The Wish List: Jess’ Houndstooth Dress on New Girl

20 Feb

There’s not been much in the way of new TV thanks to the Winter Olympics (I have finally watched Orange is the New Black thanks to the extra time), we do still have something on out wish list from the last episode episode of New Girl and that is Jess’ houndstooth cap sleeves dress.

NG_ep316-sc29_S0A6738As mentioned in my review I’m a little into the houndstooth at the moment and if you’re a regular TV Ate My Wardrobe reader you will know that I have a penchant for all the tooths – hounds, puppy and dog – and for the costuming on New Girl. Putting the two together means an instant place on the wish list. This dress is from Aqua and is currently a steal as it’s more than half price. The belt is a good accessory as it cinches in the waist and breaks up the houndstooth.

If you want a more traditional black and white houndstooth dress with an exaggerated pattern then this Kate Spade (a Jessica Day favorite) Mavis dress is a fabulous alternative.

Plus it comes with the all important pockets – if I am unsure about buying a dress and it has pockets then I am way more likely to buy it. It’s the little things.

Fantasy Costuming: Which TV Character Would Wear this Burberry Prorsum Coat?

19 Feb

The fun thing about fantasy costuming is that conversations can be generated from almost any item of clothing and after TV Ate My Wardrobe friend and contributor Julie Hammerle alerted me to Naomie Harris’s incredible Burberry Prorsum pre-fall 2014 coat it sort of spiraled from Twitter to here. Harris attended the Burberry Prorsum fall 2014 London Fashion Week show on Monday and she managed to stand out in a crowd that also included Bradley Cooper, Anna Wintour and Harry Styles (who is quite the fashion week fan).

So which TV character could sport this stunning piece of outerwear?

Naomie Harris Burberry ProrsumFirst up is Hannibal’s Dr. Alana Bloom – there were also some suggestions that Hannibal himself, a wearer of Burberry could pull it off – as rich color and pattern are a key component of her costuming. While the floral jacquard velvet print is reminiscent of the stunning wallpaper used on Sherlock and all things 19th century, there’s also something of an inkblot quality to it which would work rather well with the overall theme of the show.

Burberry Prorsum pre-fall 2014This dress from the same pre-fall 2014 collection is also calling out to be used on Hannibal and as I’ve discussed in the past, Alana is one of the only characters who wears red on the show. Hannibal is one of the most visually accomplished and stunning shows on TV and something like this would fit into the look of this world. It’s all about attention to detail and the closer you look at this dress, the more you see.

Burberry ProrsumBack to the coat in question and another show that likes to use Burberry and that’s Scandal. While the color is perfect for Mellie, the overall look isn’t really her style. As one of our other contributors, Whitney McIntosh (see I said this was a group effort) pointed out it’s the kind of thing that Abby would wear. Abby’s had a wardrobe overhaul in season 3 and there’s been an increase in dramatic prints as her confidence has been on the rise and this coat would be a great alternative to the wine colored Donna Karan she has been wearing this year.

The Good Wife’s Diane Lockhart is another character who wouldn’t look out of place in a coat like this, as her office wear is very much on the high end exquisite scale.

Evolution of Hip-Hop Dancing and a $100 Bet on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show Debut

18 Feb

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon kicked off with a whole slew of famous faces including the already publicized Will Smith and some surprises. Following on from “Evolution of Mom Dancing” which Jimmy performed last year with Michelle Obama (who will be a guest on Thursday), Will Smith pulled out the big moves for “Evolution of Hip-Hop Dancing.” Dressed in the appropriate Fresh Prince approved dungarees (one strap undone of course), the moves include the “Running Man” and the “Carlton.”

http://youtu.be/ZTpn30Pms8I

The star-studded cameos were boosted in a fun way as Robert De Niro (who was the first guest on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon), Tina Fey and Seth Rogen (to name just a few) came out one by one to pay Jimmy $100 as part of a bet. Some produced the money from ‘safe places’ with Sarah Jessica Parker getting it out of her shoe and Mariah Carey pulling it out of her cleavage. Backstage would have been interesting and earlier in the day Lindsay Lohan Instagrammed a shot which hinted at some sort of involvement with the Fallon’s debut. If I hadn’t seen this I might not have recognized her. Stephen Colbert ends the segment adapting one the best TV welcomes, but I will leave that as a surprise and I’m sure there will be more treats this week on The Tonight Show.

