The Wish List: Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Gina’s Sweaters

13 Feb

It looks like we have a rival to April Ludgate as the character whose wardrobe we covet the most and the character in question comes from another Mike Schur co-created show as Chelsea Peretti’s Gina adds another couple of sweaters to the wish list she is already on. Both the new wish list additions feature on the recent episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and while I probably wouldn’t wear the Floorgasm attire, Gina is quickly turning into a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite.

Gina B99First up this lightning bolt sweater adds weather whimsy to your outfit and it’s from A.L.C. Plus it looks great with red pants if you want to brave the colored pants thing – and you really should – mustard pants are what I’m currently after (not to be worn with the mustard hoodie when I eventually find the perfect one). Gina’s wearing really fantastic lipstick too and it adds another pop of color to this ensemble.

Gina Brooklyn Nine Nine sweaterThis diamond sweater is from J. Crew and it’s cashmere so not only does it look awesome, it also feels incredible. An itchy sweater is terrible no matter how fantastic it looks and you won’t have that problem here. More great lip color too. And Gina’s right, she does have great hair.

Happy Galentine’s Day!

13 Feb

“What’s Galentine’s Day? Oh it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home and we come and kick it breakfast style. Ladies celebrating ladies”

Galentine's DayIt might be a fictional holiday courtesy of Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation, but Galentine’s Day is something TV Ate My Wardrobe fully supports. Celebrating lady friends AND with breakfast food; who wouldn’t want that?! Make sure to bring an intricate art and crafts project or at least some sort of gift certificate. Failing that, just make sure there are waffles and plenty of whipped cream.

April Galentine's DayAnn leaving Pawnee has left a big beautiful (insert your own choice here) hole in Leslie’s BFF heart and I’m disappointed we didn’t get one final Galentine’s Day before she departed. I’m going to miss this pairing as it’s one of my favorite TV female friendships and it’s one that didn’t suffer from the usual cliches. Instead of being sad here is a supercut of all the best Leslie and Ann moments – yes it’s over 25 minutes long and it’s all good.

I know this scene doesn’t come from a Galentine’s Day episode, however it captures everything I love about the lady friendships on Parks and Recreation and as April testifies “everyone know this song, it’s amazing.” Yes, yes it is.

Be sure to check out the Galentine’s Day Google Hangout being hosted by Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls at the Party today.

Dresses for New Girl’s Jess from Oscar de la Renta’s NYFW Fall 2014 Collection

12 Feb

This is a sequel of sorts to the September New York Fashion Week Oscar de la Renta runway show which featured polka dot and floral gowns that we thought would be perfect for Jess from New Girl. Both of these two patterns are once again included in the fall 2014 Oscar de la Renta’s collection and we’ve got Jess vibes all over again.

Some of these choices are more overtly Jess and while she tends to prefer a ’50s silhouette, the bubble skirt would be a fun and not all that crazy departure for this character and cobalt blue is a fantastic color on her. Both the polka dot and dramatic pink skirted gowns are probably not going to fit in with the styling on New Girl unless they get invited to another fancy pants party, so this is the ultimate in fantasy costuming. I could see Zooey Deschanel wearing either on an awards show red carpet.

New Girl 3.16 “Sister” Review: “A Girl Who Looks Like me, but with Chaos in her Eyes”

12 Feb

Extending Jess’ immediate family on New Girl means bringing in Abby; a previously unseen (and unmentioned?) older sister who just happens to be the opposite of Jess. This isn’t particularly revolutionary of course and sitcoms love to do this type of storyline, but it ends up being the strongest aspect in a chaotic episode. Casting Linda Cardellini as Abby is an instant way to make me forgive retconning of this kind and I am very glad that she didn’t end the episode on a plane to Portland. This is one of those episodes where the three stories don’t really mesh even with some connecting elements and so we returned to the disjointed feeling that the first half of this season suffered from.

