Sleepy Hollow and Skinny Jeans

14 Jan

It happened! The Sleepy Hollow 21st-century makeover scene has occurred and it involves skinny jeans. In the Best of 2013 series I wrote about why Ichabod’s revolutionary styling was so integral to his character and “Vessel” gave a glimpse of Ichabod in modern dress while reinforcing his desire to hold onto the clothes of his past. Ichabod doesn’t understand Abbie’s obsession with his finery, nor is he too happy with her choice of pants “One sign of the impending apocalypse is surely skinny jeans” – on that note I totally feel you Ichabod.

Playing a scene like this with Abbie and Ichabod’s natural sounding banter while addressing audience questions is the right level of winking acknowledgement and it means we finally get to see what Ichabod looks like in modern dress. In terms of color and style it’s very similar to what he already wears, everything is just a little tighter.

Sleepy Hollow Ichabod makeoverThe navy button down might not be too much of a stretch and while I would love to see him in the stripy sweater Abbie is holding, it is a step too far and Ichabod reverts back to his regular threads.

Now this has been dealt with, the only other clothing matter is how clean they are and the suggestion of dry cleaning is offered, even if Ichabod doesn’t know what that is. This should be the end of the nitpicks surrounding Ichabod’s wardrobe and the playful nature of this scene while also discussing the threat at hand is part of the Sleepy Hollow charm. If nothing else there will always be gifs of that one time Ichabod Crane wore skinny jeans.

2014 Golden Globes: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s Winning Style

13 Jan

Another awards with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the helm, in which they were sadly largely absent during the middle and where they pushed the envelope in a way that Ricky Gervais never could “And now, like a supermodel’s vagina, let’s all give a warm welcome to Leonardo DiCaprio.” There were a couple of moments that didn’t work in the opening monologue – the Captain Phillips gags are super questionable – but overall they did what we all hoped they would do and made us laugh a lot. Plus Amy Poehler finally won an award! This pretty much made my evening.

Amy and Tina red carpetFirst up the red carpet and Amy’s gone for Stella McCartney that turns the simple black gown on its head with asymmetric detail. This might be the best her hair has ever looked and that wry smile suggests that she knows this. Tina Fey has opted for a vibrant floral printed Carolina Herrera frock and voluminous hair and it’s only going to get bigger.

Amy and TinaThe pair pretty much wore the same colors from the opening monologue last year with Tina going for oxblood this time around – the beading on this dress is exquisite.

Tina and Amy drinkng Golden GlobesAnother change and updos and strapless dresses for both. By this point it was probably needed as the show had descended into rambling speech chaos. That’s the beauty of the Golden Globes – alcohol on the tables. Some nice shade throwing in Taylor Swift’s direction from Tina Fey as she congratulated Amy Poehler with “I just want to say congratulations again to my friend Amy Poehler, I love you and there’s a special place in hell for you.”

Amy Poehler winWhile we’re on the subject of Amy Poehler winning, here is that moment and I’m pretty sure it’s the happiest I’ve ever seen my Twitter feed on an awards night. It’s been a long time coming.

Watch Amy Poehler’s speech below.

Best of the 2014 Golden Globes Red Carpet

13 Jan

So the Golden Globes are over and Tina Fey summed it up best with this closing comment “This was the beautiful mess we hoped it would be.” Random winners and drunken speeches aside we’re going to take a look at our favorite red carpet looks from the TV ladies – and one movie star we can’t leave out. Here are TV Ate My Wardrobe’s top 10 picks for best gowns. There’s a special Tina Fey and Amy Poehler style post coming shortly.

Julianna MarguliesJulianna Margulies didn’t win for The Good Wife, but she looks incredible in this black Andrew Gn gown with a gold shoulder and hem print. The voluminous skirt and cinched in waist is dramatic without going full princess.

Elisabeth Moss Golden Globes

So happy Elisabeth Moss won for Top of the Lake and she did so in this stunning oxblood and black beaded J. Mendel dress. While there were mumblings that her hair is too messy for this event, the tousled chic works for me thanks to the shorter length. Bonus points for a bold lip color choice. Moss became my mani cam hero when she did what many have probably wanted to do and flipped it off.

Tatiana Maslany Golden GlobesLooking completely different from the many roles we see her in on Orphan Black, Tatiana Maslany’s award show debut is a style win in this beautifully beaded gown from Jenny Packham that exudes old Hollywood glamour.

