Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

20 Nov

Welcome once again to Behind the Insta-Scenes! Bringing you a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off) antics.

Included in the roundup this week are location shoots with swoony grins, superhero selfies and a mother/daughter reunion.

The Mindy Project is shooting in San Francisco this week and Mindy Kaling has been sharing treats aplenty – amazing costumes ahoy – including this very romantic selfie with co-star Chris Messina. This is a frame worthy photo for Mindy’s apartment.

Same gorgeous location, but switching things up with a moody catalogue model pose.

A lot gets up Eli’s nose on The Good Wife including this very cool accidental shot.

Last week The CW revealed what Katie Cassidy’s superhero costume would look like on Arrow and here’s a close up of the mask (along with co-star Colton Haynes). Two thumbs up for the lipstick and dramatic eye flicks.

Cougar Town is coming to an end and Busy Philipps pays tribute to hair stylist Michael Anton for all the crazy, fun hairstyles Laurie has had, including this very colorful ‘do.

So this isn’t from the Mad Men set – they are at the AMC Holiday Party – but I couldn’t resist this mother/daughter picture of happiness. As if Matthew Weiner would allow on set photos this far in advance of the final half of the season premiere.

This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off) antics.

This week we have the Broad City ladies still on tour, a teen movie queen on The Mindy Project, final table reads, prison superheroes and other set observations.

Julia Stiles is guest starring on The Mindy Project as an old friend of Danny’s and a Morgan love interest. I hope she drops some Kat Stratford dance moves.

http://instagram.com/p/vR4DP7N6qu/?modal=true

Ilana and her big clear bag of thrown out bagels is one of many amazing visual Broad City first year moments and a fan made a bagel plushie, which is also all kinds of awesome. The new season is just two months away and I cannot wait.

Final table read time for season 2 of Looking and January is going to be an excellent TV month as this returns at the start of 2015. Look at how adorable these dudes are.

Ryan Hansen’s TBT is going back to season 3 of Burning Love and if you ignore Ken Marino’s drool then it becomes a rather lovely cast shot. June Diane Raphael to be cast in everything please.

There is also a video to accompany this Morello doing the whole superhero posing thing, as Yael Stone enjoys some downtime on set.

Doing the same but in a much more sedated manner are the New Girl cast and it is a screen checking party in this photo from Erin O’Malley.

Lucy Liu revealed the view from the Elementary greenroom when they were on a night shoot this week and that’s a whole lot of New York office blockage with the Chrysler Building making an appearance. It’s a very hypnotic shot.

So many boxes all bearing the Greendale logo and this prop tease is courtesy of Gillian Jacobs.

Kroll Show is another January returnee (Wednesday 14 – the same night as Broad City!) and this brief glimpse is enough to send me down a PubLIZity YouTube rabbit hole.

This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off set) antics.

Halloween dress up from last week (Michael Sheen and Sarah Silverman are still my Halloween costume faves), heading out of town, baby animals and Christmas comes early when you’re shooting a TV show. Plus various other on set hijinks.

http://instagram.com/p/u6tNbRpXn3/?modal=true

I have no idea what Steven Pasquale is doing with his arms in this shot, but here is the Alicia Florrick campaign team including the very best body woman there is.

http://instagram.com/p/vAdrwdipek/?modal=true

Broad City Live is very much a thing I would want to see. For now here is a picture of Ilana on the tour bus and the second season has been given a premiere date – January 14. Happy New Year indeed!

It’s all smiles on the Elementary set between Sherlock’s former and current protege. Instantly loving the difference in style between Kitty and Joan.

More from Elementary as Indiana Jones, Melanie Daniels and Maverick all made an appearance for Halloween.

http://instagram.com/p/u9lCKXNMyi/?modal=true

Hannah Simone was on Conan this week and animal expert David Mizejewski appeared the same night; hence the super cute piglet. Simone’s expression and dress are both on point.

Another shot of Hannah Simone this time from New Girl makeup artist Jorjee Douglass showing Michelle DeMilt working with Simone during a bar scene (for New Girl makeup tips head here).

The Orange is the New Black ladies are prolific Instagram users and it makes me so happy when a group photo like this one is posted. Thanks Uzo Aduba!

It is only the Best Fucking News Team and after a trip to Austin last week, The Daily Show went live (as did The Colbert Report) for the midterm election results. Doing their best Queen album cover shot.

Christmas has come to The Mindy Project and this means super sparkly dresses are on the styling menu with Kaling wearing an original creation by costume designer Salvador Perez.

The Wish List: Electric Animal Prints on The Mindy Project

5 Nov

Mindy Lahiri hasn’t met a pattern* she doesn’t like and it is one of the reasons why TV Ate My Wardrobe loves the costume design on The Mindy Project. Before the start of season 3 we gave Mindy the Fantasy Costuming treatment and The focus was on both clashing prints and bold color featuring outfits for the office, dates and lounging around.

