A day earlier than normal, but lots of summer looks from daytime events and premieres as “Out of the Box” delivers bold color, pattern and pleats.
Enjoy! At the Glamour and Facebook luncheon to discuss Election 2016;Danielle Brooks and Uzo Aduba gave a lesson in how to dress for a day shindig in black and white pleats and not too sickly sweet pink. The Orange is the New Black cast also returned to set in the last week to start shooting season 5.Continuing in the fantastic day dress with pleats department is Zoe Kazan in this super cute patterned number and I am coveting those shoes hard.Keeping things casual and cool also at this Glamour luncheon is another TV Ate My Wardrobe fave and Jessica Williams’ patterned frock, denim jacket and white sneakers gives daytime outfit goals. This look also nicely doubles up for 2 Dope Queens performing attire. The Ghostbusters cast bring so much color and patterned joy to the LA premiere and this is how you co-ordinate without going matchy matchy. Also at the Ghostbusters premiere – and I am so looking forward to this movie – is Lizzy Caplan in floaty Erdem; an ideal summer look with contrasting Charlotte Olympia bag. There’s something a little witchy about Diane Kruger’s Jason Wu gown and this manages to have an element of sheer that doesn’t make me automatically recoil. A victory for this style, I think.
A relatively quiet week on the red carpet front what with the holiday weekend (for candids check out “Behind the Insta-Scenes“), but we’ve still got plenty of sartorial treats from sportswear at Wimbledon, what to wear while watching tennis, patterns and another Interview Magazine editorial to salivate over. Nike produced a boho floaty dress, which would be great for the beach or Coachella. Less great for playing tennis in. Good job, guys. Serena Williams escaped this calamity and opted instead for a look that is both stylish and practical with a very sporty top and a pleated skirt; mixing contemporary with traditional. If only the pleated skirts we wore for games at high school looked this good.Giving great style both in victory and in motion with this ballerina like shot. Serena Williams is incredible on every level. This is from week 1 of Wimbledon, but I somehow missed Kim Sears wearing a fantastic floral Kate Spade dress that featured in NYFW Fantasy Costuming last year. A departure from the first time Kim Sears graced these pages wearing the best sweater responding to a swearing ‘controversy’ at the Australian Open.Sophie Turner goes for simple chic on Day 10 of Wimbledon in a white shirt and pencil skirt. Keeping on the Game of Thrones track with Maisie Williams at the Serpentine Summer Party killing it in a variety of green patterned pieces fit for Emerald City; a floral Milly frock and matching Louboutin shoes and clutch. I’m not crazy about the choker because of my general choker feelings, but it works with this look and Williams’ general 90s loving vibe.Janelle Monáe does a very different and incredible looking ladysuit in Giuseppe Zanotti at the Queen Sugar screening in New Orleans. It can be hard to make hats work, but every single thing about the styling from H to T (oh hey Tyra) is cool as fuck. Interview Magazine has been very goodto usrecently and we’re going to end this week with some much needed Idris Elba. The photos include a variety of styling from suits to shirts to vests with the above being my favorite from the set. In the interview with Jon Favreau, Elba discusses a number of things include his desire to direct, recent projects and his TV background:
“Television is where I cut my teeth. One of my first jobs was in a soap opera, five days a week. And what I found is, although there are different directors coming in and different crews, you just lived in your character. It’s the nature of the story, the ongoing story, and it can get deeper and deeper.”
So many sequins and bold color on Out of the Box this week with looks from the BET Awards, movie premieres and other red carpet shindigs bringing all the summer dress delights. Yara Shahidi super fun and super colorful Tracy Reese dress for the 2016 BET Awards is playing into two of my great loves; stripes and sparkles. The teenage Black-ish star has picked out a look that is both age appropriate and stands out. Gold vintage Tommy Hilfiger stacked heels are the perfect shoe as they shimmer without clashing. For more on Shahidi’s getting ready process head to Teen Vogue.More bold sequins at the BET Awards with singer Andra Day delivering on vintage looking glam and this entire ensemble is stunning right down to purple Moschino pumps. A Prada sequin mini for Aubrey Plaza and this is ultimate Megan Draper has just hit California attire. So I am of course so here for it.I would like to see a live action movie with Jenny Slate, Ellie Kemper and Lake Bell and not just The Secret Life of Pets, which is what they are promoting here. Dress pretty for all three ladies and this was also the occasion where Jenny Slate made things red carpet official with Chris Evans.Glorious green caftan at the ready for Lauren Ambrose at the Amazon pilots event. I like this super boho look a lot more than the Interestings pilot (I loved the book, but think the show misses a lot of what made this group charming). I really like Ambrose and have high hopes that if it does go to series they will fix these issues. At the Tarzan premiere Cush Jumbo is also doing the casual glam thing in Michael Kors and this really makes me want to grab a cocktail with her.
