The Americans 2.03 “The Walk In” Review: “They’re Never Going to Stop”

The Americans is all about family this season and “The Walk In” focuses on mother and daughter as both Elizabeth and Paige go searching for something; Paige wants to know why her parents act so secretive all the time and her new friend Kelli offers up a reason that doesn’t satisfy Paige’s curiosity “Aren’t all parents?” I have a Kelli theory, more on that below. Elizabeth is dealing with the emotional fallout from the deaths in the season premiere and through a series of flashbacks we gain further insight into Elizabeth and her friendship with Leanne.

This week’s review will concentrate on the Jennings family, but there are developments in the Stan/Nina relationship as he declares his love for her. Nina has resorted Arkady’s faith in her thanks to her duplicitous work and winning charms with Stan. Stan is none the wiser that he is being played in this manner and this relationship could be his downfall.

The Americans 2.03 1966The episode opens with a glimpse into the past with Elizabeth and Leanne chatting about her son and The Beatles (it’s 1966) as they wait to do whatever spy shenanigans lead to bloody hands later on. Both women are dressed relatively conservatively, they don’t look out of place and they blend in because it’s their job to not draw attention. This would appear to be their regular attire as there is nothing to suggest they are hiding their identities other than maybe their hats. Elizabeth at this point isn’t sure if she wants kids, something the center would not be happy with and you can see how uncomfortable she is in this world of “Here, There and Everywhere” and other such follies. This discussion is important as it allows us to see Elizabeth once again sharing a moment with a woman who is going through everything she is. Leanne is more than just a friend, she’s Elizabeth’s mirror and to see her murdered in this manner along with her daughter is devastating and Elizabeth has a promise to make good on in the present.

The Americans 2.03 1967 ElizabethContinuing with the flashbacks, this is 1967 and Elizabeth has finally decided she is ready to have kids just as the whole world seems to be going to hell “This war, they’re killing everyone. They’re never going to stop.” It’s an odd sentiment to prompt the desire for children, however I think this about Elizabeth making connections and leaving something behind even if it does all come crashing down around them.

The Americans 2.03 1967It wouldn’t be right to talk about flashback Elizabeth without including a shot of flashback Philip and these earbuds look a whole lot like Apple headphones (of course they are not). Philip’s 1967 hair has slightly more of a side sweep flick and he seems surprised when Elizabeth says she is ready for kids. Elizabeth also points out that he will be a good father, something we know to be true.

The Americans 2.03 too much lipglossBack to the present and Paige as she takes teenage rebellion in a different direction to the staple boys and booze. Elizabeth does ask Paige to remove her lip gloss as she deems it to be too much and she tells Paige “You’re so beautiful, you don’t need it.” It’s a sweet moment and Paige doesn’t respond with snark or sass, this demeanor is saved for her father later on.  The teenage characters on a show like this can be a minefield as both 24 and Homeland can testify. So far Paige is walking the thin line between her curiosities being problematic for her parents and being problematic for viewers; it’s yet to enter annoying territory and so far I’m impressed with how they are handling the Paige aspect. Paige is questioning what her parents are up to and it’s currently an obstacle to overcome without feeling contrived. It’s not a cougar or hit and run yet.

The not knocking incident has failed to deter Paige from her quest like Philip and Elizabeth presumed it would and she takes a trip to see Aunt Helen. Aunt Helen is real in the sense that there is someone playing this role with the relevant props in the house; for now Paige will hopefully be satisfied.

The Americans 2.03 disappointed dadPhilip’s changed out of the friendly sweater into serious dad shirt as he sits in the semi dark waiting for his daughter to get home. We’re so used to seeing Philip as the fun dad and so it’s quite the departure for him in this setting to turn on the stern disciplinarian tone. He’s pissed at Paige for a variety of reasons 1) she lied and “Lying will not be tolerated,” 2) she’s poking her nose into things that are dangerous and could blow their cover, 3) there’s an unknown danger out there and it’s hard to protect her when she’s deceiving them like this.

Philip is also angry because Paige is coming across (in his eyes) as a spoiled brat as she complains about wanting to know their extended family, as if the one Philip and Elizabeth have “worked hard to create” is not enough. Philip mentions that his father died when he was six, this may or may not be true as we know that Elizabeth’s father died when he was young. Paige is pushing just as most teenagers do, except most teenagers don’t have spies for parents and the image of dead Amelia is probably flashing up every time he sees his daughter do something reckless. I do feel for Paige in this scene as Philip is pretty terrifying with his “I’m disappointed in you” speechifying. Plus he invokes “young lady” which is always the worst thing in these kinds of conversations.

After this heated discussion Paige rings Kelli, the girl she met on the bus and I’m wondering if Kelli is one of the people the center has utilized to watch the kids. Kelli interacts with Paige which could dampen this theory, but it also makes sense for Kelli to get close to Paige to protect her. Or she could just be a girl on the bus and I’m thinking far too much about this.

The Americans 2.03 TabElizabeth and Philip pick up their SPN Secure Transport credentials from behind this soda machine which sells Tab! Fun fact – Diet Coke didn’t launch until August 1982 so it wasn’t available at this point. Now I really want a Tab Clear. Elizabeth joins the ranks of characters whose coats I covet (see Olivia Pope, Virginia Johnson, Jess Day). Elizabeth is unhappy with the quality of their documentation and I’m glad to see them address how quickly they need to gather materials for these undercover tasks.

The Americans 2.03The trip to Newport News is a bit of a disaster as the thing they are after is no longer there and Elizabeth encounters a worker while she is snooping. Last season I don’t think Elizabeth would have hesitated in dropping him as she did with the security guard in episode 4 (“In Control”), now things are different and she uses intimidation as a weapon. Derek brings out photos of his children as a not so subtle way to plead for his life and this hits Elizabeth’s new family related nerve. It also provides her the leverage she needs as she takes a photo of one of his sons as a form of insurance. Disguise wise they’re both rocking the neutral beige tones, Philips got some big frames and a wig that resembles Clarke.

