Sundance Film Festival “Power of Story: Serious Ladies” Panel (Full Video)

27 Jan

The Sundance Film Festival is in full swing and at the weekend this fascinating panel featuring Mindy Kaling, Lena Dunham, Jenji Kohan and Kristen Wiig with New Yorker TV critic Emily Nussbaum moderating took place and they discussed their work within the current television and film climate.

Sundance panelThis is the kind of panel that I would love to see live or just go to a bar with these amazing women; this isn’t quite the dream hangout but hey I am so happy to see the Sundance Film Festival YouTube channel sharing the whole chat.

Topics covered include all the lazy gender specific questions that get thrown at them as writers who happen to be women, opportunities on TV, working with men who are feminists and using humor as a tool for debate. Likability vs. relatability – this is Emily Nussbaum’s essay on the topic – comes up as well as the idea that some viewers have trouble separating their character from who they actually are.

Romantic comedies and the recent attempts at this genre on film and TV including The Mindy Project get referenced and what kind of rom-coms they like. The all important “What next?” when a couple gets together is also mentioned and adding to ‘this panel is pretty much my everything’ feelings Jenji Kohan then cites You’re the Worst. This is further fueled by a sex scene question that stems from this episode of The Comeback.

And amazing Sundance style from all panelists. Jenji Kohan’s boots are next level. Excellent knitwear across the board. Plus Kristen Wiig further endears herself to me by revealing herself to be a spiller. Spiller solidarity.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

15 Jan

Everyone is getting back to set and this means it is time for the first “Behind the Insta-Scenes” of the new year with bonus Golden Globes photos involving worlds colliding, pooches and general shenanigans.

Treats from returning shows like Broad City and Looking, plus another excellent guest star making their way to The Mindy Project are all featured below.

Natasha Lyonne captures some of the Orange is the New Black cast (including herself) all dressed up in the all-mirrored ladies room.

Fargo meets Fargo with Allison Tolman and Frances McDormand at the Golden Globes. I’ve already talked about Tolman’s dress here, but I am all over McDormand’s beads and DGAF vibes.

I finally started Jane the Virgin! Five episodes in and it is love. Gina Rodriguez’s Globes essentials include Jane watching over her, which obviously did the trick.

Dogs and ball gowns with Allison Williams; this shows the beautiful detail on her Armani Privé gown in a more informal setting.

The place names and table decorations sure are nice.

The Looking season 2 premiere was just as incredible as this tree is big/old. And just as delightful as the way the guys are posing in this photo.

Broad City is back! Start every dance party ever. And while I am a selfie stick sceptic, I will make an exception for Abbi and Ilana in this two part writers’ room shot.

Here it is from Ilana’s perspective.

*Sob* that Selfie is dunzo but here is John Cho making an appearance on The Mindy Project. In love with Mindy’s Oscar de la Renta belted tweed jacket and matching skirt.

Best of Elle’s Annual Women in Television Celebration

14 Jan

Lena Dunham covers the Elle Women in Television issue (out now) and last night the magazine hosted their annual event celebrating this issue and the many amazing women working in the television industry. Patterns and color aplenty!

Lena ElleThe lady of the hour and Lena Dunham floral Prada works like a charm as does the slicked back bob, smoky eyes and pink lip color.

Juliette LewisMore winter florals on display and Juliette Lewis is stunning in this beautiful dramatic skirt and high neck (nearing turtle territory) black sleeveless top.

Ellie Kemper and Gillian JacobsSo I’m a little on the fence with Gillian Jacobs crop and skirt combo, but Ellie Kemper is slaying it in red lace (more florals). A very cute pairing nonetheless.

Tracee Ellis RossThe scarlet dress trend continues as does Tracee Ellis Ross’ winning red carpet style.

Yara ShahidiTracee Ellis Ross’ Black-ish teen co-star Yara Shahidi is another doing the bold color patterned skirt with aplomb. Not so sure about open toed boots, but overall this is a very fun look.

Cat DeeleyCasual chic from Cat Deeley and I am coveting her Beetlejuice-esque blazer hard.

