Out of the Box: Look of the Week

30 Oct

Welcome to another installment of “Out of the Box” and this week includes a fun mix of casual cool, fancy frocks and everything in between.

Jussie Smollet and Taraji P. HensonWhen not showing off their excellent resting bitch face Taraji P. Henson and Jussie Smollett are delivering great panel attire in polka dots and plaid at Entertainment Weekly’s “EW Fest.” Henson also continues the red shoes trend and I am thankful for colorful footwear.

Matt BomerStrong sweater feelings are working overtime courtesy of Matt Bomer’s patterned knit number at the “EW Fest” especially as it is paired with a shirt and tie. Also those horn rimmed glasses. Emma Roberts’ leopard print boots are sneaking into the shot and I actually really like them; the random strapping effect on her tights, not so much.

Judy GreerSuch a delightful look from Judy Greer in Sachin & Babi Noir polka dots and stripes at the InStyle Awards.Michelle WilliamsSimultaneously adding an edge while also staying true to her twee style is Michelle Williams wearing leather Louis Vuitton and I am seriously coveting those boots.

Olivia WildeCombining two of this week’s trends – red shoes and leather – and looking all kinds of cool in floral Valentino is Olivia Wilde at the Lunchbox Fund Benefit Event.

Naomie HarrisAnother patterned delight from Valentino and this one skirts the too sheer territory; Naomie Harris is working this look at the Berlin Spectre premiere and it looks like a map from a time long ago.

Annaleigh AshfordMasters of Sex favorite and Tony Award winner Annaleigh Ashford returns to the stage in a revival of Sylvia. Hitting the opening night red carpet in a fabulous black sequin frock and metallic pumps; Ashford also gets bonus bold lipstick points.

Felicity Covers the Entertainment Weekly Reunion Issue

8 Oct

Are you Team Ben or Team Noel?

The hashtag allegiance signifiers popped up all over Twitter after the unveiling of the new Entertainment Weekly reunion issue featuring the love triangle at the heart of Felicity. I didn’t watch Felicity when it first aired, but this show has been the focus of our TV Rewind series and discussion posts that started two years ago on This Was TV. There was definitely a yelp of happiness when this cover photo first popped up in my feed yesterday.

FelicityGood, right?! The hand placement alone has me all a fluster.

Back when I first started watching Felicity I discussed the notion of love triangles before Twitter and so it was fun to see a hint of what social media would have looked like if it had been around when the show first aired. My timeline is obviously just a small sampling, but it was fairly split down the middle between the Ben and Noel fans. The AV Club’s Carrie Raisler summed it up rather well “Guys don’t let #TeamBen and #TeamNoel tear us apart. We can all be #TeamScotts.”

The trio appeared in a pre-taped video this morning on The Today Show (updated to include the interview) with Keri Russell calling Felicity a “good sweet story” and Entertainment Weekly has released another fun shot and an interview excerpt from the issue.

So many feelings. Also these pajamas are super cute.

ew-felicityNice Dean & DeLuca mug props too.

For more from the reunion issue head here and it will be on newsstands tomorrow (October 9). And for all of your episode by episode Felicity chat needs head to our TV Team-Up section.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

4 Sep

Avoiding all things sheer from the VMAs and still picking some maybe contentious looks from the night showing my bias toward certain patterns and colors. Plus it is time for tennis and cute frocks as we transition from summer and fall. And we’ve also got the TGIT Entertainment Weekly cover.

Taylor SwiftTaylor Swift’s glitzy Ashish ensemble has been pretty divisive and I am firmly in the love it camp; yes it looks like fancy pajamas or exercise attire, but I am all in on the houndstooth pattern and it is something slightly different for Tay. The Christian Louboutin ‘Pumpstagram’ pumps don’t entirely go with the look and yet I am still drooling all over them.

Cara DelevingneStarry Saint Laurent for Cara Delevigne and my favorite sartorial turn from Team Taylor at the VMAs. This is relaxed cool and Cara really looks like she gives none of the fucks. And I suspect she probably doesn’t.

