Fantasy Costuming Fall 2013: Dressing Olivia Pope

23 Jul

TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Fantasy Costuming series took a brief hiatus and now that all of Scandal has been consumed it’s time to turn to one of the most talked about characters currently on TV. Olivia Pope is an interesting figure beyond her clothing of course, but aspects of her wardrobe set her apart from the usual Washington D.C. power suits and the lack of navy and red makes her stand out from the political crowd. Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo isn’t a stranger to the White House scene as she worked on The West Wing. Even though they share a location Scandal is far removed from the that version of politics and creator Shonda Rhimes told Entertainment WeeklyI feel like The West Wing brought us Washington as we’d all want it to be. And this show brings us Washington as we hope it would never be.”

The costuming of Olivia Pope is far removed from Aaron Sorkin’s politic world (Mellie would probably fit right in as her First Lady pieces are pretty traditional). The first thing that is striking about Olivia is the amount of white she wears and this intentionally reveals several things about how she wants to be perceived – she’s the good guy, she’s not on the red team or blue team and there is a calming presence to her limited and neutral color palette.

Kerry Washington recently tweeted “I’m CRAZY excited about this #Scandal fitting that I am about to have with @LynPaolo – like giddy butterflies kinda excited. Wow” and so to fill in the time between now and the new season we wanted to find some potential outfits for Olivia Pope from all corners of the internet both high end and more affordable. For those who might love Olivia’s wardrobe, but might not want that much white in your wardrobe then we’ve got a few pieces for you. The gowns that Olivia wears are impressive (and sometimes one of a kind) but we’ve decided to focus on work and lounge wear.

French Connection Olivia Pope

Feminine tailoring is a key factor when it comes to the Olivia Pope look and this “Pop Dot Woven” jacket and matching pants from French Connection is an affordable way to deliver this sharp style. This outfit creates the all important silhouette and uses the key tones that we see in Olivia’s office wear. The contrast piping breaks down the polka dot texture, as do the black lapels, cuffs and pocket details on the jacket which help give it a structured appearance.

Burberry Spring 2014

Burberry Prorsum S/S ’13

Out of all of Olivia’s amazing clothes it’s not her incredible gowns that we here at TV Ate My Wardrobe covet (though we wouldn’t say no), instead it’s her vast collection of coats that take our fancy. Washington D.C. can get rather chilly in the winter (both the weather and politically) and so it’s only appropriate that she has so many. While we’ve already seen Olivia in a traditional Burberry trench, this more embellished “Double Duchess Caped Trench Coat” from Burberry Prorsum adds a modern twist with the canopy cape. While costume designer Lyn Paolo has said they try to avoid anything that is too catwalk, this version of the Burberry trench maintains the traditional look and enhances it without being too showy.

Carven mint-green

Carven

Mint green works on the Olivia Pope color spectrum and these Carven double crepe pants might be from last season (now on sale with more than half off) but pastel colors are here to stay and feature in collections for the fall. Olivia has worn green before in a slightly warmer shade than this in the episode “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” that saw a 10 month jump and showed Olivia trying to move on with her life (and failing to do so).  Hopefully if she was to opt for green again it would be under better circumstances; judging from how season 2 ended this is unlikely.

Maison Martin MargielaMaison Martin Margiela MM6

Not only does Olivia have a vast array of coats, but her lounge wear collection is also pretty impressive. Olivia is just as happy at home on the couch eating a bowl of popcorn and drinking red wine as she is fixing things and this grey oversized cape cardigan from Maison Martin Margiela MM6 is perfect. Luxurious knitwear seems like the worst idea as it’s super hot at the moment but come the fall when Scandal returns this won’t feel like such a ridiculous idea.

Reiss

Reiss A/W ’13

Another office look for Olivia and this one maintains feminine and slim-cut styling, while also featuring a harsher edge thanks to the “Ezra” leather skirt. This wouldn’t be the first time we have seen Olivia in leather as she has worn olive leather leggings in the episode “Seven Fifty Two” (paired with a Burberry trench) and of course there are those many leather gloves. Black leather gives off a strong impression but pairing it with the “Mimi” frill neck and sleeve top offers a soft compromise. Olivia is going to have new challenges when Scandal returns so it is likely that her costuming will evolve.

Would these outfit choices get the Olivia Pope approval?

Music Monday: Dancing Down the Street to David Bowie

22 Jul

This is primarily a TV website, but that doesn’t mean that movies, books and music are off limits. As it’s the start of the week and the weather is hot and the news is focused on the imminent arrival of a baby (and treating it like no other babies have ever been born) I’ve chosen the song that has should hopefully clear out those start of the week blues.

