found out about everything I practically stood up and cheered (ok I actually stood up and cheered), even if it came at this very late point and she is clearly crushed by this turn of events. Oh and on a costuming note, the green outfit she was wearing when she finds out Freddie is alive is the one from her season 2 promo photo which I wrote about here. This also made me very happy.

Alana Bloom promo costumeBefore I jump down the “what colors represent” rabbit hole again, there are some visual reasons that can explain these choices and the lack of red in Alana’s later costuming could be down to Margot Verger’s color palette featuring an array of reds and blacks. In the season finale Alana confronts Kade Prurnell and Prurnell is the one wearing an orangey/red jacket also showing her ‘other’ status. Unlike Alana who is part of the team, Prurnell is the glaring obstacle. Blue has also been seen on Alana before she stops believing in Will, most notably in “Hassun” the episode in which Alana declares that her intention is to save him. However, blue becomes dominant when she enters a romantic relationship with Hannibal and continues even as she begins to question her faith in Hannibal, as you can see in the shot from episode 11 below.

Hannibal and Alana 2.11Back to purple and as I’ve already mentioned this color bookends Alana’s costuming this season – Alana wears a burgundy dress while playing with the dogs in the opener – traditionally purple is for mourning and symbolizes death. Well, considering where we leave these characters broken, bloody and struggling for breath this is rather apt. Every color comes with multiple meanings and on this occasion the use of purple signifies the symmetry between the finale and season premiere. The fight between Jack and Hannibal is of course in both episodes and we are unaware of Alana’s proximity to the fight in the first episode; the thing that unifies the color here is Alana’s belief in Will. This has shifted and so has their relationship due to Hannibal’s manipulation; however I’d like to think this color mirroring shows a deeper connection.

Alana has been deeply violated by being kept in the dark and I’m disappointed beyond her inky black dream – echoing the inky vision of Alana that Will has during his therapy session in the premiere – we don’t get to see much of her reaction to this betrayal. This reduction and lack of screen time is pretty representative of how Hannibal treats Alana and if she survives her fall, I hope she isn’t so marginalized when we return for season 3. Caroline Dhavernas delivers a strong performance throughout and it’s been notably illuminating when she gets to channel the well earned rage, fear and anguish that Alana displays in this season finale as she chooses bravery over blindness.

The Wish List: Chunky Knits, Tees and Patterns on Orphan Black

20 May

Each clone on Orphan Black has their own distinct look and their costuming is one aspect that signifies just how different they all are. The Cosima coat is still top of the ultimate wish list and somewhere between Cosima and Sarah is where my own style preferences stand. Sarah’s wardrobe is dominated by black and Cosima is all about pattern and color; there are also those who are romantically entangled with them and this wish list includes items from Cal (who would be on another kind of wish list) and Delphine. Plus, Helena’s new threads courtesy of Felix and it’s a big clothes sharing week.

Orphan Black Cal cardiganCal’s attire is outdoorsy and rugged with lot of chunky knits, plaid shirts and beanies; he looks like he’s always ready to bolt (just like Sarah) and can handle whatever shit is thrown at him. There is a mystery to Cal and his collection of fake IDs in “Ipsa Scientia Potestas Est” suggest he could be more involved than Sarah expects. Cal’s style is the opposite of Paul’s black tees/immaculate suits, but there is a chance that Cal has a military background like Paul and looks are definitely deceiving. This cable knit brown cardigan from Diesel looks super comfy and it’s probably why Sarah ends up nabbing it.

Orphan blackSarah doesn’t have a whole lot of clothes with her so it makes sense for her to lay claim to something that looks this cozy and she spends a lot of “Governed as if by Chance” instinctively wrapping it around herself. It softens Sarah, as does this connection with Cal. Sadly this cardigan might be lost to the murder/torture location of Rachel’s previously immaculate apartment.

Helena unicornHelena has spent far too long in various blood stained clothes from her off white slip last season to the wedding dress she escaped in. Thankfully Felix donates some of his castoffs in “Ipsa Scientia Potestas Est” to Helena including this maroon tee with a unicorn on it. Helena is a magical unicorn of a character and she is quickly becoming my favorite clone, so this shirt is pretty apt.

Costuming plays an important role in how we perceive these characters and so Sarah’s hard edge is tempered in Cal’s cardie; in a similar respect by giving Helena something that resembles regular clothes she comes across as far less feral. From this wonderfully sneery shot above, the mass of blonde hair and dark roots don’t even give off an air of instability.

Orphan Black HelenaHowever when you factor in the whole outfit Felix has donated, Helena looks just as erratic. Yep that’s a pair of cowboy boots, Beetlejuice-esque pants and a fantastic Felix coat. The cutting of the hair and Helena’s manic gaze, coupled with the strong blue light makes this big bag of surreal. Instead of wearing clothes that read as ultra feminine like a slip or wedding dress, Helena’s now got a more masculine ensemble and this seems like an intentional move as she has been horrifically violated.

Orphan Black CosimaCosima’s lab coat is never too far away and yet nothing about her style screams scientist as she’s the most boho of the clones. Mixing patterns and textures is a key element and in the shot above Cosima is wearing a cardigan with studded shoulders, two turquoise necklaces and a purple ruched waist dress from See by Chloé. Cosima also mixes baggy with fitted pieces and abstract prints tends to be the unifying theme. Cosima is comfortable in her own skin and this evident in how she presents herself.