Music Monday: Girls Double Bill

17 Feb

TV is generally the way I find out about bands now, gone are the days when I would do my homework and scribble down the names of songs I heard on the radio. The Girls end credits caused me to go on a Hannah Georgas binge after hearing the song “Millions” after last week’s episode “Free Snacks.” It’s a really great pop track and I have a soft spot for anything this upbeat that can drop an f-bomb without it sounding ridiculous and out of place.

The Girls closing track often sounds optimistic even if what we’ve seen before it has been less so; lyrics and melody don’t always mean the same thing so the words might be bleaker than the tune suggests. “Beach Hose” aired a lot of grievances that have been long bubbling under the surface and the Marnie/Hannah relationship has been fractured since the “you’re the wound” argument. It hasn’t really recovered from Marnie sleeping with Elijah last season and his presence reinforces this notion. “How are you Doing?” by The Living Sisters closes out “Beach House” and while everyone in the song says they are fine, saying you’re fine repeatedly often means the opposite.

http://youtu.be/0eyibSXdEYA

Is everything fine? It’s hard to know how the events of this episode will alter the already shifted dynamic of this friendship group and just because Hannah and Marnie have been friends for 8 years doesn’t mean they will be friends for another 8, no matter how many times they they’ve used the phrase BFF. This ‘truth sharing’ needed to happen and while I figured it would include a Marnie/Ray revelation, I’m glad they’re saving this bombshell for another occasion as this was first and foremost about this group of women. Shoshanna might be a cruel drunk – it’s always the most surprising person who is – and I don’t really know why she is still hanging out with them other than Jessa being her cousin. Maybe it’s the fact that they are older than her college friends and she still has romantic notions about who they are. Well maybe not after this trip.

Marnie is of course a nightmare, but she’s also at her most fascinating when she is at her worst and forced organized fun is never going to give you the weekend you desire even if you get some super awesome Instagram posts out of it – between Girls and Looking they’re really nailing the Instagram critiques. I mean the first Girls season 3 promo was all about the Instagram of it all.

Girls Beach HouseThe episode ends with no clear resolution between these four women and I think Marnie needs to accept that you can’t force fun. She should get a cushion embroidered with this remark from Hannah regarding their choreographed piece “Why does everything have to be perfect? Like it had a lot of spirit.” While waiting to leave Hannah starts doing this dance once again and one by one the others join in; is there hope for this friendship group? One thing we can rely on; there will always be great closing credits music.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

14 Feb

As promised it’s a New York Fashion Week special with a look at some of the famous faces who attended the runway shows this week and for all our other NYFW coverage head here.

Solange at MillyWe tend to only focus on faces from TV with this feature, however it would be remiss of me if I didn’t include Solange at the Milly by Michelle Smith runway show as this is hands down my favorite outfit from the front row this week. Combining bubblegum pink with two such bold colors could have been a step too far and yet Solange pulls it off and looks incredible. This coat is my everything and will help combat the current chilly New York climate.

Tina Fey spotted smiling while leaving the Lincoln Center during NYFW in New York CitySpeaking of weather preparedness here is Tina Fey leaving the Carolina Herrera show on Monday switching out strappy heels for Hunter wellies and they still look pretty fantastic with this outfit. I’m on the fence with the Tootsie like glasses, but everything else is fantastic.

Diane Kruger Hugo BossOut of the Box regular Diane Kruger’s outfit manages to be weather appropriate and super stylish as she heads to the Hugo Boss show. There’s no cute, but freezing strappy shoe BS here and it’s no surprise that I am very much in love with the sweater she is wearing.

Zosia Mamet Rebecca MinkoffThe coat over the shoulders thing is very fashion week and Girls’ Zosia Mamet also demonstrates this at Rebecca Minkoff in stunning orange. Coats and sweaters are my jam.

Taylor Schilling and Caitlin FitzgeraldLooking very different from their Masters of Sex and Orange is the New Black characters is Caitlin Fitzgerald and Taylor Schilling hangout together at the Thakoon show. I’m normally not all that into jumpsuits, but pairing it with these booties has got me on board the whole jumpsuit of it all and Fitzgerald is giving off an effortlessly chic vibe. I’m pro tights and I love the color combination of Schilling’s bold print dress with the rainbow infused sparkly coat. So much shimmer.

Rose ByrnePolka dots! Rose Byrne wearing a dress at Michael Kors that I would very much like in my closet and it’s a classic look. I’m going to ignore the clumpy heels as this is a perfect outfit without them.

AnnaSophia RobbMore polka dots! And this time it’s shoes with AnnaSophia Robb wearing the cutest heels with a Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress at the DVF show (of course). Robb is always a delight at both NYFW and on the red carpet; while we don’t know if she will return as 1980s Carrie Bradshaw, in the present day she is just as fashion forward.

