This week sees a lot of regular “Out of the Box” faces and a whole host of events from daytime celebrations to premieres and panel discussions. Plus Teen Vogue continues to blow their adult counterpart out of the water in the cover stakes. Bold pattern continues to reign strong and there is a lot of awesome lady inspiration below.
Last week Lupita Nyong’o’s Variety magazine cover for their annual Power of Women issue caused all the heart eye emoji reactions and here she is at the event honoring the work of this year’s recipients. Wearing a lime green daisy embroidered Dolce & Gabbana; Nyong’o is a springtime vision with a hint of 60s to her look. Excellent lipstick choice too.
Danai Gurira was also in attendance supporting Lupita who is currently starring in her Broadway play Eclipsed. This is the perfect day dress for this event and looks good without drawing too much focus from the person who is being honored. This is also Gurira’s second week in a row on Out of the Box and she is crushing it in a variety of styles this year from super cool jumpsuits to flowing frocks.
Confirmation airs on HBO tomorrow (Saturday 16) and Kerry Washington recently took part in a Times Talk with Anita Hill; the woman Washington is portraying in the movie. This Carolina Herrera dress reads serious with a hint of whimsy in the floral and pink sheer trim. SJP Collection shoes top it all off and Washington looks great. You can watch the whole fascinating and sometimes rage inducing discussion about the making and history behind Confirmation here.
Oh, hello. Emily VanCamp in J Mendel at the Captain America: Civil War premiere with a ‘just the perfect amount of beardy’ Chris Evans. The fact they are posing together gives me some hope that Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter will get quite a lot/something to do in the new movie (even if she doesn’t really feature in the trailers at all).
Game of Thrones season 6 is almost here and Emilia Clarke has been hitting the promo train hard on magazine covers, at the premiere and the MTV Movie Awards. This might be my favorite of the three recent looks we’ve featured as this face emblazoned Miu Miu dress is unusual in the most mesmerizing way.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s “Fresh Faces” Marie Claire cover is striking and at the party celebrating this issue she stood out in a delightful star emblazoned – perhaps as a nod to the stars on cover – Coach 1941 dress; which I am now coveting hard.
Teen Vogue’s cover game this year has been so strong and their Willow Smith May issue is another captivating image choice. As with other recent teen covers (including another one Smith appears on) there is something beautifully disarming in the direct look to camera and the accompanying interview/editorial is just as interesting.
Out of the Box: Look of the Week
15 AprOut of the Box: Look of the Week
8 AprLast week spring fever was in the air with a whole array of bold patterns and color; this edition of “Out of the Box” is a little bit more varied with some very fun outfits, fancy awards wear and more magazine cover stunners.
Despite my white clothing reservations – because I am a spiller – Danai Gurira crushes it at Black Girls Rock! in this very cool Cushnie Et Ochs jumpsuit number that wouldn’t look out of place in Studio 54’s heyday. Gurira is on a red carpet hot streak and all I can say regarding Walking Dead is Michonne better not be the one on the end of Jeffery Dean Morgan’s bat.
More white and Caitriona Balfe does the whole casual ladysuit thing with aplomb at the Television Academy’s Outlander panel discussion. A simple and super cool twist on one of my favorite trends and I’m looking forward to all the incredible costumes when Outlander returns tomorrow (Saturday 9).
Alison Pill in a very cute outfit at the premiere of The Night Manager and one that a) is perfect for someone who isn’t in the project of the event they are attending and b) something I would like to see in my closet.
At the Olivier Awards Uzo Aduba took a break from performing in The Maids and looked elegant in this orange off the shoulder Elizabeth Kennedy gown. And now all I want is a bag shaped like a ball.
Making their official debut as a couple at the Olivier Awards, which makes this sound like we’re stepping out of a society novel and also maybe trying to shift attention from the question Kit Harington has been asked repeatedly since the Game of Thrones season 5 finale.
