Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

11 Dec

Welcome once again to Behind the Insta-Scenes! Bringing you a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off) antics.

We’ve got an array of onset photos this week including a look at a future episode, which also happens to be flashing back to the past, award nomination celebrations, the final days shooting one show and creepy Santa.

Oh hey Michiel Huisman and your beardy goodness! Hanging out with Orphan Black creators John Fawcett and Graeme Manson in what looks to be Felix’s apartment.

Lee Pace is guest starring on The Mindy Project this season as an important person from her past and having watched the Christmas episode it now makes sense why they were shooting in San Francisco a few weeks ago.

Mindy Kaling also posted a few photos of what Mindy looked like in 2004 – bangs and blue contact lenses – when she first knew Alex. The caption explains it all.

New Girl went for a different kind of Santa this year for their super fun festive episode and I’m not sure I will ever be able to look at Saved by the Bell’s Mr Belding in the same way again.

It was SAG nomination day yesterday and the cast of Veep have a lot of SAG years between them. This also works as a reminder that I still need to catch up on this show.

With this coffee truck for the Community cast and crew, Gillian Jacobs agrees with Nathan Fillion’s sign.

The last Wine Wednesday on the Cougar Town set is an emotional one.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

5 Dec

Award shows and end of year celebrations are upon us which means fancy frocks aplenty. This week’s “Out of the Box” also includes a magazine editorial with someone who is making the style round up for an immense fourth week in a row.

Amy RyanAmy Ryan looks delightful at the Gotham Awards doing the black and winter florals thing with aplomb. Major red lipstick points and her shoes are fantastic.

Jenny SlateAsymmetric peplum is not the easiest of looks to work, but Jenny Slate is killing it in this Roksanda skirt and top. Black nail polish was on trend at the Gotham Awards and there’s a whole ’40s vibe to this look. Imagining Janet Snakehole’s pillbox hat and cigarette holder as accessories (I pretty much always want Janet Snakehole’s hat).

Ruth WilsonThe final of the three Gotham Awards looks is one that could be a big ball of huh, however I am all in and Ruth Wilson’s Dior ensemble with the oven mitt front pocket and crinkly top; I just really like the color combination. Soft pink lipstick with this updo and the silver metallic shoe goodness sets the whole thing off.

Michelle Dockery British Fashion AwardsMichelle Dockery continues to make style choices that go way beyond English Rose blah and at the British Fashion Awards she wore this foliage fantastic Erdem while presenting Erdem Moralioğlu with the Womenswear Designer of the Year accolade.

Gillian Jacobs FlareMoving on and it is the fourthOut of the Boxin a row for Gilliam Jacobs. Covering the new issue of Flare Jacobs once again gives good quote and pose. After Bust’s ’60s inspired shoot this is very much in the present and the Timo Weiland skirt and top combo paired with super funky Alexander Wang shoes is already giving me ideas for spring. Jacobs discusses the two TV shows she successfully landed in 2009 and why she choose Britta “It was a real Sliding Doors moment. My character on The Good Wife was sort of peripheral, Community was more central.” I adore Britta and even more I adore how much Jacobs loves this character “It’s more interesting and fun to be flawed. I also love that Britta bounces back no matter what.” Jacobs also briefly discusses her forthcoming Girls appearance with little detail aside from asking costume designer Jenn Rogien to steer clear of the very Britta stripes and leather.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

28 Nov

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Out of the Box” and it’s been a rather quiet week for big events, but fear not as there are still plenty of magazine editorials, red carpet events and talk show appearances with stylish moments to enjoy.

Natalie Dormer Nylon MagazineNatalie Dormer’s doing the whole Mockingjay promotional tour which is fine by us as she gives great face and quotes. This is for Nylon and I especially love the Preen by Thornton Bregazzi frock with the Sandro jacket. On her natural facial expression Dormer comments “I must have a variation on resting bitch face, like, maybe I have resting manipulative face, through no fault of my own” and she is aware of the perils of typecasting “Don’t overestimate the occasional laziness and lack of imagination that can be found in this industry that continuously recasts you in roles you’ve already played.”

