The Wish List: More Joan Watson Dresses on Elementary

15 Apr

Having only recently caught up on Elementary, it’s only fair to dedicate another post to the wonderful wardrobe of Joan Watson and two of the delightful dresses she wore in the most recent episode “No Lack of Void.”

Joan Marni dressWith a slight hint of whimsy, this is another floral Joan Watson dress and while the one featuring on last week’s Elementary wish list was manipulated to look like an x-ray there is something more doodle like about this Marni silk print dress.

MarniMixing up the slightly oversized look and continuing to embrace pattern is the second outfit choice from “No Lack of Void” with a Christian Pellizzari tree print dress.

Joan WatsonPockets! Yep this was already a funky frock and the “anything with pockets is instantly more desirable” rule can be applied. The contrasting patterns and tee like top half with the box pleat skirt design makes this look like two separates when it’s really just one. It’s a fun dress choice and Joan’s signature style is made up of pieces that set her apart from how we generally code the clothes detectives tend to wear and from Sherlock’s distinctive buttoned up look.

A brief fantasy costuming interlude with a dress I could see Joan wearing and one that isn’t going to destroy your bank account.

Topshop Joan dressKeeping the botanical theme with a Trapeze Palm Tree dress from Topshop (available in both UK and US store) and the style and print are very Joan Watson.

The Wish List: Joan Watson’s Dresses on Elementary

7 Apr

Joan Watson joins the TV Ate My Wardrobe amazing coat club as Elementary is both set and shot in New York City, where for a substantial amount of the year good quality outerwear is a must. Having recently caught up on the show which I had previously dipped in and out of (getting season 1 on DVD at Christmas prompted this catch up), I wanted to write something about Joan’s impeccable style.

The coats were my first port of call, but hey it’s spring and there has been far too much winter wear on here over the past few months. Joan also has an incredible selection of boots, but that’s a feature including Alana Bloom and Elizabeth Jennings for the future, plus that fits into the whole brr cold thing. Joan’s around the house clothes rival Jess Day and Mindy Lahiri, but this can also wait for another occasion. Instead, we will be taking a look at some of the recent dresses Joan has worn and where you can get them from.

Elementary 2.18In “The Many Mouths of Aaron Colville” Joan’s penchant for an oversized shift dress is on display. First with this blush pink Club Monaco Iva Blocked frock (currently half off) and Joan’s style moves beyond the usual criminal investigation costuming trappings thanks to her role as consulting detective, rather than actual detective. There’s no need to have her in the usual blouse/pants uniform of female detectives as you tend to see on any of the Law & Order incarnations or even Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The consulting role sets both Sherlock and Joan apart; they can move between worlds as their clothing doesn’t scream police. Joan’s costuming is both feminine and modern without undermining her abilities; it contrasts to the always buttoned up Sherlock.

Elementary 2.19This All Saints dress if from the same episode and the printed image has been manipulated to look like a floral x-ray, which seems perfectly apt for Elementary. It also looks a bit wing like and as with a lot of what happens on this show, sometimes one thing can look a whole lot like something else on the surface. It’s another in the oversized Joan Watson collection; pairing it with tights and ankle booties is the perfect winter to spring transition.

Joan Watson dressSwitching the styling up slightly with a more fitted Alice + Olivia dress that Joan wore a couple of episodes ago (“Ears to You”). It’s red plaid so I’m predisposed to love it, but it’s a plaid dress with a twist as it has leather side panels and a semi-sheer back section. There’s more to this dress than first appearances, how very Elementary of it.

The Wish List: Alana Bloom’s Polka Dots on Hannibal

1 Apr

TV Ate My Wardrobe turns 1 this month (which is terrifying and amazing in equal measures) and so in April we will be looking to the shows, characters and costume styling that has dominated this website over the past year. Polka dots and Hannibal’s Alana Bloom definitely feature on this list so when this character recently wore a polka dot shirt dress (in Bloom’s signature red) it automatically got bumped to TAMW Wish List status.

