Out of the Box: Look of the Week

10 Apr

Another magazine heavy week with Mad Men and Orphan Black doing the final promo push. Plus pretty dresses aplenty from various panels, premieres and events.

Tatiana Maslany AdweekTatiana Maslany gives good face on the cover of Adweek and a thoughtful response to a question relating to Strong Female Characters:

“The characters all have a complexity to them, an unapologetic individuality. They’re not physically superhuman and emotionless and without flaws. Having a strong female character doesn’t mean she’s beyond suffering and fragility. There’s a fearlessness. That to me is strong writing for women. It defies gender.”

Not the first time I have swooned (nor will it be the last) at how she talks about the multiple roles she plays on Orphan Black and what it means to be a Strong Female Character (and why this terminology is outdated). Maslany also discusses whether the show is a feminist piece and while she doesn’t thing that’s how it begun life she believes that it is now adding “Women aren’t often the default in movies, TV, media—there’s often very limited space for them. But it’s exciting to mine these stories and see a show that puts women at the center of it.”

Tatiana MaslanyBonus smiley Maslany and her favorite show on TV is one we definitely agree with “I love Broad City. It’s that unapologetic approach where the characters are not defined by their gender. It’s all about their personalities, sense of humor, flaws and friendship.” For more from this Adweek interview head here.

IMG_1497A stylized Stylist cover with Kiernan Shipka going full 1960s with a Twiggy homage. This makeup looks great on Shipka even if it ages her up by quite a bit. Not too sure about the velvet headscarf but I’m guessing Shipka didn’t want to go full pixie (and there are plenty of Twiggy headscarf modelling shots). In the interview Shipka reveals that she has the necklace Don gave Sally with SD on it, although she hasn’t found an occasion to wear it yet. There was sadly no Sally (or Betty) in the mid-season Mad Men premiere so I’m holding out hope she will appear in this Sunday’s episode.

Julia Louis-DreyfusJulia Louis-Dreyfus goes full leopard print at the Paley Center ‘Evening with Veep event and as is generally the case with JLD she is killing it. I’m a little so so on the footwear, but when wearing a bold print nude heels are fine I guess.

Lake BellNow here’s a pair of fantastic shoes and Lake Bell’s choice of multicolor Christian Louboutin mules work wonders with her equally bold orange Dior tuxedo inspired frock at a New York screening of Dior and I.

Lily JamesAnother pair of so-so shoes with a fantastic dress as Lily James does the final leg of the Cinderella promo tour in Tokyo. James has worn plenty of princessy frocks recently and it is good to see her in something with a shorter hemline, but just as pretty in star covered Valentino.

Vanessa HudgensVanessa Hudgens is ditching crochet attire and Coachella this year for Broadway and at the Gigi opening night after party she makes a dramatic impact in a stunning Alice + Olivia gown. A sleek blunt bob and dark lip color all add up to create one of her best looks yet.

Amazing Outfits Aplenty at the Variety Emmy Studio

31 Mar

Award season has only just wrapped up, but there is another coming in a few months time and the Emmy chatter hum is already starting. The red carpet is part of why I adore award season, the other is all the pre-gaming with endless roundtables and GoldDerby one-on-one interviews. The actual winners and ceremony is far down the list and this is reserved for mostly outrage at the omissions.

Variety host an annual Emmy studio and while they have favored panels in the past (and they might still go down this route) over the weekend a variety of comedy and drama stars from network, cable and streaming platforms interviewed each other. While these videos aren’t available to watch just yet – I will definitely be discussing/posting those when they do – we can see what everyone was wearing and it is safe to say they ladies are killing it.

Don, Claire, Lizzy, AllisonA Showtime foursome (although Allison Janney is there for Mom) with Don Cheadle, Claire Danes, Lizzy Caplan and Allison Janney. Claire Danes is wearing a fabulous check Erdem frock complete with the requisite pocketed goodness. Caplan’s lipstick game is strong with Janney’s glasses earn best accessory. And like most of the dudes at this thing Cheadle looks good, but in pretty standard attire.

Variety panel - Fred, Abbi, Ilana, CarrieThere is a lot of “Yas Kween!” about this photo from Abbi Jacobson’s floral and leather jacket combo, the crop top/necklace pairing Ilana Glazer has opted for and Carrie Brownstein’s pink lipstick and tuxedo jacket. You look fine too, Fred.

Maggie and LievReally excited to see Maggie Gyllenhaal taking part and talking The Honourable Woman as it was one of my favorite performances of last year. And Gyllenhaal is looking lovely in print with Liev Schreiber getting a whole lot of stripe sock points.

Jessica and TaylorI love how giddy Taylor Schilling looks next to Jessica Lange while her all black ensemble with leather pants is exudes cool.

