Coming in 2015: TV Promo Roundup

13 Nov

The year isn’t over and yet we are already looking to January 2015 thanks to these promos from Comedy Central and HBO for their returning and brand new offerings coming in the new year.

Abbi and Ilana are back with colorful (and super dark) lipsticks, crop tops aplenty, a white power suit and a surprise appearance by a leopard print fascinator. Commence the Broad City dance party now as season 2 looks set to deliver once again on the funny and getting fucked up antics of a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite lady friendship. Broad City returns Wednesday, January 14.

From the Duplass brothers comes Togetherness and it’s going to be part of the Girls/Looking Sunday night block (starting January 11) which makes sense as it is another figuring out your shit tragic comedy/dramedy (or whatever we are now calling this genre). The cast/creators is why I am very excited and Amanda Peet’s line delivery at the end of the promo is perfect.

Looking gets the most teasery of teases with no episode footage and what comes down to a disco light party reminding us that Patrick is caught in a love triangle with Richie and Kevin. Plus there’s a whole lot of amazing facial hair. Season 2 gets an episode number bump with two more than last year and I’m looking forward to spending more time with these characters.

Getting the longest preview treatment is Girls and this makes sense considering it has been on the longest; the characters are more established and there’s less mystery. Hannah’s moved to Iowa and she’s eating grapes for a snack, but this still leaves plenty of room for bad decisions and arguments aplenty. Marnie is still pining after Desi, Shoshanna is having a career/life crisis and a couple of people are getting arrested. Plus dancing, there’s always dancing.

Homeland Season 4 Teaser: Tyranny of Secrets

19 Aug

Season 4 of Homeland is all about Carrie Mathison’s struggles with motherhood. Okay, maybe that’s not quite the central focus of this new promo, but the shot of the adorable framed mother and baby photo seems to indicate that this will come into play particularly when you factor in the baby as Carrie’s last tie to the now departed Brody (which, groan I guess). Juggling work/motherhood is not always the most interesting angle and yet with Carrie I am fascinated with how they will address this conflict. As the first Brodyless season Carrie’s obsession will have to take on a new focus and while it looks like she is rejecting motherhood – she “doesn’t have a choice” – this could be the constant niggle for her this year. That and the amount of casualties from the 14 year war (or 14 one year wars as Saul suggests) are taking their toll on all involved including the new addition of Corey Stoll who already looks flustered and a very sad looking Quinn surrounded by takeout and booze.

Homeland season 4Homeland has struggled to hit the highs of season 1 and like many I have grown frustrated with the show (nothing has been as good as the Carrie color coordinated wall of investigation) sticking with it out a sense of hope that it will get better. The Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin factor (plus my maybe irrational shipping of Carrie and Quinn) is another reason I’ve continued watching and I’ve yet to tire of the Cry Face of Glory as some have. Carrie is rather restrained in this teaser for anyone who is fed up of extreme Carrie. The lack of any Brody family members in this teaser is also satisfying (sorry guys, but your time has come) and I want to see what Homeland can do when the focus is elsewhere.

Homeland returns Sunday, October 5 and the song playing in the teaser is “Hole in the Middle” by Emily Jane White.

Boardwalk Empire’s Final Season Trailer Confirms Time Jump: “Change is Coming”

12 Aug

A couple of months ago Michael K. Williams mentioned that Boardwalk Empire wasn’t just leaping forward a couple of years for its final season; nope instead the jump is taking us from 1924 to 1931. The new trailer confirms this with a bold 1931 appearing on the screen with “Lucky” Luciano taking the role of narrator emphasizing his importance to this time period (and he’s upped his tie game with a purple stunner). There are others who we won’t be seeing unless flashback or changes to history take place (I’m not going to say who, but if you want to find out which character died in 1928 then Wikipedia away).

Boardwalk Empire final seasonWith just eight episodes left there are a lot of scores to settle and plenty of money to be made even while the country suffers the after effects of the Wall Street Crash. Who will make it out alive?

The trailer is the usual mix of threats, violence, seedy glamour and super serious pensive looks as these characters try to come out on top. The song is “Tranquilize” by The Killers featuring Lou Reed and adds to the tension/tempo as it quickly cuts between moments.

Boardwalk Empire returns Sunday, September 7.

Sleepy Hollow Season 2 Poster and Promo: “Evil Takes Hold”

6 Aug

Last time we saw Abbie and Ichabod in the season 1 finale of Sleepy Hollow one was in a giant pink plastic house in purgatory and the other bond by tree roots buried six feet under. As the new artwork shows for the forthcoming second season there are evil forces at play trying to keep them apart.

Sleepy Hollow S2The new promo and clip show that Abbie and Ichabod will be reunited despite their current perilous positions; the task at hand requires them saving Katrina once again as she was taken by former fiance Abraham and now Headless Horseman. Ichabod must also continue to get to grips with the modern world and he is not a fan of banks and/or credit cards. Some snark is also reserved for how little a bank trusts its customers with their pens. Oh I have missed you and your view of modernity, Ichabod.

A slightly fancy fist bump to add even more confusion, general Ichabod/Abbie banter, John Noble’s sinister laugh and all the other evil they are facing makes Sleepy Hollow one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s most anticipated fall shows.

Sleepy Hollow returns Monday, September 22.