Hannibal 2.03 Alana in Marc JacobsSadly there’s no full body shot as Alana is seated for the entire scene in “Hassun” as they run through the questions Alana might get asked at Will’s trial. It’s a Marc by Marc Jacobs Minetta print (two tone polka dots) and ticks off all the Alana Bloom dress boxes – print, red and a tied waist.

Marc by Marc Jacobs

It’s also the second time that Alana and Parks and Recreation’s Leslie Knope have worn the same item of clothing (the first being this Equipment blouse), with Leslie wearing this dress in the recent “Galentine’s Day” episode. These two shows could be considered the polar opposite of the human experience and yet they aren’t totally worlds apart; except for the horror that Alana encounters involves dealing with death and Leslie’s is all about bureaucratic nightmares. At the heart of it they are both strong figures in their professions and when it comes to their wardrobe they both favor pattern, so a little cross costuming is not all that bizarre.

Unbuttoning the collar gives a warmer approach to the look and it’s all about making Alana the warm and open one on a show featuring characters who are generally closed off emotionally.

Here’s a quick fantasy costuming suggestion from the Marc by Marc Jacobs current collection and it’s a slight departure from Alana’s usual wardrobe choices. It features a bold print – honeycomb, is it too soon after the recent episode? –  and while it deviates from the red and blues which dominate Alana’s costuming, it’s something that wouldn’t look out of place on this character.

The Wish List: Kate’s Yellow Sweater on Trophy Wife

19 Mar

Yellow clothes are my weakness and while my quest to find the perfect mustard hoodie is ongoing, thanks to this week’s Trophy Wife I’ve been distracted from hoodies by bold yellow sweaters. Springtime is upon us and this means packing up chunky knitwear (well maybe not quite yet as snow lingers in some places, sorry guys). Lighter and brighter options are what I will be looking to showcase in the coming months and this is a great place to start.

Trophy Wife - yellow sweaterTrophy Wife’s Los Angeles setting instantly lends itself to a warm color palette; it’s also sitcom land on ABC so everything tends to be on the more cheerful end of the costume design scale (Diane being the one character on this show who wears darker attire). Kate’s style is very current, with a slight edge; there are a lot of short shorts, skinny jeans, vest tops and the occasional bit of leather. In “The Wedding -Part Two” it’s Kate’s yellow Maison Martin Margiela sweater that caught my attention and inspired this wish list. Paired with a pair of jeans and it instantly gives you a warmer look. The aviators are optional. (Ed. correction the sweater is actually the “Alana” by ALC. Still in love with the Maison Martin Margiela one, though this is not as pricey)

Here are some alternatives – some that won’t break the bank – if you want to brighten your wardrobe.

French Connection yellow jumperConfession time – I’ve been looking at yellow sweaters for some time now and it’s this French Connection ribbed, 3/4 length sleeve affair that started the obsession and it has been top of my covet list for about two months now. Like I said in the intro, yellow is my clothing weakness. Well, one of my clothing weaknesses (see also polka dots and stripes).

Topshop beehive sweaterThe Whitepepper’s Beehive knit jumper is a way to do yellow in a chunkier (read warmer) style if spring looks more like winter at the moment. As they suggest on their website, it is perfect for layering.

Marnie yellow sweater

For something slightly different try this Marni tile pattern sweater as this is one way to wear yellow in pattern form without resorting to polka dots or stripes.

The Wish List: Sneak Peek at Jess’ Wardrobe on New Girl

11 Mar

Zooey Deschanel’s much anticipated Tommy Hilfiger collection is not available until next month, in the meantime her character Jess will be wearing a Tommy Hilfiger sweater on New Girl tonight and it would make a great addition to any spring closet. It’s finally getting warmer so hopefully the chunky knitwear will soon be replaced by items like this and in true Tommy Hilfiger fashion it is all about the classic red, white and blue color palette.

NG_320-22_0459A mini a-line skirt and black tights is a Jess staple and the windowpane pattern is a fresh twist on the usual polka dots and stripes her character tends to favor.

NG_320-6A_0213Also catching our eye from tonight’s episode “Fired Up” is this super cute navy Dear Creatures “Erynn’s Flair for the Classics Dress.”

