First Look at Shonda Rhimes on The Mindy Project

9 Sep

Last week it was Chris Messina in a tux and now Mindy Kaling is sharing a sneak peek on Instagram of Shonda Rhimes on the set of The Mindy Project. It was announced last month that the Scandal/Grey’s Anatomy creator would be making a cameo as herself in a season 3 episode and photo speculation suggests it will involve a trip to Dartmouth. Rhimes not only went to Dartmouth, but also gave the commencement day speech back in June and Mindy Kaling also went to this school (Kaling also got in on the speech action this summer at Harvard).

Pete played by Adam Pally on The Mindy Project also went to this school and he is in this photo along with fellow Dartmouth apparel wearing Ed Weeks (Jeremy) and Ike Barinholtz breaks the trend in an excellent Beastie Boys tee (quite possibly not in costume and on set in a writing capacity). There’s no sign of Kaling and if her character misses out on the opportunity to ask those all important Olivia Pope questions – how does she keep her lounge wear free from red wine stains and popcorn grease? – Mindy Lahiri is going to kick herself.

And because he’s not in the shot above here is some Chris Messina related adorableness from Kaling’s Instagram (like I said before it is the gift that keeps on giving):

The Mindy Project returns in one week (Tuesday, September 16) and for more Mindy Project related stories check out Fantasy Costuming and the Season 3 artwork.

The Mindy Project Season 3 Behind the Scenes Photos: Chris Messina in a Tux

3 Sep

It’s worth repeating that if you are a fan of The Mindy Project you really should be following Mindy Kaling on Instagram as not only do you get a preview of the super cute costumes she will be wearing when season 3 returns in a couple of weeks (Tuesday, September 16), but she also teases future episodes. One such sneak peek comes in the form of two shots Kaling posted from episode 5 (*disclaimer* production order doesn’t always reflect the order they air in) and assumption time suggests they are at a wedding (tuxedos and a photobooth providing those clues).

First up Chris Messina in a tux giving off grumpy looking swoons:

Super sparkly dress with a cute daisy headband (and “dissent in the photobooth”):

While we’re taking a look at Mindy Kaling’s Mindy Project related Instagram shots, here are a couple of outfits I am looking forward to seeing on screen.

Clashing Prints and Bold Color: Fantasy Costuming The Mindy Project

13 Aug

The Mindy Project is a visual treat as costume designer Salvador Perez uses a broad palette; pattern clashing, sparkles, pajamas, colorful outerwear and sparkles are all part of the Mindy Lahiri look and she exudes confidence at home and with her work wear. Mindy doesn’t care if you don’t like it as long as she thinks it is cute. And it usually is. This has been one of the most fun Fantasy Costuming columns to create, scouring the new fall collections to find items we think Mindy Lahiri would wear in all aspects of her life. The brands we have looked at are generally ones she has previously worn on the show and range in price from affordable to splashing out.

As always this is meant to be just a bit of fun and in no way am I saying that these items should feature on any of these shows, rather it is about whether you could see this character wearing this garment and drawing influence from what they have worn in the past.

A&O skirtMindy is a romantic and she doesn’t need a reason to wear hearts, however now that she has got together with Danny after an epic Empire State Building stair climb she has the ideal excuse to wear something like this super flirty Alice + Olivia A-line skirt. Perfect for either work (maybe a polka dot blouse or the starry one below) or date night.

Red ValentinoStar motifs are totally up Mindy’s style street and this silk RED Valentino blouse is another in the dress up or down category.

Trina TurkThe color might be slightly muted, but this Trina Turk ‘Joelle’ dress is classic Mindy work attire as the diamond pattern plus pleat and belting detail are ultra feminine and fun. Pair it with the coat below for a pop of color.

FC CoatNow if there is one item that Mindy has in abundance (and I covet them all) then it’s her outerwear from this incredible canary number (from costume designer Salvador Perez) to colorful plaid and classic houndstoothThe Mindy Project is set in New York so a good coat collection is essential. Step up French Connection and their mosaic blue ‘Imperial’ wool stunner. Coats are my weakness and while I probably don’t need another, this one is crying out.

TopshopAnother mixed print dress and Topshop is a brand Mindy Kaling wore a few months ago at Paleyfest. Here is another jacquard print and the A-line silhouette/short sleeves/high neck combination allows for a raised hemline as office attire (I’m using the either legs or boobs theory). It’s an interesting print that has me asking birds or flowers? It could be both and it’s an exquisite frock.