NG_ep316-sc16_S0A5849So let’s start with the good and everything about Jess and Abby’s conversation about their mom (oh hey Jamie Lee Curtis!) over wine made me practically giddy to have Cardellini playing Abby.* In a short time it is easy to believe these two are sisters as there is strong chemistry between Deschanel and Cardellini. This scene is undercut with sadness from both characters and their relationship dynamic is clearly mapped out; Jess has always been seen as the ‘perfect baby’ daughter and Abby is the delinquent. Even with these fundamental differences they can both laugh about their mother’s tiny blue denim backpack. It’s all going rather smoothly until Abby sees a text from Cece asking if she has ruined everything yet. Abby ends up pulling a move that is expected and somehow Jess tracks her down to a hotel (via her mom’s credit card? Ok we’ll go with that) and this leads to an honest conversation between the pair and Jess doesn’t sugarcoat it reinforcing the notion that Abby does have a habit of ruining everything.

If New Girl is about this second phase of growing up when you hit your late 20s/early 30s then Abby is one step behind Jess et al as she’s still acting like a rebellious teenager. Moving back to Portland to live with their mother appears to be her only option at this point and this feels like failure to Abby. As we saw recently in “Birthday” Jess has a habit of forming expectations that people can’t meet and with her sister it comes across as the opposite; she expects her to fuck up which is why she doesn’t want her to meet Nick. Plus it seems like all of the Day women have a thing for him.

Jess has met Nick’s family and it’s a surprise to him that she wouldn’t be comfortable with him knowing that she has a sister who says inappropriate things and has been in jail (this probably isn’t the first time she’s been in a cell). As with The Mindy Project’s Mindy, Jess tries the whole movie to real life idea just switch out rom-coms for The Parent Trap. Abby is something that doesn’t fit in with this idea of happy families and while Jess has accepted that her parents aren’t getting back together, prior to this episode she also didn’t want Nick to meet the black sheep of her family.

Unfortunately Nick took this as a sign that Jess was embarrassed of him, which couldn’t be further from the truth and this is one of the only connecting aspects of the episodes. Nick is tasked with being Schmidt’s wingman and their BFF status hasn’t been explored all that much since “Keaton.” Schmidt accuses Nick of only caring about Jess and Nick is determined to be a good friend; to be a good friend to Schmidt sometimes it involves smooching an old lady and getting punched in the face. The Schmidt/Nick dynamic delivers some of the episodes funnier moments and I’d liked to have seen more of them together hatching terrible schemes in this unusual dating arena.

The last time Jon Lovitz appeared as Rabbi Feiglin was back in “The Box” when Schmidt was at a creative low and while his joke telling was pretty funny, this aspect of the episode didn’t work for me. Thankfully the writers have worked out a lot of the Schmidt issues and unlike Nick I rather enjoyed his monologuing.

Winston now has a partner in crazy and I’m glad to see he’s still dating bus driver Bertie, even if the soup dinner party only exists as a reason to address the Cece and Coach non-relationship from another patchy episode “Longest Night Ever” – maybe this week feels so disjointed because they are referencing other episodes that have pacing/story problems. Like Cece I had forgotten about her brief tryst with Coach and it only gets brought up as they’re the only people who can make the “night lunch.” It ends in an attempt to recreate that great two hour make out session; instead they end up with a bad back and a broken tooth. Some things should only happen once.

So returning to the Abby of it all and as she is staying for an unspecified amount of time I think we can expect shenanigans or hijinks with a heart. I’m looking forward to exploring this relationship and how her presence in the loft will throw things into disarray. Seeing Jess challenged in this way will be fun, especially as Abby has a low tolerance for some of Jess’ quirks “If you a cappella sing at me one more time, I will rip that stupid little dress off you and shove it down your mouth.” P.S. Abby that houndstooth dress is super cute and I definitely want it, not that I just bought houndstooth bedding or anything.

“Sister” isn’t a great episode of New Girl and it’s the first misfire of 2014, however there is plenty to feel positive about and I’m happy Linda Cardellini gets to flex her comedic chops in at least one more episode.

*I’m a big Linda Cardellini fan and the first time I saw her on TV was not as Lindsay Weir in Freaks and Geeks (which I only watched for the first time relatively recently), but as Nurse Sam Taggart in E.R. and so this wild child past doesn’t seem all that out of the ordinary. Now I want to write a piece on the good girl/bad girl roles that Cardellini has played, with her most recent Mad Men stint straddling Catholic wife with Don Draper mistress.

