Out of the Box: Look of the Week

24 Jul

A mixture of red carpet, editorial and candid in this week’s edition of “Out of the Box” with super cute summer frocks, an ideal festive party look and a fancy pants suit.

Amy PoehlerJust one week to go before Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp is unleashed on Netflix and Amy Poehler’s colorful graphic block ensemble coupled with pink pumps is a treat. And now I’m wondering if her clutch has “Please” on the other side as it matches the font of her book.

Cara DelevingneCara Delevingne model star power means that pretty everything she has worn on the Paper Town promo tour has looked great because she sells it, even if at the same time one of my not so famous eyebrows has been slightly raised. Sparkly long sleeve Saint Laurent may seem more like a dress to save for all those holiday parties come December, but Cara sure as hell looks like she could go dancing at Studio 54 no matter what the season or that it is now a Broadway venue.

Rachel McAdamsA really simple and elegant black Self-Portrait dress for Rachel McAdams at the Southpaw New York premiere and even though it isn’t quite #ladysuitwatch2015 wow, it is still a really great choice. It does resemble an off the shoulder version of the dress she is wearing in the next True Detective and the screen lights up whenever she is on. Basically I want this season to just be McAdams looking for clues with Tim Riggins with a side order of Colin Farrell.

Emmy RossumWearing what is pretty much the ideal summer in the city outfit (would also work for the countryside, maybe beach-adjacent) and Emmy Rossum’s floral frock is delightful.

Michael B Jordan VogueSticking with florals and switching it up as dude attire with Michael B. Jordan crushing it in the August issue of Vogue. Jordan’s red carpet style is never dull as he embraces color and pattern so this Dolce & Gabbana Alta Sartoria is perfect for his bold sartorial choices.

17 Jul

A lot of great outfits have graced these pages this week thanks to Comic-Con, but don’t worry we’ve got plenty more thanks to premieres, other red carpet events and the ESPYs. Plus new entries into the all important #ladysuitwatch2015.

Brie LarsonA fun Michael Kors dress for Brie Larson at the Trainwreck premiere and the color block pleated bottom turns what could’ve been pretty dull into something wonderful.

Amy Schumer and Leslie MannLeslie Mann’s floral Dolce & Gabbana number is a delight and Amy Schumer’s super sexy and side boob showing Dion Lee number is perfect for this event. Even if I can’t stop thinking about how hot leather must be in the summer. Excellent strappy black heels from both ladies.

Zosia MametZosia Mamet gets a lot of flak for her red carpet attire, but there are some really good moments including this navy Jill Stuart keyhole frock and I am so in love with her green pumps.

Tilda SwintonThis is pretty tame for Tilda Swinton and while I saw some talk of their disappointment at this outfit, I’m gonna give some prayer hands emojis for this tailored Haider Ackermann look.

Rachel McAdams and Jake GyllenhaalTim Riggins is Rachel McAdams’ rumored beau, but she attended the ESPYs with Southpaw co-star and beard grower extraordinaire Jake Gyllenhaal. McAdams is showing off her new shorter ‘do (I’m very into her choppy True Detective bob right now) and enters the #ladysuitwatch2015 excellence list in this super sexy red Cristiano Burani ensemble.

Caitlyn JennerWearing custom Versace, Caitlyn Jenner delivers an incredibly moving speech at the ESPYS and this gown is simple chic at its best.

AnnaSophia RobbMore cute summer prints on display at the New York premiere of Irrational Man and AnnaSophia Robbs’ Giamba dress and sandals is an ideal look for this warm time of year. By the way I still miss The Carrie Diaries.

Laverne Cox and Parker PoseyBest and maybe most random “Out of the Box” pairing this week goes to Parker Posey in all her turban and glitzy glory with Laverne Cox in an Opening Ceremony mini dress and amazing yellow Kenzo bag at the Irrational Man premiere.

