Best of the 2014 Emmy Red Carpet: Bold Color

26 Aug

The 2014 Emmy Red Carpet coverage continues and now we’ve addressed the stunning black and white frocks from the evening it is time to revel in all the vibrant colors that were on display.

Teyonah ParrisI wanted to use a photo of this dress in posed motion as Mad Men’s Teyonah Parris takes what could be an awkward dress by Christian Siriano and has fun with it. The chartreuse skirt and candy colored bodice make this a standout look and one Parris wears well.

Claire Danes and Hugh DancyLet’s take a look at the red gowns of the night of which there were many. Claire Danes is wearing my favorite with an embellished Givenchy frock including lace cut outs, belting and foliage looking collar. All of these factors combined could be a bit much, however Danes looks elegant. Good lipstick choice too. Bonus Hugh Dancy with added conflicted ‘lack of facial hair’ feelings.

January Jones EmmysYou can always count on January Jones to wear something dramatic and she does just this in this patterned and pocketed Prabal Gurung delight. A terrific shade of lip color for this dress, but what was up with her hair?

JLDMoving from bad hair to amazing with Julia Louis-Dreyfus (another attic painting candidate) in a raspberry colored Carolina Herrera and like Claire Danes she has a thin belt to accentuate her silhouette. The buckles don’t stop here as the straps also use this detail and JLD shone on the night for smooches, speeches and her gown.

Keke PalmerAnother dramatic and stunning Rubin Singer frock with Keke Palmer showing how to wear a whole lot of dress with simple accessories and makeup/hair. This cobalt blue is striking and Palmer is a standout.

Allison Tolman EmmysAlso making an impression in an arresting color is Allison Tolman in an emerald Romona Keveza one-shouldered frock. Such a good choice for the first time Emmy nominee.

Natalie DormerNatalie Dormer strikes an almost Wonder Woman like J. Mendel orange topped delight – if it looks familiar it’s because Michelle Monaghan wore something from the same collection on Saturday – and Dormer’s hair deserves a special mention for distracting me from some of the terrible styles on display.

Kerry Washington EmmysAnother orange frock and Kerry Washington’s Prada getup is one that I keep changing my mind on, so I’m including it while I sit on the fence. I like it in motion and the sparkly mini skirt element is really appealing; I’m just not sure if it is trying to do too much and failing to tie it all together.

Anna GunnAnother of the dramatic leg slit trend and Anna Gunn’s Jenny Packham frock is a color block and patterned beauty. Digging her Edie Parker ‘Lara’ clutch and gold sandals too as she celebrates the last Breaking Bad Emmy outing.

Michelle Dockery EmmysMichelle Dockery is always a red carpet favorite and as with her Roland Mouret outfit at the weekend this Rosie Assoulin is working a fancy table cloth look. I realize this doesn’t sound like a positive, but I really love this frock and the colors on Dockery.

Allison JanneyVelvet in August is a bold choice from Allison Janney and even though it bears a resemblance to a Quality Street, Janney is working it like a double winner in one year should.

Best of the 2014 Emmy Red Carpet: Black and White Gowns

26 Aug

Welcome to the 2014 Emmy red carpet ‘Best of’ coverage and in a year when bold color was on trend, black and white gowns still made their mark.

Lizzy Caplan Emmys V2Lizzy Caplan in Donna Karan Atelier is the TV Ate My Wardrobe look of the night and this gown is stunning. When Caplan arrived the brief shots on E! were enough to know she was shutting the red carpet down. Then this photo of the back began to circulate on Twitter and it became clear this gown is the stuff that dreams are made of; it didn’t disappoint from any other angle either.

Laverne Cox EmmysIn a custom Marc Bouwer Laverne Cox is the height of elegance and she has a train, which I adore. Perfection on this night from the Orange is the New Black star.

Lean HeadeyLena Headey always comes across super cool and on Emmy night it is no different with Headey in a black Rubin Singer asymmetric ensemble. It’s always a jolt seeing the Game of Thrones cast with their regular hair – Kit Harington changed his up with a man bun – and Headey’s short do is as far removed from Cersei as you can get and I love it.

Anna Chlumsky EmmyAnother white gown winner (although sadly none of the ladies featured here took home their respective prizes) from Anna Chlumsky in Zac Posen. The gold clutch is the ideal glitzy addition to this outfit.

Jessica PareGoing for a slightly different length is Jessica Paré in an exquisitely beaded Lanvin dress. Tulip skirts are hard to pull off as they’re an awkward silhouette; Paré manages to do this with aplomb.

