Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

11 Dec

Welcome once again to Behind the Insta-Scenes! Bringing you a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off) antics.

We’ve got an array of onset photos this week including a look at a future episode, which also happens to be flashing back to the past, award nomination celebrations, the final days shooting one show and creepy Santa.

Oh hey Michiel Huisman and your beardy goodness! Hanging out with Orphan Black creators John Fawcett and Graeme Manson in what looks to be Felix’s apartment.

Lee Pace is guest starring on The Mindy Project this season as an important person from her past and having watched the Christmas episode it now makes sense why they were shooting in San Francisco a few weeks ago.

Mindy Kaling also posted a few photos of what Mindy looked like in 2004 – bangs and blue contact lenses – when she first knew Alex. The caption explains it all.

New Girl went for a different kind of Santa this year for their super fun festive episode and I’m not sure I will ever be able to look at Saved by the Bell’s Mr Belding in the same way again.

It was SAG nomination day yesterday and the cast of Veep have a lot of SAG years between them. This also works as a reminder that I still need to catch up on this show.

With this coffee truck for the Community cast and crew, Gillian Jacobs agrees with Nathan Fillion’s sign.

The last Wine Wednesday on the Cougar Town set is an emotional one.

Included in the roundup this week are location shoots with swoony grins, superhero selfies and a mother/daughter reunion.

The Mindy Project is shooting in San Francisco this week and Mindy Kaling has been sharing treats aplenty – amazing costumes ahoy – including this very romantic selfie with co-star Chris Messina. This is a frame worthy photo for Mindy’s apartment.

Same gorgeous location, but switching things up with a moody catalogue model pose.

A lot gets up Eli’s nose on The Good Wife including this very cool accidental shot.

Last week The CW revealed what Katie Cassidy’s superhero costume would look like on Arrow and here’s a close up of the mask (along with co-star Colton Haynes). Two thumbs up for the lipstick and dramatic eye flicks.

Cougar Town is coming to an end and Busy Philipps pays tribute to hair stylist Michael Anton for all the crazy, fun hairstyles Laurie has had, including this very colorful ‘do.

So this isn’t from the Mad Men set – they are at the AMC Holiday Party – but I couldn’t resist this mother/daughter picture of happiness. As if Matthew Weiner would allow on set photos this far in advance of the final half of the season premiere.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

14 Nov

Happy Friday! Time to see the best looks of the week including magazine covers, huge red carpet events, the start of award season chatter and other stylish outings in this edition of “Out of the Box.”

out 100 Samira WileySamira Wiley covers the OUT100 20th anniversary issue (along with Zachary Quinto, Sam Smith and Ellen Page – her cover is also incredibly striking) and it is a breathtaking image. This is a beautiful and stunning shot of the OITNB star and I am in awe; definitely one of THE magazine covers of the year.

Elizabeth BanksMoving on to the red carpet dress of the week as Elizabeth Banks brings it once again on a Hunger Games press tour and this Elie Saab Couture gown made my draw drop when I first saw it (in fact I’m still pretty mesmerized now). Capey train goodness and a dress that is world premiere worthy.

Kerry WashingtonKerry Washington has worn some exquisite Oscar de la Renta gowns in the past and at the Baby2Baby Gala she chose this beautiful and ultra feminine floral frock. While I’m not always into the mullet hemline it works well here as it gives us a chance to see the bowed Christina Louboutin sandals.

Busy PhilippsGoing from one kind of floral gown to another at the Baby2Baby Gala and Busy Philipps is serving beaded goodness in this super pretty ensemble.

Jenny SlateAwards season is in the early stages and this means it is time for actors talking to other actors about actorly things – which if you’ve followed my roundtable discussion comments you know I am amped for this time of year. At the Variety Studio: Actors on Actors event Jenny Slate went for dressed up stylings in Marnie whereas Felicity Jones opted for simple chic in a Saint Laurent top and leather Coach skirt; both are fantastic even if they look like they might be attending different events.

gillian jacobsTory Burch celebrated a new watch collection from this brand with a Vogue soiree and a whole bunch of lovely ladies wearing (you guessed it) Tory Burch. Gillian Jacobs in a surprise move is in one of the only non-patterned looks in an LBD with an embellished neckline and waist. Perfect for anyone who wants to do the black dress thing with a slight twist.