Kiernan Shipka and Chirstina HendricksThey didn’t get to spend very much time together on screen, but I am so here for this Mad Men duo on the red carpet and two very different takes on floral. Christina Hendricks is wearing a dreamy BCBG Max Azria maxi dress for hosting duties at the Los Angeles Confidential ‘Women of Influence’ Celebration and Kiernan Shipka opts for a very cute Giamba frock to support her former co-star; Giamba is this week’s go to brand for young starlets.

10 Jul

Before the domination of Comic-Con panel and party pictures we’ve got a mix of magazine editorials, fashion week styling and a hair conspiracy that could eclipse Felicity.

Gillian Anderson WMesmerized by this stunning shot of Gillian Anderson from W Magazine’s Pop Issue and we are so lucky to have this much Anderson on TV right now. From her current role as Bedelia on Hannibal to the forthcoming final season of The Fall AND the all important/super exciting X-Files revival. The latter unleashed its first bit of new footage this week and even though it was only a couple of seconds long the sight of Mulder and Scully with their guns and flashlights drawn full on made me yelp with joy.

[Source]

Mindy KalingMindy Kaling looking fierce as fuck also from the Pop Issue of W Magazine as she looks ready to steal your heart and a 1930s gangster’s mind. That or she is rivaling everything Blake Lively from the New Year’s scenes in Age of Adaline (a movie I somehow liked enough to see twice).

Kate MaraCovering this month’s issue of Flare is Kate Mara and they have styled her in whole array of dreamy and romantic outfits including this stunning Preen by Thornton Bregazzi top. It’s all very delicate, lovely and on occasion over the top, which is delightful as is her choppy auburn bob.

LupitaShowing how to simple and effective chic at the Dior show during Paris Couture Fashion Week is Lupita Nyong’o wearing a summery short red frock. Excellent sunglasses choice adds an extra pop.

Carice Van Houten and Kees van Nieuwkerk at SchiaparelliSwitching out her signature Game of Thrones costume color is Carice van Houten at the Schiaparelli Show with director/partner Kees van Nieuwkerk. Somehow van Houten is getting away with wearing all that matching pink without it becoming sickly sweet or too matchy matchy; as far as I can tell she avoided all Jon Snow related questions at this Paris Couture Fashion Week show showing just how magical she truly is.

Kit HaringtonSpeaking of which and here is your SPOILER WARNING as when Kit Harington attended Wimbledon at the end of last week it set the internet on fire because he clearly has not had the haircut which was suggested after the Game of Thrones season 5 finale. Vanity Fair’s Jo Robinson has been on #KitHaringtonHairWatch pretty much straight out the gate and he’s clearly not got rid of his Jon Snow curls just yet.

Yes he could be holding onto them as a way of not letting go, but it is more likely due to his lack of wig clause in his contract (Natalie Dormer’s comment on this still makes me laugh). And rather than being a hiatus beard as you see a lot of actors growing this is a Jon Snow amount of facial hair. Regardless of the levels of hair chat that rivals Keri Russell in the fall of 1999, Harington does scrub up well for Wimbledon.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

3 Jul

Another relatively quiet week on the “Out of the Box” front, but fear not as there are still plenty of great looks from premieres, fashion campaigns and editorials to marvel over (plus red carpet action from the BET Awards here if you missed that).

Emilia ClarkeEmilia Clarke’s wearing a whole lot of dress in Rosie Assoulin doubling as an optical illusion and showing as Lizzy Caplan did last week how to serve up black and white as a summer look. The dash of pink lipstick adds to the fresh warm weather styling. Clarke shares a behind the scenes look at the perils of wearing a big dress.

Jada Pinkett SmithAt the European premiere of Magic Mike XXL in London, Jada Pinkett Smith is showing how to work a smoking hot LBD in shimmery Balmain. Paired with killer Giuseppe Zanotti sandals and this is how to make an impact on the red carpet.

Jenna Dewan TatumGoing in a completely different direction at the same premiere is Jenna Dewan-Tatum in a white Zuhair Murad jumpsuit. The black belting and embellishments make it pop and there are some all important pockets going on. Love the bold red lip color and this is one super chic ensemble.

