The Wish List: The Mindy Project and Three J NYC

9 Jan

On this week’s Trophy Wife Malin Akerman’s character Kate has a mini meltdown about being too comfortable and how she loves pajama pants. It’s ok as TV Ate My Wardrobe spends quite a lot of time in pajamas, taking the Jessica Day approach to bed wear and over on The Mindy Project they showcased what might be my new favorite pajama company Three J NYC. This means it’s time for the first wish list of 2014.

Mindy 3 j nyc pajamasInstantly won over by the polka dot factor and this is a big shock I know. It’s probably a tad too cold to be opting for shorts and ditching long sleeves, so we’ll be saving this style of pjs until the spring. Mindy favors clothes from the ‘super cute’ category and this is no exception, I also think there is something sexy about this kind of bed attire even when it isn’t being modeled in a Victoria’s Secrets buttons open way (really who does that?).

A whole host of styles and patterns are available on the Three J NYC site (as well as some limited stock at Neiman Marcus) including the Eloise White Dot Mindy is wearing in “Danny C is my Personal Trainer.” Spending just over $100 is a big investment for something the outside world is unlikely to see and it’s the perfect excuse to spend more time in pajamas. They’ve also got some good options on sale including this set adorned with bicycles and I am super tempted.

While I’m on the subject of The Mindy Project I just wanted to mention how much I have enjoyed the last few episodes as my relationship with this show has been patchy. It’s a shame then that it will be taking a break after the January 28 episode as it has definitely found its rhythm. At the start of the season, I was firmly on the fence with the Mindy/Danny romance story and now I’ve jumped fully into the shipper zone after the Aaliyah dancing and workout montage. If I wasn’t already there then Danny’s speech telling Mindy “You’re a woman and that’s good. Look like a woman” would have been the deciding factor.

After the Elle cover chat it was kismet that this episode discussed body confidence and it’s a topic most shows wouldn’t cover in this manner. Plus Danny joins ranks with Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz with his thoughts on pubes “Just grow it out. No one wants a 9-year-old.” I already read my first major think piece on this trend in UK Elle yesterday, who knew this would be such a hot topic for 2014?!

The costuming this season has been on top form and so expect a lot more Mindy wish lists before the show goes on hiatus.

The Wish List: The Mindy Project’s “Christmas Party Sex Trap”

4 Dec

Bold color and pattern are very much part of The Mindy Project costuming and this week’s festive outing is the perfect time for a Mindy wish list. Mindy doesn’t disappoint on this big holiday occasion with her sartorial choices and she is yet to meet a sparkly dress that she doesn’t like. It’s also time to add to the TV Ate My Wardrobe burgeoning coat covet list.

Mindy purple plaidPlaid is always a winner and C. Wonder’s purple wool toggle coat is a fun twist on this pattern and is perfectly Mindy. Sadly it is no longer available but I’ll be keeping an eye out for it on eBay.

Mindy houndstoothIt’s a double coat winner for Mindy this week and Theory’s ‘Danvey’ houndstooth coat rivals the dogstooth beauty on the last episode of Scandal; everything in a tooth pattern is an instant draw at the moment. It also happens to be more than half off and it also comes in camel tones if you want to switch up from the traditional monochrome. Mindy’s outerwear has been pretty exceptional this season including this recent entry on our Look of the Week list. Both the above and below photos give me many conflicted Danny/Mindy feelings; a ‘will they/won’t they’ who I like as friends first, but their chemistry is undeniable.

Mindy Project Christmas Party Sex TrapMindy’s holiday party dress is slightly more demure than I expected – not that she has to be full on sparkles and color all of the time – and it’s a beautiful peacock blue L. K. Bennett cocktail dress with a rhinestone embellished top. So yes, there is a sophisticated glittery element to it.

Mindy ProjectLike Mindy, Betsy doesn’t shy away from patterns and color and this red, white and blue bubble retro looking blouse from ModCloth is a perfect example of that. As with the C. Wonder plaid coat this is no longer available to purchase so we’ll have to keep our eBay searching eyes peeled.

