New Girl 3.15 Review: Can You Be Friends with an Ex?

5 Feb

In what feels like an extension of the When Harry Met Sally theory that a man can’t be friends with a woman he finds attractive, New Girl deals with the notion friendship with an ex. Nick is firmly on the no spot as he thinks the only reason you remain friends is because there is the possibility of sex, Jess falls on the other side of the argument insisting this isn’t the case. In step two exes – we’ve got Caroline who Nick hasn’t seen since he walked out on her at the end of season one and Berkley (played by TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite Adam Brody) as one of Jess’ exes who she has been in regular (off screen) contact for the 10 years since they broke up.

NG_Ep314-Sc14_0009It’s funny to think of Caroline as the wronged party as for so long she has been painted as this woman who broke Nick’s heart, but on this occasion she is very much the injured party. When Nick got back together with Caroline, she became the instant enemy as she was the obstacle to all things Nick and Jess. So when Nick returned and cranked up AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” it was easy to bask in the dancing goodness and not give a second thought to the woman he left in the apartment he was meant to move into. I mean, who cares right? Well this is a good lesson in characters who help move the story forward and get left behind; Caroline is not a regular and nor is she someone I have rooted for, but when you take it from her perspective it’s understandable why she has these bottled up feelings of rage that explode over someone’s car that isn’t actually Nick’s.

Unlike the Super Bowl episode where Nick’s feelings accidentally fell out of his mouth, this is classic Nick Miller in that he bumbles about random crap for half an hour – PS I would totally watch an episode of Jake Johnson doing this – like how would you give a thumbs up if you gave up your thumb? So Nick never told Caroline the real reason why he couldn’t be with her and this entire time she thought it was because of Jess. I’d say the full blown shouting match in “Tomatoes” that Caroline would have definitely heard was probably the indicator that there were more than just friendship feelings going on.

For two years Caroline thought that she was insane and while this has been happening in a world that doesn’t impact the characters we watch each week, it’s hard not to feel sympathy for her when it’s all laid out like that. This moment turns maybe inappropriately into a super sweet Nick and Jess declaration – I might feel sorry for Caroline but I’m Nick and Jess all the way – yep he loved Jess as soon as she walked through the door. You could quibble with his version of events, but then again he did turn down a drink with Caroline to go and lead a rendition of “(I’ve Had) The Time of my Life” at Jess in the pilot, so it’s not all that retcon of the writers. For Jess it happened “waaaaaaaaaaay” later. This I also totally buy.

So back to this idea that exes can’t be friends and with Nick and Caroline I would say this is a world of no. Jess and Nick have had debates like this in the past, most notably in “Landlord” when they almost had a threesome with their landlord Remy just to prove a point. On that occasion Nick argued that Remy was only being nice to get sex and in “Exes” Nick asserts a similar belief; this time with exes rather than helpful landlords. Nick gets to be right again as Berkley declares his love for Jess and he wants to leave his wife for her as he’s vastly underappreciated at home. What this leads to is a whole level of farce that is accentuated by what is going on across the hall (more on that shortly) and Adam Brody’s reaction to the fake water being sprayed in his face is my new everything, gif please.

Maybe Jess should have laid off the xoxo’s, though she’s right that oooo would be a dumb way to sign off and this is the perfect time to highlight just how good Zooey Deschanel’s comic timing is as her reactions to all of the Berkley/Caroline related shenanigans are hilarious. The timeline of Nick and Jess getting together is brilliant – “London has a great Olympics” – but in the end it doesn’t matter that they didn’t get together straight away, that’s not the kicker for Caroline, it’s the not knowing why Nick left in the first place. Deschanel is also wonderful when hitting the emotional notes and her crying in the shower “This is the worst thing that’s ever happened to me. I’ve led a very fortunate life” is full of self awareness.