Jane and ViolaMajor style and legend status at play here with Jane Fonda and Viola Davis; this is one chat I can’t wait to see.

Jeffrey Tambor and JLDAnd I really want to know what’s going on in this photo to make Jeffery Tambor look so concerned. Orange is a really great color on Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Director Variety chatThrilled there’s going to be an all women director’s discussion with Gail Mancuso, Jill Soloway, Lisa Cholodenko, Lesli Linka Glatter (director of Now and Then! Plus a whole lot of TV faves) and Michelle MacLaren. This will be another ‘soon as the video goes up I will post it on here’ situation. Ace floral and stripe top from Jill Soloway.

Uzo and Gina VarietyWell, this is just the best and there is so much joy to be had from Gina Rodriguez and Uzo Aduba taking a selfie together. Both women are in A+ dresses and that color on Aduba is everything.

Kerry Washington VarietyLove Kerry Washington in Giambattista Valli pattern clashing polka dot/floral frock and that she’s gone for a colorful pair of lace pumps.

Taraji and MindyAnother selfie and amazing outfit duo with Mindy Kaling and Taraji P. Henson. Vibrant yellow on Henson is stunning and Kaling’s matching skirt and top is super pretty.

Julianna MarguliesSticking to a designer favorite is Julianna Margulies in Narciso Rodriguez and this classic monochromatic take is really working for The Good Wife star.

Best of the 2014 Emmy Red Carpet: Bold Color

26 Aug

The 2014 Emmy Red Carpet coverage continues and now we’ve addressed the stunning black and white frocks from the evening it is time to revel in all the vibrant colors that were on display.

Teyonah ParrisI wanted to use a photo of this dress in posed motion as Mad Men’s Teyonah Parris takes what could be an awkward dress by Christian Siriano and has fun with it. The chartreuse skirt and candy colored bodice make this a standout look and one Parris wears well.

Claire Danes and Hugh DancyLet’s take a look at the red gowns of the night of which there were many. Claire Danes is wearing my favorite with an embellished Givenchy frock including lace cut outs, belting and foliage looking collar. All of these factors combined could be a bit much, however Danes looks elegant. Good lipstick choice too. Bonus Hugh Dancy with added conflicted ‘lack of facial hair’ feelings.

January Jones EmmysYou can always count on January Jones to wear something dramatic and she does just this in this patterned and pocketed Prabal Gurung delight. A terrific shade of lip color for this dress, but what was up with her hair?

JLDMoving from bad hair to amazing with Julia Louis-Dreyfus (another attic painting candidate) in a raspberry colored Carolina Herrera and like Claire Danes she has a thin belt to accentuate her silhouette. The buckles don’t stop here as the straps also use this detail and JLD shone on the night for smooches, speeches and her gown.

Keke PalmerAnother dramatic and stunning Rubin Singer frock with Keke Palmer showing how to wear a whole lot of dress with simple accessories and makeup/hair. This cobalt blue is striking and Palmer is a standout.

Allison Tolman EmmysAlso making an impression in an arresting color is Allison Tolman in an emerald Romona Keveza one-shouldered frock. Such a good choice for the first time Emmy nominee.

Natalie DormerNatalie Dormer strikes an almost Wonder Woman like J. Mendel orange topped delight – if it looks familiar it’s because Michelle Monaghan wore something from the same collection on Saturday – and Dormer’s hair deserves a special mention for distracting me from some of the terrible styles on display.

Kerry Washington EmmysAnother orange frock and Kerry Washington’s Prada getup is one that I keep changing my mind on, so I’m including it while I sit on the fence. I like it in motion and the sparkly mini skirt element is really appealing; I’m just not sure if it is trying to do too much and failing to tie it all together.

Anna GunnAnother of the dramatic leg slit trend and Anna Gunn’s Jenny Packham frock is a color block and patterned beauty. Digging her Edie Parker ‘Lara’ clutch and gold sandals too as she celebrates the last Breaking Bad Emmy outing.

Michelle Dockery EmmysMichelle Dockery is always a red carpet favorite and as with her Roland Mouret outfit at the weekend this Rosie Assoulin is working a fancy table cloth look. I realize this doesn’t sound like a positive, but I really love this frock and the colors on Dockery.

Allison JanneyVelvet in August is a bold choice from Allison Janney and even though it bears a resemblance to a Quality Street, Janney is working it like a double winner in one year should.

Best of the 2014 Annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner Red Carpet

4 May

The White Correspondents’ Association Dinner attracts an eclectic assortment of star power with journalists, politicians and actors all rubbing shoulders. Instagram is awash with selfies of the casts of Scandal and Veep posing for photos in the environment they pretend to work in for a living and there are plenty of starstruck expressions. We’re going to take a look at the best red carpet looks on display last night.