Gigi HadidIn the same way I can’t resist houndstooth this shade of yellow is my weakness and this Emilia Wickstead dress happens to be called ‘Emma:’ yes Gigi Hadid looks like she has come to the VMAs cosplaying the Mad Men episode “The Jet Set” and I am more than fine with this. Still shaking my head at myself as I only just realized that Yolanda from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is Gigi’s mother.

Kat GrahamKat Graham is not one to shy away from a bold red carpet look and vintage Versace is ideal for her. Plus pockets!

Amanda SeyfriedMoving on and I will spending the next two weeks obsessing over the US Open and this kicks off a busy couple of weeks in New York (Fashion Week is coming). The 15th annual USTA opening night gala took place on Monday and Amanda Seyfried’s RED Valentino frock is cute collar perfection.

Anna ChlumskyAnna Chlumsky’s white ribbed dress is tennis watching simple chic and would look even better with a glass of Pimms and lemonade in hand (yes this is the US Open, but traditional Wimbledon drinks are where it is at).Fall TV is right around the corner and Thursday night television is Shondaland on ABC. This is my favorite of the four Entertainment Weekly covers as it showcases Shonda and her leading ladies and with Shonda at the center; the red of her dress matches the cover title and she is the star here.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

3 Apr

It’s my favorite time of month – new magazines! This isn’t a once a month event (see our recent “Out of the Box” magazine cover roundup) but because of the time of year there is a heavier slant towards TV related photo shoots and cover stories. Especially as new Mad Men and Game of Thrones are nearly here. If you can’t tell, we are very excited for both of these things.

Lupita Nyong'o Harper's BazaarFirst up is not a current TV related star, but Lupita Nyong’o on the cover of UK Harper’s Bazaar is too good not to feature as it is such a joyful shot. I can’t wait to get already have a copy.

Ellie Kemper shines in The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and this is the third Bust cover in a row to feature a TV lady we love (the others being Gillian Jacobs and a Broad City affair). It is a cheery image and the coat over the head is perfectly accurate for this time of year because a downpour could happen at any moment. At least it is better than the perpetual winter.

Maisie Williams and Sophie TurnerIt’s no secret how much I adore real life BFFs Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams with the pair talking about their friendship in The New York Times and how their current storylines are both about asserting power/control in the cruel and unforgiving world of Westeros. There is only a year between the pair and despite filming in very different locations they have remained very close with Turner explaining that “No one else gets it like you [Williams] get it.” Turner jokes about how they should be on the cover of Vogue together and if Karlie and Taylor can well then I want to see a Sophie and Maisie version. And I’m digging the slightly 60s styling.

Kiernan Shipka InterviewTalking of teen girl acting sensations; Kiernan Shipka is in Interview this month talking the final season of Mad Men. Shipka talks about growing up on Mad Men, Sally’s coat game being very strong (I concur) and why it is hard to cook vegan donuts. This shot is incredible and throw in The Americans‘ Holly Taylor and Shipka bestie Amandla Stenberg and soon teen girls will start to run things on television drama.

January Jones Marie ClaireThere’s something a little David Bowie about the styling choice for January Jones for Marie Claire even if they don’t quite hit Ziggy Stardust lightning bolt heights.

Rebel WilsonSubscriber covers tend to go for something a little different and I am so in love with UK Elle’s alternate take of their Rebel Wilson cover. The newsstand version is a classic beauty shot (and a slight variation on the Australian issue), but this is just a bit more playful and I like that it is a full body shot. Nice hashtag suggestion too.

Amy SchumerSwitching out rose petals for miniatures is Entertainment Weekly’s Amy Schumer cover and with early glowing reviews for Trianwreck it looks like things are about to get huge for Schumer. Let’s not forget the third season of Inside Amy Schumer, which if it’s anything like the last one then we have a very good thing about to happen (I still can’t get the computer therapy sketch out of my head). Schumer thanked EW “for not airbrushing me. For real very cool. Thank you. Proud size 6 yo!” and it’s depressing a 6 (UK size 10) is considered as a size that might need airbrushing. Are we all meant to be a 4?