This isn’t news for anyone who follows celeb dating stories (which I do), but I am always thrilled when IRL couples walk the carpet together especially when their characters were also together on screen. I’m not a hundred percent in love with the shape of Rose Leslie’s gown, but the color and pattern is stunning.
And by Look of the Week I mean look of the week. The shipping of Marcia Clark and Chris Darden was the biggest surprise to come out of American Crime Story (something I wrote a little bit more on in my Observer column this week). Here are Sarah Paulson and Sterling K. Brown at an American Crime Story For Your Consideration event earlier this week; up close I really like Sarah Paulson’s frock, but that level of sheer in the wide shot and lining does not do it for me.
Another striking Lupita Nyong’o magazine cover as part of Variety’s annual “Power of Women” issue celebrating her work with Mother Health International. Excellent trench and background color elevate this shot, but Lupita’s face is what really makes this a standout image.
The Gilmore Girls revival is in full swing and because I am only just finishing up season 1 (I know) I am avoiding reading this Entertainment Weekly article and looking at the photos until I’ve caught up; it is going to be hard but also that is totally on me.
They both look great and I particularly like Alexis Bledel’s ensemble and lipstick (of course). It’s weird seeing them in clothes that don’t give me all the flashbacks to early aughts fashion nightmares.
Emilia Clark put a sparkly bird on it wearing Gucci on her Glamour cover and there’s a lot of chat about nudity on Game of Thrones including Michiel Huisman’s “perfect bottom.”
Out of the Box: Look of the Week
4 DecAn eclectic “Out of the Box” this week including Star Wars: The Force Awakens pre-premiere press tour excitement, a variety of events and a series of stunning black and white posed shots.
A Zac Posen dress that sparkles as if it is a starry sky from a galaxy far away (I’ll see myself out) for Lupita Nyong’o first at Bloomingdale’s ‘Force 4 Fashion’ event on Wednesday followed by an appearance on The Daily Show. The dress is low key elegance that turns into a sparkly light up display and I am so ready for this press tour.
One of the ‘Force 4 Fashion’ dresses is this stunning Giles Deacon creation; inspired by Captain Phasma and worn here by Phasma herself, Gwendoline Christie. For more incredible photos and a chat about the making of the gown head to Vanity Fair. I love this photo so much I’ve made it my new phone wallpaper; so much power and poise.
A cute and simple Peter Pan collared frock for Elisabeth Moss at the IWC Schaffhausen Rodeo Drive boutique opening; an ideal look that can be dressed up or down for day or night. It maybe also slightly resembles the dress worn by me in my Twitter avatar.
Feeling festive in an all red Salvatore Ferragamo pleated turtleneck dress is Emmy Rossum (in her second appearance this week) at the Godiva ‘Hot Chocolate for a Cause’ benefit. If this wasn’t December this might be too matchy matchy, but it is perfect for a December event like this.
Amy Poehler received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this week and did so in style wearing a charming winter floral dress. Amy was joined by a variety of co-stars/collaborators to celebrate including beautiful tropical fish Rashida Jones and she’s also showing off the pattern pretty.
InStyle gets their first cover of 2016 – yes it is already 2016 in magazine world – so right with this fantastic beauty shot of Viola Davis. Inside the issue Davis talks about her own style versus Annalise’s and a very refreshing beauty philosophy – “What’s released me most from the fear of aging is self-awareness. I’ve never determined my value based on my looks or anything physical. I’ve been through a lot in life, and what has gotten me through is strength of character and faith.”
Now entering the black and white section of this week’s “Out of the Box” with Variety’s ‘Actors on Actors‘ conversations following the same model as their Emmy series. The idea of Charlotte Rampling and Isabella Rossellini sitting down discussing anything is exciting enough and this portrait captures them in all their regal glory. Which is perfect considering they are both acting icons.
Another entry in the Variety ‘Actors on Actors’ series and a shot featuring two more TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites; Elizabeth Banks and Carey Mulligan both make really interesting choices in the their work and style. This is no exception.