The Americans 2.03 ElizabethHere’s a closer look at Elizabeth’s Farrah Fawcett feathered flick wig. It’s more of a bob than Fawcett’s long locks as she’s meant to look like someone who works for a transport company, not a Charlie’s Angel.

The Americans 2.03 Elizabeth and JaredAnother wig and this time Elizabeth has the huge ’80s glasses, along with a sweater vest that’s enough to make anyone feel like they’re in the company of someone safe. Elizabeth is posing as Ann Chadwick from the Child Advocacy Agency so she can check on Leanne and Emmett’s surviving son Jared and keep a promise to her friend. I think there is a desire to see where her children could end up if the same happened to them and Elizabeth is worried they don’t have any real friends. Philip hits a nerve when he responds “Isn’t that how you wanted it?”

Jared is of course devastated by what happened to his family and has a big dose of survivor guilt; he questions if he could have done something to save them if he had been in the hotel room instead of at the pool before he breaks down in Elizabeth’s arms.

The Americans 2.03 watching it burnElizabeth doesn’t follow through with her promise; she doesn’t give Jared the letter from Leanne’s that reveals the truth about who they really were. What’s the point in causing him even greater pain and an even longer list of questions and uncertainty? By doing this she is protecting him, if he knew what would he do? Elizabeth watches the letter burn as another great Americans music moment takes place with Peter Gabriel’s “Here Comes the Flood” and this song insinuates the danger from this world they live in has only just begun. There are ominous overtones and it echoes the earlier flashback statement that “They’re never going to stop.”

Scandal 3.12 “We Do Not Touch the First Ladies” Review

Scandal is constantly shifting the pieces and the players who are in control; you would think Fitz as the President is top of this long chain, but he’s just as much a pawn in the machinations of the show as much as anyone else. Jake currently sits in the prize B613 chair and he has access to everything, including Tom the ‘loyal’ secret service agent who delivers video from inside the Oval Office. Jake doesn’t have all the power as Quinn so smugly demonstrates and he’s also taking part in the boyfriend charade with Olivia.

What of Olivia? Olivia used to hold all the cards, however as the show has expanded her ability to control her surroundings has waned and at this moment she’s pretty much in the same position as Fitz. This has been a problem for Scandal and even though this is a much stronger outing than last week, it’s Mellie that comes out on top.

Scandal 3.12 Olivia and FitzThe episode opens with a post-sex argument between Olivia and Fitz – hey guys isn’t it meant to go argument followed by makeup sex? – as Fitz is pissed about the Jake of it all. This is where Olivia delivers a very powerful statement that is repeated throughout the episode and I’m glad that Olivia has finally laid out her feelings in this manner:

“I did not do this for you! I did this for me! So I could work on the campaign. So I could walk down the street and not be whispered about! So I could stop being known as the woman who screwed the president! So the scarlet “A” on my chest could be invisible! So I’m not a joke. I am a person. I am not a hen, I am not a prize and I have a business to run, people to support, a life to lead a desire to wake up and face myself in the mirror every day.”

One problem with this is that she has lost a lot of her agency and so while she claims she is now doing this for herself, there are others who are in control of her fate. The black and white geometrical jacquard Marni jacket is Olivia Pope at her most frantic and the uncontrolled nature of the pattern reflects her current situation.

Scandal 3.12 Mellie in coralMellie is the star of this week and this is a sequel of sorts to “Everything’s Coming up Mellie” as we find out what happened after Fitz’s father raped her. In the present Mellie is once again all about the bold colors (I think they’re working through the color spectrum) and this coral Melinda Eng frock is beautiful. This scene with Olivia is problematic as it suggests that Mellie is better because she didn’t give into temptation with Andrew and it pits these two women against each other once again.

Scandal 3.12 MellieThis color palette of the present is in contrast to the muted tones of her past as we see the bond between Mellie and Andrew Nichols develop. As far as we know Andrew is the only person that knows what really happened to Mellie and he protects her now as he did back then. Mellie finally succumbs to temptation as they discuss the portraits of the first ladies and plants one on Andrew and it looks like the best kiss of her life. So of course she bolts and leaves Andrew to touch the painting of Jackie Kennedy that he’s really not meant to touch.

Scandal 3.12 AdnanIn sleeping with people you probably shouldn’t with news, Harrison is still hooking up with Adnan and she’s now got him buying seats at fundraisers for him. All the power she has over him is linked to another mysterious name – this time Clearwater – and apparently it is totes bad. Adnan looks stunning in silver, but Cyrus is less than thrilled when he finds out who she is. If only he knew that she’s also in cahoots with Mama Pope. What’s their big plan? This is another reason why it’s no longer the show run by Olivia as there are too many other players who are 5 steps ahead with their diabolical schemes.

Scandal 3.12 Abby DVFIt’s an eventful week for Abby as she opens up to David and tells him she loves him, she also hacks his email (true love does this) and saves his life (with Huck’s help) and she does so while wearing another fabulous DVF wrap dress. David finally says his “I love you” all while fearing for his life; the big takeaway here is to never pause to look into a trunk that has just randomly opened. Oh and tell your girlfriend when you’re doing something dangerous.

Other things of note that occurred this week; Olivia is unsure if she has feelings for Jake, Cyrus continues to freak about who the leak is and is completely unaware that it’s James. Cyrus should look at little closer and realize his husband is sweating a lot. Sally sees red on the carpet and it triggers flashbacks to killing Daniel Douglas; she’s pretty much a loose cannon and Leo is trying to rein her in. Some stuff happens with Quinn as she tells Olivia that Huck licked her face. Thanks for that memory, show. Huck blames Olivia for what happened as he is a monster on a leash. Oh and Jake really wants beer and burgers, not red wine and popcorn. Maybe that’s a sign this fake relationship is doomed. James really should have said his cover name out loud before sending the first text and it gets funnier the more Publius is uttered.

The Americans 2.02 “Cardinal” Review: “How are we Going to Live Like This?”

