2014 Emmy Nominations – Costumes (Updated to Include Winners)

The 2014 Emmy nominations were announced this morning (for the full list head here) and while I have many thoughts regarding the omissions – The Americans, Tatiana Maslany and The Good Wife in the drama series category just for starters – I wanted to highlight the shows that have been nominated for what we like to talk about a lot here and that is costume design.

There are two costume categories; Outstanding Costume Design for a Series and Outstanding Costume Design for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special and those nominees are below. I would have loved to see Masters of Sex, HannibalThe AmericansSleepy HollowThe Mindy ProjectScandal and The Good Wife feature in the nominations -yes all the shows I write about regularly – however it is a very strong field and some of my favorite costumes from this year are featured on this list of nominees.

Keri Russell Talks The Americans: Playing a Complex Character, Awards and the Season 2 Twists

Pre-Emmy season is in full swing and there is an array of group discussions and one to one interviews on offer from outlets such as The Hollywood ReporterVariety and Goldderby. One half of The Americans lead duo spoke to Goldderby this week in a chat that covers the major twist of season 2, what this means for her character Elizabeth going forward next year and what aspects of The Americans she both enjoys and finds most challenging.

The Americans ElizabethThe spy hijinks are fun, but for Keri Russell (and I’d have to agree with her as a viewer) it is the complex marriage/dynamic between Elizabeth and Philip that is what keeps this project fresh and exciting. It goes back to the drama actress roundtable Russell took part in for The Hollywood Reporter and she cites this here saying how in film, the roles for women are often the girlfriend or the mother who are there to say “honey, you can do it” to the leading male figure and this isn’t necessarily the case in television. With The Americans quite often Elizabeth is the tough, stoic one and what might be considered as traditional roles are redefined and reexamined. Coming from the girl who played Felicity, Russell does still find this hilarious.

One of Russell’s favorite moments from this season also provided one of the biggest challenges and it’s when Elizabeth starts to question how Philip is when he’s playing Clark with Martha. What starts out as gentle prodding turns into one of the hardest scenes to watch (and perform) and the aspects Russell likes is the “weird, blurry, complicated stuff and I think that’s when the show is at its best.” With regard to this episode Russell also mentions how incredible Danish director Charlotte Sieling is and scenes portraying Elizabeth’s vulnerability are hard, but they are ultimately the most rewarding.

Wigs come up of course, as does the major twist at the end of the season finale and how this might impact Elizabeth and Philip’s relationship next year. Fundamentally, Russell points out conflicts about parenting style and opinions exist in all relationships and it’s just so happens in this world it might involve your child getting recruited by the KGB. As we saw with Jared this can have devastating consequences.

Early awards success with Felicity and the Golden Globes comes up, as does Russell’s recent nomination for the Critics’ Choice Awards, although she thinks that Matthew Rhys (or “the Welshman” as she refers to him) is the more likely of the pair to get an Emmy nod this year.

The Best of the Emmys 2013: Amy Poehler and Tina Fey

There were probably more lows than highs during the 2013 Emmy telecast, particularly during the musical numbers and rushed thank you speeches. One highlight came early on after a very lackluster opening; Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to the rescue. Heckling from the front row about how terrible the intro was (they were kidding, but there is truth in these jokes), they donned 3D glasses and had a twerking reference that didn’t feel stale. Bonus Hugh Dancy and Claire Danes laughing behind the pair.

They also presented the first award (that went to Merritt Wever, yay!) and took an interesting trip up to the stage.

Neither Tina Fey nor Amy Poehler won in their acting category and while I don’t begrudge Julia Louis-Dreyfus winning for Veep, it’s hard to believe that Poehler has never won in this category (same goes for Jon Hamm and all his Mad Men nominations/no wins). As Parks and Recreation showrunner Mike Schur put on Twitter “I simply do not understand it. #Poehler

Tina Fey didn’t go home empty handed as she won in the comedy writing category with Tracey Wigfield for the 30 Rock finale.

Now to their dresses and Tina Fey is stunning in this cobalt blue Narciso Rodriguez gown. Fey has a habit of playing it safe with darker colors and this bold blue affair shows that she can work a more daring and confident look.