natalie dormer nylonShowing remnants of the Cressida Mockingjay haircut with this side sweep, which was fine for Dormer except for weather related coldness “There were one too many polar vortexes in New York for this kind of haircut, but I enjoyed doing it. That’s a fun part of this job. You get taken out of your comfort zone physically, geographically, whatever.” And I am very into the Louis Vuitton vest/top ensemble and Azlee earrings (even if my ears are not pierced) in this second picture.

gillian jacobsCovering the new issue of Bust is Gillian Jacobs and she is definitely pulling off the Jean Shrimpton/Brigitte Bardot ’60s styling. Jacobs briefly describes her character on the next season of Girls as an artist who “challenges” Hannah (these spoilery pap shots will give you an idea of where these challenges lie) and she talks at length about Community. This includes Britta’s progressive attitude towards sex and how refreshing it is that “nothing terrible has happened to her because of it.” The whole interview is great and you can get this issue of Bust from both digital and physical newsstands now.

IMG_1119Doing the whole super cool coat draped over her shoulders thing is Emily Blunt on her way into David Letterman this week. The coat is Tory Burch, the dress David Koma and she hits every chic note. Even though this outfit doesn’t necessarily need it, my current red lipstick obsession has me hankering for a splash of crimson to really set it off.

Sally HawkinsThe same could be said for Sally Hawkins at the Paddington premiere, however her vermillion heels and super colorful floral skirt are both bold and fun making up for the lack of showstopping lipstick. The black turtleneck could be considered too casual, but as this is a daytime premiere for a family film it really works for me.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

21 Nov

It is a week of very little color from “Out of the Box” but black doesn’t have to mean safe or boring on the red carpet as this roundup demonstrates. The award season tiptoeing continues with contenders upping their style game and here are some of the best looks.

Jennifer AnistonInStyle hosted a screening of Jennifer Aniston’s Cake and she turned up wearing an outfit that steps out of her usual LBD territory embracing the ultimate fall pattern with plaid. This is also a really great coat and while it doesn’t venture too far from her style wheelhouse, this is a cool and relaxed look.

Leighton Meester and Gillian JacobsI heart these two so hard and Life Partners is high on my must see list, plus they both look so happy and super cute at the LA premiere. Leighton Meester does monochrome with a twist once again this time in Cushnie et Ochs and the splash of color with the green clutch and red lipstick works wonders. A J. Mendel navy strapless lace dress with a fitted bodice has Gillian Jacobs continuing down the darker dress route with a twist. Red crimson nail polish and strappy heels are a fun way to finish off this ensemble.

Matthew Goode and Allen LeechThe Imitation Game cast looks just as good in red carpet attire as they do in their code breaking costumesThe Good Wife’s Matthew Goode and soon to be Downton Abbey co-star (for the Christmas special) Allen Leech are both rather dashing all suited and booted at the New York premiere this week.

Charles DanceCharles Dance was also in attendance at this Imitation Game premiere looking cool as fuck. He’s working the polka dot scarf and serving up dapper realness.

James McAvoyIt’s not just award show pre-gaming as the BAFTA Scotland Awards took place on Sunday and James McAvoy took home Best Actor for Filth. He’s another suit wearing standout and his wife Anne-Marie Duff (who is excellent in everything she appears in) is one of the black dress/red lipstick stunners this week. I might have gone for a bolder shoe choice; maybe gold, but it could have come across as too matchy matchy with that fantastic clutch.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

14 Nov

Happy Friday! Time to see the best looks of the week including magazine covers, huge red carpet events, the start of award season chatter and other stylish outings in this edition of “Out of the Box.”

out 100 Samira WileySamira Wiley covers the OUT100 20th anniversary issue (along with Zachary Quinto, Sam Smith and Ellen Page – her cover is also incredibly striking) and it is a breathtaking image. This is a beautiful and stunning shot of the OITNB star and I am in awe; definitely one of THE magazine covers of the year.

Elizabeth BanksMoving on to the red carpet dress of the week as Elizabeth Banks brings it once again on a Hunger Games press tour and this Elie Saab Couture gown made my draw drop when I first saw it (in fact I’m still pretty mesmerized now). Capey train goodness and a dress that is world premiere worthy.

