Out of the Box: Look of the Week

20 Feb

A big pre-Oscar weekend style edition of “Out of the Box” with NYFW runway watching style, Costume Designers Guild Awards, Vanity Fair celebrating Young Hollywood and the Essence Black Women in Hollywood event.

Natasha Lyonne and Nicki MinajNicki Minaj and Natasha Lyonne at the Alexander Wang runway show this week pulling their best front row DGAF faces.

Allison WilliamsAllison Williams’ style leans towards the classic and she looks at home in matching Spring 2015 Michael Kors floral crop top and skirt at the Michael Kors runway show. With the current New York weather I suddenly turn into my mother and get concerned about how cold she must be,

Christina HendricksA super sophisticated look for Christina Hendricks at Zac Posen in Zac Posen. That is an excellent shade of red lipstick and I’m already getting weepy about the end of Mad Men whenever I see one of the cast members.

Alison WrightDitching the 80s frumpy sweaters for something with an air of relaxed cool at the Tracy Reese show is Alison Wright from The Americans and I am particularly eyeing up her necklace. Wright is also demonstrating how you can do cold weather legs and still look fashion ready.

Kiernan ShipkaMoving on to the Costume Designers Guild Award and Kiernan Shipka is a vision in Oscar de la Renta. This lady is incredible. Also *sob* (see earlier Christina Hendricks remark).

Nicole BeharieOf course we know that actresses are not going to mirror the style of the characters they play (see Alison Wright from The Americans), however as I am so used to seeing Nicole Beharie in a range of leather jackets, jeans and boots on Sleepy Hollow this color/pattern Luis Antonio explosion at the Vanity Fair Young Hollywood event is a fun change-up.

Uzo AdubaThe OITNB ladies have been doing the award and party circuit (deservedly so) and I might have the opposite problem when Netflix gifts us with the next season readjusting to seeing them in their prison beige. Uzo Aduba is a picture of sophistication at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon in this pretty floral L.K. Bennett dress and orange Stuart Weitzman heels.

Laverne CoxPleats are a clothing weakness for me and Laverne Cox does understated elegance which is perfect for this daytime Essence event wearing a Whistles skirt with a Theory top.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

13 Feb

New York Fashion Week has just kicked off and will dominate TV Ate My Wardrobe over the next few days; this edition of “Out of the Box” includes a couple of NYFW moments, magazine covers/editorials and other red carpet events.

Elizabeth BanksElizabeth Banks made our Best of 2014 “Out of the Box” list and here she is at the Berlin Film Festival for Love & Mercy in another stunning Elie Saab Couture gown. I cannot wait for the Pitch Perfect 2 promo train.

Tracee Ellis Ross EssenceTracee Ellis Ross looks like she is about to play a killer and super stylish game of tennis on the cover of Essence and I love it.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw Town & CountryTown & Country delivers another beautiful editorial this time for the US edition and featuring Gugu Mbatha-Raw. In addition to these amazing shots Mbatha-Raw gives a good style message to live by “It’s important to know that it’s okay to be your natural self. It’s also okay to dress up and wear makeup and hair extensions if you want, so long as you don’t feel like you need that or will be worthless without it. The point is, it should be a choice.”

Laverne CoxA celeb filled runway at the Go Red for Women event and Laverne Cox works her Donna Karan gown by turning the sheer cape into a twirling sensation.

SJPSuper floaty pink dress, sleeveless check wraparound coat; this is SJP NYFW perfection when unveiling her new shoe collection with Tome this week.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

12 Feb

Behind the Insta-Scenes has guest stars aplenty and hanging out on set (in more ways than just mooching around) from a variety of shows such as Jane the VirginOrphan Black and Broad City.

Bellamy Young captures Scott Foley looking good in a hoodie on the set of Scandal. From the caption I guess we have to assume that sadly there won’t be a Mellie/Jake interaction.

The Mindy Project continues to kill it in the guest star department with Laverne Cox appearing in a later episode as Tamra’s cousin Sheena. I cannot wait.

Gina Rodriguez celebrated her one year anniversary since auditioning for Jane the Virgin with this shot and sweet sentiment. I need those candles in my life.

Yep (although not currently Friday, still wonderful).

Nick Kroll guest starred on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and it is as brilliant as Kroll’s excellent beard.

http://instagram.com/p/y84FKCAVEp/?modal=true

Behind the scenes green screen magic or in this case black and white magic from The Flash’s Grant Gustin.

I also love Gilliam Jacobs’ Clare Vivier bag.

Diane Kruger continues to win Instagram and this time it is not Pacey related.

Helena’s creepy trinkets anyone?

