The Wish List: A Gift for Joan on Elementary – Breakfast and Couture

6 Feb

Sherlock tends to favor an abrupt awakening for Joan on Elementary, however when she stayed over at the Brownstone in this week’s episode “Hemlock” he went with a far more pleasant approach including breakfast in bed, a new pair of boots and a fantastic day dress.

Elementary Joan in bedThis definitely makes up for pointing out how little she feels for current beau Andrew and the fancy outfit she was wearing the previous night might not be the best for day detective work. Sherlock gets major points for this and as I mentioned on Twitter this looks like the point where shooting in New York got particularly cold as super warm (and stylish) coats, gloves and knitted hats are on display – my current winter hat of choice looks a lot like the one Joan is wearing below – are all part of Joan’s costuming so those boots are a must.

Elementary beanieI also like to think she is wearing something of Sherlock’s in bed even though I can’t imagine him with a ratty bed tee collection.

So what about the dress in question? Sherlock didn’t scrimp as the herringbone silk stripe dress is from Edun and sticks to Joan’s signature slightly oversized style; it makes sense with his observation skills that Sherlock would nail this clothing gift.

Elementary Joan dressWhile I am enjoying Joan and Sherlock living apart at the moment and how this has impacts their relationship dynamic allowing both of them to grow; if the treats of breakfast food and clothes were to be more than just a one off I can understand why Joan might want to move back in. Plus after what transpires at the end of “Hemlock” the Brownstone might be the safest place for Joan right now.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

5 Feb

Welcome to another edition of “Behind the Insta-Scenes” and this week we have show crossovers, some sunshine, Parks and Recreation flashbacks, production art and a hilarious Broad City video.

http://instagram.com/p/ynZ4QKgVC6/?modal=true

Another Flash/Arrow visit is in the pipeline and here’s Brandon Routh taking a visit to Star City for some suit assistance.

Ben Schwartz continues his Tuesday trip down Parks and Rec memory lane and this week he revisits the days of Entertainment 720. Woah those panda sneakers and major desk chair envy.

http://instagram.com/p/yp2ujJuqes/?modal=true

Kroll Show took a visit to a very familiar looking bar.

Niece Denise! A Kroll Show double this week as I can’t resist this much fringe.

http://instagram.com/p/ypycU4mRlu/?modal=true

Tracee Ellis Ross is torturing us with this glorious sunshine lunch break photo.

This is a very cool custom made prop from the set of Elementary.

Ilana is awesome on Broad City, but she is also a terrible person to share a desk with and her colleague Nicole is keeping track of everything. Press play to find out what Ilana has done this time.

The highlight from the latest Tonight Show lip sync battle would definitely please Abbi from Broad City.

So this is not from a set, but it is far too adorable to keep from these pages. Once again Diane Kruger wins at Instagram.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

24 Dec

A slightly earlier festive edition of “Behind the Insta-Scenes” and one that doesn’t stick to just photos from the set as a lot of shows finished for the holidays prior to this week’s rotation. There is still fun to be had and a lot of season’s greetings from various shows.

http://instagram.com/p/wxm7VupQ9E/?modal=true

Mindy Kaling’s custom Salvador Perez hot pink dress is a knockout and her Mindy Project date for the People Magazine Awards isn’t too shabby either.

Happy Holidays and photo booth frolics from Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu.

Billy Eichner stopped by The Soup and looks very cute in a Henley (Joel, your suit is also dashing). Get him on a CW show. Just think how much fun that would be.

http://instagram.com/p/w0Cn4wpG73/?modal=true

More set festive wishes and this time from a more fractured family with Stephen Amell hiding beneath the hood,

http://instagram.com/p/ww-W0wgVN3/?modal=true

A very cool atmospheric shot of Grant Gustin all suited up on The Flash.

Animal pictures and cast members who are friends IRL are two of the things I am a sucker for on Instagram and Looking’s Frankie J. Alvarez delivers on both as he thanks co-star Russell Tovey for letting him stay in London and gives the gift of Rocky (who is a big, super cute presence on Tovey’s account).