“Out of the Box” is a smorgasbord of outfit YES moments including prints, super cute collars and red lipstick. Plus the platonic ideal of a casual outfit, sunglasses and discussing a new TV character style icon.I am a big Parker Posey and Coach fan – this leather T-Rex adorned varsity jacket is amazing – so the combination of both at the 2016 Coach And Friends Of The High Line Summer Party is pretty much the best. Part of the Posey charm is that she can pattern clash the shit out of anything and still look this fantastic.Coach are embracing prints that would make perfect 1970s carpet/wallpaper/any upholstery and in non-shocking news I am so here for it. Jessica Joffe’s dress hits all the right notes and I’m currently coveting a whole lot from Coach’s RTW collection.Ladysuit, red lips, fantastic collar and silver shoes; Evan Rachel Wood at the Into the Forest premiere wears all of my favorite things.Ideal casual outfit alert from Aubrey Plaza on her way in to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and I will never not love a great sweater paired with jeans and white (Commes des Garcon – you can’t see the heart face in this shot sadly) Cons. And as the Fug Girls say; everyone looks hotter in sunglasses. At the BFG premiere Kristen Schaal did pleats and block color in the best possible way. Schaal’s a big fan of flats and for that I salute her especially when pink Oxfords are her shoe of choice.Interview Magazine keeps dishing upexcellent editorials and Ruth Negga’s is another to add to the stunning list. Despite it being June I’m having a whole lot of strong coat feelings this week and this Miu Miu one delivers on every level. Negga’s Tulip is the best thing about Preacher and a new TV style icon to adore; she discusses the audition process and that she has worked with Dominic Cooper on a number of occasions prior to this. Plus what she thinks about the tone of Preacher:
“I really like that kind of oddness. Everything seems straightforward in Preacher but nothing is; everything is kind of askew. You’re dealing with this hyper unrealness—that’s what comics are—and I like that sort of twist.”
Negga also chats about Cannes and the film Loving which is already getting some very early awards buzz.
The Tony Awardsred carpet was awash with color and pattern so it was interesting to see that the rest of this week was so dominated by neutrals and metallics with a dash of florals.
We’ve got the New York Orange is the New Black premiere and a couple of other events featuring some TV Ate My Wardrobe faves.Happy OITNB Day!
Samira Wiley in a classic plunging black jumpsuit – cue reminder that I still need to embrace this trend – and bold berry lip color. I love seeing group shots of this cast because what other show has this much diversity and array of body shapes, looks and style choices with this many women? I think the answer is probably none. And this is just a small portion of the sizable OITNB cast.
Outfit standouts here include Laverne Cox and Uzo Aduba with Taylor Schilling and Natasha Lyonne – does this mean Nicky is back? – getting the lipstick points. Going for a look that would fit right in at Studio 54 and Vicky Jeudy crushes it in gold metallic Halston. Keeping on the metal theme with Taraji P. Henson in Marc Jacobs serving up a whole lot of steel with a dash of floral embellishment at the Women In Film 2016 Crystal + Lucy Awards; Henson was honored with the Lucy Award for Excellence in Television for her performance as Cookie Lyon on Empire. Keeping on this muted shimmery trend at the Women In Film 2016 Crystal + Lucy Awards is Claire Danes in Dolce & Gabbana with her second red carpet appearance on TV Ate My Wardrobe this week. Pink lipstick yes! Kerry Washington is a patterned dress wearing queen and after last week’s dreamy D&G number here is another delight; this time it is Giambattista Valli and I am particularly here for those floaty sleeves. More pink lipstick to add some color into this week’s muted tones theme. Ending this week’s “Out of the Box” with a boost of color and pants with Rose McIver at the 2016 Women in Film Max Mara Face of the Future event celebrating Natalie Dormer (who was honored at the Women In Film 2016 Crystal + Lucy Awards – also sponsored by Max Mara).
McIver’s look is giving me so many late 90s flashbacks, but not of the choker *shudder* kind and this looks like something I would have worn back then and even now. Also giving me Keri Russell in Felicity vibes. Love the fresh faced/hair back approach here and I cannot wait for iZombie to return after my recent binge.