Kate SpadeMoving on to more casual threads and Mindy has an impressive sweater collection – I am beyond excited that it will be sweater season soon – and Kate Spade is going for bold color and animal print this fall with the ‘Cyber Cheetah‘ in emperor blue. This will look very much at home with Mindy as she relaxes on the couch (with or without Danny).

Tory BurchSeparates aren’t always required to experiment with different patterns as this Tory Burch ‘Ronnie’ pullover demonstrates with floral sleeves and back combined with a mini polka dots front. Mindy is not the type of woman to shy away from a top like this and it’s just the kind of bold/cute statement that makes this character a style inspiration.

Eloise Orange Ring PJsMindy doesn’t just have the fashion thing nailed for her work, going out and casual wardrobe as her pajamas are just as enviable; in fact they even make an appearance on the new season 3 artwork. Adding to the Three J NYC collection that Mindy already has with the ‘Eloise’ orange rings and to borrow a line from Steve Carell in Crazy, Stupid, Love they are the “perfect combination of sexy and cute.”

New Season Artwork for The Mindy Project and New Girl

30 Jul

The Mindy Project and New Girl return on Tuesday, September 16 (for their third and fourth seasons) and both ended in very different places for the central couple; grand romantic gestures and a reconciliation that didn’t happen. The new season artwork reflects both of these things with The Mindy Project focusing on Mindy and Danny, with New Girl maintaining its focus on the entire group of friends.

The Mindy Project S3Photographer Emily Schur has been shooting Mindy Kaling for 10 years and yesterday she released this Mindy Project photo on Instagram/Tumblr. It’s a fun shot focusing on this new relationship and one they are going public with this time (the season premiere title has been slightly altered sadly to “We’re a Couple Now, Haters”). Danny’s super adorable red reading glasses make an appearance and Mindy’s Three J NYC polka dot pajamas are still on our wish list. The Mindy Project is often at its strongest when addressing Mindy and Danny’s complicated friendship and now romance so I am very excited about this forthcoming season.

New Girl S4New Girl had a messy season 3 and I don’t lay the blame solely at the feet of Nick and Jess as a couple; for me this was one of the stronger aspects aside from some of the contrived fights. It did have an impact on the structure of the other relationships and the group dynamic suffered as a result. Returning things to ‘just friends’ could be awkward as part of the tagline suggests; they’re both ‘Idiots’ when it comes to romance (ditto everyone else in the loft). New Girl tried one set up that for one reason or another just didn’t work and now they must rise to the challenge of hitting what was a season 2 sweet spot, but with everything else that has occurred in-between. Damon Wayans Jr. has been made a regular much to my delight and his addition last year was one factor that really worked. The first episode of season 4 is called “The Last Wedding” and will guest star Jessica Biel.

On this poster Zooey Deschanel is wearing a Ted Baker ‘Halina” dress with a blue Kate Spade ‘Pyramid Bow’ belt. Off to go hunt for some super cute electric blue flats.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

25 Jul

The TCA Summer Tour is over and Comic Con is in full flow; this edition of “Out of the Box” features a lot of the former and a hint of the latter.

Diane Kruger TCADiane Kruger is stunning in at The Bridge panel wearing Roksanda; a designer that always brings a pop of color and intrigue (Lizzy Caplan was a highlight in Roksanda last week). The color-blocking of the dress using an array of shapes makes it feel like the dress version of a toddler learning game and it is pretty mesmerizing.  Bold strappy two-tone pink and black Dior sandals add to yet another Kruger standout.

Michelle DockeryMichelle Dockery always brings her A game when promoting Downton Abbey and this Victoria Beckham Fall 2014 ensemble is delightful. Dockery manages to work the classics without falling into cliche “English Rose” territory by keeping things contemporary; the gold chain adds something to the simple navy top while not detracting from the abstract print of the skirt. Cool dark denim heels complete this look.

Mindy Kaling TCAAt the Fox All-Star party Mindy Kaling stands out in a jade green Tadashi Shoji dress and you can always rely on Kaling to wear something that will add a dash of color to proceedings. That or at least some sparkles. The cut is great on her and the minimal accessories/striking lipstick sets it off.

Michaela ConlinAnother super colorful outfit at the Fox All-Star with Bones’ Michaela Conlin pairing an electric blue sleeveless shift dress with a pair of bubblegum pink pumps. Hey, it is a summer party after all.

Caroline DhavernasWhen doing the promotional thing Comic Con is a little different outfit wise as while there is a huge audience, it is a much more casual attire affair and so it can be a tricky one (particularly for woman as dudes turn up in jeans and tees for regular photo calls as opposed to the much more put together female attire, I’ve ranted about this in the past).