Kerry WashingtonKerry Washington has worn some exquisite Oscar de la Renta gowns in the past and at the Baby2Baby Gala she chose this beautiful and ultra feminine floral frock. While I’m not always into the mullet hemline it works well here as it gives us a chance to see the bowed Christina Louboutin sandals.

Busy PhilippsGoing from one kind of floral gown to another at the Baby2Baby Gala and Busy Philipps is serving beaded goodness in this super pretty ensemble.

Jenny SlateAwards season is in the early stages and this means it is time for actors talking to other actors about actorly things – which if you’ve followed my roundtable discussion comments you know I am amped for this time of year. At the Variety Studio: Actors on Actors event Jenny Slate went for dressed up stylings in Marnie whereas Felicity Jones opted for simple chic in a Saint Laurent top and leather Coach skirt; both are fantastic even if they look like they might be attending different events.

gillian jacobsTory Burch celebrated a new watch collection from this brand with a Vogue soiree and a whole bunch of lovely ladies wearing (you guessed it) Tory Burch. Gillian Jacobs in a surprise move is in one of the only non-patterned looks in an LBD with an embellished neckline and waist. Perfect for anyone who wants to do the black dress thing with a slight twist.

Rashida JonesRashida Jones was also at the Tory Burch event, also in Tory Burch and I love the shape and print on this dress. Could definitely see Joan wearing this on Elementary. Red lipstick bonus points.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

13 Nov

Welcome once again to Behind the Insta-Scenes! Bringing you a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off) antics.

This week we have the Broad City ladies still on tour, a teen movie queen on The Mindy Project, final table reads, prison superheroes and other set observations.

Julia Stiles is guest starring on The Mindy Project as an old friend of Danny’s and a Morgan love interest. I hope she drops some Kat Stratford dance moves.

http://instagram.com/p/vR4DP7N6qu/?modal=true

Ilana and her big clear bag of thrown out bagels is one of many amazing visual Broad City first year moments and a fan made a bagel plushie, which is also all kinds of awesome. The new season is just two months away and I cannot wait.

Final table read time for season 2 of Looking and January is going to be an excellent TV month as this returns at the start of 2015. Look at how adorable these dudes are.

Ryan Hansen’s TBT is going back to season 3 of Burning Love and if you ignore Ken Marino’s drool then it becomes a rather lovely cast shot. June Diane Raphael to be cast in everything please.

There is also a video to accompany this Morello doing the whole superhero posing thing, as Yael Stone enjoys some downtime on set.

Doing the same but in a much more sedated manner are the New Girl cast and it is a screen checking party in this photo from Erin O’Malley.

Lucy Liu revealed the view from the Elementary greenroom when they were on a night shoot this week and that’s a whole lot of New York office blockage with the Chrysler Building making an appearance. It’s a very hypnotic shot.

So many boxes all bearing the Greendale logo and this prop tease is courtesy of Gillian Jacobs.

Kroll Show is another January returnee (Wednesday 14 – the same night as Broad City!) and this brief glimpse is enough to send me down a PubLIZity YouTube rabbit hole.

Leighton Meester Covers Nylon: Talks Post Gossip Girl Projects

28 Oct

Recently I have found myself contemplating a Gossip Girl rewatch with Leighton Meester being one of the main reasons for this hankering (the other things being the clothes, music and noting all the times Dan is surprised by something Gossip Girl does). Meester has been busy after taking off the Queen B crown; she recently finished Of Mice and Men on Broadway and her new album Heartstrings came out this week. Plus a couple of movies with Like Sunday, Like Rain and Life Partners (starring another TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite – Gillian Jacobs) and Meester is covering the November issue of Nylon (on newsstands November 4) to promote these various projects.

Leighton MeesterIt’s a typical Nylon selection of clothes on the cover with all the patterns, fabrics and colors and while the star furry vest is giving me Independence Day feelings – this is the America Issue which I guess is where the star spangled vest and striped top come in – giving it a somewhat summery in tone, however the red is rather autumnal and it makes me want to reach for my favorite red lipstick (MAC Russian Red).

In the issue Meester talks about why she has pursued a variety of things post Gossip Girl citing how young she was when it started “once it was over, I wanted to do things that were more exciting and challenging and more memore my adult taste. Of course, that’s said with nothing but gratitude and love for that experience in that time of my life.” There’s also talk of the kind of roles Meester is interested in which explore characters who are “flawed, real human beings” and sadly “the roles of women standing alone on their own as whole, real, full people are few and far between.”