Theory’s NYFW Fall 2014 Collection and Homeland’s Carrie Mathison

11 Feb

Claire Danes covered the January issue of Glamour magazine and mentioned that “Carrie wears a lot of Theory. That is her brand. She’s a Theory girl. It’s a lot of navy. A lot of navy.” Upon seeing Theory’s NYFW fall 2014 RTW collection we noticed several outfits that are very much the Carrie Mathison CIA uniform and here they are for your perusal.

Ok maybe Carrie wouldn’t wear some of the skirts (especially ones that are as sheer as this), but hey maybe she’ll want to try something new. The color palette favors the muted tones that Carrie prefers including the aforementioned navy.

Return to the ’90s with Tommy Hilfiger’s NYFW Fall 2014 Collection

11 Feb

Plaid, oversized sweaters, stripes and knits are all high on TV Ate My Wardrobe’s fall season wish list and as it’s still very much the weather for all of these things the Tommy Hilfiger fall RTW 2014 collection is on point. Yes we’re still highly anticipating the Zooey Deschanel/Tommy Hilfiger collaboration; however one needs a lot more sunshine than the other.

Throw in some ’90s nostalgia – I can’t see a tartan mini without thinking of Clueless’ Cher Horowitz – and it’s an instant hit here. We’ve recently been immersed in TV from our teen years; first with a My So-Called Life rewatch and currently with Felicity and all these sweaters are crying out for a college aged Keri Russell to wear them.

There is also a hint of April Ludgate (who else?) in this collection and it has the Tommy Hilfiger classic outdoors look. Shirt dresses and mini wool skirts that embrace plaid in bold colors feature throughout; just because the sky is grey doesn’t mean your clothes have to mirror this. If you really want to return to the ’90s there is a spaghetti strap dress that you could throw on a tee underneath – not that we’re really recommending this as this one trend that I don’t want to see reviving.

Here are our favorite pieces from the Tommy Hilfiger runway show and you might find your inner Angela Chase or Felicity Porter.

Diane von Furstenberg’s NYFW 2014 Fall Collection: Mix-and-Match Print for Hannibal’s Dr. Alana Bloom

10 Feb

Happy 40th Birthday to the Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress and Hannibal’s Dr Alana Bloom sported this iconic garment during its first season. The collection von Furstenberg debuted this weekend at New York Fashion Week is called Bohemian Wrapsody – full marks on the pun – and there are several signature DVF pieces that are very much part of the Alana Bloom look on Hannibal.

Caroline Dhavernas looks incredible in red and in terms of costume design on Hannibal it’s a color that is used sparingly, most likely to create a stronger impact when it comes to the crime scenes. Alana is one of the only characters that get to wear red (Freddie is another) and this is most noticeable in the finale after Will has been arrested. Red can symbolize a variety of conflicting and intense emotions – love, anger, passion, strength – with Alana it definitely lays on compassionate end of the scale and I consider her to be the heart of the show.

One other key component to Alana’s costuming is that it is ultra feminine and she almost exclusively wears skirts and dresses. Whether it is intentional or not, Alana is coded in season 1 in way that reflects a strong maternal role with both Will and Abigail – the whole ‘mother’ thing gets a bit fuzzy when you factor in the strong sexual attraction between Will and Alana – she’s a protector and there’s no ulterior motive to her actions. Alana’s costuming reflects this femininity and the DVF rosebud motif is on point with this factor, as are the mix-and-match prints which reflect the chaos of the Hannibal environment.

Below are 7 looks from Diane von Furstenberg’s fall 2014 RTW collection that I could see as part of Dr. Alana Bloom’s wardrobe. There are some other strong gold and star infused pieces from this runway show that will feature later in the week.