The new 2016 Pirelli calendar photos have been unveiled including this stunning shot of Amy Schumer taken by Annie Leibovitz. Schumer posted the photo on her Twitter with the accompanying words “Beautiful, gross, strong, thin, fat, pretty, ugly, sexy, disgusting, flawless, woman” getting ahead of the comments. Click on the image for a clearer look.
Sadly the calendar is not available to buy and unless you are in the fashion industry it will be hard to get your hands on one. Guess I’ll be sticking with the Countryfile calendar my dad buys me every year instead.
Here is the April entry and Serena Williams giving off nothing but strong and beautiful vibes. Head to Elle for more entries including Patti Smith and Tavi Gevinson.
Out of the Box: Look of the Week
16 OctFashion Week season is over but there are still plenty of sartorial delights on offer this week with striking magazine covers and a whole range of red carpet events.
Taraji P. Henson killing it on yet another magazine cover (keep them coming as far as we’re concerned) wearing a stunning Fausto Puglisi dress with ultra high thigh slits. Henson discusses her work ethic with Essence and how her training informs her performance “These kids are thinking they can do reality TV and come and do this craft that I studied, sweated and grinded. People forget it’s a craft because it’s so pop now… Can they make me believe the words coming out of their mouth?” And it must be said that Cookie Lyon is so endearing because of everything Henson brings to this role.
Another TV Ate My Wardrobe “Out of the Box” regular gives good magazine cover in this moody shot for Variety and Brie Larson is going to be a big red carpet presence this awards season if early chatter is anything to go by. Reviews for Room and Larson’s performance suggest huge things are afoot much to our joy; I just finished reading Room and I am excited to see Larson’s interpretation of this emotionally challenging role.
Turtleneck tanks and ladysuits for Anne-Marie Duff in this fantastic photoshoot for Interview.
Continuing her reign as a fashion queen is Kiernan Shipka – and even though I wasn’t a huge fan of her Emmys Dior, it was at least interesting – wearing Bottega Veneta to the Hammer Museum’s Gala in the Garden. Polka dots and pleats perfection.
Cush Jumbo is hitting style highs both on The Good Wife as potential new Alicia bestie and partner (fingers crossed) and on the red carpet at the Golden Heart Awards in a beautiful pink Michael Kors frock.
Also attending this event is Diane Kruger wearing Michael Kors hot off the runway from the new Spring 2016 and as with Kiernan Shipka she is showing how to wear black and blue together (for some reason the color rule of never wearing these two colors together has stuck with me).
Emily Blunt’s mixed textured Michael Kors dress is a fun play on pleated sequins and her black and gold puzzle clutch is just the touch this outfit needs. Now I am picturing Sicario with Blunt and Kruger as Sonya Cross from The Bridge. If that I had been the case I would have liked this movie more.
Danai Gurira isn’t just an incredible actress, she is also a playwright and Lupita Nyong’o is making her off-Broadway debut in the Gurira penned Eclipsed. Both women look stunning on the opening night with Nyong’o dazzling in red Dior and the play has been getting excellent reviews so far. The wish list of stage productions I would like to see gets ever longer.
Out of the Box: Look of the Week
8 MayPattern, print and all the vibrant styles on this week’s “Out of the Box” plus it’s that time again for magazine covers and we’ve got a couple of delights in this department.
I have a folder on my computer which includes many fashion week runway photos of outfits I really like, but don’t quite fit whatever Fantasy Costuming column I am writing. This orange Tanya Taylor ensemble is one such outfit and Kerry Washington looks so good wearing it for her appearance on Good Morning America. Fun and fresh looking; ideal for spring. Those Christian Louboutin ‘True Blue’ sandals are also stunning and a very good way to kick off this week’s sartorial highlights.
Gearing up for Emmy season and Showtime’s starting their ‘for your consideration’ campaign with screenings of their shows; first up is Masters of Sex’s Lizzy Caplan and Annaleigh Ashford. Caplan was a Met Gala standout and once again she is killing it, this time in Mary Katrantzou with Ashford’s mint ensemble ticking the cute panel outfit boxes. I want to go to a garden party with both of them.