Parker PoseyI adore Parker Posey and so I pretty much clapped my hands with glee at this profile in the Style section of The New York Times. Coveting this outfit and hoping this venture gets off the ground – “For starters, she and the choreographer Jack Ferver are working on a project based on “Slow TV,” the Norwegian phenomenon in which viewers watch, say, 12 hours of knitting. “I talked to Mary-Louise Parker, and she knits,” Ms. Posey said. Another idea is “working in an Urban Outfitters and having a séance and getting the Blair Witch Project guy to film it.” So here for all this.

The strong 90s influence continues and Winona Ryder has been named as one of the faces of star packed Marc Jacobs’ Fall 2015 campaign (others include Sofia Coppola, Anthony Kiedis, Cher, Willow Smith and Debi Mazar). Such a striking image and not the first time Ryder has appeared for Marc Jacobs. Messy hair borders on cat ears and that expression is everything. To be filed under ads I am excited to see in fashion magazines for months to come.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

Considering it is summer there is a whole lot of grey going on in this week’s relatively quiet “Out of the Box.” Not to say there aren’t some stunning looks, but there’s not a whole lot of events going on right now. Colorful bold prints including all the florals has been a big trend of late and while pattern is still on display, the tones are slightly darker and still just as striking. Plus an incredible magazine cover and a fashion campaign to make you swoon.

Taraji P Henson WSuper sexy henleys are not just for the guys on The CW and Taraji P. Henson is serving up super hot vibes in J Brand jeans and a short sleeve Theory henley (by pure coincidence as I write this I am wearing a very similar top – mine is Uniqlo – and that is where our similarity ends). This cover is stunning as are the rest of the Diane Ross inspired photos. Bonus shot and I don’t think I need to explain why.

Taraji P Henson W shoot

Speaking about why her Empire character has been a huge hit with audiences Henson explains “They see her heart. They see her intentions. And they love her style—her style is 17 years behind the fashion curve, which makes the clothes a character on the show. As Cookie grows, you’ll see her fashion grow. And people love that—she’s a work in progress. The only thing that never changes is her spirit: To me, Cookie is living, breathing, walking truth.”

Matt BomerOh, hello. Matt Bomer in the new Armani campaign and Channing Tatum accurately describes what it is like to look in Matt Bomer’s eyes on his Reddit AMA “no matter if you’re a man, woman, cat, hamster, you will get lost in matt bomer’s eyes. I don’t know what they are made of outside of dreams and rainbows and amazingness but it truly doesn’t matter. And when he sings. It’s like god gave with both hands and then grew a third hand and graced him with more. he’s crazy talented.”

Lizzy CaplanLizzy Caplan’s appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! was brilliant for a number of reasons including schooling both Jimmy and Jon Hamm on her greatness and also because this Lela Rose black and white gingham dress is everything. On the show Caplan wore black pumps and yet I am leaning in favor of the super comfortable sandals, because my feet are attuned to picking comfy cool. Gingham has been big on the runway this year and Caplan is delivering the ideal version of this look.

Kiernan Shipka CoachAt the 5th annual Coach and Friends of the High Line Summer Party Kiernan Shipka is decked out head to toe in well, Coach including a patterned bandana. This shouldn’t work with the patchwork nature of the frock and it might be Shipka fashion blindness but she is working all these pieces and looks charming in the process. The chunky ‘Harla’ wedges with the flash of red nail color gives this fall collection ensemble a much needed dose of summer.

Photo calls in a dramatic looking location at the Monte Carlo TV Festival open this week’s “Out of the Box.” Plus various other events delivering summer sartorial highs.

Taraji P HensonTaraji P. Henson is working the sitting down couch pose with aplomb in Monte Carlo wearing a black and red striped RVN dress paired with glamorous shades and Stuart Weitzman strappy sandals.
Ming-Na WenA stunning view from the Monte Carlo TV Festival and a super cute gold frock for Ming-Na Wen in an ideal day time photo call outfit.

Zendaya Colemand and Shay MitchellShirt dresses are a wardrobe staple and Zendaya Coleman’s monochrome L’Agence version looks both comfy and stylish (my ideal combination) at the Children Mending Heart’s 2015 Empathy Rocks Fundraiser in the very sunny Malibu. Shay Mitchell’s white jumpsuit is maybe a tad on the super floaty side, but she still looks 70s cool in this ensemble.

