Out of the Box: Look of the Week

19 Dec

Welcome to one of 2014’s last editions of “Out of the Box” with another collection of the week’s best looks from talk show appearances, the red carpet and magazine cover shoots. Taking a break from pre-holiday super glitzy awards attire with a somewhat more casual week.

Wired Jessica WilliamsFirst up is my favorite Daily Show correspondent and Jessica Williams covers the super colorful January issue of Wired magazine. The shoot itself is also an array of bold block color and here is one of my favorite shots:

Jessica Williams WiredThe issue focuses on new media and in it Williams proposes a different kind of gossip site; one that uses clickbait headlines to discuss the wider issues at play. I’ll let Williams do the explaining:

“But there’s something missing in all this new new media craziness, and that is something that uses celebrity news as a way to get into a really serious analysis of our culture. The Kardashians are walking clickbait—but let’s look closer. Do Kim and Kanye affect how society feels about interracial relationships and blended families? What does our obsession with Jennifer Lawrence say about third-wave feminism? Start with a headline that’s superjuicy; a flashy, sexy picture. And then, after the first couple of lines, hit them with some really severe analysis. When they think they’re getting dirt, we give them vegetables. Which is kind of what The Daily Show does already.”

Krysten RitterKrysten Ritter appeared on Good Morning America this week and this all black ensemble manages to a fun twist on classic chic with the various textures on the coat and skirt. Bonus red lip color points on this pavement talk show appearance runway.

Emily BluntEmily Blunt’s styling on her way into Jimmy Kimmel Live is of the super casual variety and I am so into the oversized knitwear and floral pants (perhaps because I am currently wearing a variation of this).

Maisie WilliamsArya Stark is getting a new look on the next season of Game of Thrones and here is Maisie Williams at the Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb premiere this week wearing a cute peplum/mini skirt all-black ensemble. Adding a pop of pattern with leopard print shoes and giving me so many flashbacks to the festival bracelets I refused to take off for months after the summer was over.

Rounding things off with one more talk show appearance and another lady TV Ate My Wardrobe hearts with Jenny Slate on Conan in this very sexy dress with a plunging neckline. Bonus Marcel the Shell singing video. I adore her:

Best of TV Costuming 2014: The John Oliver Check Shirt Parade on Last Week Tonight

8 Dec

Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2014″ costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items that we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking, we want to look at this year’s TV through the prism of costume.

When John Oliver hosted The Daily Show over the summer of 2013 it became clear that when Jon Stewart returned, if Oliver went back to his correspondent position then this would be a huge missed opportunity. Thankfully this wasn’t the case and one of the best new shows of 2014 is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver; a weekly show (sadly finished for the season) covering a range of global news stories as well as a more in-depth investigations ranging from student loans to FIFA to the failed prison system. It has been a breath of fresh air and while The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are still both producing excellent material covering a much shorter time frame, Last Week Tonight has taken the satirical current affairs genre to new heights.

IMG_8665The look of the show is similar to pretty much every other late night talk show, satirical or otherwise. There is a desk with a city backdrop and the image box appears to the left of Oliver’s head a la The Daily Show/Colbert. Aesthetically though, Oliver’s wardrobe is different and striking as he has embraced a variety of check color shirts and ties. In his role as correspondent he stuck to a run of the mill look never venturing too far from the conventional. By injecting color and pattern in this way he is not only signals that this is his show, he also sets himself apart from those performing a similar role that have come before him.

Shots were fired quickly in the strong shirt and tie game with Oliver wearing the red pairing in the shot above in the second episode. One presenter in Australia wore the same suit every day to see if anyone would notice to show how little attention is paid to what men wear in comparison to women. While it is far from surprising that no one called him out for this repeat outfit, it is noticeable when the wardrobe department mixes things by pairing such striking colors together and Oliver’s attire is a visual bonus on top of everything else Last Week Tonight has achieved in its first season. This isn’t to say there is anything particularly radical about Oliver’s attire; however it is striking because the talk show look is a standard approach looks more like this:

IMG_8670Check isn’t the Last Week Tonight uniform as such because this pattern isn’t worn every single week; however patterned shirts make up about half of what has been worn by Oliver over the first season adding to the fresh look of the show. Maybe we can throw in some paisley for season 2?

Below is a gallery of the best of John Oliver’s check (and the occasional plaid) shirt stylings on Last Week Tonight.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

6 Nov

Welcome once again to Behind the Insta-Scenes! A new feature offering a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off set) antics.

Halloween dress up from last week (Michael Sheen and Sarah Silverman are still my Halloween costume faves), heading out of town, baby animals and Christmas comes early when you’re shooting a TV show. Plus various other on set hijinks.

I have no idea what Steven Pasquale is doing with his arms in this shot, but here is the Alicia Florrick campaign team including the very best body woman there is.

Broad City Live is very much a thing I would want to see. For now here is a picture of Ilana on the tour bus and the second season has been given a premiere date – January 14. Happy New Year indeed!

It’s all smiles on the Elementary set between Sherlock’s former and current protege. Instantly loving the difference in style between Kitty and Joan.

More from Elementary as Indiana Jones, Melanie Daniels and Maverick all made an appearance for Halloween.