This great for many reasons – they are one of my favorite parts of The Affair, they do kinda look like mother and daughter here, Maura Tierney is doing relaxed cool so well and Julia Goldani Telles kicks things up a notch once again in this patterned Bibhu Mohapatra beauty. Also a good time to take another look at her incredible Golden Globes frock. I really hope the second season spends more time outside of the central pairing.
Power clashing to the max and Kiernan Shipka’s dress at the Nylon Young Hollywood party shouldn’t work, but I think Shipka might have a touch of the Kruger (otherwise known as Magical Fashion Unicorn) as I think she looks great. Two more episodes of Mad Men left; so not ready for it to be over.
It has been a week of mixed fortune for Mindy Kaling with news of cancellation, maybe renewal and details of her book all coming out. Another moment of good for Kaling and this is the best InStyle cover I have seen in a long time. This Michael Kors frock from the SS 15 collection is the perfect choice for the June issue and its cover star.
This is everything; such a simple, strong and striking image of Laverne Cox taking center stage.
Amazing Outfits Aplenty at the Variety Emmy Studio
31 MarAward season has only just wrapped up, but there is another coming in a few months time and the Emmy chatter hum is already starting. The red carpet is part of why I adore award season, the other is all the pre-gaming with endless roundtables and GoldDerby one-on-one interviews. The actual winners and ceremony is far down the list and this is reserved for mostly outrage at the omissions.
Variety host an annual Emmy studio and while they have favored panels in the past (and they might still go down this route) over the weekend a variety of comedy and drama stars from network, cable and streaming platforms interviewed each other. While these videos aren’t available to watch just yet – I will definitely be discussing/posting those when they do – we can see what everyone was wearing and it is safe to say they ladies are killing it.
A Showtime foursome (although Allison Janney is there for Mom) with Don Cheadle, Claire Danes, Lizzy Caplan and Allison Janney. Claire Danes is wearing a fabulous check Erdem frock complete with the requisite pocketed goodness. Caplan’s lipstick game is strong with Janney’s glasses earn best accessory. And like most of the dudes at this thing Cheadle looks good, but in pretty standard attire.
There is a lot of “Yas Kween!” about this photo from Abbi Jacobson’s floral and leather jacket combo, the crop top/necklace pairing Ilana Glazer has opted for and Carrie Brownstein’s pink lipstick and tuxedo jacket. You look fine too, Fred.
Really excited to see Maggie Gyllenhaal taking part and talking The Honourable Woman as it was one of my favorite performances of last year. And Gyllenhaal is looking lovely in print with Liev Schreiber getting a whole lot of stripe sock points.
I love how giddy Taylor Schilling looks next to Jessica Lange while her all black ensemble with leather pants is exudes cool.
Major style and legend status at play here with Jane Fonda and Viola Davis; this is one chat I can’t wait to see.
And I really want to know what’s going on in this photo to make Jeffery Tambor look so concerned. Orange is a really great color on Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Thrilled there’s going to be an all women director’s discussion with Gail Mancuso, Jill Soloway, Lisa Cholodenko, Lesli Linka Glatter (director of Now and Then! Plus a whole lot of TV faves) and Michelle MacLaren. This will be another ‘soon as the video goes up I will post it on here’ situation. Ace floral and stripe top from Jill Soloway.
Well, this is just the best and there is so much joy to be had from Gina Rodriguez and Uzo Aduba taking a selfie together. Both women are in A+ dresses and that color on Aduba is everything.
Love Kerry Washington in Giambattista Valli pattern clashing polka dot/floral frock and that she’s gone for a colorful pair of lace pumps.
Another selfie and amazing outfit duo with Mindy Kaling and Taraji P. Henson. Vibrant yellow on Henson is stunning and Kaling’s matching skirt and top is super pretty.
Sticking to a designer favorite is Julianna Margulies in Narciso Rodriguez and this classic monochromatic take is really working for The Good Wife star.