Angela BassettAngela Bassett demonstrating once again that she must have a painting in the attic in a beautiful wrap gown with just the right amount of gold accessories; the belt and cuff detailing ties the whole look together.

Carrie BrownsteinWhile not as fun as Carrie Brownstein’s Emmy dress from last weekend, I salute this Halston Heritage dress that’s giving off fancy sci-fi uniform vibes.

Michelle Monaghan EmmysCombining two of the night’s trends as dramatic leg slits were also prominent is Michelle Monaghan in white Giambattista Valli Couture. Also stunning.

Best of the Variety and BAFTA Pre-Emmy Red Carpets

24 Aug

August has been a relatively quiet month with most of the red carpet action coming from film projects filmed while on hiatus. Get ready for an influx of dresses as the Emmys are on Monday and the parties have already begun. Below are the best looks from the BAFTA Los Angeles TV Tea 2014 and Variety and Women in Film Emmy Nomination Celebration. With several pulling double duty at both events a couple of faces pop up twice. On trend is a mixture of all-black ensembles and super colorful affairs (with some showcasing both thanks to the two events). There are a lot of bad shoe choices and somehow three jumpsuits make the list (insert Home Alone cat face here).

Kerry WashingtonKerry Washington has been hitting style highs recently and this is another to add to that list. Going short in Michael Kors and fresh faced before the fancy frock night is understandable. This is striking in its simplicity and there’s a slight hint of sparkle when the flash hits the embellishments.

Samira WileyAnother short take and the pre-Emmy parties are all about having fun before the big event and Orange is the New Black’s Samira Wiley is doing just this in a blurred effect number.

Julianna MarguliesJulianna Margulies is always one of my most anticipated on the red carpet come award season and while she is playing it pretty safe; it is also a classic J-Marg look. Digging the bold lipstick too.

Michelle Dockery VarietyMichelle Dockery’s peplum Elie Saab black jumpsuit is also in the simple chic category at the Variety party.

Michelle DockeryHowever, earlier in the day Dockery has done the color splurge in a Roland Mouret crop top and skirt. The Teen Choice Awards don’t have the monopoly on crop tops (there is another coming up) and even though the skirt looks like a fancy table cloth Dockery pulls this off. Despite the matchy matchy shoe/skirt of it all these Christian Louboutin pumps are a footwear highlight.

KS and ASIf Kiernan Shipka’s Instagram is anything to go by these teen stars are set to takeover the world while having brunch and here she is once again with Sleepy Hollow’s Amandla Stenberg. Both manage to look super cute and slightly edgy at the same time in their dark attire.

KsKiernan Shipka also attended the BAFTA Tea in a summery Giambattista Valli cocktail dress and she will be one to look out for tomorrow as she continues to hit all the right sartorial notes.

Joanne FroggattDownton Abbey’s Joanne Froggat does color blocking in Altuzarra mixing bold red and orange with grey. Black sandals are a popular choice on both red carpets (not in the bad shoe category) and it is still summer after all.

Ashley MadekweAt first I thought this was a dress, instead it is a Christian Dior jumpsuit with one leg much wider than the other and Ashley Madekwe pulls off Dior’s latest attempt to wrinkle our brains (remember JLaw’s half skirt/pants number?!). One reason this works is because it’s all one color and a striking shade of blue at that. Plus the pockets, always the pockets.

Anna ChlumskyKeeping in the jumpsuit/pocket territory and Anna Chlumsky’s Veronica Beard outfit reminds me of the Hannibal bathroom location from season one (they’re not even that similar, but that’s where my brain jumped to). This is not a bad thing as those tiles are gorgeous as is this pattern.

Lizzy Caplan BAFTAAnother BAFTA/Variety double! Lizzy Caplan is wearing a bold chartreuse Cushnie et Ochs frock and works this difficult shade by pairing it with scarlet pumps. Sheer tends to cause a wrinkled nose effect and part of me would love to see this as a strapless gown.

Lizzy Caplan VarietySwitching things up and the Wes Gordon houndstooth pencil skirt and long sleeve crop top makes me think of a Virginia Johnson outfit shifted from 1956 to 2014. Paired with burgundy Christian Louboutin ‘Bootypump’ ankle boots – which I am now coveting – makes this a sophisticated and fun take on office to party chic.

Allison TolmanEmmy weekend also reminds me which shows I need to catch up on and Fargo is top of this list. I’ve heard so much about Allison Tolman’s performance and she looks lovely on the BAFTA Tea red carpet in a lace blue frock. A more colorful shoe choice (basically anything but beige) would have been preferable.

Rachelle LefevreMore beige shoe sadness with Rachelle Lefevre, however her dress is enough to distract and looks like the clothing version of sediment layers. This also doesn’t sound that great I realize, but trust me it is. So much hair envy.