With Berkley, Nick is ultimately right with how he feels about Jess but instead of going down the old jealously route, Nick treats him with hilarious contempt. This could all just be the new age dad stuff (plus Berkley doesn’t like beer) but it’s also a strong indicator of how solid the Nick/Jess relationship is at the moment. I think Nick is happy that Berkley is into Jess because he also gets to be right with his theory, except for Winston who still keeps in contact with family members of his exes.

The hijinks in “Exes” also covers new relationships (or rather hookups) across the hall in apartment 4C. Schmidt’s finally finished his loft and the only way he can coax Winston and Coach over is with a free sub coupon and an offer to use his apartment whenever they want. With the drama going on at home it’s not surprising that both Winston and Coach choose Schmidt’s over their place. The reveal of Winston using the spare bedroom for a night with Bertie (who we first met in “Longest Night Ever“) is brilliant and I’d be more than happy if we got to see more of her. Winston is still applying for the police and his Halloween costume hat from last season is coming in useful in the bedroom department.

Schmidt doesn’t get to use one of the 15 different bang spots in his living room area – that’s why there’s so many plush surfaces – but hearing him describe them all countered by Winston pretending he knows what positions Schmidt is talking about is totally worth it. Winston also wants to be Moneypenny before realizing that Moneypenny is a woman. This group has some sketchy pop culture knowledge. Schmidt’s off his game as living by himself has brought out his weirder side; Cece plays friend and bartender advice giver showing that maybe exes can be friends, right? Well at the moment they can but I have a feeling that towards the end of the season their attraction might be revisited. I would be more than happy if they could prove Nick wrong and be the exes who can be friends without the sex factor.

The Wish List: April Ludgate and Party Dresses

4 Feb

If TV Ate My Wardrobe could raid one character’s closet it probably wouldn’t be Olivia Pope (it’s just too much white for this spiller to handle and I wouldn’t want to ruin those beautiful clothes). Parks and Recreation’s April Ludgate would definitely feature at the top of this list and it’s pretty much the same as why I love Sundance red carpet fashion; it’s pretty much the perfect blend of casual and cool. So many sweaters, plaid shirts and that all important mustard hoodie.

It’s not just April’s office wear that we covet and while she might act like she doesn’t give a shit, her choice of dresses reflects otherwise. That and her mumbled “I love you too” to Ann in the big send off episode last week. This was the moment that tipped me into super misty eye territory and as with Leslie my eyes became pretty much useless.

April purple dressThe purple knit Presley Skye dress has an abstract animal print pattern and it’s kinda hypnotic. It also reminds me of a kaleidoscope and I love the long sleeves (which are definitely needed right now). April’s costuming includes a lot more color and pattern than you might expect for a character with a sardonic edge, not that color is for those with a sunny disposition.

Parks and Recreation - April and LeslieAnn and Chris’ leaving party isn’t the first time April’s worn a fancy dress this season and there was a fancy pants event in the London premiere episode. The dress April is wearing has graced these pages before on Gossip Girl’s Kelly Rutherford during New York Fashion Week. It’s Alice + Olivia and we’re drawn to the various size polka dots, because of course. Leslie also looks great in Stella McCartney in the London episode and a Ted Baker dress in last week’s episode. The pink lip color they’ve been using on Leslie all season is on my ‘find out what color’ list, the same goes with Gina on the Brooklyn Nine-Nine Super Bowl episode. If anyone knows the brand or color then let me know. This is why we need a makeup IMDb.

The 2014 Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue

3 Feb

Vanity Fair’s Hollywood issue is one of my favorite magazines of the year and I’ve spoken at length in previous posts about other anticipated issues that revolve around TV; this is the movie equivalent. The Hollywood issue that got me hooked is the Tom Ford, Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley 2006 edition and finding out who is on the cover is a mixture of excitement and disappointment. Last year’s Ben Affleck, Emma Stone and Bradley Cooper bed affair is definitely one of the most blah of the past few years and luckily this year’s cover doesn’t suffer the same fate. Thankfully the 2014 cover is a doozy and it reflects the past year in film. It’s also the most diverse Hollywood issue there has been so far and that is a very good thing.