Ashley MadekweA better take on the all white outfit comes courtesy of Ashley Madekwe in this effortlessly chic Max Mara number at the Max Mara 2015 Women In Film Face Of The Future Event. Red lipstick bonus points ahoy.

Michael B JordanReason number 1 to be excited about the Fantastic Four press tour is Michael B. Jordan knows how to wear not your average red carpet suit.

Emilia ClarkeA whimsical Dolce & Gabbana delight from Emilia Clarke who is all smiles despite being on crutches earlier in the day and still managing a pair of strappy heels for the occasion. Getting a strong hint of ‘smile through the pain’ face.

Lena DunhamIn a way I wish Lena Dunham had saved this Mary Katrantzou gown for the Emmys rather than the cover of The Hollywood Reporter because it is just that good.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

12 Jun

Premieres, pre-gaming the Emmys and the first official onset photo from the revival I have already been endlessly talking about are all part of this week’s edition of “Out of the Box.”

Anna Faris and Chris PrattInstant cheering for Anna Faris in an amazing metallic long sleeve mini Rubin Singer dress and it contrasts well with husband Chris Pratt’s blue suit and check shirt combo. They really are the most adorable at the Jurassic World premiere.

Lauren LapkusA close runner up in the adorable stakes is former Orange is the New Black correctional officer Lauren Lapkus and she looks delightful in a super chic LUBLU Kira Plastinina. At first glance the shoes look a little matchy matchy until spotting the iridescent nature of the Andrew Gn pumps. OITNB is back today (!) but sadly I don’t think we will be seeing Fischer (if her IMDb page is anything to go by).

Uzo AdubaIt’s hard knowing all of OITNB season 3 is available to watch and not having seen a single one yet (this will be a different story in a couple of hours hopefully), but Uzo Aduba is soothing those woes in a color blocking delight at last night’s ‘Orangecon’ fan event.

Samira WileyAnd Samira Wiley also looks really lovely by doing the summer dress thing.

Naomie HarrisPeter Pilotto can be hard to pull off as there tends to be a lot going on, but Naomie Harris does just this while attending the UK Entourage premiere (I had avoided acknowledging this movie until now) reminding me there is a new Bond press tour which Harris will be part of in the fall. Cue much anticipation.

Ilana glazerA couple of months ago Variety gathered a whole host of actors from comedy and drama to discuss the roles they play in the ‘Variety Emmy Studio.’ Now the videos are being slowly rolled out and with that come the official portraits. I really love this shot of Broad City’s Ilana Glazer which reads like an amused “what?!” statement with excellent eyebrow and statement jewelry game.

Keri RussellA soul piercing look from Keri Russell and a quote focusing on how Elizabeth dresses on The Americans versus her own style “I wear these silk shirts and high-heeled boots and I feel like that armor has become very much a part of that character to me. I feel very panther-like. It’s much more grown-up than I look in real life. I like the way it makes me feel. It’s much tougher and cooler than I am, than Keri actually is.” For more from the Drama Actors including co-star Matthew Rhys head here.

Gina Rodriguez

Nailing what makes Jane the Virgin so special is Gina Rodriguez who also happens to be rocking the shit out of this cute pose/dress “I feel so lucky that in a scene, the way (Jennie Snyder Urman) writes, I can go from comedy to drama within literally a minute and a half. And it’s so freeing, and I get to stretch my wings and practice and live in my craft and fly.” My tears that flow coupled with all the laughter while watching pretty much episode is a sign this is working.

The X-Files first lookI don’t know if I was more excited by this first shot on set as tweeted by the official X-Files account, the pap photos of Mulder and Scully together again or when I found out that Hannibal costume designer Christopher Hargadon is also working on this X-Files revival. There’s been a lot of excellent moments for an X-Files fan this week even if January seems so far away.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

5 Jun

Despite how much print has been in decline in recent years magazine covers still possess the power to make a huge impact and the July issue of Vanity Fair demonstrates just how important old media still is (while being unveiled on social media). This has also been an awards show filled week with the Peabody and Glamour Women of the Year celebrations taking place. Plus all your polo watching sartorial needs are covered.