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

12 Dec

Red carpet dress pretty and a new promo poster for one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s most anticipated new shows for 2015 are all part of this week’s “Out of the Box.”

Agent CarterMarvel unveiled the new Agent Carter poster this week and it is a doozy. There are several reasons why I am looking forward to this show and most of these begin with Hayley Atwell accompanied by a dash of “I can’t wait to see the costuming.” Atwell does have the whole 1940s look down (as can be seen in Any Human Heart, Restless and Captain America of course), but her talents go far beyond retro styling and hopefully Agent Carter is going to showcase her many strengths as a performer.

Kiernan ShipkaKiernan Shipka continues her red carpet reign in Mary Katrantzou at the TrevourLIVE LA event. It is a fun, colourful dress and the textured patterned fabric puts a playful twist on this traditional silhouette.

Rose ByrneAnother frock from the Spring 2015 Mary Katrantzou collection – this designer is a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite – and Rose Byrne shines in this dress (and her bob is spectacular) at the Annie premiere; it is why there is no need for accessories and black pumps/tights are the perfect choice to complete this look.

Laverne CoxWhat I’ve learned from Laverne Cox’s “Home for the Holidays” Benefit Concert outfit is my cape love trumps my lack of enthusiasm for sheer and this is a very fun Marc Bouwer dress, which is perfect for this time of year.

Zoe KazanZoe Kazan’s super colorful Novis dress at the Into the Woods premiere doesn’t scream December, but it continues the strong pattern trend this week and makes me feel like I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole. I’m even partial to the chunky buckles on Kazan’s sparkly color block shoes.

Portia de RossiIt is hard to pull off plaid on plaid on plaid and Portia de Rossi is serving up Glen Plaid realness in this Stella McCartney ensemble. The rolled up sleeves, top button done up, black lapels, black accessories and splash of lip color makes it the ideal outfit for a breakfast event as The Hollywood Reporter celebrates Women in Entertainment including Shonda Rhimes.

Emma RobertsThis is a whole lot of pink, but Emma Roberts manages to avoid looking sickly sweet in this Valentino frock. The flared cuffs and floral collar give it a 60s feel and the only thing not working for me is the blah taupe pumps.

Best of the Glamour 2014 Women of the Year Awards Red Carpet

11 Nov

Glamour hosted their annual Women of the Year Awards and the recipients include women from a variety of professions including actors, philanthropists and designers. The red carpet is awash with party dress chic and here are our picks from the night.

Mindy KalingBeaded 1960s inspired decadence from Mindy Kaling and she is wearing a custom-made frock by Mindy Project costume designer Salvador Perez to celebrate being named one of Glamour’s Women of the Year. It is bold, colorful, sparkly and fun; all the aspects that make up Mindy Kaling’s on and off screen style. This is how you go short at an event like this (and Perez and Kaling talk about the design process here).

LupitaMindy is not the only honoree opting for above the knee and Glamour cover star Lupita Nyong’o wears yet another incredible ensemble to add to her year of red carpet highs. Queen Lupita seems more accurate and here she is wearing an embellished Chanel Couture dress paired with Kurt Geiger metallic nude pumps.

Laverne CoxGoing for something slightly longer is another Glamour Woman of the Year and Orange is the New Black’s Laverne Cox has got a velvet train and curls going on. This is a softer look than Cox tends to go for on the red carpet and the electric blue color is incredible on her.

Keri Russell GlamourKeri Russell’s penchant for leather continues and she is serving up 70s rock band realness here with an outfit that wouldn’t look out of place at a Runaways gig. Wearing a leather J. Mendel jumpsuit Russell presented Dr. Sylvia Earle with her award. Earle has spent over 50 years exploring, studying and striving for better understanding/protection of ocean habitats.

Coco RochaOpting for a menswear approach is supermodel Coco Rocha in this simple, but effective almost all black ensemble; adding a touch of glitz with gold toe capped loafers (that I am now coveting).

Amy SchumerMore metallics and Amy Schumer has the end of year (okay it is only November) party style down as this is the perfect time for silver shoes and a strapless dress like this. This is how you do winter florals.

Judith LightOh hey Judith Light! I am pretty much in awe of everything Light does and so I’m totally ignoring the so-so shoes and embracing the Stella from The Fall satin blouse. The design on the skirt is beautiful and this is a whole lot of secretary chic.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

17 Oct

Pretty, patterned and textured (alliteration be damned) frocks ahoy from a variety of premieres, award shows and red carpet events on this edition of “Out of the Box.”

Aubrey PlazaIt’s not just because of the all important pocket factor that makes me head over heels for Aubrey Plaza in Mary Katrantzou; the bold and colorful print is pure Mary Katrantzou magic and Plaza is a sartorial delight. There’s no need for accessories with a dress like this and I’m so happy to see gold sandals rather than nude pumps as the footwear choice.

