Best of the Golden Globes 2016 Red Carpet: Black and White

11 Jan

Black and white frocks don’t have to be the safe choice as this next collection of Golden Globes 2016 red carpet highlights demonstrate.

Laverne CoxLaverne Cox is gasp worthy in Elizabeth Kennedy serving all levels of drama from her gown to her makeup.

Emilia ClarkeSO MANY CAPES THIS YEAR! All caps needed because Emilia Clarke’s Valentino gown is a vampy turn I did not expect from her.

Saoirse RonanAnd for a softer caped turn we have Saoirse Ronan in ethereal Yves Saint Laurent couture.

Lady GagaOne of the ‘surprising not so surprising’ wins of the evening came from Lady Gaga (who thanked Matt Bomer first because who wouldn’t?) and she looks like a movie star from the 50s in custom Atelier Versace.

Alicia VikanderI know some were underwhelmed by Alicia Vikander’s apron style pleated Louis Vuitton, but I am so here for it as it matches her general super chill vibe. And I think she will go big at the Oscars.

Caitriona BalfeThis Alexander McQueen is a little witchy boudoir from Caitriona Balfe, but I am also enjoying this twist on a black gown.

Taraji P. HensonA train looks incredible, but it can also cause logistical problems with people standing on it as Taraji P. Henson found out when she went up to collect Best Actress; so I can see why she changed out of this Stella McCartney wonder for the after parties. It looks incredible here as she poses with her Golden Globe.

Kirsten DunstValentino featured big on our end of yearLook of the Week” posts and this is another excellent frock from this fashion house with Kirsten Dunst going full cleav. It is a shame she didn’t win for her Fargo role, but hopefully another project in the future will mean more Dunst on TV.

Best of the Pre-Golden Globes Parties

10 Jan

A prelude to the main event tonight and two more daytime shindigs with the BAFTA awards season tea (with actual tea and for some reason a no selfie policy) and the 2016 Film Independent Filmmaker Grant and Spirit Award Nominees Brunch. Not quite living up to the sartorial offerings from the AFI Awards luncheon on Friday and this was a big case of scroll down nightmare when going through the photos; however there are still several outfits to love, some I am still not sure about and dudes in suits that are not black.

Alicia VikanderBy far my favorite look from the day and Alicia Vikander is high up on the most anticipated list for Golden Globes dresses tonight. This red striped Altuzarra is such a breath of fresh air much like most of her red carpet choices.

Caitriona BalfeAlso going for something simple and cool is Caitriona Balfe in a belted tuxedo inspired LBD (with pockets!). Also reminding me that yep, I still need to get back on the Outlander watch.

Nathalie EmmanuelNathalie Emmanuel edges towards maybe too casual, but also this is a really cute outfit so I’m gonna say it is more than fine. Still on the lookout for the perfect leather pleated skirt and this one combined with the white tee fits this description. The dash of pattern on her silk headband and bag also help make this outfit pop.

Also this is all kinds of lovely.

Mark RuffaloDigging the suit and grey sweater look on Mark Ruffalo.

Michael ShannonThe jacket is maybe a tad too short, but I really like what Michael Shannon is going for here.

Nyle ANTMOh hey there Nyle! I really wanted you to win ANTM and yet I still haven’t watched the final episode (thanks Twitter spoiler for that). Glad to see him on the red carpet circuit and following on from Ryan Gosling wearing something from the brown palette. Priyanka ChopraThis is one of two dresses that I can’t quite work out if I like or not and there is so much going on with Priyanka Chopra’s Alex Perry frock (sounding a lot like Alex Parrish – her Quantico character). Maybe the top half should be stick to one black texture and that would make it seem less chaotic. Her face looks really great though.

Brie Larson and Saoirse Ronan are two more names on our most anticipated list for tonight and while I wasn’t enamored by either frock choice at this BAFTA event, this photo I adore.