After a brief period of minimal red carpet events it is suddenly all happening again including the CFDA Awards and plenty of Emmy related events with roundtables, screenings and general awards chat. Plus, magazine covers!
Some shows in contention are also promoting their upcoming seasons – that really is some A+ plus timing – and there are lots of super summery looks for you to enjoy this week including a whole array of patterned frocks, sunglasses and light suits. Everything about this cover is pure delight and Kerry Washington’s Dolce & Gabbana frock is giving off so many European summer vacation vibes; so much so that I’m writing this in the morning and yet I’m hankering for a patio, the biggest selection of bread and cheeses and an Olivia Pope size glass of wine.
Aziz Ansari as ever looks great in a suit and you can watch their whole Actors on Actors chat here.Ladysuit Alert! The cast of the new Ghostbusters get their own covers for the Elle ‘Women in Comedy’ issue and they are all pure joy with Kate McKinnon just edging out in the front as my favorite.
My one caveat (and it is something Elle has previously been guilty of) is the Melissa McCarthy choice as her full body shot is so great and I don’t know why they opted for the close up (well I do know why *sighs*). As Samantha Powell points out the black dress photo looks like it was part of the cover set.Lauren Lapkus crushing it in Alice + Olivia at the Elle ‘Women in Comedy’ celebration and if I had any more weddings to go to this summer (other than my own) then this would be ideal guest attire. Following the Fug Girls mantra that ‘everybody looks hotter in sunglasses’ and also in a week where I took a deep dive into this accessory choice in my TV and Style column over at The Observer; this group shot at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic is most welcome.
This event always brings out excellent summer style and from Elizabeth Olsen’s shorts take on a ladysuit to Michael B. Jordan’s no tie polka dot look they are oozing sunshine cool. TV Ate My Wardrobe couple fave Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale also deliver on the polo watching front in summer frocks and a pink shirt seems like a ubiquitous choice for an occasion like this.Mr Robot isn’t back until next month (Wednesday, July 13) so I think we can expect to see a lot more of this cast in the coming weeks and this is only a good thing.
Rami Malek and Christian Slater have shown on numerous occasions that they can mix their red carpet style up from casual to fancy pants with Rami throwing his hat into the floral trend at the Television Academy 70th Anniversary celebration. We’ve seen a version of Portia Doubleday’s Philosophy dress on Sarah Paulson a couple of months ago and I much prefer this plunging neckline take and Carly Chaikin’s giving lots of chill vibes in RVNNYC.Any regular readers will know how happy I am to have UnREAL back and this has been a super fun press tour (although the premiere viewing numbers are less than encouraging).
The premiere took a deep dive back into the dark and twisted world of reality TV and I can’t see Rachel wearing anything as cute as Shiri Appleby’s Kayat floral mini with super poofy sleeves any time soon. Hot pink Stuart Weitzman sandals really set the whole look off.Welcome back to TV Scott Speedman and to the promo train with Animal Kingdom (premieres Tuesday, June 14 on TNT). Okay so this suit is a little on the crinkled front, but I’m willing to forgive that for Ben Covington related reasons and it is very much keeping with the summer vibe.
Also here is Speedman on The Late Show being totally charming.
A relatively quiet week on the style front what with the holiday weekend reducing the number of events, but never fear as we’ve still got plenty of sartorial treats on offer from the Resort 2017 fashion shows and Hollywood Reporter award season showcase. The Hollywood Reporter continues my favorite series of the year with their pre-Emmy nominations roundtables including the monster Supporting Actor class photo, which this year features actors from TV Ate My Wardrobe faves such as You’re the Worst, The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, The Leftovers, Togetherness and Girls.
The 30-strong actor photo can be seen here and it was this individual shot of Kether Donohue that gives me full heart eyes; the caped Bariano jacket, Stella & Jamie top, Adrianna Papell skirt, the red lipstick and the mischievous glint in Donohue’s eyes make this a standout. I’m on record plenty of times not loving shoes in the beige/nude zone, but these Carmen Steffens pumps work like a charm with this look.
It’s not just TV that is getting the roundtable treatment and both the Tony actresses and actors are featured this week. There is so much to love about this group of women and the styling of the shoot is far less fussy and far less pastel infused than the drama TV actress edition. The vibe here is pretty chill and the whole conversation which you can watch below is super charming and really interesting.