During Meester’s Of Mice and Men run she wrote an op-ed for The Huffington Post in response to the reactions she saw during most performances and looking at why the audience is so unsympathetic to her character’s plight. It is a thoughtful well reasoned piece which discusses misogyny and what it feels like to be on stage night after night playing a character who people laugh at when tragedy befalls them. Meester has long been an inspiring actress going way beyond her Blair Waldorf headband appeal and if anyone from that cast was to do a lifestyle website I wish it had been her.

Watch the trailer for Life Partners and hear the excellent title track from Leighton Meester’s new album below. For the full interview and more photos pick up a copy of Nylon on November 4 (available from both digital and physical newsstands).

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

13 Jun

There has been a whole host of events this week as the summer months are filled by conversations about the season of TV we have just experienced, along with various charity and fashion soirees taking place. This week’s “Out of the Box” is showcasing the best of these including the Fox “Girls Night Out” panel, the Women in Film 2014 Crystal + Lucy Awards and the amfAR Inspiration Gala.

Mindy KalingMindy Kaling’s looking a little trippy in Marc by Marc Jacobs at Fox’s “Girls Night Out.” I could see Megan Draper wearing this especially as it’s long sleeved and showing a whole lot of leg; the pattern is rather hypnotic and is on point with the late 60s psychedelic style.

chelsea perettiChelsea Peretti is a TV Ate My Wardrobe sweater queen on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and at the Fox “Girls Night Out” she is pulling off two trends we’re not always on board with; tulip dresses and open toe booties.

Laverne Cox amfarThe Orange is the New Black season 2 watch is preceding nicely (about to watch episode 8) and one thing it needs more of is Sophia. Lucky for us Laverne Cox has been hitting up various events (and the cover of Time) such as the amfAR Inspiration Gala in this stunning midnight blue gown.

Kerry WashingtonPicking up an accolade for excellence in television at the Women in Film 2014 Crystal + Lucy Awards is a good reason to return to the red carpet and Kerry Washington does just this in a very cool paint splatter effect Sportmax skirt and black top. Orange is what ties the look together without going too matchy matchy with lip color and AMAZING Louboutin ‘Geo’ studded toecap pumps.

Rose ByrneThe ‘Women in Film Max Mara Face of the Future’ is an honor that has been bestowed on Rose Byrne and Max Mara threw a cocktail party with W Magazine to celebrate. Byrne is of course in Max Mara and the sequins combined with a plunging neckline help her stand out. I love the choice of silver capped pumps and her minimal makeup (even though I’d love to see either a deep red or bright pink lip color, but that might just be me).

Kiernan ShipkaAlso attending this Max Mara event is Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka and she continues to kill it on the red carpet. Wearing Max Mara Shipka goes for something edgier with a leather skirt on the bottom and contrasts this with a white silk top. The yellow Christian Louboutin bag adds a pop of color and she once again nails the age appropriateness of her sartorial choices. Jon Hamm recently spoke about Shipka during this LA Times roundtable discussion just how lucky they were to get someone as talented as Shipka from such a young age.

gillian jacobsDoing the super summer frock thing at the Monte Carlo Television Festival is Gillian Jacobs and she is doing it well in this red strapless number. This is a super cute look and I can’t wait to see Jacobs on the next season of Girls and everything else possible.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

25 Apr

After the foray into Hannibal last week, we return to the red carpet this week with the Tribeca Film Festival and some frocks that have caught our attention.

Maggie Grace and Aubrey PlazaAubrey Plaza and Maggie Grace are both pulling off simple and elegant looks at the About Alex premiere with Plaza in scarlet Valentino and Maggie Grace in crisp white Kaufmanfranco. Details like the bow on Plaza’s dress and the flash of canary yellow with both Grace’s pumps and belt set off both looks. Luckily Grace’s heels distract from the nude heel let down on Plaza.

Mindy KalingMindy Kaling ditches her usual colorful palette for a super chic black Helmut Lang ensemble while supporting co-star Chris Messina directorial endeavor Alex of Venice (yes I’ve picked the two movie premieres with Alex in the title). While I don’t want to see Kaling ditching her bold red carpet choices, she looks really great in this non-signature style.