I finally saw Frances Ha last week and it’s probably the best film I have seen this year, a year that has featured many “that was ok” and shoulder shrug responses upon leaving a cinema screen. It’s not been a truly terrible year for film; it hasn’t been all that memorable either. My one concern before seeing Frances Ha was that my expectations might be too high; I really like Greta Gerwig and I’d heard a lot of positive comments about the film and its portrayal of a woman who is drifting while her best friend is getting her life together. My fears were unwarranted and I don’t think I’ve seen a film deal with a female character like this, without making her ultimate goal to find love in the big city and it is so refreshing. Frances is not perfect and her choices aren’t either, but that’s ok as we all stumble (and like Frances this happens both physically and metaphorically).

What she does do and it’s one thing that I want to do since I’ve had the song on repeat is dance down the street to David Bowie’s “Modern Love” (for some reason the soundtrack incorrectly lists it as “Young Americans”) and while it’s probably too hot to do so, it might make you want to do the same. And yes falling over will likely happen.

This David Bowie video will also help with a style solution if you ever wanted to wear a bow tie, but didn’t know how to do it up.

Veronica Mars Debuts New Footage at Comic-Con

22 Jul

Comic-Con is big business for a range of shows that we cover here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and the one show now turned movie that probably caused the most excitement for this writer is Veronica Mars. The Kickstarter funded project debuted new footage and it doesn’t disappoint (well maybe the amount of Piz disappoints but hey, at least he references Buffy).

My first experience of Veronica Mars was last year and so I’m pretty new to this world and while The X-Files reunionCatching Fire trailer, X-Men: Days of Future Past panel and Hannibal gag reel appear high on my best of Comic-Con list, this Veronica Mars preview tops. Though as a sidebar if someone could put the whole Entertainment Weekly “Women Who Kick Ass” panel online I think it could challenge Veronica Mars for that title.

Veronica Mars Comic Con

The preview includes new footage from the film and interviews with several cast members old and new. Shots of creator Rob Thomas and some of the cast watching the Kickstarter counter increasing reminds us why this film is happening and that it’s the fans that have made this possible. A Party Down reunion is a welcome sight as Ryan Hansen and Martin Starr are interviewed together; I would be very happy to see the pair don pink bow ties and trade insults once again. Oh and that look Logan gives Veronica in the car is enough to reignite the shipper flame (that never really went out). Expect dancing, back flips and wet guys in suits.

Style points are given to all the Team t-shirts (with Dick being the overall winner, because, well it’s Ryan Hansen) and Tina Majorino’s new shorter and voluminous cut gets the biggest nod of the day as she looks fantastic.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

19 Jul

It’s been a busy week with Emmy nominations, Comic-Con and magazine covers and this edition of “Out of the Box” covers all three. While it’s still very much the summer and my Scandal catch up is underway, it’s also time to look to returning shows like Breaking Bad  and from the activity on my Twitter feed most casts are returning to their shows for the fall season. As always this is a snapshot of what I have been watching and what news/photo shoots have caught my eye online and in print.

Winner: Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny at The X-Files Reunion Panel, Comic-Con

X Files Reunion

The X-Files holds a very special place in my TV watching history and the relationship between Mulder and Scully is a very big part of this. I have never been to Comic-Con but I know that if I was attending this year then this X-Files reunion panel would be number one on my list and from this ScreenFad live blog it sounds like it was a relaxed and fun affair. Both Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny look content and happy to be reunited in front of a large audience of fans and thrilled shippers all around the world when Anderson suggested that Mulder and Scully would “Have sex” on a date. Duchovny followed this up with “Then maybe dinner?”

Runner Up: Bryan Cranston for GQ

bryan-cranston-gq-magazine-august-2013-04

It’s been a good week for Bryan Cranston as he received an Emmy nomination and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; he’s also on the cover of the August issue of GQ. The photo shoot has Cranston ditching the Heisenberg/Walter White threads (this is a far cry from standing in the desert in his underwear) and going for a tailored look. It’s a good choice and I don’t think we’ve ever seen him look this dreamy.

Runner Up: Aubrey Plaza for The New York Times

Aubrey Plaza NY Times

Aubrey Plaza is currently on the promotional trail for The To Do List and this includes a profile in The New York Times. Opting for a photo that wouldn’t look out of place on Instagram (because that is a thing we do now) the styling leans much older than the skort wearing teen that Plaza plays in The To Do List and is more polished than Plaza’s Parks and Recreation character April.