The Wish List: Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Gina’s Sweaters

13 Feb

It looks like we have a rival to April Ludgate as the character whose wardrobe we covet the most and the character in question comes from another Mike Schur co-created show as Chelsea Peretti’s Gina adds another couple of sweaters to the wish list she is already on. Both the new wish list additions feature on the recent episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and while I probably wouldn’t wear the Floorgasm attire, Gina is quickly turning into a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite.

Gina B99First up this lightning bolt sweater adds weather whimsy to your outfit and it’s from A.L.C. Plus it looks great with red pants if you want to brave the colored pants thing – and you really should – mustard pants are what I’m currently after (not to be worn with the mustard hoodie when I eventually find the perfect one). Gina’s wearing really fantastic lipstick too and it adds another pop of color to this ensemble.

Gina Brooklyn Nine Nine sweaterThis diamond sweater is from J. Crew and it’s cashmere so not only does it look awesome, it also feels incredible. An itchy sweater is terrible no matter how fantastic it looks and you won’t have that problem here. More great lip color too. And Gina’s right, she does have great hair.

Happy Galentine’s Day!

13 Feb

“What’s Galentine’s Day? Oh it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home and we come and kick it breakfast style. Ladies celebrating ladies”

Galentine's DayIt might be a fictional holiday courtesy of Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation, but Galentine’s Day is something TV Ate My Wardrobe fully supports. Celebrating lady friends AND with breakfast food; who wouldn’t want that?! Make sure to bring an intricate art and crafts project or at least some sort of gift certificate. Failing that, just make sure there are waffles and plenty of whipped cream.

April Galentine's DayAnn leaving Pawnee has left a big beautiful (insert your own choice here) hole in Leslie’s BFF heart and I’m disappointed we didn’t get one final Galentine’s Day before she departed. I’m going to miss this pairing as it’s one of my favorite TV female friendships and it’s one that didn’t suffer from the usual cliches. Instead of being sad here is a supercut of all the best Leslie and Ann moments – yes it’s over 25 minutes long and it’s all good.

http://youtu.be/QSFsF7V93Mo

I know this scene doesn’t come from a Galentine’s Day episode, however it captures everything I love about the lady friendships on Parks and Recreation and as April testifies “everyone know this song, it’s amazing.” Yes, yes it is.

Be sure to check out the Galentine’s Day Google Hangout being hosted by Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls at the Party today.

Dresses for New Girl’s Jess from Oscar de la Renta’s NYFW Fall 2014 Collection

12 Feb

This is a sequel of sorts to the September New York Fashion Week Oscar de la Renta runway show which featured polka dot and floral gowns that we thought would be perfect for Jess from New Girl. Both of these two patterns are once again included in the fall 2014 Oscar de la Renta’s collection and we’ve got Jess vibes all over again.

Some of these choices are more overtly Jess and while she tends to prefer a ’50s silhouette, the bubble skirt would be a fun and not all that crazy departure for this character and cobalt blue is a fantastic color on her. Both the polka dot and dramatic pink skirted gowns are probably not going to fit in with the styling on New Girl unless they get invited to another fancy pants party, so this is the ultimate in fantasy costuming. I could see Zooey Deschanel wearing either on an awards show red carpet.

New Girl 3.16 “Sister” Review: “A Girl Who Looks Like me, but with Chaos in her Eyes”

12 Feb

Extending Jess’ immediate family on New Girl means bringing in Abby; a previously unseen (and unmentioned?) older sister who just happens to be the opposite of Jess. This isn’t particularly revolutionary of course and sitcoms love to do this type of storyline, but it ends up being the strongest aspect in a chaotic episode. Casting Linda Cardellini as Abby is an instant way to make me forgive retconning of this kind and I am very glad that she didn’t end the episode on a plane to Portland. This is one of those episodes where the three stories don’t really mesh even with some connecting elements and so we returned to the disjointed feeling that the first half of this season suffered from.

NG_ep316-sc16_S0A5849So let’s start with the good and everything about Jess and Abby’s conversation about their mom (oh hey Jamie Lee Curtis!) over wine made me practically giddy to have Cardellini playing Abby.* In a short time it is easy to believe these two are sisters as there is strong chemistry between Deschanel and Cardellini. This scene is undercut with sadness from both characters and their relationship dynamic is clearly mapped out; Jess has always been seen as the ‘perfect baby’ daughter and Abby is the delinquent. Even with these fundamental differences they can both laugh about their mother’s tiny blue denim backpack. It’s all going rather smoothly until Abby sees a text from Cece asking if she has ruined everything yet. Abby ends up pulling a move that is expected and somehow Jess tracks her down to a hotel (via her mom’s credit card? Ok we’ll go with that) and this leads to an honest conversation between the pair and Jess doesn’t sugarcoat it reinforcing the notion that Abby does have a habit of ruining everything.