Hannah Simone was on Conan this week and animal expert David Mizejewski appeared the same night; hence the super cute piglet. Simone’s expression and dress are both on point.

Another shot of Hannah Simone this time from New Girl makeup artist Jorjee Douglass showing Michelle DeMilt working with Simone during a bar scene (for New Girl makeup tips head here).

The Orange is the New Black ladies are prolific Instagram users and it makes me so happy when a group photo like this one is posted. Thanks Uzo Aduba!

It is only the Best Fucking News Team and after a trip to Austin last week, The Daily Show went live (as did The Colbert Report) for the midterm election results. Doing their best Queen album cover shot.

Christmas has come to The Mindy Project and this means super sparkly dresses are on the styling menu with Kaling wearing an original creation by costume designer Salvador Perez.

Welcome to Behind the Insta-Scenes! A new feature offering a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes sneak peeks from future episodes, what’s airing this week and flashing back to the past. It’s a comedy heavy first edition including The Mindy ProjectParks and Recreation, The Daily Show and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Starting with the woman whose Instagram we have been pouring over all summer for a multitude of reasons – amazing outfits both on screen and off, plus so much Chris Messina – and the one we refer to as the gift that keeps on giving; Mindy Kaling.

First up a shot from episode 8 including its title “Diary of a Mad Indian Woman” and that phone call must be important considering what is also going on in the shot and is being ignored.

A super cute outfit including a strawberry print top, Chanel purse and red booties (coveting these so hard).

Parks and Recreation is currently shooting its final season so expect plenty of photos from this set. This one is courtesy of Retta and gives me a much needed April Ludgate costuming fix.

More from the Parks and Rec set and Aziz Ansari gifts us this fun looking super swish moment with Retta – the return of Treat Yo’ Self Day?

Lena Dunham is doing the big Not that Kind of Girl book tour at the moment and this includes stopping by The Daily Show and hanging out with former Girls guest star Jessica Williams.

To celebrate the return of Brooklyn Nine-Nine Chelsea Peretti shared this heart filled shot with co-star Stephanie Beatriz. More booties (and slippers) to add to my wish list.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

11 Apr

It’s that time of month for the newsstands to get an influx of new magazines and this edition of Out of the Box is looking at striking images from New York magazine, Vanity Fair, the annual Beautiful People issue of Paper and the The Normal Heart cast covering The Hollywood Reporter.

Cabaret[Source]

Michelle Williams and Alan Cumming are appearing on stage together in Cabaret and New York magazine is celebrating this collaboration with an amazing photo of the pair in this week’s issue. It’s a departure from how we are used to seeing Cumming as relatively buttoned up Eli Gold on The Good Wife – though Cumming has won a Tony for his previous Cabaret turn – and it’s Williams’ Broadway debut. It’s a super cool photo and there’s extra excitement for me personally as I have tickets for Cabaret this summer, if you’re a regular reader you will know how much I adore the work and styling of Michelle Williams.

Jessica Williams[Source]

The Beautiful People issue of Paper has many TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites so it was hard to pick out just one, in the end Jessica Williams is our choice because she’s rocking the Tanya Taylor stripes and for her always awesome appearances on The Daily Show. Williams also appeared on the most recent season of Girls and along with coveting all her outfits; it was good to see her flexing her acting chops on a show like this.

Kiernan Shipka VF[Source]

Mad Men returns this weekend for part one of the final season and Kiernan Shipka continues to kill it on both the red carpet and in fashion editorials. This Tommy Hilfiger ensemble is classic all American with a color block twist and I adore the hair flick that nods to the decade prior to the one Sally Draper currently lives in. I want all the good things for Shipka and that she can navigate the tricky path which is growing up on camera. So far she is doing a stellar job and I’m also glad to see editorials like this Vanity Fair one choosing age appropriate clothes for her to wear.

THR the normal heart[Source]

The Normal Heart is on the highly anticipated list and this week Jim Parsons, Taylor Kitsch, Matt Bomer and Mark Ruffalo cover The Hollywood Reporter and look unsurprisingly dapper. If you haven’t seen the trailer you can watch it here and be warned the room you are in might suddenly get dusty.

TK

Bonus Taylor Kitsch from the issue and he is wearing the hell out of those Salvatore Ferragamo pants and Dior shirt. For more photos head here.

Music Monday: John Oliver’s Carlos Danger Dance

19 Aug

John Oliver ended his hosting duties on The Daily Show last week and he has shown that he wasn’t just an adequate replacement, but a very good one. When it was announced that Oliver would be filling in for Jon Stewart over the summer I questioned whether they should have rotated the host with each correspondent taking a turn behind the desk. Instead they went with just John Oliver and it turned out to be an excellent move; as this piece by Jesse David Fox concludes “It’s the difference between “proven talent” and “prove it, talent!” The Daily Show has done the perfect job in preparing us for a changeover.”

Carlos Danger, Anthony Weiner’s chosen sexting name has been the gift that keeps on giving for The Daily Show this summer and John Oliver’s Danger Dance accompanied by Mystikal ft. Nivea “Danger (Been So Long)” has been a constant source of joy. So to celebrate John Oliver’s excellent turn as host we will be doing our best Carlos Danger Dance today.