Aaron Paul and Neil Patrick Harris Announcing the 2013 Emmy Nominations

65th Primetime Emmy Nominations Announcement

I’m pretty sure there is nothing more adorable than Aaron Paul in polka dot bow tie (ok maybe his Price is Right appearance) and I’m sure he will offer something just as delightful at the Emmy awards come September. Here Paul is announcing the nominees for the 2013 Emmys and while I’m still simmering from some of the missing names/shows (like Hannibal, Jake Johnson and The Americans), Aaron Paul deservedly got another nomination for his role of Jesse Pinkman on Breaking Bad. Neil Patrick Harris looks just as dapper as always and was a late minute replacement for Kate Mara (she had travel issues) showing that even with short notice and at 5.30 am he’s always on it when it comes to hosting.

Boardwalk Empire Promo: “Only Kings Understand Each Other”

18 Jul

Several attempts to challenge Nucky’s power have been made during the first three seasons of Boardwalk Empire and he will face a new rival when we return to Atlantic City in September. HBO released a teaser last month that showed a glimpse at new character Dr Valentin Narcisse, played by Jeffrey Wright and in this full length promo it is suggests that Narcisse will be the one challenging Nucky for power this season.

The mass shooting that occurred at Gillian’s whorehouse that killed most of Gyp Rosetti’s men remains unsolved in the eyes of the law, but we know very well that it was Richard Harrow who acted alone in this spree. Harrow, Capone and Chalky are three characters that I would like to see more of and while they don’t feature prominently in this promo I would imagine they will all have an important role to play; where their loyalty falls is another question.

Nucky seems to be using the old playground defense of “he started it” as he says “I didn’t ask for trouble. What was brought to my doorstep, I returned.” Considering he had a crate with a body in it (Owen *sob*) delivered, what he returns is not pleasant.

As always there is plenty of glitz, dancing and drinking that goes hand in hand with the violent underbelly of Boardwalk Empire and the one person missing from both this and the first teaser is Margaret; what role will she play when the show returns Sunday, September 8?

Breaking Bad Season 5 Photos: New Alliances?

17 Jul

There is less than a month to go until the final 8 episodes of Breaking Bad and AMC has released another batch of promo photos; first they reminded us that “All Bad Things Must Come to an End” followed by the recent shot of Walt looking menacing with the words “Remember My Name” emblazoned across his figure. The teasers have done a great job of well, teasing by telling us the show is ending, a fact I was trying to ignore and telling us that Walter White means business (or wants to join a Fame revival). It’s time to see the rest of the cast and theorize about what these pairings could mean for the end of this journey.

Breaking Bad Jesse and Walt

The partnership that started it all has been through its fair share of triumphs, disasters and deception. The last episode saw a petrified Jesse receiving a bag full of money from Walt and their relationship has been severed in what appears to be an amicable fashion (at least a lot more amicable than it was for Mike). That isn’t to say that Jesse isn’t broken by his experience with his former chemistry teacher or that he won’t get sucked back into the business once again. Jesse is the heart of Breaking Bad and so it has become increasingly difficult watching him get torn apart by the things he has done and if he does manage to break free from Walt he will always be looking over his shoulder as the shot above suggests. Nothing would make me happier if Jesse gets to drive away from all of this.

Hank and Jesse Breaking Bad

The episode that ended the first half of this final season had Hank finding out that Walter White is really Heisenberg (his discovery was made in the most innocuous place – the bathroom, thanks to Walt’s toilet reading material) and so it’s not outside the realm of possibility that Hank will attempt to team up with Jesse to bring Walt down. There is bad blood between Hank and Jesse as Hank beat the living crap out of Jesse back in season 3. This led to one of the many amazing Aaron Paul moments as he delivered a speech full of hate about Hank from his hospital bed. Will they be able to put this behind them? This photo has them both looking at each other with suspicion, with Jesse looking over his shoulder once again and if they do work together trust will be an issue. I’d really like to see a happy ending for both Jesse and Hank, but knowing this show and how far Walt is willing to go I fear that one of them won’t make it to the end of the show alive.

A note on Jesse’s wardrobe; gone are the hoodies and this look is more adult than we have seen before, the double plaid works together and his appearance is more rugged. This weathered look reflects the toll that his time with Walt has had on him both mentally and physically.

Skyler and Walt Breaking Bad

Jesse isn’t the only one who has been broken by his relationship with Walt as Walt’s family has been destroyed by his work in the crystal meth business. While Walt Jr. and Holly have been shielded from this to some extent, Skyler has not been so fortunate. After becoming involved in the money laundering side Skyler has become a shell of her former self and suffered a breakdown. Skyler did manage to convince Walt to end the business after she took him to a storage unit and showed him how much money he has accumulated and asked him how much their family is worth. That’s the reason Walt started all of this, but because his cancer didn’t kill him like he thought it would he went a lot further than he ever intended.