There is a strong ripple effect reverberating through this week’s episode of The Americans as a result of the still unexplained murder of Emmett, Leanne and their daughter Amelia and the tension has increased ten-fold as they try and figure out the why of it all. Part of this is because they could fill a book with how this family is ‘just like us’ right down to the number and gender of their children. It’s a huge wake up call for both Philip and Elizabeth, even more so than the events at the end of last season that has already seen Elizabeth return with a slightly less rigid belief system. It’s not just Philip and Elizabeth who are taking note of these murders as they are all over the news (with no mention of course of their real profession) and Martha’s getting a gun for protection because of it – an early front-runner for Chekhov’s gun if there ever was one.

We are going to be looking at this episode once again through the lens of costuming and how this heightened paranoia is impacting the framing of certain shots.

The Americans 2.02 cream topWe open with Elizabeth still in full surveillance mode with everything and everyone posing as a potential danger; even the woman picking up children could be more than she seems. It’s all too close to home now and Elizabeth’s overall concern has switched from her duty to her country to her role as a mother. This ensemble is in tune with Elizabeth’s at home clothes and it’s the parallels it draws with another character which is why it stands out.

The Americans 2.02 NinaLike Elizabeth, Nina is leading in a double life and there is a noticeable difference in their styling. Elizabeth is playing the all American mom, whereas Nina is still very much a Russian in her surroundings and clothes. This cream sweater is not revealing in any way and the bow adds a hint of femininity. Nina does exert her sexuality outside the Embassy with Stan, but inside she is very much about toeing the company line, complete with the right look. Last season she also had to resort to sexual favors in the Embassy for information, however she holds her ground with Blondie loving Oleg with steely and determined fashion. White tones reflect innocence and both Elizabeth and Nina know how to work this angle to their advantage. There is also a level of detachment that Elizabeth has lost in light of recent events and yet Nina is still in possession of this; for how long?

The Americans 2.02 brown trenchAny good spy has a trench coat and Elizabeth is no different, she is rocking the slightly shorter length and as with a lot of clothes in the early 80s the color brown is very popular. Bold patterns and neon doesn’t come in until later and we’ve got the ’70s to thank for all the beige tones.

The Americans plaid and spotsPhilip’s taking the Harrison from Scandal approach with plaid and polka dots and this emphasizes not the slick tailoring as it does in Scandal, but rather how unassuming Philip is at work. Philip’s a travel agent not a threat, right?

The Americans 2.02 PhilipWell that’s when Philip’s not donning this delightful wig and moustache combo as he goes for a workman look and as I’ve seen mentioned elsewhere, he looks like he could play 2012’s Rust Cohle’s brother with this getup. Philip definitely gets the skeezier looking disguises and this is reminiscent of his revenge outfit from the pilot. This is far removed from Philip in dad gear as evidenced by Fred not recognizing him from their moment at the theme park, though that was incredibly quick and there was probably very little eye contact.

the Americans 2.02 playboyTo get some 1980s context here is a Playboy that Philip found on his Fred house search and Fred must be a Bo Derk fan as this issue is almost two years old (the date on it is March, 1980). Other headlines of relevance to today is the debate to legalize marijuana and this is when it still probably sounded cool to call it grass.

The Americans 2.02 LifeMore 1980s references ahoy as Elizabeth plays Life with Henry and Paige, I used to love this game and I’m pretty sure the spinning wheel was the reason why. Henry is less interested and wants to watch TV because that is real life. Henry is oblivious to everything once again and earlier in the episodes he explains his theory as to why two tests in one day is a bad idea. Paige is still suspicious and what she witnessed last week hasn’t deterred her snooping.

The Americans 2.02 Elizabeth phoneElizabeth’s wearing more from the brown color spectrum and here comes another ’80s pop culture reference as she suggests a trip to the movies to watch Raiders of the Lost Ark. Despite having come out in the summer of 1981 (we’re now in January 1982), it’s not all that surprising that a movie this huge is still playing in theaters; it didn’t get a VHS release until 1983.

The Americans 2.02 baseball capThe movie decision is so Elizabeth can respond to a call and rather than leave the kids in the house alone, the movie works as a suitable ruse. This is a dark shot, but Elizabeth’s only disguise is pulling back her hair and sticking on a baseball cap. She is dealing with a friend of their cause and this woman is also high on a range of substances so it’s unlikely she will remember much of anything, but it still feels like a bold move when things are at this heightened state of danger.

The Americans 2.02 leather glovesThere are so many tight shots throughout this episode, none tighter than Philip as he talks to Elizabeth, followed by Martha. He’s meant to be going back to Martha’s but down to a combination of what is going on at home and the mark that has been left on his hand after he’s been electrocuted there’s only one place he wants to be. It’s worth noting that Philip puts on the leather gloves while he is on the phone to Martha, as if he is trying to cover the mark even when she can’t see it.

The Americans 2.02 mirrorThis is another interesting use of framing as the closing shot of the episode features Elizabeth and Philip off to one side, shown in the reflection of the mirror. This discussion has Philip once again lamenting his decision to use Henry last week and Elizabeth tells him he didn’t have a choice. Philip’s response is that he did and it’s another occasion where the camera pushes in hard on their close up and it’s like everything is closing in around them.

It’s an incredibly intimate and telling conversation as Elizabeth brings up Jared, Emmett and Leanne’s surviving son and Philip reveals he saw him and heard his screams upon discovering his murdered family. “Taken care of” is a phrase that is lacking any real empathy, it sounds cold and like a transaction. There’s no real answer to this mess and Elizabeth has only just realized the impact that this could have on their children. She asks “How are we going to live like this?” Philip thinks they will get used to it and this is where the question of choice comes up. Elizabeth and Philip decided to become what they are, but Paige and Henry are a product of this and they have no agency of their own. We end on this shot and this line of thought knowing it’s going to have implications for the rest of the season.