Constance ZimmerConstance Zimmer’s frock is ticking all the boxes of a perfect not too fancy, but still fancy enough dress – collar, belted and fun print (floral once again). Also bonus red lipstick points are awarded.

Xosha RoquemoreThe Mindy Project’s Xosha Roquemore is a vision of black and white outfit goodness with another crop top I find myself drawn to.

Elle groupClosing things out with a fun group shot with recent Golden Globe winner and Transparent creator Jill Soloway along with Glitterish’s Alison Sudol (from Transparent), Sia in striking orange and Whitney Cummings rocking a starry sky print dress.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

9 Jan

It is the first new “Out of the Box” of 2015 and after two weeks of near winter hibernation everyone is coming out to play for premieres, magazine covers, award shows and the TCA winter press tour.

Broad City S2 premiere Amy RyanBroad City returns in less than a week (Wednesday 14!) and after attending the Girls premiere a couple of days ago, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer took center stage at the Broad City premiere party. If I was ever to attempt a form of crop top then Abbi’s outfit is my platonic ideal of this with the sliveriest of stomach skin on show. Amy Ryan is one of many guest stars we can expect to see in season 3 and this is one super happy photo of awesome people.

Broad City premiereSpeaking of awesome people and because I couldn’t chose between these two photos from the premiere here are Abbi and Ilana (her white jacket is aces) doing the group party pose with SNL’s Kate McKinnon and the always amazing Carrie Brownstein (also wearing a coat to be coveted). Drawing hearts around this.

Viola DavisAt the People’s Choice Awards (which I know no one really cares about but hey there were a handful of great outfits) Viola Davis looks stunning in an Escada column of hot-pink. Plus when she won there was a good amount of shade throwing at the awful New York Times piece that was somehow intended as a compliment towards Davis. In her speech Davis said “Thank you Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers and Peter Nowalk for thinking of a leading lady who looks like my classic beauty.”

Melissa McCarthyEverything about Melissa McCarthy’s outfit is a win and the leather piping gives a chic and stylish edge stopping it from being just another all black ensemble. Bonus red lipstick points.

Allison JanneyAllison Janney co-hosted these awards so there were a variety of outfits and it is this sparkly Rani Zakhem number from the red carpet is the standout. Smoking hot.

Kit HaringtonIt is going to be a weekend of a lot of dudes in suits and Kit Harington shows how it is done (even with a simple suit the tailoring can be off) at the premiere of Testament of Youth. Skinny tie perfection.

Tina Fey and Ellie KemperSwitching things up and TCA winter press tour delivered on the floral attire from Tina Fey and Ellie Kemper as they discuss their new Netflix (and previously NBC) project The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. All 13-episodes will debut March 6 and I am already obsessing over Kimmy’s super colorful wardrobe from the promo pictures.

Lena Dunham ElleLena Dunham covers the Women in TV issue of Elle and while it doesn’t quite hit the polka dot highs of her Vogue cover from this time last year, the cover shot is still a striking. Bed hair win.

Allison WilliamsAnother Girls star magazine cover and the styling of this Glamour shot is still very Allison Williams without going down the preppy or princess route. The Bottega Veneta dress and relaxed sitting/slightly hunched posing is really working for me.

Girls Season 4 Premiere Red Carpet

6 Jan

Girls is back this Sunday for season 4 and this year’s big premiere went all out at the Natural History Museum in New York City. The show has also been renewed before this season has even aired and Lena Dunham covers the Women in TV issue of Elle (here’s the leaked cover shot); 2015 is starting well for the creator and star of Girls.

Girls S4 premiereOne thing I love about these ladies is that even though I might not always be a fan of their style choices they aren’t afraid to go with what they like; there isn’t four versions of the same thing. So Allison Williams has gone for a very Allison Williams super pretty princess Monique Lhuillier gown, with Jemima Kirke sticking to satin as she did for the last premiere red carpet. Zosia Mamet’s doing the red leather Alexander McQueen thing and while I’m not feeling this new hair color, Mamet does get bonus red lipstick points. Going for the whole 70s revival, which I am very into at the moment is Lena Dunham and this Creatures of the Wind dress looks wonderful on her.