While the family scene at the end of the last episode suggested closure, thanks to the opening scene of season 5 we know that things have escalated and this is probably thanks to Hank’s discovery. What role will Skyler play in all of this? Will she remain the dutiful wife and help Walt bury more secrets as the photo above hints at? Or will she stand tall against the man who is no longer anything like the one she married?

Answers will be forthcoming when Breaking Bad returns Sunday, August 11 on AMC.

Claire Danes Covers Vogue: Creating Iconic TV Characters

16 Jul

My So-Called Life was the first show that understood me; a statement that sounds grand and ridiculous but one I hold to be true at both the ages of 14 and still at 30. After rewatching it for This Was TV recently I realized that it isn’t just the teenage version of me that can connect with this show and its characters, it still resonates today and a lot of this is to with Claire Danes. Danes is back on TV in another iconic role as Carrie Mathison on Homeland and while I haven’t felt compelled to write about Carrie in my journal in the way I did about Angela Chase (also I don’t have a journal anymore), Danes has helped create a character that is just as mesmerizing to watch.

claire-danes-cover-story-06_134646500817

The big talking point of this Vogue interview and theme of the editorial is Homeland (this isn’t particularly surprising as the show returns in September) and co-star Damian Lewis appears alongside Danes in some of the shots. The interview takes a look at Danes’ career as a whole – from her teen performance on My So-Called Life, to the incident that got her movies banned from the Philippines, her decision to go to college, why she did Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and how Temple Grandin was incredibly rewarding but she struggled to get work after this award winning performance. Next came Homeland and Danes had a decision to make when it came to the audition as she was also up for the role of Leonardo DiCaprio’s secretary in J. Edgar, it turns out it wasn’t a hard choice to make as Danes tells Vogue “I was like, ‘Do I want to play the secretary to the boss man or do I want to be the boss man?’ I want to be the boss man.” Also if Danes and DiCaprio are going to appear on screen together I think it needs to be something more than what this part in J. Edgar could offer.

Last night I watched the Claire Danes movie Evening for the first time; a film which has some pacing problems and the odd overwrought emotion, but one that I found compelling overall thanks to the incredible cast. It was on this set that Danes met husband Hugh Dancy and in a house that includes Carrie Mathison and Will Graham this quote from friend and actress Gaby Hoffmann about Danes and Dancy is brilliant “It’s amazing she found someone who loves crafts as much as she does.” The shot below is from Evening and the striped bathrobe and Panama hat combination Dancy is wearing is too good to resist posting.  Despite being set in the 1950s Dane’s costume of a white blouse and full and flared patterned skirt are on trend and it’s something I could definitely see myself wearing as this hot weather persists.

Claire Danes Hugh Dancy Evening

Danes’ role in Evening is the first time that I recall seeing her sing and while I joked on Twitter last night that I would like to see a Saul/Carrie duet on season 3 of Homeland, there is a Carrie quote from the premiere in this Vogue interview that suggests we might get to here Danes’ vocal talents “I didn’t just stop taking my meds. I run every day, six miles, sometimes more; singing helps.”

One person who has know Danes for as long as she has been on TV is My So-Called Life creator Winnie Holzman and she articulates perfectly why Danes has such a strong screen presence “Claire can be awkward and graceful and beautiful and not so beautiful and tortured and calm, and we have all that roiling inside of us, but we are so often typed or labeled. Sometimes we watch people who we want to learn from or be a little like.” This is probably why Holzman created a character that still resonates and means something almost 20 years later (yep My So-Called Life turns 20 next year, let that sink in for a moment).

Plot wise Homeland stumbled last season and while some aspects of the show come across as ridiculous at times (including the central love story) Danes is still incredibly effective. One scene that really stands out is from the episode “State of Independence” as Carrie descends into the darkness and chooses to die, it’s an incredibly tough sequence to watch and it feels like an eternity for Carrie to change her mind and save herself from this decision. Much has been said about her ability to show raw emotion and to not hold anything back and this is part of her appeal. Danes talked to Elle magazine about how uncomfortable she is with the fascination her cry face generates “I have to say, I find it very odd that it’s been sort of objectified. It’s just the way feelings register on my face. It’s not calculated; it’s not an aggressive gesture. It’s been isolated from the rest of my work, like a tacked-on thing. It’s not.” I’ll repeat what I said over at This Was TV  and that we point it out because “your chin quiver makes my chin quiver.” It’s moments like this in all of the roles that Danes has played that allows the audience to connect and why characters like Angela Chase and Carrie Mathison matter.