Vanity Fair Hollywood IssueOh hey there’s Jordan Catalano too! For those wondering Claire Danes featured in a Hollywood issue, back in 2005 (Kerry Washington also appeared on this cover).

Here’s the cover roll call Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Julia Roberts (August: Osage County), Idris Elba (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom), George Clooney (Gravity), Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station), Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club), Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave), Naomi Harris (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom), Brie Larson (Short Term 12), Chadwick Boseman (42), Margot Robbie (Wolf of Wall Street) and Lea Seydoux (Blue is the Warmest Color).

Click on the image for a large version of the cover. Plus the GOOP article we’ve all been waiting for – probably a very watered down version.

New Girl 3.14 “Prince” Review: Finger Guns and Declarations

3 Feb

Nick’s big birthday gesture and the coin anecdote (which I’m still swooning over by the way) in the last episode suggested that things were moving in a pretty serious direction for the New Girl couple and there’s no better time to up the romantic ante than the post Super Bowl episode.

Sure they had to reinforce the notion that Jess is Nick’s girlfriend in the opening scene for any new viewers by mentioning this several times, along with the word panties. A word that normally skeezes me out, but much like the cake baking moist incident this is hilarious and the gag gets more ridiculous as it goes on – “Panty Hawk! I’d watch that show” – and it’s the punchline that sent me over the edge. In fact this episode delivers on both laughs and heart; while I don’t know how well the latter plays to a brand new audience there is of course Prince and he is amazing.

New Girl PrinceThe “I love you” moment on a sitcom can be rather fraught and New Girl switches the usual gender conventions with Nick blurting it out first and Jess replying with finger guns. Like their first kiss it just happens and it’s such a casual “Have fun, I love you” that it doesn’t sound out of place until everyone realizes that this is not something that has previously been uttered out loud and the things get super awkward. Maybe not as awkward as Jess having a panic attack and passing out when trying to say it back and then having all their friends share in Nick trying to take it back. Nick’s “I love you” reminded me not of another sitcom, but The Good Wife when Will ends a phone call to Alicia with an innocuous “love you.” This feels like higher stakes accidentally calling your teacher mom or dad, which I know I definitely did at least once and was mortified.

Nick’s generally been the one to make the first moves in this relationship, the only stumble on his part was when he found it hard to acknowledge that Jess was his girlfriend and that was more plot contrivance than anything else. Nick might have this grumpy exterior, but underneath it all he is a romantic at heart; the video from “Birthday” underlines this and if this big Super Bowl episode hadn’t been taking place I suspect this is when Nick would have said those three words.

So Jess is the one who is finding it hard to emote and in a crisis like this who better to help than Prince?!* Cece and Jess’ reaction when they tell the guys they’ve been invited to a party at Prince’s house is the perfect amount of crazy dancing and screaming. Jake Johnson ups this by once again showing just how high pitched he can make his scream; it might even top his Halloween haunted house effort. Prince’s role is to provide love and style advice for Jess; there’s a whole training montage and instead of running there’s ping-pong and a variety of outfits. Pancakes and some time in a dark cupboard help Jess with her fear problem and the reaction to the first time Prince whispers in her ear is perfect. Repeating the not being able to hear a whisper gag results in Jess yelling “I love you, Nick Miller” resulting in all the warm and fuzzy feelings. This show.

Also adding to the sweet emotional core is Schmidt’s story and quite a lot of this season has placed him on the outside looking in. First there was his two-timing and then he moved out; Schmidt’s always been about striving for an ideal that doesn’t really exist. After all his dream BFF is Kanye. Instead he realizes that his dingbat friends are the ones that he should want to be around. This isn’t settling, it’s just Schmidt finally understanding that what he’s got already is really pretty great. Silly games like lemon mouth are way more fun than the VIP area anyway and he still gets to dance on stage with Prince. In fact Schmidt’s trajectory this season has been much like the show itself, it got a little lost and now it has found its way back and we’re out of the New Girl slump. It’s a good thing that they turned it on for an episode that’s going to get a whole lot more eyeballs too.