Scandal 3.11 “Ride Sally, Ride” Costume Review: Photo Ops and Fake Smiles

Scandal is back and so are the twisty, back stabby storylines and fabulous clothes. Previously with these Scandal reviews I have talked through the episode via the costuming and that is going to remain the case. There will be one slight change as a handful of costumes will take the spotlight and then there will be a separate gallery at the end to highlight other outfits that catch our eye. As with everything on TV Ate My Wardrobe we want to keep these articles as fresh and relevant as possible; so while I don’t necessarily need to write a paragraph about Harrison’s amazing suits each week, we still want to show off the amazing tailoring. Feedback is always appreciated so if there is anything you want to see from these Scandal costume reviews then let us know in the comments.

Scandal 3.11 cheersThe first of two staged photo ops in “Ride Sally, Ride” and this one comes with so many fake smiles and gritted teeth. Both Mellie and Olivia are wearing their power colors with Olivia in white Prada and Mellie opting for a red (you can see the color version in the gallery below). The black and white stills, a Scandal signature are even more pertinent in scenes like this one where the paparazzi are present. The goblet wine glasses are not quite the Olivia Pope ultra thin stemmed standard but they will do.

Scandal 3.11 wine cardigan no tieAs seen later, Olivia is on a wine chugging mission in the appropriate wine cardigan attire as she questions exactly why she is doing all of this and what it means to be a patriot. Jake is unwavering in his devotion to his Commander-in-Chief and this is why he has taken the job as Command. Jake claims that it will be different now that he is in charge; for starters he is taking a much more relaxed approach to the suit wearing and the lack of tie reflects his more casual Command. Once again Scott Foley is looking pretty damn good in a suit – I’ve been watching a lot of Felicity recently so it took a moment to acclimatize to the older less plaid shirt wearing Foley – and he steps up to the patriot plate in a way I’m sure he doesn’t mind.

Scandal 3.11 photo opTo the second staged photo moment and the bachelor Olivia has chosen as a cover is not from Mellie’s list. She won’t give Mellie the satisfaction. Matching coffee cups with well put together casual, yet stylish (of course) park walking attire and they look like a dream couple. Of course it’s WAY more complicated than that and there are real feelings at stake here, definitely for Jake and while it’s not the same for Olivia because of Fitz, there’s an attraction. Jake doesn’t throw whiskey glasses across the room, nor does he have door open/door closed tantrums, so you know he’s pretty good dating material. Even if it’s all for show.

Scandal 3.11 threesomeAaaaand things just got even more complicated with the new VP nominee choice Andrew Nichols as he spoke of a woman he was once in love with and lost. Of course that woman turns out to be Mellie and this love triangle just grew another side. It will be good to see Mellie lavished with attention and once again she looks stunning in red. Mellie’s wearing all the colors this week with green, royal blue and teal making an appearance. It’s all about the bold colors to emphasize a message of power; Mellie is no wallflower despite the endless Fitz rumors.

Scandal 3.11 AdnanAnother lady in red and it’s the mysterious Adnan Salif, the very person who Harrison has been terrified of and why he has been a wreck since finding out that she is back in the country. Harrison is also pretty attracted to her and instead of this ending in a bloody mess it ends up in a tryst on the desk. Oh and kudos show for the surprise that Adnan is a woman and shame on me for just assuming it was going to be a dude.

Sleepy Hollow Finale Review: Whaaaaaaaat?

A good twist brings out my Macaulay Culkin Home Alone impression and the last 15 minutes of the Sleepy Hollow double bill was all hands on cheeks, mouth agape. Nicely played, Sleepy Hollow. This first season has raised the bar for fast paced storytelling with an emotional core; it can be both incredibly creepy and heartwarming. It’s safe to say that the old misty eyes were induced several times over this double bill. Ichabod’s costuming has been a big discussion point here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and after last week’s brief foray into modern attire; he finally found a solution to his clothing dilemma.

Sleepy Hollow finaleThe second of the two episodes opened with what seemed to be a Katrina infused dream, nothing new here. Instead the scene subverted expectations and Ichabod was very much awake and in the real world, except the real world was masking as his old world with a re-enactment. Balancing the end of world doom with moments of brevity like this one is what makes this show such a fun watching experience and even though Ichabod can’t get his head around aspects of modernity, like why would you want to re-enact something as brutal as war, it provides a new clothing outlet for him. Yes the outfit Ichabod is wearing in Purgatory isn’t the same one we have seen him in throughout the year, but his new threads and they look a lot like his old ones.

Jenny makes a joke about getting rid of his “ratty coat” and this is not on Ichabod’s list of things to do “Please, and risk it be worn ironically by purveyors of artisanal marmalade who discovered it at the local thrift shop, I thank you no. For judge a man not by the wear of what he wears, but by the where and how he wears it.” Like most people Ichabod feels attachment to certain items of clothing, this is pretty much how I get every time I have to stop wearing a pair of hole ridden Cons and Ichabod has had that coat for two centuries. Bonds are formed.

Talking of bonds, the link between Abbie and Ichabod is strong and the strength of Sleepy Hollow lies in this relationship. Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie have this amazing ability to sell any of the bananas plot points; zombie George Washington? Sure! A trip to Purgatory? Why not! The banter and the more tender moments slightly diminish the joy of Crane getting Katrina out of purgatory – especially as she is quickly whisked away by the headless horseman – the hugs and declarations of loyalty between Ichabod and Abbie are a sure fire way to invoke all the feelings.

Now Abbie is trapped in a garish pink dollhouse, when Abbie and Jenny first discussed this place of sanction I imagined a traditional Victorian version. There’s actually something creepier about the one we get as it looks so out of place in the world between worlds and the bright color does little to comfort as it’s incredibly disorientating in this realm of darkness.

The big twist is that Henry Parish, the sin eater is actually both War and Jeremy Crane, son of Ichabod and Katrina. From the moment his hand healed of its own accord I figured there was something up with Henry, but in no way did I see this big reveal coming. John Noble is so good at portraying a sweet, put upon character (see Walter Bishop), I forgot that he can also play malevolent and bitter (see Walternate and Denethor). This is some huge child abandonment issues on show here, though on this occasion he should really cut his parents some slack.

Other finale highlights include reactions to emoticons, Ichabod realizing that flip phones are so last decade, Yolanda, fist bumps, Spy Daddy and zombie George Washington.