ModCloth

The belted bow detail is very Jess, though it’s might not be the ideal volleyball attire. Looking through the Dear Creatures collection at ModCloth and I think I’ve found a new brand for spring.

The Wish List: Hannah’s Payday Dress on Girls

25 Feb

In this week’s Girls Hannah got her first paycheck from her advertorial job at GQ and much to Hannah’s surprise the taxes have been taken out and it is correct. What she earns in a week is more than her rent so like any rational person Hannah goes out and buys a dress that looks terrific on her – this might be the best attire Hannah has ever worn on the show – and struts down the street relaxed and happy. This is the kind of outfit where yes, you do go into the store and leave wearing it (see also Broad City last week). When the end of season 2 went full rom-com there were cries of derision and this is probably the most rom-comy Girls has been since that moment and it feels just right.

Girls payday dressThe dress is part of the MCQ Alexander McQueen range and it’s the perfect kind of statement for a first payday. Hannah is no longer wallowing in misery because her writing job isn’t what she thought it would be and this is a huge relief. Hannah’s bratty reaction to having a paid writing job that isn’t memoir related is one aspect of “Free Snacks” I found disheartening and I’m glad she’s moved on from this moment. This is the Hannah Horvath that I want to see; the one who rolls her eyes at folksy guitar singing (which sorry Hannah, I echo Elijah’s “I hate myself for loving him”), lets her friend cry on her even though they won’t say why they’re upset and gets excited about her boyfriend’s new acting gig on Broadway. The Hannah who walks down the street looking as relaxed as this.

Hannah GirlsYes there are still two four more episodes for everything to get fucked up again (12 episodes instead of the previous 10) and Jessa falling off the wagon is surely going to play a big part. After the big argument in “Beach House” a weight has been lifted off this friendship group, or they’re just pretending it didn’t happen and things are going to be even worse than before. Regardless this second half of the season has been funnier and more enjoyable on the whole and this new dress moment feels earned. It is worth noting the Hannah shopping high moves to a montage of an increasingly bored Jessa (accompanied by Lily Allen’s “L8 CMMR“) followed by the return of Richard E. Grant as Jasper. Jasper releases Jessa from the monotony of her day with one of the many substances she hasn’t taken all season.

Is this moment for Hannah going to be temporary or have we reached a point where she has got her shit together?

The Wish List: Jess’ Houndstooth Dress on New Girl

20 Feb

There’s not been much in the way of new TV thanks to the Winter Olympics (I have finally watched Orange is the New Black thanks to the extra time), we do still have something on out wish list from the last episode episode of New Girl and that is Jess’ houndstooth cap sleeves dress.

NG_ep316-sc29_S0A6738As mentioned in my review I’m a little into the houndstooth at the moment and if you’re a regular TV Ate My Wardrobe reader you will know that I have a penchant for all the tooths – hounds, puppy and dog – and for the costuming on New Girl. Putting the two together means an instant place on the wish list. This dress is from Aqua and is currently a steal as it’s more than half price. The belt is a good accessory as it cinches in the waist and breaks up the houndstooth.

If you want a more traditional black and white houndstooth dress with an exaggerated pattern then this Kate Spade (a Jessica Day favorite) Mavis dress is a fabulous alternative.

Kate Spade

Plus it comes with the all important pockets – if I am unsure about buying a dress and it has pockets then I am way more likely to buy it. It’s the little things.

The Wish List: Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Gina’s Sweaters

13 Feb

It looks like we have a rival to April Ludgate as the character whose wardrobe we covet the most and the character in question comes from another Mike Schur co-created show as Chelsea Peretti’s Gina adds another couple of sweaters to the wish list she is already on. Both the new wish list additions feature on the recent episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and while I probably wouldn’t wear the Floorgasm attire, Gina is quickly turning into a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite.

Gina B99First up this lightning bolt sweater adds weather whimsy to your outfit and it’s from A.L.C. Plus it looks great with red pants if you want to brave the colored pants thing – and you really should – mustard pants are what I’m currently after (not to be worn with the mustard hoodie when I eventually find the perfect one). Gina’s wearing really fantastic lipstick too and it adds another pop of color to this ensemble.