God Help the Girl Trailer: “You’re Going to Need a Pop Group”

22 Jul

Time to take a TV intermission with the trailer and a song from God Help the Girl. Wistfully staring up at my ceiling instead of doing homework was a frequent activity while listening to Belle and Sebastian as daydreams are at the heart of their lyrics. Lead singer Stuart Murdoch expanded the Belle and Sebastian world in 2009 with a female vocalist group God Help the Girl and it is an album that has been on constant rotation (particularly when the weather warms up). It’s one of my favorites to dance around the living room to (and also makes for good writing/procrastinating music) and this film project by the same name is high up on the anticipated list.

God Help the Girl posterGod Help the Girl is a coming-of-age story set during a summer in Glasgow featuring three emotionally adrift musicians who form an indie-pop band together. Starring Emily Browning, Olly Alexander and Hannah Murray (Skins and Game of Thrones) it looks set to show a period in your life where possibilities are endless with dance and song. Plus there are so many cute dresses, capey goodness and knitwear aplenty in the trailer. Also be on the lookout for the full David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust makeup approach. Oh and for anyone who has read this, yes I have made it my new mission to find out the brand/shade that Emily Browning is wearing on the poster.

As a film/band this might fall into a “Too Twee” category for some, for me however this is optimal levels of charm and so I will be reaching for more nearest tea dress (which won’t be hard to find in my closet) when I see this film. For now I will be dancing around the confines of my house (which is best for anyone who has seen my clunky/awkward moves).

Listen to one of the tracks from the film below and God Help the Girl is released in the UK August 22 (with special screenings on the 16) and September in the US.

Update! And now there is a music video (via Stereogum). Yes I want that yellow dress. It is everything.

Orphan Black Season 2 Trailer: “There’s Only One of Me”

11 Mar

Orphan Black featured on TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Best of 2013 Series and so any new trailer is going to cause a stir here, especially one with this much new footage. The teaser released in December was pretty much a who’s who of the clones with no new information; this trailer reveals a whole lot more. It’s still incredibly vague and it hints at the wider conspiracy at play with Sarah going up against blonde bobbed Rachel. Rachel is the most recent addition to Tatiana Maslany’s ever expanding character list and she is the one who appears to be near the top of this network. We only met Rachel in the season finale so we don’t know a whole lot about her yet, but don’t worry as Alison and Cosima both feature in this trailer alongside Felix, the latter who is voicing his concerns. Hot Paul also makes an appearance, a new dude Sarah is smooching and Beth’s former partner Detective Bell.

The big question for me is raised at the end; which clone is on the table at the end? Expect answers and more mystery when Orphan Black returns Saturday, April 19 on BBC America.

First Look at The Normal Heart

10 Mar

Here’s your first look at HBO’s The Normal Heart and Ryan Murphy’s TV movie adaptation of the Larry Kramer play of the same name has devastating written all over it (Kramer also wrote this screenplay). Covering the HIV-AIDS epidemic in the early 80s and focusing on events in New York City, this project features Mark Ruffalo, Taylor Kitsch, Matt Bomer, Julia Roberts, Jim Parsons, Jonathan Groff and Denis O’Hare (this is a whole lot of TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites).

If this teaser is anything to go by, stocking up on tissues is a must as my screen is already blurry thanks to Ruffalo’s (playing Ned Weeks) shouted plea – “I am trying to understand why nobody gives a shit that we’re dying!”

The Normal Heart airs Sunday, May 25.

Sherlock Mini-Episode Released: “Many Happy Returns”

24 Dec

While yesterday’s Orphan Black teaser didn’t reveal a whole lot, the same can’t be said for the Sherlock mini-episode which has been released ahead of the season 3 launch. While it doesn’t explain how Sherlock faked his death it does show what he has been up to in the two years between that moment and when season 3 returns. It’s a lovely video gift from the BBC and here at TV Ate My Wardrobe we say thank you! Not only that, but we get a glimpse at John’s new house and let’s just say we have wallpaper envy.

Sherlock returns on New Year’s Day in the UK and January 19 in the US.

Orphan Black Season 2 Teaser Trailer

23 Dec

In a year of excellent TV one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s favorite shows and most anticipated returns is Orphan Black. BBC America have bestowed upon us via Entertainment Weekly a new season 2 teaser and it acts more as a reminder of who the many Tatiana Maslany’s are, rather than revealing anything new. I’m ok with this as it’s building up the tension and it emphasizes that each clone despite their similarities is “One of a kind.”

To find out what we had to say about Orphan Black and star Tatiana Maslany as part of the TV Ate My Wardrobe Best of 2013 head here.

Hannibal Season 2 Poster and Premiere Date Revealed

20 Dec

Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller gave fans an early Christmas gift as he unveiled the new season 2 key art and the premiere date on Twitter last night and it’s a doozy. While the first season artwork concentrated on Hannibal himself (eating of course), Will Graham is getting his chance to shine in an image that plays on the idea that Will and Hannibal have switched places; the face mask is something associated with Hannibal Lecter and it’s disconcerting seeing Will wearing it instead.

Hannibal S2Embracing the madness is something I am more than prepared for as Will Graham is now aware of Hannibal’s role in his incarceration and the series of copycat murders. The Friday night time slot is slightly concerning in the way a Friday night spot is, but other shows like Fringe have shown this can work. Like HannibalFringe had relatively low ratings and a fervent fanbase; it lasted 5 seasons and at this point having this much Hannibal would be a huge victory. Let’s not worry ourselves with viewing figures yet and just take in Will Graham looking unhinged on this excellent promo poster.

Hannibal returns Friday, February 28 and for our look at season 1 in our Best of 2013 series head here.