Caroline Dhavernas’ Hannibal panel ensemble is cute and the seersucker shirt/patterned skirt has the hint of Alana Bloom if Alana was on vacation and drinking a cocktail. I also have worn the reverse of this outfit recently. While some information was revealed about Hannibal’s third season, there was no word as to what role (if any) Dhavernas will play. I’m hoping her presence at SDCC is a hint that she will be back.

Blake Lively, Preserve and the TV Character Lifestyle Site Wishlist

15 Jul

Blake Lively’s lifestyle site Preserve is launching soon (rumored to be July 23) and other than having a name that conjures up images of jam or something to be looked at and not touched, it promises to “focus on artisans and products, many hand-made one-of-a-kind items all selected by Blake. Items will be available for purchase through the site. Preserve is all about story-telling through video. Blake will be in some of these videos.”

Serena GG bloggingNow as someone who subscribes to the Goop newsletter (who doesn’t want a Hamptons summer update in their inbox?!) one ridiculous and extravagant lifestyle blog from an actress is probably enough. Blake disagrees and told UK Vogue last year that “the main element of it is that it’s about storytelling and it’s about living a very one-of-a-kind, curated life, and how to achieve that. There’s nothing like it out there – it’s without a genre.” Ah, it’s “without genre” other than being a lifestyle blog, which I *think* is already a genre. Flashbacks to Serena’s blogging storyline on Gossip Girl is not helping and for some reason I’m contemplating a Gossip Girl rewatch. Send help.

I wonder if Blake will go the way of Goop offering aspirational and mostly unobtainable (for the average consumer) items and vacation suggestions or will she shock us with more affordable pieces. The phrase “one-of-a-kind, curated life” highly suggests the former. So while this doesn’t sound all that original, it has inspired this list of which TV characters I would like to see with their own lifestyle websites. Even if computers don’t exist in their world, parchment also works.

Broad CityAbbi and Ilana, Broad City: From their incredible style, money making schemes, phone finding solutions, dating antics, city travel alternatives and general lady friendship awesomeness I would definitely want a weekly newsletter from this duo.

Sally DraperSally Draper, Mad Men: Surviving boarding school, philandering/judgmental parents and pointers on late 60s teen fashion is what I would expect from this blog. And snark. So much snark and it would be glorious.

MindyMindy Lahiri, The Mindy Project: Dating advice, rom-com New York City tour spots and an endless supply of bright and bold clothing suggestions. Oh and a gym plan that involves celebrity saving scenarios. Mindy Kaling did have a lifestyle blog that she started in 2006 called “Things I’ve Bought That I Love” and it isn’t just crazy expensive items.

Olivia Pope white trenchOlivia Pope, ScandalTeach me how to wear white and not spill red wine down it and how to one might rock a white hat (metaphorical and literal) and still look stylish. Also includes sections on how to handle difficult parents and complicated relationships. And recipes for jam and Vermont vacation locations.

CerseiCersei Lannister, Game of Thrones: How to survive a patriarchal society, manipulation skills, insults to use while drinking copious amounts of wine and intricate braid hairstyle solutions. Also tips on how to accentuate any gown with some armor. Dating advice should be ignored.

Hannibal 2.02 H kill suitDr. Hannibal Lecter, Hannibal: How to look exquisite no matter what the activity with a whole host of fashion advice like “How to wear a three-piece suit while partaking in your favorite hobby.” There is also a cooking section, but you might want to change the ingredients. Take special care to read the etiquette section as rudeness will not be tolerated.

Which TV character would you take lifestyle advice from?

And the First Episode of The Mindy Project Season 3 is Called…

3 Jul

First up a disclaimer as episode titles do sometimes change between pre-production and their air date. With that in mind, I hope this one doesn’t get altered* as it is pretty emphatic in regards to a certain relationship status. Mindy Kaling has posted the script title page on Instagram and it is as follows:

http://instagram.com/p/p-I7lpJQyA/?modal=true

Suggesting “We’re a Couple Now, Bitches” is referring to Mindy and Danny isn’t a wild guess and it looks like they are ready to take the next big step after their last stalled attempt.

I’m really excited to see how The Mindy Project tackles the “What next?” that rom-com movies tend to escape as the end credits hit at this point. Mindy in a long term relationship is not a new prospect as she’s had a couple of serious relationships on the show, however it is an entirely different setup to her previous beaus as Mindy and Danny have been the central “will they/won’t they” on The Mindy Project. This also means I’ll get to write a whole lot more about some of my favorite sitcom tropes/story arcs and Mindy Kaling has experience with writing a beloved couple going from friends to something more thanks to her time on The Office.

