Out of the Box: Look of the Week

28 Mar

It’s week two of Paleyfest and this has delivered more fantastic outfits from the stars of shows like Mad MenMasters of SexAgents of SHIELDThe Mindy Project, Community and Veep. Here are the ones that stood out.

The Paley Center For Media's PaleyFest 2014 Honoring "Mad Men"The women of Mad Men work a variety of styles both on and off the show; however they don’t look like they are attending different events which can sometimes be an issue at these panels. Kiernan Shipka is once again showing that being a teenager doesn’t take away any fashion credibility and her Dolce & Gabbana floral dress is once again age appropriate and on point. Christina Hendricks does a nice job of honoring L’Wren Scott in an amazing green dress by the designer that flatters and accentuates those famous curves.

Jessica Paré is the most high fashion of the group (the absent January Jones also vies for this spot) and this Roksanda Ilincic frock looks pretty standard from this angle. What this shot is missing out is how extreme the half-wrap orange fold is and this is a dress that looks amazing in a lot of photos and a mess in others. Paré pulls it off even if I’m not in love with her shoes. Elisabeth Moss is showing off her fun side, which we have been seeing on the red carpet and in the recent New York magazine profile in a black mini Emilio Pucci number. The white lace panel and bow detail adds a hint of vintage and combining bold red lips and shoes adds that extra something to the outfit.

Chloe BennetI really shouldn’t like this Mason by Michelle Mason jumpsuit that Agent of SHIELD’s Chloe Bennet is wearing as I’ve made my feelings on jumpsuit’s clear last week and black tends to be the only kind of jumpsuit that I could even consider. For some reason I think this looks really great and I’m just going to go with it. The slightly different blue pumps make sure it’s not too matchy matchy and I am forever a sucker for pockets.

Annaleigh AshfordNow this is more my usual speed (pockets again) and Annaleigh Ashford from Masters of Sex looks incredibly charming in this Novis dress. I was worried the red pumps might be a step too far, but the more I look at them, the more they work. The variety of textures, pattern and color make this a frock to covet and I’m excited that Ashford’s Betty is returning for season 2.

Mindy Kaling and Chris MessinaThe Mindy Project is back next week after they left us on a kissing cliffhanger in January and here is a sneak peek of how adorable Chris Messina and Mindy Kaling look together. Kaling is wearing a beautiful emerald green jacquard Topshop high-waisted skirt and crop top; she explains in this month’s Vogue that “It’s really tempting to not take chances. But I don’t want to be fearful.” This sentiment sums up Kaling’s outfit decisions well and I love how she embraces fashion in this way even if it doesn’t always work. On this occasion it definitely does and this is great color on her.

Gillian JacobsAs Britta Perry, Gillian Jacobs doesn’t get to wear a whole array of party frocks – don’t get me wrong I love her endless supply of striped sweaters, plaid shirts and jeans – so at the Community panel it is good to see her bring it in House of Holland. The coral and navy starburst disco dress is a bold, fun choice.

Julia Louis Dreyfus PaleyFestVeep returns in a couple of weeks and it’s yet another show I need to catch up on (Game of Thrones is giving me so much side eye right about now). Julia Louis-Dreyfus looks super sophisticated in this charcoal grey getup; the black pattern and belting are both flattering and stops it from becoming just a dress for the office.

Mad Men Season 7 Artwork and Jessica Paré Covers Stylist

8 Mar

Mad Men returns for the first half of its final season in just over a month (Sunday, April 9) and the new artwork uses the classic Don Draper illustrated image from the opening credits with a psychedelic twist. Milton Glaser, the man behind the iconic “I ♥ NY” campaign and co-founder of New York magazine designed the poster and it’s treat for the eyes. The theorizing begins when a new Mad Men image is unveiled; last season’s double Don Draper is the most ambiguous and provoked a huge response, whereas other key art has been more straightforward like Don standing in an empty office for season 4 (and seem to have inspired the 50 Shades of Grey teaser). This is definitely the most colorful of the Mad Men campaigns so far and as always a drink is never far from Don Draper. With a trippy image like this it has me wondering whether Ken will be tap dancing again and whether Don will sink into oblivion.