The August issue of Vogue hits newsstands July 23 and Homeland season 3 premieres on Showtime Sunday, September 29.

Music Monday: Regina Spektor’s Song for Orange is the New Black

15 Jul

This is a slight play on TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Mad Men Music Monday feature and we want to give you a good musical start to your week. Regina Spektor’s music has appeared on many TV shows (including Veronica MarsGrey’s Anatomy and Boardwalk Empire) and you could probably make an excellent mixtape of all of Spektor’s soundtrack appearances; she even featured on our 2012-2013 playlist with “Don’t Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas)” which appeared on season 2 of Girls

Regina Spektor has now written and performed a new track for the opening credits of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black (which is currently top of my ‘to watch’ list) called “You’ve Got Time” and it is superb.

Enjoy!

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

12 Jul

Last week was a summer dresses special and “Out of the Box” returns to its normal format with this edition. This week we will be looking at a mixture of red carpet appearances, magazine shoots and talk shows; patterns are a huge theme and the more they clash the better.

Winner: Diane Kruger on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

DIANE KRUGER

The Bridge premiered on FX this week and so Diane Kruger has been doing the red carpet/talk show circuit much to my delight. It’s not a secret that Diane Kruger is someone who I admire as both an actress and with her bold fashion choices and the above look definitely falls into the latter category. This isn’t the first time that Kruger has opted for two very different patterns and this polka dot t-shirt with a floral print skirt from Emanuel Ungaro’s Resort 2014 will probably be quite divisive, but here at TV Ate My Wardrobe we think it looks amazing. The slit in the skirt is probably a tad too high but the high waisted belt effect and demure neckline of the t-shirt distracts from this and it’s the clashing patterns that are in focus. It’s an outfit that would be too much on most (Solange could definitely wear it) and Kruger manages to work the different patterns so it doesn’t look too out there, this is helped by minimal makeup and her simple hair down approach.

Runner Up: Michelle Dockery for Harper’s Bazaar

Michelle Dockery Harpers Bazaar

It’s the second week in a row that Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery makes an appearance on this list and while the sun might still be shining magazine editorials are looking to the fall season. This striped affair is from Miu Miu’s Fall 2013 collection and with the dash of polka dots on the neck scarf it’s another patterned success. The tights/coat combo might be a much if Dockery was walking down the street but it’s perfect for a striking magazine cover.

Runner Up: Michael B. Jordan at the Fruitvale Station Premiere

Michael B Jordan New York premiere Fruitvale Station

Michael B. Jordan is currently promoting Fruitvale Station, a film which has already picked up awards at Cannes and Sundance and is getting early Oscar buzz. Jordan is known for his roles in The WireFriday Night Lights, Parenthood and Chronicle and I’m so excited to see this much attention being given to this very special actor (Andrew Garfield is also a big fan). Jordan has also been delivering style wise on the red carpet and while I’m not normally a fan of the shiny suit, Jordan looks dapper and well put together in this attire.

Who is your look of the week?

MAC ’90s Makeup Revival: Be Your Own Angela Chase

11 Jul

It’s hard to escape from ’90s nostalgia whether in countless lists on BuzzFeed or projects like the Boy Meets World spinoff Girl Meets World. While I can still pretend that The X-Files didn’t debut 20 years ago and still get excited about the forthcoming reunion panel at Comic Con and ignore crop tops despite them being in every shop at the moment; one thing I am glad to see is the return of some discontinued MAC products.

MAC_By_Request

MAC by Request is back and it features six lipstick shades and five eye shadows from the ’90s that are no longer available; now is your chance to change that. You can vote between now and July 21 on the MAC Facebook page for the products you would like to see return (one ballot per product category each day) and the top three lipsticks and eye shadows will be on sale this winter.

With smokey eye colors such as Ashbury and the muted peachy-pink Flavour lipstick (second from the right in the picture above) you can perfect your 90s grunge look and because I thought wearing blue mascara was my only makeup choice I’m glad that this revival will give me a chance to rectify that. MAC was a product that existed in magazines and not in real life when I was a teenager and as you can tell from my blue mascara remark I definitely wasn’t an expert (not that I am now either).

Flavour is from the 1994 Freedom Colour Additions collection and is a muted tone that looks like something My So-Called Life’s Angela would choose – Angela rarely strayed from neutral tones except for in the pilot and when she was angry at Rayanne for sleeping with Jordan – which is probably why it stands out to me. There are bold colors among the nearly nude ones if you fancy something a bit more Cher from Clueless with Glam (far left) and Pink Poodle (far right).

What discontinued MAC product do you want to see in your makeup bag?