Caitlin Fitzgerald Golden Globes

Masters of Sex’s Caitlin Fitzgerald balked at the usual nude/red/black trend with a high necked beautiful baby blue gown from Emilia Wickstead. This is how you emulate the decade your show is set in without looking like you’ve raided the costume department as it has 1950s sensibilities with a modern twist. I’m in love with the coral and baby blue strappy pumps also from Emilia Wickstead.

Lizzy Caplan Golden GlobesSpace played an important thematic role on Masters of Sex and there’s something retro-futuristic about Lizzy Caplan’s Emilio Pucci frock. The silver side column and neckline detail is super sexy as is switching up her usually straight hair for wavy locks.

Lupita Nyong'oLupita Nyong’o was one of the most anticipated red carpet arrivals, especially as what she was wearing leaked early and she didn’t disappoint. I’m a sucker for a cape at the best of times (six seasons and a movie) and this red Ralph Lauren number is spectacular. Shame she didn’t win for her performance in 12 Years a Slave.

Michelle Dockery Golden GlobesYesterday we heralded Michelle Dockery as the best dressed at the pre-Golden Globes celebrations and she didn’t use up all her good style points before the big event. Metallic nudes were a big trend with several Oscar de la Renta gowns reveling in this sparkly style. While I might have added a few accessories there is beauty in simplicity and this is another hit for the Downton Abbey star.

Zosia MametThis white Reem Acra gown with black floral detail is a big departure for Girls’ Zosia Mamet as she tends to favor the LBD (as we saw earlier this week) and the new bob is super cute. All she needs is red lipstick and this would be perfect.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Like Paul Rudd, Julia Louis-Dreyfus has made some kind of deal/has a painting in her attic and she looks incredible in this orange Narciso Rodriguez halter neck dress. She also provided some of the funniest moments from the night, most notably puffing on E cigarette as part of the opening monologue.

Olivia WildeRed carpet gowns and maternity wear don’t tend to cross paths; Olivia Wilde’s sparkly Gucci Première emerald gown is giving me Wizard of Oz feels and it’s wonderfully unexpected.

Who was your best dressed?

Pre Golden Globes Best Dressed – Michelle Dockery

12 Jan

Happy Golden Globes Day! Or what TV Ate My Wardrobe likes to refer to as Happy Amy and Tina Day! Award season is in full swing which means plenty of pre-Globes parties and so many outfits to pour over. Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery has been doing the rounds and she’s not sticking to one style, color or pattern choice. For this reason we’re naming her the pre-Golden Globes best dressed (a highly coveted title) and we can’t wait to see what she’ll be wearing later today.

Yellow and orange tones can be hard to pull off and throwing black into the mix could end up with bumble bee comparisons. Not so with this Barbara Casasola ensemble and there’s nothing stiff upper lip looking about this gown.

On the same day, Michelle Dockery hit the Audi sponsored Golden Globes celebration in an equally vibrant outfit. This time opting for bold contrasting tartan in Altuzarra. The yellow Christian Louboutin pumps could be a step too far but thanks to understated hair and makeup it complements rather than clashes.

Toning it down for yesterday’s DuJour magazine cover party (celebrating Lupita Nyong’o – another person who is high on our most anticipated list tonight) in a Moshino jumpsuit. Now, jumpsuits tend to send me running for the hills and yet I’m drawn to this one; the wide leg, button down, Peter Pan collar combo all factor into why this is a terrific outfit. The pop of lip color and relaxed tousled hair sets it apart from the previously two outfits and shows Dockery’s playful side.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

10 Jan

Out of the Box is glad to have several shows back this week and to celebrate we’re taking a red carpet break before this weekend’s Golden Globes to focus on the looks that stood out on TV. The People’s Choice Awards were pretty uninspiring and one of the only notable outfits was Anna Faris’ Golden Girls like ensemble (I mean this as a compliment), everything else was pretty shoulder shrug and it’s clear that all the top shelf gowns have been reserved for this weekend. So let’s turn to TV; we’ve got a couple of dresses, a fur and leopard print combo, plus an exquisite shot from the new season of The Bridge (the Scandinavian version).