New York Fashion Week 2014: Day 1 and 2 Fantasy Costuming Round-up

8 Feb

It’s day 3 of New York Fashion Week and there’s already been runway shows galore. We thought we’d share some of our favorite looks so far from the fall 2014 collections and as the weather is still pretty terrible there’s a lot of knitwear and coats that look pretty enticing. What we’re going to do is some quick fire fantasy costuming from 10 different runway shows.

Kate SpadeJess wears a lot of Kate Spade on New Girl and the bow detail on this plaid coat is perfect for Ms. Day. As is the sparkly dress that is peaking out below it.

Kate Spade NYFWMindy doesn’t wear a lot of pants on The Mindy Project, but she does have an extensive collection of coats and this beautiful one from Kate Spade is very much in her bold color wheelhouse.

Kate Spade 2014It’s not 1950s vintage, but Kate Spade’s three-quarter length sleeve coat is very Virginia Johnson from Masters of Sex. The purse and gloves are heaven as are the brogues. The hat is super cute but maybe not for the Johnson look.

Charlotte Ronson 2014For Elizabeth Jennings when she is on some spy recon that might require a slight flash of leg on The Americans or this Charlotte Ronson skirt and sweater would probably be Britta’s idea of what a psychologist should wear on Community.

Creatures of Comfort 2014April from Parks and Recreation is all about the plaid and while I’m not sure if she’d be all that into the neckerchief, this Creatures of Comfort outfit is pretty April to me.

Nonoo 2014Scandal’s Abby has the best hair on TV (ok joint with Connie Britton) and her raven locks would look great with this dress from Nonoo and it is Scandal office appropriate.

NonooWhile I’m not loving the shiny Nonoo pants, this layered looking sweater is fantastic and is very Annie Edison on Community.

Tanya TaylorThis dress by Tanya Taylor screams Marnie from Girls – PS I hope she hooks up with Ray again on this week’s episode. I don’t know why I ship this couple but I do.

Rebecca MinkoffKate from Trophy Wife would look fantastic in this Rebecca Minkoff leather mini. The coat and blouse add a hint of office wear sophistication while still looking pretty cool. Alternatively this could be another Abby from Scandal outfit.

Rag & BoneRag & Bone are taking their cues from the ’90s and while this is very My So-Called Life I’m going to give this hooded sweater to Ilana on Broad City. I would switch the skirt for some short shorts.

Coach 2014Another April Ludgate outfit, this time from Coach.

CoachFlashback fantasy costuming with Coach and this would be ideal for Felicity Porter for her sophomore fall semester and we can pretend she doesn’t chop all her hair off on Felicity.

Peter Som 2014Olivia Pope loves a belted coat and this patterned Peter Som piece represents the chaos that surrounds her life on Scandal at the moment.

Peter SomAlana Bloom tends to wear a lot of pattern on Hannibal and this visually arresting Peter Som dress would look fantastic on her. The blurred floral imagery could mirror how uncertain things are going to get for this season as she works to prove that Will is innocent.

Tadashi ShojiMoving onto beautiful dresses with Tadashi Shoji and Mellie on Scandal always looks stunning in primary colors; it’s a strong contrast to the Olivia Pope neutral palette and this royal blue gown would look killer at a White House function.

Tadashi Shoji NYFWRed is one of Alicia Florrick’s power play costume colors and as we saw at the fancy soiree in season 4, Julianna Margulies looks as stunning in scarlet formal wear as she does in the courtroom on The Good Wife. This Tadashi Shoji dress would be a great addition to her closet.

Tadashi Shoji 2014One show that loves grand parties no matter what the theme or body count is The Vampire Diaries and the final of the three Tadashi Shoji beautiful gowns is so Elena (or Katherine). Basically Nina Dobrev should wear this.

Look out for more coverage of New York Fashion Week from TV Ate My Wardrobe.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

7 Feb

New York Fashion Week started yesterday and we will be covering that in all its glory next week, especially as most shows are taking a couple of weeks off for Winter Olympics. For this edition of “Out of the Box” we’re going to be taking a look at a couple of the red carpet events from this week before we cover both the runway shows (fantasy costuming ahoy!) and those attending.

