Best of the Emmy 2015 Red Carpet – Sparkles, LadySuits and Shoulder Chains

21 Sep

Welcome to the TV Ate My Wardrobe Emmy red carpet coverage and after plenty of amazing pre-party looks the main event delivers on fantastic frocks, ladysuits and some eyebrow raising outfit choices. There are many outfits to discuss and so we have three posts offering up our highlights of the gowns, suits and those garments which are harder to categorize.

Enjoy!

Aubrey PlazaHands down Aubrey Plaza in glitzy Alexandre Vauthier gown is my overall favorite of the night and everything about this is perfection; Aubrey and her Parks and Rec character April are TV Ate My Wardrobe style queens and she makes this whole thing look so effortlessly cool.

Tatiana MaslanyWhen Tatiana Maslany stepped onto the red carpet I maybe had a minor meltdown at this #LadySuitWatch2015 moment. Maslany did joke that she wished her Bouchra Jarrar white tux was cutoff shorts instead (much like her Friday party outfit), in fact I don’t think she was joking as everyone appeared to be melting in the LA heat. All the heart eyes.

Taraji P HensonWearing custom Alexander Wang and spicing up a black dress with bike chain straps, pleats and the ideal balance of sheer and cut out elements makes Taraji P. Henson a winner on the red carpet, even if she did miss out in her category. Not that she seemed to mind as she cheered on Viola Davis.

Christina HendricksAfter attending the Naeem Khan NYFW runway show last week Christina Hendricks chose this designer for her last Mad Men Emmys moment and she looks like an Art Deco sensation in this gold beaded gown.

Carrie BrownsteinMore #LadySuitWatch2015 bliss with Carrie Brownstein in Stella McCartney. That lip color!

Kerry WashingtonTalk about bold sparkle from Kerry Washington in Marc Jacobs. This is one fancy battle Washington is headed toward.

Claire DanesMore shoulder chains from another Best Drama Actress nominee with Claire Danes in a sequinned Prada delight and sporting a Grace Kelly like faux-bob.

Jill SolowayJill Soloway rocks a lot of polka dots.

Sophie TurnerA different spin on red carpet attire and another take on menswear trend from Sophie Turner in a Galvan jumpsuit and this shade of violet blue with her red hair is stunning. Excellent accessorizing too.

Lena HeadeyGame of Thrones did very well on the awards and style front and even though Lena Headey didn’t win in her category this Zuhair Murad Couture gown is divine.

Nikolaj Coster-WaldauWhile we’re on the subject of GoT here is a hot dude in a tux break courtesy of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Oh, hello.

Sofia VergaraThis is a signature Sofia Vergara look in metallic St. John and a style that is still working wonders for her.

Amanda PeetGonna throw in a couple of black frocks to round this first post off with and Amanda Peet’s red lipstick game is strong and the same can be said for her Michael Kors floral textured gown.

Lady GagaLady Gaga sauntered on the red carpet looking dramatic and Old Hollywood with a modern twist in Brandon Maxwell. I cannot wait to see more of her American Horror Story: Hotel costuming (even if I will probably only watch a handful of episodes).

JLDThings you can rely on from the Emmys – if Julia Louis-Dreyfus is nominated she will win and her dress choice will be something classic. Tick for both and while her Safiyaa gown is not going to reinvent the wheel she does look fabulous.

A late #LadySuitWatch2015 addition and one I can’t believe I missed earlier because Lisa Kudrow looks like a BAMF here. And while she didn’t get her Valerie moment I’m so glad The Comeback was at least in the fight. Stay tuned for Pretty in Pink and Bold Color and Print red carpet rundowns.

Best of the Pre-Emmy Parties – Tea and Nominees

20 Sep

All the parties this weekend for those who work in TV land and Emmy day is here! Before we get to the fancy dresses of the awards (check back in the morning) there are more fun frocks, ladysuits and generally fabulous outfits and accessories to scroll through.

Yesterday we covered the Entertainment Weekly and Variety shindigs; both offering some excellent sartorial moments and today we are taking a look at the BAFTA TV Tea and the TV Academy pre-game event. Quite a few of these actresses are on our most anticipated list for tonight.