Orphan Black horse shirtPattern isn’t restricted to Cosima and Delphine’s horse print collarless blouse shows that couples do sometimes mirror each other’s style (Sarah has literally borrowed from Cal’s wardrobe with his cardigan). This reminds me of this French Connection dress from last year and perhaps “put a horse on it” could become an extension of the bird of it all.

The Wish List: Parks and Recreation Unity Concert Style

29 Apr

Season 6 of Parks and Recreation concluded last week with the Unity Concert and big changes. Music festival fashion specials tend to make my eyes roll hard as all kinds of expensive and most likely inappropriate items are suggested – do you really want to be wearing a $300 jumpsuit when you have to use the not so high end festival toilets? This also brings up my greatest fear about the play/jumpsuit trend as you pretty much have to get naked when going to the bathroom and this is even less appealing in the middle of a field. When it comes to dressing for an outdoor music event my first thought is the rather practical “would I care if this got ruined?” as most of the festivals I have been to have a high chance of rain and I don’t really want to get mud all over a brand new dress. Yeah I still want to look good, but I’d rather spend the time enjoying myself rather than being concerned about my clothes. It’s not particularly edgy, but you’re also not going to look like an asshole.

Pawnee is not Coachella and in the Parks and Rec finale there is a distinct lack of underbutt and questionable crochet/macramé attire. Instead it’s all hoodies, plaid shirts, jeans, khaki jackets and Unity Concert tees. No, it’s not the most fashion forward, but it pretty accurately represents the festival fashion that makes sense to me.

Parks and RecreationBen is the only one not wearing a Unity Concert tee as he’s got his Letters to Cleo shirt on underneath his staple plaid. This is one of Ben’s repeated costume pieces and he’s definitely the kind of guy who is comfortable wearing the band shirt he is seeing to the actual gig. Everyone else is wearing Staff emblazoned Unity Concert t-shirts and while these are currently not available from the NBC store, I’m sure this will change in the near future as they have previously sold other Pawnee festival related items. Leslie’s khaki green Battalion jacket from Current/Elliott is something she wore in the season 5 finale and it prompted me to dig out my 10+ year old Topshop khaki green jacket which I adore and has been to many festivals with me.

Parks and Rec AndyAndy and April rocking the plaid and stripes (both in Unity Concert tees). Costume design on shows that feature high end designer pieces is all about aspiration, Parks and Rec (and probably New Girl) is the nearest to how I actually dress and I adore it for his reason.

Parks and Rec Jean Ralphio sneakersThere’s always one and Jean-Ralphio is not only wearing double ankle monitors, but he’s also sporting a spectacular pair of Nike Roshe Run Tiger Camo sneakers which are just as bold as he is. These are fine for a sunny venue, though there’s always scuff danger in a large crowd situation.

Parks and Rec Leslie and BenPost concert fashion is completely different and as the concert was all about saving this merger, Ben and Leslie are on work duty. Ben has switched out his Letters to Cleo tee for a tie and Leslie’s ditched the khaki for this beautiful cherry blossom Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress. This definitely falls into the aspirational column (and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Alana Bloom in this over on Hannibal, the shows are VERY different but these two characters share style pointers).

The three year time jump shouldn’t impact the costume design too heavily I shouldn’t think; I do hope they manage to tame Leslie’s bang situation by then and I’m looking forward to finding out why Ben was all dapper and tuxedoed up in that final scene.

The Wish List: The Cosima Coat on Orphan Black

22 Apr

With the return of Orphan Black so comes my obsession with the red Cosima coat and it made a very important appearance in “Nature Under Constraint and Vexed.” There are a few costume items that would feature on an ultimate wish list and the crimson Cosima coat would be up there (with April’s hoodie and an Olivia Pope Burberry trench).

CosimaEach of the clones has their own distinctive look and whereas Alison is all about the Lululemon and Sarah barely wears anything that isn’t black, the red military-inspired coat, glasses and dreadlocks are part of Cosima’s signature style. In the season 2 premiere, Sarah gains entry into a Dyad Institute party while dressed as Cosima. As with previous attempts of doubling for another (Alison and Sarah have both pretended to be each other) a quick interaction or glance and it’s totally believable, anything more and it becomes problematic. There is no way that Sarah can get dreads in this short amount of time so the coat and glasses are the important props in this deception. Sarah’s probably gone a bit too heavy on the eye makeup as you can see in the shot below.

Orphan Black Sarah as Cosima

While it will always be the Cosima coat to me, it does go by another name and that is Sabrina. It’s from TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite Diane von Furstenberg and while it’s either sold out or no longer available on most sites, eBay currently has a few that you can bid on. There are other alternatives and a red coat is a welcome addition to any wardrobe.

DVF CoatIn all the model photos the high funnel like collar has been left undone, this is never the case on Orphan Black and Cosima always has it both belted and buttoned. This coat is like Cosima’s armor and hopefully Sarah remembered to pick it up on her way out of the Dyad Institute.