Donna LaDonna The Carrie DiariesIt’s a travesty that Donna LaDonna hasn’t appeared in the spotlight on these pages as she is pretty much The Carrie Diaries fashion MVP. Everything she wears is over the top, but this is the ’80s and we don’t need to see a refrained mean girl. Donna is more than just the cliché queen bee and she instantly makes any scene better. On last Friday’s episode she gave Dorrit some bad advice and yet she more than made up for it by challenging Mouse to beer pong, followed by some drunken spooning. These two characters are my everything (actually I might need to add Walt and Bennett to this list). Donna’s party outfit is made up of a Topshop faux-fur bomber jacket and leopard print dress because of course. Don’t ever change Donna and don’t leave me show.

NG_311-5_0312Jess Day wears super cute dress, not a shocker I know but I’m easing into 2014 and the Kate Spade nautical inspired look on this week’s New Girl is delightful. The tray of frogs is obscuring the oversized belted midsection that cinches the dress in at the waist and the red, white and blue is giving off some springtime feels (considering I’m writing this with a glove on it’s nice to pretend it’s warmer than it is).

Leslie and Ben ParisHappy 100th episode to Parks and Recreation and while they were over in London shooting the season 6 premiere they hopped across the Channel to Paris to film scenes for this milestone episode. Ben and Leslie are doing the whole tourist thing so a selfie in front of the Arc de Triomphe is forgivable (who am I kidding my Instagram is full of these kinds of shots, sadly not in Paris). Leslie’s mesh patchwork dress from M Missoni uses pattern and color to create an interesting visual; if she wore this in Pawnee it might look out of place, for Paris it is perfect.

Saga Broen On The Bridge Saga Norén favors leather pants and while they might not be the most practical for clambering aboard a vessel, they are as much a part of her as her US counterpart Sonya with her leather jacket. The second season of The Bridge started on BBC4 this week; this stunning shot showcases one of the protagonists and the endless seeming bridge that joins Sweden and Denmark and that gives the show its name. Yes I’ve added Saga’s coat to the covet list. You will be able to watch season 1 of The Bridge on Hulu from January 14 and even if you’ve already watched the FX version it’s worth checking out for the central pairing alone.

The Americans Season 2 Teaser: The Threat From Within

9 Jan

FX has released a series of teasers for new season of The Americans including this one which somehow got missed over the holiday season and while some are purposely ambiguous focusing on the US/USSR covert war, this one shows the danger could be coming from inside the Jennings’ house.

Henry rainbow coatNo it’s not suddenly turned into a slasher movie, instead it looks like Paige will continue to be suspicious of her parents late night activities and to be honest we’re surprised this didn’t happen sooner. Season 1 primarily dealt with the notion of trust between Elizabeth and Philip, hitting a variety of stumbling blocks. Now they have their daughter to contend with and as you can see in the promo they question if this is the first time Paige has snooped on them.

What about Henry? As the youngest he seems pretty oblivious at the moment, he did demonstrate some nifty defense skills with the guy they hitched with, but at the moment it’s only Paige who is wondering what their parents are up to. So far these kids haven’t been an annoyance; let’s hope this continues with the new season. Henry’s multicolored jacket is one of my favorite pieces of costuming from last year on this show.

Also featured in this teaser; wigs, sex, patterned shirts and turtlenecks.

The Americans returns Wednesday, February 26.

The Wish List: The Mindy Project and Three J NYC

9 Jan

On this week’s Trophy Wife Malin Akerman’s character Kate has a mini meltdown about being too comfortable and how she loves pajama pants. It’s ok as TV Ate My Wardrobe spends quite a lot of time in pajamas, taking the Jessica Day approach to bed wear and over on The Mindy Project they showcased what might be my new favorite pajama company Three J NYC. This means it’s time for the first wish list of 2014.

Mindy 3 j nyc pajamasInstantly won over by the polka dot factor and this is a big shock I know. It’s probably a tad too cold to be opting for shorts and ditching long sleeves, so we’ll be saving this style of pjs until the spring. Mindy favors clothes from the ‘super cute’ category and this is no exception, I also think there is something sexy about this kind of bed attire even when it isn’t being modeled in a Victoria’s Secrets buttons open way (really who does that?).