Amy Poehler’s Basler dress is not as striking, but I do really like the pocket detail that makes this more than just another black gown. The orange Irene Neuwirth earrings are a nice touch, particularly when coupled with the simple ponytail.

Emmys 2013: Red Carpet Highlights

It’s a busy day of fashion and TV thanks to last night’s Emmys (for my brief thoughts on the show head here) and while monochrome was a big trend, bold color and the standard nude tones were also big players on the red carpet. This post is for those dresses that don’t fall into one easy category and this post features a couple of dresses that still has me pondering whether they’re a hit or miss.

Let’s get to it!

Zooey Deschanel Emmys

Zooey Deschanel has a habit of wearing princess type gowns with a 1950s influence so this Barbarella looking icy blue J. Mendel number is a huge surprise. You can’t see it in this photo but the dress had a huge sexy slit up one leg and I’m so glad to see Deschanel opting for something outside of her standard wheelhouse. She looks amazing which almost makes up for the lack of New Girl nominations. Almost.

Kiernan Shipka 2013 emmys

Kiernan Shipka continues to impress with her age appropriate red carpet looks and this floral Delpozo frock is perfect for the 13-year-old; yes at 13 Shipka has already outshone every good fashion moment I have ever had. This dress could come across as too fussy which is why the ponytail/minimal makeup works and I don’t think we’re ready for Shipka to go for the Taylor Momsen raccoon eyes approach – now or ever.

Kerry Washington Emmys 2013

Kerry Washington was top of my red carpet most anticipated list and I’m disappointed with the Marchesa gown. I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about it and while I like the floral embellishments, it’s also reading wedding gown. I think if my expectations weren’t so high I would like this fine, but considering all of the other exquisite dresses she has worn this year it doesn’t quite hit the mark. It does fall into the Olivia Pope color scheme though and as always she looks flawless. It’s just not the dress I was hoping for.

Claire Danes emmys

Following closely behind Kerry Washington on that anticipated list, was Claire Danes and this is another dress that had me wrinkling my nose in disappointment, especially after what she wore last year. I’m not a huge fan of blush tone gowns which might be why I’m finding it hard to get excited about either of these dresses and with Danes this Armani Privé number washes her out. I do like the change in hairstyle and her makeup is also a win, more accessorizes would help.

Danes does get red carpet legend status for crashing Lena Dunham’s E! interview and chatting about her Scandal obsession with the Girls star. A Romeo and Juliet reference was also thrown in regarding their Showtime/HBO standing; this has me reaching for those angel wings I’ve been holding onto for a Romeo + Juliet revival.

Christina Hendricks Emmys

Christina Hendricks doesn’t always get it right on the red carpet and designers inexplicably seem to have a hard time with her body shape, not so with Christian Siriano who always hits the mark with Hendricks. Hendricks described this gown as looking like a Sargent painting, a reference that was lost on Seacrest (Twitter quickly deduced that Madame X is the painting). Incredible from H to T (yeah I’ve been watching too much Top Model).

65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - ArrivalsMindy Kaling’s eggplant colored Edition by Georges Chakra dress is not the sparkly number that you might expect from Kaling and as with Deschanel I like this change up. Hair and makeup are understated and because of the embellished neckline accessorize beyond a cute clutch aren’t needed.

Carrie Preston Emmy 2013

Carrie Preston won an Emmy last weekend for her guest starring work on The Good Wife and she shone on the red carpet in this pale pink Romona Keveza gown with a touch of black detail. Preston’s incredible auburn locks instantly make her standout and this is another winning look.

Emmys 2013 Red Carpet: The Best of the Monochromes

Last night the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards took place in Los Angeles and the show was a mixed bag featuring unnecessary extended musical numbers, winners both predictable and surprising, a seemingly random dedication to 1963 and a band that played the winners off in record time (apparently a performance by Elton John is more important than the actual awards themselves). The direction felt all over the place and if it wasn’t for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler the awards opener would have been a huge dud (please host the Golden Globes again).