Michelle MonaghanColor blocking with a dotty twist and Michelle Monaghan’s red and orange J. Mendel frock is another striking take on this trend.

Best of the Entertainment Weekly Comic-Con Celebration Red Carpet

28 Jul

Comic-Con might be over and yet the style posts continue (and probably will for much of this week) with the best looks from the Entertainment Weekly party on Saturday.

Rose LeslieRose Leslie does simple chic attire with a hint of sparkle and after her other black sartorial choice I think we might have found a new TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite.

John Noble and Tom MisonThat noise you just heard was probably my heart going aflutter at the sight of Tom Mison wearing glasses and his beardy goodness. John Noble is looking rather dashing too in as part of this slightly different from Fringe father/son combo.

Nicole Beharie and Orlando JonesMore Sleepy Hollow goodness and posing like prom; not too keen on the sheer section of Nicole Beharie’s skirt, but this is a fun summer outfit. Totally digging Orlando Jones’ plum pants and glasses look.

DAWDeborah Ann Woll has lightened her locks (maybe for Daredevil or just to mark the end of True Blood) and she looks just as striking as ever in a strapless red frock with a bold lip color to complement the new ‘do.

Ashley MadekweAshley Madekwe brings the metallic goodness to this party in a Christian Dior strapless frock and the patch detail gives the impression of a fun uniform like embellishment.

Angela BassettNow this is a summer frock and Angela Bassett stands out in a Theia hot pink dress with a rainbow bodice.

Felicia DayRobots! Felicia Day’s top is delightfully on the nose for this weekend. Fantastic nail color too.

Get the Look: Keri Russell’s Smoky Purple Eyes

10 Jul

One of the first posts I wrote on TV Ate My Wardrobe bemoaned the lack of a central database like IMDb for makeup (and especially lipstick) used on the red carpet and in shows/movies. A site like this is still a pipe dream, but luckily there are some in this profession who reveal which products they use on Twitter and one such artist is Tina Turnbow. Turnbow is Keri Russell’s regular makeup artist and she introduced me to the colorful Sephora eye pencils (which I stocked up on recently) and as I tend to stick to a very minimal routine, I am always glad to inject something new and colorful into this pretty safe palette.

Keri Russell eyesStep up Keri Russell at the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes premiere in New York this week as she sizzles in the hot summer weather in a super funky all black ensemble. Balancing smoky eyes with a light pink lip color adds to this look and to give Russell’s eyes an extra kick Turnbow uses an Urban Decay 24/7 glide-on eye pencil in VICE.

Vice Urban Decay

These pencils are available in a range of colors and cost $20. For a look at the complete range head here.

Keri Russell DOTPOTAAnd here’s the full look and Russell exudes super cool in a sheer lace top, jeans (not so sure about the extra material flap) and black mules. Russell’s red carpet style tends to stick to effortless chic and this continues this trend.

Diane Kruger is a Patchwork Delight at The Bridge Season 2 Premiere

8 Jul

If you ever wondered what to do with all those patches bought from vacation destinations long ago then look no further than this stunning Mary Katrantzou ‘Dixiecult’ dress Diane Kruger wore to the season 2 premiere of The Bridge last night. From the fall 2014 collection this shows a huge departure from the mesmerizing digital print designs Mary Katrantzou is renowned for and Kruger’s sartorial prowess makes her the ideal candidate to show it off.

Diane KrugerThis is one of those dresses that gets even more interesting the more you look at it and pairing it with simple Stuart Weitzman navy strappy sandals and a yellow pouch Charlotte Olympia ‘Pandora’ clutch works like a charm. Here is a closer look at both:

Diane Kruger clutchBack in February when the collection first hit the runway Katrantzou explained that “Everything’s made up of badges and symbols taken from road signs, scouts, cookie cutters, and militaria. But in the end, when we put it together it does look a bit pagan and weird. Something regal, but quite pop, too.”

Diane Kruger hairHere’s another look at some of those patches including more road signs and the intricate double braid hairstyle that is so deceptively simple from the front.

diane kruger and Demian BichirAnd here is Kruger looking super adorable with co-star Demián Bichir and it is this partnership I am looking forward to seeing again when The Bridge returns tomorrow (July 9) on FX.