Coach and Winston get to be the cool guys at the party with their “Fire and Ice” play that both Nick and Schmidt mocked and it not only gets them into the party, but also helps charm supermodels (that’s Victoria Secrets’ Alessandra Ambrosio and Ana Beatriz Barros). This is ruined by drunk Nick and his assertion that one day they will be replaced by robots. The product placement gag works a lot better than the season 2 episode “Models” as Nick yells at Coach for getting turned on by the gas mileage. Winston has felt this once, it was a Thursday. Product placement is one of those things that I know shows have to do so I don’t mind it too much, especially when it is done like this and shade is thrown.

Flashback gags of Nick dressed as Prince and Winston screaming “I love you” pretty much sent me over the edge and this is a very funny episode, it’s definitely the most I have laughed this season. All the bases are covered with awkward humor aplenty, strong visual gags like the guys at the washing machine and pretty much all the reactions to being in the presence of Prince – when he forgives Jess it is my everything.

There’s a definite sense of wish fulfillment as not only Jess gets to sing with Prince – she knows the words because Prince is magic – but her friends also get to join in. Yes even Nick with his terrible dancing. It’s fitting in a way that Cece ends the episode playing ping-pong with Prince as the rest of the group reflect on the crazy of their night as she needs a win; this is a great way to do so.

A really fun episode and one that used the huge guest start to not only propel the overall New Girl story forward, but also basks in the ridiculousness of this moment. There will be another New Girl episode this week and I’m pretty damn excited as while he is not Prince, Seth Cohen (Adam Brody) will be guest starring.

* My “reason why I love Prince” story comes courtesy of my first proper New Year’s Eve party when it turned from 1998 to 1999. I was 16 and in London at a house party and I felt like a super cool grown up (I really wasn’t – later that night I fell down a curb and some tube station stairs because of the too tall heels I couldn’t walk in and miraculously it was the curb that hurt the most). We thought that playing “1999” was so obvious, but really dancing and singing along to it is one of my fondest teen memories.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

31 Jan

Switching from red carpets and the many events January has delivered (well aside from one) it’s going to be a costume heavy “Out of the Box” this week as we take a look at The Carrie DiariesHow I Met Your Mother and The Originals.

This is the Time

Prom on The Carrie Diaries didn’t disappoint; so much tulle, color, sequins and pattern. Walt looks pretty dapper in his tux too. As with most of the costuming from this show these pieces aren’t vintage ’80s and both Mouse and Maggie’s dresses are available to buy if you happen to need a prom dress. Hell even Dorrit got in on the whole gown thing and wore bubble gum pink, even if she was doing it for irony. Oh, Dorrit. It’s the last episode of season 2 tonight and it could also turn out to be the series finale as there’s no word on renewal. I hope this isn’t the case as there’s still a lot more life in this show and Walt’s story been an emotional roller coaster that I’m not ready to disembark.

How I met your motherI haven’t seen any of How I Met Your Mother this season as I fell out of love with it a few seasons back, but after seeing so many positive reactions about this week’s episode “How Your Mother Met Me” I dipped back in and I’m so glad I did. Cristin Milioti made me care about a character we didn’t even get to see and by her La Vie En Rose rendition the screen was incredibly blurry. Milioti is just so effortlessly charming and while the long path to unveiling the mother hasn’t gripped me, her performance is the opposite. In the shot above the Mother is wearing the J Crew Majesty pea coat we featured on our wish list a couple of months ago and it looks great on Milioti, love the lighter color.