*I spoke too soon as this episode title has indeed been altered to “We’re a Couple Now, Haters” with Mindy Kaling explaining ” It was changed to “haters” because people could be offended by “bitches”. Thus is life.” Le sigh.

Best of the Fox 2014 Upfront Red Carpet

13 May

Upfronts week is here and this means an onslaught of promos as each network has new shows for us to fall in love with, break our hearts, covet costuming and snark about. Stars from both current and the forthcoming roster attend this presentation and the red carpet style can vary greatly from those who are already sporting their hiatus beards to the more eager to show off first timers.

Upfront fashion has a spring in its step as the colors are brighter and the hemlines are shorter and here are our highlights from Fox.

Nicole Beharie Tom MisonIt is so good to see Sleepy Hollow’s Nicole Beharie and Tom Mison together again; Beharie’s gone for a super sexy look in a Haute Hippie top and Dominic Louis skirt. Tom Mison looks dapper and casual as his trousers skim on the skinny side; he also thought it would be a good idea to crash the Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast photo. This is no hiatus beard as Sleepy Hollow has just started shooting its second season and we will be getting a 5 episode bump this year going from 13 to 18.

Hannah SimoneHannah Simone’s Dolce & Gabbana floral dress is on the more demure end of the scale and the only downside are her shoes which are a bit of a snooze.

Xosha RoquemoreThe Mindy Project’s Xosha Roquemore is wearing vintage Moschino Cheap & Chic and I love the cobalt blue of the dress and strappy shoes – on this occasion the matchiness works – with the bold leaf pattern of the shirt. Roquemore is showing off the perfect day to night feature fashion magazines as if she took off the shirt it becomes very much an evening outfit. The shirt is great so it should stay.

Zooey DeschanelThere’s a retro edge to the white Vivienne Westwood Red Label frock Zooey Deschanel is wearing. The kitten heels add to this vintage feeling and it’s very much a Zooey Deschanel look. The only thing missing is a bold red lip color to make this outfit truly pop.

Taraji P. HensonThis is a really great color on Taraji P. Henson and she will be starring in Empire (debuting midseason). While I normally have an aversion to nude shoes (see Hannah Simone above) on this occasion and with a dress color this bold I’m really digging this choice of nude patent Mary Jane Louboutin pumps.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

9 May

As there’s been a lot of red carpet goings on this week starting with the WHCD followed by the Met Gala (parts one and two) “Out of the Box” is going for a selection box approach of looks that have caught our eye this week. This includes magazine covers, premieres and one of the many romantic moments from The Mindy Project season finale.

Aubrey PlazaAubrey Plaza attends the LA Palo Alto premiere in a striking Peter Pilotto dress. It’s an edgy take on a spring floral frock and the mix of prints on this silk-blend dress creates a strong visual using bold color and pattern. While it might look a bit like a Magic Eye picture – sadly my eyes weren’t magic as I could never see the boat or whatever it was – it manages to avoid looking like a hypnotic mess. Love the combination of purple, blue and white.

Yvonne StrahovskiAnother bold and colorful choice with Yvonne Strahovski in Emanuel Ungaro at the UK premiere for 24: Live Another Day. This color block creation looks like a fancy bathrobe (in this case not a bad thing) and the contrasting blue panels make quite the impression. It’s been a good week for Strahovski as she also appeared on the new season of Louie and I still need to catch both that and 24. Let the end of season/new shows pile up begin.

NY Mag TV IssueRegular readers will know how much I love TV editions of magazines and this year’s New York magazine cover star is in one TV event that I am highly anticipating – The Normal Heart on HBO – and the most watched sitcom on TV right now. Jim Parsons isn’t who I was necessarily expecting to see on the cover (last year was Michael Douglas, Jessica Paré in 2012) and while I’m not a Big Bang Theory fan, I do really like this cover image. It’s an incredibly bright color combination and as with the Jessica Paré covered issue, yellow is an important part of the design concept. If it came out in January this might be too much sunshine styling to handle, but it’s May and I’m all for color explosion like this.

http://instagram.com/p/npM7E8JQ-_/

The Mindy Project aired its excellent season 2 finale this week and one of the visual highlights was the Danny and Mindy New York tour that paid homage to the Nora Ephron movies that both Mindy Kaling and Mindy Lahiri hold close to their heart. Mindy Kaling’s Instagram account is a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes photos from The Mindy Project including this beautiful sunset shot. It also shows how important it was on this occasion to use real New York rather than a backlot in LA, where it would be impossible to capture a moment like this.