A whole host of styles and patterns are available on the Three J NYC site (as well as some limited stock at Neiman Marcus) including the Eloise White Dot Mindy is wearing in “Danny C is my Personal Trainer.” Spending just over $100 is a big investment for something the outside world is unlikely to see and it’s the perfect excuse to spend more time in pajamas. They’ve also got some good options on sale including this set adorned with bicycles and I am super tempted.

While I’m on the subject of The Mindy Project I just wanted to mention how much I have enjoyed the last few episodes as my relationship with this show has been patchy. It’s a shame then that it will be taking a break after the January 28 episode as it has definitely found its rhythm. At the start of the season, I was firmly on the fence with the Mindy/Danny romance story and now I’ve jumped fully into the shipper zone after the Aaliyah dancing and workout montage. If I wasn’t already there then Danny’s speech telling Mindy “You’re a woman and that’s good. Look like a woman” would have been the deciding factor.

After the Elle cover chat it was kismet that this episode discussed body confidence and it’s a topic most shows wouldn’t cover in this manner. Plus Danny joins ranks with Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz with his thoughts on pubes “Just grow it out. No one wants a 9-year-old.” I already read my first major think piece on this trend in UK Elle yesterday, who knew this would be such a hot topic for 2014?!

The costuming this season has been on top form and so expect a lot more Mindy wish lists before the show goes on hiatus.

The event will take place on Saturday, February 22 and some of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s most talked about shows have been nominated. They are split into three categories and this means that period and contemporary costuming doesn’t go up against each other. As is the general rule with awards nominations there are some shows that I think deserved recognition and are absent, particularly first season standouts like Masters of Sex, HannibalThe Americans, The Bridge and Sleepy Hollow.

New Girl 3.11 Review: “How do you Know When You’re on the Right Path?”

8 Jan

At the start of the last season of New Girl Jess was made redundant and it put her in a tailspin as teaching was the only thing she ever wanted to do. In “Clavado En Un Bar” she’s set up with another work dilemma as she’s offered a non-teaching job and has a very short amount of time to make a potentially life changing decision. Jess turns to the guys for help by asking them about their own career choices and as with “Virgins” the answers are varied and Winston learns something unsettling that once again destroys his belief system. “Are we all just living inside the mind of a giant?”

NG_311-30thru36_0351The school Jess is working at is pretty much a disaster and this makes this makes her seriously consider the prospect of another career working as a fundraiser for a children’s museum – she has been volunteering but Nick has neglected to tell anyone, nicely worked in there New Girl writers. Giving this thing a time limit of 21 minutes means I will now have So Solid Crew stuck in my head all day and it also gives the whole thing a frantic quality aided by Coach and his stopwatch. It’s a very self contained episode and in doing this it’s further alleviates the disconnected feeling from earlier this season. What this episode is doing is reminding Jess why she wanted to be a teacher in the first place even if her students end up using their maths skills for criminal purposes and the school she is works at is falling apart. The seed is planted for further progression in this line of work as it becomes clear that her organization skills are an asset that could lead to becoming a principal one day.

Cece arrives late in the story and it’s her contribution that allows Jess to go with her gut feeling, or the call from inside the house as Coach might put it and she sticks with teaching. Having Cece suggest that she was actually Jess’ first student could have tipped into total cheese territory, however it is the story of how Cece and Jess became friends and it’s adorable without being saccharine. The flashback shows how young Jess didn’t recoil when Cece mentions her dad has died; not because she is uncaring, but she’s at an age where she can give an honest and non-awkward reaction. The kids playing Cece and Jess are terrific and the instant bond is easy to read, even if they can’t without their glasses on.

Working Cece into the story has been a challenge at times, particularly when they focus on her romantic entanglements and the end of this episode suggests they will explore her professional woes. Cece mentions her age and how her jobs are becoming less glamorous and while I’m not sure the bar tending gig is something they will use beyond this week, they should definitely continue to address what’s next for Cece beyond who she is dating. The Jess/Cece friendship is also something that has been dialed back this season, in the most part due to the Schmidt shenanigans and this has been disappointing. Thankfully they’ve resolved some of the Cece/Schmidt tension and this means she can be a part of the group scenes without it coming across as forced. With the addition of Coach for the rest of the season, Cece needs to be more than just a sometimes character as otherwise it’s just Jess and four dudes.