The Originals 1.12It was a flashback heavy week on The Originals as we ventured back to the start of prohibition; Marcel has just returned from serving in WWI hence the uniform and the tuxedoed Klaus and Elijah are unsurprisingly dapper. So many eras of suits to cover and thankfully not as many awful flashback wigs. When will either this or TVD indulge my love of the ’70s? Then there might be terrible hair.

Taylor SwiftThis one photo is not like the others and yet there’s something just as dramatic about Taylor Swift whipping her hair at the Grammys as she plays the Jake song (or “All Too Well” to give its full name). This stunning gown with bejeweled shoulders is by Alberta Ferretti and it adds well dressed spectacle to this moment. So Taylor you didn’t win, even though for a second you thought you did, but you will always have this moment among all the awkward dancing gifs. I have no rhythm when it comes dancing and so this Tumblr is my new everything.

Wear a TV Logo on Your Bag

30 Jan

Anna Gunn featured on the TV Ate My Wardrobe SAG Awards red carpet best dressed and she also carried our favorite accessory at this event – a custom Edie Parker Breaking Bad emblazoned clutch.

Anna Gunn Breaking Bad clutchThe trend has continued as Lena Dunham posted a picture to her Instagram showing off a Girls clutch from Charlotte Olympia. This is part of Olympia’s pre-Fall 2014 collection and will be available from April – there are also some pretty cool looking Archie clutches currently on sale.

Lena Dunham Girls ClutchThis opens up a whole new avenue of TV inspired clothing and there’s an endless list of TV show logos, past and present that would work just as well as these Girls and Breaking Bad offerings. I mean I have a Dunder Mifflin tote bag, but it’s not really the same thing.

Carrie BagThe first season of The Carrie Diaries starts with a nail polish disaster resulting in a one of a kind purse that lands Carrie Bradshaw an internship at Interview and while that bag is long gone on the show now; it’s still one of the defining images in the intro.

The Bell Jar Clutch

TV shows aren’t the only ones to get the clutch bag treatment as Parisian designer Olympia Le-Tan has been using classic book covers as clutch bag designs since the S/S 2010 ‘Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover‘ collection and I’ve been coveting one ever since. The Bell Jar is part of the ‘Still Ill‘ 2012 series and as it is my favorite book, it’s also top of my wish list.

A bag can easily become a blank canvas and TV is the latest place to inspire; how about a ’90s line featuring shows that have either just hit or will be reaching the 20 year milestone soon?

Broad City Catch Up

29 Jan

Last week the first episode of Broad City aired on Comedy Central and while it’s going to get unfairly compared to Girls – young women with creative desires who live in New York City – it feels more like Curb Your Enthusiasm or Louie. Or you know its own separate entity. When something is new there is the urge to put it in the “it’s like meets y box (recently I saw Frances Ha as “it’s like Sex and the City meets Girls) for marketing and categorizing reasons and I have been guilty of doing this when describing a TV show or movie. Moving beyond this I want to look at Broad City and the material that existed before the half hour I watched last week. Yes I’m very late to this party.

Broad CityThe first episode introduces Ilana and Abbi (Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson are the creators of Broad City) and it’s very much in the middle of their story, there’s no this is how and why they’re friends. Not that this is necessary and the world already feels developed because it is. Broad City as you’re probably already aware begun as a web series in 2010 and you can watch it here, so this is what I did and here are the ones that stood out. The episodes average between two and five minutes so you can do what I did and binge in two sittings or take your time.

“Subway on a Sunday” is only the third episode and it’s the one that feels the most Larry David to me as this is an extension of the awkward ‘stop and chat.’ While the heightened reality comedic aspects are well done, it’s this observational humor that really strikes a chord with me. It also reminded me of when you say goodbye to someone and then it turns out that you’re going in the same direction as them. Awkward.