Rashida JonesRashida Jones was also at the Tory Burch event, also in Tory Burch and I love the shape and print on this dress. Could definitely see Joan wearing this on Elementary. Red lipstick bonus points.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

Welcome once again to Behind the Insta-Scenes! A new feature offering a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off set) antics.

The inaugural Behind the Insta-Scenes post was an all comedy affair and we’ve mixed it up with a couple of shots from some more dramatic shows, plus a directorial debut and this week a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite joined Instagram which is cause for celebration.

Play guess The Good Wife plot from Alan Cumming’s shot of co-star Julianna Margulies wearing an apron and latex gloves while sitting on a tiny plastic chair.

http://instagram.com/p/t6qRY1jaXs/?modal=true

This one from Nicole Beharie seems more clear cut and I don’t think anyone will be too surprised to see snakes on Sleepy Hollow.

Diane Kruger is now on Instagram and she has already delivered on fashion, Pacey and amazing cat photos. The highlight so far is this photo from German themed party Kruger organised for The Bridge crew (oh hey FX please renew this show) after Germany won the World Cup. So adorable.

The second episode of A to Z is on tonight and Ben Feldman’s reminder concentrates on co-star Cristin Milioti; all I can focus on is her amazingly long eyelashes. While I thought the first episode was only okay, I am totally charmed by Feldman and Milioti even if the premise isn’t so promising and so I will definitely keep on watching.

Busy Philipps directed an episode of Cougar Town this week (including her own daughter in the scene above) and she did so in style wearing a vintage JC Penny ’50s dress.

Our weekly installment of Mindy Project set shenanigans has Mindy Kaling learning lines in an Equipment tartan sweatshirt that I really want in my own wardrobe now it is finally cold enough for sweaters.

Best of the 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards Red Carpet

3 Jun

The annual CFDA Fashion Awards were held at the Lincoln Center in New York yesterday (June 2) celebrating those who have made an outstanding contribution to American fashion. Actors, models and singers attended the event dressed in creations designed by the winners and nominees and here is a look at our favorites from this event.

Greta Gerwig and Zac PosenGreta Gerwig poses with designer Zac Posen in a stunning long sleeve tangerine dress by Zac Posen and while her How I Met Your Dad project is no more (and really Gerwig was the main reason I would have watched this show) I am very excited to see what is next for her. I hope this bad TV experience won’t put Gerwig off future television projects, though I expect network TV has been soured for now.

SolangeSolange looks super sexy in shimmery silver Calvin Klein Collection, which is giving off Old Hollywood vibes with a dash of ’70s disco. I am super into bright pink lip color at the moment and this pop of color gives this look a contemporary feel.

Coco RochaBringing the drama is Coco Rocha in a Christian Siriano gown (and posing with the designer and I’m momentarily mesmerized by his shoes). This is a stunning and elegant design and the embroidered monochrome skirt is enhanced by the off the shoulder sleeved black bodice. Add a cigarette holder and this has Audrey Hepburn flashes.

Liya KebedeWearing a white Wes Gordon shirt and a skirt that makes me think of chemistry class (I might be the only who sees this print and pictures atoms and molecules) in the best possible way is model Liya Kebede. This is one of those looks that is super stylish and effortless; it’s happens to be on the least showy end and yet it is also one of the standouts.

Busy PhilipsBusy Philipps looks stunning and statuesque in a red Honor halter dress complete with a custom Irene Neuwirth necklace – Neuwirth won for accessory design – and matching ring. The ruffled neck sets this dress apart from other red gowns like this that tend to go for a bow option (see Nicole Kidman and Emma Stone).

Brie Larson DVFI have loved this gold star print Diane von Furstenberg dress since I first saw it on the runway back in February (it sadly didn’t fit in with this Alana Bloom fantasy costuming piece) and I’m so glad to see how good Brie Larson looks in this frock.

Keri RussellWhile this might look a tad like a mint-green sheet has found its way onto this Rosie Assoulin gown, I really like this ethereal Grecian touch and it goes beyond just another plain monochrome getup. Keri Russell tends to stick with simple designs and this is still in her usual wheelhouse with an added embellishment and she’s pulling this look off.