America Ferrera and Judith LightAn Ugly Betty reunion at the premiere of America Ferrera’s X/Y with Judith Light posing with her former co-star. We love Judith Light here at TV Ate My Wardrobe (this includes Broad City’s version) and her floral coat is everything. Especially when paired with black pants and turtleneck. Judith Light you can do no wrong. Ferrera looks wonderful in a Roland Mouret navy and white halter dress and the orange Rodo clutch adds a splash of bright color that ties this all together.

Gillian Jacobs Life PartnersGillian Jacobs poses for a portrait studio session at the Tribeca Film Festival for her new film “Life Partners” and this falls into my striped clothes obsession. It has a hint of the Tanya Taylor outfit we featured a few weeks ago on Jessica Williams and the contrasting vermilion color with gold piping produces a knockout look for Jacobs.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

28 Mar

It’s week two of Paleyfest and this has delivered more fantastic outfits from the stars of shows like Mad MenMasters of SexAgents of SHIELDThe Mindy Project, Community and Veep. Here are the ones that stood out.

The Paley Center For Media's PaleyFest 2014 Honoring "Mad Men"The women of Mad Men work a variety of styles both on and off the show; however they don’t look like they are attending different events which can sometimes be an issue at these panels. Kiernan Shipka is once again showing that being a teenager doesn’t take away any fashion credibility and her Dolce & Gabbana floral dress is once again age appropriate and on point. Christina Hendricks does a nice job of honoring L’Wren Scott in an amazing green dress by the designer that flatters and accentuates those famous curves.

Jessica Paré is the most high fashion of the group (the absent January Jones also vies for this spot) and this Roksanda Ilincic frock looks pretty standard from this angle. What this shot is missing out is how extreme the half-wrap orange fold is and this is a dress that looks amazing in a lot of photos and a mess in others. Paré pulls it off even if I’m not in love with her shoes. Elisabeth Moss is showing off her fun side, which we have been seeing on the red carpet and in the recent New York magazine profile in a black mini Emilio Pucci number. The white lace panel and bow detail adds a hint of vintage and combining bold red lips and shoes adds that extra something to the outfit.

Chloe BennetI really shouldn’t like this Mason by Michelle Mason jumpsuit that Agent of SHIELD’s Chloe Bennet is wearing as I’ve made my feelings on jumpsuit’s clear last week and black tends to be the only kind of jumpsuit that I could even consider. For some reason I think this looks really great and I’m just going to go with it. The slightly different blue pumps make sure it’s not too matchy matchy and I am forever a sucker for pockets.

Annaleigh AshfordNow this is more my usual speed (pockets again) and Annaleigh Ashford from Masters of Sex looks incredibly charming in this Novis dress. I was worried the red pumps might be a step too far, but the more I look at them, the more they work. The variety of textures, pattern and color make this a frock to covet and I’m excited that Ashford’s Betty is returning for season 2.

Mindy Kaling and Chris MessinaThe Mindy Project is back next week after they left us on a kissing cliffhanger in January and here is a sneak peek of how adorable Chris Messina and Mindy Kaling look together. Kaling is wearing a beautiful emerald green jacquard Topshop high-waisted skirt and crop top; she explains in this month’s Vogue that “It’s really tempting to not take chances. But I don’t want to be fearful.” This sentiment sums up Kaling’s outfit decisions well and I love how she embraces fashion in this way even if it doesn’t always work. On this occasion it definitely does and this is great color on her.

Gillian JacobsAs Britta Perry, Gillian Jacobs doesn’t get to wear a whole array of party frocks – don’t get me wrong I love her endless supply of striped sweaters, plaid shirts and jeans – so at the Community panel it is good to see her bring it in House of Holland. The coral and navy starburst disco dress is a bold, fun choice.

Julia Louis Dreyfus PaleyFestVeep returns in a couple of weeks and it’s yet another show I need to catch up on (Game of Thrones is giving me so much side eye right about now). Julia Louis-Dreyfus looks super sophisticated in this charcoal grey getup; the black pattern and belting are both flattering and stops it from becoming just a dress for the office.