Gillian Jacobs GirlsWhile I’m not sure about the sleeve cut outs – on this occasion they complicate a dress that doesn’t need complicating – I am very excited about Gillian Jacobs appearing this season. Plus her shoes are very cute.

Abbi and Ilana Girls premiereAbbi and Ilana! The Broad City duo are both doing the ‘casual cool but still premiere appropriate when it isn’t your show’ approach and my only concern is for Abbi’s bare legs in the New York winter. I want Abbi’s skirt and Ilana’s sweater tee in my life. And season 2 of Broad City (which is also back next week!).

Natasha Lyonne and Jenna LyonsAt the after party Natasha Lyonne and Jenna Lyons are working the amazing coats slung over their shoulders approach with some major layering going on for the J. Crew creative director (and Girls guest star). A handy winter tactic.

And here’s a bonus shot Lena Dunham posted on Instagram showing off some of the museum as she poses in a rather sweet photo with her mother Laurie Simmons.

Girls returns to HBO Sunday, January 11 and you can watch promos for the new season here and here. I am very much looking forward to what new music it will introduce me to this year.

Coming in 2015: TV Promo Roundup

13 Nov

The year isn’t over and yet we are already looking to January 2015 thanks to these promos from Comedy Central and HBO for their returning and brand new offerings coming in the new year.

http://youtu.be/NhvBC-Ml01E

Abbi and Ilana are back with colorful (and super dark) lipsticks, crop tops aplenty, a white power suit and a surprise appearance by a leopard print fascinator. Commence the Broad City dance party now as season 2 looks set to deliver once again on the funny and getting fucked up antics of a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite lady friendship. Broad City returns Wednesday, January 14.

From the Duplass brothers comes Togetherness and it’s going to be part of the Girls/Looking Sunday night block (starting January 11) which makes sense as it is another figuring out your shit tragic comedy/dramedy (or whatever we are now calling this genre). The cast/creators is why I am very excited and Amanda Peet’s line delivery at the end of the promo is perfect.

http://youtu.be/ott9VndhVEo

Looking gets the most teasery of teases with no episode footage and what comes down to a disco light party reminding us that Patrick is caught in a love triangle with Richie and Kevin. Plus there’s a whole lot of amazing facial hair. Season 2 gets an episode number bump with two more than last year and I’m looking forward to spending more time with these characters.

http://youtu.be/kB8y4Zp9UNc

Getting the longest preview treatment is Girls and this makes sense considering it has been on the longest; the characters are more established and there’s less mystery. Hannah’s moved to Iowa and she’s eating grapes for a snack, but this still leaves plenty of room for bad decisions and arguments aplenty. Marnie is still pining after Desi, Shoshanna is having a career/life crisis and a couple of people are getting arrested. Plus dancing, there’s always dancing.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

10 Oct

The summer might be over, but the best of this week’s style on “Out of the Box” showcases some surprising post summer light attire with business cute and plain white chic. Plus a couple of fantastic magazine covers focusing on showrunners and a splash of animal print color to close things out.

Aisha TylerAisha Tyler’s white mini dress (with pockets!) is jazzed up with some excellent shoe/clutch/bracelet accessories at the American Horror Story: Freak Show premiere and who cares if it is way past Labor Day; this looks amazing.

Karen Gillan KimmelKaren Gillan appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live in something that wouldn’t look out of place on a Taylor Swift post gym sidewalk strut and her legs go for miles. It’s a super cute outfit and I especially love the gold shoulder strap detail (at first I thought she was carrying more than one bag). Short hair is still working wonders even if she’s rocking long wigged locks on Selfie.

Diane Kruger joining Instagram has already given me one of my favorite photos from this week (the cat pictures she posted are also pretty wonderful) and she also unveiled her Australian Harper’s Bazaar cover shot. As they are heading into the warm season down under this Chanel ensemble is perfectly spring boho and a striking image.