Kaitlyn DeverKaitlyn Dever was only in one episode of Party Down as Karen’s wannabe actress daughter Escapade, but because she was mentioned so frequently I still automatically think of the company picnic episode whenever I see her. A slight tangent to start with and here is Dever at the New York premiere of Laggies (I can’t wait to see this movie) in a stunning black lace Oscar de la Renta frock and platform Brian Atwood peep-toes. This look is elegant, age appropriate and uses the sheer trend in way that doesn’t have me yelling “Whyyyyyyyyy?” at my screen for once.

Michelle MonaghanDolce & Gabbana have embraced fairy tale fashion in their fall 2014 collection and Michelle Monaghan is working the key motif number like a charm at the 20th Annual Fulfillment Fund Stars Benefit Gala. The floral print contrasts with the black jacquard dress and is a prime example of how to wear florals long after the summer is over.

Kristen SchaalThe runway was awash with gingham last month as Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta and Altuzarra were all working this trend; Kristen Schaal wore this super cute blue and white gingham dress to the Bob’s Burgers PaleyFest panel completing the look with a pair of white Oxfords. Flat shoe high five!

Laverne Cox and Taylor SchillingMTV and Logo are both premiering Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word documentary tonight and last night Cox was joined by her OITNB co-star Taylor Schilling to celebrate this television event. Cox spent the day wearing a variety of purple outfits for Spirit Day (and you can see them all on her Instagram) and she saved the best for last in this beautiful Monique Lhuillier lace gown. Schilling’s multicolored floral button down has a splash of purple and I wish we could see her shoes (or booties if I had to guess) a little better as it looks like the carpet has merged with her feet. There’s a clash in fancy levels between the two outfits, but as Cox is the one in the spotlight it makes sense that her attire is far dressier.

Kerry Washington AllureKerry Washington does the whole fresh faced look on the cover of Allure and it’s one of her best magazine covers to date (and over the past year there have been many). Wearing what looks like an Olivia Pope wine cardigan this is a far cry from her Scandal character with choppy, tousled and shorter locks plus a whole lot of cleav.

Best of the 2014 Emmy Red Carpet: Black and White Gowns

26 Aug

Welcome to the 2014 Emmy red carpet ‘Best of’ coverage and in a year when bold color was on trend, black and white gowns still made their mark.

Lizzy Caplan Emmys V2Lizzy Caplan in Donna Karan Atelier is the TV Ate My Wardrobe look of the night and this gown is stunning. When Caplan arrived the brief shots on E! were enough to know she was shutting the red carpet down. Then this photo of the back began to circulate on Twitter and it became clear this gown is the stuff that dreams are made of; it didn’t disappoint from any other angle either.

Laverne Cox EmmysIn a custom Marc Bouwer Laverne Cox is the height of elegance and she has a train, which I adore. Perfection on this night from the Orange is the New Black star.

Lean HeadeyLena Headey always comes across super cool and on Emmy night it is no different with Headey in a black Rubin Singer asymmetric ensemble. It’s always a jolt seeing the Game of Thrones cast with their regular hair – Kit Harington changed his up with a man bun – and Headey’s short do is as far removed from Cersei as you can get and I love it.

Anna Chlumsky EmmyAnother white gown winner (although sadly none of the ladies featured here took home their respective prizes) from Anna Chlumsky in Zac Posen. The gold clutch is the ideal glitzy addition to this outfit.

Jessica PareGoing for a slightly different length is Jessica Paré in an exquisitely beaded Lanvin dress. Tulip skirts are hard to pull off as they’re an awkward silhouette; Paré manages to do this with aplomb.

Angela BassettAngela Bassett demonstrating once again that she must have a painting in the attic in a beautiful wrap gown with just the right amount of gold accessories; the belt and cuff detailing ties the whole look together.

Carrie BrownsteinWhile not as fun as Carrie Brownstein’s Emmy dress from last weekend, I salute this Halston Heritage dress that’s giving off fancy sci-fi uniform vibes.

Michelle Monaghan EmmysCombining two of the night’s trends as dramatic leg slits were also prominent is Michelle Monaghan in white Giambattista Valli Couture. Also stunning.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

22 Aug

Emmy weekend is here! Or rather Emmy Monday is a few days away in a slightly different month/day switch (blame football/VMA’s). “Out of the Box” is kicking things off early with an Emmy themed edition and the best looks on display at part one of the 2014 Creative Arts Emmys, which dished out a whole host of awards such as costuming and guest actors. The red carpet featured the Orange is the New Black nominated trio and I’m sure there will be more from this cast next week as the show is nominated along with Taylor Schilling and Kate Mulgrew.