Gina Brooklyn Nine Nine sweaterThis diamond sweater is from J. Crew and it’s cashmere so not only does it look awesome, it also feels incredible. An itchy sweater is terrible no matter how fantastic it looks and you won’t have that problem here. More great lip color too. And Gina’s right, she does have great hair.

The Wish List: April Ludgate and Party Dresses

4 Feb

If TV Ate My Wardrobe could raid one character’s closet it probably wouldn’t be Olivia Pope (it’s just too much white for this spiller to handle and I wouldn’t want to ruin those beautiful clothes). Parks and Recreation’s April Ludgate would definitely feature at the top of this list and it’s pretty much the same as why I love Sundance red carpet fashion; it’s pretty much the perfect blend of casual and cool. So many sweaters, plaid shirts and that all important mustard hoodie.

It’s not just April’s office wear that we covet and while she might act like she doesn’t give a shit, her choice of dresses reflects otherwise. That and her mumbled “I love you too” to Ann in the big send off episode last week. This was the moment that tipped me into super misty eye territory and as with Leslie my eyes became pretty much useless.

April purple dressThe purple knit Presley Skye dress has an abstract animal print pattern and it’s kinda hypnotic. It also reminds me of a kaleidoscope and I love the long sleeves (which are definitely needed right now). April’s costuming includes a lot more color and pattern than you might expect for a character with a sardonic edge, not that color is for those with a sunny disposition.

Parks and Recreation - April and LeslieAnn and Chris’ leaving party isn’t the first time April’s worn a fancy dress this season and there was a fancy pants event in the London premiere episode. The dress April is wearing has graced these pages before on Gossip Girl’s Kelly Rutherford during New York Fashion Week. It’s Alice + Olivia and we’re drawn to the various size polka dots, because of course. Leslie also looks great in Stella McCartney in the London episode and a Ted Baker dress in last week’s episode. The pink lip color they’ve been using on Leslie all season is on my ‘find out what color’ list, the same goes with Gina on the Brooklyn Nine-Nine Super Bowl episode. If anyone knows the brand or color then let me know. This is why we need a makeup IMDb.

The Wish List: Wear Your Heart on Your Sweater

16 Jan

Valentine’s Day is upon us and while I’m not all that into flowers and dinner that come with inflated prices, I am partial to clothes with hearts on. Burberry has run with this trend over the past six months with both their men and women’s lines – yes Harry Styles is a fan – now it’s time to see what shows in the past week have been offering up some more affordable heart adorned alternatives.

The Carrie Diaries heart sweaterThe Carrie Diaries celebrated Valentine’s Day last week (the season finale is January 31 hence why it’s this early) in an episode that broke several hearts. Carrie had a terrible night out after getting into a fight with Sebastian and this was followed by a revelation that devastated her BFF Walt. While it didn’t end in a good place for Walt, Carrie and Sebastian made up and it’s a good job considering Carrie is wearing a super cute sweater covered in hearts from Oasis. This wouldn’t be a good break up look, well unless Carrie wants to go DIY again with some nail polish and this is too adorable to ruin.

The Carrie Diaries Heart blouseMeanwhile the other less cutesy Bradshaw sister is also trying out the hearts trend, in black of course and paired with tartan pants in an attempt to make it a tad punk. There are several variations of this shirt available from the Harry Styles favored Burberry, Marc by Marc Jacobs with contrasting white collar or this one from New Look which is a fraction of the cost. For the reverse here’s the C. Wonder blouse that Mindy wore on the most recent Mindy Project. While not as ubiquitous as polka dots, there is a lot of variety when it comes to the symbol of love.

Trophy Wife Heart SweaterIt’s not just shows set in the ’80s with a penchant for hearts and on this week’s Trophy Wife Hillary is wearing a grey sweater with mint green and light grey hearts from Keds. And it’s not even Valentine’s Day. Unlike certain festive themed sweaters, hearts can be worn all year without looking out of place; both alternative kids like Dorrit and more girly girls like Carrie and Hillary can embrace this trend.