And here is delightful shot of the cast of Looking courtesy of season 2 newcomer Daniel Franzese.

Gillian Jacobs continues to be one of my favorite people. Plus the Christmas tree in the background rounds this post off nicely.

Happy Holidays from TV Ate My Wardrobe to all!

Best of TV Costuming 2014: The Year of the Leather Jacket

22 Dec

Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2014″ costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items that we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking, we want to look at this year’s TV through the prism of costume.

Clothing confession time – I have never owned a leather jacket; in fact I don’t think I have ever tried one on. Or anything made of leather aside from bags or shoes. It is one of those items (much like my fear of jumpsuits, which is a story for another day) that has always intimidated me because my style is more Sandy pre makeover than post (the leather jumpsuit in Grease is the perfect combination of my clothing fears). Leather jackets have been so ubiquitous on TV this year that Vulture compiled a slideshow of all the women who had worn them at the start of the fall season. We’re going back a little further and compiling a list of the Top 5 leather jacket wearers this year and maybe 2015 will be the year I try one on. I will probably settle for a leather pleated skirt.

In no particular order here are the women who make me want to wear leather and what is really great about this list is it covers sitcom, drama and genre shows. Leather is not bound by one type of storytelling.

The Good Wife 5.18 Kalinda and DianeKalinda Sharma wears several shades of leather on The Good Wife including this stunning collarless zipped peplum oxblood number (from episode 5.18 “All Tapped Out) and I’d say a good 93% of her wardrobe includes some form of leather. Even her dresses that aren’t all leather have leather accents.

Abbie leather jacketLeather jackets are to Abbie Mills’ attire as Ichabod’s trusty colonial coat (and his new replicas) is to his wardrobe on Sleepy Hollow. Abbie’s costuming is relatively fuss free; it is both practical and it is still classically stylish. There is also an air of authority when wearing this type of outerwear and gives the impression of someone who is not easily intimidated, which is why characters from law enforcement have a tendency to rock this look.

Diaz leather jacketSuch as Rosa Diaz from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It is a trope of sorts to have a character like Diaz in this attire and it is also used to distinguish her look from Amy Santiago’s softer, tailored wardrobe but the show has fun with what could become a cliche.

Kitty leather jacketOn Elementary, Kitty is wearing the same All Saints biker jacket as Diaz’s one from the shot above and while her character isn’t strictly a police officer she does work in this arena. Kitty’s attire is nothing like Joan’s for a reason; she is not simply a Joan carbon copy Sherlock is trying to recreate. Instead her penchant for leather (including her Doc Marten boots) is a way to project an image of strength after everything she has been through.

The Americans 2.13 Elizabeth leather jacketElizabeth doesn’t look all that thrilled by her coat choice considering the way her hands are stuffed into the pockets and the snow on the ground behind her. From the season 2 finale of The Americans Elizabeth is dressed in the way I think she is most comfortable in (aside from the weather) as she appears as herself and not in her mom attire or work clothes. This is spy Elizabeth. And what do we have here, but a new shot from the season 3 promo shoot revealing that leather comes in both his and hers:

Welcome once again to Behind the Insta-Scenes! Bringing you a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off) antics.

In the last edition we did something slightly different and basked in the brilliance of Diane Kruger; regular service resumes this week and we’ve got a whole bunch of photos from various shows. This includes festive decorations, birthday celebrations, future guest stars and a scary figure. Plus a few off set interactions that made us a little giddy.

“We are both clearly doing the Edith Piaf here.” Kat Dennings captures her last appearance on Craig Ferguson in style. I’m really going to miss his very special way of talk show hosting/interviewing.

http://instagram.com/p/wHVgDOgVCy/?modal=true

Spy Daddy! Yep feeling pretty excited about Victor Garber guest appearing on The Flash. A+ coat, sweater, shirt layering from both Gustin and Garber.

Happy Holidays from Comedy Central with Abbi and Ilana in festive sweater vests. The Broad City ladies dish out some helpful party tips in this very funny video and not only is season one now out on DVD, but the show is back in just over a month!