Best of the Variety and BAFTA Pre-Emmy Red Carpets
24 AugAugust has been a relatively quiet month with most of the red carpet action coming from film projects filmed while on hiatus. Get ready for an influx of dresses as the Emmys are on Monday and the parties have already begun. Below are the best looks from the BAFTA Los Angeles TV Tea 2014 and Variety and Women in Film Emmy Nomination Celebration. With several pulling double duty at both events a couple of faces pop up twice. On trend is a mixture of all-black ensembles and super colorful affairs (with some showcasing both thanks to the two events). There are a lot of bad shoe choices and somehow three jumpsuits make the list (insert Home Alone cat face here).
Kerry Washington has been hitting style highs recently and this is another to add to that list. Going short in Michael Kors and fresh faced before the fancy frock night is understandable. This is striking in its simplicity and there’s a slight hint of sparkle when the flash hits the embellishments.
Another short take and the pre-Emmy parties are all about having fun before the big event and Orange is the New Black’s Samira Wiley is doing just this in a blurred effect number.
Julianna Margulies is always one of my most anticipated on the red carpet come award season and while she is playing it pretty safe; it is also a classic J-Marg look. Digging the bold lipstick too.
Michelle Dockery’s peplum Elie Saab black jumpsuit is also in the simple chic category at the Variety party.
However, earlier in the day Dockery has done the color splurge in a Roland Mouret crop top and skirt. The Teen Choice Awards don’t have the monopoly on crop tops (there is another coming up) and even though the skirt looks like a fancy table cloth Dockery pulls this off. Despite the matchy matchy shoe/skirt of it all these Christian Louboutin pumps are a footwear highlight.
If Kiernan Shipka’s Instagram is anything to go by these teen stars are set to takeover the world while having brunch and here she is once again with Sleepy Hollow’s Amandla Stenberg. Both manage to look super cute and slightly edgy at the same time in their dark attire.
Kiernan Shipka also attended the BAFTA Tea in a summery Giambattista Valli cocktail dress and she will be one to look out for tomorrow as she continues to hit all the right sartorial notes.
Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggat does color blocking in Altuzarra mixing bold red and orange with grey. Black sandals are a popular choice on both red carpets (not in the bad shoe category) and it is still summer after all.
At first I thought this was a dress, instead it is a Christian Dior jumpsuit with one leg much wider than the other and Ashley Madekwe pulls off Dior’s latest attempt to wrinkle our brains (remember JLaw’s half skirt/pants number?!). One reason this works is because it’s all one color and a striking shade of blue at that. Plus the pockets, always the pockets.
Keeping in the jumpsuit/pocket territory and Anna Chlumsky’s Veronica Beard outfit reminds me of the Hannibal bathroom location from season one (they’re not even that similar, but that’s where my brain jumped to). This is not a bad thing as those tiles are gorgeous as is this pattern.
Another BAFTA/Variety double! Lizzy Caplan is wearing a bold chartreuse Cushnie et Ochs frock and works this difficult shade by pairing it with scarlet pumps. Sheer tends to cause a wrinkled nose effect and part of me would love to see this as a strapless gown.
Switching things up and the Wes Gordon houndstooth pencil skirt and long sleeve crop top makes me think of a Virginia Johnson outfit shifted from 1956 to 2014. Paired with burgundy Christian Louboutin ‘Bootypump’ ankle boots – which I am now coveting – makes this a sophisticated and fun take on office to party chic.
Emmy weekend also reminds me which shows I need to catch up on and Fargo is top of this list. I’ve heard so much about Allison Tolman’s performance and she looks lovely on the BAFTA Tea red carpet in a lace blue frock. A more colorful shoe choice (basically anything but beige) would have been preferable.
More beige shoe sadness with Rachelle Lefevre, however her dress is enough to distract and looks like the clothing version of sediment layers. This also doesn’t sound that great I realize, but trust me it is. So much hair envy.
Color blocking with a dotty twist and Michelle Monaghan’s red and orange J. Mendel frock is another striking take on this trend.