For anyone that found Fred Armisen hiding behind a coat stand the funniest thing on Broad City last week, then “Dog Sitting” is one for you. Plus there’s a super cute dog and Ilana’s showing how few boundaries she has coming into play; Ilana’s lack of filer is already one of my favorite things about Broad City. Though I’m totally an Abbi (eye rolling at myself right now). Oh and Ilana is wearing a t-shirt with a drawing of a denim vest and it’s kinda everything.

“Drummer Girls” shows Ilana and Abbi performing in the park and unlike the event in last week’s episode this one is a win for them and it’s totally charming.

Video chat plays an important part in the web series and this has been translated into the show as we saw Ilana throwing up and having sex while video chatting with Abbi (who was less than thrilled with either conversation). See no filter. This is a really fun one involving fake elevators and snack food. Also who doesn’t like music?

In the final installment of the web series the production values are noticeably higher in “I Heart New York.” Oh and there are famous comedic ladies (including the producer of the new show). It’s surreal, yet rooted in reality and involves a great gag with Abbi’s bag. Pretty much everything about the chugger (the charity mugger with the clipboard) is spot on, back when I smoked I was super guilt tripped into signing up.

Talking of the producer here is Amy Poehler talking to Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer about Broad City for Smart Girls at the Party. They discuss the origins of Broad City, their comedy backgrounds and the notion of ‘finding your voice.’ And there’s a dance party.

Watch the web series here and a new episode airs tonight (Wednesday 29) on Comedy Central.

Zooey Deschanel’s Ready-to-wear Collection with Tommy Hilfiger

28 Jan

TV Ate My Wardrobe are huge fans of both Zooey Deschanel and her character Jess on New Girl’s style, so when we saw the news of the collaboration between Deschanel and Tommy Hilfiger (in the midst of a Felicity discussion with TAMW contributor Julie Hammerle) the questions of when, how much and what does the collection look like immediately sprung to mind. WWD has the answers and it won’t break the bank – unless you buy all 16 dresses – as the prices range from $98 to $199 and 14 of the 16 items will be on sale at Macy’s from April 14. The “To Tommy, From Zooey” line will land on tommy.com on April 21 and some stores will also include handbags and jewelry designed by Deschanel.

Zooey Deschanel THThe overall theme of the collection is vintage inspired with red, blue and white as the predominant color palette; mixing Mod with nautical and “it’s a new way to look at fun, American classics.” Whenever Deschanel discusses style inspiration in the plethora of magazine profiles vintage is the one constant factor and this collection has a whole ’60s vibe with the above shirt dress (this is my favorite of the looks released) really embodying this notion.

Sketch Zooey DeschanelPleats and prints are two dominant fabric and pattern themes with feminine and flirty looks featuring throughout; fit and flare is where it is at. This is part of the spring/summer ready-to-wear collection and it fits the “Tommy girl” aesthetic with a Deschanel twist. It pretty much has me longing for the end of this cold weather even though I’ll still be hankering for my tights with skirts this short.

Zooey Deschanel capsule collectionAt the Met Gala in May Zooey Deschanel attended wearing a seersucker gown by Hilfiger and while it didn’t really match the punk theme (but really most attendees missed the memo) it showed that Deschanel and Hilfiger were a style match in heaven. This is why this collaboration isn’t too much of a surprise and in terms of perception Deschanel’s twee styling has long been up for discussion and so she might as well get something positive out of it. In an InStyle interview last year she said “People are more affected by how I look and dress myself than I think anyone would care to admit” and so by producing a collection like this it might give detractors something to nod along to and say ‘of course,’ but fans of her style (like myself) will be cheering.

to tommy, from zooey sketchWhile none of the sketches or finished pieces that we have seen so far has included Peter Pan collars – Deschanel exclaimed in Glamour magazine last year “I want to be a fucking feminist and wear a fucking Peter Pan collar. So fucking what?” – I wouldn’t be surprised if a few sneak in. The word brand is kinda eye roll inducing and yet Deschanel is building her multimedia empire; actor, musician, producer, web entrepreneur and now designer. It’s worth repeating that this is a line that isn’t extravagantly priced and it also looks wearable. If only it would get a little warmer.