Anna FarisThis is easily the sunniest red carpet I have seen for sometime and it makes sense that it’s for The Lego MovieIt helps that both Anna Faris and Chris Pratt have opted for darker attire otherwise we might get blinded and Faris’ gingham Tanya Taylor black strap crop top and skirt is perfect for this afternoon event. It might veer towards office wear if it was missing the crystal embellishments and you know if your office is cool with crop tops. It avoids that and it’s a super cute outfit for this premiere.

Natalie Dormer InStyle Roksanda IlincicNatalie Dormer covers up the recently shaved part of her head with a simple sweep of her hair – a more sophisticated comb over and while I would have loved to have seen a repeat of her SAG Awards hair styling, this is also pretty fantastic. The Roksanda Ilincic short sleeved dress is inspired by Josef Albers bold color-block artwork which is very much on point with art and fashion sharing a stage at the moment. It’s a really great look and the midi-length is appropriate for the InStyle pre-BAFTA “The Best of British Talent” party.

Brie Larson capeIt’s been a good week for Brie Larson as she not only features on the Vanity Fair Hollywood issue cover, but she was also honored at the 29th Santa Barbara International Film Festival. I really like Larson’s slightly different approach to the red carpet and this Louis Vuitton Resort 2014 ensemble is an instant winner thanks to the cape factor and I love the combination of yellow, green and blue tweed on the dress. While I think towering heels do add something to an outfit, I also understand the pain factor so I’m very much into the brogues that Larson is wearing. It’s relaxed, but still super stylish.

Diane Kruger Peter PilottoSo we’ve got one event/look from NYFW sneaking in and that’s Diane Kruger at the Peter Pilotto for Target launch party wearing one of the outfits from the collection and showing off the trademark color and pattern fusion. Getting Kruger to showcase this design with contrasting flowers in bold color and the black and white sleeves is good move, though I’m not entirely sure if I could pull this off. I’d definitely be willing to give it a go, but as I mentioned above I’d probably not do so well in the towering strappy pumps.

Hannibal Season 2 Trailer: “You’re not a Suspect. You’re the New Will Graham”

6 Feb

Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller asked “who’s ready for seconds?” over on Twitter and my hand pretty much shot up into the air. This new trailer (complete with a somewhat jarring movie style voiceover) expands on the idea that Hannibal is taking over Will’s spot as FBI consultant on the macabre cases. The new promo also features Gillian Anderson’s Dr. du Maurier and it was insinuated last season that she knew more about Hannibal than she was explicitly saying out loud; it looks like she might be one of the only people who isn’t fooled by Hannibal’s charms this season.

Hannibal season 2 groupThe male characters on the show are blinded by Hannibal’s charm and sophistication, sitting at his dinner table and enjoying whatever treats Hannibal has prepared for them (THE FOOD IS PEOPLE). This was the role that Will took on last year, he is now of course very aware of what Hannibal is capable of and he’s going to have a hard time of convincing people otherwise. Dr. Chilton has recovered enough from his non-elective surgery last year to discuss Will over food with Hannibal “He tells everyone that you are a monster.” Hannibal responds mockingly “Well in that case you’re dining with a psychopathic murderer.” It’s all very tongue in cheek (pun maybe sorta intended).

There’s more of the fight sequence that was teased in the first full trailer and seeing Hannibal shift from cool and reserved to cool and dangerous is unnerving and I can’t wait to see this sequence in full. The one person lacking in the trailer is Alana Bloom, though the first trailer revealed that she is part of this confrontation. Alana is very much on Team Will, but she’s also got a very long standing professional and personal relationship with Hannibal so I am intrigued to see what they have in store for her. As long as it’s not an untimely end.

Beauty and horror go hand in hand on Hannibal and the crime scenes are as complex as ever as there’s a brief shot of what appears to be a judge missing the top of his skull, set up to look like the scales of justice. Just because Will is aware of his condition it doesn’t mean there won’t be stag sightings and it’s not just going to be Will in his cell either as you can see from the new promo; there’s the courtroom and his imagination.

I was already beyond excited about season 2 and all the promotional work is raising the anticipation bar even higher. Hannibal returns to NBC Friday, February 28.