Aaron Paul, Christina Hendricks and Allison Williams Cover Variety
18 JunEarlier this week the role of guest star was in focus as part of the SAG “Conversations” series and now Variety is showcasing supporting actors. We’re in the somewhat protracted period of pre-Emmy nominations as the recent season of TV is being discussed and analysed by various sites; trade publications like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter have delivered extensive roundtable conversations and print/digital articles.
Variety has chosen three actors who play supporting characters on critically acclaimed shows; one of these shows is over (Breaking Bad), however it is still very much in contention for the Emmys this year. Aaron Paul’s current stint on TV is no more and Christina Hendricks’ is coming to an end relatively soon as they are shooting what I believe is the last episode of Mad Men. I am sure this will feature heavily in the awards discussion this time next year as we won’t get to see the final 7 until 2015.
The third cover is occupied by Girls’ Allison Williams and I expect her inclusion might be met with some eye rolls and questions of “Why her?” There are of course plenty of other supporting actors who could take her position who are more likely to receive an Emmy nomination (pretty much all of the OITNB cast), but I would also argue that Williams has been incredible on the latest season of Girls as Marnie experienced a steady stream of humiliation (YouTube videos) in her portrayal of a character who is so incredibly unaware of her many awful qualities. The comments Williams makes in the interview might not endear people any further as she mentions that Girls was the first audition she did upon arriving in Los Angeles, while both Hendricks and Paul discuss their long journey to success.
The cover themselves are pretty cool as they show a double exposure like shot of each actor – the ladies get a close up and a body shot, whereas Paul looks like he is dancing – and while the article itself focuses on how strong supporting roles can lead to greater opportunities, characters like Joan, Jesse or Marnie should not be scoffed at. Not that this article is necessarily doing this in an overt manner, but it does have a hint of movies over TV to it and by now we should be at place beyond this outdated value judgement, even if it is in the subtext.
Variety “Power of Women” Red Carpet
7 OctVariety’s fifth annual Power of Women luncheon was held on Friday and honored 7 women who have used their star power for philanthropic work and after Amy Poehler delivered an important message about her work with Worldwide Orphans (that you can watch at the bottom) she joked that “Thank you to all the bossy, right amount of crazy women in this room. Giving to charity is good for your skin and makes your ass smaller.”
Aisha Tyler hosted the event and the recipients as you can see in the photo above are Jennifer Hudson, Elizabeth Banks, the aforementioned Amy Poehler, Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington, Amy Pascal and Nicole Kidman. This is an impressive group of women and you can find about their charity work here.
Turning over to the red carpet at this luncheon and it’s good to see an array of styles and colors among the honorees with host Aisha Tyler working the neon pink to maximum effect. After a week of many public appearances and some dubious dress choices (the big gingham number springs to mind) Kerry Washington wore a Vince Camuto cocktail dress that reminds us why she is top of the best dressed lists. The gold polka dots are an instant favorite here and studded Christian Louboutin ‘Malabar Hill’ pumps add an extra bit of flare to the outfit. Elizabeth Banks also looks stunning in this red Dolce & Gabbana top and skirt with lace detail. I’m so excited about what Elizabeth Banks will be bringing to the huge Hunger Games press tour next month and all things Effie related. I could however, do without the nude Louboutin’s that she is wearing at this luncheon.
Some of the cast of Scandal were on hand to support Kerry Washington and Darby Stanchfield’s super pretty Valentino pastel graphic floral design is my favorite outfit from this luncheon. Stanchfield has been on crazy good form with her red carpet choices recently and her new look on the season 3 premiere of Scandal is definitely giving me some red hair envy.
Amy Poehler looks great in this teal long sleeved Beckley by Melissa with Worldwide Orphan founder Dr. Jane Aronson, who Poehler first met in 2009 at a Glamour magazine Woman of the Year event. You can watch a video of Amy Poehler talking about this cause, how great TV is at the moment as well as part of her speech. Did it suddenly get dusty in here?