Music Monday: Girls and Nancy Sinatra’s “Sugar Town”

27 Jan

After the return on Music Monday last weekGirls steps up again on the soundtrack front with another track from the past. The song is “Sugar Town” by Nancy Sinatra (recently covered by Zooey Deschanel in (500) Days of Summer) and it’s a rather peppy song that reflects the detached and distant attitude towards death displayed by Hannah in “Dead Inside.”

“Sugar Town” starts to play over Hannah’s story as we transition into the credits and Hannah can only show the emotions expected of her by retelling a made up story that had no impact when she believed it to be real. Well it had some impact as she questioned why the dress was so tiny and sometimes grief is so stilted that inconsequential details are what we focus on. Does this make Hannah a bad person? No, but she’s also pretty terrible at filtering her thoughts about what this means for her e-book. She’s also pretty self-absorbed (see also the road trip to rehab) so a song like “Sugar Town” is pretty apt for her world view at the moment.

GirlsEveryone reacts to death in a different way and it’s Jessa that produces the most compelling story this week as the brash facade begins to crack as she finds out that her friend faked her death so Jessa would stop being her enabler. This has more of an impact than anything we’ve seen before, even more so than the conversation with Kathryn Hahn back in season one. More of this please.

In the music video for “Sugar Town” Nancy Sinatra goes for a hike in an outfit that might not be the most appropriate for this activity; white go go boots and matching polka dot mini skirt and tied shirt. It’s amazing and there’s a waterfall. Alas we can’t stay in Sugar Town is as made up as Hannah’s story.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

24 Jan

January isn’t just a month of award season shindigs; no it’s also the time to see what films might feature in the next award season as many filmmakers and actors flock to Utah for the Sundance Film Festival. The red carpet here is less floor length gown and more tights and boots, which to be honest is more my speed. This week’s Out of the Box is looking at the winter fashion on display as well as the Elle magazine Women in TV celebration that took place in LA on Wednesday featuring some of the cover stars.

Elisabeth Moss SundanceElisabeth Moss has been killing it on the red carpet, wowing at the recent Golden Globe Awards and now wearing pretty much ideal outfit at the Sundance premiere for “The One I Love.” Tights, super cute ankle boots and a winter floral dress are a winning Sundance combination and the film has been well received (also starring Mark Duplass and Ted Danson). This is definitely the best haircut that Moss has had – yay short hair – and the dash of pink lipstick adds a pop of color to this look.

Elijah Wood Sundance 2014We love a good pea coat here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and Elijah Wood is rocking a classic navy blue at a Game of Thrones Sundance soiree (Big Boi from Outkast hosted). This outfit is both stylish and functional and no one pulls off the sweater/shirt combo as well as the diminutive star.

Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson SundanceDiane Kruger laughs in the face of the freezing cold weather in a Ports 1961 creation and it’s all about the layering; belted tweed waistcoat, black jeans, boots, collarless white shirt and a stunning camel coat draped over her shoulders. The Chanel purse and Joshua Jackson add that little something extra to this winter warming appearance. It’s the perfect amount of Sundance chic without looking too try.

Zooey Deschanel and Mindy KalingMoving on to warmer climates with Zooey Deschanel and Mindy Kaling at the Elle magazine “Women in TV” celebration (they’re both cover stars). Deschanel is wearing a Dolce & Gabbana dress and while I’m not in love with the sheer sleeves, the polka dots instantly cancels this out. Kaling’s pink lip color is on trend and the black Badgley Mischka frock looks really great on her.

Uzo AdubaI finally started Orange is the New Black this week (I know) and after two episodes I’m totally all in. The cast feature in the Elle ‘Women in TV’ issue and Uzo Aduba looks fantastic in a super feminine lace frock at the event celebrating this publication.