Rooney MaraThe second of the ‘on the fence’ frocks and Rooney Mara wore this to both the Film Independent Spirit Award brunch and the BAFTA tea – wearing the same thing to two events when you are attending this many is beyond fine in my eyes – and it is definitely very Rooney Mara in both color scheme and style. Definitely edging closer to love than eh.

Rami MalekYesterday I hit the BIG REVEAL episode of Mr Robot and while I was already aware of part of the twist, the execution and Rami Malek’s performance delivered and it didn’t really matter that I had been spoiled. Malek continues to go for buttoned up sans tie and I am so into this style choice on him. It is also nice to see him out of Elliot’s trademark hoodie.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

23 Oct

The red carpet is awash with bold looks this week from PaleyFest, the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards and a variety of other events delivering sartorial highs.

Tatiana MaslanyAs promised here is Tatiana Maslany at the Orphan Black PaleyFest panel wearing a fabulous Roksanda ruffled jumpsuit with color clashing red pumps. This is one way to brighten up a classic look with excellent results.

Diane Kruger and Zachary QuintoAnother jumpsuit twist with Diane Kruger sporting a quilted look from the Balmain x H&M collection event. I have a feeling this might be a Magical Fashion Unicorn situation with Kruger and it falls into my own personal ‘jumpsuits are awkward’ category. Very much into Zachary Quinto’s chevron sweater and they look like they’re attending a super hip party in the 1970s, which might include a bowl of keys.

Laverne CoxA gold pleated sparkly treat from Laverne Cox wearing Alice + Olivia at the One Life/Live Them event and this is getting added to the festive party ideas list. It was announced this week that Cox is going to star in the new Rocky Horror Picture Show TV remake and I am suddenly more interested in this project.

Olivia WildeTake two for Roksanda this week and another signature color blocking delight. Olivia Wilde also choose to give the outfit an extra pop of wow with red pumps; she balances the look out by opting for minimalist makeup and accessories at The Headstrong Project’s 3rd annual Word of War event in New York.

Ashley MadekweNow entering the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards section kicking off with Ashley Madekwe in Calvin Klein Collection teaming leather with what looks like a sweater and I am so here for this mix of edgy and comfy. So happy sweater season is firmly here.

Alicia VikanderAlicia Vikander is serving up casual cool in, you guessed it Louis Vuitton – the current print ad campaign is fabulous – and this is one fashion partnership I can’t get enough of. And now I’m left wondering what Raf Simons departure will do in regards to JLaw and the HUGE final Hunger Games press tour, which is fast approaching.

Ahna O'ReillyPow! Ahna O’Reilly in what would be an ideal (if a little on the nose) dress for something like Comic-Con and it also works like a super fun charm at this celebratory event.

America FerreraRed shoes are so on point this week with America Ferrera pairing her patent Kurt Geiger pumps with electric blue Novis and all these bright and bold “Out of the Box” looks have put me in a wonderful mood.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

24 Sep

The Emmys are over for another year – for a plethora of awards dress and ladysuits coverage head here – and this “Out of the Box” is all about everything else that has been going on this week with chat show appearances, movie premieres and London Fashion Week. September continues to be the busiest of fashion months and we still can’t get enough.

Lupita Nyong'o ColbertLupita Nyong’o looks super cool in a pinstripe Alessandra Rich jumpsuit on her way into The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last Friday. The Paul Andrews gold pumps, sunglasses and Zac Posen bag enhance the chic factor even further and Lupita proves once again that she can work both magazine editorials and IRL fashion moments.

Kerry WashingtonGoing for something effortless after a striking Emmy gown is Kerry Washington at Jimmy Kimmel Live! (she wore something different on the show) wearing Mother Denim jeans, Everlane shoes and a Joie top. Choosing Olivia Pope’s favorite bag brand with Prada, but completely separating herself from this character with Miu Miu tortoiseshell sunglasses and neon pink lip color (my personal favorite is Hourglass).