Winston gets to play a bigger role in this episode as he becomes the cautionary tale when he realizes he’s never made a decision about his own career; he was given a basketball when he was born and his career ended through injury not choice. Winston quits his job as his first major work related decision and it’s time to further explore this “crazy English muffin we call Winston’s life.” This has been the season of Winston’s less than stable side and at this moment he’s switched positions with Nick as the content/wise member of the loft. That’s the thing with New Girl is that at no one time do all of these characters have their shit together and I don’t think I would want to watch the version where they do. Exploring both Cece and Winston further does sound like something I want to see. The same goes for Coach and at the moment he is still on the periphery, even if we now know that his name before Coach was Ernie.

The worthiness of Nick Miller is a topic TV Ate My Wardrobe has addressed on multiple occasions as he’s the one character on New Girl who has the shakiest self-belief. Not so in season 3 and this is the most stable I think he’s ever been. Is it the Jess factor that has made bar tending not seem all that bad? Perhaps, but being a lawyer is not what Nick really wanted to end up as (something about cock fighting and Mexico from season 1). The bar has been used as the ultimate career procrastination for Nick in the past and while he is gently mocked by Schmidt, I’m glad this didn’t turn into a Nick is sad about his life episode. Instead he’s content and this is character progression I’m happy to see. Plus we got to see him looking all preppy in a yellow polo and two more hairstyles in the amazing long list of college looks for Nick. He’s had more wigs than The Americans, ok maybe not quite that many. Like Schmidt, I love the scarf. As for the sports movie debate I haven’t seen A League of Their Own (I know), but I suspect that Jess and Cece are right.

Of course Schmidt had a signed Lance Armstrong yellow Tour de France jersey and it’s one of my favorite visual gags from the episode. Schmidt’s path to marketing comes thanks to following the advice of some terrible people and it’s no surprise that all of his efforts have been motivated by money and women. Like Nick, Schmidt is happy with his chosen profession and yet he does take a trip down memory lane in the tag selling Christmas trees. I can’t be the only one who was hoping to see Winston burning some bridges at the radio station after his description of what went down in this final scene. Will Schmidt progress beyond being fulfilled by things? They’ve touched on his emptiness before and it’s notable that the whiskey word association game in the opening ended with him being mournful about fathers. Is it time to meet Schmidt’s parents?

Progression is important whether it’s through relationships or professional choices and we saw some of this on New Girl this week. Season 3 still hasn’t clicked in the electrifying manner as last year, but this episode is a good start to 2014. Even if Jess’ super short flashback bangs transported me back to being 15 and having my very own DIY bang disaster. Pro Tip – don’t get a friend to cut your bangs when your hair is wet, unless you intend for them to be a centimeter long.

Girls Season 3 Premiere Red Carpet

7 Jan

It’s a big week for the cast of Girls as they promote their third season which airs this Sunday and on the same night they will be heading to the Golden Globes as both the show and Lena Dunham have been nominated. There are multiple magazine covers for Allison Williams (including Elle), chat show appearances and the red carpet of their big premiere event. While Jemima Kirke tends to avoid most of the media hoopla she joined castmates Lena Dunham, Allison Williams and Zosia Mamet at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York last night.

Girls Season 3 premiereLet’s break down the looks.

Jemima Kirke’s boho styling has been injected with some old school Hollywood glamour and this satin champagne coloured gown is giving me Courtney Love flashbacks. The tagline for season 3 is “Happily Whatever After” and Lena Dunham’s silver crystal embroidered Rochas Spring 2014 frock is giving off sparkly princess vibes. Dunham’s smoky eyes and slick hairstyle stops it from entering sickly, treacly territory. There is always something slightly awkward about Lena Dunham on the red carpet and while the cut of the dress isn’t perfect, it’s also one of the best outfit choices we’ve seen on her so far.

Moving on from the long to the short dresses and after stepping out of her comfort zone Allison Williams is looking positively Allison Williams in this super cute baby blue Dior; the floral appliqués detail on the bodice is really beautiful touch. As with the Girls poster, there’s a different interpretation of the pretty dress theme and Williams is the most conventional of the group. Shoshanna tends to favor pink, but Zosia Mamet is all about the LBD and who wouldn’t be when it’s Saint Laurent?! While there’s nothing particularly innovative to yell about with this choice, the gold shoes and bracelets are the perfect extras to turn an eh outfit into a winner.