So Abbie’s stuck in a dollhouse, Katrina’s been taken, Ichabod’s been put in hole in the ground bound by roots and Jenny lies unconscious in her upturned truck. Oh and Irving is in jail. That’s not a good place for any of these characters to end the season. 2013 Costume Designer Guild Award Nominees Announced

Award season is in full swing and the Costume Designer Guild has announced who is in the running for 16th annual Costume Awards. The event will take place on Saturday, February 22 and some of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s most talked about shows have been nominated. They are split into three categories and this means that period and contemporary costuming doesn’t go up against each other. As is the general rule with awards nominations there are some shows that I think deserved recognition and are absent, particularly first season standouts like Masters of Sex, HannibalThe Americans, The Bridge and Sleepy Hollow.

Best of TV Costuming 2013: The Many Looks of Orphan Black and Tatiana Maslany

Continuing TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2013″ costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items that we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking, we want to look at this year’s TV through the prism of costume.

I came late to Orphan Black this year and an article discussing the incredible performance(s) of Tatiana Maslany is long overdue. Same applies to the costume design work, as this plays a part in defining each clone and how we perceive them.

Sarah Orphan Black We could do a Spice Girls categorization of each character boiling them down to one part of their personality through their clothes and hair styling:

  • Rock Chick Clone
  • Hippy Science Clone
  • Suburban Clone
  • Crazy Clone
  • Fashionista Clone
  • Serious Cop Clone

Reducing these characters to broad categorizations could be viewed as either a disservice or high praise; each individual clone has a distinctive look and on the surface level this reveals a certain amount of information about who they are. Of course their inner world might not be reflected by these outward characteristics which is why this might seem too reductive.

Tatiana Maslany plays each version and for practical reasons having a variety of strong looks helps when they share the same face. Hair, makeup and costume all help with this process, but without an actress as gifted as Maslany it would be a hard task to pull off. Luckily, Maslany produces a variety of performances that often makes me forget that I’m watching the same person play all of these roles and it takes a special talent to do this. Costuming does play an important role and while each character can be broken down into a ‘type’ it doesn’t come across as contrived or like they’ve gone through a lookbook of archetypes.

Sarah Orphan Black pilotColor isn’t a big part of Sarah Manning’s wardrobe and black leather is a staple. Sarah begins the season on the outside when it comes to her clone origins and her demeanor is a reflection of her difficult upbringing. It’s a look that projects an “I don’t give a shit” attitude and it’s Sarah’s way of protecting herself from the world. Posing as Beth requires a wardrobe change and Beth’s style is far more traditional and functional.

Orphan Black clash t-shirtClothes are part of how we reveal who we are to the world and Sarah slips up by not letting go of part of herself with her “London Calling” tee, prompting Paul to question why Beth is wearing something so un-Beth like. Sarah is browsing through Beth’s Ann Taylor/J. Crew looking wardrobe in her Clash shirt instantly reflecting how different these characters are. It’s hard for Sarah to completely lose herself to this new persona even if the initial endgame is to get a buttload of cash. By wearing Beth’s clothes it helps fool people on a surface level and in cases where those questions become too much there are other methods; she uses sex to disarm and distract Paul.

Alison and Sarah Orphan BLackThroughout the first season of Orphan Black we see a variety of impersonating combos; Helena as Sarah as Beth, Alison as Sarah and Sarah as Alison. On each occasion one wears the clothes of the other (and Helena hides her mass of her under a beanie) and they fool most people because external factors like clothing is something we use to identify who someone is. This is why Sarah’s Clash shirt arouses suspicion in Paul.

Helena as BethHelena’s trip into the police station in this attire should have triggered more questions as the red around Helena’s eyes is pretty distinctive. It helps both Sarah and Helena that Beth has been going through some things and her general behavior has been different lately; certain character ticks don’t register as particularly odd.

Switching coats is a quick way to temporarily look like someone else and each character’s style can be summed up in their outerwear.

HelenaHelena’s oversized parka conceals her gender at first and a Helena/Sarah coat switch later in the season is part of a grand plan to gain the upper hand, but it also reveals Kira’s identity to Helena and this sets off a chain of events that almost ends in tragedy.

KatiaThe clone we barely knew and Katia is all about a flamboyant statement in her oversized sunglasses and fur coat.

CosimaCosima’s red funnel neck coat is my personal favorite and would feature high on the coat covet list. Cosima’s look is heavy on the accessories with chunky jewelry and scarves. Dreadlocks and tattoos also point to her free spirit and she’s the only one of the clones who hasn’t been impersonated by another so far.

AlisonBIOOn the other end of the spectrum lives Alison and on the outside she is pure suburban soccer mom. It’s all Lululemon, gillets and pastels as Alison projects this image of modern day Stepford Wife. Ah suburbia, you have many secrets and Alison is so tightly wound that she starts to question which parts of her life are fake and which are real.

Alison pjsThis includes torture by glue gun in a matching pair of gingham pajamas. Alison is definitely resourceful in an almost Jason Bourne use your surroundings kind of way.

FelixIt’s not just all the Tatiana Maslany’s that can pull off multiple looks and Jordan Gavaris’ Felix plays multiple roles throughout Orphan Black’s first season. His regular style mirrors Sarah’s as black is a defining feature and considering how close these two characters are it makes sense that they mimic each other in this way.

Felix Orphan BlackWhen required he can play a part and whenever he interacted with Alison and her family it produced some truly memorable moments. From playing dress up with her kids to his role as suburban bartender – the jumper draped over the shoulders is everything – to saving Alison from the intervention in her living room Felix livened things up. Felix is an important emotional tether for Sarah and a grounding point for the clone dramaz; Felix is part of the emotional core without being sentimental and he doesn’t sugar coat his feelings telling Sarah “Is every man in your life a complete wanker besides me?!”

Orphan Black is one of the most thrilling shows I have watched in 2013 and Tatiana Maslany’s is exceptional throughout. It’s also a testament to her as an actress that her Parks and Recreation guest star stint delivered yet another style of performance and a completely different look. Set those calendars to April 19 when Orphan Black returns for season 2.