Earlier today, I suggested TV character paper dolls that you can switch clothing between and I would love to see Mindy Lahiri trying out Carrie Mathison’s Theory look and vice versa.

In non wish list news here is a bonus gif gift of Danny’s Aaliyah dance. Enjoy!

The Wish List: Bright and Bold Sweaters

26 Nov

It’s pretty much December and so we are well and truly into sweater season. While not an official season it is my personal favorite and if you want to add to your collection here are some of the best examples of bold designs that have recently appeared on TV. Striped sweaters are a weakness of mine, but I wanted to go beyond the standard Jess from New Girl options.

Whack-A-MoleOn the most recent episode of The Good Wife, Robyn wore a Fairlee Colorblock wool Diane von Furstenberg sweater (this item is currently on sale) in what is referred to as ‘Fetish Pink.’ The pink and orange clash, but it’s a combination that works thanks to the charcoal grey block in the middle. Robyn’s costuming is wildly different from Kalinda’s leather look and from the sharp tailoring of everyone else at Florrick/Agos. Bold colors are part of the Robyn styling and this helps disarm those she is investigating. It also means that people she works with might not take her too seriously which is why she has been working extra hard to save her job.

April owl sweaterThe costuming of April Ludgate influenced my decision to start TV Ate My Wardrobe as each episode pretty much had me stating that I wanted to own something she was wearing. April’s clothes tend to be a lot more colorful than you might expect from a character who professes that she hates most things. One thing April doesn’t hate is animals so the owl is rather apt and this jacquard sweater by Isabel Marant is high on my wish list (sadly it is currently sold out).

Gina Brookly nine nineMoving on to something more affordable and Gina’s French Connection horse sweater from episode 3 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine is on sale at the moment. Gina’s wardrobe choices are a bit more free and loose over the other female characters on this show because she’s the only non-cop and this monochromatic equine number is delightful.

Dorrit the carrie diariesAh the slogan sweater and while this Forever 21 “Thanks for Nothing” emblem isn’t really something I can see myself wearing now, it’s got the right amount of teen angst for a character like Dorrit on The Carrie Diaries. This show might be set in the ’80s but a lot of the clothes are contemporary and come from stores that teenagers both shop at and can afford.

The Wish List: Jess from New Girl’s Pea Coat

14 Nov

A lot of the things you will find on the TV Ate My Wardrobe wish list are coat related and as the temperatures are starting to drop dramatically it’s time to dig out the thicker outerwear. Today was the first day that my pea coat has come out of my wardrobe since the spring and while this denim number is still doing the trick (thanks to the super warm borg lining) it’s time to get serious with winter coats (not too serious though, that’s what December and January are for).

Many shows give us coat envy here at TV Ate My Wardrobe with Scandal being top of this list (when it comes to jackets and blazers that’s all The Good Wife) and Masters of Sex has been doing a good job of competing for this title. When you can’t afford Burberry, Armani or find the perfect vintage number then shows like New Girl might have a reasonable (ish) price alternative. When it comes to coat buying I’d rather spend a bit extra for something that will actually keep me warm and the great thing about a quality coat is that it will last for years (I just realized that I sound like my mother).

So the pea coat and on this week’s episode of New Girl Jess wore a traditional navy colored pea coat that is available from J. Crew. Pea coats were originally worn by sailors and typically have broad lapels and double-breasted fronts; it’s a timeless design that suits both women and men (see Joshua Jackson on Fringe). It’s super flattering as it cinches in at the waist and sits nicely on your hips. This one from J. Crew has a rather grand name; “Majesty” and old-school stadium blankets have inspired the fabric choice. It sounds super warm and that’s a key element to a really good pea coat and anything that was originally intended to be worn at sea is probably a good winter option.

Majesty Peacoat

There are more colors available than just the traditional navy like Jess is wearing on New Girl and this is perfect if you want to brighten your coat collection while also opting for a classic look. This version in gold is probably my favorite because anything with a vaguely mustard hue is generally my first pick.

Lydia’s “Breaking Bad” Blue Coat

24 Sep

Breaking Bad isn’t a show that I turn to for fashion ideas; a yellow hazmat suit is hard to pull off in everyday life. This isn’t to say that costuming and the colors these characters wear isn’t important and something like the Heisenberg pork pie hat is an integral part of the Heisenberg/Walter White persona divide.