Mad Men season 7It’s likely that there will be several Mad Men cast members covering magazines in the run up to the new season and kicking things off is Jessica Paré on Stylist.

photo1This is a departure from anything Megan related and there is always a push pull with magazine editorials between dressing the actors in clothes you would see on the show or embracing something more in tune with the current year we are in. Paré discusses her personal style “Truth be told I’m a pretty practical person so I do like the idea of mixing more accessible brands with designer” as well as what we already know about “Zou Bisou Bisou” –  “That song really stays in your head. It’s so catchy and you can’t get it out.” Don’t I know it; currently The Good Wife’s “Thicky Trick” is wrestling for its place for biggest earworm. Well, that and “Let it Go.”

Of course she doesn’t spill any secrets about what’s going to happen to Megan in season 7, though the much talked about Sharon Tate t-shirt is brought up “As far as I know it’s just a T-shirt; just a costume.” You can read the full interview here and Stylist is now available on the iPad (and it’s totally free!).

So there’s a little Mad Men taster and we will have much more coverage as April 9 approaches.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

22 Nov

It’s all about the color red on this edition of “Out of the Box” as both costuming on TV shows and public appearances have been hit by scarlet fever and as December is fast approaching (shh we have started our gift buying yet) we thought it was time to get into the festive spirit. Not that any of these outfits are celebrating the holidays, instead we have the uniform of the enemy, more coat envy, the launch of a new Banana Republic line and a bold red carpet statement.

Hessian Mask Sleepy HollowFirst up it’s those pesky Hessian riders on Sleepy Hollow and their uniform is made all the more menacing by their black masks (no there isn’t an Eyes Wide Shut party around the corner). The masks have a slight beaked quality and while they’re not as severe as the plague doctor masks it’s an incredibly unnerving look. In this week’s Sleepy Hollow we found out the original identity of the Headless Horseman; he’s Ichabod’s former BFF Abraham. Abraham was engaged to Katrina and well we all know who she ended up marrying. This development was unexpected and Abraham’s transformation involved not only offering up his soul but shedding everything about his appearance. Red is seldom used as a clothing choice outside of these flashbacks with Abbie and Ichabod sticking to blues, greys and blacks. This makes it instantly identifiable with being the color of the enemy.

Mindy red coatI’ve already discussed Jess’ red coat from this week’s New Girl and Mindy’s Smythe red floral brocade affair is yet another excellent outerwear offering. Mindy’s wardrobe is full of bright and bold pieces like this and costume designer Salvador Perez often puts Mindy in a variety of colors and textures. This ensemble includes two different monochromatic patterns (hearts and houndstooth) that shouldn’t go together with this crimson coat, but do. The red helps Mindy stand out in the sea of darker coat colors.

Jessica Pare Christina HendricksChristina Hendricks and Jessica Paré both shine in red tones at the launch party celebrating the new L’Wren Scott Collection for Banana Republic. While I would have preferred to see them without the draped sparkly cardigans and together they look super matchy-matchy, I do like the ruffled blouse with the fitted skirts (especially Paré’s combination).

alan Cumming red suitNow here’s how you wear a red suit and matching shoes, while we wouldn’t recommend this look for everyone, it suits Alan Cumming’s daring style. It’s a big contrast to the grey suit stylings of Eli Gold on The Good Wife and Cumming likes to have fun with fashion when he hits the red carpet. It’s a really well tailored suit and it fits him perfectly.