Best of TV Costuming 2013: Pattern and Color on Hannibal

Continuing TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2013″ costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items that we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking, we want to look at this year’s TV through the prism of costume.

The first season of Hannibal premiered in April and from the outset it produced some of the most visually stunning episodes on TV this year. As with the character, Hannibal’s costuming is rich, textured and multilayered. Hannibal is also the only show to appear as part of “Look of the Week” as a piece of set design, rather than just costuming.

Hannibal 1.01 HannibalStarting with the titular character everything that Hannibal wears is meticulous and well tailored. Costume designer Christopher Hargadon predominantly dresses Hannibal in three piece suits (often in plaid) and the elaborate quality reflects Hannibal’s desire to have only the finer things in life. There is an element of control with everything that Hannibal does and yet he also likes to play with his environment and this includes his wardrobe. 

Hannibal 1.11 HannibalPattern clashing is in abundance and this style choice is featured in pretty much every episode. There is nothing accidental about the pocket square matching the teal shirt and the colors of Hannibal’s suits are incredibly rich, even in their darkness. On this occasion Hannibal is wearing paisley with plaid; it’s bold and distinctive much like Hannibal. Dark earth tones are a signature and you won’t see him in bright primary colors. As the season progresses, his suits get even darker to mirror just how far Hannibal is pushing Will’s mental state.

Hannibal 1.08 dishevelledEven when he has been in a full on dirty fight to the death, as he has in “Fromage” he still looks relatively well put together. His pocket square has been ruffled and his tie is at an angle, however this all plays into his act of being in shock. If he wasn’t playing this role there is no doubt that he would have straightened these up and fixed his hair.

Hannibal 1.13 HannibalThe use of shadow with bold patterns means there are moments like this one in the season 1 finale where the only detail visible is Hannibal’s striking tie and grey shirt. He kind of looks like a floating head coming out of the darkness.

Hannibal 1.13 BurberryThis moment also comes from the finale as Hannibal visits Will in his new ‘home’ and the brown Burberry London coat (thanks Wear the Rude for the heads up) is part of the rich brown trend that Hannibal wears throughout the first season. Hannibal is littered with out of the shadows moments and this shot is framed as if Hannibal is the emerging victor.

Hannibal 1.10 kill suitHannibal even has what looks like a custom kill suit and when you have clothes as luxurious as Hannibal you don’t want them getting ruined by a spot of blood. There’s also the evidence factor of course.

Hannibal 1.09 Alana and AbigailThe color scheme on Hannibal is as precise as Hannibal’s suits and there’s one character who wears both bold tones and a whole lot of pattern and that’s Alana Bloom. I’d argue that Alana is the heart of the show as she is the only person who is looking out for Will’s best interests all of the time – in the pilot she talks about the dangers of putting Will in the field as he might get too close and this is exactly what happens.

Hannibal 1.09 AlanaThe variety of prints Alana wears could represent her confused romantic feelings towards Will; she wants to be honest with him and lets him know in the scene above that she can’t have an affair with him while he is this unstable. Whereas both Hannibal and Jack will manipulate Will to get what they desire, Alana is suppressing her desires for the good of Will.

Hannibal 1.08 Will and AlanaThis is the nearest Will gets to rom-com set up and for once his demeanor is only reading at 30% troubled. Part of this is the company and Will takes the step in “Fromage” to get the girl. While this doesn’t entirely pan out – this is Hannibal and not a sitcom after all – if Will does get better there’s a chance these two kids could give it a go. While a lot of their interactions are bathed in darkness in lecture halls and interrogation rooms, the lighting in this open field scene gives a glow of hope. Will is dressed in his outdoor wear and he’s far removed from his usual work attire, the beanie is a win for him. Alana’s wine colored coat and patterned scarf maintain both her signature style and palette.

Hannibal 1.13 orange jumpsuitFrom light to dark and all color has been saturated from this scene except for Will’s jumpsuit and Alana’s multicolored Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress. This scene contains one of my favorite exchanges as Will tells Alana “I could use a good scream. I can feel one perched under my chin… I’m afraid that if I started, I wouldn’t be able to stop.” Control is a big element of Hannibal; Will thinks he losing all of his whereas characters like Hannibal and Alana have a full sense of who they are and their working boundaries. This is why they are the two characters who wear pattern and prints throughout the first season. Alana gets bonus bright colors because she wears her emotions on her sleeve.

Hannibal 1.01 Will GrahamWill wears red and plaid in the pilot but as the season progresses all color drains from his wardrobe and it’s pretty much all grey. At a push some earthy tones pop up, but Will’s costuming is all for practical and functional reasons. There’s nothing flamboyant and he even uses his glasses as prop to hide his eyes from the world.

Hannibal 1.02 FreddieNot afraid to make an impression is Freddie Lounds and this all scarlet ensemble dares to clash with her red hair and the walls of Hannibal’s waiting room. Freddie is essentially one of the many devils of Hannibal and like Hannibal himself she likes to manipulate dangerous situations to see how it impacts the outcome.

Hannibal is far more than just another antihero/murder venture and it is elevated beyond these stale factors thanks to the meticulous details in the writing, acting and all facets of the production design including the incredible costuming.

Best of TV Costuming 2013: Revolutionary Styling of Sleepy Hollow’s Ichabod Crane

Continuing TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2013″ costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items that we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking, we want to look at this year’s TV through the prism of costume.

One of 2013’s breakout hits is Sleepy Hollow and it has become a “Look of the Week” regular. The storytelling is fast paced and it delivers episodes soaked in crazy with a big side helping of heart as Ichabod adjusts to his 21st century setting. Ichabod Crane’s present day costuming has been called into question and I want to look at why it makes sense for him to still be in his Revolutionary threads.

Sleepy Hollow baseballSuspending disbelief is something we constantly have to do when watching TV; whether it is because a headless horseman is roaming the streets or that a man who died in the past wakes up over 300 years later. The line is apparently drawn when it comes to what Ichabod is wearing in the present and why he would still be wearing the clothes he woke up in.