I saw Lyndie Greenwood’s photo before watching the Sleepy Hollow mid-season finale and wondered why Jenny would be carrying so much rope forgetting how much this show loves tree branches. Moloch would totally fit in over at Hannibal.

Birthday cake and another excellent Joan dress for Lucy Liu on Elementary.

http://instagram.com/p/v7UaOupQ12/?modal=true

An offset photo and one from over Thanksgiving. Scott Speedman playing ping pong with Ike Barinholtz. Good white shirt action.

http://instagram.com/p/wKNsMrP48n/?modal=true

A super close up on New Girl’s Max Greenfield pulling the Schmidtist of faces.

How to decorate your tree Orphan Black style with angel wings, trucker hats of beaus past, a doll that resembles a certain clone, mini portraits a la Felix’s creations and some all important DNA double helix strands.

http://instagram.com/p/wKPrDSnqnV/?modal=true

Another off set encounter, but I wasn’t going to leave off this adorable Stark sister reunion from the super smiley Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams. Very much digging Williams’ lipstick color too.

This week we have the Broad City ladies still on tour, a teen movie queen on The Mindy Project, final table reads, prison superheroes and other set observations.

Julia Stiles is guest starring on The Mindy Project as an old friend of Danny’s and a Morgan love interest. I hope she drops some Kat Stratford dance moves.

http://instagram.com/p/vR4DP7N6qu/?modal=true

Ilana and her big clear bag of thrown out bagels is one of many amazing visual Broad City first year moments and a fan made a bagel plushie, which is also all kinds of awesome. The new season is just two months away and I cannot wait.

Final table read time for season 2 of Looking and January is going to be an excellent TV month as this returns at the start of 2015. Look at how adorable these dudes are.

Ryan Hansen’s TBT is going back to season 3 of Burning Love and if you ignore Ken Marino’s drool then it becomes a rather lovely cast shot. June Diane Raphael to be cast in everything please.

There is also a video to accompany this Morello doing the whole superhero posing thing, as Yael Stone enjoys some downtime on set.

Doing the same but in a much more sedated manner are the New Girl cast and it is a screen checking party in this photo from Erin O’Malley.

Lucy Liu revealed the view from the Elementary greenroom when they were on a night shoot this week and that’s a whole lot of New York office blockage with the Chrysler Building making an appearance. It’s a very hypnotic shot.

http://instagram.com/p/vRY9MRjFrh/?modal=true

So many boxes all bearing the Greendale logo and this prop tease is courtesy of Gillian Jacobs.

Kroll Show is another January returnee (Wednesday 14 – the same night as Broad City!) and this brief glimpse is enough to send me down a PubLIZity YouTube rabbit hole.

Welcome once again to Behind the Insta-Scenes! A new feature offering a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off set) antics.

Halloween dress up from last week (Michael Sheen and Sarah Silverman are still my Halloween costume faves), heading out of town, baby animals and Christmas comes early when you’re shooting a TV show. Plus various other on set hijinks.

http://instagram.com/p/u6tNbRpXn3/?modal=true

I have no idea what Steven Pasquale is doing with his arms in this shot, but here is the Alicia Florrick campaign team including the very best body woman there is.

http://instagram.com/p/vAdrwdipek/?modal=true

Broad City Live is very much a thing I would want to see. For now here is a picture of Ilana on the tour bus and the second season has been given a premiere date – January 14. Happy New Year indeed!

It’s all smiles on the Elementary set between Sherlock’s former and current protege. Instantly loving the difference in style between Kitty and Joan.

More from Elementary as Indiana Jones, Melanie Daniels and Maverick all made an appearance for Halloween.

http://instagram.com/p/u9lCKXNMyi/?modal=true

Hannah Simone was on Conan this week and animal expert David Mizejewski appeared the same night; hence the super cute piglet. Simone’s expression and dress are both on point.

Another shot of Hannah Simone this time from New Girl makeup artist Jorjee Douglass showing Michelle DeMilt working with Simone during a bar scene (for New Girl makeup tips head here).