Uzo AdubaUzo Aduba took home the award for Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren on OITNB beating out co-stars Laverne Cox and Natasha Lyonne. Aduba opted for a simple and super chic white Costume National V-neck frock and later accessorized it with a gold statue.

Natasha LyonneMonochrome was big on the Emmy red carpet in 2013 and Natasha Lyonne continues this trend by draping a white blazer over a black Calvin Klein dress. Glitzing the whole look up with vintage Cartier bracelets and a pendant necklace; this is the perfect balance of red carpet nonchalance with sophistication.

Laverne CoxContinuing the OITNB role call and it is Laverne Cox looking stunning in a sparkly strapless midnight-blue Donna Karan gown. Adding extra shimmer with a Marchesa gem-encrusted clutch, plus Neil Lane and Paul Morelli jewelry completes Cox’s red carpet win (sadly all three OITNB ladies couldn’t share the actual award).

Carrie+Brownstein+Arrivals+Creative+Arts+Emmy+0DW1tl6Ie0RlDitching the more traditional longer gown for a short Valentino frock is Portlandia’s Carrie Brownstein (here with co-star Fred Armisen) and I love it. The intricate multicolored feathers and black beading detail elevate this from just being another LBD; pairing it with a Jimmy Choo hot pink ‘Candy’ clutch is the extra pop of color this look needs. This is the dress I would wear if money wasn’t a factor.

Judy GreerEveryone’s favorite rom-com best friend Judy Greer in a Reed Krakoff cocktail dress with an enticing geometric bodice; it is both super flattering and a playful twist on the usual black red carpet attire.

SAG Emmy Series: Conversation with Orange is the New Black’s Laverne Cox

7 Aug

Orange is the New Black is nominated for 12 Emmys with 5 in acting categories including the incredible Laverne Cox (for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series). As part of the Screen Actors Guild Foundation Emmy nominee Conversations series Laverne Cox sat down with Mark Peikert, Executive Editor of Backstage – the series is in partnership with Backstage – to discuss the role/episode she is nominated for and her acting journey.

Laverne CoxThe focus is on training and the acting process which sounds like it could be rather stuffy to someone who isn’t in this industry, but this is far from the case and I think I could listen to Cox talking about her experience for hours. Anyone who visits TV Ate My Wardrobe regularly will know that I love these kinds of discussions (particularly with fascinating women) from Comic-Con panels to Emmy roundtables and one reason I am such a fan of these longer discussions is that you get so much more from the person being showcased than you do in a regular interview. Part of this is because there’s something more informal about these chats so the participants will share more, but as Cox also mentions she has to shorten everything to sound bites for live TV interviews, whereas in this setting she can provide further insight.

This includes not only talking about her background in acting, but also how Orange as the New Black as a cultural phenomenon is helping a wider audience understand more about the transgender community. Cox references the Time cover as the obvious point when she realized she was becoming a spokesperson for this community, but she also mentions the reality show she was on prior to OITNB as well as the Katie Couric interview as a major shift. One aspect of this role that she mentions is how it isn’t a PSA; instead this show has provided an affirming point of reference as Sophia is a “really human, nuanced, complicated chick who people can relate to and happens to be played by someone who is actually trans.”

Cox is currently writing a book (when can I pre-order?) and while her publisher would probably like her to hold back on certain stories she goes into detail of what her first day was like on the set of OITNB (Jodie Foster gave her a tour of the set), the scene that made her realize how incredible and unique OITNB is, which piece of costuming puts her in the right Sophia headspace, her academic background and how dance training helps when performing a scene (and why she chose acting over dance).

It’s a really fun discussion and kicking off this series with Laverne Cox has set the bar high for the other participants.

Orange is the New Black Cast Celebrate Pride in New York, San Francisco and at the White House

1 Jul

The Orange is the New Black cast were out in full force on Sunday with floats at Pride parades in New York City and San Francisco. Laverne Cox was one of three grand marshals (Looking’s Jonathan Groff and Rea Carney were the other two) and she rode alongside Delores Nettles (her daughter Islan Nettles, a transgender woman was beaten to death last year).

Cox also visited the White House yesterday for their Pride reception and Michelle Obama is a big fan of the show as Cox revealed on Instagram “At the White House Pride luncheon earlier today. I met the President and First Lady. She hugged me and is a fan of @oitnb #oitnb #starstruck and #inspired.”

OITNB PrideEscaping from Litchfield and riding the New York float in the incredible sunshine are Dascha Polanco, Danielle Brooks, Samira Wiley, Matt McGorry, Yael Stone and Barbara Rosenblat.