Out of the Box: Look of the Week – Magazine Cover Roundup

13 Mar

A bonus “Out of the Box” as there is just too many brilliant new magazine covers to squeeze into our regular column. I have in the past talked about my magazine feelings (they are strong) and new magazine cover week is often a mixture of disappointment and excitement; sometimes bad photoshop takes the shine off, alternatively a cover star might be a someone unexpected and amazing.

Different editorials are aiming for a variety of things with shifting units being high on the list of priorities and the cover has a huge impact on this. Fashion, entertainment and lifestyle magazines all feature in this week’s column and I will be adding all these issues to my already burgeoning print and digital collection.

Mad MenThe first of many Mad Men covers to come celebrating/sobbing over the final hurrah and they are starting with a doozy on The Hollywood Reporter. In the issue they go back to the beginning with an oral history and the only thing this cover shot is lacking is some Kiernan Shipka. They all look fabulous and if you want to find the perfect way to distract yourself just take a look at the Jon Hamm close-up portraits.

Maisie WilliamsApril is going to be a great month for TV and Game of Thrones is high on the most anticipated list. Experiencing the build-up buzz for the first time after finally catching up last year is going to be fun; case in point the unveiling of Arya Stark’s new look with a hint of “Tragic Kingdom” era Gwen Stefani on the cover of Entertainment Weekly got me all a fluster. New costumes to pore over ahoy.

IMG_1406Because all things Broad City, including this New York cover lead to joy (except the realization the season finale is next week).

Marie Claire Kerry WashingtonKerry Washington is mesmerizing on Marie Claire’s April edition and after last month’s InStyle debacle it is an image that thankfully looks like the Scandal star. It is a captivating pose and while they’ve gone for an Olivia Pope clothing color palette, there is plenty of Washington shining through with very un-Olivia like tussled hair. Soon to be Scandal guest star Lena Dunham has written the piece aptly entitled “Why We All Want to be Kerry Washington.”

Robin WrightAnother stare into your soul cover from another amazing lady; Robin Wright is exuding all kinds of cool on Vanity Fair and she is the main reason House of Cards is calling out to me. Short hair perfection and the story behind this amazing cut is that it was a necessity ““I was just cutting off damaged hair—too much bleach over months of [appearing in] different movies. It was a mercy killing, but it works for the character.” Iconic haircuts often are the result of an accident (see the Rachel) and this is one of those.

Head here for a PaleyFest themed “Out of the Box.”

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

29 Aug

The Emmys are over and the red carpet has been awash with fabulous attire (the ‘best of’ rundown is here, here and here) so this edition of “Out of the Box” is a mixture of iconic shots of the week, magazine covers and a new fashion campaign featuring a Game of Thrones star.

Beyonce FeministWhile TV Ate My Wardrobe has been Emmy focused this week, another awards show took place with the VMAs and Beyoncé performed an incredible 12-song medley over 16 minutes. One of the defining images came during “Flawless” as Beyoncé stood defiant in front of a huge “FEMINIST” sign (for an excellent article on Beyoncé and this moment head here). It’s been a banner week for women in pop and feminism with Taylor Swift also reconciling her past dismissive thoughts on feminism with an acknowledgement that she is a feminist.

MichonneEntertainment Weekly released four in motion Walking Dead covers; this one featuring Michonne is incredible and by far the most striking.

Nylon Aubrey PlazaIt looks like Nylon magazine is ditching its TV issue special format for their September issue; however one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s TV favorites is covering the ‘Rebel Fashion’ themed edition with Aubrey Plaza in leather and (faux?) fur. You can watch a video of Aubrey here talking about the location of the photo shoot, designers she is into and the final season of Parks and Recreation.

Karen Millen Sophie TurnerKit Harington isn’t the only Game of Thrones star booking fall campaigns as Sophie Turner is looking a far cry from the heavy gown wearing and now feathered shouldered Sansa Stark as part of the new Karen Millen showcase. In the accompanying video (which you can see below) Turner is wearing this floral jacket (you can get an oversized version at the moment) as she travels across London to the shoot while the strains of Elastica’s “Connection” (this song sums up my Britpop years) plays over the top. It’s a cool nod to the decade that is influencing fashion at the moment and London is a prominent feature now as it was then.