Tatiana Maslany BAFTAAfter dipping her toe into the menswear trend in tailored perfection Tatiana Maslany has gone for something far dreamier in Preen by Thornton Bregazzi. The colorful stripe detail on the sleeves gives this dress a much needed pop of color.

Tatiana Maslany LegoNow for a closeup up of her Lego clutch from Les Petits Joueurs and a brand that is getting a lot of red carpet attention of late; including Taraji P. Henson accessorizing her Empire premiere look with this fantastic keyboard version.

Tatiana Maslany Emmy pre partyOne Tatiana Maslany is never enough as Orphan Black is so good at pointing out and here she is at the Emmy nominee event wearing one of my favorite designers; in a striking Roksanda Ilincic skirt from the S/S 15 collection. Paired with a simple black tee and another Les Petits Joueurs clutch (you can’t see it in this shot but this is it) to complete a winning ensemble.

Andre HollandHot dude in a suit break courtesy of The Knick’s Andre Holland. I am very excited to have this show back next month.Kiernan Shipka BAFTAThis could be standard cute dress fare from Kiernan Shipka, but the interesting color/texture choice makes her stand out.

Sophie TurnerSophie Turner can join the #ladysuitwatch2015 gang wearing Chloe even without a jacket and this is a fun take on this trend.

Uzo AdubaA floral treat from Uzo Aduba in an ideal dress for BAFTA TV tea.

Madeleine MantockAnother and somewhat abstract take on a floral print with a lovely watercolor effect from Madeleine Mantock. Not sure about the sliver wedges with this outfit and they’d be more suited for something a little bit more 70s. At least they’re not beige.

Yara ShahidiSo Yara Shahidi’s strappy sandals are a little on the beige meh side, but the rest of her outfit is so vibrant and fun that I’ll give her a pass.

Emily Robinson and Jill SolowayJill Soloway has moved away from 60s optical illusions to a trippy forest mural and once again I am so in love with her choice of buttoned up patterned shirt. Mini-Gaby Hoffmann (the Transparent flashback casting is so spot on it is eerie) Emily Robinson goes beige sandals, but her dress is adorable.

Best of the Pre-Emmys Parties – The Frocks

19 Sep

If the pre-Emmys parties are anything to go on then we are in for a treat tomorrow as there are plenty of fabulous outfits on display from #LadySuitWatch2015 to the patterned and super chic dresses below. There’s a strong element of fun at these parties as everyone is relaxed (or at least pretending to be) prior to the big show. This color, print and the caped sleeves makes Troian Bellisario an instant standout. Plus she’s pulling off what could be an awkward length. Plenty of fantastic cute above the knee frocks including Constance Zimmer’s long sleeve black and white floral delight. Currently suffering from UnREAL withdrawal.More florals and an 80s prom feel from Sarah Hyland in Oscar de la Renta. All this needs to complete this theme (or probably doesn’t) is a giant bow. Pockets! And a romantic take on this on trend from Grey’s Anatomy’s Camilla Luddington wearing an A.L.C. dress and Stuart Weitzman heels. Tina Majorino is still rocking one of my fave short hair styles (and I might be biased, but I love a short haircut) and she looks flawless in embellished metallics. A lace delight from Zoe Lister-Jones and a berry lip color I’m now adding to my Wish List (when I find out the shade/brand).   Zoe Kazan’s dress is a patchwork perfection and bf Paul Dano looks dashing in all the brown with a hint of blue. I got Olive Kitteridge on DVD (yes I still get those) for my birthday and I’m really looking forward to having my heart broken all over again. The amazing colourful prints continue with Yvette Nicole Brown in Eliza J. Color blocks for Erinn Hayes and this is giving me all the 70s really cool party vibes. Another ensemble that’s reading my favorite fashion decade (I’m so fine with the heavy 70s influence right now) and Maggie Gyllenhaal needs a cocktail to complete this look.  Getting a Cabaret feeling from Gwendoline Christie’s robe like dress and only Christie can wear something like this and induce all the gleeful clapping.A fun play on black fit and flare with Jane Krawkowski adding a touch of stripes to a classic style.
This is a really great silhouette on Christina Hendricks and another black dress triumph. I toyed with putting Danielle Brooks in the #LadySuitWatch2015 post as this Lafayette 148 New York dress is tuxedo inspired, but it doesn’t really matter whichever list Brooks goes on as she looks incredible either way.