One such item for a days off is the Kate Spade New York ‘Cyber Cheetah’ sweater in emperor blue and while we picked the right design, Mindy went for the more work appropriate ‘Cyber Cheetah Dawson‘ dress version in the same color from this collection. Pairing it with a leather jacket gives it an edge and the matching thin blue headband adds a simple touch of femininity without going full Blair Waldorf hair accessorizing.

*The Cut has produced an extensive rundown of the “100 Most Insane Patterns on The Mindy Project in Order of Insanity” that is well worth checking out.

The Mindy Project 3.06 blue dressPlus bonus Danny in short shorts running towards Mindy in the background. There is disconnect between them at this moment in “Caramel Princess Time” due to a difference in how they view punctuality, but the matching blues shows some symmetry.

Welcome once again to Behind the Insta-Scenes! A new feature offering a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off set) antics.

Amazing outfits, a returning show and on set affection are all included in this week’s round up of the best of Instagram.

Cat socks! Colton Haynes is giving good and appropriate mesmerized face to these sock beauties (as modeled by Felicity Smoak herself Emily Bett Rickards).

The dudes of Looking are making it hard to pick a side when it comes to the Patrick decision of Richie versus Kevin (okay Kevin already has a boyfriend, but it is still a hard choice). Here are Russell Tovey and Jonathan Groff being super adorable while filming season 2.

Ticking off the clones on the Orphan Black set and after an appearance by Alison last week, Cosima is popping up to say hello.

http://instagram.com/p/uqgFMxpQ3I/?modal=true

More Mindy outfit delights on The Mindy Project and this patterned delight is by Issa. Not a real rooftop.

http://instagram.com/p/uvM65_DvBr/

So this isn’t technically a TV set, nor is Taylor Swift necessarily a TV star (she did pop up on New Girl) but this week has been wall to wall Taylor thanks to the release of her new album 1989 (which I’ve been playing on repeat) and this Marco De Vincenzo pleated rainbow sparkly skirt is everything. Taylor’s is autumnal in tone and it is also available in purple hues.

http://instagram.com/p/usfoAyPaeN/?modal=true

A selfie for Selfie and this show has become one of my favorites from the new fall offerings; Karen Gillan is a big part of this. It is super charming and makes me laugh a bunch, but I fear the low ratings might make it go the way of the big cancellation disappointment from a show with a terrible name last season. I still miss you Trophy Wife.

Elementary returns tonight for season 3 and here is Jonny Lee Miller hanging around on set (I’ll get my coat).

This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off set) antics.

This week we’ve got a whole array of photos ranging from press day outfits, a shout out to Spirit Day, prop hair (and where it is stored) and a maybe flashback hairstyle.

Dressed all in purple for Spirit Day and somewhat suburban crime duo Alison (Tatiana Maslany) and Donnie (Kristian Bruun) are rocking this color alongside Orphan Black co-creator Graeme Manson.

Before the excellent and super smutty Hannibal PaleyFest panel Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy and Caroline Dhavernas took part in a gif reaction Q&A of sorts for the official Hannibal Tumblr. They also had a Will and Hannibal Funko doll on hand and some mini white boards to deliver messages to fans.

http://instagram.com/p/ub97zCtM5P/?modal=true

New Girl wasn’t on this week, but we do have a teaser from Hannah Simone. If the shorter ‘do is anything to go by I think we could be getting a Hannah Simone (rather than the younger actress who plays Cece and looks exactly like Hannah Simone) featuring Cece at school flashback.

Oh, hello! Kroll Show will be back for a third season soon and this Comedy Central post suggests the return of Gil and George. Will there be too much tuna once again?

http://instagram.com/p/uRNVVBpQwC/?modal=true

Mindy Kaling’s press day attire is just as cute as her Mindy Lahiri’s threads and these Piamita separates are a delight.

http://instagram.com/p/uZinY5McDU/?modal=true

Watch out when you go looking for strawberries on the set of The Walking Dead as you might end up with your hand in a bag full of Rick’s beard hair.

The third Rookie yearbook was released yesterday and the ladies from Broad City are showing off their featured pages. Having bought the previous two editions, I can say that I will definitely be picking this up even if I’m still a smidge older than the demo.

Welcome once again to Behind the Insta-Scenes! This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off set) antics.

The inaugural Behind the Insta-Scenes post was an all comedy affair and we’ve mixed it up with a couple of shots from some more dramatic shows, plus a directorial debut and this week a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite joined Instagram which is cause for celebration.