Shonda Rhimes THR coverThere is only one option really for who should cover the Power Showrunners issue of The Hollywood Reporter and that’s Shonda Rhimes as the Thursday night TGIT Shondaland drama block – Grey’s AnatomyScandalHow to Get Away with Murder – is killing it in the ratings. In the issue Rhimes discusses a whole host of things including early creative friction on Grey’s Anatomy with studio executives and the recent New York Times profile where for some reason they thought it was okay to label her an “angry black woman” and the subsequent reaction to this horrific piece. Rhimes also discusses returning to Dartmouth this summer, which in turn reveals a hint of what her Mindy Project cameo will entail. The interview is fascinating and can be read in full here.

IMG_1022From one showrunner to another and Lena Dunham is still on her book tour for Not That Kind of Girl, plus this week she has guest edited Stylist magazine. Stylist is celebrating its fifth anniversary so what better way to combine the two than Dunham leaping out of a tiered cake. The cover shot by photographer Autumn De Wilde is also a nod to Dunham’s mother Laurie Simmons as legs are a repeated image in her work. It’s a fun, playful cover and the color palette really helps the image stand out.

Natalie Dormer zebra printClosing this week out with Natalie Dormer in a bold red and orange zebra print House of Holland dress at People’s One to Watch LA event. Dormer is still going for full dramatic side sweep hair as a result of her Mockingjay Cressida styling and as an “Out of the Box” regular I think we will be seeing more of Dormer on here come the huge Mockingjay promotional tour. The chunky straps on Dormer’s Jimmy Choo sandals are maybe a bit too thick for the length of this dress combined with the strong black zebra stripes, but this is a minor complaint.

“Not That Kind of Girl” – The Ask Lena Dunham Advice Video Series

25 Sep

Lena Dunham’s book Not that Kind of Girl is released next week (September 30) and to promote this venture Dunham is dishing out advice in a video series featuring questions about feminism, body image, sex and friendship. Pretty much everything you would expect from the creator of Girls.

Lena DunhamHere’s a selection of our favorites from the series and there is a hint of where certain Girls storylines originated from.

On being a feminist and the clothes you wear:

On body confidence and being plus size:

On sleeping with dudes who are not good for you:

On OCD and mental health issues:

On bad sex:

On feeling jealous when other people are successful:

For more on the advice video front Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls has an excellent Ask Amy series and Rookie’s Ask a Grown Man/Woman is also pretty great. These are both primarily aimed at teenagers, but the advice is super useful to all ages.

Head here to watch the whole 12-part video series and Not that Kind of Girl hits both physical and digital shelves Tuesday, September 30.

Amy Poehler’s New Book Cover and Synopsis

28 May

October is a busy month for celebrity memoirs (this tends to happen in the lead up to the holidays) with Neil Patrick Harris, Alan Cumming and Lena Dunham all bringing out books. The one book I will be buying/pre-ordering/wishing it was out already is Yes Please by Amy Poehler. On the Barnes & Nobel site you can pre-order it now and get a glimpse of the cover (which you can see below), plus an official description:

“In Amy Poehler’s highly anticipated first book, Yes Please, she offers up a big juicy stew of personal stories, funny bits on sex and love and friendship and parenthood and real life advice (some useful, some not so much), like when to be funny and when to be serious. Powered by Amy’s charming and hilarious, biting yet wise voice, Yes Please is a book is full of words to live by.”

yespleaseIt’s a simple and yet effective cover; the neon sign title stands out and I love the white vest, black pants and flats styling.

Today is the start of a BookExpo America and the four-day event will include Poehler, Dunham, Harris and Cumming as they promote their forthcoming memoirs. The expo attracts 20,000 people from the world of publishing with authors like John Green (The Fault in Our Stars) and Jonathan Tropper (This is Where I Leave You) discussing the forthcoming movie adaptations of their novels, as well as many authors promoting their new material.

Now I need to make sure I get through my always growing “To Read” pile before October (this photo is from 8 months ago and I’ve only added to it).

Yes Please will hit stores October 28.