The Orange is the New Black ladies are prolific Instagram users and it makes me so happy when a group photo like this one is posted. Thanks Uzo Aduba!

It is only the Best Fucking News Team and after a trip to Austin last week, The Daily Show went live (as did The Colbert Report) for the midterm election results. Doing their best Queen album cover shot.

Christmas has come to The Mindy Project and this means super sparkly dresses are on the styling menu with Kaling wearing an original creation by costume designer Salvador Perez.

Amazing outfits, a returning show and on set affection are all included in this week’s round up of the best of Instagram.

Cat socks! Colton Haynes is giving good and appropriate mesmerized face to these sock beauties (as modeled by Felicity Smoak herself Emily Bett Rickards).

The dudes of Looking are making it hard to pick a side when it comes to the Patrick decision of Richie versus Kevin (okay Kevin already has a boyfriend, but it is still a hard choice). Here are Russell Tovey and Jonathan Groff being super adorable while filming season 2.

Ticking off the clones on the Orphan Black set and after an appearance by Alison last week, Cosima is popping up to say hello.

http://instagram.com/p/uqgFMxpQ3I/?modal=true

More Mindy outfit delights on The Mindy Project and this patterned delight is by Issa. Not a real rooftop.

http://instagram.com/p/uvM65_DvBr/

So this isn’t technically a TV set, nor is Taylor Swift necessarily a TV star (she did pop up on New Girl) but this week has been wall to wall Taylor thanks to the release of her new album 1989 (which I’ve been playing on repeat) and this Marco De Vincenzo pleated rainbow sparkly skirt is everything. Taylor’s is autumnal in tone and it is also available in purple hues.

http://instagram.com/p/usfoAyPaeN/?modal=true

A selfie for Selfie and this show has become one of my favorites from the new fall offerings; Karen Gillan is a big part of this. It is super charming and makes me laugh a bunch, but I fear the low ratings might make it go the way of the big cancellation disappointment from a show with a terrible name last season. I still miss you Trophy Wife.

Elementary returns tonight for season 3 and here is Jonny Lee Miller hanging around on set (I’ll get my coat).

Dressing Elementary’s Joan Watson with Spring 2015 London Fashion Week Collections

16 Sep

Fashion Week continues in London as more RTW Spring 2015 collections are unveiled and so it must be time for more Fantasy Costuming. Joan Watson on Elementary manages to look casual, stylish and professional all while putting up with Sherlock and whatever crime they are tasked with solving. Shift dresses, a-line skirts paired with tights, boots and an endless stream of incredible coats to protect against the New York City elements are all Joan staples; now she won’t have Sherlock throwing outfits at her when she wakes up as she’ll be in her own place.

Joan’s costuming tends to be on the white/grey/black scale, but it doesn’t mean this is a bold color free zone and Joan does wear color and especially print on many occasion. Hemlines tend to be short and so most of these choices reflect that and as always the Fantasy Costuming selections are inspired by the costume design from the show in question and are in no way suggesting this character should wear a specific item mentioned.

Topshop UniqueCasual cool from Topshop Unique with a mustard yellow coat, leather skirt and white sweater. Throw on some tights and boots and it’s Joan (as these are Spring collections replace all the sandals with the kind of footwear we typically see Joan in).

J. JS LeeFrom J. JS Lee here is the first of several shift dresses. Going to start with the more muted palette and work our way up to the bolder entries.

MCQMcQ Alexander McQueen; simple and effective.

Jasper ConranDropped waist, slightly longer and in navy from Jasper Conran.

Orla KielyHere comes the color; pink and textured from Orla Kiely. I’d like to think that is one big pocket, but alas it’s probably just seam detail.

MulberryColor and pattern with this Mulberry dress (plus an all nature backdrop). Love the slightly longer sleeves.

Paul CostelloeSo here is the color apex and I might have been swung by two of my favorite things – yellow and pockets – but the silhouette on this Paul Costelloe frock is all Joan.