Aesthetically, if Ichabod had undergone a makeover and was now dressed in jeans and t-shirt he would lose part of the visual ‘fish out of water’ element; he’d look like a generic hot dude solving mystical problems. The late 18th century garb is a constant reminder that Ichabod is not of this time. There are other cues of course like his issues with computers and his disgust at historical inaccuracies that are being taught and these are used sparingly is from.

102SH_101_0552.jpgFlashbacks show Ichabod’s uniform in its natural habitat if you will and within this part of the story he is far from being a stranger in a strange land. Thanks to battle conditions he still looks somewhat rugged, but there is a more polished quality to the costuming as it is being worn in its original setting.

Sleepy Hollow red coatWe also get to see Ichabod in his original red coat before he defected and this is a rather jarring experience as the blue is a constant part of the Ichabod that we see in the past and present. Red is used sparingly in Sleepy Hollow and generally means the side of evil and this is why it looks so alien on Ichabod. This is Ichabod Crane at his most polished and the tricorn hat adds distinction to this look, even if we associate the color red with all things diabolical.

The pilot episode shows Ichabod washing his clothes in a sink and recently Tom Mison joked to TV Line “Would you like to see him maybe at the Laundromat, just sitting on a bench in his 18th-century pants? That would be nice. One of Abbie’s bathrobes and a face pack – watching High School Musical. Just make a weekend of it, me and Abbie!” Don’t get me wrong, I do want to see that and all potential makeover montages, however the Revolutionary attire is part of what makes Ichabod who he is. It’s a tangible part of his past and it’s one of the only physical reminders of who he is and where he came from. There’s the question of letting go and it would probably be considered an unhealthy attachment if the present wasn’t so strongly connected to the past through purgatory and Katrina. The world is a very different place for Ichabod upon his return and to maintain a sense of self and identity his clothing acts as a tether.

Masters of Sex 1.12 “Manhigh” Costume Review: Reaching for the Stars

The first season of Masters of Sex uses space exploration as mirror to the pioneering research occurring in exam room 5; Bill and Virginia want to know everything about the act that can create life, whereas the notion of space travel is looking at life beyond Earth. Both include scary prospects and the potential to reveal things that could change the way we live, but only one of these is on prime time while the grand unveiling of the other is met with horror and aversion.

Ane Crabtree’s costume design for the whole of the first season has been tremendous and adds another layer to the storytelling as well as influencing my own sweater purchases. Each character has their own signature style and this reflects not only their attitudes towards sex, but also shows there is a lot more to this era than being buttoned up.

Masters of Sex 1.12 BillThe look of Bill Masters has been consistent throughout and there have only been a few occasions where he hasn’t been in his standard bow tie, suspenders and jacket attire. This is Bill’s uniform and it gives the impression of tradition, but the small polka dot detail on his bow tie hints at something slightly less repressed. Over the season we have seen Bill loosen up in private; his public demeanor is still pretty much the uptight dude that we met in the pilot. In the final scene Bill doesn’t cover Virginia’s eyes as he did last time he choked up and he openly admits that he needs her; I don’t think Bill has ever admitted that he needs someone other than himself. Bill is making that all important grand gesture.

Masters of Sex 1.12 Incredulous BillA slightly different bow tie/shirt combo (polka dots and check) and he’s pulling his best incredulous face. Bill throws himself under the bus to protect Barton’s job and says “Fuck them” in the process. The one thing he remains blind to is Libby, despite her attempts to be part of the project he is so passionate about.

Masters of Sex 1.12 dinner no showThe Masters home has never looked more lonely and cramped all at once as not a single person turns up to the post lecture dinner party celebration. Libby asks Bill who the woman in the video is and tells him other people think it is Virginia. Bill denies this without ever saying that it isn’t Virginia, he simply leads Libby’s questioning to get her to come to that conclusion.

Masters of sex 1.12 Virginia and JaneIn an ugly exchange one of the male doctors (the same doctor who raised his Martini glass to the notion that size doesn’t matter) tells Virginia that it was more of her than he needed to see in the presentation.  Both Jane and Virginia are appalled at this accusation and it doesn’t matter that we know it was Virginia, what matters is that as soon as it turned to female sexuality the attitude changed from frat house to nunnery. Jane is in the bold yellow we have come to associate her with and despite the reception to the study, she isn’t going to change who she is nor fade into the background in muted tones. Virginia has favored dark colors throughout the season, but color has all but disappeared since the time she started sleeping with Bill (except in his fantasy version of her last week).

Masters of Sex 1.12 Virginia close upThis close up comes after the presentation has been shut down during the provocative Virginia film. Virginia marches to the elevator and as with The Good WifeMasters of Sex has used this space for moments of escape (as with Margaret Scully in “Brave New World“), to show the disconnect between Bill and Virginia last week and as a place where Lillian attempted to get more money for her study. Here it looks like Virginia has been punched in the stomach or as if she’s going to throw up.

Masters of Sex 1.12 Virginia collarHere’s another shot from the same scene as I want to highlight the collar detail and the bold white lapels of this dress as they cross over each other on the back. Pretty much all of Virginia’s work clothes are smart and chic; embellished collars are incredibly popular during this time period and Virginia always appears to be one step ahead of the other ladies who work at the hospital. Virginia’s time working as a singer in a variety of music halls definitely impacts her costuming choices.

Masters of Sex 1.12 Lester and JaneI’ve already mentioned the yellow of Jane’s post presentation outfit and even though she isn’t going to lose her golden glow because of the reaction to the study she’s still embarrassed by how much of her has been aired in public, particularly as everyone is calling it dirty. Jane has been instrumental throughout the study and she thinks that her vaginal walls have brought down the whole kingdom. Lester does a good job of reassuring this isn’t the case and she should also remember her words to Bill earlier “It was just the insecure men who didn’t want to hear about how women are you know, sexually superior.” This statement really gets the heart and hypocrisy of the matter and it looks likes the Chancellor et al are similar to the MPAA.