Julianna MarguliesThe red carpet featured several classic black gowns including a super chic looking Julianna Margulies in vintage Jean Dessès. Sometimes keeping it simple gives the best results and accessorizing with black pumps, Roger Vivier clutch and silver jewels does just this. A simple updo and a splash of crimson lip color is the perfect way to set off this ensemble.

JLDVeep’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus also opted for black in Antonio Berardi with a bodice adorned with crystals adding a slight hint of shimmer to the frock. Adding more glitz to this outfit is the gunmetal pearl Edie Parker clutch with a sparkly silver trim. Julia Louis-Dreyfus looks radiant.

LupitaPolka dots and peplum for Lupita Nyong’o as she also does the black gown trend with a twist in Oscar de la Renta from the Fall 2014 collection, which TV Ate My Wardrobe adored. Lupita continues to take the fashion world by storm and the hot pink lip color is another excellent and striking choice. And there’s more from Lupita…

http://instagram.com/p/nj2oVuJQ3W/

“They fought crime with a bold lip.” As this photo from Mindy Kaling’s Instagram shows, Mindy went with both strong lip and dress colors, with Zooey Deschanel and Lupita Nyong’o doing monochrome in two very different ways. I would definitely watch a show based on this simple crime fighting premise.

Darby StanchfieldIt’s not just black dresses on the red carpet with Scandal’s Darby Stanchfield showing green gowns and red locks makes for an excellent combination. From the Alberta Ferretti Spring 2014 collection this ethereal look is enhanced by the embroidered floral beaded waist and shoulder accents.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

28 Mar

It’s week two of Paleyfest and this has delivered more fantastic outfits from the stars of shows like Mad MenMasters of SexAgents of SHIELDThe Mindy Project, Community and Veep. Here are the ones that stood out.

The Paley Center For Media's PaleyFest 2014 Honoring "Mad Men"The women of Mad Men work a variety of styles both on and off the show; however they don’t look like they are attending different events which can sometimes be an issue at these panels. Kiernan Shipka is once again showing that being a teenager doesn’t take away any fashion credibility and her Dolce & Gabbana floral dress is once again age appropriate and on point. Christina Hendricks does a nice job of honoring L’Wren Scott in an amazing green dress by the designer that flatters and accentuates those famous curves.

Jessica Paré is the most high fashion of the group (the absent January Jones also vies for this spot) and this Roksanda Ilincic frock looks pretty standard from this angle. What this shot is missing out is how extreme the half-wrap orange fold is and this is a dress that looks amazing in a lot of photos and a mess in others. Paré pulls it off even if I’m not in love with her shoes. Elisabeth Moss is showing off her fun side, which we have been seeing on the red carpet and in the recent New York magazine profile in a black mini Emilio Pucci number. The white lace panel and bow detail adds a hint of vintage and combining bold red lips and shoes adds that extra something to the outfit.

Chloe BennetI really shouldn’t like this Mason by Michelle Mason jumpsuit that Agent of SHIELD’s Chloe Bennet is wearing as I’ve made my feelings on jumpsuit’s clear last week and black tends to be the only kind of jumpsuit that I could even consider. For some reason I think this looks really great and I’m just going to go with it. The slightly different blue pumps make sure it’s not too matchy matchy and I am forever a sucker for pockets.

Annaleigh AshfordNow this is more my usual speed (pockets again) and Annaleigh Ashford from Masters of Sex looks incredibly charming in this Novis dress. I was worried the red pumps might be a step too far, but the more I look at them, the more they work. The variety of textures, pattern and color make this a frock to covet and I’m excited that Ashford’s Betty is returning for season 2.

Mindy Kaling and Chris MessinaThe Mindy Project is back next week after they left us on a kissing cliffhanger in January and here is a sneak peek of how adorable Chris Messina and Mindy Kaling look together. Kaling is wearing a beautiful emerald green jacquard Topshop high-waisted skirt and crop top; she explains in this month’s Vogue that “It’s really tempting to not take chances. But I don’t want to be fearful.” This sentiment sums up Kaling’s outfit decisions well and I love how she embraces fashion in this way even if it doesn’t always work. On this occasion it definitely does and this is great color on her.

Gillian JacobsAs Britta Perry, Gillian Jacobs doesn’t get to wear a whole array of party frocks – don’t get me wrong I love her endless supply of striped sweaters, plaid shirts and jeans – so at the Community panel it is good to see her bring it in House of Holland. The coral and navy starburst disco dress is a bold, fun choice.

Julia Louis Dreyfus PaleyFestVeep returns in a couple of weeks and it’s yet another show I need to catch up on (Game of Thrones is giving me so much side eye right about now). Julia Louis-Dreyfus looks super sophisticated in this charcoal grey getup; the black pattern and belting are both flattering and stops it from becoming just a dress for the office.