Mad Men Women Honored at the 2013 Crystal & Lucy Awards

13 Jun

Last night the women of Mad Men attended the 2013 Women in Film Crystal & Lucy Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and received the 2013 Lucy Award for Excellence in Television. January Jones, Elisabeth Moss, Jessica Paré and Kiernan Shipka collected the award on behalf of the show and this is Moss’ second award of the week as she received the Critics’ Choice Award for Top of the Lake.

Mad Men womenIt has been a big week for Kiernan Shipka’s character Sally Draper as she caught Don sleeping with Sylvia, Shipka showed once again what a remarkable actress she is as she reacted with horror, repulsion and disbelief at her father’s actions. While this season has been light on the Sally appearances this is surely going to leave its mark on Don and damage their relationship for the time being. Shipka once again looks age appropriate in a black star patterned dress and this is another red carpet hit for her.

It’s rare that we get to see all four of these women in a scene together (possibly the only time is in one of my favorite episodes, season four’s “The Beautiful Girls”) but all of them have being doing great work this year on Mad Men with January Jones being the big surprise as Betty has been a highlight rather than a hindrance.

When they took to the stage Elisabeth Moss said “Mad Men has taken an unintentional political stance by simply treating women like human beings.  Our show is a truly special and spirited place in Hollywood.”

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

7 Jun

There has been a couple of award shows this week with both the CFDA and Glamour magazine hosting glitzy affairs and the pre-Emmy nomination roundtables are in full swing. Some of these have already been covered here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and have featured some really fantastic looks. As always there are no real rules to this weekly feature and as always it is a snapshot of what I have been watching (and looking at online) and each pick is for a variety of reasons including; what it adds to the storyline, what it tells us about the characters involved or simply because it looks good.

Winner: Megan Draper on Mad Men “A Tale of Two Cities”

Megan hippie lookWhile the Megan Draper theories have gone from slightly crazy to Don Draper hallucinating crazy the costuming for Megan this season has shown why Janie Bryant is so revered. Megan’s closet is huge and it needs to be as she has alternates between glamorous fashion forward pieces to her more relaxed look at home that wouldn’t look out of place in 2013. In Don’s drug induced hallucination he sees Megan in hippie attire, which matches the general look of the Hollywood party they are attending. This is the most relaxed Megan has looked all season though it’s not really Megan, but Don’s projection of the perfect version of Megan; she has quit her job and she is pregnant. The thing that drew Don to Megan in the first place was how she was with his children and California is the place where he cemented their relationship from a casual fling to fiancé. They have recently discussed the state of their relationship and even though they seem better than they have been for the entire year there is still distance (and not just the physical kind) between them. Is Megan actually pregnant or is this just wishful thinking on Don’s part?

Runner Up: Adam Scott and Amy Poehler in The Greatest Event in Television History

adam scott hart to hartLast night Adult Swim aired Adam Scott’s second “Greatest Event in Television History” and this time he teamed up with Parks and Recreation co-star Amy Poehler to recreate the opening title sequence of Hart to Hart. Both look like they are having a ball with the late ’70s/early ’80s look and if I didn’t know any better I would think that this was a Ben and Leslie fantasy sequence – though that would probably involve either Game of Thrones or political faces throughout history.

Runner Up: Ellie Kemper at The Hollywood Reporter Supporting Actor Photo Shoot

Kemper

Ellie Kemper looked stunning at the CFDA Fashion Awards earlier this week and even though The Office has finished this doesn’t mean that this is the last we have seen of Kemper talking about her role on this show as she takes part in both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter’s Emmy discussions. Kemper talks about her experience coming onto The Office in season 5 when it was already a big hit and dealing with it finishing saying “the most emotional moment was when we filmed The Office finale. I was crying and crying, which is actually unusual for me.” I hadn’t watched The Office for two seasons but that final episode had me balling (one of these moments was when Joan Cusack revealed that she was Erin’s mother). As I said earlier in the week I really hope that Kemper gets to play roles beyond the standard girlfriend and funny best friend parts as she is a really terrific comedic actress.