Caitlyn JennerHi Caitlyn, it is so good to meet you! This is a stunning cover for many reasons and while plenty has been said about how amazing Caitlyn Jenner looks all glammed up it is also important to remember this is about far more than just external beauty. Laverne Cox addresses this on her Tumblr and it is essential reading.

EssenceSpeaking of Laverne Cox here is she is with some of her Orange is the New Black co-stars (just one week until new episodes!) on the cover of Essence all dressed in the color of their show. What’s great about this cover is the number of women featured (Danielle Brooks, Samira Wiley, Adrienne C. Moore, Laverne Cox, Uzo Aduba, Vicky Jeudy) and that it is celebrating ‘sexy at every size’ styling each women in a dress for their figure. Body positive feelings happiness.

Amy Schumer and Tina FeyMoving on from magazines to awards with Amy Schumer receiving a Peabody for Inside Amy Schumer from Tina Fey (on stage there was smooching) with both ladies opting for black. Schumer’s LBD is tuxedo inspired which automatically gets all the points from me.

Kerry WashingtonThe UK Glamour Women of the Year Awards look like a whole lot of fun if the Instagram shots are anything to go by and this is reflected in the red carpet attire with Kerry Washington going for 70s disco infused tube top and glitzy David Koma skirt. Now I want to go out dancing.

Gillian AndersonI don’t know if I would love this on anyone but Gillian Anderson and a tulle cape is so playful and so dramatic that I can’t not smile. Extra giddiness comes from the return of Hannibal last night and all the incredible Bedelia costuming.

Emma WillisSimple chic from Emma Willis and she never disappoints on the red carpet. While it isn’t quite Roksanda levels of stunning as last year’s the blue neck detail and texture elevates it.

Diane Kruger and Joshua JacksonTV Ate My Wardrobe’s official Best Dressed Couple crown wearers continue to please in every single way with Diane Kruger’s magical fashion unicorn status remaining intact in vintage Roland Mouret at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. Joshua Jackson’s grey suit is impeccable and there are no words to describe how he is looking at her.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, Ruth Wilson, Emma RobertsCulottes are a returning trend that has me invoking a loud WHY?! but Ruth Wilson is making me consider them as a fashion choice because she manages to look pretty damn cool while watching polo last weekend. Basically this event includes actresses wearing clothes I might normally be dismissive of that on this occasion look super cool. Maggie Gyllenhaal is working a pink suit with a white crop top with a pair of highly covetable sunglasses. And Emma Roberts’ yellow dress is something I would like in any sun soaked setting. Cute leopard print bag too.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

29 May

A relatively quiet week for “Out of the Box” but there are still plenty of treats in store including another Sarah Michelle Gellar reunion moment, magazine covers, pre-Emmy nominations events and how to brighten up the red carpet if you’re a dude.

IMG_1659Orange is the New Black returns in just two weeks (and then we will have the dilemma of  how quick to watch it) and Bust continues its excellent cover run with Laverne Cox looking super cute in a very summery gingham halter top and high waisted shorts.

Ellie KemperEmmy roundtable season is here and The Hollywood Reporter kicked off the acting side of things with funny ladies talking about a whole range of issues in smart and interesting ways. Ellie Kemper’s tiered skirt (or an extreme twist on peplum) with the turquoise underlining is the standout in this collection of bold dresses and I love what she says about Kimmy’s style during this conversation “I think that [Kimmy] came from this horrible, unspeakable experience, and she is tough like a young girl might be tough. She is all pinks and candy and yellows but still very powerful.”

IMG_0680Now this is how you do a “For Your Consideration” ad with bonus lady suit points (those leather sleeves!).

Viola DavisAt a screening for How to Get Away with Murder, Viola Davis does casual chic in an all black ensemble save for some sparkly sneakers. Heels versus flats have been a big talking point since Cannes and while I’m not sure these kinds of flats would work on a big red carpet event, they look really great in this setting.