A few weeks ago I wrote about Lydia’s blue coat and Lydia’s wardrobe is the most high-end of these characters. No one would suspect that a woman who dresses in designer labels is part of a global crystal meth operation – the same can be said for Walt and his unassuming look. Lydia always looks incredibly out of place when she has to deal with the folks who are running the ground operation and her skittishness adds to this vulnerability. This was abundantly clear when she used Uncle Jack and his crew to dispatch the substandard meth making team she had employed since Walt has retired.

Breaking Bad and Lydia's blue coat

Fancy office wear is not really appropriate for the desert, drug related massacres or meth labs. Lydia’s appearance could be one of the reasons why Todd is so drawn to her; she looks nothing like the people he is used to dealing with and so far we have seen him act protectively towards her. Jesse Plemons spoke to Vulture about Todd’s Lydia attraction and he thinks that Todd “might have some mom issues. It makes sense. She needs him and he’s misinterpreting that a little bit.” This is the polite way of saying that Todd is developing a Lydia obsession and I wouldn’t want to be the person to get in the way of Todd and his crush.

When Todd met up with Lydia in the most recent episode he ditched the scruffy look and went for a smart pale button-down shirt – nothing says I love you like a clean, ironed shirt. This is his way of signalling to her that he can help run a successful venture and he’s essentially wearing his best clothes to impress her and mirror what she wears. It also helps reinforce the success that Todd has had with manufacturing meth that is of Heisenberg quality and color.

Back to the blue coat in the photo above and I have found a similar looking cobalt blue double breasted wool coat from French Connection in their A/W ’13 collection. While the collar detail is different and Lydia wouldn’t wear those pants, it’s definitely a near match. We’re about to enter coat season and between this and Olivia Pope’s Burberry trench I’m getting a lot of ideas.

The Wish List: Denim Jackets and Cords

14 Aug

Fashion is about reinvention and we have seen multiple times that everything old can be new again. Current trends for the new fall season have a heavy ’90s grunge influence and while the hunt has begun for the perfect plaid coat for when it gets cold (if only we had kept our entire wardrobes from high school) it’s the ’70s that is currently giving inspiration. This is a decade that embraced synthetics materials and some extreme power clashing and despite the many fashion disasters I find that I am drawn to this period. Maybe I have watched Almost Famous too many times.

Having watched The Conjuring last week – the bits I did see when I wasn’t hiding behind my scarf – I now find myself hankering for some ’70s stylings beyond the polyester. Plaid is something that links the decades of glam rock and grunge; the recent Marie Claire Zooey Deschanel cover married these two eras and it is something that features heavily this season. So throw on a plaid shirt and pair it with the two items that begin TV Ate My Wardrobe’s fall wish list.

Topshop Moto Vintage Borg Denim Jacket

Denim jacket topshop

While an actual vintage denim jacket from the ’70s would be preferable Topshop offers up this great alternative. Over at Mr Porter this week they have a feature on denim jackets including Clothes On Film’s Chris Laverty discussing the role of denim jackets as costuming. Laverty mentions how the denim jackets in the ’60s became a symbol of youth in movies such as Easy Rider. In The Conjuring it is Roger, the father of the family (played by Ron Livingston) who is sporting a jacket similar to the one above so the youth factor isn’t so implicit but as a family there is a relaxed vibe (until the bad things start to happen).

ModCloth Rocking Major Cords

ModCloth Tangerine Cords

I had a pair of black flared cords when I was at university that were my favorite thing, that was until it rained and they got soaked up to the knees. The flaring on those was pretty extreme and this pair from ModCloth has a more toned down approach. Except when it comes to the color, you can opt for the safe ocean (in the photo below) or if you want to truly embrace the ’70s aesthetic they are also available in the bold tangerine (above). Your inner Penny Lane will love the exposed center seams and high waist; oversized sunglasses are optional. Bare feet might not be the best approach so either sandals for the end of summer or the more autumnal Converse would work as footwear for this look.