Luckily the fashion on the red carpet wasn’t such a shambles and first up is the women who are rocking the big monochromatic trend.

Anna Gunn Emmys 2013

Anna Gunn won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a drama category; a well deserved winner for that walk of despair into the swimming pool and her subsequent breakdown on the first half of Breaking Bad’s final season. Wearing Romona Keveza, Gunn looks stunning in a dress that is simple and elegant.

Merritt Wever Emmys

Merritt Wever! Another winner and not just for Nurse Jackie as she gave the best speech of the night that got straight to the point “Thank you so much! I’ve gotta go, bye.” While Wever doesn’t look all that convinced in the above photo, I think she looks incredible and I’m so happy that she won. Bonus points for an amazing lip color choice and for being generally awesome. It’s already been said on here countless times but can Elizabeth stay on New Girl please?

Elisabeth Moss Emmys

Breaking the “if you wear a monochromatic dress you will win” cycle is Elisabeth Moss and I’m pretty bummed out that both Top of the Lake and Mad Men went home with nothing. Moss is a vision in Andrew Gn and her blonde choppy cut continues to serve her well as this awards cycle is the best we’ve seen Moss yet. As with Wever, Moss has opted for a bold red lip color and is the key to setting off a great black and white ensemble.

Morgan Saylor Emmys

Now to one of the younger stars of the red carpet and Homeland’s Morgan Saylor; this Honor gown is perfect for an 18 year old as it’s not too prom but it also doesn’t age her up to 30. One thing I would change is her hair as it looks a little too casual for an event like this, nicely played with the red lips and makeup that isn’t too severe though. I’m hoping that season 3 of Homeland will give her a story that is less Kim Bauer like, she’s a really great young actress and I don’t want her bogged down in contrived melodrama.

Julianna Margulies Emmy 2013

Julianna Margulies was on hand to present because somehow she wasn’t nominated for The Good Wife and so this Reed Krakoff dress is a little more on the relaxed side. Yes it resembles a fancy bed sheet, but sometimes this can work too and maybe I’m just very excited by the return of The Good Wife next Sunday – yes on the same night as the Breaking Bad finale – but I think she looks fantastic.

Variety Comedy Writers Panel: Talking “The Comeback”

Pre-Emmy nominations saw multiple panels popping up as actors, writers and directors took time out of the hiatus to discuss their shows for a range of publications. Nominations have since been announced and the Emmys will be held next month. One panel that I missed in June comes from Variety and it’s rather timely in relation to the TV Ate My Wardrobe summer rewind.

The panel features Fred Armisen, Mindy Kaling, Mike Schur, Dan Goor and Michael Patrick King; Schur is the ultimate crossover as he has worked with the rest of the participants (on Parks and Recreation, The Office and The Comeback). As we have been watching The Comeback for the first time, I was delighted to hear Mike Schur bring up his experience of working on The Comeback with Michael Patrick King. The episode they mention is next up on our watching schedule (“Valerie Saves the Show) and they talk about the difference in tone between the writers’ room and on set. Mike Schur thinks it is much better to have actors and writers that interact in a positive way and as we have seen so far on The Comeback this isn’t the case for Valerie as the writers hate her.

It’s an engaging and lively discussion as you would expect from a group of comedy writers and it doesn’t just feel like they are just regurgitating the same old anecdotes that we have heard before.

They also discuss “The Poehler Doctrine” which is something all comedy shows should adhere to.

New Girl Star Jake Johnson Talks Emmys and Drinking Buddies

Following on from Max Greenfield’s Gold Derby chat, co-star Jake Johnson also sat down with the awards prediction hub to talk New Girl, recent plaudits and the success he has had over the last two years. Here at TV at My Wardrobe we are all aboard the Emmy nomination train for Jake Johnson because he’s been New Girl’s MVP this season.

Jake Johnson has submitted in the lead category and this was originally a suggestion by Max Greenfield, while they joke that Greenfield was just removing the competition it’s actually a smart move thanks to the Nick/Jess focus of the latter half of the season. Johnson has been nominated already for the Critics’ Choice Awards and the forthcoming TCA’s. Johnson is quick to praise creator Liz Meriwether, the writers and his co-stars; the ensemble is an important factor but he would like Meriwether to get some solo recognition as “she’s really the engine behind it.”