Cruel IntentionsThanks to a surprise reunion at a performance of The Unauthorized Musical Parody of Cruel Intentions this post has been written with the Cruel Intentions soundtrack as the musical accompaniment (sorry neighbors for my attempts to sing-along to Skunk Anansie) and it has made me so happy for so many reasons. I think Sarah Michelle Gellar is fully on board with the 90s nostalgia kick. Next up recreating one of these WB ads.

Colton HaynesColton Haynes switches out this signature red for pink at the San Andreas premiere demonstrating that suits don’t just come in three colors.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

22 May

The TV season might be coming to an end as many shows have aired their finales over the last few weeks, but there are plenty of red carpet events and screenings as Emmy chatter is only just beginning. One of the major events this week was of course the end of Mad Men (and you can read all my tear stained thoughts here) and another chance for the cast to show off their sartorial prowess. While we have already documented Mindy Kaling’s Cannes fashion parade there are a few more pretty frocks to show off.

Kiernan ShipkaKiernan Shipka has been a revelation in her performance as Sally Draper and I really can’t wait to see what she does next. She has also consistently been the best dressed cast member and she’s still only 15. Please Hollywood, treat her kindly. At the Film Independent screening of Mad Men she wore a very cute Valentino white ruffled frock which complements both her age and look.

Elisabeth MossAs with Peggy Olson, Elisabeth Moss has really upped her style game over the last few years and this is a simple and fun outfit. The metallic belting is an edgy touch and I love the splash of color with the orange peep-toe pumps, even if they don’t entirely go with the rest of the ensemble.

Amy PoehlerBack to Cannes and the Inside Out premiere with another metallic belted beauty; Amy Poehler sticks with Stella McCartney and it pays off.

Melanie LaurentThe Cannes red carpet photos have a habit of looking both overwhelming and incredibly romantic in a classic movie star way. This shot of Melanie Laurent falls in the latter camp and her super sparkly Zuhair Murad Couture beaded frock is adding to this effect.

Diane KrugerAnother Cannes stunner and TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite; Diane Kruger has gone for an ethereal Prada frock for the Maryland premiere. Here she is with co-star Matthias Schoenaerts who, in not shocking news scrubs up well for the red carpet (everyone should go see Far From the Madding Crowd which is very good for reasons that also include Schoenaerts).

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter SarsgaardMaggie Gyllenhaal is deservedly once again receiving praise and accolades for her portrayal of Nessa Stein in last year’s exceptional mini-series The Honourable Woman including at this week’s 40th Annual Gracie Awards. Wearing a super chic black Alexander McQueen gown with killer cuff detail and red lipstick to swoon over Gyllenhaal poses with husband Peter Sarsgaard.

This has been a week where actresses have been confirming how awful Hollywood can be with Gyllenhaal’s comments about how she is too old at 37 to play a love interest for a 55-year-old – Amy Schumer’s ‘Last Fuckable Day‘ sketch is far too real –  and Salma Hayek spoke at length about the many obstacles she has faced in this industry.

Chelsea PerettiIt’s not just Chelsea Peretti’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine character Gina that gets all the style love from us here and at the Webby Awards where Peretti won Outstanding Comedic Performance (for the Netflix special Chelsea Peretti: One of the Greats) she wore a super hypnotic all the stripes Mason by Michelle Mason frock.

Rose ByrneKeeping things casual cool on the Red Nose Day red carpet is Rose Byrne. Those pants look like they could be satin and yet somehow she is making them work.

Kerry WashingtonAt the Disney International Upfronts Kerry Washington also goes for a relaxed funky outfit and what appears to be a sweater and skirt is actually an Alexander Lewis dress. The green shimmer from her Le Silla shoes goes wonders with the metallic stripes.

OITNBThis Orange is the New Black group photo at a For Your Consideration screening and Q & A this week is delightful for several reasons including 1) Jenji Kohan’s dress, 2) so many good outfits/range of styles and 3) as a reminder that the new season is less than a month away.