Masters of Sex 1.12 LesterThe Lester/Jane relationship is very sweet and Lester’s earthy tones compliment the sunny disposition of Jane’s predominantly yellow wardrobe. Lester’s concern for how much masturbation is too much leads to one of the funniest lines of the season with Bill telling him “I can spot a statistically average masturbator from a mile away.” That’s a special skill to put on your resume now you’re out of a job Bill.

Masters of Sex 1.12 AustinAustin propositions Jane as they discuss how the study started with them. Austin comes across as confident (even though we know he has had performance issues in the past) and he’s suave whereas Lester is awkward. Costume wise they are incredibly different with Lester’s sweater vests and glasses and Austin’s well tailored expensive suits. Lester is the one who ends up getting a smooch and he’s definitely more relationship material as I can see Austin coasting from woman to woman without ever being truly satisfied.

Masters of Sex 1.12 Libby and JaneThe Libby/Jane working partnership continues as they sort out handouts, Martinis and canapés. Libby is dressed predominantly in baby blue this week and this is yet another beautiful maternity dress. As I have previously mentioned, Libby’s character progression from housewife to now has been exciting to watch as she has become so much more than the lazy option of the nagging housewife.

Masters of Sex 1.12 Libby baby blueIn an even lighter baby blue ensemble Libby is boxing up supplies for the Urban League and this points again to Libby as non-prejudicial. Libby goes into labor in this scene, as they can’t get hold of Bill and the baby is coming fast there’s no option but to take Libby to a different and predominantly African American hospital. This the second time this season in which Libby has gone to a different hospital accompanied by an African American and the main thing this is suggesting is that Libby is not a racist; the pilot episode touched on racial prejudice in Bill’s hospital and I wonder if season 2 is going to deal more with Civil Rights beyond this surface level next year. The giant white lapels on this woman’s dress mirror Virginia’s, showing that it’s a popular style, just not necessarily one that Virginia’s co-workers share.

Masters of Sex 1.12 Libby babyLibby is perfectly content after giving birth to a baby boy (as the blue blanket suggests) and she turns down the offer to call Bill right away; the conception was a solo effort (with the aid of Ethan) and the birth mirrors Bill’s absent role so far. The writers have altered the timeline of the Masters’ children for dramatic purposes and as we go forward the relationship between Bill and Libby is going to shift; will Libby fight for their marriage or is this child enough for her?

Masters of Sex 1.12 Lillian lunchWhat is enough for Lillian with her research? She attempts a different strategy to try and get more funding; this time there’s no awkward flirty banter and instead Lillian goes in hard. The result is still the same and she comes away empty handed. Lillian’s clothes are still rigid and functional and most women don’t want to be seen by a female OB/GYN despite Lillian’s attempts to keep her gender out of her performance as a doctor.

Masters of Sex 1.12 Dr DePaulOn two separate occasions we see Lillian taking off her lab coat – the first is prior to the lunch where she gets no funding and the second comes as Virginia suggests a different approach. Virginia thinks that Lillian needs to look beyond Pap smears; she needs to aim big to get the money she requires. At first Virginia suggests breast cancer, followed by the contraceptive pill. Virginia does her homework (it’s how she knew about the Pap smear when she first met Lillian) and the contraceptive pill is going to revolutionize medicine for women. Spoiler alert it doesn’t go on the market until 1960 and yet I can see this linking into Lillian’s work next season. This is if Lillian is still around and I really hope she is as Julianne Nicholson has brought something special to this season.

Masters of Sex 1.12 MargaretAllison Janney is another Masters of Sex MVP and in the season finale she confronts Barton regarding his sexuality and later visits the doctor who is going to ‘cure’ him. There are similarities between Margaret Scully and Libby Masters in their marital situations –  Bill isn’t gay, but he doesn’t love his wife in a sexual way – and this is reflected in their costuming as Margaret also wears baby blue this week. This is yet another beautiful and ornate broach in the Margaret Scully collection, rivaling The Good Wife’s Diane Lockhart.

Masters of Sex 1.12 closetBarton essentially steps out of his closet when Margaret confronts him about his sexual preference by using a headline in the paper as a segue. It’s a frank and honest chat; this surprised me considering how long Barton has been keeping it a secret (around 40 years) and it’s pretty calm and collected at first. Margaret explodes due to how long Barton has known he has feelings for men and she accuses him of stealing time from her. It’s an incredibly complex and heartbreaking scenario, even more so when Margaret hears what options are available to stop Barton feeling this way towards men.

Masters of Sex 1.12 Barton and MagaretThe shot above comes from the moment where Margaret tells Barton to not have electro shock therapy as the risks far outweigh what it might do. The memories that she mentions are not grand life altering ones, but small moments that add to their 30 years together and she doesn’t want to lose that. Barton tells her he won’t go through with it and this is yet another lie. It’s a stunning composition as Margaret is in the light of the bedside lamp and Baton is in darkness as they embrace on the bed they haven’t shared for years.

Masters of Sex 1.12 Bill prepThis is another moment that uses a bold light to enhance the framing of a character; this time from a natural source as Bill prepares to go out and make his presentation. In this moment he is still in darkness and he’s about to unleash his work on the world.

Masters of Sex 1.12 EthanEthan spends most of the episode away in California where he is having a job interview. It’s all going well between Virginia and Ethan and he even proposes to her in this scene while he is staring at the ocean in sun kissed California. This is in contrast to the rain soaked St. Louis, Missouri and the declaration that Bill makes in person. Ethan has definitely changed from the jerk we met in the pilot and he is great with Virginia’s kids and yet he can’t offer the stars in the same way Bill can.

The envelope full of money was Bill’s ill judged reaction to his guilt induced by Libby’s pregnancy and in this final scene of season 1, Bill emotionally undresses and lays out the truth. It’s not the work Bill can’t live without, it’s Virginia. So that’s not one but two propositions for Virginia as we end season 1 and while it’s easy to guess which way she will lean, the episode overall is a very satisfactory resolution to an excellent first season.