I am pretty new to all things Broadway – my first show was two years ago this week when Michelle Williams was in Cabaret – so there is plenty I didn’t realize before I watched this. Namely how dangerous performing on Broadway can be.I couldn’t find the fashion credits, but I’m just gonna go ahead and assume that Michelle Williams is wearing Louis Vuitton and while I can’t see her feet I’m also gonna assume that she is wearing some form of the chunky boots (see Alicia Vikander below). This photo in the midst of getting a makeup touch up is ultimate Michelle Williams and therefore I heart it hard.I know I should probably hate these boots and yet the 90s teen in me loves everything about them and knows they would have been my dream shoe in 1999. In fact this whole Alicia Vikander look is peek teen Emma and I love everything about it. Vikander is one of the Louis Vuitton campaign stars who attended the Resort 2017 Rio de Janeiro show at the weekend and the location is a stunner. You can view the collection here. From Rio to the UK and the Lady Dior Pub as part of the Dior Express which ended with the Resort collection getting showcased at Blenheim Palace. Kiernan Shipka looks every level of joyful in a red turtleneck and the photos of her from this event give the impression that she is having the best time. Which I adore. Kate Mara’s white frock is also pretty great (which I would personally avoid for spilling reasons) and maybe there will be a lot more Dior in the yes red carpet column over this award season. Maybe. Also where is JLaw? Okay so the next two outfits are from last week, but somehow I missed them and much like polka dots I am here for all the star print ensembles; Rose Byrne in Fall 2016 Valentino ticks all these boxes. Diane Kruger’s mini Marc Jacobs dress is giving me Etsy disco ball vibes and she is crushing her red carpet choices as per at the Sky premiere in Berlin.
TV award season is gearing up with roundtables and For Your Consideration events – initial Emmy voting starts June 13 – and this means plenty of fun frocks. This isn’t just an accolade considering time and we’ve got three different award ceremonies included in this week’s round-up. Plus Vulture Fest and talk show appearances all embracing bold color and pattern. At the Homeland FYCEmmy panel Claire Danes goes all in on the Peter Pilotto florals and this is a very different and fun take on the usual summer botanical styling. Also at the panel they discussed season 6 and the fate of Peter Quinn with this extremely vague description from showrunner Alex Gansa “How Peter Quinn’s character is gonna be dramatized this year is going to surprise people, and it may not be what you think.”Roksanda Ilincic is a go to bold color favorite of mine and Lizzy Caplan’s yellow Roksanda Ilincic dress paired with chunky strappy sandals is ideal attire for her appearance on The Late Show and the wedding I am attending on Saturday. Might be too late/pricey to get hold of it. Caplan with a shorter choppy ‘do is also the dream. Sparkly metallic shoes and matching tops and skirts for both Shiri Appleby and Constance Zimmer at Vulture Fest and my anticipation levels are high for the return of UnREAL. Zimmer’s all red approach edges out Appleby’s delicate crop top/skirt number, but only just and I am so ready for more Quinn and Rachel in my life.More crop top/florals from Jessica Williams at the Peabody Awards (The Daily Show was one of the recipients) and she looks cool as fuck in this outfit. My 2 Dope Queens catch-up has been going well so far and I would highly recommend this podcast for people who like to laugh. Also at the Peabody Awards the Mr Robot guys continue to dominate in their menswear choices and they’ve got casual, smart/casual (as above) and fancy pants nailed. Swoon levels set to high.Mindy Kaling looks stunning in bold blue Elizabeth Kennedy at the Gracie Awards Gala, which is a less dramatic than the Elizabeth Kennedy gown she wore to the Oscars but I think packs a bigger punch. This is one intense backdrop at the Obie Awards and Danai Gurira continues to mix it up on the red carpet in a fun summery ensemble. Perfect for celebrating the Best Ensemble Performance for her play Eclipsed. I am very much looking forward to seeing what she will wear to the Tonys in a couple of weeks. Also at the Obie Awards and part of the Best Ensemble for Eclipsed is Lupita Nyong’o in a hard to pull off length Prada dress. Pleats means shimmying perfection and this bold color and pattern even against this dizzying backdrop is producing all the heart eyes. The above Tonys remark also definitely applies to Lupita.
A fun mix of casual and glam this week with Upfronts fashion (for more from the Fox and NBC panels head here) delivering some “Out of the Box” sartorial highs. Plus Cannes gives us red carpet decadence and a dash of chic French Rivera daytime photocall outfits. Oh and there is an extra special treat at the end.It wasn’t a surprise considering the ratings and the fact that Hayley Atwell had already been cast on another ABC show (Conviction – watch the promo here), but the Agent Carter cancellation still hurts and I’m sad we’re not going to be getting any more Peggy adventures (for now).