Play guess The Good Wife plot from Alan Cumming’s shot of co-star Julianna Margulies wearing an apron and latex gloves while sitting on a tiny plastic chair.

http://instagram.com/p/t6qRY1jaXs/?modal=true

This one from Nicole Beharie seems more clear cut and I don’t think anyone will be too surprised to see snakes on Sleepy Hollow.

Diane Kruger is now on Instagram and she has already delivered on fashion, Pacey and amazing cat photos. The highlight so far is this photo from German themed party Kruger organised for The Bridge crew (oh hey FX please renew this show) after Germany won the World Cup. So adorable.

The second episode of A to Z is on tonight and Ben Feldman’s reminder concentrates on co-star Cristin Milioti; all I can focus on is her amazingly long eyelashes. While I thought the first episode was only okay, I am totally charmed by Feldman and Milioti even if the premise isn’t so promising and so I will definitely keep on watching.

http://instagram.com/p/ttvqMpQPhc/?modal=true

Busy Philipps directed an episode of Cougar Town this week (including her own daughter in the scene above) and she did so in style wearing a vintage JC Penny ’50s dress.

http://instagram.com/p/t0b4FspQ_f/?modal=true

Our weekly installment of Mindy Project set shenanigans has Mindy Kaling learning lines in an Equipment tartan sweatshirt that I really want in my own wardrobe now it is finally cold enough for sweaters.

Plaid and Polka Dots: Get the Mindy Project Pattern Clash

7 Oct

The Mindy Project always delivers when it comes to costume design as there is a strong sense of who Mindy is when it comes to her clothing choices. Mindy very much dresses for herself and this is part of her charm as she’s not going to shy away from something because it is too bold or sparkly. The confidence Mindy exudes in her attitude towards fashion is infectious and this is a character who embraces pattern clashing with open arms. Mindy Lahiri is not Mindy Kaling, however they do share similar style pointers and when discussing clothes in Vogue, Kaling explains “It’s really tempting to not take chances. But I don’t want to be fearful” and I think this is a sentiment her character shares.

In “Crimes & Misdemeanors & Ex-Boyfriends” Mindy wore an array of patterns including floral, houndstooth and diamonds, but it was the combination of plaid and polka dots that really caught my eye.

IMG_1014Plaid and polka dots rolls nicely off the tongue, however it is a pattern combination that doesn’t necessarily suggest compatibility. Mindy shows they can be worn together and the impact is heightened even further as a result of her plaid color choice. The shirt is by Michael Kors and I think they made the right decision to tuck it in and thereby lose the tie-front detail. Fall is the ideal time for plaid shirts and thanks to Scandal I’ve been practically drooling over the many shirts Rails has on offer. Gap is also a pretty good alternative for something more affordable.

Skirt wise Mindy is wearing Ann Taylor and when it comes to plaid and polka dots there is an endless amount of size and color combinations; if you want to ease yourself into pattern clashing of this kind then it doesn’t have to be as bold as Mindy’s ensemble.

We’ve picked out a few different black and white polka dot skirts ranging in polka dot size, style and price.

Uniqlo polka dotFirst up miniature polka dots from Uniqlo and a skirt I actually own (I’m going through a pleated phase at the moment) and this is a good way to start print clashing as the pattern is so small.

Alice + OliviaNow for something more dramatic in both hemline and polka dot size from Alice + Olivia; even the model is embracing the pattern clashing with checks. Monochromatic top and bottom produces an arresting and somewhat hypnotic image.

Giambattista ValliAnother thing about polka dots other than size/color is the arrangement as they can be in precise rows like the Alice + Olivia skirt or as with this Giambattista Valli the design is more chaotic. The box pleat detail gives a slightly flared appearance and it’s a fun take on this style.

Welcome to Behind the Insta-Scenes! A new feature offering a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes sneak peeks from future episodes, what’s airing this week and flashing back to the past. It’s a comedy heavy first edition including The Mindy ProjectParks and Recreation, The Daily Show and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Starting with the woman whose Instagram we have been pouring over all summer for a multitude of reasons – amazing outfits both on screen and off, plus so much Chris Messina – and the one we refer to as the gift that keeps on giving; Mindy Kaling.

http://instagram.com/p/tjV3qcJQ96/

First up a shot from episode 8 including its title “Diary of a Mad Indian Woman” and that phone call must be important considering what is also going on in the shot and is being ignored.

http://instagram.com/p/tozgwVJQ0C/?modal=true

A super cute outfit including a strawberry print top, Chanel purse and red booties (coveting these so hard).

Parks and Recreation is currently shooting its final season so expect plenty of photos from this set. This one is courtesy of Retta and gives me a much needed April Ludgate costuming fix.

More from the Parks and Rec set and Aziz Ansari gifts us this fun looking super swish moment with Retta – the return of Treat Yo’ Self Day?