As with Max Greenfield they discuss what episode Johnson might submit if he does get nominated. Episodes that get mentioned include “Chicago,” “Cooler” and the first Tran episode (“Menzies”). Gold Derby editor Chris Beachum gives Johnson some advice saying that “Chicago” might be too emotional as an Emmy submission episode and that broader comedic performances tend to be what Emmy voters have previously gone for. If this is the case then “Pepperwood” would be a suitable choice, though I am partial to “Cooler” for obvious reasons.

The trailer for Jake Johnson’s new movie Drinking Buddies was released yesterday and he mentions this in the Gold Derby interview. It’s a project that Johnson says that he is very proud of and hopes that it gets the same traction as Safety Not Guaranteed. The film also stars Olivia Wilde, Ron Livingston and Anna Kendrick and is heavily improvised (plus they’re really drinking beer). Plus Johnson is sporting a rather amazing beard the likes of which we’ve only previously seen on New Girl in his Caroline post-break up video. Really, it looks incredible.

Max Greenfield Talks New Girl, Emmys and the Veronica Mars Movie

Max Greenfield recently spoke to Gold Derby editor Daniel Montgomery about Emmy nominations, a mix up with episode submissions last year and whether or not he will be showing up as Deputy Leo on the new Veronica Mars movie that started shooting this week.

Last year Max Greenfield was nominated for his work as Schmidt on New Girl in the Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy category, a category that also featured four Modern Family actors and Bill Hader. This year it is likely to be similarly packed with the Modern Family cast and in a sensible move Jake Johnson has submitted himself for lead actor. While Jake Johnson has been receiving well deserved plaudits this year (including a TCA and Critics’ Choice nomination) and the Schmidt hype has died down a bit, he still delivered a strong and memorable turn in season 2.

In this conversation they talk about a big mix up with last year’s Emmy submission episodes; Zooey Deschanel had chosen “Bad in Bed” and Greenfield “Control,” unfortunately the episodes got switched and voters received “Control” for Deschanel and “Bad in Bed” for Greenfield. There isn’t any resentment for this mistake and Greenfield chalks it up as one of those things that happens. They also discuss what episode Greenfield might submit this year and “Table 34,” “Tinfinity” and “Bathtub” are mentioned by Gold Derby readers. Greenfield likes the Tugg/Tagg Romney episode (“Fluffer”) and if I had to pick I would suggest “Quick Hardening Caulk” where Schmidt is determined to get a lionfish as a surrogate for Cece.

They talk about one of my favorite guest stars of this season – Merritt Wever who played Schmidt’s college girlfriend Elizabeth – and like most of the audience Greenfield wants her back on the show asking an obviously rhetorical question “Isn’t Merritt great?” Yes, yes she is.

It’s a fun conversation and Greenfield is sporting a very un-Schmidt like beard; could this have anything to do with his role of Deputy Leo on Veronica Mars? Greenfield confirms that he will be making an appearance in the new film, but don’t expect a substantial role as he thinks he’s only working on it for a day. Still, this is exciting news and he seems very happy to be part of this reunion.

Hollywood Reporter’s 2013 Comedy Showrunner Roundtable

The Emmy nominations will be announced on July 18 and so the roundtables featuring potential recipients continue. While there are too many to cover here at TV Ate My Wardrobe we want to focus on the ones that provoke both entertaining and interesting discussions and the comedy showrunner table has done just this. This Hollywood Reporter panel includes both network and cable faces; Mike Schur (Parks and Recreation), Greg Daniels (The Office), Liz Meriwether (New Girl), Steve Molaro (The Big Bang Theory), Matthew Carnahan (House of Lies) and Bruce Helford (Anger Management).