Tom FordThis is more for Joan going on a date (and yes she will be getting a love interest in season 3) and Lucy Liu would look fantastic in this retro-futuristic Tom Ford.

SaloniPockets, patterns and texture from Saloni in another super cute casual frock for Joan.

Giles LFWWhen I think of peplum on TV I think of Alicia Florrick long before Joan Watson, but this Giles ensemble is far more Joan than Alicia playing with peplum, pockets and pattern in a funky manner.

Antipodium

A lighter looking coat (this is a Spring collection after all) and an all Joan outfit from Antipodium (as long as we ditch the sandals).

For more on Joan Watson’s costuming head here and here.

Elementary returns Thursday, October 30.

TimesTalks Panel with Maggie Gyllenhaal, Taylor Schilling, Lucy Liu and Mira Sorvino

25 Jul

The New York Times hosted a discussion with four women who are on current or forthcoming shows as part of the TimesTalks series; from network, cable to streaming and all with varying levels of experience in television and film. Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Honourable Woman), Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black), Lucy Liu (Elementary) and Mira Sorvino (Intruders) sat down to talk about a variety of subjects including why television is so good for actresses at the moment and how they navigate some of the more challenging aspects of working in this industry.

Times TalkTelevision as a medium is constantly being championed as an outlet for complex female roles and this is something that is a staple discussion point during any panel like this.* This is Maggie Gyllenhaal’s first foray into television and the character she plays in the Sundance/BBC co-production The Honourable Woman is not one you are likely to see in a mainstream movie; she is strong, intelligent and poised and like a lot of fascinating characters there is a flip side where this crumbles. Having seen the first four episodes I can attest that Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Nessa Stein is complicated and her performance so far has been exceptional.

*Keri Russell talks about this during the recent THR roundtable and her role in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes vs. The Americans is a pretty accurate example of why TV is viewed in this way over the more reductive roles that are generally on offer for women in film.

It’s not hard to see why Gyllenhaal took on a role like this and the beauty of TV is that there is so much more time to explore and dissect a character benefiting both performer and viewer. The idea that so many people watch TV as opposed to some of the tiny indie passion projects they have made gets referenced on multiple occasions.

Netflix is given praise for putting out a project like Orange is the New Black as it’s a show that has such strength in its diversity and the lack of restrictions on the content gives further creative freedom. This is a career high for Taylor Schilling (and when they were talking about film all I could think about was her cut down role as the wife in Argo) and her enthusiasm for this opportunity is obvious, particularly when previous work/heartbreak is brought up.

The manner in which these different shows are filmed varies from Maggie Gyllenhaal receiving all eight scripts at the start and shooting scenes for multiple episodes on the same day (all written and directed by Hugo Blick) to Lucy Liu’s episode by episode traditional network model with a variety of directors (including herself). TV can be many things including auteur like projects, adaptations of popular novels with both long and short form storytelling coming into play.

One thing that comes across from this panel (and at just over an hour and a half a lot of ground is covered) is that all four of these women have experienced some things they haven’t necessarily been comfortable with and they have had to learn how to say no when it hasn’t felt right to them. Mira Sorvino is thrilled to find out that she is not alone in having felt like and there is a lot of common ground despite the differences in how they started out/where they are now. Self belief and belief from others are both driving forces and the ability to remain hopeful is a repeated notion. As one audience member points out it is kind of like having a free therapy session and getting to hear some of these candid thoughts in a free flowing long discussion makes this panel essential viewing.

Maggie Gyllenhaal brings up how ideas of perfection in this industry are something she wishes could fall away a bit. The double standard is another aspect of this and she mentions that the scrutiny is far greater on woman than it is for men (from her experience of living with an actor). Lucy Liu also points out how easy it is to share projects with the technology we have, but she also wishes that people weren’t so quick to tear something apart.

This is just a brief taster of the subjects that are covered and both Maggie Gyllenhaal and Taylor Schilling talk about the current cultural relevance of their shows among other aspects that concern the broader and more personal aspects of their careers. You can currently watch the whole panel here.