Best of the 2014 Tony Awards Red Carpet

9 Jun

The Tony Awards were held last night and as I just saw my first musical this weekend (no really) this award show couldn’t come at a better time (I saw Cabaret and it was amazing, even if it didn’t win anything). As I’ve just got back from vacation this is a lot less in-depth than usual, but there is still plenty to discuss as the red carpet is awash with amazing gowns (and tuxedos).

photo1 (2)Leighton Meester looks stunning in ivory Antonio Berardi and this almost makes up for the lack of Seth Cohen/Blair Waldorf wedding photos as she is accompanied by husband Adam Brody.

photo6Now for something vibrant from Sutton Foster in a fuschia Reem Acra.

photo7Audra McDonald won last night (and it’s a record sixth win) for her performance in Lady Day and she also had an impact on the red carpet in a sea of black and white gowns. This look is maybe missing a necklace, but I really love the relaxed strapless Escada frock.

photo8Speaking of black and white dresses with Lucy Liu looking fabulous in Vivienne Westwood.

photo2Feathers can be hard to pull off and it helps that Maggie Gyllenhaal has the whole boho look down (no pun intended) and this Dolce & Gabbana is perfect for her.

Judith LightI adore Judith Light and the long sleeve Randi Rahm gown she wore looks fabulous on her.

photo5Another fantastic black dress with Vera Farmiga in Stella McCartney. This time matching her hair waves to her dress ones.

photo10This is a fun/sexy take on pattern with Anika Noni Rose wearing a leopard print Badgley Mischka.

photo9This is from backstage and Tina Fey is killing it in a midnight blue with gold print Oscar de la Renta gown.

photo4The perfect way to end this post is with Matt Bomer looking pretty damn perfect. Swoon.

Best of the 2014 UK Glamour Magazine Women of the Year Awards

4 Jun

Right on the heels of the CFDA Fashion Awards are the UK Glamour magazine Women of the Year Awards celebrating those who are making an impact in film, television, fashion and music. Color, print and metallics dominate our style highlights.

Emily VanCampEmily VanCamp picked up International TV Actress and this Monique Lhuillier fuchsia tweed print mid-length dress could almost double as fancy business wear if it wasn’t for those fantastic bell-sleeves. This is sophisticated, yet playful and the slightly longer length sets it apart from a lot of the shorter hemlines on display.

Natalie DormerGoing even longer is Natalie Dormer in this starry ’70s inspired Matthew Williamson halter gown and it’s the perfect partner to Brie Larson’s DVF from the CFDA Awards. This maybe needs a bolder lip color, but the Game of Thrones star shines on this red carpet.

Sophie TurnerAs does Dormer’s co-star Sophie Turner and she has gone for a slightly more edgy look in McQ Alexander McQueen. Mixing plaid with leather is a fun choice, particularly when the leather aspect goes beyond a belt into a built-in corset. Pairing this with maroon booties might seem like a misstep considering it is summer, but I’m totally into them.

Emma WillisEmma Willis picked up Presenter of the year and as yellow is my clothing catnip I am practically drooling over this canary Roksanda Ilincic skirt (that is very similar to this one). The color blocking is on point and Willis adds even more pop with her pink lipstick without becoming a walking crayon set.

Cat DeeleyPresenter Cat Deeley’s Matthew Williamson star print shift dress shows off her amazing legs and the red belt detail with her silver snakeskin strappy heels complement the simplicity of this style. Deeley looks fantastic.

Daisy LoweDaisy Lowe opts for a retro silhouette in a 1954 Dior couture (from William Vintage) and the nipped in waist, full skirt and open neckline is a classic shape for a reason; Lowe pulls this off without looking like she is playing 1950s dress up.

Gemma ChanActress Gemma Chan does the metallic shift/strappy shoe look with aplomb.

Sarah HylandModern Family’s Sarah Hyland wears a super shimmer Gucci T-shirt style frock and while the oversized nature does almost drown her, it’s a funky take on what could look like either mermaid scales or chainmail. Take your pick with what fantasy crossover you want, just be sure to ditch the nude pumps on the way out.

Hayley AtwellHayley Atwell dons one of the few floor-length gowns at this event in Ermanno Scervino and the floral embroidery, braid and pink lip gives this a 70s boho feel.

Best of the 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards Red Carpet

3 Jun

The annual CFDA Fashion Awards were held at the Lincoln Center in New York yesterday (June 2) celebrating those who have made an outstanding contribution to American fashion. Actors, models and singers attended the event dressed in creations designed by the winners and nominees and here is a look at our favorites from this event.

Greta Gerwig and Zac PosenGreta Gerwig poses with designer Zac Posen in a stunning long sleeve tangerine dress by Zac Posen and while her How I Met Your Dad project is no more (and really Gerwig was the main reason I would have watched this show) I am very excited to see what is next for her. I hope this bad TV experience won’t put Gerwig off future television projects, though I expect network TV has been soured for now.