Best of the Pre-Emmys Parties – #LadySuitWatch2015

19 Sep

One trend we can’t get enough of here at TV Ate My Wardrobe comes in the form of tailored menswear with a feminine spin. The reigning queen of #LadySuitWatch2015 on television is Hannibal’s Alana Bloom and she’s got some real life rivals from the Entertainment Weekly and Variety pre-Emmys parties. This very busy fashion month just got a whole lot busier and with plenty more sartorial treats. Aya Cash looks spectacular in green and blue tartan pairing it with a simple white blouse. Between Gretchen’s buying stuff meltdown (of which someone very near and dear compared me to and I’m not sure how to take that) on this week’s You’re the Worst and this ensemble I am very much doing all the heart eyes at Cash. Someone who is always on point is Ashley Madekwe and she is killing in in this double breasted matching green suit. If you look at Jill Soloway’s outfit for too long it feels a little hypnotic or like an optical illusion from the 1960s, but this is very much in line with her style and I love the buttoned up blouse. #LadySuitWatch2015 isn’t just about the pants and Tatiana Maslany black shorts look is a super chic and a playful twist on this style. And I just remembered that Maslany is nominated for an Emmy. That’s enough to temporarily forget Emmy snub sadness.  This is how you do elements of sheer without making me want to pull my hair out. Plus Amanda Peet has the all important red lip perfection going on. So we’ve entered the jumpsuit portion and while I still have conflicted feelings about this garment type (I still need to try on more than one this year), Beth Behrs in Elisabeth Franchi is giving me nothing but good feelings. There’s something very 70s about Uzo Aduba’s wide legged white jumpsuit and it looks ideal for dancing in, but with plenty of spilling peril.

Empire and The Mindy Project Premiere Red Carpet Highlights

13 Sep

New York Fashion Week, Creative Arts Emmys, film festivals galore and fall TV premieres continue this weekend as the busy September calendar produces plenty of red carpet moments to talk about. Both Empire and The Mindy Project had their premieres this weekend with both showing off stylish outfits from beyond the screen.

Taraji P. HensonBlunt bangs and a striped take on the LBD for Empire’s Taraji P. Henson at Carnegie Hall and Cookie Lyon is up there for most anticipated character wardrobe for the new season.Taraji P. Henson purseThis Les Petits Joueurs Lego piano key clutch is everything.

Naomi CampbellMetallic cool for Naomi Campbell and a super high sexy skirt slit.Mary J BligeQueen Mary J. Blige in a silver studded long sleeve black mini dress working one of the big trends of the evening.Mindy Kaling Mindy premiereMoving onto The Mindy Project and Mindy Kaling switched out her super fancy red custom Salvador Perez for sparkly black Diane von Furstenberg. Xosha RoquemoreStriking red and black plaid, which is perfect for fall from Xosha Roquemore. And it is once again making me long for Freddie Lounds inspired knitwear.

Best of the Creative Arts Emmys Red Carpet

13 Sep

The Emmys like to start early dishing out their Creative Arts awards prior to the big show next weekend. This includes costume design, guest star, production design, theme music and the red carpet delivers some fun and stunning looks. The Creative Arts Emmys will air on Saturday, September 19 on FXX and the full list of winners can be found here.

Mindy Kaling EmmysMindy Kaling has a very busy week ahead of here with season 4 of The Mindy Project and her new book Why Not Me? coming out/airing on Tuesday. Double press duty ahoy. Mindy also had double Saturday event attending with the Creative Art Emmys and The Mindy Project premiere party (more on that later) and she wore a stunning custom made Salvador Perez gown to her first soiree. Perez is the costume designer on The Mindy Project and was nominated (sadly he didn’t win), but Kaling showcases his work in stunning style. The cape is everything and gives me Lupita at the Golden Globes feels.

Mae WhitmanA really funky take from Mae Whitman wearing floral Alice + Olivia.

Rachel BrosnahanA simple, but elegant white gown from House of Card’s nominee Rachel Brosnahan. Could maybe do with a bold red lip color.

Nina DobrevSomething a little different from Nina Dobrev in Mugler, but it is her Sophia Webster ‘Poppy’ sandals which have really caught my eye.