Best of the 2014 Golden Globes Red Carpet

13 Jan

So the Golden Globes are over and Tina Fey summed it up best with this closing comment “This was the beautiful mess we hoped it would be.” Random winners and drunken speeches aside we’re going to take a look at our favorite red carpet looks from the TV ladies – and one movie star we can’t leave out. Here are TV Ate My Wardrobe’s top 10 picks for best gowns. There’s a special Tina Fey and Amy Poehler style post coming shortly.

Julianna MarguliesJulianna Margulies didn’t win for The Good Wife, but she looks incredible in this black Andrew Gn gown with a gold shoulder and hem print. The voluminous skirt and cinched in waist is dramatic without going full princess.

Elisabeth Moss Golden Globes

So happy Elisabeth Moss won for Top of the Lake and she did so in this stunning oxblood and black beaded J. Mendel dress. While there were mumblings that her hair is too messy for this event, the tousled chic works for me thanks to the shorter length. Bonus points for a bold lip color choice. Moss became my mani cam hero when she did what many have probably wanted to do and flipped it off.

Tatiana Maslany Golden GlobesLooking completely different from the many roles we see her in on Orphan Black, Tatiana Maslany’s award show debut is a style win in this beautifully beaded gown from Jenny Packham that exudes old Hollywood glamour.

Caitlin Fitzgerald Golden Globes

Masters of Sex’s Caitlin Fitzgerald balked at the usual nude/red/black trend with a high necked beautiful baby blue gown from Emilia Wickstead. This is how you emulate the decade your show is set in without looking like you’ve raided the costume department as it has 1950s sensibilities with a modern twist. I’m in love with the coral and baby blue strappy pumps also from Emilia Wickstead.

Lizzy Caplan Golden GlobesSpace played an important thematic role on Masters of Sex and there’s something retro-futuristic about Lizzy Caplan’s Emilio Pucci frock. The silver side column and neckline detail is super sexy as is switching up her usually straight hair for wavy locks.

Lupita Nyong'oLupita Nyong’o was one of the most anticipated red carpet arrivals, especially as what she was wearing leaked early and she didn’t disappoint. I’m a sucker for a cape at the best of times (six seasons and a movie) and this red Ralph Lauren number is spectacular. Shame she didn’t win for her performance in 12 Years a Slave.

Michelle Dockery Golden GlobesYesterday we heralded Michelle Dockery as the best dressed at the pre-Golden Globes celebrations and she didn’t use up all her good style points before the big event. Metallic nudes were a big trend with several Oscar de la Renta gowns reveling in this sparkly style. While I might have added a few accessories there is beauty in simplicity and this is another hit for the Downton Abbey star.

Zosia MametThis white Reem Acra gown with black floral detail is a big departure for Girls’ Zosia Mamet as she tends to favor the LBD (as we saw earlier this week) and the new bob is super cute. All she needs is red lipstick and this would be perfect.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Like Paul Rudd, Julia Louis-Dreyfus has made some kind of deal/has a painting in her attic and she looks incredible in this orange Narciso Rodriguez halter neck dress. She also provided some of the funniest moments from the night, most notably puffing on E cigarette as part of the opening monologue.

Olivia WildeRed carpet gowns and maternity wear don’t tend to cross paths; Olivia Wilde’s sparkly Gucci Première emerald gown is giving me Wizard of Oz feels and it’s wonderfully unexpected.

Who was your best dressed?

“Enough Said” Trailer: James Gandolfini as the Romantic Lead

7 Aug

Nicole Holofcener’s next film Enough Said has taken on a bittersweet role as one of James Gandolfini’s final projects and the first trailer for this romantic comedy has been released. It’s a play on the classic boy meets girl; Gandolfini’s Albert meets Eva (played by the wonderful Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and things take a farcical turn thanks to Eva’s new client Marianne (Nicole Holofcener regular Catherine Keener) who also happens to be Albert’s ex-wife . One aspect that seems to run through the work of Holofcener is exploring characters that have reached a crossroad in their life and both Friends with Money and Please Give feature the kind of storytelling that focuses on broken and new relationships. Holofcener’s strength lies in her approach to character and romance; flaws and foibles can be a both a big turn off and an attraction.

Enough Said debuts at TIFF next month and I’m looking forward to seeing Gandolfini in a project that shows his charm and romantic acting chops. It’s going to be a poignant affair as this is now Gandolfini’s penultimate film (Animal Rescue is set to be released next year) and after his death Nicole Holofcener said about his work on this film that “He didn’t believe he could play a romantic lead, even though everyone on the set thought he was sexy and hilarious. He was charming and self-effacing and incredibly talented. Not only did he pull off playing a leading man, his performance is subtle and moving and very, very lovely.”

Watch the trailer for Enough Said below.