Best of the 2014 Met Gala – Part One

6 May

The Met Gala is a lavish affair and the decadent red carpet showcases some of the more theatrical gowns; unlike something like the Oscars this event expects daring attire that might look out of place elsewhere. Last year’s punk theme was one many struggled with, in that they looked amazing but there was nothing particularly punk on display. Couturier Charles James is celebrated this year; both at the Met Gala and at the Met’s new Costume Institute exhibition as his designs revolutionized the world of fashion. Charles James was a perfectionist and he created incredibly structured and exquisite gowns. This is how fashion designers paid homage to this work and influence.

This is part one (for part two head here) and it is a picture heavy post. Enjoy!

Lena DunhamLast year Lena Dunham looked amazing and she’s done it once again; the Met Gala is where Dunham gets it right. Mullet dresses tend to make me shudder and yet this Giambattista Valli Spring 2014 Couture is rather beautiful. The floral embroidery is exquisite and while I would have maybe added a necklace, it is dramatic enough as it is.

Janelle MonaeI can’t resist a cape even if it could double as a tapestry and Janelle Monae’s Tadashi ensemble is the kind of theatricality this event demands. Monae shows how pants can be just as eye-catching as any fancy gown and this is one of the most memorable looks of the night.

Lake BellThe next two pieces are from Tommy Hilfiger and use his signature colors of red, white and blue. Hilfiger is all about the classic approach and Lake Bell’s red gown is beautiful in its simplicity. One way to add impact is with a statement necklace and bold lip color/minimal makeup enhances Bell’s look.

Zooey DeschanelZooey Deschanel wore Tommy Hilfiger last year and it’s no surprise to see her wearing a gown made by her recent collaborator. Details I adore include the feathered shoulders, and the stunning Chanel Ruban Mademoiselle necklace. The white belt and train add the necessary drama, however her hair is giving me images of 80s volume which on this occasion is not a good thing.

Taylor SwiftTaylor Swift was one of the only attendees who managed the punk theme and she’s once again on point in this Oscar de la Renta gown (minus the cat) in a gown that takes the structured element of Charles James’ work and runs with it. The punk theme saw a style departure for Swift, whereas this is very much in her style comfort range and she looks stunning once again.

Olivia MunnNow here’s one of my favorite approaches to hair styling at the Met Gala as Olivia Munn’s gold hairpiece and loose curls complement this stunning Diane von Furstenberg yellow gown. It’s maybe a bit too cleavy for this event, however the color is stunning and the long sleeves have a way of balancing out the plunging neckline. Munn isn’t overly done up either with just an orange pop on her lips.

Emmy RossumMore color and this time a floral explosion from Emmy Rossum in Carolina Herrera. It’s a structured ball gown and one of the more overt Charles James tributes.

Jessica PareAnother play on the floral look as Jessica Paré opts for Michael Kors and monochrome. This might be a case of needing a necklace and yet I think the lack of one adds to the elegance of the look, especially as Paré’s sleek updo, bright pink lip color and super sparkly earrings add the required impact.

Michelle WilliamsMichelle Williams keeps it simple and chic in shimmery Louis Vuitton. I adore this dress and I’m glad to see a variety of frock lengths, however this dress doesn’t scream Met Gala. Still super cute though.

Leighton MeesterLeighton Meester is going all 70s boho in gold Emilio Pucci. Pulling off both the plunging neckline and high leg slit, Meester looks amazing.

Maggie Gyllenhaal capeMaggie Gyllenhaal’s Valentino dress and matching cape is going to be pretty divisive and it might be cape bias, but I think this is terrific and hey it’s the Met Gala so these more costumey pieces are more than welcome. This also has a whole 70s thing going on with the color palette and dramatic dots (which you know, I’m also partial to). The super blonde pixie cut is also doing it for me.

Brie LarsonBrie Larson’s robot-esque space pajamas from Prada is another ensemble that might raise the wrong kind of eyebrows, but it’s getting only good eyebrows and hand claps from here. Setting it off is the hair twist as Larson goes all in.