Joanna SotomuraEmma Approved’s Joanna Sotomura wore a pleated and embellished bodice gown going full ethereal beauty. I still really need to see Emma Approved and not just because my name is in the title.

Katharine McPheeAnother beaded stunner with Katharine McPhee in Naeem Khan.

Key and PeeleEntering the pairs posing section of the red carpet and kicking off with guys in a suits; oh hey Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele. That is one big bow tie.

Chelsea Peretti and Jordan PeeleMore dashing Jordan Peele and this coupling still makes me very happy as does Chelsea Peretti’s Lublu Kira Plastinina gown.

Constance Zimmer and Shiri ApplebyUnREAL is the show of the summer and this is one onscreen pairing I would like to see so much more of. Yes I have thoughts about Shiri Appleby’s super high split (which would work so much better without the gun holster looking element), but her earrings are fantastic and the thought of heels at the best of times makes my feet instantly hurt. I also love the monochrome thing they’ve got going on with each other and Constance Zimmer’s dress is simple chic.

Kathryn Hahn and Jill SolowayTransparent took home a whole bunch of awards (including the theme music which makes my heart ache and full of so much joy every time I hear it) and I am so here for Kathryn Hahn’s dress which in itself is making my heart ache as it reminds me of wallpaper in my grandpa’s old house. Gonna give Jill Soloway the polka dot points just because.

Margo MartindaleRounding things off with one of the winners and Margo Martindale patterned jacket is rather fabulous as is the fact that The Americans is now an Emmy winner. However it would be nice if they could recognize far more than just the person who was in one scene, but hey it is a start.

Dresses of the Venice Film Festival Jury – Black Mass Premiere

5 Sep

Red carpet treats continue to be delivered from the Venice Film Festival with Diane Kruger and Elizabeth Banks hitting the dramatic notes at the Black Mass premiere.  First up is Diane Kruger crushing it in a velvet BOSS gown from Jason Wu and on her Instagram she notes that all of her looks for this festival are inspired by Italian actresses from the 50s and 60s; a playful twist on a classic style. Bonus Joshua Jackson in a tux. Happy Saturday!Going big in Andrew Gn and showing why I cannot wait for the next and final Hunger Games press tour. It’s a whole lot of dress and Elizabeth Banks is working it.  In motion going up the stairs gives a fantastic glimpse of the super stacked Brian Atwood shoes.

And from my new favourite Instagram account here is a fun behind the scenes shot of Banks.

Dresses of the Venice Film Festival Jury – Day 1

3 Sep

September is a busy month for fashion, TV and film and as I’ve previously written it always feels like the start of a new year (I’ve been out of full time education for a few years now, but my brain is still wired to the academic calendar). The Venice Film Festival kicked off yesterday and the jury consists of some TV Ate My Wardrobe faves; day 1 of the red carpet and photocalls definitely delivered on both the casual and formal threads so I’m taking this as an early birthday present.  If there was a daytime theme it would be florals and Diane Kruger is kicking it in sailor inspired Preen. Pairing this with black Chelsea boots is giving me slight My So-Called Life vibes (DMs would be full MSCL vibes). Also pockets! Going full floral in Dolce & Gabbana and Stuart Weitman sandals; Elizabeth Banks is a romantic dream. Paz Vega dons vintage looking Salvatore Ferragamo and stacked platform peep toes.

I would like all of these dresses in my closet please. Comtinuing the floral trend is Emily Watson at the Everest photocall and she looks delightful in a bold take on this print. Bonus dudes in great suits includes a dreamy beardy Jake Gyllenhaal in Salvatore Ferragamo and Jason Clarke (that hair has to be for a role) in walnut Bruello Cucinelli. Pretty in Prada and caped perfection for Diane Kruger at the Everest premiere.  The ladies of the jury are also coordinated in their evening wear in such a way that is unique to the individual and shows that there was maybe an email chain laying down themes; pale and ethereal gowns with slight embellishments. Dolce & Gabbana again for Elizabeth Banks and an amazing red lipstick to top it all off.