A large portion of the conversation focuses on the evolving business model of television and how the ratings system still hasn’t caught up with the way that audiences consume their favorite shows (it is mentioned several times that New Girl is a big DVR ratings performer). They discuss past and present success stories on network television with Seinfeld as an example of a show that didn’t fit the broad cookie cutter type sitcom and while most of the shows represented have relatively low numbers, Steve Molaro is the showrunner on The Big Bang Theory which is the highest rated sitcom at the moment. NBC has been the focus of a lot of the sitcom ratings think pieces because it used to be the sitcom powerhouse and now it languishes behind everyone else. Mike Schur makes the point that cable networks have a specific brand and can tailor their programming to this, whereas networks have a responsibility to have broad appeal.

Schur also points out that there is too much to watch “I’m going to die from starvation because I have too much TV to watch! Wherever you are in the world, and whatever kind of person you are, there’s 50 shows that are great for you.” This echoes what Alan Sepinwall said in a recent piece and was a topic of discussion in a recent roundtable discussion that I took part in (and I have so many shows to catch up on with ScandalGame of Thrones and Orphan Black being just three of them).

Other topics include product placement (Liz Meriwether has regrets), studio notes and the ways they get around these, the big Nick and Jess decision (others weigh in on their experiences of ‘with they/won’t they’ couples) and how the dramatic aspects of half hour shows make award classification a tricky task.

Chris Messina and the Art of a Strong Supporting Role

The Emmy pre-nomination discussion season continues with a look at supporting actors over at The Hollywood Reporter. This group of individuals might not be the star of their show but they are just as important in many ways.

The one person that I want to focus on from this group is Chris Messina who has been playing these strong supporting roles since his arc on the final season of Six Feet Under as Claire’s love interest Ted. Messina is currently in The Mindy Project and will be returning to The Newsroom as a guest star in July. Just a glance at his IMDb page and his credits from 2012 reveals a variety of roles in both film and TV including ArgoCeleste and Jesse ForeverRuby Sparks and the final season of Damages. Yes they are all supporting parts, but Messina is an actor who has an impact whether he is in two scenes or twenty. 

supporting_actor_hollywood_reporterIn The Mindy Project Messina plays the curmudgeon of the office, he’s bitter about love thanks to his divorce, but beneath this tough cool exterior Danny cares about his co-works and his job as an OB/GYN.  It’s the playful banter with Mindy and the chemistry between these two actors that kept me watching even when the show was having teething problems. Without this dynamic and his performance I might have quit The Mindy Project midseason, but I’m glad that I didn’t as the show has got both stronger and funnier.

One story that has developed as the season progressed and took a strong turn in the finale is that Mindy and Danny have entered ‘will they/won’t they’ territory. This isn’t a surprise as romantic comedies are an obsession of the lead character and they have the whole love/hate opposites attract thing going on. While this could be a tad early as the friendship between Mindy and Danny has more to give before romantic complications set in, the final scene in the season 1 finale made me forget these reservations for a moment as it was crackling with tension. I’m pretty sure this was thanks to Messina and like Mindy I pretty much held my breath when he took her glasses off.

Messina

As I’ve been writing this I’ve had Six Feet Under on in the background because it’s been a while since I’ve seen these final episodes. To come in this late to a show like this and leave an impact is hard, but it’s another case of great chemistry and despite Ted and Claire’s fundamental differences (hey he’s a Republican after all) they work as a couple, particularly after Claire’s other less functional relationships. 

Messina recently took part in a Skype chat as part of the DP/30 Emmy Watch series. It’s a long interview (which you can watch below) as he discusses his days on the stage, his dancing ambition, how he landed the part on Six Feet Under just as he was about to give up on Hollywood and his current role in The Mindy Project.

I have no doubt that Chris Messina would be fantastic in a lead role, but there’s also nothing to suggest that these supporting parts are less worthy. As this Hollywood Reporter piece shows (and the supporting comedy actress panel from yesterday) sometimes these supporting characters are more beloved than the title character.  

To quote my friend and Mad Men conversation partner Kerensa Cadenas the reason why Messina is so versatile and why he leaves such an impression is because he’s a “smart brodawg.” He can play cocky, but he has the intellect and charm to back it up.