Kim Kelly is My Friend: Costuming Repeats on Freaks and Geeks

8 Apr

There are high school shows like Gossip Girl which showcase an endless stream of different costumes each episode as characters barely repeat an outfit. The world of Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen is one where new clothes are at their disposal and part of Gossip Girl’s charm (which it did possess at one point) revolved around what these characters would be wearing each week. The characters on Freaks and Geeks are not interested in high fashion; one of the points of accuracy is the costuming repeats and despite the lack of McKinley High uniform certain clothes are worn daily.

With Lindsay and Kim it’s all about their coats; Lindsay changes her look and starts wearing her dad’s old army jacket, whereas Kim obtained her signature item with an elaborate price ticket scam (it only cost her $10). With all that effort it’s no wonder Kim wears it all of the time.

F&G ep 10 Kim and LindsayLindsay and Kim shouldn’t be friends on paper and it starts off in a hostile place as Kim thinks Lindsay is a phony. Lindsay’s drastic new look in the pilot – drastic only to those around her as we don’t get to see ‘old Lindsay’ until mid-way through the series – is part of that assumption.

F&G ep 11 Lindsay change of clothesHere’s snapshot of how Lindsay dressed pre-army jacket and existential crisis; a look she briefly returns to in “Looks and Books.”

Freaks and Geeks 1.01Kim is all about a blue jackets with stripes as you can see in this shot from the pilot and this is long before one of the great friendships of our time. Lindsay is already “dressing so weird” as Neal so delicately puts it.

F&G ep 14 Kim and LindsayDespite their very different backgrounds (showcased in the excellent and heartbreaking “Kim Kelly is my Friend“) and Lindsay’s position of privilege there’s very little that sets them apart in the wardrobe stakes. They both wear a variety of the standard jeans and t-shirt look; plaid shirts and awful shell chokers are thrown in for good measure.

What this is a celebration of Lindsay and Kim’s staple wardrobe pieces showing that character consistency in costume design is just as valuable as variety and in the gallery below you can see a snapshot of the evolution of this friendship and the faithful jackets that were there for each step of the way.

“The Conversation” and Busy Philipps on Body Image

24 Jul

It’s hard to escape the wall-to-wall news coverage surrounding the birth of the Royal baby and while this isn’t going to descend into an article about how the polka dot dress that Kate Middleton wore to unveil her son didn’t hide her post-labor bump, it has reminded me of an interview that Busy Philipps gave on the web series The Conversation a couple of months ago.

The Conversation is hosted by Amanda de Cadenet and the mission of this series and their website is “to explore, nurture and empower the modern woman, through interviews and topics ranging from: health and wellness, beauty, style, fitness, diet, parenting, sex, love, truth and wisdom, career and finance.” The interview with Busy Philipps is one that is particularly relevant this week as it highlights the unnatural expectations that are being heaped on women both famous and non-famous with the obsession that has grown regarding body image and post-pregnancy weight loss.

You don’t have to go far to see headlines about Kate Middleton’s “mummy tummy” with the same site posting photos of Busy Philipps (who recently gave birth to her second child) stating that she’s “embracing her new curves” and is in “no rush to slim down.” These comments might not appear to be all that venomous but there is an inherent value judgement, particularly as tabloids love to do “My Body after Baby” spreads – something that Philipps mentions in her Conversation episode.

It’s not just post-pregnancy ideals that Philipps discusses as she also talks about a time in her mid-20s when she was asked to lose weight for a pilot and how body image could be considered the “last frontier of feminism.” In a recent behind the scenes look at how The Conversation is made de Cadenet explains that this series believes it is “important to be honest because otherwise we are comparing ourselves to unrealistic lives.” This topic is covered in the Busy Philipps edition and it is important to untangle ourselves from these unrealistic expectations that some publications peddle to us on a daily basis.

There is a reason why the Freaks and Geeks episode “Kim Kelly is my Friend” is one of my favorite episodes of TV and a lot of that is to do with Busy Philipps’ performance; the candid nature of this character is something that appears to be shared with the person who plays Kim.