If New Girl is about this second phase of growing up when you hit your late 20s/early 30s then Abby is one step behind Jess et al as she’s still acting like a rebellious teenager. Moving back to Portland to live with their mother appears to be her only option at this point and this feels like failure to Abby. As we saw recently in “Birthday” Jess has a habit of forming expectations that people can’t meet and with her sister it comes across as the opposite; she expects her to fuck up which is why she doesn’t want her to meet Nick. Plus it seems like all of the Day women have a thing for him.

Jess has met Nick’s family and it’s a surprise to him that she wouldn’t be comfortable with him knowing that she has a sister who says inappropriate things and has been in jail (this probably isn’t the first time she’s been in a cell). As with The Mindy Project’s Mindy, Jess tries the whole movie to real life idea just switch out rom-coms for The Parent Trap. Abby is something that doesn’t fit in with this idea of happy families and while Jess has accepted that her parents aren’t getting back together, prior to this episode she also didn’t want Nick to meet the black sheep of her family.

Unfortunately Nick took this as a sign that Jess was embarrassed of him, which couldn’t be further from the truth and this is one of the only connecting aspects of the episodes. Nick is tasked with being Schmidt’s wingman and their BFF status hasn’t been explored all that much since “Keaton.” Schmidt accuses Nick of only caring about Jess and Nick is determined to be a good friend; to be a good friend to Schmidt sometimes it involves smooching an old lady and getting punched in the face. The Schmidt/Nick dynamic delivers some of the episodes funnier moments and I’d liked to have seen more of them together hatching terrible schemes in this unusual dating arena.

The last time Jon Lovitz appeared as Rabbi Feiglin was back in “The Box” when Schmidt was at a creative low and while his joke telling was pretty funny, this aspect of the episode didn’t work for me. Thankfully the writers have worked out a lot of the Schmidt issues and unlike Nick I rather enjoyed his monologuing.

Winston now has a partner in crazy and I’m glad to see he’s still dating bus driver Bertie, even if the soup dinner party only exists as a reason to address the Cece and Coach non-relationship from another patchy episode “Longest Night Ever” – maybe this week feels so disjointed because they are referencing other episodes that have pacing/story problems. Like Cece I had forgotten about her brief tryst with Coach and it only gets brought up as they’re the only people who can make the “night lunch.” It ends in an attempt to recreate that great two hour make out session; instead they end up with a bad back and a broken tooth. Some things should only happen once.

So returning to the Abby of it all and as she is staying for an unspecified amount of time I think we can expect shenanigans or hijinks with a heart. I’m looking forward to exploring this relationship and how her presence in the loft will throw things into disarray. Seeing Jess challenged in this way will be fun, especially as Abby has a low tolerance for some of Jess’ quirks “If you a cappella sing at me one more time, I will rip that stupid little dress off you and shove it down your mouth.” P.S. Abby that houndstooth dress is super cute and I definitely want it, not that I just bought houndstooth bedding or anything.

“Sister” isn’t a great episode of New Girl and it’s the first misfire of 2014, however there is plenty to feel positive about and I’m happy Linda Cardellini gets to flex her comedic chops in at least one more episode.

*I’m a big Linda Cardellini fan and the first time I saw her on TV was not as Lindsay Weir in Freaks and Geeks (which I only watched for the first time relatively recently), but as Nurse Sam Taggart in E.R. and so this wild child past doesn’t seem all that out of the ordinary. Now I want to write a piece on the good girl/bad girl roles that Cardellini has played, with her most recent Mad Men stint straddling Catholic wife with Don Draper mistress.

Theory’s NYFW Fall 2014 Collection and Homeland’s Carrie Mathison

11 Feb

Claire Danes covered the January issue of Glamour magazine and mentioned that “Carrie wears a lot of Theory. That is her brand. She’s a Theory girl. It’s a lot of navy. A lot of navy.” Upon seeing Theory’s NYFW fall 2014 RTW collection we noticed several outfits that are very much the Carrie Mathison CIA uniform and here they are for your perusal.

Ok maybe Carrie wouldn’t wear some of the skirts (especially ones that are as sheer as this), but hey maybe she’ll want to try something new. The color palette favors the muted tones that Carrie prefers including the aforementioned navy.