Lena Dunham is doing the big Not that Kind of Girl book tour at the moment and this includes stopping by The Daily Show and hanging out with former Girls guest star Jessica Williams.

To celebrate the return of Brooklyn Nine-Nine Chelsea Peretti shared this heart filled shot with co-star Stephanie Beatriz. More booties (and slippers) to add to my wish list.

The Mindy Project and the Rom-Com Narrative Part 5

18 Sep

A year has passed since the first Mindy Project and the Rom-Com Narrative column and what started as a standalone piece has produced multiple parts and spinoffs (incorporating New Girl and the “What Next?”). The Mindy Project plays with the rom-com formula with direct references to Nora Ephron classics like When Harry Met Sally while using traditional rom-com devices such as voiceover and subverting the genre through a strong awareness of the common tropes. In the first episode of season 3 big steps have been made as Danny and Mindy have progressed from friends, to lovers to exes and now to a couple who are not hiding their relationship from their co-workers. Smooth sailing from here then, right?

The Mindy Project 3.01Well that wouldn’t be interesting would it? There are plenty of obstacles and conflicts ahead for this new couple; the biggest one being how diametrically opposite they are about pretty much everything besides how they feel about each other. Last season Danny went through a stage of not wanting anyone to know about their relationship and then he tried to use the ‘you’re my best friend and I don’t want to lose you’ excuse as a reason to split up. Mindy saw through Danny’s scared BS and she didn’t just take him back when he simply tried to kiss her. This was one heartbreak that really hurt and so it required a little more than Danny simply responding in a possessive manner to the new dude in Mindy’s life.

They are a couple now, haters (bitches) and as I have mentioned throughout this rom-com series the “will they/won’t they” then turns into a “What next?” as they have to deal with what normally comes after the credits of a movie. The story doesn’t just end with smooching at the top of the Empire State Building.

The new season opens with Danny as the narrator mentioning the unlikelihood of this coupling when the show started and his assertion that they are very different is backed up with Mindy’s portion of the voiceover. Mindy likes to share and this is what lies at the heart of their first fight this season; it doesn’t matter that Mindy is very complimentary about Danny’s technique as it still makes him incredibly uncomfortable. Throw in a secret stripping past plus a piece of office gossip and we’ve got our first Mindy and Danny raging argument of season 3 as Danny tells Mindy that he can’t trust her. Trust is a relationship dealbreaker so are things looking precarious already?

[Source]

Far from it and while I am sure that somewhere down the line there will be a string of misunderstandings that might lead to something more contentious, this disagreement ends up with Danny spilling a lot more about himself including his Diamond Dan stripping past (which not only paid for medical school, but also allowed him to pay the mortgage on his mother’s house) and that he does have a middle name. His middle name is Alan after his dad and last season we found out more about his fractured relationship with his father with Mindy getting to witness Danny’s emotionally vulnerable side. The first time Danny kissed Mindy was on the plane ride home after this trip to see Danny’s father; boundaries got dropped all over the place.

Part of the appeal of this couple is the back and forth banter, which on occasion crosses the line with a derogatory remark about appearance such as Danny telling Mindy “get your big ass in there now” in the season 3 premiere. Comments like this cause much furrowing of the brow; Danny does refer to himself “as kind of a dick back then” in his opening narration and these moments do still slip in and on this occasion his annoyance at Mindy’s inability to keep secrets causes this unpleasant outburst. Danny is rough around the edges – not an excuse for his behavior, but an observation – and yet those edges have softened.

The list he has prepared is a big step, as is Mindy’s confession explaining why she has been so vocal about their relationship “I want it to be real and the more real it seems, the less likely it is that it could all get taken away from me.” Mindy wears her romantic temperament on her sleeve, but this level of honesty and vulnerability is rare from this character too. This statement solidifies their commitment to each other and it also signifies to the audience that we shouldn’t expect a break up in the next few episodes; they are at least in this for some sort of long haul. It is a welcome gesture as sometimes with a “will they/won’t they” couple it is easy to feel emotionally manipulated if there is a constant stream of “oh we’re almost a couple, now we’re not, now we are, oops broken up again” shenanigans. You know what else is a welcome gesture? This.

[Source – includes whole sequence]

As I said at the start of this piece conflict and obstacles should continue, but there has to be a reason for it. Danny and Mindy as an opposites attract coupling should provide plenty of material for this, however scenes like the one on the fire escape are important and still offer opportunity for absurdist/dark humor such as the kitchen knife Mindy accidentally drops followed by the sound of sirens. This first episode back is promising and this pairing is the strongest/most consistent on The Mindy Project; now they are a couple there are a new series of challenges and I am hopeful that this creative team will blast any Moonlighting curse nonsense out of the water so we can stop citing this a reason why a “will they/won’t they” shouldn’t progress to “What next?”