SolangeSolange looks super sexy in shimmery silver Calvin Klein Collection, which is giving off Old Hollywood vibes with a dash of ’70s disco. I am super into bright pink lip color at the moment and this pop of color gives this look a contemporary feel.

Coco RochaBringing the drama is Coco Rocha in a Christian Siriano gown (and posing with the designer and I’m momentarily mesmerized by his shoes). This is a stunning and elegant design and the embroidered monochrome skirt is enhanced by the off the shoulder sleeved black bodice. Add a cigarette holder and this has Audrey Hepburn flashes.

Liya KebedeWearing a white Wes Gordon shirt and a skirt that makes me think of chemistry class (I might be the only who sees this print and pictures atoms and molecules) in the best possible way is model Liya Kebede. This is one of those looks that is super stylish and effortless; it’s happens to be on the least showy end and yet it is also one of the standouts.

Busy PhilipsBusy Philipps looks stunning and statuesque in a red Honor halter dress complete with a custom Irene Neuwirth necklace – Neuwirth won for accessory design – and matching ring. The ruffled neck sets this dress apart from other red gowns like this that tend to go for a bow option (see Nicole Kidman and Emma Stone).

Brie Larson DVFI have loved this gold star print Diane von Furstenberg dress since I first saw it on the runway back in February (it sadly didn’t fit in with this Alana Bloom fantasy costuming piece) and I’m so glad to see how good Brie Larson looks in this frock.

Keri RussellWhile this might look a tad like a mint-green sheet has found its way onto this Rosie Assoulin gown, I really like this ethereal Grecian touch and it goes beyond just another plain monochrome getup. Keri Russell tends to stick with simple designs and this is still in her usual wheelhouse with an added embellishment and she’s pulling this look off.

Best of ABC and NBC’s 2014 Upfronts Red Carpet

14 May

More Upfront red carpet fashion and it’s a joint NBC/ABC post. From what I can gather from the previews there’s a whole lot of unappealing “I’m good at my job, but suck at my personal life” female centered narratives, sitcoms that might work better as rom-coms and SO many murder shows. This is of course a simplistic overview and I’m sure there’s more to these shows than this – a snap judgement can be wrong as Sleepy Hollow has proved – but at the moment comedies are holding my interest way more than most of the new dramas.

Karen GillanKaren Gillan is the lead in Selfie and while I’m eh on the title and Gillan not using her real accent, she is incredibly charming so I will at least watch the pilot (ditto John Cho). I’m sensing a Clueless vibe from the preview, which is probably a far too kind comparison at this point. Gillan’s still rocking the pixie cut (her character is not) and those appear to be hashtags on her Thom Browne dress, which makes sense considering the name and focus of her new show. Hashtags alone would be too on the nose, but combined with the textured looking wings shifts the focus. Gillan tends to wear slightly more unusual dresses on the red carpet and I cannot wait for the Guardians of the Galaxy promo trail.

Aja KingGoing for a more a more simple approach is How to Get Away with Murder’s Aja King and other than the clunky looking shoes (strappy would be much better) this is a fun look for this kind of event; the accessories make up for the footwear. How to Get Away with Murder is the latest from Shonda Rhimes with Viola Davis in the lead role and it looks twisty, soapy and like the kind of show I will be watching with an Olivia Pope size glass of wine.

Juliette Lewis UpfrontJuliette Lewis is pulling double duty as she’s in Fox’s 10-part Twin Peeks esque Wayward Pines and Secrets and Lies for ABC. They are set to debut midseason and her presence in both makes them instantly more appealing. Finally some shoes that aren’t too clunky or too nude and power clash fine with the print on her ALICE by Temperley dress What you can’t see in this shot is the cut out back section of this vibrant floral frock and even though it reminds me of a bedspread from my grandpa’s house, Lewis is totally working it.

Tina Fey and Ellie KemperThere’s no preview yet for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and it’s on my ‘please don’t be terrible’ list for all the Tina Fey-producing, Ellie Kemper starring reasons. Both dresses – Fey in Veronica Beard and Kemper in Parker – are signs of Upfronts veterans as they are both the right blend of fancy/casual.

Cristin MiliotiCristin Milioti is starring in A to Z which while I’m not sure how long the premise can sustain, I will be watching because of her and Ginsberg. This look is pure 90s and something Liv Tyler would have worn; this is not a bad thing and we all know how much I adore this fashion period. It’s floral and pretty much all of these dresses are making me glad the sun is shining right now (even if my current attire is less than fun, flirty dress and more clashing baggy threads). Pink lip color and bangs are detracting my attention from the blah nude footwear, also known as ‘why do people keep choosing these shoes?’