Emily BluntFall is here but that doesn’t mean all things colorful should be packed away, especially when attending the San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain where it isn’t quite sweater weather. Emily Blunt is a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite for so many reasons and one of those is her penchant for bold sartorial choices. At this Sicario photocall she wears bright pink Jimmy Choo sandals with an even more colorful Jonathan Saunders matching striped top and skirt.

Michelle WilliamsThe Louis Vuitton Series 3 exhibition launched as part of London Fashion Week with many stars attending the event. Michelle Williams is one of the faces of this brand – her print ads are always a highlight – and unlike some other celeb/designer pairings this one is a perfect fit; building on Williams’ twee sensibilities and giving her an edge. Just look at those boots.

Alicia VikanderAlicia Vikander is a more recent addition to the Louis Vuitton brand and she is already killing it; from custom gowns to more casual affairs. This is another glam, but relaxed take and I have a feeling we are going to see Vikander in Louis Vuitton a lot come awards season.

Clemence PoesyA sequin block color sweater for Clémence Poésy and this Louis Vuitton event is giving me such a hankering for a new pair of boots.
Claire DanesFor all we make of Claire Danes and her amazing cry face, she also has a really great laugh face. Basically she is adept at showing emotion and the one she typically has to do with the characters she portrays is anguish. Yesterday Danes got to show the other side when she was honored with a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Oscar de la Renta frock she wore is ideal for a daytime dress-up event; super pretty and relaxed.

Claire Danes starP.S. Yes I yelped when I saw Bess Armstrong standing proud next to her one-time onscreen daughter. I knew Patty and Angela would be fine in the end. See also My So-Called Life creator Winnie Holzman standing on the other side of Danes. Oh hey Homeland’s Alex Gansa, you are fine too (but part of me really wishes it was another MSCL star like Devon Odessa, A.J. Langer or Wilson Cruz).

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

18 Sep

The September event avalanche continues and this week we have a pretty even split between New York Fashion Week and the Toronto Film Festival with a dash of magazine cover beauties to end things on.

Samira Wiley Milly showMalin Akerman, Samira Wiley and Solange are pretty in pink at the Milly by Michelle Smith runway show with bold colors taking this front row by storm. Last week Wiley’s stunning Christian Siriano campaign was unveiled and the OITNB ladies have been celebrating NYFW on and off their set.

Christina Hendricks Naeem KhanIt looks like Kat Graham is contemplating resting her head on the shoulder of Christina Hendricks and I don’t blame her. This is a whole lot of splendid pattern wearing at Naeem Khan with Ashley Greene’s silver stripe pants giving off a David Bowie vibe and I am so here for that. Bonus red lipstick points for Christina Hendricks for a fantastic crimson shade.

Kiernan Shipka and Christina RicciAt the Highline Coach show Kiernan Shipka wears a cute floral blouse showing once again that this brand is perfect for her and Christina Ricci’s sheepskin vest from the Fall 15 collection is something I would very much like in my wardrobe for when it finally gets a bit colder.Danielle PanabakerOn Instagram Danielle Panabaker said she was “feeling very Sex and the City” in this Monse ensemble at the Monse presentation and it looks like a whole lot of Carrie in the skirt with some Charlotte on top.

Dianna AgronMarc Jacobs closed out NYFW with a decadent affair at the Ziegfeld Theater with concessions, a special Playbill and plenty of fabulous clothes. Dianna Agron went with this theme in the form of her Olympia Le-Tan Red Shoes clutch and while her floral frock is really pretty; it is this clutch that I can’t stop looking at.

Diane Kruger TIFFSwitching out Venice for Toronto and in a sea of amazing Diane Kruger looks this sparkly Chanel Couture dress might be my current favorite. Pairing it with red satin Giuseppe Zanotti sandals gives a strong pop of color and this is an all round delight from a TV Ate My Wardrobe style queen.

Diane and Pacey TIFFThe second Diane Kruger ensemble doesn’t quite pack the same punch but I’m here for the sparkles, strappy sandals and her oh so handsome date. And Kruger’s hangover confession on Instagram has me both chuckling and wishing I could pull something like this together after a heavy night.