I will be watching Conviction based on its star (and Francie from Alias is in it!) and Atwell is giving me even more positive feelings towards jumpsuits in this strapless number.Constance Wu’s got the ideal blend of casual and cool in this dress which is giving me early 80s sports vibes (maybe because I wrote this dedication to athleisure wear this week) at the ABC Upfront event. Love the bold pink lip color with the mint green of the frock.More lipstick treats from Martha Plimpton in an outfit which is ticking all the pocket and excellent office vibes boxes.Krysten Ritter making another “Out of the Box” appearance switching out stunning crimson for studded and sparkly Zuhair Murad at the Webby Awards. Ritter is another red lip color queen. Kirsten Dunst continues to crush it on all levels at Cannes and this aerial shot of her walking the Loving red carpet in a delicate (and okay maybe slightly bridal, but who cares) Dior Couture gown is pretty stunning. Dior it turns out is a much better brand for Dunst than JLaw if this festival is anything to go by. Also check out Dunst on the cover of the new Hollywood Reporter Emmy roundtable issue.A very busy time for Ruth Negga with Preacher about to premiere on AMC and a performance in Loving which has been getting rave reviews at Cannes. A gold long sleeve pleated Suno frock is maybe a little too fall for Cannes, but I think she looks fantastic. Excellent choice of footwear with bronze sandals that gives this ensemble a more summery feel.Kristen Stewart looks like she has been having a blast at Cannes this year and she’s been wearing a whole lot of Chanel (not a surprise) over the course of the festival. This daytime look at the Personal Shopper photocall is my favorite (you can read about/see the rest here) and this is ultimate Chanel cool. The sunglasses and her general vibe also helps. Co-stars Sigrid Bouaziz and Nora von Waldstatten are also slaying their daytime style and I particularly love Bouaziz’s ultra-mini patterned frock.Ending this week on an excellent (and dreamy) Rolling Stone cover note with Oscar Isaac smoldering it up a storm. Yes the release of this cover derailed work yesterday afternoon. The interview is great and this might be my favorite anecdote for obvious reasons “In high school, he began writing an invitation to Claire Danes, then the teen star of My So-Called Life, to appear in one of his productions, but he reconsidered.”
Cannes kicks off this week and jury member Kirsten Dunst is already slaying all over the place in both casual and evening wear. There is a whole yellow theme this week and we’ve got great BAFTA style. Plus some bonus runway joy.Everything about this Kirsten Dunst Cannes Jury photocall look is perfection right down to the wedges, but really the yellow Dior (yes Dior can pull a stunner out the hat still) dress and the red lipstick is what has me going full heart eyes emoji. It is also giving me flashes of The Two Faces of January; a movie I watched on a plane and I enjoyed for all things Dunst, Oscar Isaac and the A+ costume design. And for the evening Kiki goes for ethereal floral beauty in pink and red Gucci. As with Claire Danes, my love for Dunst goes way back to my teens with things like The Virgin Suicides and I am so excited to see what other delights she will have on offer over the festival.Mads Mikkelsen is also on the jury and he has every right to look this pleased with himself as he is a tuxedo wearing dreamboat. This helps fill in the very big hole left by Hannibal in terms of men’s style and Mads.More yellow thrills from Cannes with Anna Kendrick hitting up the Cafe Society premiere in a bold Stella McCartney gown.We said goodbye to Cush Jumbo’s Lucca Quinn this week and I cannot wait to see what she does next. For now here is Jumbo at the BAFTA TV Awards in gold Michael Kors and she looks incredible.Maisie Williams is pretty in sparkly metallic pink at the BAFTAs and this Antonio Berardi mini dress continues Williams’ funkyred carpethot streak.Ending this week’s yellow infused “Out of the Box” with Danielle Brooks walking the runway for Christian Siriano’s new Lane Bryant plus-size collection. The rooftop event showcased the collection, the city and the models in the most fabulous way.
Also this week saw the release of a new Orange is the New Black trailer ahead of its premiere next month and tension levels at Litchfield look set to increase.
This is what I was trying to watch on Wednesday when my internet went kaput so now is a very good time to give a shout out to my friend Tony for taking pity on me and letting me set up shop in his front room so I can do some work (and watch things like this). Fingers crossed by Monday all normal service will resume.