The Mindy Project and the Rom-Com Narrative Part 4

7 May

The first part of The Mindy Project and the rom-com narrative started back in September when the show returned for season 2 and it’s sprawled into a much bigger discussion as this year has progressed. At the time I tried to resist the Mindy/Danny “will they/won’t they” set up that was clearly taking place and while I couldn’t deny their super hot chemistry, a really great platonic male/female friendship on TV is the dream (it’s something I elaborate further on in the Felicity chat later this week). The Peter and Mindy dynamic has been pleasant surprise and this does hold the potential to be just this type of relationship.  After the season 2 premiere I was pretty conflicted about the Danny and Mindy coupling and as the season progressed it became impossible not to jump on board this ship.

The Mindy ProjectFor all of The Mindy Project’s creative stumbles and constant changes, the one aspect that has been stable throughout is the exploration of rom-coms that both Mindy Lahiri the protagonist and Mindy Kaling the creator know so well. The Danny/Mindy relationship is the other constant since the pilot episode and despite my reservations about the romance angle, the plotting this season has been magnificent. After the incredible first kiss, the first obstacle came in the form of keeping the relationship secret and it’s all part of the TV dilemma of “What next?” that the movies Mindy adores don’t have to deal with. The suddenness of the breakup after a long build-up and tonally awkward episodes that followed suggested they might have wasted an opportunity by not sticking the landing. This hasn’t been the case and last week’s rejection by Mindy, followed by the ups and downs of this pairing in the finale show how Kaling has a firm grip on who this character is and what she wants this relationship to be.

Before we get to the “What next?” sequel let’s have a look at where we are right now. Grand romantic gestures are important to Mindy, but she’s not just a day dreamer with unrealistic expectations and it’s why it was important that Danny has to work to win her back after he broke up with her initially. It’s why I’m glad that Mindy rejected his kiss last week after he only showed interest in her when there was another guy on the scene. Danny felt like he was recreating the plane moment and instead he didn’t consider how Mindy would feel about his hot/cold behavior.

In the finale Danny decides to go for another tactic he thinks she will dig and that’s a catfish plan using the “Was it You?” column in the paper posing as Andy (or Dr Greg from Mad Men). It’s a set up straight out of a Nora Ephron movie which is why Danny thinks it’s a winning idea and the Bradley Cooper photo pinned to his mirror so he can recreate the three-piece suit look is maybe the most adorable thing he has done. To stop Mindy from coming up to his apartment and ruining the surprise, Danny lies and says he’s “being intimate with himself” and I would never have predicted that two different comedies would use The Good Wife as part of a masturbating gag this season (the other being Broad City). I guess it can be a pretty sexy show. When Mindy tells Danny that he was right about them not being a couple he gets cold feet and instead of telling Mindy the truth he lets her go to the Empire State Building where he knows she’s going to get stood up and that’s pretty shitty.

The montage and Danny narration as they take in the sites of everywhere Megan Ryan has laugh/cried is the most adorable and it’s something I was anticipating thanks to the preview Kaling gave on her Instagram last month when they were shooting these scenes. This show gets the rom-com moments spot on, including the misunderstandings that almost doom the relationship. When Mindy see fake Andy on the subway and starts yelling at him it is time for Danny to come clean. Danny’s initial email plan has all the marks of a grand romantic gesture, but it’s also based on deceit and while rom-coms have these kinds of moments, Danny has read this situation completely wrong.

Danny not wanting to come clean about their relationship in front of their colleagues was the ultimate slap in the face for Mindy and it’s why she has a hard time buying his “I love you declarations” as they are just words and she can’t trust anything he says “because you love me until you don’t.” This conversation in the bathroom is a heartbreaking repeat of when Mindy called Danny on his “I don’t want to lose my best friend” BS reason for breaking up. It’s teary once again and this is when The Mindy Project feels at its most real; the rom-com is just the palette they work from and they can do emotional honesty just as well. Mindy doesn’t want to fall for this as despite these romantic notions she still has self-worth and she doesn’t want to be made a fool of again.

It all comes back to the earrings that Mindy left behind at Danny’s apartment as the sign that Mindy needs; words can be manipulated but the inclusion of these earrings in Danny’s box of important stuff speaks so much louder. The build up to the Empire State Building climax uses Bruce Springsteen, Danny getting hit by a cab but running on regardless and Mindy having to take the stairs as the lift is briefly out. All the trappings for an excellent ending and as I’ve walked 20 flights of those stairs I know I would definitely be lying on the floor wheezing like Mindy is after climbing all of them. Danny’s “I wanna go all in” is wonderfully misinterpreted by Mindy and their final smooch is adorable even if they’re lying on a probably dirty floor. They just don’t care.