Elisabeth MossThis shade of green is fantastic on Elisabeth Moss and she has been killing it on the red carpet at TIFF. The extra oomph from the blue pumps rather than going for safe beige makes me so happy.

Alicia VikanderAt the HFPA/InStyle TIFF party Alicia Vikander wore all Louis Vuitton (she is one of the new faces of the brand after all) and does a good job of showing why in a studded tweed frock. Vikander is probably going to be gracing a lot of red carpets and award shows; something I am beyond fine with because she is both a very fine actress and her sartorial risk taking means we shouldn’t get bored of her by the time the Oscars roll around.

Clemence PoseyClémence Poésy looking cool as fuck in an outfit that is pure relaxed chic.

Empire THREmpire won’t be winning Best Drama at the Emmys this weekend after a somewhat surprising nomination snub, but they are slaying the cover of The Hollywood Reporter and Taraji P. Henson has a strong chance of getting a Cookie win. Somehow Jussie Smollet is pulling off the very shiny suit he has been given and this is such a fun colorful image with Taraji rightly drawing focus.

Lupita VogueGet ready for so much Lupita Nyong’o in the coming months and December is going to be such a good red carpet month with the Star Wars press tour and all the pre-awards posturing. This Vogue cover is so striking and I’m so glad they’ve gone with such a plain background because Lupita really shines. The gold Valentino Haute Couture gown is spectacular as is the rest of the photo shoot.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

11 Sep

The busy that is September becomes all too clear in this week’s Out of the Box as we have fabulous outfits from a variety of events including film festivals, magazine covers, a fashion campaign, New York Fashion Week, film premieres and a profile of a star from a returning show.

Lizzy CaplanStunning from Lizzy Caplan in ultimate pattern clashing Mary Katrantzou and she pushes the fashion envelope once again at a Sleeping With Other People screening. And it also bears repeating that her lack of Emmy nomination means one less showstopping moment. Let’s enjoy her breathtaking Donna Karan Atelier gown from last year instead.

Samira WileyNew York Fashion Week started yesterday so expect plenty of coverage in the coming days and one piece of fashion news that has already caused woots of joy comes courtesy of the new face of Christian Siriano; Orange is the New Black’s Samira Wiley looks incredible in this campaign.

Aya Cash ComplexYou’re the Worst returned this week and I pretty much had a giant grin plastered across my face throughout the episode. Which is pretty much the same expression the Aya Cash Complex shoot gave me and this cobalt sequin collared dress number coupled with a flawless sunglasses game (much like her character’s) and amazing red lip color is giving me so much life. The rest of the photos and interview are just as good including her description of Gretchen and Jimmy’s relationship:

“They’re only one representation of a relationship. The idea that one relationship or one show can represent all of a culture is just not realistic. But I do think there’s a cynicism in our generation. I actually think that cynicism is what makes it so romantic.”

Or as Jimmy might put it “Look, we’re not against sweater people. We’re not protesting sweater people’s right to exist. We just choose not to be them, because they remind us of encroaching death.”

IMG_2296The Shondaland magazine takeover continues with Essence and more sequin pretty for “Out of the Box” this week with Kerry Washington delivering another great cover.

Alicia VikanderThis is one dress I keep going back and forth on ultimately landing in the love it camp and Alicia Vikander’s custom Louis Vuitton peasant gown is a very different look for the Venice Film Festival red carpet and she’s pulling off the drama. Considering how many films she is in this year and that some of them have awards written all over them I am glad she is such a fashion risk taker.

Birgitte Hjort SorensenBirgitte Hjort Sørensen is about to do the all 70s thing in HBO’s Vinyl so it is only appropriate that she shows up to NY Mag and The Cut’s NYFW party sporting some very 70s very wide legged pants. This decade has been providing runway inspiration throughout 2015 and it will be interesting to see if it is still an influence this week. And I am so ready for Sørensen to be a huge star.
