Out of the Box: Look of the Week

8 Jul

A relatively quiet week on the red carpet front what with the holiday weekend (for candids check out “Behind the Insta-Scenes“), but we’ve still got plenty of sartorial treats from sportswear at Wimbledon, what to wear while watching tennis, patterns and another Interview Magazine editorial to salivate over.
img_3847Nike produced a boho floaty dress, which would be great for the beach or Coachella. Less great for playing tennis in. Good job, guys. Serena Williams escaped this calamity and opted instead for a look that is both stylish and practical with a very sporty top and a pleated skirt; mixing contemporary with traditional. If only the pleated skirts we wore for games at high school looked this good.img_3848Giving great style both in victory and in motion with this ballerina like shot. Serena Williams is incredible on every level.img_3846This is from week 1 of Wimbledon, but I somehow missed Kim Sears wearing a fantastic floral Kate Spade dress that featured in NYFW Fantasy Costuming last year. A departure from the first time Kim Sears graced these pages wearing the best sweater responding to a swearing ‘controversy’ at the Australian Open.img_3840Sophie Turner goes for simple chic on Day 10 of Wimbledon in a white shirt and pencil skirt.
img_3837Keeping on the Game of Thrones track with Maisie Williams at the Serpentine Summer Party killing it in a variety of green patterned pieces fit for Emerald City; a floral Milly frock and matching Louboutin shoes and clutch. I’m not crazy about the choker because of my general choker feelings, but it works with this look and Williams’ general 90s loving vibe.img_3841Janelle Monáe does a very different and incredible looking ladysuit in Giuseppe Zanotti at the Queen Sugar screening in New Orleans. It can be hard to make hats work, but every single thing about the styling from H to T (oh hey Tyra) is cool as fuck.  img_3842Interview Magazine has been very good to us recently and we’re going to end this week with some much needed Idris Elba. The photos include a variety of styling from suits to shirts to vests with the above being my favorite from the set. In the interview with Jon Favreau, Elba discusses a number of things include his desire to direct, recent projects and his TV background:

“Television is where I cut my teeth. One of my first jobs was in a soap opera, five days a week. And what I found is, although there are different directors coming in and different crews, you just lived in your character. It’s the nature of the story, the ongoing story, and it can get deeper and deeper.”

It is well worth reading the whole thing.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

10 Jul

Before the domination of Comic-Con panel and party pictures we’ve got a mix of magazine editorials, fashion week styling and a hair conspiracy that could eclipse Felicity.

Gillian Anderson WMesmerized by this stunning shot of Gillian Anderson from W Magazine’s Pop Issue and we are so lucky to have this much Anderson on TV right now. From her current role as Bedelia on Hannibal to the forthcoming final season of The Fall AND the all important/super exciting X-Files revival. The latter unleashed its first bit of new footage this week and even though it was only a couple of seconds long the sight of Mulder and Scully with their guns and flashlights drawn full on made me yelp with joy.

Mindy KalingMindy Kaling looking fierce as fuck also from the Pop Issue of W Magazine as she looks ready to steal your heart and a 1930s gangster’s mind. That or she is rivaling everything Blake Lively from the New Year’s scenes in Age of Adaline (a movie I somehow liked enough to see twice).

Kate MaraCovering this month’s issue of Flare is Kate Mara and they have styled her in whole array of dreamy and romantic outfits including this stunning Preen by Thornton Bregazzi top. It’s all very delicate, lovely and on occasion over the top, which is delightful as is her choppy auburn bob.

LupitaShowing how to simple and effective chic at the Dior show during Paris Couture Fashion Week is Lupita Nyong’o wearing a summery short red frock. Excellent sunglasses choice adds an extra pop.

Carice Van Houten and Kees van Nieuwkerk at SchiaparelliSwitching out her signature Game of Thrones costume color is Carice van Houten at the Schiaparelli Show with director/partner Kees van Nieuwkerk. Somehow van Houten is getting away with wearing all that matching pink without it becoming sickly sweet or too matchy matchy; as far as I can tell she avoided all Jon Snow related questions at this Paris Couture Fashion Week show showing just how magical she truly is.

Kit HaringtonSpeaking of which and here is your SPOILER WARNING as when Kit Harington attended Wimbledon at the end of last week it set the internet on fire because he clearly has not had the haircut which was suggested after the Game of Thrones season 5 finale. Vanity Fair’s Jo Robinson has been on #KitHaringtonHairWatch pretty much straight out the gate and he’s clearly not got rid of his Jon Snow curls just yet.

Yes he could be holding onto them as a way of not letting go, but it is more likely due to his lack of wig clause in his contract (Natalie Dormer’s comment on this still makes me laugh). And rather than being a hiatus beard as you see a lot of actors growing this is a Jon Snow amount of facial hair. Regardless of the levels of hair chat that rivals Keri Russell in the fall of 1999, Harington does scrub up well for Wimbledon.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

5 Jul

The weather is heating up and so this edition of “Look of the Week” is a special summer dress and thanks to the all Mad Men affair last week this will feature some red carpet appearances from the past two weeks. This is a quieter period for TV watching (though some shows like Dexter and Ray Donovan premiered on Sunday) and so this is the first time there are no entries from shows, just red carpet and public appearances.

Winner: Allison Williams at the Nantucket Film Festival

This red and pink patterned printed dress that Girls star Allison Williams wore to the Nantucket Film Festival would work for either daytime or evening affairs and could easily be dressed up or down. Here at TV Ate My Wardrobe we love patterns and this dress mixes four different types that flatter rather than overwhelm. I’m not a huge fan of nude pumps, but I can understand why Williams has chosen a simple pair of shows with a dress like this. Accessorizing with thin gold bangles is also a smart choice and adds detail without cluttering this look.

Runner Up: Allison Janney at The Way, Way Back Premiere

Allison Janney

There are several reasons why I’m looking forward to seeing The Way, Way Back and one of them is Allison Janney who is excellent in everything she does (ok I’m ignoring THAT episode of Lost, but hey that mess wasn’t her fault). Janney has been killing it on the red carpet while promoting this film and this floral dress is super cute; the belt detail and yellow clutch are perfect. As with Allison Williams’ I’m not a big fan of the nude shoes, but they go fine with a dress that is this embellished.

Runner Up: Michelle Dockery at Wimbledon

Michelle Docekry Wimbledon

Michelle Dockery is at Wimbledon; a tournament which is well known for rain so this is summery while also looking prepared for the inevitable downpour. The pale pink shirtdress and navy coat complement each other and the brown flats make this daytime appropriate. As with all of the outfits that are featured this week, it’s a look that could be dressed up or down. The Downton Abbey star gets bonus points for the yellow bag that we can see the strap of, simply because yellow bags are a weakness of mine (especially in the summertime). This is a simple and elegant outfit that is well suited for the venue.

Runner Up: AnnaSophia Robb at The Way, Way Back Premiere

AnnaSophia Robb Way Way Back

The cast of The Way, Way Back is rocking flower power and AnnaSophia Robb’s Red by Valentino has a twist as the floral print is layered underneath black polka dots. Robb is living up to her Carrie Diaries role and is often one of the best dressed on the red carpet and the only thing that doesn’t quite work with this look is the clunky looking black strappy heels. They’re not terrible, they’re just terrible for this dress and something less severe would make this the perfect look.