A beaded Ralph & Russo beauty for Paz Vega in another stunning turn. Bonus Jake in velvet and he’s once again in Salvatore Ferragamo and wearing it so well. Because she is a Magical Fashion Unicorn, Kruger can pretty much make all jumpsuits work so effortlessly including this Cushnie et Ochs ensemble at the opening dinner event.

So many amazing outfits and it is only day 1!

Teen Choice Awards Red Carpet: Best Sparkles

17 Aug

The Teen Choice Awards is not meant for me* and as I’m scrolling through thumbnails I’m coming up blank on who half of the attendees are (once again this awards show is not meant for me), but there are a couple of super sparkly dresses that caught my eye and so let’s start the week with some pretty.

*I love teen movies and shows both from when I was a teen and now, but this is only a tiny part of teen culture hence the blanking on so many faces.

Mae WhitmanFirst up Mae Whitman in a really fun Novis frock that manages to incorporate color, pattern and sequins and still look super chill. Whitman is a delight as is her choice of attire.

Gina RodriguezI’m still mad Gina Rodriguez didn’t get an Emmy nod (she had the best FOC ad for starters and also there’s THAT performance) but here she is looking great in Alberta Ferretti. There is something 70s crotchet cool about this (if such a category exists) and it’s manages to be TCA fun while also looking like something she could wear to the other TCA.

Comic-Con Fashion Round-Up Part 2: Panels, Parties and Photocalls

14 Jul

More Comic-Con fashion from the panels, parties and photocalls with an array of style choices from casual cool to high end chic. Yesterday we covered the annual Entertainment Weekly party and the Hannibal panel; now we’re rounding up the best of the rest from the over weekend.

Tatiana MaslanyPairing Tanya Taylor with Adidas is such a fantastic move from Tatiana Maslany and the three stripes classic jacket is giving me a strong hint of 90s Britpop nostalgia. This might be why this is my absolute favorite outfit from this year’s Comic-Con. So simple and yet so effective.

Maisie Williams Comic ConA really good style weekend for Maisie Williams and at the TV Guide Fan Favorites panel she wore a super cute white blouse paired with green shorts. Now to find out where the blouse is from as the lipstick and bunny motif is adorable.

Natalie Dormer and Sophie TurnerSo much color, print and texture coming from the Game of Thrones cast. Time to play fake photo assumption and it looks like Natalie Dormer is being super awkward around Sophie Turner as she musters up the courage to talk to her…

Sophie Turner and Natalie DormerQuickly followed by longingly gazing into each other’s eyes.

Natalie DormerThe GoT cast were hot on double panel duty (Maisie Williams for Fan Favorites, Sophie Turner with X-Men and Gwendoline Christie at Star Wars) and Natalie Dormer switched out patterned pants for a stunning Mary Katrantzou dress, which looks really great as she strides across the stage at the Screen Gems panel.

Keke Palmer and Skyler SamuelsThe Scream Queens cast were out in full effect and it only just occurred to me that I have only ever made it to the end of one season of a Ryan Murphy show – American Horror Story: Coven for some reason got me to stick it out and I can’t figure out why – and from the preview this *could* be one that sticks. Or it could be like all the others where I quit a few episodes from the end. At the panel Keke Palmer cozied up to Skyler Samuels and the orange lace and navy blazer perfectly complement each other.

Skyler SamuelsAt the photocall Samuels wore a patterned (covered with florals, lightning bolts and hearts) wrap dress for a perfect summer frock vibe.

Gwendoline ChristieWhile this doesn’t have the same sartorial flare as some of her previous outfits I still really love this shot of Gwendoline Christie posing with her Star Wars co-stars Domhnall Gleeson (excellent belt and beard combo) and Adam Driver.

Kate Mara comic conA battle armor mini for Kate Mara in Valentino.

Willow ShieldsWhat looks like an excellent homage to the 20th anniversary of Clueless with multicolor plaid for Willow Shields at the panel for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.

January JonesA fun spin on the LBD from January Jones at the Fox party in a CG frock with red lipstick and curls to make the outfit pop. Plus all important pocket posing utilizing.

Ashley Madekwe FoxI’m pretty sure only Ashley Madekwe and Diane Kruger could really pull off this Self-Portrait asymmetrical crop top with matching culottes; such a fun graphic print and Madekwe has an excellent sartorial eye.
